Chonburi plans events for Queen Savang 150th anniversary

Chonburi officials are preparing for a United Nations-backed celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Queen Savang Vadhana.

Chaiyawet Nutprayun, director of Queen Savang Vadhana Memorial Hospital, presided over the Sept. 11 preparation meeting at the Sriracha facility.

The Culture Ministry and Queen Savang Vadhana Foundation had requested for a royal decree to mark the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization tribute to the Queen as an important individual and her contributions to health science, culture, social science and human sciences.

Queen Savang Vadhana of Siam was born on 10 September 1862 and passed away on 17 December 1955 at the age of 93. She was the grandmother of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great.

At the 36th UNESCO general conference in Paris in October, the meeting had approved to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Queen’s birth during 2012. The ministry has been tapped to organize events.

In Chonburi, the province has invited government officials to an anniversary celebration for the Queen’s namesake hospital, plus an exhibition on history and missions of Queen Savang and an academic seminar.

Chonburi also will produce souvenirs, a photography contest, hospital-related drawing contest, twice-monthly meditation sessions, renovation of the landscape at Queen Savang hospital, alms offerings and merit making.

There also will be a tour following the footsteps of the queen, an eco-tourism project, and opening of a royal museum. (CPRD)
