Charging buffalos star at Nongprue racing festival
Junior riders attempt to keep
their steeds on course at the annual Nongprue buffalo racing festival, held
Sunday, August 17 at Lake Mabprachan on the outskirts of Pattaya.
Jetsada Homklin
Cheering crowds, pounding hooves and flaying bamboo whips, with the
occasional spectacular tumble thrown in for good measure, were all part and
parcel of the annual Nongprue buffalo racing festival, held Sunday, August
17 at the shoreline of Lake Mabprachan.
The all day tournament, which was divided into 5 age and weight related
categories, has been held traditionally for the past 100 years, originally
as a way to pay respect to the buffalos for their hard work pulling ploughs
on the local farms but also in more recent years as a way to promote
tourism.
With the competitive juices flowing and the owners taking the tournament
very seriously, the animals were all looking their resplendent best for the
event, some of them even brilliantly and ornamentally decorated to take part
in a buffalo beauty contest that ran alongside the racing. There was also an
equally popular human beauty pageant “Nong Na Banna” which was won by
Benjamarth Bunming who received a winner’s cup and 3,000 baht in prize
money.
After the day-long stampede had ended and the dust had settled (quite
literally), the results of the racing were all tabulated by the panel of
judges and it was announced that Wai Ban Mabphai had won the main ‘Big’
level competition, beating out the challenge of the Chief Preecha Team for
the 6,000 baht top prize. The ‘Big Junior’ level racing class meanwhile was
won by the Team Village chief Suvit Khusree while the ‘Super Junior’ level
honours went to the J Nhongsak Team.
Aneak Pattanangarm, Nongprue municipal deputy mayor, Anyamanee Khumjan,
permanent secretary of Nongprue municipality, and Rear Admiral Pramote
Thapthim, vice permanent secretary of Nongprue municipality were on hand to
present trophies and cash awards to the winners and runners-up in each
category.

‘Easy Tiger’ wins Thailand
Platu National Championship
The victorious ‘Easy Tiger’ crew pose with the
Platu National Championship trophy at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, Sunday,
August 17.
The weekend of August 16-17 saw a keenly sailed battle for the Thailand
Platu 25th National Championships, which were held at Ocean Marina Yacht
Club in Pattaya.
Nine teams with 45 experienced Platu crews participated in the annual event
with the first day proving difficult due to unpredictable conditions and
lack of wind. Results showed some yachts coming first in earlier races then
dead last in the late afternoon legs. By day’s end the wind had completely
lulled leaving the yachts becalmed with a slow crawl around the course on
the last race.
The second day by contrast opened with magnificent weather and constant
wind, resulting in the teams sailing more competitively. As the wind
freshened so did the tension and adrenaline aboard all the boats, with the
mark roundings in particular being challenging and a lot more like
navigating a minefield of oncoming boats as they jostled for position. The
finishes were incredibly close with each boat constantly trying to scramble
for the extra couple of meters to beat out other yachts.
The ‘Easy Tiger’ Team won the Thailand National Platu Championship by one
point; headed by Captain Tom Spithill and Skipper Peter Winter and ably
supported by the Thai teenage crew from Royal Varuna Yacht Club consisting
of Lorenzo Cassio, Miki Romanyk and brothers Bobby and Alex Frefel. In
second place was the Stingray team led by Dylan Whitcraft, also hailing from
Royal Varuna Yacht Club.
Overall line honours went to ‘Kingdom Property’ in first place, followed in
second place by ‘Weasel’, ‘Easy Tiger’ third and ‘Stingray’ in fourth. As
the first two boats were crewed with foreign teams they didn’t qualify for
the National Award.
‘Easy Tiger’ prepares for another day at sea
battling fellow Platu’s for the national title.

Dolphins derailed at Khon Kaen

second half of their Division 1 match at the Khon Kaen Stadium on Sunday,
August 17. (Photo/Pattaya United FC)
Pattaya United’s recent charge up the Thai Division 1
table hit an unexpected speed bump last weekend as the Dolphins succumbed to
a 1-0 defeat at struggling Khon Kaen FC.
After a recent string of impressive results United were hoping to continue
their momentum with victory over the second bottom club on Sunday night, but
their hopes were undone by a 24th minute strike from Pitakpong Kulasuwan.
The Dolphin’s failed to close down on the Khon Kaen defender as he picked up
the ball in the penalty area and he proceeded to send a curling shot into
the far corner of the goal past the despairing dive of United keeper Sankla.
The Dolphins had chances in the game, the most notable of these falling to
Christiano Lopes, but the Brazilian striker saw his second half goal-bound
shot cleared off the line and his frantic appeals for handball waived away
by the referee.
Khon Kaen could have sealed the game themselves near the end of the match
but Sankla saved bravely at the feet of Karada. Deep into injury time United
forced a series of corner kicks, throwing everyone into the box in search of
an equaliser, but the home defence held firm and played out to the final
whistle.
United’s next league game is a home match against Chiang Mai FC on Saturday,
August 23. Kick-off at the Nongprue Stadium is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Near neighbours Sriracha FC fell to an unprecedented 23rd defeat of the
season when they lost 1-0 at home to TTM Lopburi last Saturday and with just
8 games left of the current season, relegation for the Marlins to the second
division is now all but assured.
In the Premier League, second placed Chonburi slipped three points behind
leaders Buriram after only managing a 1-1 home draw against Singhtarua. The
‘Sharks’ face a huge home match this coming Saturday against third placed
Muang Thong United.

Pachyderms on parade
at King’s Cup Polo tourney
Enjoy 4 days of King’s Cup
Elephant Polo at the VR Sport Club in Samut Prakan from Thursday, August 28
- Sunday, August 31. (Photo/Anantara Hotels)
The King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament is packing its
trunk and moving to Bangkok. This hugely successful charity event is now
entering its thirteenth year and due its popularity the event is moving from
its original home of Hua Hin to the Thai capital.
This year’s event will have 16 teams encompassing over 50 players, including
local television stars, supermodels and professional polo players. The
elephant festival will have something for everyone including an impressive
opening parade, Children’s Day, Ladies Day and a wide range of fun elephant
related activities for the whole family.
Although the teams are vying for the coveted King’s Cup trophy, the ultimate
aim is to raise awareness and money to better the lives of wild and
domesticated elephants throughout Thailand. To date over US$750,000 has been
raised, which has gone to various organisations helping elephants.
The event also allows the organizers to take 50 street elephants away from
their often harsh environment and provide them with a jungle like setting,
proper food, vitamins and full veterinary care which they otherwise don’t
normally get.
The tournament will take place at the VR Sport Club in Samut Prakan from
Thursday, August 28 - Sunday, August 31. The day’s matches start at 8 a.m.

Pattaya Sports Club pays
tribute to an old friend
Joe Mooneyham (left), VP
Pattaya Sports Club, presents a check to daughter and mother.
On 26 July 2014, Suraphol Komuthanond, former General
Manager at Khao Kheow Country Club unexpectedly passed away at the early age
of 53. He was a great supporter for the Pattaya Sports Club and for the past
several years had allowed the PSC to hold its annual PSC two day Club
Championship at the KKCC during January (which is the peak of the high
season) at a very attractive price. Every year at Christmas time, he would
come to the PSC office and give the staff a Christmas gift.
It was Suraphol’s dream that his daughter Songdaow Komuthanond attend Mae
Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai which was started by the His Majesty the
King’s mother many years ago. Songdaow is a 17 year old Grade 12 student and
is an outstanding scholar, carrying a 3.8 GPA.
A special golf tribute Fund Raising Day to Suraphol was held at Khao Kheow
on August 18. The green fees were donated to Suraphol’s family to send his
daughter to college in January next year. Over 200,000 baht was raised from
this event. The Pattaya Sports Club donated 25,000 Baht for her college
fund.
Suraphol will be greatly missed and we wish his family well and hope his
daughter Songdaow will be able to fulfill her father’s dream. Anyone wishing
to contribute to this fund, please contact Joe Mooneyham at 086 138 6072 or
Mike, President of EGA at 081 441 1330.

Road trip to cowboy country
PSC golf from The Golf Club
A group of Khao Yai cowboys.
Steve Ellison
Monday, August 11, Green Valley (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Thierry Danzas (21) 38pts
T2nd Zac Wood (3) 36pts
T2nd Peter LeNoury (11) 36pts
T2nd Wayne Cotterell (11) 36pts
T2nd Gary Emmett (18) 36pts
Does it get any better than this? Green Valley is in the best condition it
has ever been, and we must compliment the staff for doing such a great job.
Even the weather was perfect so yet another day of zillionaire’s golf in the
Kingdom.
36 seemed to be the number of the day as we had an unusual 4-way tie for
second place! It is so nice to shoot to your handicap and Zac, Peter, Wayne
and Gary all did just that. Zac Wood is the lucky nephew of our buddy Mark,
and plays off a mere 3 handicap. The guy is only 18 years old! What is it
with these Scotsmen that they are all such good golfers? Must be the single
malts they are raised on.
Smooth swinging Dale Shier in action.
Anyway, we had a great win once more from Thierry Danzas. He likes this
course and it would seem the course likes him as well. Thierry has won here
in the recent past and is working downwards on his handicap. Not an easy
thing to do when you have a full time job in Pattaya - Thierry is the F&B
manager at the fabulous Pullman resort in Wongamat Beach.
Tuesday, August 12, Panorama (blue tees) – Stableford
1st David Ferris (24) 32pts
2nd Phil Smedley (10) 31pts
3rd Steve Ellison (17) 29pts
Wednesday, August 13, Rancho Charnvee (yellow tees) –
Stableford
1st Ron Robertson (26) 31pts
2nd Phil Smedley (10) 30pts
3rd Steve Ellison (17) 29pts
This was our road trip for August, and it was great to get back up to Khao
Yai again. If you have not been here yet, it is a great getaway for a couple
of nights or a week long holiday as there are 7 golf courses to play up
here. You are up to a 1,400 foot elevation so it is always a bit cooler
here, and they say it is the cleanest air in Thailand, being at the doorstep
of the largest National Park.
Panorama was our first venue, and Khun James set us up with a fine golf
course. He is a generous host and runs the place very professionally, being
a very charming chap who speaks perfect English. Panorama is aptly named and
the camera was out on several holes. If you are taking company up there,
then this is a good course for partners as the huge and clean swimming pool
provides a welcome escape for the waiting ladies on tour.
Rancho Charnvee was on the agenda for Wednesday, and is a course we will
always play when we visit this region. Rancho has always been in top
condition and this day was no exception. It was the third day of perfect
weather as the overcast skies gave welcome shelter and we barely broke into
a sweat.
As the numbers above show, no one shot to their handicap but that didn’t
even matter, as we all had a great trip and will return here in October for
their Golf Festival, and hopefully play just a wee bit better!
Thursday, August 14, Subhapruek (white tees) – Stableford
1st Dale Shier (13) 33pts
2nd David Ferris (24) 30pts
3rd Phil Smedley (10) 29pts
This was our final day of the tour, so on the way back to Pattaya it would
have been crazy not to have a little break at Subhapruek. This is another
Pete Dye golf course (like Khao Kheow) and is perfectly maintained. Being a
Bangkok golf course, it is on the flat side but that will not disappoint as
the layout has plenty of other challenges.
This course is just off the Bagna-Trad highway and next to the big
Assumption University building that dominates the local skyline, so from
Pattaya allow for a 90 minute trip at most.
It was one of the usual suspects on the podium again as Capt. Phil was up
there for the last 3 days. Good shooting Phil! Dave (Big Wheel) Ferris came
good after his Panorama win to the tune of 30 big ones here. Dale Shier
broke his slump and swung his way to the highest score of the trip with a
big red 33 circled at the top of his card, very good going on this difficult
track.
At this point, we were all ready to head back to Pattaya and sleep in our
own beds for a much needed rest from the holiday in Khao Yai.
Friday, August 15, Pattaya C.C. (white tees) – Stableford
1st Gary Emmett (18) 37pts
2nd David Ferris (24) 31pts
3rd Phil Smedley (10) 30pts
And now for a round a bit closer to home. Well, a lot closer to home in fact
as the 23 minute sprint up the 36 took us to the continually improving
Pattaya Country Club. This place is starting to look good, the course is
settling in, and the new clubhouse is really starting to take shape. Yes,
the front nine is better than the back, but be patient and I am sure that
after the October rains the back nine will be right up there as well.
Ferris and Smedley were at it again as they powered on for a full week of
golf and were rewarded with 2nd and 3rd spots. The winner winner chicken
dinner kudos went to our Aussie buddy Gary Emmett, getting 37 points on the
card to slaughter the field by 6 strokes. Good on ya Gazza!

Ted & Noy make dynamic winning duo
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Ted & Noy with Kerry &Ti
Monday, August 11, Burapha A & B -
Stableford
Five groups of Outbackers played Burapha in cool conditions with
a light breeze blowing. We played A and B from the longer blue tees and
whilst there were two complaints about the length of the course (bearing in
mind that 33 or 34pts round here is handicap) 30 percent of the field played
to their handicap or beat it.
Sugar Ray returned to form to not only win Div B with 39pts but he took the
Kiwis’ money which really cheered him. The improving John Fitzgerald was
second with 36 and Bruce Mcadam third with 34, so watch out for those two in
a week or so’s time in Hua Hin.
David & Rose with Tim & Paew.
Jim Brackett won the top division with 37pts to make his
statement about his Hua Hin chances and the recently returned John
Cunningham edged out John Low on c/b with 34 for second.
We said a brief “Hello” to S K Kwok who turned up to play by surprise and
also to Vince Butler who was just passing through, as he often does.
Tony Aslett had the only ‘2’.
Div A (0–16)
1st Jim Brackett (08) 37pts
2nd John Cunningham (07) 34pts
3rd John Low (12) 34pts
Div B (17+)
1st Sugar Ray Handford (20) 39pts
2nd John Fitzgerald (18) 36pts
3rd Bruce McAdam (26) 34pts
Wednesday, August 13, Laem Chabang - Stableford
Even after some late withdrawals, we still had a good field of
five groups to play the magnificent Laem Chabang, this time starting on the
tough C loop before moving on to A.
John &Goy with Suzi & John
Lawton.
The handicaps were too uneven to split into two divisions
so we played in one division with podium places down to sixth.
Welcome to some new boys today, namely Graeme Smart, Owen Gray, Tony Hoare,
Ken Graham and Steve Vash and welcome back to Martin Burbidge and Gary
Oliffe.
The scoring was not that brilliant but the ever-consistent John Low, who has
just about avoided the handicapper for his entire trip, was the winner on
c/b with 34pts from Kim Danboise. Thierry Temine was third with 33 whilst
John Fitzgerald, Martin Burbidge and Martin Kingswood all had 32.
We said goodbye to Kiwis, John Low, Dion Lane and Carl who is just starting
the game and didn’t return a card and we will see you next year guys.
We are not at Laem Chabang for the next couple of weeks as we play the
Race2Bkk final at Thai Country Club on the 20th and the following week we
are in Hua Hin, when the only scheduled golf will be Monday 25th at Burapha.
Pierre Bietry (C5) and Martin Burbidge (C8) both had ‘2’s.
1st John Low (12) 34pts
2nd Kim Danboise (15) 34pts
3rd Thierry Temime (25) 33pts
Friday, August 15, Green Valley - Stableford
On a slightly overcast day 36 players turned out to battle it out
with the course. Today we had the third in our series of monthly better-ball
events and six of our regulars invited their caddies to play as their
partners. The caddies played really well, in some cases better than their
partners, but we had the last laugh when we said to one caddie, “Why did you
miss that putt? I said one ball left and you go one ball right”. Oh how the
worm can turn!
We had a great day and it is always a delightful sight to see the caddies
all spruced up and ready to show the boys how good they are.
Once again the course was in good condition and a challenge to all levels of
golfers. The greens were very fast and putts were missing the holes as the
greens had been cut that morning.
The winners were Ted Gardner and his caddie Noy, who I believe is his wife,
with 45pts. After them came two more teams on the same score – Thierry and
Sang and then Brian Wilkinson and Sugar. In fourth place were Kerry Beck and
his caddie (Ti) with 42 points. The other caddie to finish on the podium was
Paew, who played with Tim Knight.
1st Ted Gardner & Noy 45pts
2nd Thierry Temime & Sang 45pts
3rd Brian Wilkinson & Sugar Ray Handford 45pts
4th Kerry Beck & Ti 42pts
5th Bruce McAdam & Keith Dyson 42pts
6th Murray Hart & Dennis Pelly 41pts
7th Tim Knight & Paew 40pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road
along Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.

Bob’s sticky date
The Backyard Golf Society
Dan ‘The Diet Whiskey Man’ celebrates his win with the staff at
Blue Sky Bar.
After a few weeks with insufficient numbers for a
competition, the Backyard Boys returned to action at Emerald last Friday, August
15. We have several commuting oil and gas workers in our party so we usually
have to wait for a few of them to be back for a quorum.
The winner on the day and heading down rapidly in his handicap rating was Dan
‘The Diet Whiskey Man’. Obviously his incarceration a couple of months ago has
prompted ‘Diet’ to focus on his golf, much the same as McIlroy’s break-up with
‘what’s-her-name’.
Near-pin today was a fizzer, no one managed to properly judge the high level
wind and stay on the dance floor. Skins were well doled out, with 6 going to
Dannie ‘Beaker’ Larsen, 5 to ‘Diet Whiskey’, 4 to ‘Second-hand’ Bob, 2 to
‘Irish’ John and 1 to Russell ‘He’s a Victorian’ Benson.
WADA (the World Anti-doping Agency) can sleep well at night, the “pop the blue
tablet before golf experiment” conducted by ‘Diet’, ‘Golden Trowel’s Boyfriend’
and ‘Second-hand’ Bob showed absolutely no performance enhancement, with rumours
of a sun-dial competition proving to be unfounded.
‘Second-hand’ Bob was reported to have made an emergency dash off the course on
the back 9; apparently his sticky date pudding from Thursday night had a serious
affect on his svelte figure, prompting some to ask if sticky dates should be
provided to all racing car drivers before a GP!

Friends reunite for Tony Olcorn Memorial Shield
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Scramble winners: Glen Kendall, Fred Dineley,
Russell Calcutt & Ron Gillett.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, August 11, Greenwood A & C – Stableford
With several overseas visitors in town for Thursday’s tournament in
memory of Tony Olcorn, our Monday field was understandably boosted and we had 36
golfers on the start sheet, of which 35 were in the competition.
Hearty welcomes were handed out to Robert Pearce from Gosnells Golf Club in
Perth, Western Australia, Joseph Miller from Atlanta, Georgia in the USA,
Michael Prideaux & Tony Power from Melbourne, Hitoshi Abe and his pal Hiro from
Japan and from Brisbane David Marshall, Alby Uppington, Mike Seaton, Bucha
Seaton & Ron Carnall.
All were on time including Patrick so we departed the GS 3 minutes ahead of
schedule and arrived at the golf course to find it reasonably busy with several
Thais there due to it being a Public Holiday. Regardless of this we were able to
pay an excellent green fee rate of 550 baht by using their voucher system which
was excellent value at this fine golf course.
Michael Prideaux, Alain Taddei, Bucha Seaton &
Geri Crilly after Monday’s round at Greenwood.
After sorting out the vouchers, checking in and the usual
preparation we were ready to go and we had been allocated to play C & A nines in
that order. The weather was fine but hot & humid and the course was in splendid
condition with some of the greens very quick to catch out the “bold putting”
players, of which I was one several times. We proceeded at a fine pace and
although slowing down a touch in the heat we managed to complete a very
enjoyable round of golf in four hours & five minutes.
Scoring was tough on the day as only 2 golfers played to their handicap or
better and it was Michael Prideaux who won A Division with a fine 37 points and
3-handicapper, Mike Allidi, came second with 35 points. With 2 players on 33
points a count back was required which resulted in “Buffalo” Bill Steinman (18
point back nine & 14 points on the last 6 holes) securing third place from
Robert Pearce (18 point back nine & 12 points on the last 6 holes) in fourth
spot.
In Division B it was Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei who finished on top with
34 points, just 1 point ahead of Tony Power in second place. Another count back
was needed with 2 golfers scoring 31 points and the result of that saw Jayson
Schembri (18 point back nine) finish third from Keith “Kissy” Buchanan (15 point
back nine) in fourth spot.
With the best score of the day, 40 points, it was Geri “Birdy” Crilly who easily
won the C Division, with Alby Uppington coming second on 32 points and veteran
Hugh O’Donnell finishing third with 28. In yet another count back for fourth
spot it was Sandy “Cindy Lauper” Leiper (13 point back nine) who scraped in
ahead of Tiziano Dal Pastro (11 point back nine).
The Growling Swan NAGA Award for the worst score on the day was won by Bucha
Seaton
Division A (0-13)
1st Michael Prideaux (12) 37pts
2nd Mike Allidi (3) 35pts
3rd Bill Steinman (10) 33pts

1st Alain Taffei (16) 34pts
2nd Tony Power (17) 33pts
3rd Jayson Schembri (16) 31pts
4th Keith Buchanan (14) 31pts
Division C (22+)

Thursday, August 14, Plutaluang N & W 4-Person Scramble/Stroke
It was almost exactly one year ago that we were playing Plutaluang
when our good friend Tony “Spaggoni” Olcorn collapsed and tragically passed away
in the vicinity of the green on the par three N6, apparently from heart failure.
Tony was from Brisbane, Australia, and we decided to hold a memorial day in his
honour, with many of his friends from Brisbane coming over to partake in the
event.
There were 12 people that made the journey and also a terrific response from our
Pattaya golfers, which boosted the field to 46 - our second best field ever.
We arrived at the Navy course to find plenty of caddies waiting for us and not
too many other golfers there. After check in we were pleased to hear that we
would be playing the North & West nines and we all assembled at the North 1 tee
where a few words were spoken and a minute’s silence was observed by all. We
sent the 2 three-balls off first in fine and hot conditions with not much wind.
The golf course was in fantastic shape although some fairways were hard and dry,
but the greens were in the best shape most of us had ever seen them here and on
a few greens putting from above the hole posed problems, particularly on the N6
green which had a very tricky pin spot and it was suggested that “Spaggoni” was
looking down on us with a wry smile on his face.
Once again there was drama on the course as one of the kids who were swimming in
the water at the back of the N3 Lighthouse hole got into some difficulty and a
couple of our guys went to assist, namely Aaron Shorten who “stripped off” and
jumped in to help the kid who was indeed struggling. Upon reaching the safety of
dry ground the kid, along with his mates then ran off into the bush – T.I.T.
We proceeded at a very good pace and our four-ball completed the round in the
very good time of four hours & ten minutes. It had been a lot of fun with many
new friends being made and was enjoyed by all.
The groups were formed by doing a random draw, putting high handicappers with
low ones, and there were rewards for the first five places. There were also
prizes for nearest the pin on the par threes and longest first putts on the N9 &
W9 greens.
The winning team on the day and receiving the Tony “Spaggoni” Olcorn Memorial
Shield, kindly sponsored by Russell Calcutt, consisted of Glen Kendall, Fred
Dineley, Ron Gillett & Russell “Donkey” Calcutt with a net score of 56.6. In
second place was the team of Ebrahim, Ken Hole, Gary Monley & Tony Campbell with
a net 59 and coming third were John Pierrel, John Davis, Seesa Phompinmon &
Sandy “Cindy Lauper” Leiper with net 59.6.
Finishing fourth on the day were Mike “Hunter” Gosden, David Marshall, Aaron
Shorten & Alan Evans with a score of net 60.5 and in fifth place came Robert
Pearce, Steve Rosser, Hugh O’Donnell & Andrew “Turtle” Allen (net 29 back nine)
with net 61, winning on a count back from Martin Kempton, Stuart “San Miguel”
Rifkin, Mick Seaton & Toby Kreegher (net 31 back nine).
Near pins went to Geri Crilly (W3), Alby Uppington (W8), John Davis (N3) and
Tony Campbell (N6) while the Long Putt awards were won by Ken Hole (N9) and
Sandy Leiper (W9).
Because it was a team event there was no NAGA award today so it was then back to
The Growling Swan where there was a unanimous decision that the day had been an
outstanding success and a fitting tribute to our good friend Spaggoni – May he
rest in peace.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays &
Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with
transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or more information please contact

The Bear whimpers
IPGC golf from The Haven
Barry Winton & Shane Elder.
Monday, August 11, Greenwood A & C - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Shane Elder (23) 35pts
2nd Terry Hodgkiss (23) 32pts
3rd Hal Hart (21) 30pts
4th Ben Jackson (16) 30pts
5th Shuichi Kodaka (19) 29pts
6th Markku Tynell (23) 29pts
A very tough week of golf started at Greenwood on Monday, with the A and C
courses being the test of the day.
As a complete newcomer to Pattaya Shane Elder knew nothing about the course,
which may well have accounted for him posting the best score of the day as
it held no fear for him. Many of the regulars meanwhile fell afoul of the
wind and the speed of the greens, in spite of the excellent condition of the
course in all areas.
Shane’s one over handicap proved to be easily the best, with Terry Hodgkiss
getting nearest three strokes behind in second place. Hal Hart took third
spot after a count back over Ben Jackson, scoring a better 13 to 11 after
once again throwing a couple of blobs into an otherwise tidy card.
Shuichi Kodak was looking to be in contention after a slow start to the day
on the front nine but with a zero-pointer on the last he had to settle for
fifth after winning a count back with a better 16 to 12 over Markku Tynell.
With the course difficulty so high it was little surprise to find there were
no 2’s in either division.
Wednesday, August 13, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Barry Winton (5) 35pts
2nd Mike Dabanovich (13) 34pts
3rd Ben Jackson (16) 30pts
4th Celia Culverhouse (20) 30pts
5th Andrew Eaton (14) 29pts
6th Peter Koha (18) 29pts
The second test of the week was scheduled for Khao Kheow where the B and C
courses were in play and a stiff breeze meant that the big hitters would
probably win the day, which indeed they did as Barry Winton cruised through
the back nine in gross level par. Having used up all his handicap plus one
covering the front nine, what should have been a roar from “Mee the Bear’
sadly turned out to be only slightly more than a whimper as he lost the big
match in his fourball three down. Strange game this golf.
Mike Dabanovich, being undoubtedly the longest hitter playing out of Soi 13,
just missed out in second spot after a having a very tidy opening half as he
dropped out of the reckoning with a double zero return on the 16th and 17th
holes and a water ball on 18 from which he recovered for two points to
finish one off the pace.
Ben Jackson got the better of a count back for third place, winning it by 17
to 15, which left Celia Culverhouse in fourth position.
Andrew Eaton made sure of his place on the podium in fifth as he also won a
count back over Peter Koha with a stunning 21 to 20 result after they had
both slipped badly over the front nine holes.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but Mike Dabanovich
stroked one in on the island green eighth on A course to clean out the first
division pool. This birdie also put him four up, with Trevor Schirmer as his
partner, in his fourball game with the day’s eventual winner, whose own
partner sadly was the seemingly luckless Stephen Beard.
Friday, August 15, Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Don Everett (19) 33pts
2nd Allen Raaen (7) 32pts
3rd Terry Hodgkiss (23) 31pts
4th Shane Elder (23) 30pts
5th Jon Batty (10) 30pts
6th Kevin Blake (8) 30pts
And so to possibly the toughest test of the week, Bangpra with its
notoriously devilish greens. As expected the going was extremely difficult
with the best of the day belonging to Don Everett, a three over handicap
return that ensured the day would become the second non-counting event of
the week.
Allen Raaen ran him close, getting within a point but a zero-pointer on the
last ended his chance of the top spot. Terry Hodgkiss was again amongst the
podium placements in third place another shot behind after he had a poor
start, returning just 13 points but a fine back nine almost saw him through
and left him ruing the slow start to the day.
Shane Elder won a three-way count back for fourth with a best 16, leaving
Jon Batty in fifth and Kevin Blake in sixth after they had tied the back
nine on 15 apiece and Jon had a better 11 to 10 on the last six.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Celia Culverhouse swept the pool
clean in the second division as she tapped in from very short range on the
151 yard eighth after narrowly missing the hole in one and the special golf
bag on offer as always from the IPGC.
There was some great excitement amongst the caddies of the group that
included Mark Armstrong, the noted chef from Sydney, Kevin Blake and Russell
Gilroy, when a wagonload of monkeys descended upon their golf carts and
purloined the wonderful picnic spread that had been prepared by Mark. Much
to the dismay of the proposed feasters the monkeys then sat in the trees and
played with their lunch before devouring the lot.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at

Maiko makes hay at Bangpra
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Wednesday’s top three with one of
Bert’s finest
Wednesday, August 13, Bangpra – Stableford
What more can one say other than some of us are spoilt. We
get up every day and as golfers we are spoilt for choice - just look at all the
great courses we can go to. Continuing with that thought, on this day we were to
visit the ‘original’ great course in the area.
After a quick change we were on the 1st tee nice and early and we were able to
get away in good weather and with few people on the course.
Brian Parish (left) and Tom
Herrington (right) with a Bert’s helper.
The layout was in good condition but a strong
wind made it very tricky to play. The greens, as usual, proved testing and were
as fast as normal, but it was a good day on a really great course.
Back at Bert’s it was soon into the results and the winner on the day was Doug
Maiko with 38 points on count back from Dick Warberg in second. In third was
Maurice Roberts with 37 points while in fourth place was Mashi Kaneta with 35 on
count back over Kurt Ebentheuer.
Near pins went to Maurice Roberts and Max Scott (2)
Friday, August 15, Wangjuntr – Stableford
On Friday the gang at Tropical Bert’s made a special trip
out to Wangjuntr to play the Valley course. The trip was 90 minutes each way,
but most people rode in the van and lively conversation made the time go fast.
Much of the conversation centered on this unique venue, course strategy, and why
is there a “tr” at the end of Wangjuntr that is not pronounced?
All the courses at “Wangjun” excel in scenery, and to say the layout is
“challenging” is to be kind. You are never safe when there are bunkers in the
middle of the green! Word is the Jungle course is now fully open so another trip
is in our future to check it out.
The Valley course was made more difficult than necessary today due to the
fairways having grass longer than the rough, very unevenly cut, and rows of
grass clippings littering many fairways. Some greens still have quite a bit of
sand on them. That said, this is one place where you often put down your club to
appreciate the fantastic scenery.
The van ride back to Bert’s was quieter due to some people using the time to
catch up on sleep, and the rest spoke only in polite whispers out of respect.
Right!
Back at Bert’s the scores were posted, and it was obvious the course won this
day. No one broke handicap, a rare event. The winner of the day was Brian Parish
(H/cap 12) with 35 points while taking second was Tom Herrington (15) with 31,
followed by Ted Morris (12) with 30.
Near pin awards were collected by Mark West and Ted Morris.

Thomas takes victory at Navy
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Elephant Bar
Wednesday joint runners-up
Toby Glass (left) and Tom Murphy flank winner Wichai Tananusorn.
Plutaluang – A great day’s golf
1st David Thomas (9) 38pts
2nd Garry Olliffe (12) 36pts
T3rd Akifumi Tate (15) 35pts
T3rd Toby Glass (23) 35pts
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled south on Monday 11 August, making its
second visit to the Navy Course in the space of five weeks. As was the case
previously, we were allocated the East and South nines, the conditions of
which were much improved. The fairways offered both run and good lies, the
bunkers were well-presented, and the greens, particularly, were far better,
offering good, consistent putting surfaces.
The four groups enjoyed superb weather, hot but not excessively humid. The
starter got us off on time on a course surprisingly uncrowded given the day
was a public holiday. We were also grateful and impressed with the
green-fee-caddie-fee cost of 950B – great VFM, but on a public holiday,
especially so.
Many noted at our last visit that the attitude of the women caddies had been
poor. The opposite summed up our experience on this occasion. Their
willingness to make the day’s experience a pleasant one was clearly evident,
and much appreciated.
Scoring was close, with just three stableford points separating the top four
and David Thomas getting the win with a two point margin over Garry Olliffe.
There were two ‘2’s coming from the same two players; Garry Olliffe on S4
and David Thomas on the “drop-down” E5.
Back at the Elephant Bar, the presentation welcomed back the returning Garry
Olliffe from NSW, and Jeff Hunt from Northern Territory, Australia. Welcomed
for the first time was guest Steve Banbury, from Arizona, USA. Also today
saw the last round from David Wang this trip. He received the day’s booby
bevy to help him on his way home, to Shanghai, China.
Post presentation the group tucked into its meal – complimentary to all
golfers post their round – and reflected on a wonderful public holiday spent
on a lovely golf course: thank you Plutaluang.
Burapha
on Sports Day
1st Wichai Tananusorn (7) 36pts
T2nd Toby Glass (23) 33pts
T2nd Tom Murphy (18) 33pts
Wednesday 13 August saw the Pattaya Golf Society make the short trip to
Burapha and take advantage of the sports-day green-fee price of 700B.
Our four groups were allocated the C and D nines for our stableford
competition. Even allowing that the A and B nines were hosting a Thai
tournament, the course still appeared far from busy. Burapha can do that –
host a large number yet still function as if only half full. Our first
three-ball got away on time and proceeded without being held up, until the
last two holes where a small bottleneck occurred at the par-three D8 – our
17th.
The course has suffered through a marked lack of rain recently.
Notwithstanding, the fairways offered good lies and the greens were evenly
paced. On many holes the rough has been allowed to grow such that any errant
shot runs the distinct risk of being lost – a tough penalty for a shot only
marginally off-line.
Even though many scores were recorded in the low thirties, there was enough
of a wind to suggest such scores would be competitive. And that indeed
proved to be the case, as both Toby Glass and Tom Murphy, who both managed
33 stableford points, shared second place. The winner, Wichai Tananusorn,
was a clear three shots ahead with a commendable net-par round giving him 36
points.
Wichai also achieved to only ‘2’ of the day; at the tricky D8 – tricky
because it was playing into a stiff breeze at the time.
Back at the Elephant Bar the presentation welcomed back Michael Sim, from
Bangkok, and bar co-owner, Peter Reidy playing just his second round with
the PGS. American Joe Miller was awarded the sponsors free beer, whilst
Aussie Jeff Hunt’s efforts to pick up the booby bevvy, by allowing himself
to be floored by a wayward duck-hook, from Peter Reidy, were also
recognised.
Crystal Bay –
A bad joke
1st Jesper Hansen (16) 37pts
2nd Larry Slattery (18) 34pts
3rd Tom Murphy (18) 33pts
T4th David Thomas (9) 31pts
T4th Dave Allison (12) 31pts
T4th Garry Olliffe (12) 31pts
The Pattaya Golf Society took five groups to Crystal Bay on Friday 15
August, to play a stableford competition, and after being allocated the A
and C nines, the first group got underway on time.
The PGS played here recently, on 21 July, and reported our dissatisfaction
with the standard of greens, back then. We thought that they may be
improving, however, so made the decision to return. It would be a decision
we would come to regret.
The fairways are reasonable, and the general layout is good. The bunkers,
however, are often cut with a small vertical face around the edges, meaning
the ball, when landing, will often stop against a four-inch face leaving the
golfer with no shot. Apart from links-type pot-bunkers, nearly every other
green-side bunker is presented such that the ball will roll back away from
the edge, leaving some sort of shot to the green. Not at Crystal bay, where
the use of vertical-face finishing on many bunkers defies common standards
of bunker presentation. But it is on the putting surfaces where most golfers
will experience significant frustration.
For some time now, Crystal Bay has had trouble with their greens. Greens
have as much as four different grass-types, resulting in different
green-speeds depending upon which type of grass the ball passes over on its
way to the cup. In some cases there appears no grass at all, but here the
slightest imperfection will see the ball deviate sharply off line. The
result is three-putts become the norm.
There were two ‘2’s recorded today, but interestingly both were achieved
from off the green, at C7.
It was not surprising that on a course where historically scores in the high
30s and low 40s have been needed to win, today a score in the low 30s made
the podium. Dane, Jesper Hansen’s effort of breaking net-par was, under the
circumstances, a superb round of golf and deserving of first place.
Back at the Elephant Bar we said farewell to Irishman Larry Slattery and
Aussies Tom and Dianne Murphy.
A good day marred by sub-standard greens. We will not be returning any time
soon.

Plain sailing for Mod and Charlie
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Charlie Cox - winner at Pattavia Century.
Andy Rich
Monday, August 11, Pattavia - Stableford
What an inspiration the finish of the US PGA, the last Major
of the year, turned out to be for the game of golf. Half way through the
last round it was any one of four who could have won it and the lead was
changing hole by hole, turning the whole event into a fascinating and
exciting spectacle. Keeping one’s head in the heat of battle is a talent
most of us strive for but rarely achieve. Unless of course it is a
Monday and you turn out for a TRGG golf competition and your name is
Charlie Cox.
Mod
Chaviraksa - winner at Mountain Shadow.
Charlie Cox for the last couple of months just rolls out of bed on a Monday
morning, dons his golf attire and proceeds to walk all over the opposition.
It doesn’t seem to matter which golf course he is playing or who the
opposition is - he always wins. He has certainly had quite a run and the
rest of us can only stand back and admire his consistency and cool head.
At Pattavia on Monday Charlie Cox was at it again. He only needed 35 points
to see off all the other contenders. It took a count back to determine who
was second and Liam Horgan and his constant companion ecig (electric
cigarette) saw off Roger Wilkinson and his real cig.
1st Charlie Cox (15) 35pts
2nd Liam Horgan (14) 33pts
3rd Roger Wilkinson (12) 33pts
Wednesday, August 13, Laem Chabang - Stableford
On Wednesday the TRGG went upmarket and set off for Laem Chabang
where a watery grave awaits the unsuspecting golfer. Poor old Bob Cannon
should have packed his diving gear as by the end of the round he had to
completely re-stock with new golf balls.
Nino Dinardo however flew round without a problem and finished well in the
lead with 40 points. ‘Mr Banana-man’ Tim Dalton (he hits every shot with a
fade, or should that be a slice) came in second on 37 and Richard Talbot
took third spot playing to his handicap.
1st Nino Dinardo (16) 40pts
2nd Tim Dalton (19) 37pts
3rd Richard Talbot (16) 36pts
Friday, August 15, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
Friday saw the TRGG head back to Mountain Shadow to round off the
week. We are now thinking of renaming it Mod Shadow after the only lady in
the field, Mod Chaviraksa, overshadowed all the men, and not by a little but
by about three streets, she decimated everybody.
1st Mod Chaviraksa (12) 41pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (13) 33pts
3rd Kazimi Narahara (12) 32pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to
play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on
0860567019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to
the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Player puts on a show at Plutaluang
PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar
John Aylott, Mick Thomas &
Owen Walkley.
Monday, August 11, Crystal Bay -
Stableford
With just a couple of groups playing at Crystal Bay, due to
players thinking holiday rates and the course being full, we had a four and
a half hour round, which isn’t too bad.
The locker rooms are being renovated here and are looking great but I think
some money spent on the greens would be better placed. This course is a
favourite within this group as some of the members have had their best games
here but the greens are practically impossible to putt on.
Rosco Langoulant was the winner on the day with a great 38 points ahead of
Owen Walkley in second with 37. Third place went to Craig Wheeler with 36
points on a count back over Mal Farquharson, playing his best round for a
long time.
Wednesday, August 13, Green Valley - Stableford
Green valley today and the course as usual was in grand
condition, although the greens had some quirky little breaks and if you were
above the hole it was quite tricky to get the ball close and make it stop.
Brian Maddox & John Player
We had a John Daly lookalike out with us and he actually
walked the course, his first time walking in a long, long time but the bet
back at the bar was that if he lost 16 kilos in the next 8 weeks Steve will
give him a considerable amount of money for his new wardrobe.
We didn’t have a big field but what we had certainly enjoyed themselves. The
scores were very consistent with 35 points being enough for third and fourth
places, Jim Grieve taking the higher rung on the ladder on count back over
John Aylott. Mick Thomas came in second with a fine 36 points, but with a 4
for four points on the 18th hole Gus George took the top spot with 37.
There was only one ‘2’ today, coming from Sel Wegner on the 16th and we all
heard the shout from the green!
Friday, August 15, Plutaluang - Stableford
Playing the Navy East and South we found the course in good
condition but everyone was commenting on how low the lake is. The water is
so low that you can walk in and hit a golf ball from about 20 yards from
where it would normally be under water. In actual fact one of our group
played his second shot from there, after much cajoling taking off his shoes
and socks and proceeding to play bare foot, albeit up to his ankles in mud.
Tiger Woods couldn’t have done better.
In third place today was Brian Maddox with a fine 34 points, being beaten on
a count back by Brett Pennington. First place went to John Player with a
whopping 40 points, now that is a score on this course without doubt. There
was only one ‘2’, coming from Tony Baker from about 25 yards off the green,
a really great chip and it never looked like missing.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road
looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if
you are looking for a game.

Robbins edges the win at Mountain Shadow
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Raleigh Gosney enjoys a successful start
to his annual leave.
Monday, August 11, Mt. Shadow – Stableford
Yet another holiday today, and our group of 17 golfers
arrived at the Mountain Shadow course to find the car park almost
completely full. The management’s policy here of charging normal
weekday prices on public holidays is certainly paying off for them,
and it can only be hoped that other courses see the light and follow
their lead.
We were able to tee off only a few minutes later than our scheduled
time in bright sunny conditions, but the lack of rain recently is
beginning to show it’s effects, with the lakes down at a very low
level and the fairways dry and hard.
The pace of play was slow due to the crowded course, and a far cry
from recent competitions when we’ve played on courses which were
virtually empty. One annoying thing here is that the starter
regularly allows groups to squeeze in on the 10th tee, between
groups which have already completed nine holes, and this happened
again today and is guaranteed to further slow down the pace of play
on the inward nine.
Tony Robbins continued his run of steady form to take first place on
a count back ahead of newcomer Arne Jorgenson, with Mashi Kaneta
taking third place. Ken Young completed the podium positions,
beating the unlucky Gerry Cooney also on a count back.
We welcomed back Raleigh Gosney at the start of his annual leave,
and he duly made his presence felt by taking a near pin prize (and
missing a four foot putt for birdie) but then making amends on the
next par three by sinking an enormous putt for the ‘2’.
1st Tony Robbins (13) 35pts
2nd Arne Jorgenson (10) 35pts
3rd Mashi Kaneta (13) 32pts
4th Ken Young (26) 30pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Mashi Kaneta, Raleigh Gosney and Steve
Durey.
Wednesday, August 13, Green Valley – Stableford
Our scheduled tee time today was 30 minutes later than
normal at 11.30 a.m., but when we arrived on the tee at 10.45 a.m.
there was no one in sight, and we were able to get away immediately.
The weather was bright and sunny with a light breeze keeping the
temperature reasonable, and the course was once again in good shape,
so everything was in place for another great day’s golf.
Our three groups teed off on the difficult opening hole (surely the
rearranged course layout is a step backwards) and the round
progressed smoothly without any holdups, getting everyone back in
the clubhouse in around four hours.
Surprisingly given the conditions, the scores were moderate with the
majority of the scores between 30 and 32 points, and only Raleigh
Gosney came close to playing to his handicap with 35 points to take
first place. Tony Robbins and Steve Durey both came home with 32
points, with Tony taking second place on the count back.
Geoff Parker and Peter Habgood were playing in the same group and
Geoff hit a near perfect tee shot on the par three 13th hole which
bounced twice on the green before clipping the pin and coming to
rest four feet from the hole. Peter then followed up by skimming his
tee shot all along the fairway and up onto the green coming to rest
six inches inside Geoff’s ball to take the near pin prize!
1st Raleigh Gosney (17) 35pts
2nd Tony Robbins (13) 32pts
3rd Steve Durey (20) 32pts
Near Pins: Peter Habgood and Arne Jorgenson (2).
Friday, August 15, Pattavia – Stableford
Just three groups of golfers set off for the journey to
Pattavia under threatening skies, and the rain duly arrived as we
reached the 7 motorway. However, when we arrived at the course
there’d been no rain and conditions were once again almost perfect,
if a little humid.
Registration was completed efficiently and it must be said that the
combined price of 850 baht for green fee and caddy represents
probably the best value for money golf in the Pattaya area at the
moment.
The course continues to improve with each visit, although the greens
as always were grainy and tricky to read. We did experience a ten
minute shower of rain as the final group reached the ninth hole, but
it moved away quickly and barely affected the course or the greens.
Mashi Kaneta produced the best performance of the day to comfortably
take the top place, three points clear of Les Burns who made a very
rare (but very welcome) visit to the podium in second place. Raleigh
Gosney continued his good form to take third place despite a near
disastrous blob on the eighteenth hole.
After the game we enjoyed a snack in the new clubhouse restaurant
where the owners are providing Chang Export beer at 55 baht (small)
and 80 baht (large) which is almost half the price charged at some
of the courses in the area – certainly a good value for money day
all round.
1st Mashi Kaneta (13) 38pts
2nd Les Burns (32) 35pts
3rd Raleigh Gosney (17) 33pts
Near Pins: Ken Young, Lee Butler and Mashi Kaneta.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who
now play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the
fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and
a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join
us. We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation,
and new players are always welcome.

Slick greens hit the scores at Navy
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Rod Howett, Bruce Gardner and Bob Poole.
Monday, August 11, Plutaluang – Stableford
We started out today on the North course with the West to
follow. There were six groups with the equal split in the two divisions
coming at 9-17 in division 1 and 18+ in division 2.
The best score of the day was returned in the top division with Harry
Vincenzi winning with 35 points. Chris Voller came in second, one point
behind Harry and Tony Bless took third with 33.
Bruce Gardner topped division 2 with 33 points ahead of Alan Bissell in
second place with just 29. Bob Poole is even happier than Alan after
taking third place with 27, beating Chris Reed and Miss Nut on a
18/12/10 back nine count back.
The greens here today were so slick, probably the fastest we have ever
experienced on these two courses in all of the years we have playing
here.
Near pins went to Tony Bless, Don Head, Ted Lodge, Barney Sheedy, Eiichi
Matsumoto, Bob Poole and Bryan Rought (2).
Barney Sheedy and Harry Vincenzi both birdied the 6th on the North
course to split the top division ‘2’s pot while in division 2 Eiichi and
Gary Harrison also shared the spoils.
Wednesday, August 13, Laem Chabang - Stableford
Our first visit back here for some considerable time and as
we drove up to the clubhouse the course looked in immaculate condition.
We were playing the C and A nines with six groups out and the equal cut
made at 5-16 and 17+.
It was very busy here today with a society just in front of us and two
following behind, but we teed off bang on time. It was a tough test out
there for everyone and this is reflected in the scores coming in.
Steve Richardson won division 1 with 35 points, one ahead of Chris
Voller in second and Martin Grimoldby took third on 33.
Paul Hartley captured division 2 honours with 35 points as well, while
Mark Armstrong was second on 33 and David Phillips is third with 32.
Dannie Larson birdied C8 for the only ‘2’ in division 1 while a rollover
ensued to Pattaya C.C in division 2.
Near were shared among Kevin Blake, Martin Grimoldby, Chris Voller, Paul
Hartley and Dannie Larson.
Friday, August 15, Eastern Star - Stableford
There were 29 names down so two divisions out again today,
with an identical cut as Wednesday’s.
Playing off 28 for the last time, Rodney Howett won division 2 with 38
points, while Chris Reed came in second with 36 and Iain Walsh took,
third beating Frank Kelly 20/18 on the back nine after they both came in
with 33 points each.
An even-par 36 points was enough to secure division 1 bragging rights
for Wilf Latham, with Ted Lodge coming second place one point behind and
Mikael Andersson third on 34.
Ted Lodge birdied the 17th to take a rollover ‘2’s pot in division 1 and
become a happy chappy while there were none in division 2.
Near pins went to Jeff Cargill, Ted Lodge, Lindsay Phillips, Bryan
Rought, Rod Howett, Frank Kelly and Wilf Latham.

Barry puts the boot in
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Barry Copestake (center) and Ian Wilson
(right) with Colin Davis.
Sunday, August 10, Green Valley -
Monthly Medal
A Flight
1st Barry Copestake (13) net 67
2nd John Pierrel (10) net 69
3rd Peter LeNoury (11) net 70
B Flight
1st Ian Wilson (20) net 70
2nd Peter Terry (20) net 74
3rd Colin Davis (17) net 75
Near Pins: No5 Jim Bell, No8 Colin Sansom, No12 Paul V Smith, No16 Ian
Wilson
It was a fine day for Barry ‘the boot Copestake’ as he etched his name
on the 2014 wall of shame for his second monthly medal on the trot with
an A Flight and man of the match winning net 67. One can only muse over
how resplendent our sartorial wonder will be when he “suits up” for the
year-end gold medal competition.
Barry also took home the lead crystal etched whiskey goblet and a bottle
of Jameson’s Irish whiskey. His fine effort held the consistent John
Pierrel (with his steady net 69) at bay and relegated him to the silver.
Peter ‘the right honorable’ LeNoury tided up the flight with a net 70.
In B Flight, visiting Ian Wilson showed he could adapt to new territory
by notching a fine net 70. Peter Terry meanwhile penciled one less digit
than the Donkey to sort out the silver and bronze.
If not the round of the day at least the shot of the day belonged to
Aussie Colin Sansom who hit the flagstick with his second shot on the
10th par five, leaving him a tap in birdie and he was over the moon but
sadly not for long as he had a treble bogey on the 11th and a double on
the 12th.
Barry Copestake, Paul V Smith and Colin Davis shared the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, August 12, Greenwood C & A - Stableford
1st Eddy Beilby (15) 39pts
2nd Nick Shaw (17) 38pts
3rd Ian Wilson (21) 38pts
A relatively modest group, attributable to the low season and the
Queen’s birthday, took on the always improving Greenwood. Eddy ‘the
Eagle’ Beilby posted a sparkling 39 points for the man of the match and
he was followed up the podium steps by old friends Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw and
the man on form, Ian Wilson. The order of the latter two was determined
by count back as they were locked on very creditable 38 point returns.
Ian Wilson was the sole heir to the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, August 13, Burapha C & D - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Rogers (11) 40pts
2nd Nick Shaw (17) 38pts
3rd John Pierrel (10) 38pts
B Flight
1st Ian Wilson (21) 43pts
2nd Jim Reid (25) 33pts
3rd Barry Oats (20) 33pts
The red hot Ian Wilson was the top man in B Flight as his 42 points held
off the non-threatening pair of Jim Reid and Barry Oats by ten clear
strokes. Jim showed no defense to age as he happily took the count back
from one of the nicest fellows you’ll meet. Barry had no complaints
though as he was happy to snag anything with 33 points.
A Flight had its own 40-pointer in Aussie star Kevin Rogers while
another mêlée shaped up for the second and third slots as Jim I’m
‘getting better’ Reid and Barry Oats locked it up with 38 points apiece.
Ah, but the luck was there as Jim swept up the silver leaving the
unlucky Barry with the bronze.
Nick Shaw was on song with his irons as he was the sole heir to a very
wealthy ‘2’s pot.
Friday, August 15, Pattavia - Stableford
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (14) 36pts
2nd Kevin Rogers (11) 35pts
3rd Paul Bray (6) 34pts
B Flight
1st Colin Davis (17) 46pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (15) 36pts
3rd Bernard Green (28) 34pts
Had it not been for the monthly medal this week perhaps headlines would
have been ‘the Donkey kicks ass.’ The Donkey shot a lifetime best ever
46 points for a net 77 gross that was a massive 10 strokes clear of B
Flight mate Eddy ‘the Eagle Beilby and a further two ahead of Bernard
Green. Colin may well have turned the corner, let’s hope so because his
new handicap will demand it.
Freddy ‘the quiet one’ Starbeck was the top boy in A Flight with a
steady even par round. Freddy was followed into the barn by a pair of
Aussie’s, Kevin Rogers and Paul Bray, and they were strung out in one
shot increments and in that order.
Back at Lewinski’s Colin was asked to celebrate his best ever round by
ringing the bell. After careful consideration and noting that there were
only three people in the bar he graciously did just that.
John Pierrel. Jim Brackett, Colin Davis, Rod Brown and Peter Walker
shared the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd
Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in
and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport
is provided.
