Top male and female bodybuilders from across Thailand competed for cash
prizes and prepared for international competitions at the Thailand
Bodybuilding 2014 tournament held in Pattaya earlier this month.
The April 5-6 Thailand Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Association event at
Royal Garden Plaza saw bodybuilders compete in 12 categories and numerous
weight classes to win acclaim for having the “perfect physique,” promote
Pattaya tourism and prep for the Asian Bodybuilding Championships (Aug. 26)
in Macau and world championships being held Nov. 24-30 in India.
Wilaipoen Wannaklang was the winner of the
women’s crown.
Association President Phakphong Kriangsak opened the
event with Maj. Gen. Jaruk Aariratchakaran, vice president of the Olympic
Committee of Thailand, and Montree Chaiyaphan, deputy governor of the Sports
Authority of Thailand, and other guests attending.
Previous ‘Mr. Thailand’ winner Wuthichai Sangtula from Muscletech Thailand
again won the annual competition, beating out five other athletes in the
“Champ of Champs” contest.
Favorite Wilaipoen Wannaklang of Muscletech also repeated as the female
champion. Chaiwat Thongsaeng from the Thai-Japan Camp also defended his
title as winner of the Male Model Fitness 170cm class.
Other categories included junior and senior bodybuilders, athletic physique,
model physique, and a class for newcomers. The top five finishers in each
group received cash prizes.
Sittinan Khayanthum, a 16-year-old competing in the newcomers’ class, said
diet and rest were keys to his preparation for the competition. The
Chantaburi native said he plans to try again at a future event.
Universal Bodybuilding sent seven athletes to the meet. The camp had enjoyed
success with silver and gold medalists at previous competitions.

with the organizers, sponsors and winners from last year after the press
conference announcing the Pattana Golf Challenge 2014, the first round
of which will be held on Tuesday 29th April.
A press conference was held recently at the Pattana Golf Club & Resort
chaired by vice president Rujirapun Juangroongruangkit to announce the
2014’s Pattana Golf Challenge. This is the fourth year for the competition,
which provides an opportunity for all Thai and foreign amateur golfers
living around the Eastern Seaboard to compete in a prestigious tournament.
There will be a total of four qualifying rounds, held on April 29, June 24,
August 26 and on October 7 and one final round on October 14.
No official handicap is required to enter as the 36 system score
calculations will be used and there are no limitations on the number of
golfers competing in each round. Each golfer can play as many qualifying
rounds as they choose. A rotation of the 3 courses (Andreas, Brookei and
Calypso) will be used in each round making it more fun for repeat
contenders.
Forty golfers from each selection round will be qualified to play in the
final round and selection will be made via 2 methods; firstly the 30 golfers
carrying the best net score from each round will automatically progress to
the finals in October and they will be joined by another 10 golfers from
each round who qualify through the lucky draw.
The best 120 golfers from the 4 selection rounds plus 40 lucky draw entrants
will compete in the final round on Oct. 14. The great prizes on offer
include a 1-year membership at the Pattana Golf Club & Resort, special
prizes from sponsors, and an all expenses paid golf trip to the Spring City

Return to Bangpra
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
Jeff & Jonathan cruising the
fairway.
Tuesday, April 8, Bangpra - Stableford
Tuesday saw us return to Bangpra for the first time since last
year’s low season. The course, the oldest in the area, and at just a little
less than 6500 yards from the white tees, always provides a good test. And
so it proved on this day, with the fairways good, and while the greens were
probably as slow as they have ever been, they still provided a few flutters
when above the hole.
Jeff Wylie (H/cap 7) led the way home with 34 points, ahead of Jonathan
Pratt (11) on 32, while Trev & Sam just missed the top two spots.
Both near pins went to Jeff on the front 9, while Jonathan & Neil split the
back 9 pins.
Thursday, April 10, Pattana - Stableford
Pattana was our venue for Thursday, with the opening tee shot on
B1 being arguably the most intimidating in the area. The B & C nines were
the test of the day and the course was in tip top shape under any
examination. The combination was playing at around 6,600 yards from the
whites, as one of the par 5s is currently undergoing some bridge repairs.
Jeff again showed some fine form to sign for 39 points, again ahead of
Jonathan, who let a spectacular round slip over the last few holes, cough,
cough!
Near pins were spread around between Jeff, Martin & Sam.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam
Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after
50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from
here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting
prompt presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors
(>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for
scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Aihara back on track
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Captain Phil Smedley, staffers
Gigi & Meow with Mike Cantrell.
Steve Ellison
Monday, April 7, Green Valley (white tees) - Stableford
T1st Kenny Aihara (4) 39pts
T1st Muffy Kerr (12) 39pts
T2nd Jimmy Dundon (17) 36pts
T2nd Peter Larsson (14) 36pts
T2nd Tom Breslin (24) 36pts
T2nd Ian Pickles (13) 36pts
By the time you read this, we will all be high and dry up in Khao Yai. The
only benefit to staying in Pattaya is it may possibly be the world’s biggest
wet t-shirt contest, but golf becomes too much of a hassle this week.
Funny things can happen sometimes when you don’t use the countback system,
and at this day’s event there were a whole bunch of golfers jumbled up for
second place. Four guys ended up shooting their handicap, and then we had
another tie for first as Muffy Kerr and Ken Aihara both shot 39’s.
Double
winner
Ken Aihara.
The new hole numbering seems to be going fine and the condition of the
course is holding up very well, as we see many other courses drying up
quickly and establishing a summer hardpan.
Wednesday, April 9, Bangpra (white tees) – Stableford
T1st Kenny Aihara (4) 31pts
T1st Dave Parker (8) 31pts
T1st Scott Witt (11) 31pts
Bangpra was the venue for today’s comp, and it is one of the better golf
courses here. Today it was looking on the dry side and as we all like the
extra roll, it comes at a price. The fairways have now become quite hard, so
many thin shots were typical today.
When you have some very good golfers come back with a mere 31 on the card,
you know it was a rough day at the office. Once again we had a tie, but
great to see our pal Kenny Aihara back on the podium and back on his game.
Way to go Kenny!
Friday, April 11, Eastern Star – Stableford
1st Mike Cantrell (29) 41pts
2nd Phil Smedley (10) 36pts
3rd Brian Green (15) 36pts
The Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed Eastern Star was the track to finish
out our week of amazing golf in Thailand. The course continues to have
maintenance issues and the recent sanding is not helping their cause. Still,
it is great value for money and we all had an enjoyable round.
Mike Cantrell got back in a few weeks ago and has not had much luck on the
podium until today. From out of nowhere, Mike pulled out a 41 on one of the
more difficult golf courses in the area and beat the field by 5 full strokes
for the win. Great job Mike, it’s about time!

Level par is best of the week
IPGC golf from The Haven
Billy Shepley, John Carlin and
Trevor Schirmer.
Monday, April 7, Treasure Hill (yellow
tees) — Stableford
CSS 71
1st John Carlin (16) 36pts
2nd Allen Raaen (7) 32pts
3rd Russell Gilroy (14) 28pts
4th Mike Hill (23) 27pts
A tough week playing three of the hardest courses in the area started out at
the secluded Treasure Hill course where the decision was taken to play from
the forward yellow tees.
The course is one of the less popular ones due no doubt to the difficulties
posed by the width of some of the fairways and the size of the greens
generally. But it is always found to be in fine shape with the fairways
offering good lies from which all levels of golfers can play their shots,
and the greens are invariably consistent in pace.
As usual the day proved to be a testing one for all the contenders, with
john Carling at last coming into form after several months in the doldrums.
His level par round proved to be easily the best of the day with the nearest
challenger some four strokes behind.
That challenger was Allen Raaen who in turn was four ahead of third placed
Russell Gilroy, who is still managing to feature on the podium listings even
after having dropped four shots from his handicap recently.
Mike Hill took the last spot on the prize list just one back in fourth spot.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Wednesday, April 9, Khao Kheow A & B - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Trevor Schirmer (14) 35pts
2nd Yukio Kikuchi (20) 31pts
3rd Danny Greer (25) 31pts
4th Russell Gilroy (14) 31pts
5th Yasuo Suzuki (12) 30pts
6th John Carlin (16) 30pts
If the previous day’s outing seemed difficult another even more trying
competition was set for the A & B courses at the Pete Dye designed Khao
Kheow. The condition of this course of late has been superb, with lush
fairways and receptive greens that play fast and true but the players need
all their concentration to take on and beat the design and layout of what is
arguably the best test in the area.
Underling that situation, the best card of the day was returned by Trevor
Schirmer at one over par, which was by far and away the outstanding round
and allowed him to win by four from a three-way count back for second place.
This was won by Yukio Kikuchi with 16 on the back nine, with Danny Greer in
third on 15 and Russell Gilroy fourth with 14.
Fifth spot also went to a count back which Yasuo Suzuki won with a better 15
to 13, leaving John Carlin sixth.
Once again there were no 2’s in either division.
Before the presentations were made there were welcome backs for Yasuo Suzuki
and Yukio Kikuchi.
Friday, April 11, The Emerald – Stableford
CSS 72
1st Billy Shepley (5) 36pts
2nd Trevor Schirmer (14) 36pts
3rd Dave Howden (14) 35pts
4th Yukio Kikuchi (20) 33pts
5th Martin Harrington (11) 32pts
The final course of the week proved to be the easiest, no doubt owing much
to the condition of the layout, which was excellent, and the length which at
6024 yards is one of the shortest encountered in the area. But the generally
small greens with difficult surrounds always make for an interesting day’s
golf.
The best of the day belonged to Billy Shepley who went out in a gross five
over and then covered the inward nine in level par for a level handicap
score, which allied to his stunning back nine ensured that he took the day’s
top spot ahead of the in-form Trevor Schirmer who returned a solid even
handicap on both nines and therefore had to settle for a well earned second
place.
Dave Howden, playing his final game prior to returning to Blighty for the
English summer, slipped into third place with a steady one over return.
Yukio Kikuchi again found enough of a game out on the course to figure in
the prize-giving, taking fourth place just one ahead of Martin Harrington.
For the third time in the week there were no 2’s in either division giving
promise to a huge settlement at some time in the future.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome back for John Dahlseng and a
farewell for another year to Dave Howden.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

If it’s Monday it must be Larry Ang
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at the Elephant Bar
The week began for the Pattaya Golf Society with a
visit to Greenwood to play a stableford competition on the C and B nines
which were in fine condition with greens, especially on the back nine,
running at a tasty pace.
The large single group set off early and excellent progress was made on
the relatively empty course. An excellent competition followed in which
Alan Flynn, refreshed by a couple of weeks break, recorded 33 points for
third place. In second was Andrew Purdie, on the eve of his departure
for work, with 34 points. The winner was Larry Ang with 36 points. What
is it about Larry’s weekends that inspires him? This is not the first
time he has taken the victory on a Monday and whatever he is taking
would be welcomed by many PGS cobwebbed” golfers!
Olivier Tahon and Andrew Purdie both recorded birdie ‘2’s on B2 to share
the pot and the Elephant Bar’s consolation beer went to Alan Walker.
With two huge PGS supporters leaving after their final round this trip
the Booby Bevy went to Phil Mitchell and John Holmes as a reminder of
what they will miss over the next few months.
Wichai’s winning ways
On Wednesday, 9th April, the Pattaya Golf Society fulfilled a
hastily rearranged fixture at Emerald in the light of information that
the previously pre-booked Eastern Star greens were being cored. On
arriving at Emerald the group found that the “TiT” rule had been
assiduously applied and the Emerald greens were also being cored! The
remainder of the course was being repaired with tracts of fairways under
GUR and other areas very dry and bare.
The single flight still managed to compete in a tight competition with
John Chelo again showing consistency with 35 points for fourth place. In
third Pat Murphy played a level par round with 36 points, while Brian
Talbot, recently returned, recorded 37 points for second place. Wichai
Tananusorn put a fine round together with the best gross of the day, 76
shots, which gave him 39 points for the victory. There were no birdie
‘2’s, unsurprisingly.
The Elephant Bar’s consolation beer went to Dave Lehane and Monday’s
winner Larry Ang enjoyed the Booby Bevy after a “hero-to-zero”
performance which left him with twenty points.
The presentation party later welcomed back old friend Erik Anttonen and
new friends Mike King and Chris Barnes from England to their first
rounds with the PGS and wished them luck and good golf in the future
with the PGS.
Talbot tames Khao Kheow
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Khao Kheow on Friday,
11th April to play a stableford competition on the B and A nines which
were in good order. Under heavy skies the group began the round early
and by the turn the thunderstorm which had roiled around the hills for
an hour took the course in its stride and halted play for short while.
On the restart there was no evidence of breeze and the round ended in
distinct discomfort for many of the golfers.
Suffering least were the top three on the day with Mr Len making a rare
appearance on the podium with 30 points and third place. Ahead was Alan
Flynn, second with 34 points and a clinical round by Brian Talbot saw
his 37 points emerge as the best performance of the day.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Mike King after his
low scoring round in only his second competition with the group. The
bar’s consolation beer was won by Pat Murphy.
Ahead for the group is the annual Songkhran break and when the courses
and streets have dried out the PGS will again set forth from Soi Buakhao
for more good golf days.

Scribe turns back the clock at Pattana
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Friday winner Derek Brook
(right) with one of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, April 8, Bangpra – Stableford
I always know the low season has started when we visit Bangpra.
During high season it is difficult to get the tee times we want here and the
rate does tend to be a little high for our regulars. But come April, off we
go to Bangpra and at a reasonable rate and time.
This course can be a really tough test of golf and in many respects it
always depends on the wind and the speed of the greens. On this day we were
off a little early as the tee was free when we got there and I noted the
wind was strong but not overly so.
The fairways were good if a little firm and then we reached the greens,
which were not as fast as expected and were a little slow if anything. Take
these greens lightly however and they will bite hard, as they did today.
When you have played this course over many years you still expect the greens
to be fast, so when they turn out not to be it’s hard work getting the ball
to the hole. Then on the next putt you hit it too firmly downhill and away
the ball zooms.
Tuesday’s B Flight winners
pose with one of Bert’s helpers.
The round was very enjoyable if a little hot, except for
the fact they closed the rest-stop by the stroke index one hole and it was
inundated with monkeys. They can be a real nuisance and some of us had
planned to top up with water here but had to wait a few more holes.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results which up to the standards of
late were quite low. The winner in the A Flight, 0 to 18, was Walter Baechli
with 34 points on count back over Brian Parish in second. In third was Brian
Gabe with 31 points on count back over Mashi Kaneta.
In the B Flight we had the best score of the day when Jim Ferris won with 37
points. In second was George King with 34 and in third was Dave Cooper with
31.
Near Pins: Bob Britton, Brian Parish, Mashi Kaneta
Friday, April 11, Pattana – Stableford
If you have not been to play here you really have to make the
effort. During the high season it seems difficult, not only to get a tee
time, but to get a reasonable green fee. We saw an opportunity when Pattana
advertised a cheap green fee in the Pattaya Mail for groups of 5, at 800
baht per player. This ran out on April 11 so we cut the vouchers out of the
newspaper and booked for that day.
I think the course staff were a little surprised when our group turned up
with cut outs from the Pattaya Mail, but after discussions they accepted the
rate and we all booked in. Some say good old Dick for the forethought.
So having booked in it was down to the changing rooms. Those who have not
been here would be astonished at the quality of this clubhouse, and to my
mind it is the best of any golf clubhouse in the area. Indeed, you will have
to go a long way to get a better set up. The changing rooms are a pleasure
to use.
Out in the course the test for the day was to be the B & C nines, and for
those who know the course that means a drive on the B1 between two water
hazards, then an approach across another stretch of water to a raised green
with a bunker in front. A tough start indeed!
The good thing about Pattana is that it has grass on all the fairways, so
you feel that you can actually hit the ball off them. Many courses at the
moment are bare and hard, but not Pattana. Mind, it is a tough course and
the greens are part of the challenge. On this day they were hard and fast
and some of the greens are very large so three-putts are not out of the
normal.
With us well underway we noticed the sky start to darken and the wind pick
up and then about B 7 the rain hit and we heard the siren go, so we quickly
found a rest stop where we saw out the worst of the rain. When the siren
went again we were soon underway, but the ground was a bit wet and soggy and
carts were kept to the cart paths. It was still raining and as we approached
the B9 green and it came down harder so once again we had to take cover for
a short period. When it stopped raining we gave it 10 minutes to allow the
green to drain.
On to the back nine and the rain had slowed things down, but the scribe was
going great guns, best round for years, so the cooled atmosphere was a
pleasure. The C nine is difficult and you need to stick at it, but with the
rain slowing the greens down it was a great walk in the park. So, all in all
it was a really fine day out and a pleasure to play despite the rain. Even
more so as the scribe had his best round for years!
The changing rooms as said are superb but then I looked to have a drink
before leaving. You can go upstairs to the restaurant, but it tends to be a
++ place, however it is usually fine dining. On this day I went to the
downstairs café where you can get a quick snack and I had a cold can of
beer, and very welcome it was I can tell you. Then I found Mashi and it was
back to Bert’s
Once back at Bert’s it was time for the results to be announced. With his
best day for years the winner on the day was the scribe, Derek Brook, with
44 points, and it could not have happened to a nicer guy! In second, also
with his best round for years, and five birdies, was Les Cobban, well
played. We then had a count back on 38 points that saw Brian Parish in third
and Mike O’Brien in fourth. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Brian Parish, Mashi Kaneta, Les Cobban, Tom Herrington

Chatt takes winning route at Pattana
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Jenny and Dean Worrell, visiting
golfers from Chiang Mai.
Monday, April 7, Pattana – Stableford
It was a very hot and sultry day on Monday and the A course was closed so we
started off on the B where everyone loves the first drive here.
We had two divisions today with the cut set at 5-15 and 16 plus. The London taxi
boy Mike Chatt recorded the best score of the day, winning division 1 with 36
points. Ron Miller, playing off six, beat Lindsay Phillips 15/12 on the back six
for second spot after they both came in with 35 points each, no one likes to see
that.
Kari Aarnio topped division 2 standings with 34 points, beating Bob Poole 17/15
on the back nine and in third place was Mauri Friman with 30.
Near pins went to Tim Dale, Terry Madsen (2), Ron Miller, Bob Poole and Tony
Stoltsen.
Tim Dale birdied C2 and Ron Miller C6 to split the ‘2’s pot in division 1 and
Bob Poole also birdied C2 for the only ‘2’ in the second division.
Wednesday, April 9, The Emerald – Stableford
The numbers were dwindling as we headed towards Songkran but there
were still two divisions out today with the same cut as Monday. In his last week
before departing back home to Khao Yai, Tim Hake won division 2 with 37 points,
with Bob Poole in second place two points behind.
After taking a few lessons Chris Voller claimed top honours in division 1,
winning with 35 points ahead of Terry Madsen in second who beat Ron Miller21/15
on the back nine after they both came in with 34 points each.
Tim Hake birdied the 13th for the only ‘2’ of the day to scoop the pot in
division 2.
Friday, April 11, Eastern Star – Stableford
We were warned the previous week that the greens here were about to
be cored but it didn’t really seem to affect the scores being returned today.
Bryan Rought with 38 points won division 2, a couple up on Sid Ottaway in second
with 36 while Frank Kelly placed third place with 33.
In division 1 Wilf Latham with 13 points on the front nine and 22 on the back
beat Chris Voller on count back for top spot after they both came in with 35
points apiece. Ron Miller meanwhile took third with 34.
Near pins went to Bill Bertram, Wilf Latham, Chris Voller, Dean Worrell, Frank
Kelly, Sid Ottaway and Howard Stanley (2).
There were no ‘2’s in either division so rollovers to Eastern Star on April 25.
We said Bon Voyage today to Jill and Howard Stanley and also to Ron Miller - see
you back here in the Autumn.

Finley fires forty-four at Burapha
PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar
Wednesday pro-am group (from the left): Ron,
Panawat, Geoff, Peter, Kerry, Mardan, Tim and Steve.
Monday, April 7,
Burapha - Stableford
There was a qualifier being played on the B & D nines at Burapha today,
Monday, whilst the finishing touches for the Singha Open were being added
which started on Thursday. 23 players from the Outback were also there on A
& C, not being quite good enough to play in the qualifier.
As far as today’s results, Bob Finley just goes from strength to strength,
as he put together an amazing round to score 44 points off his handicap of
12 (down from 17 just 16 months ago), so is a single figure golfer fast
approaching Bob? Barnsey also played well for his 41pts followed home by the
improving Martin Kingswood on 40.
In Div B, the honours went to Jimmy Little on 37pts, from Peter Gwizdeck
(36) with Bob Lindborg in third, also with 36pts.
There were two ‘2’s from Tony Aslett (14th) and Bob Finley (17th).
Tony McDonough (right) receives his DeVere trophy
from the day’s sponsor Greg Hirst.
On Wednesday, we had two teams playing in the Pro-Am
comprising of Ron Dickie, Peter Nixon & Geoff Stimpson and Steve Mann, Kerry
Beck & Tim Knight. The pro in the group (Panawat Muenlek) was playing with a
‘work in progress’ set of clubs as he had his own clubs stolen from his car boot
at his club in Bangkok but it didn’t stop him being 4 under for the day. The
other team had the privilege of playing with Mardan Mamat, who has won three
times on the Asian tour and once on the European tour.
Div A (0-16)
1st Bob Finley (12) 44pts
2nd Robert Barnes (12) 41pts
3rd Martin Kingswood (14) 40pts
Div B (17+)
1st Jimmy Little (18) 37pts
2nd Peter Gwizdeck (18) 36pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (22) 36pts
Tuesday, April 8, Laem Chabang - Stableford
Our second visit to Laem Chabang proved very successful albeit that
we struggled to get enough tee times, even though Jack had previously called
them twice to increase our slots. On the day it did present Steve with a little
bit of headache, as the starter didn’t have the same information as the
Pro-shop. However, it all got sorted out eventually and the 26 players enjoyed
their day playing the C & A nines.
It was reported that the C nine was not in as good condition as B last week but
nevertheless, very acceptable but there was quite a lot of criticism about the
course being set up very short.
In the top division, Kev McIntosh led the way with 41pts, five clear of club
member Tony Garnett on 36, with Aussie visitor Martin Burbidge in third with 34.
Div B was won with the outrageous score of 44pts from Suzi Lawton. Second was
Martin Kingswood with 37pts following his third at Burapha on Monday, so he’s on
a roll. Peter Gwizdeck, who was second at Burapha, lost out on c/b to Martin and
ended up third today, also with 37.
There was only one ‘2’ from Ron Dickie.
Div A (0-12)
1st Kevin McIntosh (6) 41pts
2nd Tony Garnett (12) 36pts
3rd Martin Burbidge (7) 34pts
4th Gary Hallawell (12) 32pts
Div B (13+)
1st Suzi Lawton (28) 44pts
2nd Martin Kingswood (14) 37pts
3rd Peter Gwizdeck (18) 37pts
4th Sakorn Pramoolchart (15) 34pts
Wednesday, April 9, Bangpra - Stableford
Following the popularity of Bangpra through the high season, have
decided to remain here on a regular basis during the low season. 17 players teed
off on time in excellent conditions; it was a little slow as usual getting past
the first par-3 but after that the round proceeded as normal.
There was only one division in which Tony McDonough took first place with 35pts,
followed home by General Jack on 34. Svenn Lund (33) was third and Sugar Ray
beat Martin Kingswood on count back, both scoring 30pts.
Bruce McAdam, celebrating his birthday, generously sponsored the near pins with
some food & drink vouchers at the Outback and they were won by Sugar Ray (2nd
hole), Mark Kembrey got two of them (8th and 12th) and the General picked up the
last one on the 17th , where he drained the four foot putt for the only ‘2’.
1st Tony McDonough (16) 35pts
2nd Jack Moseley (21) 34pts
3rd Svenn Ole Lund (12) 33pts
4th Sugar Ray Handford (17) 30pts
5th Martin Kingswood (14) 30pts
Friday, April 11, Green Valley - Medal
33 players set off, amongst considerable controversy, to play in the
April monthly medal using Green Valley’s revised layout for the first time for
the Outback. The medal had been delayed for one week, as last Friday we were at
St. Andrews.
So why controversial? The decision was taken to use the white tee on the left
hand side of the first, which avoids having to cross the water – with some
players this was met by opposition whilst others were thankful. It is not any
easy decision to make and quite why a hole has two sets of white tees remains a
mystery.
As to the golf, the heavy rain had a big say as a number of players (12 to be
precise) failed to return a card. As to the new layout, many couldn’t get used
to the fact that after coming down the old 18th, they still had more holes to
play.
Tony McDonough remained undeterred by all the goings on, recording a gross 83,
which believe it or not won him the low gross medal, for a net 67 – which won
him the DeVere trophy for the month. Waldo was one back on 68, followed home by
Tom Byrne (69) and Bob Lindborg (70).
Greg LeBlanc kindly sponsored four near pins today, which were won by Tom Byrne,
Gerd Riedler, Paul Bourke and Steve Mann.
There were six ‘2’s from Tom Byrne, Kim Danboise & Stephen Mann (5th), Gerd
Riedler (8th) and Tom Byrne & Kerry Rothman (16th).
1st Tony McDonough (16) net 67
2nd Stephen Blazsanyik (18) net 68
3rd Tom Byrne (17) net 69
4th Bob Lindborg (22) net 70
5th Martin Kingswood (14) net 73
6th Sel Wegner (15) net 74
7th Stephen Mann (11) net 74
8th Kim Danboise (20) net 74

Wilkinson has a week to remember
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
No golf on Monday last week as it was another Thai holiday which always
means the price to play golf goes up and the courses tend to get
overcrowded, so the TRGG took the day off.
Roger
Wilkinson - winner
at Green Valley and Greenwood.
It was as you were for the rest of the week and there was no doubt who
deserved to be crowned “Golfer of the Week” when he took first place on two
of the remaining three days golf. Roger Wilkinson was that man and he kept
his golf game together and held his nerve to stay ahead of the rest in some
very tight finishes.
Tuesday, April 8,
Green Valley - Stableford
On Tuesday the TRGG headed over to Green Valley and had a second
chance to play the new layout. Starting on the hardest hole on the course
can be a little daunting for some but there were some very old hands in the
field and they have seen it all before and to them it is not a problem.
Amazingly the three leaders all finished on 37 pts and it was the old sea
dog Roger Wilkinson who finished in the crowsnest. Ted Senior took time off
looking after Ted Junior (his daughter Jenny) and snatched second place
whilst Rod Ewan has still had no ill effects from a severe lashing from the
Handicap committee and finished in third.
1st Roger Wilkinson (14) 37pts
2nd Ted Senior (15) 37pts
3rd Rod Ewan (11) 37pts
Thursday, April 10,
Greenwood - Stableford
Thursday it was off to Greenwood (C and B courses) and Roger
Wilkinson did it again. This time he didn’t need the help of a count back
and finished in the lead by one whole point from fellow Aussie Derek
Thorogood. Rod Ewan again took third place still playing some very
consistent golf.
1st Roger Wilkinson (14) 38pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (16) 37pts
3rd Rod Ewan (11) 35pts
Saturday, April 12,
Eastern Star - Stableford
On Saturday Eastern Star was the venue and Fergus Brennan took
over the number one slot for the second time in consecutive weeks and shook
off his days in the doldrums. It did however take another count back to
decide the winner and Fergus just defeated Gerry Fernandez. Rod Ewan again
took third place for the third time this week.
1st Fergus Brennan (12) 39pts
2nd Gerry Fernandez (13) 39pts
3rd Rod Ewan (11) 36pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to
play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056
7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the
weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Slender shines at Crystal Bay
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Lindsay Slender, Niall Stuart &
Leif Kirkgaard.
Peter Blackburn
Tuesday, April 8, Bangpra – Stableford
It had been quite some time since we had played Bangpra,
one of Pattaya’s oldest courses and we were all looking forward to reacquainting
ourselves with it and as Monday was a Thai Public Holiday we opted for a game on
the Tuesday.
We had 27 golfers signed up for the day and after a good run up number 7 we
arrived at the course 41 minutes later where it was quite busy but that gave us
plenty of time to prepare & have a practice putt. We managed to send our first
group, a three-ball away 30 minutes early at 10.30 am and it was hot and humid
with just a bit of wind. The course was in great shape although the greens
seemed to be just a “tad” slower than usual for this course but still posed
problems for those faced with downhill putts of any size.
It was quite slow going as there were holdups on most of the par threes and
after taking a couple of drinks breaks we managed to complete the round in the
fairly slow time of four hours & forty minutes. It was great to play the course
again after a long break and with the excellent company it was a very enjoyable
day.
Martin Todd returned to good form and won the Division A with a fine score of 39
points and with 2 golfers on 36 points the resultant count back saw Alain
“Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (18 point back nine & 13 points on the last 6 holes)
take second spot from Mike Allidi (18 point back nine & 11 points on the last 6
holes) in third place. Big Bill Steinman finished fourth with a steady 35
points.
Martin Todd, John Waugh & Arne Max
Pedersen.
Things were tight at the top of Division B
with 2 players on 38 points so another count back was required which saw Arne
Max Pedersen (19 point back nine) take first place from Lotte Boskov (16 point
back nine) in second spot. Thientong Charoenrung came third with 34 points, one
point ahead of Jan Lovgreen in fourth place.
Division A (0-16)
1st Martin Todd (9) 39pts
2nd Alain Taddei (16) 36pts
3rd Mike Allidi (3) 36pts
4th Bill Steinman (10) 35pts
Division B (17+)
1st Arne Max Pedersen (17) 38pts
2nd Lotte Boskov (18) 38pts
3rd Thientong Charoenrung (18) 34pts
4th Jan Lovgreen (18) 33pts
Near Pins: 2nd – Jan Lovgreen, 8th – Thientong Charoenrung, 12th – Sal Brizzi,
17th – Leif Kirkgaard
Long Putts: 9th – Dave Neal, 18th - Bill Steinman
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on
the day) was won by first timer John Waugh and he accepted the award like the
good sport that he is.
Thursday, April 10, Crystal Bay A & B – Stableford
This was our last game before the week’s break for
Songkran and we had 23 golfers on the start sheet ready to tackle one of our
favourites, Crystal Bay. As we were all on time our 2 mini vans were able to
depart 5 minutes ahead of schedule at 8.25 am and after a fairly quick journey
we arrived at the course 42 minutes later. The golf course was not at all busy
and we were allocated the B & A nines in that sequence so after a quick check in
and leisurely preparation we managed to send our first group, a three-ball away
10 minutes early at 9.50 am.
Once more it was hot and humid with very little wind to cool us down and with no
other groups immediately in front of us we proceeded at a good pace. The course
was in very good condition with lush fairways & well maintained greens and we
managed to complete our round in the good time of three hours & fifty minutes.
With 2 golfers on 38 points a count back was necessary to decide the winner in
Division A and it was Leif Kirkgaard (22 point back nine) who was victorious
with your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (20 point back nine) in second spot
and Tom McMahon was third with 36 points.
In Division B there was a “bolter” as Lindsay Slender scored 41 points to win
from Jack Robertson in second place with36 points. Another count back was
required to determine third spot as there were two on 34 points and it was Roy
“Plums” Dayton (21 point back nine) who prevailed over the luckless Graham
“Grunter” Buckingham (16 point back nine).
Division A (0-18)
1st Leif Kirkgaard (17) 38pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (12) 38pts
3rd Tom McMahon (16) 36pts
Division B (19+)
1st Lindsay Slender (25) 41pts
2nd Jack Robertson (25) 36pts
3rd Roy Dayton (25) 34pts
Near Pins: A5 – Duangjai Tusagad, A8 – John Davis, B4 – Peter Blackburn, B6 –
Bob Akapita
Long Putts: A9 – Tom McMahon, B9 – Duangjai Tusagad
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by the returning Niall Stuart and Deefa the

Greig takes KPK Medal at Emerald
PSC golf from the Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Buff (right) presents the KPK
voucher to Friday’s winner, Colin Greig.
Wednesday, April 9, Bangpakong –
Stableford
Only 12 players on Wednesday as the pre-Songkran exodus from Pattaya began
to take effect, but those that played had another great day around what is
surely one of the best courses in the area. Some members complain that the
course is too long off the white tees (6,700 yards), but the course is more
forgiving than most of our other regular venues and is always in great
condition, so the scores here are usually good.
No one had a massive score today, but most players scored 30 points or more,
and the eventual winner was John Graham, one point ahead of Gordon Melia,
with Paul Smith coming in third place.
My own personal criticism of this course is the hole handicapping system,
where the par three’s are handicapped 15 through to 18 and yet are some of
the most difficult we play. However, today your scribe had a good day,
taking the only two near pin prizes that were claimed on the day and scooped
the pot.
1st John Graham (10) 37pts
2nd Gordon Melia (17) 36pts
3rd Paul Smith (2) 34pts
Near Pins: Geoff Parker.
Friday, April 11,
The Emerald – Medal
A good turnout today for our visit to the usually
popular Ban Chang course, but when we arrived at the clubhouse we were
disappointed to see a notice informing us that all the greens had been cored
and sanded. This was our first medal competition of the month, once again
sponsored by KPK Foods, so clearly the condition of the greens was going to
have a major influence on the outcome.
It seemed that as the round progressed there was more and more sand on the
greens, so much so that on the back nine, the groups ahead of us were
leaving messages written in the sand!
Unfortunately, the greens were not the only problem, as once again large
areas of the fairways had been designated as GUR (only a few months after
recovering from the last set of major works), and it must be said that the
course currently offers poor value for money in comparison to others in the
area. Several people commented that if the management made some (financial?)
gesture to regular players when the course is in poor condition, it would
make everyone feel better, but in the absence of that, it’s unlikely that
we’ll be returning in the near future.
The players in the A Flight coped with the difficult conditions better, and
Colin Greig’s score of net 69 was a fine achievement on the day. Paul Smith
took second place on a count back ahead of Geoff Parker, and the only other
player to play better than his handicap was Peter Habgood, who took the
honours in the B Flight.
A Flight
1st Colin Greig (6) net 69
2nd Paul Smith (2) net 71
3rd Geoff Parker (15) net 71
B Flight
1st Peter Hapgood (22) net 70
2nd Colin Hammond (28) net 75
3rd Ken Young (28) net 75
Near Pins: Colin Greig (2) and Paul Smith (2).
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663
for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our

It’s a Viking invasion
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday’s A Flight winner Kevin McKentee
(right) with Colin Davis
Sunday 6th April Green Valley
A Flight
1st Kevin McEntee (8) 35pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (13) 35pts
3rd Nick Odnoral (15) 34pts
B Flight
1st Ulrik Sinding (29) 39pts
2nd Pierre Bietry (17) 39pts
3rd Tom Byrne (17) 39pts
Near Pins: JJ Harney (2), Pierre Bietry
Once again Green Valley has been redesigned, this time it appears by an
unknown rice farmer from Udon Thani. There is now a huge advantage in
local knowledge backed up with a top line GRS range finder (see
Broadmore Bob) and an innate sense of direction. You could also add that
you need a streak of luck to be able to find the holes and not be
disqualified for playing the course in the wrong order or even the wrong
direction.
Freddy
Starbeck.
Overcoming all the obstacles and with the benefit of the designer’s
granddaughter as his caddy (I read this in the Haven’s golf reports the
last time they altered the course and think this says it all perfectly),
Ulrik Sinding had one of his best games for a while to win a three-way
count back in B Flight over Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry and Co. Laois
man Tom Byrne.
In A Flight Kevin ‘you know who’ took the top spot with a count back
victory over Freddy ‘the quite one’ Starbeck, both with 35 points.
Continuing with the count back theme, Aussie Nick Odnoral edged Jeff
Acheson of the podium steps, both a shot in arrears.
Nick Odnoral, Jeff Acheson, JJ Harney, Claude Harder, Ulrik Sinding and
Pierre Bietry shared the 2’s pot.
We at Lewiinski’s were very saddened to hear of the recent passing away
of golf teaching pro Richard Livingston, he will be missed very much by
us all. RIP my friend.
Tuesday, April 8, Burapha A & C - Stableford
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (13) 43pts
2nd Peter Larsen (14) 42pts
3rd Ian Pickles (13) 40pts
B Flight
1st Christian Boysen (20) 42pts
2nd Alistair Gall (21) 40pts
3rd Derek Britton (30) 38pts
Today it was A Danish invasion as Freddy ‘the Viking’ Starbeck, whose
accomplishments have been lauded in this column numerous times, made
another marked move on his handicap with a scintillating 43 points to
win A Flight and take the man of the match honours. His effort
overshadowed the fine showings of Peter Larsen (42pts) and Ian Pickles
(40).
In B Flight, Christian Boysen completed a Danish double gold as he was
top man with an excellent 42 points. Christian was two clear of Alistair
Gall and a further two from Derek Briton.
Ian Pickles, Kevin McEntee and Aiden Murray shared the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, April 9, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Young (14) 36pts
2nd Ian Pickles (13) 36pts
3rd Kevin McEntee (6) 32pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (18) 40pts
2nd Jack Robertson (25) 38pts
3rd Lou Szigligeti (19) 36pts
A fair sized crowd set out for a mid-week stint at the always popular
Green Valley and once again it was played in hot and very humid
conditions. None of that seemed to deter Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby as he
stormed past B Flight, and the entire field for that matter, with a
fantastic 40 points.
Eddy was two clear of Jack Robertson as Aussie outbacker Lou Zig- zag
closed the flight with a steady even par return.
Count backs dominated A Flight with Paul Young going head to head with
the man on form Ian Pickles, both with even par returns but the scales
of justice tipped in Paul’s favour. Kevin ‘you know who’ showed no
chivalry and did the unspeakable by banishing the elegant Yui off the
podium steps as both were four shots in arrears, but Yui did have the
benefit of a 2.
Eric Gobert a brace and Freddy Starbeck shared the pot with Yui.
Friday, April 11, Silky Oak - Stableford
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (13) 34pts
2nd Kevin Betts (17) 32pts
B Flight
1st Jim Bell (20) 37pts
2nd Christian Boysen (20) 33pts
The big story of the day and the week was the exploits of the Danish
boys as they just about empted the Lewiinski’s coffers. Club Champion
Freddy Starbeck, one of the Danes in question, led the way in A Flight
today on 34 points for his third flight win of the week. Kevin Betts
lifted the flight silver two shots back.
Freddy was not the man of the match however as that honour went to B
Flight’s Jimmy ‘AK-47’ Bell who was the only player to solve the Silky
Oak plot with 37 points. Freddy’s Danish mate Christian Boysen closed
the flight with his second pay window visit of the week. Add to that the
mid week flight placing of Ulrik Sinding and it made it a very
profitable week for the Danish gang.
Freddy Starbeck a brace, Brian Dunbar, Jeff Acheson and Lou Szigligeti
shared the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd
Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in
and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport

Wegner & Newell the shining lights at Khao Yai
PSC golf from the Billabong Golf Bar
Barney, Roachy Capt Bob and
Rosco on the tee at Panorama.
Sunday, April 6, Khao Yai C.C. -
Stableford
It was a good road to Khao Yai for the 32 golfers that went to
play; a nice leisurely drive to Pak Chong then on to the Khao Yai Country
Club, a Jack Nicklaus design and a beauty to boot.
The scores on Sunday were as usual in the higher end but that’s because this
course is so open with wide fairways and big greens. It was also in
magnificent condition with good lies on all fairways and in most of the
rough.
Bob
Newell.
This was a three day event plus a singles competition each day, and there
were nearest the pins kindly donated by Mal Farquharson on behalf of his new
and only baby Zac, and the recipients of those on day one were Saeng Ryves,
Greig Ritchie, Craig Wheeler and Sel Wegner.
There were also six ‘2’s recorded by John Player, Saeng Ryves, J.P. Maffray,
Peter Henderson, Paul Greenaway and Bob Newell.
The comp was split into two divisions 0 to 14 and 15 plus and in the second
flight, fourth place went to Wayne Cotterell with 41 points, being beaten on
a count back by John Player also on 41. Second spot went to Rosco Langoulant
with 42 points and in first was Kevin Wild with a great 43 point score. Back
at the hotel Greig Ritchie was heard to comment he didn’t get a mention and
he had forty points. That’s the way it goes mate!
In the top division the scores were almost as good, with J.P. Maffray on 38
points taking fourth, third place going to Saeng Ryves with 39 and second to
Bob Newell on 40, who was edged out of the top position by Capt Bob on a
count back decision.
Monday, April 7, Voyage Panorama - Stableford
Monday we played at Voyage Panorama, a different course than Khao
Yai for sure with some very long carries over ravines and water. It was a
bit hard on some of our older members, however there were no complaints and
once again the course was in great condition, if you were on the fairway
that is. If you strayed into the rough it was a different story but the
greens were fantastically fast and true if you got the line correct.
Peter, Greig, Craig and Mal
enjoy some refreshments back at the hotel.
The novelty prizes today were donated by Bob St. Aubin;
the longest putt on the second hole never got a name on it but the second
shot to the short par four sixteenth went to Jim Bell, so Bob gave him both
prizes.
There were no outstanding scores today with Jim Bell getting fourth place
with 31 points in division two and coming in third was Brian Maddox with 33.
Second spot went to Greig Ritchie with 34 points and coming in at the top
was Sel Wegner with 37.
Division one was pretty much the same, with Paul Greenaway taking fourth on
32 points, third going to Paul Bourke with 33, second to Paul Hack on 34
points and first place to Bob Newell with 38 points.
There was only one ‘2’ and that was recorded by Paul Bourke.
Tuesday, April 8, Rancho Charnvee – Stableford
It was seeded draw today at Rancho Charnvee Country Club. This
course is a must play for any golfer going up to Khao Yai and it is second
to none in every respect. Greens, fairways, bunkers the rough are all just
magnificent, the club house is palatial, and the price is cheaper than the
others we played by quite some margin.
Friday’s
top two, Bob Philp and Craig Wheeler.
When we got to the first tee today the starter said we could set off from
both the first and tenth tees and we were all finished and showered by one
o’clock and ready for the drive back home.
Coming in fourth in the second division was Peter Henderson with 33 points,
Sel Wegner took third on 35, Jim Bell second with 37 points and in top spot
today on count back over Jim was Barry Copestake with a similar 37-pointer.
There was a three-way count back for the minor places in division 1, all on
38 points, with Lloyd Shuttleworth getting fourth, Paul Bourke third, and
Bobby Driggs second. First place meanwhile went to John Ryves with a great
round of 41 points.
There were three ‘2’s coming from Paul Hack, Paul Bourke and Bob Newell. The
near pins, once again donated by Zac, went to Craig Wheeler, Bob Philp,
Saeng Ryves and Paul Bourke.
Taking third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the overall standings, all with 105
points, were Gary Ritchie, Jim Bell, Rosco Langoulant and Kevin Wild
respectively. Claiming the bragging rights for this trip however were Sell
Wegner and Bob Newell, both 109 points each.
Wednesday, April 9, Green Valley - Stableford
We got away to an early start today as there were no other people
on the course and we were around in 3 hours 40 minutes. The course was in
great condition with the greens fast as usual.
The scores left a little bit to be desired so it was up to the girls to show
the way home today with two ladies in the winner’s circle.
In a three-way count back on 31 points, Jack Butler placed fifth, Lloyd
Shuttleworth fourth and Eng Cotterell third respectively. 34 points secured
second place for Peter LeNoury and coming in first was Nichawan Khiaophuang
(Sa) with 36.
There were no ‘2’s recorded so everything went out in prizes.
Friday, April 11,
Khao Kheow - Stableford
Just a small field today playing at Khao Kheow and we got off to
an early start, which was just as well as a storm hit the course as were
leaving the last hole. The course was in great condition but the greens were
a little slow.
The scoring went down to third place which was taken by Lloyd Shuttleworth
with an even par round of 36 points. Coming second was Capt Bob with 37
points and first by a country mile was Craig Wheeler with a magnificent 43
points.
There were no ‘2’s scored even though the Capt had a four-footer and still
missed from that distance.
Note: The Billabong Golf Bar is situated just off Siam Country Club
Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411
if you are looking for a game.

Funeral Notice
As we sadly reported last week, long time Pattaya
friend, PGA Pro Richard Livingston passed away on the morning of
April 6. His funeral has now been scheduled for Tuesday, April 22,
2014 from 3-3.30pm (15,00-15.30) at Wat Chaiyamongkol on South
Pattaya Road near the Second Road intersection.
For those who didn’t know, he had been in the hospital in Trat for
the past nine months in a coma after taking a fall in his apartment.
He never recovered from the coma.
