Eleven landlubbers from Garden International School
recently attended a weeklong introduction to sailing at the Vichitra Thani
Sailing Club, Bang Na. The students were accompanied by staff members Sue
Burke, Nessie McIntyre and Jonah Vieuxchamp, a member of the Swiss Navy
Aquatic Display Team.
In beautiful surroundings on the lakeshore, the
students were first of all shown the ropes by the instructors from the
Thai National Sailing Team and were then launched onto the lake. Many an
hour was spent tacking, jibing and splicing the main brace with the
occasional capsize as well.
At the end of the week all of the students took part in
a GIS regatta where the results repeated those of the Americas Cup. Kiwi
Craig Whitakker won the Laser class and fellow New Zealander Dini
Paranagama triumphed in the Optimists. Unfortunately, the American entry,
piloted by Pat Markovich, a member of the Montana Ocean Yacht Club, sank
without trace.
The week was such a success that GIS hopes to return next year.
The annual Jesters MC Children’s Fair and Family Day
will be held on Saturday 16th September in the grounds of the Amari Orchid
Resort in Pattaya. This fun event is a major part of the fund raising
project run by the Jesters in support of the Fountain of Life, one of the
most deserving and constructive charities in the resort city.
The
tug-o-war was an event to remember!
Last year, the Jesters managed to raise over 1 million
baht to assist the Good Shepherd Sisters of Thailand run the Fountain of
Life Day Center for underprivileged children in Pattaya. These children,
aged between 3 and 15 years of age are the casualties of life in our
society. They are unable to attend school, many having no identification
papers or a family so poor that education is beyond their meagre resources.
Some children have no family and others have never known what it is like to
have a real home.
Each weekday, the staff collects up to 200 children from
around the city and takes them to the center where they receive a good basic
education and a square meal, possibly their only meal of the day.
Last
year the Clown was one of the favorite attractions with the children
Last year, it was decided by the organising committee
that to help kids, they should involve kids. From that concept, the
Children’s Fair and Family Day became one of the linchpins of the “Care
4 Kids Charity Drive”.
As in last year, the Chonburi Siam Steel Mills Services
have come forward again as the Platinum sponsor to back the organisation of
this charity fair. And what a Fair is promised! From bouncy castles, art
contests, clowns, balloons, raffles with children’s prizes, puppet shows,
tug-o-war, fun children’s activities, live music and even beer tents for
Dad - this is Pattaya’s Family Fun Day - helping those less fortunate
families with needy children.
If you are unable to attend on the 16th of September,
donations can be made out to the Fountain of Life Center (Care 4 Kids). More
information can be obtained from Paul Baker (038) 768 400 ext 159, email

Teachers and students
join monthly beach clean-up
Local teachers and students joined the mayor, selected
officials and hundreds of concerned residents on the morning of 2 August
to collect trash along a six-kilometer stretch of Pattaya Beach.
Local
teachers and students help clean up Pattaya Beach.
The activity has turned into a routine effort requiring
repeated attention due to the irresponsible acts that continue to pollute
the area waters and deter tourism to Pattaya. The effort is admirable and
certainly will inspire students to appreciate the importance of
environmental preservation.
Mayor Pairat Suttithamrongsawat led by example, and was
accompanied by a team of city officials that included officials from the
environmental and sanitation departments.
Christmas in July
certainly paid off for the Pattaya Street Kids Centre
Michael and Tanida Bick from the ‘After That’ Bar
on Soi 7 donated the charity funds raised from the Street Kids Benefit
party held last month, to the Jomtien-Pattaya Rotary Club.
President
of the Jomtien-Pattaya Rotary Club Erika Keller accepts the donation from
Tanida (Toy) and Michael Bick of the After That Bar.
The Rotary Club President, Erika Keller, accepted the
cash donation of 44,485 baht, which will go to towards the Rotary Project
at the Street Kids Home. This brought the total amount raised by the novel
event, including donated food and toys, to 79,485 baht.
The donated funds will be put towards the purchase of
much needed items such as clothing, bedding and personal hygiene items for
these children.
Considering that the Xmas in July event was staged
during the low tourist season, the organisers were delighted by the
response from the local community. Planning is underway for the next
project.
