Lock up your sister - Lewiinski’s
& Haven tie
PSC TAGGS... golf from The Haven
Monday, August 21 - Khao Kheow Country Club (Team Match
Play)
Frank Howard, the legendary American football coach at
Clemson University, used to say that a tie was like kissing your sister.
It is not totally without pleasure, but you better not enjoy it too much.
The Alternative Gentlemen’s Golf Society (TAGGS)
played the Lewiinski’s/Orchid Golf Society in a re-match of the golf
challenge they played on the 17th of July at Green Valley. In that first
meeting, Lewiinski’s beat the gentlemen from The Haven by a score of
nine to seven. This time around the match was played at Khao Kheow and
ended in a draw, seven to seven. But if a tie is like kissing your sister,
the denizens from The Haven had a prettier sister. They seemed to enjoy it
a little more.
Wednesday, August 23 - Bangpra International Golf Club
(Two Man Scramble)
1st: Steve Donovan & Rick Sharp, 66.8 net C/B
2nd: Dave Ball & Dan Dyke, 66.8
3rd: Mark Campbell & Harry Riley, 68.8
Lock up the women and children! Big bad Steve Donovan
and Rick “The Ripper” Sharp raided The Haven and ran off with all the
loot. The two Lewiinski’s regulars played the TAGGS Two Man Scramble at
Bangpra on Wednesday, August 23, and took home the first place trophies
with net score of 66.8. These Yanks started slowly, making a bogey on the
first hole. They then reeled off sixteen pars and one birdie to finish
with a 72 off the stick.
Second place went to the dynamic duo of Dave Ball and
Dan Dyke. They shot a scratch 74, but their slightly higher handicaps
landed them in a count back with Steve and Rick. Third place went to Mark
Campbell and Harry Riley who shot a 68.6 net.
Friday, August 25 - Plutaluang Royal Thai Navy Golf
Course (Bogey)
1st: Jeff McLaury, 1 Up
2nd: Neville Seward, 1 Down
3rd: Mark Campbell, 2 Down C/B
4th: Stephen Beard, 2 Down
American Jeff McLaury was the only winner in a TAGGS
Bogey competition down at Sattahip. Playing off 12, Jeff managed to beat
the North/West combo with a score of one up.
Bogey has become the preferred format for the gentlemen
from The Haven. It helps the higher handicappers because the worst that
can happen is a lost hole. It helps the lower handicappers because it
keeps the scores down. There are no four point or five point holes as
there are in Stableford.
Neville Seward finished second at one down to the
course. Mark Campbell and Stephen Beard, who both came in at two down,
followed Neville.
Charity Marathon scheduled for November
Pattaya City is organizing a quarter marathon and a
half marathon on 5 November to raise funds in support of education and
AIDS prevention programs. Trophies in the name of HRH Princess Soamsawali
will be awarded to the winners.
City planners, government officials and the TAT Region
3 Office are organizing the marathon. They hope to promote Pattaya and
adjust the city’s image by increasing tourism and at the same time
promote sport as an alternative to drugs.
In addition to the 21.1K half marathon and the 10.55K
quarter marathon there will be a 3K walk-run marathon for age groups
between 15 to 60.

Pattaya Panthers Rugby
After a lightning tour of outback Australia to take the
Wallabies to a pre Bledisloe cup and Tri-nations championship (see picture
of training ground), Pattaya’s premier (and only) rugby side - the
Panthers - will be launching a new season of rugby on Sunday 3rd September
with a trial and training session at the International School of the Regents
starting at 4 p.m.
The
rugby team would like to invite all returning, new players and interested
parties to attend.
The Panthers are a social side who play about once a
month either here in Pattaya or in Bangkok. After just 2 seasons we have
hosted an International 10’s tournament, and been on many memorable tours.
The Panthers won the Pattaya 10’s, were runners-up at the Phuket 10’s
and semi-finalists (twice) at the Bangkok 10’s. We have a number of up and
coming fixtures between now and December.

Saturday and Sunday, September 2 & 3 off the Royal Varuna Yacht Club.
All members of the RVYC and their invited guests, and all

Multihulls the Hobies will race as a separate class provided there are a
minimum of 5 boats. The minimum for the Open class is 3 boats.
Briefings will be held at 13:00 on Saturday and 10:00 on
Sunday. Races begin at 14:00 on Saturday and 11:00 on Sunday.
On 2 September two back-to-back races around the buoys
will be run. On 3 September a medium or long distance race will be held,
depending on wind and tide. Time Limit is 80 minutes for the buoy races, 15
minutes between first and last boat; for the race on Sunday, the time limit
will be announced. The scoring will be tallied using the low point scoring
system.
Prizes will be awarded for each class, 1 prize for every
5 boats, counted as the average per race.
Lewiinski’s breaks into the lead
Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowing League
Lewiinski’s made a clean sweep and now stands alone
in first place by defeating Cafe Ole 4 to 0. Cafe Ole drops into a tie for
second with TQ 1 Bob, who won 3 points while losing only one against a
tough Snowman team. The upcoming VFW Post 9876 team defeated House of the
Golden Coin 4 to 0, moving up to a tie for third.
Once again the Pattaya Bowl beat up on the bowlers and
only Fritz, Captain of the VFW team, managed a credible 530 series. He
also had the high game of the day with a 193-pin count.

one of the closest seasons ever.
In week 6 matches, Cheers defeated Rising Sun to move
up into a tie for first. Pleasure Dome won match and beer over Palmer’s
to gain their share of the lead. Yorkie, meanwhile, lost the match to Beer
Put to allow the others to catch them at the top of the table. Mick’s
Place won match and beer over Devonshire to add their name to the list of
second place teams.
Ian from Yorkie holds the league lead in highest out,
138.
This week (Sept 1) sees Cheers v Beer Put, Palmer’s v

Fitness Tips: H2O and Tai
Chi studies
by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club
G’day Pattaya,
With the Jesters Fountain of Life Children’s Fair
coming up and one of the big parts of the day being the mountain bike race
I thought that this bit of research might be interesting. If memory serves
me correctly, both the winner and runner up from last year’s ride,
Cameron McMaster and Ralf Clim, consecutively, crossed the finish line
wearing a back mounted water bottle. The other advantage they had over the
field was that they ride really fast.
Rehydration for Mountain Cyclists
Title: Fluid replacement
during mountain bike races in the heat - rack mounted Vs back mounted
rehydration
Authors: JM McClung et al. (Berry College, Georgia,
USA)
Discussion: One of the newer forms of rehydration
for mountain bikers is referred to as back mounted hydration. This method
incorporates a water bottle situated in a pouch located on the rider’s
lumbar area. The bottle incorporates an extended tube running from the
bottle up the back and over a selected shoulder. To rehydrate, the rider
simply turns their head to the side and uses the extended bite valve to
attain fluid. Twelve experienced mountain bike riders completed a 48 km
time trial on three separate occasions: no water; rack mounted (RM); and
back mounted (BM). The riders stopped every 16 km for eight minutes,
during which time fluids were topped up and data was collected.
Results: There was no difference in the amount of
fluid consumed between the two methods (RM consumed 2.2 liters, BM
consumed 2.5 liters); however, the BM was less dehydrated (2.61%) as
compared to the RM (2.99%). There were no differences between the RM and
RM trials with regards to lactate produced, rectal temperature, sweat
rate, or heart rates.
Pros: good to see that research is being conducted
into new rehydration techniques.
Cons: mountain bike riding requires concentration
and focus so the effectiveness of back mounted hydration will probably
depend on how easy it is to use, i.e., there is a possibility that
locating the tube for rehydration may distract the cyclist’s attention
from the road/mountain. The study also did not explain how the back
mounted system resulted in a six minute improvement in performance.
Competitive mountain bike riders and cyclists should
look for further information on back mounted rehydration.
Tai Chi benefits
Tai Chi is becoming the ‘in’ exercise around
Pattaya, so with that in mind it was nice to come across a reasonable bit
of research.
Title: Comparison of flexibility and heart rate
responses between Tai Chi practitioners and non-practitioners
Authors: Dr Youlian Hong. The Chinese University,
Hong Kong
Discussion: Dr Hong investigated the effectiveness
of classical Tai Chi Chun exercise on aerobic fitness and flexibility in
50 older males (average age of 68 years). Fifty percent regularly
practiced Thai Chi over the past 13 years, while the offer half were
sedentary. All subjects lived in the same community and led normally
active lifestyles. Participants were tested in the sit and reach
flexibility test, resting heart rate, heart rate in a three minute step
test, and total body rotation (left and right).
Results: Dr Hong found that the Tai Chi group had
better resting heart rates (69 bpm Vs 76 bpm), better 3-minute step test
heart rate results (90 bpm Vs 130 bpm), better sit and reach results (39
cm Vs 30 cm) and better total body rotation results for both the right (47
cm Vs 30 cm) and left (48 cm Vs 29 cm). Dr Hong then compared the results
of his Tai Chi practitioners to the American Fitness Standards and found
the individuals regularly practicing Tai Chi ranked in the top 10
percentile for sit and reach and total body rotation.
Pros: it is interesting to see that the benefits of
regular Tai Chi are not limited to flexibility, as is so often reported.
Cons: given the changes found in resting and
exercise heart rates, it would have been very useful if Dr Hong had also
measured the heart rates attained while practicing Tai Chi, and any
changes in resting blood pressure or cholesterol levels. It would also
have been interesting to know the effectiveness in older females.
Carpe’ Diem
Tippy’s wins again
Tippy’s will once again be crowned champions of the
Friday Premier Darts League. Tippy’s finished the season with 12 wins
without a loss and has won the league a record 7 straight times.
The “steady” Bunker finished second, which,
according to Pook, is “the best Mr. Loy can do.”
“Not too bad, Mr. Loy,” he said, “Try harder next
season.”
Middy and crew from SGP won the wooden spoon again for
being the league’s “strongest” team.
Nung from Mango scored the league’s highest out of
the season, 120.
Seven players managed top 180 scores: Steve Rose
(twice) from the Bunker, Dennis (twice) from Lazi Pig, Klang from Thistle,
Nang and Nee from SGP, Pook from Tippy’s and Nui from Mango.
The awards presentation night takes place Friday,
September 1st at the Bunker. Lucky Draw is at 8:30 p.m.; draw starts at
8:45. Entry fee 50 baht. Dartboard from last season can be picked up at
the party.

Mr. Loy tames new course
Pattaya Golf Society from The Bunker
On Tuesday 22nd August, 23 golfers from the Bunker went
to the Navy course at Sattahip. Because of the changes to the course
everybody played a medal competition. The two courses played were the much
changed south course and the north course.
Roy Mitchell won the competition with a 5 under par 67;
this was very commendable as the south course has been completely
redesigned. Norman Brooks finished second with 3 under par 69 and in third
place came Mike Larsen with 75.
Nearest the pins this week were Peter Allcorn, Paul
Butler, Gordon McKnight and Wilf Latham.
Delaney’s Drive-In Their Friendly Golf
Society
Delaney’s Friendly Golf Society drove-off for its
inaugural Two Man Scramble competition on Tuesday 22nd August at Eastern
Star, designated to be Delaney’s ‘Home Course’.
Transport was available for those that needed it,
leaving Delaney’s at 10.00 a.m. for an 11.00 a.m. start.
Eastern Star was in great shape and, in a strong wind,
presented the usual challenge.
Thirty two of the forty or so signed-up members played,
with the winning score coming from the two newest members, Eddie Blackwell
and Urai Khongnok, scrambling the best score of the day - a net 67.6.
Runners-up were Paul and young Alex Hartley close
behind with a net 69.2. Third and fourth team places went to Russell Finch
and Bill Thompson, and Dene Mundy and Jim Montgomery returning net 70.2
and 71.2 respectively.
Near pins were claimed by Urai Khongnok, clearly
showing good form, and Jim Montgomery. Long putts were sunk by Kevin Fortt
and Banjob Franklin. The prize-giving took place at Eastern Star and then
it was back to Delaney’s for Pasta Night. All up, a very friendly
inaugural outing.
To join Delaney’s very Friendly Golf Society, just
see Kim or his secretary Khun Aum at Delaney’s for a registration form.
You only need two photos for your member card - there is no joining fee.
The competitions will be fortnightly with the format
alternating between ‘Better Ball’ and ‘Two Man Scramble’. The next
outing to Eastern Star is on September 5th playing Two Man Better Ball.
Sign-up as a Team at Delaney’s. Competition entry fee is B.150 for
members and B.200 for non-members.
‘Delaney’s Friendly Golf Society’ Member Card
qualifies for discounts at Delaney’s in Pattaya, giving 15% off food and
10% off drinks, including happy hour.
In addition, members joining between now and the end of
October will receive a Free Breakfast voucher for the competition days
they play in, right up to October 31st. The full Irish Breakfast ( and it
really is a full one) is available from 09.00 am daily. Make Tuesday a
Delaney’s Day.
John Kendall bows out in style
PSC Golf from Lewiinski’s
John Kendall, who was leaving the kingdom on Saturday
the 26th of August, played his last game for a while with Lewiinski’s on
Friday the 25th at Green Valley C.C. and it looks like he saved his best
till last, scoring an excellent gross 83 net 65 to easily take B flight.
As normal with beer in hand, he said, “That was my career best.” He
also said he would return in about one month, but when he does he can look
forward to playing off a much lower handicap.

Golf News
from Mike Franklin
I was talking last week to Kuhn Michael Mesommont,
General Manager at Natural Park Resort, and he tells me that there are
still a few of the five-day Privilege Card Annual Memberships available at
B.5,900.
This Ronald Fream designed course, a beautiful 27 hole
layout and one of the best in the region, is always beautifully maintained
and a real pleasure to play. So this offer at 5,900 baht is very good
value for both resident and long stay golfers.
The sister course at Natural Park Hill, which had a
similar five day membership offer, is already sold out, largely due to a
rush by the Scandinavian community, eager to play this tough course as
often as possible in order to get their handicaps down.
When you consider a keen player like Hannu Kemila, who
has come down from a 23 handicap to 7 in just 18 months, and Ossi
Viljainen working just as hard and currently at 10 handicap, you know what
I am saying. These are serious competitive golfers and very good for the
game. Keep it up guys, and especially you, Ossi.
Having said that, memberships at Natural Park Resort are
still available, but don’t leave it too long.
Canadian Jack-a-Lope Open - Friday 8 th
September
With just a few days to go to the second Canadian
Jack-a-Lope Open at Eastern Star Resort, on Friday September 8 th
here is a reminder once again of the charities that
will benefit this year: The El Shaddai Children’s Home and the
Banglamung Home for Disabled Ladies.
There are numerous prize categories in the tournament,
and these are shown on the entry form, available at all the venues and the
Pattaya Mail. The prizes themselves, in the tournament and lucky
draw, are well worth winning. For example – two One Year Memberships for
Eastern Star, one in the lucky draw and the other for the lowest gross
score on the day. A Family Weekend in a bungalow at the resort with full
use of the facilities, including golf, tennis, swimming and the fitness
center, plus many more valuable prizes.
The shotgun start has been put back to 10.00 a.m. and
tournament entries will be limited to 128 players.
Sign-up for the Jack-a-Lope quickly, and let’s hope
for good representation from all of the golf venues. The event, after all,
is in aid of children and adults who are far worse off than we are.
A new major tournament takes place on Wednesday 22 nd
September at Natural Park Resort. It is the Thai-Ger Line 2nd
Anniversary golf tournament, organized by Carl-Fabian Arp of Thai-Ger Line
Golf, in Soi Chaiyapool.
Entry is 1,250 baht, which includes green and caddy
fee, transport, trophies and technical prizes, lucky draw and a huge Thai
& Bavarian buffet and party at the Bavaria German Restaurant (leather
shorts optional). This promises to be a very good day out, and a terrific
party with soft drinks and beer free all night.
Fabian is also promoting soft spikes at Thai-Ger Line,
given that metal spikes will not be allowed on the courses after November
1 st. So why not get used to
them now – it is only two months before the rule comes into force!
Full details, as always, at the PSC venues, in
Delaney’s, in Pattaya Mail and on the PSC web page.
Finally, another reminder of that important item of
news from the Member clubs of the Eastern Seaboard Association of golf
courses… From November 1 st,
just two months away, metal spiked shoes will not be allowed on any of the
member courses. Soft spikes will be compulsory. Most of the shops have
them in stock in thread sizes to fit the different shoe brands.
Back in a couple of weeks with a ‘golf news’ update
– in the meantime, play well!
