Teachers from 14 Pattaya-area schools gained training on child-protection
laws and how to detect abuse at a seminar run by the Hand to Hand Foundation
and ECPAT International.
Deputy Mayor Verawat Khakhay opened the March 25 workshop with ECPAT
President Mark Balkaldi, Hand to Hand Vice President Margaret Granger and
Pattaya social worker Arunrasamee Burton appearing as speakers at Pattaya
City Hall.
The event was the fifth of five run since August to teach educators and
social workers on child-protection laws and the Convention of Rights of the
Child. The convention is a “contract between nations” that children from all
countries are entitled to certain rights from birth and that member
countries must act to protect those rights.
At the session, brochures and evaluation forms were distributed to have
teachers manage, screen and analyze individual students for abuse.
Verawat said the training helps Thailand prepare for the 2015 ASEAN Economic
Community. Pattaya already is a member of International Child Protection
Network in Southeast Asia and a committee member and advisor to the Child
Exploitation and Online Protection Centre of the United Kingdom, he said.
