Pattaya officials order cleanup of smelly Sukhumvit Soi 3 dump

Much of the garbage has since been cleaned up after being brought to the attention of city hall - at least for now.

Jetsada Homklin
Pattaya officials have ordered an immediate cleanup of a garbage-transfer station that is stinking up the Sukhumvit Soi 3 neighborhood.
Amnuai Somphongtham, head of Pattaya City Council’s Peace and Environment Maintenance Committee, and Deputy Mayor Wutisak Rermkitkarn on April 29 inspected the temporary-storage facility that has generated lots of complaints from neighbors about foul odors.
The officials found 1,200 tons of garbage waiting for transport to the city’s new dump in Laem Chabang. Amnuai said the Clean Pattaya City Joint Venture Co. reported that rain and bad weather had prevented it from moving the waste recently.
The councilman ordered staffers to immediately solve the problem and spay odor-killing disinfectant hourly and after every trash deposit.
At the meeting, the councilman reported that steps also are being taken to address the growing garbage problem on Koh Larn, which is behind Pattaya’s year-long waste-disposal problems.
The island currently generates about 20 tons of trash a day. Residents and businesses will be encouraged to separate trash for recycling, with food products to be disposed of through biological measures.
The remaining trash will continue to be shipped back to the mainland, but the island may soon have relief for its wastewater problem.
The councilman said a proposal is on the table to build a water-treatment plant that will treat water from every structure on Koh Larn.
