Navy teams go head to head
at Beach Volleyball Pattaya Open
Pattaya Deputy Mayor Wattana
Chantanawaranon (2nd left) presents the male winners’ trophy to the
victorious Navy 1 team.
Jetsada Homklin
Jomtien beach proved to be a magnet for sports lovers on Sunday,
August 3 as the area’s multipurpose sports arena played host to the finals
of the Beach Volleyball Pattaya Open 2014.
The tournament, which ran in total for 4 days from July 31 – August 3, was
organized by the Pattaya Tourism Department in co-operation with the
Thailand Volleyball Association and attracted 16 nationwide teams, which
were split evenly between the male division and the female U-17 contenders.
After some keenly fought qualifying rounds, the final two matches saw the
Thai Navy 1 and 2 teams face off against each other in the men’s final and
Kalasin 1 take on Bangkok Sport School in the ladies championship game.
In the men’s final, Navy 1 got off to a blistering start and secured the
first set 21-13 in short order. Any thoughts they may have had of an easy
victory were soon blown out of the water however as Navy 2 tightened up
their defence and came back strongly to take the second set 21-17 and tie
the match up at 1 set all.
Thus, the final had to be settled by a tie-break, which was a straight race
to 15 and Thai Navy 1 got their game back just in time as their opponents
began to tire and mistakes crept into their play. Thai Navy 1 took the
tiebreaker 15-12 and captured the winners’ trophy and 20,000 baht in prize
money. Thai Navy 2 had to be content with the 10,000 baht consolation prize
and also playing their part in a thrilling final that kept the spectators
entertained throughout.
The concluding match of the event was the ladies final that saw Kalasin 1
race out to an early one set lead against the Bangkok Sports School, the
Isaan duo proving too slick for their opponents as they rattled off the set
21-11. The final then took a similar pattern to the men’s event as Bangkok
grew into the match and started to find some rhythm to their play. As the
Kalasin team started to misfire on serve, Bangkok took advantage to take the
second set 21-16.
With momentum now clearly on their side, the Bangkok pairing then played
their best volleyball of the match in the deciding tiebreaker and wrapped up
the contest and the championship 15-8 to take the 10,000 baht first prize.
In the men’s third place playoff match preceding the finals, Lukpradu 2 were
victorious in straight sets (21-11, 21-17) over Chantaburi and took home a
prize of 6,000 baht while Samutsakorn College finished third overall in the
ladies division.
Pattaya Deputy Mayor Wattana Chantanawaranon along with other city
administrators and national volleyball officials were on hand to present
prize money and trophies to all the winning teams and finalists.
Thai sports officials are hopeful that this tournament can prove to be a
springboard for success for the nation’s best beach volleyball players at
the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China later this month, the Asian Games
in Incheon, South Korea in September and also later this year at the Asian
Beach Games in Phuket.

United turn on the style with 4-0 win at Sriracha

Division 1 fixture at the IPE Chonburi Stadium, Sunday, August 3.

Pattaya United moved further away from the threat of Division 1 relegation
with a 4-0 rout of neighbours Sriracha Ban Bueng FC last Sunday, August 3 at
the IPE Chonburi Stadium.
United struggled to make a breakthrough in the opening exchanges but
Sriracha’s leaky defence offered the promise of goals aplenty provided the
Dolphins’ forwards could exercise patience. The opening goal duly arrived in
the 40th minute when Pattaya’s Cristiano Lopes latched onto a left wing
cross from Huangprakone to powerfully head the ball home for the only goal
of the half.
United came out with more purpose after the break and doubled their lead on
the hour mark as Brazilian midfielder Leo cleverly evaded 2 defenders on the
edge of the Sriracha area before calmly stroking the ball past the advancing
keeper and in off the far post.
The Dolphins didn’t have to wait too long to add a third and effectively
wrap up all three points. In the 64th minute, Patipat Armatantri ran onto a
reverse pass from Narakorn to hammer the ball into the Sriracha net and just
10 minutes later the same two players combined again, but this time it was
Narakorn who provided the finished touch to seal a comprehensive win for the
visitors.
Pattaya United are now sitting in a more secure mid-table position on 33
points while Sriracha Ban Bueng remain rooted to the foot of the standings
with relegation all but a certainty.
Pattaya’s next fixture is on Sunday, August 10, at home to Bangkok FC.
Kick-off at the Nongprue Stadium is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Pattaya Arunothai squads top
youth football tournament
Youth players pose with their
trophies in front of Pattaya Deputy Mayor Wattana Chantanawaranon (standing
center) and other Pattaya City officials at the conclusion of the 2-week
football tournament.
Jetsada Homklin
Pattaya Arunothai School took top honors at the two-week Anti-Drugs
Youth Football Tournament, with teams placed first and third in the
competition’s two divisions.
Playing out at the Pattaya Youth Sports Center through July 15-30, the
tournament featured teams from Pattaya schools No. 1-10, Aksornthepsit,
Aksorn Pattaya, Wat Suthawas and Pattaya Arunothai schools.
Like the recent FIFA World Cup, the tournament began with a group round in
which four teams played each other once, with the top two teams advancing to
the knockout round, in which tied games were decided by penalty kicks.
The competition was divided into two divisions: boys aged 14 and under, and
boys aged 15-16.
Pattaya Arunothai took first place in the older-boys group, with Wat
Suthawas placing second and Pattaya School No. 7 taking third.
In the younger-boys category, Pattaya School No. 8 won first prize, School
No. 5 came second and Pattaya Arunothai third.
Deputy Mayor Wattana Chantanawaranon and city council members presented all
the winning sides with cups and awards July 31.

Rayer takes monthly medal on debut
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Phil, Ishi and Thierry back at
TGC.
Steve Ellison
Monday, July 28, Green Valley (white tees) –
Monthly Medal
1st John Rayer (17) net 68
2nd Mark Wood (8) net 70
T3rd Brian Wilkinson (16) net 71
T3rd Rich Moore (17) net 71
T4th Kris Kritsanajoothra (8) net 72
T4th Geoff Doody (20) net 72
Today we arrived to a full sign-up sheet of 28 golfers for our Monthly
Medal. That is a great turn out for low season, so thanks to all of you for
your support of TGC both on and off the course.
It was a cool and overcast day as we headed up the ol’ 36 with our new
Kenwood music and video system upgrade installed in the van. This is great
for our longer trips as we put up movies to pass the time on the road and
keep a bit of sanity on the tour.
Weather was overcast and cool, but later on we had a bit of rain and the
latter groups finished slightly damp.
Dave Ferris congratulates
Jensin Lim on her 39.
We welcome back Kris K and partner Jensin Lim back to the fold to help keep
the boys in line, and Rich Moore back in from Bangkok for a quick break from
his teaching activities. Jeez, even Brian Wilkinson made it back to town!
You just never know who is going to show up these days.
There were lots of familiar names and faces on the Monthly Medal podium
today. Darksider Geoff Doody was right up there with the aforementioned Kris
K. who for once trailed Wilko and Rich Moore. Steady and sure Mark Wood has
family in town which usually means distractions, but he held it together for
2nd place honours. The day went to newcomer John Rayer, who is now the proud
owner of his first-star Monthly Medal Antigua shirt for July 2014!
Wednesday, July 30, Burapha A & B (white tees) –
Stableford
T1st Masao Ishikawa (16) 37pts
T1st Thierry Danzas (22) 37pts
3rd Pek Svensson (16) 36pts
It has been far, far too long since we played this fine golf course, but it
was worth the wait. This is one of the best golf courses in the area, and we
have a choice of 23 great courses to choose from here. Burapha is home to
many Asian Tour events so is always in top condition and with a cooling bank
of clouds over our heads a perfect day for golf was in store.
4 tee times were required for today’s competition and our buddies from
France and Japan stole the show. Masao Ishikawa - we just call him Ishi -
had a great day of golf to come home with 37 points to tie with Thierry
Danzas for first place honours. Thierry came in second at Laem Chabang a few
weeks back so good to see him improve and work his way up those podium
steps. By the way, thanks go to Thierry for his donation to our “Smiling
Caddy” charity which you will be hearing more about soon. Well played guys!
Friday, August 1, Laem Chabang A & B (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Jensin Lim (32) 39pts
2nd Henry O’Brien (18) 39pts
3rd David Ferris (25) 37pts
The first day of golf in August brought us back to Laem Chabang, by popular
demand. We booked 6 tee times here and filled the card easily, that is how
popular this Nicklaus course is. We are getting here (and Burapha) in under
30 minutes from TGC, which rivals Siam in drive time. Today we played the A
and B courses which tend to be easier than the C side, at least for the
mid-handicappers anyway.
Our buddy from the high desert of Arizona, Dave Ferris, has been hitting the
driving range lately and taking lessons up at the TPR Golf Academy with
great results. He shot one better than his handicap on today’s card so
Tyrone is doing some good work up there if he can even get Dave on track!
Local rascal and ladies man Henry O’Brien was once again hard to beat, even
off his new 18 handicap (finally out of the 20’s) and shared the winnings
with his 39 points.
Sorry Henry, the star of the show today was the little lady of the links,
Jensin Lim from Singapore who had her best round in memory to tie on 39
Stableford points, a great number to shoot at Laem Chabang. You go girl!
Thanks again to all who joined in with us for the fun of golf in Pattaya,
the home of golf in Thailand!

Yui blows away the field
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, July 27, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Yui Bietry (11) 42pts
2nd Yves Moultier (14) 39pts
3rd Tom Byrne (15) 38pts
B Flight
1st Bill Peach (16) 39pts
2nd Christian Boysen (18) 39pts
3rd Phil Davies (20) 37pts
Near Pins: No 5 Collin Sansom, No 8 Merle Humphreys, No 12 Yui Bietry, N0 16
Christian Boysen
Sunday’s
winner
Yui Bietry.
The old scribe, hard over-traditionalist that he is, seldom relinquishes the
title slot to the girls of the society but a performance such as the 42
points from Yui Bietry that took the top spot in A Flight last Sunday, and
also included a near pin and a ‘2’, can’t be overlooked.
Yui was three clear of Yves Moultier who extended his podium streak to eight
consecutive games with an excellent 39 points. Co. Lois’ favourite son Tom
Byrne closed the flight with a steady 38 points.
Bill Peach, never a slouch off his 16 handicap but always willing to learn,
took the top step of the podium in B Flight with a count back victory over
the unlucky Christian Boysen. Phil Davies, another in form player, rounded
out the flight with 37 points.
Along with Yui, Colin Sansom, Bill Peach, Christian Boysen, Thierry Temime,
Colin Davis and Merle Humphreys shared the ‘2’s pot.
Tuesday, July 29, Greenwood C & A – Stableford
A Flight
1st Yves Moultier (14) 42pts
2nd Paul Hird (14) 41pts
3rd Tom Gory (14) 39pts
B Flight
1st Peter Terry (21) 39pts
2nd Martin Allard (23) 38pts
3rd Bruce Walters (28) 37pts
I am not going to even mention it this time but the ‘clean-up guy’ struck
again. Yves’ 42 point outburst was good for the man of the match and top
spot on the podium in A Flight. Paul Hird followed Yves closely up the
podium steps with an excellent 41 points while Irishman Tom Gorey tided up
the flight with a very creditably 39 points.
Top man in B Flight was Peter Terry with 39 points and Peter was one clear
of Martin Allard in second. Aussie Bruce ‘walk about Walters and Mike ‘the
Welsh wizard’ Jefferys both bettered their handicap by one stroke, with the
former prevailing on the dreaded count back for third.
Kevin Rogers, Martin Allard and Aiden Murray shared the 2’s pot.
Not surprisingly Yves Moultier looks set to win the golfer of the month
award over Phil Davies.
Wednesday, July 30, Burapha A & B – Stableford
A Flight
1st Yves Moultier (14) 40pts
2nd Alistair Gall (19) 39pts
3rd Colin Davis (16) 39pts
B Flight
1st Barbara Cooper (20) 40pts
2nd John Ianson (20) 40pts
3rd Aiden Murray (23) 39pts
It was the amazing exploits of Yves Moultier, Merle Humphreys and Peter
Terry vying for the man of the match honours, all posting excellent 42 point
returns. The carpet from Yves seat to the pay window is now starting to
become threadbare.
Yves was one clear of the tandem of Alistair Gall and Colin ‘the Donkey’
Davis but alas for the Donkey his acumen on the course did not transfer to
his scorecard as Alistair had the better of the count back.
In B Flight, Merle Humphreys much like his A Flight mates edged the unlucky
Peter Terry for the top podium spot. Martin Allard was left to tidy up the
flight.
Freddy Starbeck, John Pierrel and Barbra Cooper shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, August 1, Crystal Bat C & A - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ed Wyckoff (11) 41pts
2nd German Odermatt (12) 39pts
3rd Paul Bray (16) 39pts
B Flight
1st Mike Jeffreys (20) 39pts
2nd Brad Robins (19) 35pts
3rd Peter Walker (16) 33pts
C Flight
1st Phil Davies (20) 40pts
2nd Mick Coughlan (23) 37pts
3rd Merle Humphreys (20) 36pts
A Flight’s Ed ‘the senator’ Wyckoff was man of the match with an exemplary
42 points of what was formerly known as Natural Park Resort and before that
Panya Park Resort. Second and third spots were separated by a count back,
with German Odermatt edging Paul ‘the man from down under’ Bray, both with
excellent 40 point returns.
Mike ‘the Welsh Dragon’ Jefferys was the main benefactor in B Flight with
his excellent 39 points and was four points clear of Brad Robins. At last
the lads found a way of keeping Yves Moultier off the podium steps, mind you
it took a count back as he and the Donkey came out second best to Peter
Walker. But congratulations to Yves for his amazing run of podium visits.
C Flight was the domain of Phil Davies who the paymaster knows by his first
name with a splendid 40 points. Old friend Mick Coghlan lifted the silver
with very useful 37 points and Merle Humphreys closed the flight and the
week with an even par round.
Ed Wyckoff, German Odermatt, Paul Bray, Connie Walsh, Mike Jefferys and Brad
Robins shared the ‘2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd
Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is

(Left to right): Jeff Cargill,
Mikael Andersson and Steve Jones.
Monday, July 28, Pattaya C.C. –
Stableford
A cut of 9-17 and 19+ in the two divisions today and playing off
a handicap of 24, Willy Van Heetvelde won division 2 with 43 points ahead of
Sid Ottaway in second on 36 while Alan Bissell beat Jimmy Johnson and Burnie
Sinclair for third on a 18/16/15 back-nine count back after they all came in
with 31 points.
In the first division, Wilf Latham won with 36 points, beating Paul Butler
by one, and Bryan Rought came third with 31.
Mike Chatt in division 1 birdied the 16th for the only ‘2’ of the day.
Near pins went to Mike Chatt (2), Terry Madsen, Alan Bissell, Robert Garrick
and Bryan Rought.
Friday, August 1, Eastern Star – Stableford
There were seven groups out today and a lower cut than normal of
9-16 and 17+ in division 2. Some light cloud covering and a cool breeze
coming off the coast made it a perfect day for golf.
Playing off 19, Iain Walsh topped the division 2 podium with 42 points to
finish five clear of Rod Howett in second, who in turn beat Frank Kelly on a
21/18 back nine count back.
In division 1, Jeff Cargill won with 39 points ahead of Mikael Andersson in
second on 36 and Steve Jones third with 35.
Iain Walsh birdies the 6th for the only recorded ‘2’ of the day.
Near pins were shared between Mikael Andersson, Arthur Hancock, Steve Jones,
Wilf Latham, Kai Anda, Paul Hartley, Frank Kelly and Bryan Rought.
It was great to see back Miss Nut and Don Head and the Bristol boy Bob
Poole.

Woes of a perennial bridesmaid
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Jim Cooper and Roger Wilkinson.
Andy Rich
It is strange how the mind plays tricks on us all and we tend to forget
the truth when bemoaning our luck when playing golf. The times I have heard
people, including myself, moaning about missing three or four simple putts in
the round and forgetting about the two twenty-footers that did go in.
My old mate Derek Thorogood has for some weeks now been moaning that he is
always the bridesmaid and never the bride and this past week he finished with a
second and a third place just to prove his point. So I looked up his record for
this year and found that he had been the bridesmaid (runner-up) seven times and
the bride (winner) eight times, which makes him very forgetful and an outright
bigamist.
Monday, July 28, Bangpra - Stableford
On Monday it was off to Bangpra to do battle with the monkey course
once again and the low scoring of the previous week continued. Simon Tapster and
his 33 points was good enough to take the honours, leaving Derek Thorogood
holding the bouquet (again) in second place and Michael Maguire filling in as
pageboy and taking third.
1st Simon Tapster (13) 33pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (15) 31pts
3rd Michael Maguire (20) 30pts
Wednesday, July 30, Burapha A & B - Stableford
Burapha was the venue on Wednesday and the scoring doldrums
disappeared over the horizon when Jimmy Cooper rattled off 37 points to beat his
handicap and the rest of the competitors to take first place. Bob Cannon stepped
into second place after beating Derek Thorogood on count back. How unlucky can
one man get? My heart goes out to you Derek.
1st Jim Cooper (15) 37pts
2nd Robert Cannon (19) 34pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (15) 34pts
Friday, August 1, Pattavia Century - Stableford
The TRGG finished up the week with a trip through the pineapple
fields and on to Pattavia Century. Roger Wilkinson made a fine return to form by
taking the course apart which is not easy on those rolling greens. He ended up
with 39 points which was far too good for the rest of the field and he finished
top of the leaderboard.
Richard Talbot, well recovered from running in the Pattaya Marathon finished in
second place, which was a marked improvement on where he finished in the
marathon. Big Magnus Alvarsson took third place on the podium.
1st Roger Wilkinson (13) 39pts
2nd Richard Talbot (15) 35pts
3rd Magnus Alvarsson (12) 32pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week. If you would like to play a
round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop
into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists
which are posted on the notice board.

Warberg takes monthly award at the last
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook (left) presents the MBMG Golfer of
the Month award to Dick Warberg.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, July 29, Crystal Bay - Stableford
On the morning as we met at Tropical Bert’s the numbers finalised at
25 as a couple of players were said to be suffering the aches and pains that the
passage of ‘Father Time’ brings to the fore. Still, we had 7 groups and an easy
drive to the course as the traffic proved to be fairly light.
After a quick change and onto the first tee we found we were to play the C & A
Nines in that order. We were able to get away a bit early and soon were onto the
first green where we found the problem that was to plague us all day. The greens
were in terrible condition. By that I do not mean badly cut or sanded or
anything so mundane. The greens were just covered in many coloured grasses. To
putt over them was a lottery and the worst was the very deep green patches that
seemed to act like velcro and not only slowed the ball down but threw it all
over the place.
The weather was fine, except for a strong wind that seemed to rise occasionally,
the fairways were in good condition, and the rough reasonable. This course
really has to sort out those greens as they spoil what we all thought, that this
could be a super course, with decent greens.
There has been some work on the facilities here and the showers seem better but
the restaurant is still a bit dingy, although the staff there are very good and
helpful.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results and in the A Flight, 0 to 18,
the winner was Alan Sullivan with 40 points ahead of Ton Herrington in second
with 39 points on count back over Brian Parish in third. Good scores on the
rough greens.
In the B Flight one man won by a street as Dick Warberg won with 43 points. In
second was Brad Robins with 35 points and in third was Frank Pilkington with 33.
This was also The MBMG Golfer of the Month day and after this day’s results we
had a four-way tie that went to count back. However, with a great last day Dick
Warberg won on count back over Tom Herrington, Brian Parish and Max Scott. So
congratulations to Dick, the MBMG Golfer of the Month.
Near Pins: Dick Warberg, Brian Parish ( 2), David Nicholson
Long Putt: Takeshi Hakozaki, David Nicholson
Friday, August 1, Plutaluang - Stableford
T’was the first day of August, and the ever-hopefuls gathered at
Tropical Bert’s to compare strategy for the day’s round. With good weather
forecast (and thankfully this proved to be true) players could concentrate on
their golf game for the day.
The destination was the Thai Navy course, which seems to be a “love it or hate
it” course, but the great majority fall into the “love it” category. Challenging
yet always interesting, you must keep your mind in the game as the geography of
the course allows each hole to be unique. This day the group was assigned the
East and South courses. Some say this is the easiest combination, but that
doesn’t mean it is easy!
The Navy course always separates true golfers from the hopefuls. The top scores
were good but also showed the course deserves respect. This day Andre Van Dyk
(15) once again took over the winner’s circle, sailing home with a winning 37
points. Well done!
A few weeks ago Bob Watson (5) made sure everyone knew he was back in town by
winning, and this day Bob made sure we won’t forget him too soon by taking
second with 36 points. Bob is heading to his “other home” for a couple months
and we wish him well. Third place went to Darren Sargood (13) with 34 points,
and fourth to Steve Hamstad (12) with 33.

Danboise edges Pelly down the home stretch
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Friday winners (from left): Keith Dyson, Geoff
Christie & John Stafford.
Monday, July 28, Burapha - Stableford
16 Outbackers played the C and D loops from the white tees on an overcast
day which took a turn for the worse as the last three groups had to finish
in torrential rain. However, the course was in top condition which produced
some great scoring, particularly from Kim Danboise and Dennis Pelly who both
finished with 41 points each.
Heaven knows what Dennis would have scored if the rains hadn’t arrived for
his last four holes as he only managed to pick up one point on each of them.
Anchor throw? Comes to mind; Nay perish the thought – it really did rain
hard and Dennis could barely see through his glasses. But the disappointing
finish cost him the win as he lost on c/b to the in-form Kim Danboise.
Ivan Plunkett was third with 39 and Keith Dyson secured his first podium
place here at the Outback, taking fourth with 38, whilst wily ‘not so much
of the old’ Bobby Driggs was fifth with 36 points.
Geoff Christie had two ‘2’s (8th & 11th), Jim Brackett & Ivan Plunkett both
on the 5th and Kerry Rothman another on the 11th.
1st Kim Danboise (16) 41pts
2nd Dennis Pelly (13) 41pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (21) 39pts
4th Keith Dyson (30) 38pts
5th Bobby Driggs (14) 36pts
Tuesday, July 29, Bangpra - Stableford
Our visits to Bangpra have moved to Tuesdays for the next couple
of months or so, to make way for Laem Chabang on Wednesdays, which is
currently offering golf at a fantastic price.
11 here today, which isn’t too bad for a Tuesday, on a course that was
practically empty apart from some groups of caddies playing and one 5-ball;
yes you’ve guessed – the one in front of us. It wasn’t really the starter’s
fault as they started as two different groups and teamed up when they were
out of sight on the third. So it was a painful two and a half hour front
nine but they did get the gee-up from the marshall on the back-nine,
scooting round in two.
Bobby Driggs had the best round of the day with 36 points, beating the
consistent Kiwi 5 handicapper, Geoff Christie by one as John Low got the
better of General Jack on c/b, both with 31.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Bobby Driggs (14) 36pts
2nd Geoff Christie (05) 34pts
3rd John Low (13) 31pts
4th Jack Moseley (21) 31pts
Wednesday, July 30, Laem Chabang - Stableford
A fine day with light cloud made conditions very pleasant for the
four groups who played Mountain and Lake at Laem Chabang today. It was good
to have a rest from the tough C course, where we have been starting for some
time now but I thought the greens on A (Mountain) needed a bit longer to be
in top condition.
The rating for this course from the whites is a low 68.6 and the high scores
reflected this, as only one person in the field of 15 shot less than 31
points, quite a remarkable statistic!
Steve Durey, who loves this course, had a great 43 points to win from Laem
Chabang member Tony Garnett with 39, and John Low (38) beat Mike Missler on
c/b in the battle for third and fourth.
Sakorn had a ‘2’ on A7 as did John Low (B8) who after a great tee shot had a
tap-in for his birdie.
1st Steve Durey (21) 43pts
2nd Tony Garnett (14) 39pts
3rd John Low (13) 38pts
4th Mike Missler (08) 38pts
Friday, August 1, Green Valley - Stableford
31 players enjoyed their golf at Green Valley today and once
again complements must go to the ground staff for keeping the course in such
good nick, especially during the extraordinary dry weather during what is
supposed to be the wet season. With sticky, but relatively cool conditions,
the scoring was very high with four players scoring 40 points or more.
Kiwi visitor, Geoff Christie finished the week on a high, winning Div A with
39 points off his 5 handicap, followed home by Mike Missler (36) and Peter
LeNoury (35).
John Stafford is obviously fighting fit again after some recent surgery and
has absolutely no chance of a handicap review, only downwards, as he amassed
a brilliant 43 points to win Div B by three from the in-form Dennis Pelly
who scored 40 points today, to follow his 41 on Monday at Burapha. Kerry
Beck, who has just returned from a quick trip down to Aus, was third with
39.
The best round of the day was returned by the fast improving Keith Dyson
with 44 points, from Tim Knight who at last has shown what he can do when he
puts 18 holes together; in recent months, Tim has been scoring on only about
13 or 14 holes! Well done the pair of you, both having four ‘4 pointers’ on
their cards and Keith has received a handicap adjustment down to 28.
Welcome back to Bryce Stick and also to Waldo’s son, Matthew having his
first hit with the Outback.
There were six ‘2’s from David Davies (5th), Jim Brackett (8th), another
from Jim (12th) plus Bob Finley & Greg Hill on the 12th and Rick Evans on
the 16th.
Div A (0-11)
1st Geoff Christie (05) 39pts
2nd Mike Missler (08) 36pts
3rd Peter LeNoury (10) 35pts
Div B (13-18)
1st John Stafford (18) 43pts
2nd Dennis Pelly (13) 40pts
3rd Kerry Beck (13) 39pts
Div C (19+)
1st Keith Dyson (30) 44pts
2nd Tim Knight (27) 40pts
3rd Bob Mattes (22) 36pts

Declan & Donal - stars to be sure
PAGS July Monthly Golf Tournament
A Flight winner - Declan Kelly
(center).
Clear skies and a light breeze met the players
on their arrival at Green Valley to play in July’s PAGS Tournament on Wednesday
30th. The golf course was in good shape, despite following a different flow of
holes again, as the management seem to search for the most customer friendly
set-up.
This was the 7th PAGS tournament of the year and saw a good field of 90 odd
players test their skills in an effort to move up the Order of Merit for the end
of year prizes, to go with the great variety of prizes on offer for the day.
There were some outstanding scores here today, with the Ladies & C Flight
showing the way with several 40+ point returns.
Once again with the numerous sponsors offering technical prizes on every hole,
as well as 1st, 2nd & 3rd in each of the 3 Men’s flights and 1st & 2nd available
to the Ladies that teed it up on this day meant there were plenty of chances to
take home a little something.
2 Long Drives winner - Mika
Viljakalken (center).
There were only 3 players that picked up the
maximum of 2 technicals this month; Mika Vijakalken picked up both the under-55
Long Drives, Donal McGuigan a Long Drive and an approach in the 55-64 age group,
while Nick Omarel picked up 2 approaches. PAGS policy of each player winning a
maximum of 2 technical prizes means any excesses go into the “lucky draws”, and
although there were no excessive winners today there were still plenty of lucky
draws to be won. With only a few double ups this month it meant that the prizes
were shared around amongst many well satisfied players.
Declan Kelly (H/cap 13) was this month’s A Flight winner with a solid 38 points,
ahead of Shaun Merriman and Gerd Riedler, both with 37. Mika Viljakalken also
had 37 points but was eliminated on count back after 18 on the Back 9, while
Shaun & Gerd both had 20, before Shaun got the nod on the last six, 13 to Gerd’s
12.
B Flight required a count back to decide the winner after Christer Silvandersson
(14) and Mihail Iordache (17) both signed for 37 points; Christer prevailing
19/18, while Leo Ruukanen (16) got the remaining podium spot with 36 points
after a back nine of 19, to edge Patrice Bardy & Dennis Steele with 18 & 15
respectively.
The C Flight was hotly contested with some hot scores to go with it. Thiery
Temime (28) led the way with 45 points, while another good score, this time by
Terrence Marney (26) with 40 points got second spot ahead of Henry Wong (21)
with a respectable 39 points.
The Ladies flight also required a count back after both Noi Emmerson (18) and
Yui Bietry (14) recorded good scores of 40 points each. Both players had 19 on
the back nine, with Noi having 14 on the last six to edge Yui with 13.
Congratulations also go to Low Gross winner this month, Mike Allidi, who went
around in a creditable 75.
PAGS continues to enjoy great support, with the free BBQ at Shenanigans becoming
a fine social event in its own right, and family and friends all come along to
support the players. Again on this evening there was plenty of good cheer and
well wishes for the participants after another most enjoyable tournament, and
all look forward to August’s event at Treasure Hill on 27th. Contact Shane on

Qatari lads show some form
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
Ian Waddell (left) & Mike
Gerrard (right) after their round at Wangjuntr.
Tuesday, July 29, Greenwood -
Stableford
Tuesday saw us visit Greenwood with the C & A combination our
allotted test of the day. The course was in good condition with both
fairways and greens much better than several more high profile courses.
We had 3 groups today and moved along at a steady pace, under clear skies
with a light breeze to relieve some of the humidity. Jeff Wylie (H/cap 7),
who had not played to his handicap throughout July with SCR, finally
returned to some form and recorded a day’s best of 38 points. Stan Rees
(25), one of our regular visitors from Qatar, also showed some form to
record 34 points, along with SCR regular Jonathan Pratt (10); Stan getting
the nod over Jonathan on count back to the last 6, 13/9, after both recorded
17 on the back 9.
Near pins today went to Jeff & Martin.
Thursday, July 31, Wangjuntr - Stableford
Wangjuntr Valley was our venue for Thursday’s competition where
we played from the white tees at just over 6,000 yards, which made the
course a lot more user friendly for all. With 2 greens on each hole, today
we played to the left side greens, and despite some players seeing the
course for the first time, most were very complimentary on the conditions
and layout.
Jeff Wylie (7) was able to manage his way around for a day’s best of 36
points, ahead of Qatari visitor Ian Waddell (20) with 35 points. Third spot
was decided on count back with Mike Gerrard (16) just edging playing partner
Bill Hewitt (17) 15/12 after both signed for 32 points. With five par 3s on
the Valley course, near pins were spread around between Jonathan, Samorn,
Bill, with Mihail getting two.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam
Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after
50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from
here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting
prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome all
golfers, including ladies & seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver”
tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!

Bangpra – no monkeys, just rain
The Pattaya Golf Society at the Elephant Bar
A formidable four-ball: Masashi Iizumi, Mr
Len, Dianne and Tom Murphy, on the first at Mt Shadow.
1st Akifume Tate (15) net 72
2nd Paul Hird (14) net 74
T3rd Jon Batty (10) net 78
T3rd Anders Haglund (14) net 78
The Pattaya Golf Society played its monthly medal competition at Bangpra
on Monday 28 July. The five groups found the course in great condition,
with fairways and bunkers invariably offering excellent lies. The greens
were in their usual shape, well-presented and very grain-influenced.
Golfers who don’t understand how to read grain on Bangpra’s greens will
struggle a lot more than those who do.
Tail
gunners Bill Tunbridge, Toby Glass and Mick O’Donnell ensuring they stay in
the shade.
Play had been underway for about 90 minutes when the rain, which had been
threatening for a while, suddenly came down in buckets. Thankfully, Bangpra
is well served by many shelters so golfers didn’t have far to walk when
seeking cover. About an hour passed before the rain settled into a light
drizzle enabling play to recommence. Notwithstanding the large amount of
water that had fallen, the course was eminently playable. The greens,
particularly, played as if unaffected by the downpour – impressive.
Whilst the drizzle was light, and progressively became lighter, golfers
still struggled with the damp conditions. One of the first casualties is
distance; one or two clubs more are needed and this takes the average golfer
some holes before realisation hits. Another problem is swinging freely,
given the fact one’s clothes are wet and clingy.
It stood to reason, therefore, that scores on the second nine would be
significantly worse than those on the first. And indeed, with one notable
exception – the day’s winner – this proved to be the case. The winning round
of net-par 72 was testament to Akifume Tate’s powers of concentration during
what were trying conditions.
Back at the Elephant Bar, the presentation included a welcome to Paul Hird
from the UK, and welcome-backs to Garry Hookey, Australia, Larry Ang,
Singapore, and to the PGS’s Mr Len following his break from golf. Two
golfers who had enjoyed several rounds with the PGS over recent weeks were
“farewelled” - Anders Haglund who returns to Sweden, and Geoff Reynolds to
WA, Australia.
There were two ‘2’s, from Geoff Reynolds on 8, and Paul Hird on 17.
It’s a credit to this course’s green-keeping staff that the course can take
the deluge it did, and still offer an excellent test of golf. Well done
Bangpra.
Greenwood –
great VFM
1st David Thomas (10) 36pts
T2nd Toby Glass (23) 35pts
T2nd Tim Dale (12) 35pts
On Wednesday 30 July, the Pattaya Golf Society took a modest number of just
three groups to Greenwood to play a stableford round on the C and A nines.
The weather, apart from a few drops that threatened but came to nothing, was
surprisingly humid, continuing the unusual spell of April-like conditions we
have experienced of late.
The course was superbly presented with fairways offering perfect lies,
bunkers well-kept, and greens that were true and consistent. The Sports Day
price of 650B green-fee is outstanding value-for-money.
The PGS welcomed two new members, Mick O’Donnell and Bill Tunbridge, both
from Australia. We also said a fond farewell to John Tallett who is
returning home to the UK.
With an empty car park, it looked like millionaire’s golf was in prospect
until the starter informed one of our group that his shirt did not meet
dress requirements. The shirt in question was a casual shirt, complete with
collar and buttons from top to bottom. It was the buttons that were the
offending item apparently. Only polo shirts allowed. One of our members had
a spare “conforming” shirt, so off they went to change things. TIT!
With only two podium places likely, the competition was keen and close. Many
scores in the low-to-mid thirties were recorded, but it was two Australians
that got up for a share of second place. Playing his first round since
receiving his official handicap was Toby Glass. His 35 points reflected an
excellent first-up effort, especially given his chaperone responsibilities
towards the big-hatted newbies. Also on 35 points was Tim Dale who, sadly,
was playing his last round with us this trip. The winner, by the narrowest
of margins, was current organiser David Thomas.
There were no ‘2’s.
Greenwood – well worth the extra ten minutes.
Mt Shadow –
fairways with run
1st David Thomas (10) 40pts
2nd Akifume Tate (15) 35pts
T3rd Wichai Tananasorn (7) 34pts
T3rd Murray Edwards (21) 34pts
Friday 1 August saw the Pattaya Golf Society take four groups to Mountain
Shadow for the month’s first stableford competition. The course was well
presented with fairways that were hard and fast, yet still offered
reasonable lies. Putting surfaces are nearly back to their usual excellent
condition following recent coring, and many tee-boxes are roped-off whilst
they benefit from sanding and re-sowing. This meant the blue markers were
slightly forward on most tees.
This course has always had appeal but the tired state of the locker-rooms,
particularly the showers, has detracted from its allure. Following
refurbishment, this is no longer the case. The men’s shower block has
undergone a major upgrade bringing the facilities into line with the rest of
the course. At 1050B green-fee caddie-fee it certainly represents excellent
VFM.
Two long-serving members were welcomed back; Masashi Iizumi from Japan and
Wichai Tananusorn following his UK holiday.
The course was set up for good scores especially given the clement whether,
but on the whole scoring was modest with many in the low-to-mid 30s. Making
the podium and playing his first game since returning home, Wichai
Tananusorn went out with 20 points, but folded on the back-nine with 14. His
playing partner, Akifume Tate, did the reverse, with a front nine of 14
followed by a back-nine of 21. Perhaps the hard luck story belongs to Murray
Edwards who, courtesy of a driver who lost his way, was late for his
tee-off. Being first off, he had no time for warm-up exercises or practice
swings. The one stableford point earned from his first three holes bore
testament to that.
The standout score of 4-under net par belonged to Mr Len’s humble assistant,
David Thomas, whose constant tinkering just may be about to pay dividends.
There was one ‘2’, at the 5th achieved by Murray Edwards.
The booby bevy was given to Masashi Iizumi, more as a welcome-back gift than
anything else. Another fun day at a lovely course, enjoyed by all.

Cox cruises to victory at Navy
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Stars of the week, Rab
McDonald, Geoff Cox and Geoff Parker celebrate back at The Ranch.
Monday, July 28, Green Valley – Medal
It was a cloudy morning with a fresh breeze blowing as we
teed-off to tackle the popular Green Valley course for our second stroke
play competition of the month. Everything progressed smoothly for the first
seven holes, but then a heavy rain shower moved in and we were forced to
take a 10 minute break at the nearby drinks stop.
Although the rain eased off, there was still persistent, light drizzle for
the next few holes, but the condition of the course wasn’t seriously
affected, and the conditions actually became quite pleasant for the final
half dozen holes.
A few of the less hardy golfers had decided to call it a day, and duly
received a rain check for nine holes, but the more hardy golfers still had
an enjoyable round as the weather improved. Geoff Parker managed to take one
stroke off Colin Greig on the 18th hole to take first place, and Tony
Robbins was a further stroke back to take third.
1st Geoff Parker (14) net 72
2nd Colin Greig (7) net 73
3rd Tony Robbins (14) net 74
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Colin Hammond and Steve Durey.
Wednesday, July 30, Plutuluang N & W – Stableford
Our last game of the month took us to the Navy course on a bright
sunny morning to play a Stableford competition on the difficult North and
West nines.
The race for the Golfer of the Month title was still wide open, with recent
good performances from Geoff Parker and Tony Robbins bringing them up to
challenge Gerry Cooney, who has led the way for most of the month. The star
of the day however, wasn’t one of the title contenders, it was Geoff Cox who
produced a stellar performance with a round that included one birdie, and 11
pars giving him an unbeatable score of 44 points (79 gross off his 15
handicap!).
To put Geoff’s achievement in perspective, this is the best score that your
scribe can remember on these two nines in the history of the Bunker Boy’s
society, and was certainly Geoff’s best performance in recent years.
Tony Robbins was the best of the title contenders, but a closing run of only
two points over the last three holes, deprived him of the second place
finish which would have secured him the title. Colin Greig took the second
place spot on a count back with nineteen points on the inward nine against
Tony’s seventeen.
Geoff Parker sneaked into fourth place with 32 points (including a two
stroke penalty for playing the wrong ball), but it was enough to win the
July title by a margin of one point, ahead of both Gerry Cooney and Tony
Robbins who ended tied in second place.
1st Geoff Cox (14) 44pts
2nd Colin Greig (7) 35pts
3rd Tony Robbins (14) 35pts
Near Pins: Geoff Cox (2) and Colin Greig (2).
Friday, August 1, Emerald – Medal
Near perfect golfing weather today to start the new month with a
medal competition at The Emerald course. It’s fair to say the course has
improved significantly since our previous visit last month, with most of the
new grass on the fairways beginning to bed in, and the greens returning to
their previous good condition.
The course was quiet and the round progressed smoothly with the leading
three-ball completing the round in well under four hours.
It was a day when Rab McDonald re-found his form after a slump which has
seen his handicap rise from 11 to 15 over the first fifteen games of his
visit. Rab’s score of net par was enough to clinch the top spot one stroke
ahead of Colin Grieg, with Steve Durey taking third place a further stroke
behind.
We welcomed back Lee Butler today after almost a year’s absence from golf
whilst he was concentrating on building a new house, and his caddy made it a
memorable day by driving straight over a concrete post and breaking the
drive shaft of the buggy! Fortunately Lee was playing in the final group,
and after waiting for a replacement buggy to arrive, it took the group the
best part of an hour to play the final two holes, and still nobody caught
them up.
At the presentation Rab McDonald received his KPK Food voucher and was in
high spirits (supplying an endless stream of jokes) for the first time in
weeks –amazing how a return to form can make the world seem a brighter
place!
1st Rab McDonald (15) net 72
2nd Colin Greig (7) net 73
3rd Steve Durey (21) net 74
Near Pins: Rab McDonald (2) and Mashi Kaneta.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf
competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663

Eng Cotterell sweeps DeVere monthly trophy
PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar
Monday, July 28, The Emerald - Stableford
With three groups playing at the Emerald we got away just after 9
a.m. and it was just as well as when we finished and were having a
drink the rain came down in bucket loads. The course is in good
condition both the greens and fairways where renovation work has
taken place played very good.
Eng
Cotterell (left) receives the DeVere trophy from Brian Chapman.
We had one stand out performer today, Steve Compton with 39 points,
and second was a long way back with Owen Walkley getting that spot
with 32 and third went to Brian Maddox, beating Greg Hill on a count
back with both on 31 points each.
There were no ‘2’s.
Wednesday, July 30, St. Andrews – Stableford
Our normal venue of Green Valley was closed to us, for a
quite large tournament was being played there, so we were put onto
St Andrews with 34 players and it was a big day out for some who had
never played here before. St Andrews is a course that doesn’t take
prisoners as some players found out today.
Steve
Compton & Owen Walkley.
We were joined by David Hutchison and his wife Cynthia over from the
Philippines for a break and to play some golf. David, who plays off
scratch, had a great day with a one under round off the stick.
The rain threatened but didn’t eventuate so it turned out to be a
good day for golf with just high cloud. The course was in good
condition with the greens just lightly sanded but running true.
It was the monthly DeVere trophy today, sponsored by Brian Chapman
from the DeVere Group and we had a count back for fifth place with
the spot being taken by Bill Marsden on 33 points. Fourth place went
to Brian Maddox with 35 points, being beaten on a count back by
Steve Compton, second went to Dave Hutchison with a great one under
gross with 37 points, and taking the winner’s DeVere trophy with a
fantastic 38 points was Eng Cotterell. Hope the shirt and hat fits
or Cottee will have his hands on them for sure.
There were four ‘2’s today, coming from Dave Hutchison, Bill
Marsden, Steve Compton and Auke, who dropped the ball about 4 inches
from the cup on the third and it stayed there for a tap in birdie.
Friday, August 1, Greenwood - Stableford
Greenwood on Friday was in beautiful condition. We got a
little bit of drizzle on us at about halfway round but it didn’t
last long enough for anyone to get wet. We were joined today by
Chris Wilmott and Jimmy Groves, back from their latest stint on the
rigs.
Playing from the longer white tees the scores were quite incredible,
with that young man from the States giving us a lesson as he did on
Wednesday at St Andrews. Steve Compton, playing off his 20 handicap,
recorded a score on 40 points to win the day by 4 points over Eng
Cotterell who secured second on a count back over Mal Farquharson.
There was only one ‘2’ and yes that’s right it went to the Cotterell
family again with Wayne getting it this time.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club
Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. If you are looking for a
game of golf, give Bob a call on 082 204 3411.

Buckingham head and
shoulders above the field
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Graham Buckingham.
Monday, July 28,
Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
1st Graham Buckingham (22) 35pts
2nd Tom Cotton (22) 29pts
3rd Kenny Chung (24) 26pts
4th Hugh O’Donnell (31) 26pts
Pattaya Country Club was the game today, just a short 20 minutes from
Pattaya and we got off the first tee 15 minutes early under overcast and
windy conditions. The first rain to stop play this year came on the 14th
hole and delayed us for about 40 minutes. Despite this, the course was
very dry due to the recent lack of rain. The greens were ok but some
were very fast.
Back in the clubhouse a goodbye went out to Graeme Lomas, heading back
to Sydney, Australia.
Graham Buckingham was the winner today with 35 points, six up on Tom
Cotton in second with Kenny Chung taking third on a count back from Hugh
O’Donnell.
Gerd Riedler wins his third monthly mug
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan
Gerd Riedler, Sandy
Lieper, Martin Kempton & Alain Taddei.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, July 28, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
It was time for our monthly visit to Mountain Shadow and we had 22
players on the starting sheet. We met at The Growling Swan and a hearty
welcome was handed out to Sandy Leiper who was returning after a few
weeks off due to a leg injury. It was time to say farewell to Paul
Sharples who is returning to his work in Oman at the weekend and Dick
Braimbridge who is off to Australia before commencing an assignment in
The Solomon Islands.
All were on time so we departed the GS right on 8.30 am and after 45
minutes we arrived at the course which was practically deserted. After
booking in we went down to the first tee and our first four-ball got
away 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.45 a.m. Under overcast skies we
proceeded at a steady pace, enjoying the good condition of the course
and ever alert to the quickness of some of the greens which were in good
“nick”.
Alain Taddei, Sandy Leiper
& Ebrahim.
We completed the front nine in a touch over 2 hours
and after a couple of holes the skies above were getting darker and
darker & as we walked down the 12th fairway after teeing off a severe
squall hit us, forcing us to take shelter under a tree on the fairway
and after 10 minutes we decided to make a run for the drink stop before
the 13th tee. We made it, getting drenched in the process and sat it out
for around 45 minutes until the rain had almost stopped, as it
invariably does here in Pattaya. We then continued our round in light
drizzle all the way but the course was draining well and there were no
problems on the greens.
We managed to complete the full round in four hours & fifty five minutes
which included the 45 minute break but unfortunately 3 golfers had
decided not to continue due to the rain and pulled out just after half
way. Not the most enjoyable round ever but we were out there doing what
we love to do and were thankful that we were able to finish reasonably
unscathed..
Ebrahim reveled in the conditions and won the A Division with a fine 39
points, 2 points ahead of Mike “Hunter” Gosden in second place and
despite losing another shot on the weekend it was John Pierrel finishing
in third spot with 36 points.
Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei won the B Division after scoring 35
points and with 2 golfers on 31 points the resultant count back saw Bob
Akapita (16 point back nine & 9 on the last 6 holes) finish second from
John Davis (16 point back nine & 8 points on the last 6 holes) who
finished in third place. I must also report that for the first time ever
a nearest the pin reward had to be shared as the tee shot results on the
15th could not be separated.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award for the worst score on the day was won by
the returning Sandy “Cindy” Leiper.

Thursday, July 31, Bangpakong – Stroke/Monthly Mug
It was that time again when we play our one and only stroke
round of the month in competing for the Growling Swan Monthly Mug and
this month’s challenge was at the classy Bangpakong Riverside Country
Club. Numbers were down mainly due to some of our regular golfers
deeming it a bit too far to travel so we ended up with 22 true and keen
golfers ready to compete for the Mug.
We handed out hearty welcome to John O’Donoghue from Newcastle in New
South Wales, Australia, Mike Omiya from Hawaii and old friend Ernie
Picken from Melbourne who was celebrating his 69th birthday. Also it was
great to see good friend Walter Baechli back with us after his cycling
tour around Albania, Montenegro and Greece, to mention just a few of the
countries that he passed through.
After a 67 minute drive we arrived at the course where it was not too
busy. We had driven through drizzling rain at times on the journey and
the skies were overcast creating quite humid conditions but as always we
were confident of the weather being kind to us. After waiting for a
couple of Thai groups to tee off we finally got away 5 minutes before
our scheduled 10.00 am time and thankfully the groups in front who were
all in carts soon disappeared into the distance.
The golf course was in magnificent shape with pristine fairways and the
greens, although a few of them had still a bit of sand remaining, were
in excellent shape, even the temporary green on the par three 4th.
We proceeded at a fair pace with Gerd playing some excellent golf and at
the turn he was 2 under the card after carding 3 birdies. I rarely
mention individuals in my write-ups but it was a pleasure to watch this
guy who is currently on top of his game.
The weather had been fine so far but as we were preparing to putt on the
13th green a heavy shower caused us to take shelter for about 10 minutes
but then it was over and we continued. We completed our round in four
hours & twenty minutes which included the rain stoppage and Gerd did
falter a little but still came in with a 73 off the stick. It had been a
very enjoyable round with terrific company and some super golf was
observed.
In addition to the Monthly Mug award we were able to have 2 divisions
with 3 prizes in each. There were also rewards for nearest the pins all
the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
As I expected Gerd Riedler’s 73 gross was good enough to enable him to
win his third Growling Swan Monthly Mug as he ended up with a net 67 and
the A Division winner was Martin Kempton with a fine net 69. In second
place came Walter Baechli (net 34 back nine), winning a count back as
there were 2 golfers on net 70 with Mike Omiya (net 35 back nine) in
third spot.
Division B winner was Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei with a very good
net 68 and Gary Monley finished second with net 70. Another count back
was needed as there were 2 golfers with net 71 and that resulted in
birthday boy Ernie Picken (net 34 back nine & net 22 on the last 6 hole)
finishing third from Bob Akapita (net 34 back nine & net 23 on the last
6 holes).
Bob missed out on a podium finish but won a golf ball for playing to his
handicap or better along with Graham Buckingham, Ebrahim & yours truly.
Sandy “Cindy” Leiper did the double and retained the cherished NAGA
award.
