Fun on the agenda for Bjarne’s
Birthday Charity Scramble 2000
Fun was the primary aim of the organisers of Bjarne’s
Birthday Charity Scramble, held at Siam Country Club on Nov. 6 to
celebrate the birthday of Mine Host of the Cafe Kronborg - Bjarne Nielsen.
A
fun day out for everyone and a happy birthday indeed for Bjarne Nielsen
(center) shown awarding the winning team
Ninety-four golfers turned out to make this a memorable
occasion. Right from registration, where the contestants were greeted by
the smiling face of Bill (Tiny) Davis, until the final Heineken was
emptied at Cafe Kronborg much later - fun was the order of the day.
Tiny’s smile seemed to be infectious as even his
assistant, that dour Scot Willie Mercer was observed to smile on a number
of occasions.
The format for the day was Danish Scramble with 4
players per team. The differences to the norm came with a number of
novelty holes included.
The first of these was the ‘How do they do that’
hole where right handed golfers were supplied with a left handed club with
which to drive off, and the left handed had to make do with a right handed
club. The percentage of air shots was very high and rules were relaxed to
accommodate these. The distances and accuracy achieved were pitiful, with
one exception - Mats Song who won the A division with a 200 yard drive. He
must be ambidextrous.
A number of holes that followed were played in the
normal manner until the golfers encountered the ‘Bridgestone Bounce’.
This test required the golfer to balance himself on a car tyre (minus tube
and wheel) to affect their tee shot. While this proved difficult for most,
a number of the golfers had an unfair advantage as the tyre offered little
resistance to their excess kilos! Delicacy and fear of facial damage
deters this scribe from naming those players!
Play proceeded traditionally to the final hole where
the last green presented the most difficult challenge. Awaiting the
players there was a putter designed by Heath Robinson after a serious bout
with a bottle of Mekong. Impossible to describe and even harder to use, it
resembled a normal putter as much as Michael O’Meara resembles Marilyn
Monroe!
Anyone who had taken this game seriously to this point
had to admit defeat and the object of the day was achieved. We had fun.
The journey back to the Kronborg was uneventful but
once there the fun continued. Bjarne and staff as usual supplied a
sumptuous array of food and the beverages were chilled to perfection.
Entertainment was supplied by a wandering bugler and by the trumpet
volunteer Joe Banks. For those who managed to take the game seriously
there was an award ceremony conducted by the affable ‘Tiny’ Davis.
Plenty of giveaways & lucky draw prizes meant that most players won
something.
To the organisers - a pat on the back. To Bjarne a big
thank you and a very happy birthday.

Charities are big winners in Pattaya’s
first 1/2 and 1/4 marathon
2,000 turn out for exrcise and fun
Chief Master Sergeant Pitak Padchun won Pattaya’s
first half-marathon on November 5 with a time of 1 hour 17 minutes and 7
seconds, but the real winners were the charities that benefited from the
fun day out.
Part of the proceeds collected from the event will go
to support HRH Princess Soamsawali’s project to reduce the number of
AIDS cases among expectant mothers, while another portion is designated to
support education in Pattaya.
Over 2,000 people turned out to compete for trophies
graciously conferred by HRH Princess Soamsawali. The event was divided
into three different lengths of running and or walking - a 21.1 km
half-marathon, a 10.55 km quarter marathon, and a 3 km fun-run.
Deputy Minister of Interior Sonthaya Khunpleum fired
the starter’s pistol to set the runners in motion from the starting
point on Beach Road near Soi 4.
When the races were over, Chief Master Sergeant Pitak
Padchun, a former runner from the national team, had won the men’s half
marathon, whilst Chanakan Changyao, also a former runner from the national
team, won the woman’s half marathon. Chanakan’s winning time in the
women’s half-marathon was 1 hour 53 minutes and 41 seconds.
Sergeant Komet Adsapan finished second in the men’s
half-marathon with a time of 1.17.35, followed by Watana Phachanla in
third with a time of 1.20.48.
Jiranan Jaidee finished second in the women’s half
marathon, followed by Saitong Matipikhai.
Prawit Jitrachinda won the men’s quarter-marathon
with a time of 39.04. Chatrachai Bunmimak came in second, followed by
Athikhom Anprasert.
Sayamol Phukmit won the women’s quarter marathon,
followed by Wibhada Srinanon and Jampee Raika.
In addition to the winners listed above, a number of
awards were also presented to winners in different categories, ranging
from young to old. Of particular note were two healthy senior residents, a
man 78 years old and a woman 73 years old. Awards were also presented to
members of the Running for Health Club and to participating schools
entering groups of students in the marathon.
The event was organized by the Pattaya Running for
Health Club, the National Athletic Association of Royal Patronage, the
city administration and the TAT Central Region 3 Office in Pattaya.
Organizers plan to make the event an annual happening and expect it to
grow with each year.
PH3 Run 878 - The Mystery Run
When that Chicken Fellow called the circle on arrival at
the A-site he reminded the hash that the last Mystery Run was number 771 in
December 1998. The identity of the mystery hares of the infamous mystery run
771 has never been discovered and as Sir Airhead was later to remind the
hash the consequences for them will be most dire should their identity ever
be discovered.
On the previous mystery run it was only Salvatore and
myself who made it back to the A-site before darkness. It was a great relief
therefore when during the initial circle called by the Grand Master Chicken
F the mystery hares returned from laying the run. The hares were none other
than the delightful Twiggy (the delightful hare) and the beautiful Sharon
Tate (the beautiful hare). The delightful hare told the hash the run was not
a long one, that it should be called the Pink Run and that there were no
problems apart “...from a few dogs and cattle.”
The run proved to be pleasurable and undemanding after
difficulties encountered in previous weeks and all hashers, those who did
the run that is, made it back to the A-site to enjoy beer and sandwiches
before the circle was called by the Grand Master.
The Grand Master iced, as is customary, both the
delightful and the beautiful hare along with Charlie Manson as a further
mystery hare. The circle was then given to the lovely and legendary Ewok the
raffle mistress to conduct the weekly raffle.
On completion of the raffle the circle was given to the
bad R.A. who dealt with much business: Teeny Weeny was iced for the usual
sort of thing, on this occasion circulating pornography. Airhead then got
onto his favourite subject, rule 6 and iced Chicken F, Yao Yao, Festering
Streaker and C Face for a story brought to his attention by C Face working
undercover in Soi Yodsak. The report from the honourable Agent C concerned
the observation of Harry the Katoy being given the prospect of a lift by
Chicken F and Yao Yao in Chicken F’s jeep. Airhead attempted to implicate
Agent C into this unhappy affair. C Face might be economical with the truth
but then he is an ardent disciple of the preaching’s of the egregious
Steamy Lump: “Never let the truth get in the way of a good story”.
The circle was returned to the Grand Master Chicken F to
complete the usual business. The hare’s song was performed on behalf of
the delightful hare and the beautiful hare by Sir Airhead; the hash hymn was
followed by a speedy return to Pattaya. Good food and ale was enjoyed at
Porky’s for which hashers extend their thanks to the new manager Kevin.
Let me conclude this sheet on a happy note and mention
our very own Boy George. Hashers should note Boy George will assume the role
of Grand Master in forthcoming weeks in order to give the esteemed Chicken F
a well-earned rest. As well as being GM in recent weeks in the absence of
General Kidney Wiper, Chicken F does a great deal of unseen work with the
beer truck each week and I am sure all members of the Monday hash will join
me in extending to Chicken F our very great appreciation for all the work he
does on our behalf.

Morten Jakobsen and Bob Garner take the
Commodore’s Cup
by Richard van den Heuvel
During the weekend of November 4 and 5, the annual
Royal Varuna Yacht Club Commodore’s Cup regatta was sailed successfully
on the waters off Pattaya. The wind has finally returned and a steady
northerly breeze of some 15 knots whisked the monohull and multihull
fleets around their respective courses.
On Saturday a long distance race around the islands and
permanent navigation buoys was sailed under ideal conditions, although for
some sailors the south mark appeared to be invisible! On Sunday, a more
traditional race ‘around the cans’ completed the competition for the
cup. A few capsizes, due to inexperience or gear failure in the strong
winds, added to the excitement.
In the monohull division it was Morten Jakobsen who
took first place in his Laser, followed by fleet captain Charlie Zbinden,
also in a Laser, while David Wales & Gilbert Leemann in their
Enterprise claimed third place.
In the multihull fleet Bob Garner and his crew came out
on top with his Nacra 17, followed by Alain Brancart and Judy Gardham in
their Hobie 16. Third place went to Peter Herning and his Nacra 16 sq.

Bangpra brings out the best of PSC
The second PSC Monthly Member’s Open was held
Thursday, November 9 at Bangpra Golf Course. This monthly event is proving
very popular with this month’s field limited to 104 and quite a few
disappointed golfers missing out. The message here is sign up early at the
PSC office Soi Diana Inn for next month.
Flight
winners of the PSC Monthly Member’s Open
This fine weather of recent days has dried out most
courses and Bangpra was no exception. The course was well presented and
gave the short knockers some help with a bit of extra run. But what the
golf gods give they can also take away; the balance was achieved with the
greens being very fast and several players putting themselves right out of
the competition.
Not everyone, though, had problems, as she scores
reflect. Of the 12 major prizewinners, only two failed to equal or better
their handicap. Some adjustments are certain in the near future.
Some of the individual efforts were worthy of mention,
no more so than Mam’s 44 points off her recently adjusted 27 handicap.
Mam was certainly not Trayling this time as her nearest rival in D flight
was 9 points adrift.
The other flights were much more keenly contested.
Magnus Johansson’s 38 points in A flight was one point better than any
other in his flight, with just one more point separating 2nd and 3rd.
B flight was even closer with Gerry Carpenter’s 39
points only one better than 2nd and 3rd, which was decided on count back.
The really close finish of the day, though, was “C”
flight where all three places were decided on count back. Gert Hansen’s
back nine was just that much better than his rivals and the 37 points got
him the winner’s trophy.
With Lumpy Russell absent it seemed the long drive
would be fairly open but the first alternate from the Russell family must
have almost snapped her girdle getting the job done; “A huge effort,
Noodle”.
As usual there were many novelties and quite a lot of
nice door prizes for those not skilled enough to feature in the prize
giving. Most of these were supplied by our generous supporters and again
we would urge our members to support these businesses. Diana Group,
Shenanigans, Rosie O’Gradys, Caf? Kronborg, Good Golf (Duck Square) and
our thanks also to ‘Papasan’ for his generosity.
Dennis Willett, Chairman of PSC Golf, conducted the
prize giving and took the opportunity to introduce himself and the golf
committee to members. Dennis noted the large percentage of players, many
with their partners, that stayed on after the event to make these games a
real social occasion. This is pleasing not only to the organizers but also
to the golf courses that play host for the day.
In closing the days procedures, Dennis reminded golfers
that the holiday season is almost with us and it would be wise to sign up
early for next month’s event to be held at Khao Kheow on the 6th or 8th
of December. Sign up as usual at the PSC office. The PSC golf committee
looks forward to seeing you there.

All at sea at Plutaluang
Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker
Friday November 3 saw twenty-five “Bunker Boys” go
to the newly designed and very confusing South and East nines at the Royal
Thai Navy course at Sattahip. The format was medal play for all players
and the new layout, without the standard yardage markers on the tees and
no handicapping system as yet, beat everyone - apart from Steve Rose.
Steve fired a remarkable 42 on the back nine to equal
the net par of 72. George Meigh, with 73, was the only other player to
achieve respectability.
The course proved to be too tough a test for all and
even steady Norman Brooks was seen to be shaking his head and talking to
himself later in the clubhouse - “What can you do?” - having fidgeted
his way to 106 gross! He was consoled by Peter “Dogleg” Allcorn who
shot 100 off his 11 handicap.
Nearest the pin prizes were cancelled as a Thai
six-ball group, who had interjected, picked all the markers up! A very
long day indeed.
Five way tie the closest ever
On Tuesday November 7, a huge turnout of Bunker Boys
travelled the short distance to Pattaya Country Club for a
medal/Stableford competition.
Forty players teed off not knowing how close the first
division would be. It is the first time that five players shared the same
score, 75.
The count back on the back nine saw Wilf Latham in
fifth place, Roy Mann in fourth, Norman Brooks in third, runner-up George
Meigh and the winner, off his new 20 handicap, Steve Rose. His round
included a back nine of 44 shots.
Back at the Bunker most of the famous five were
regretting the niggling ten inch putt that they had missed.
Division two also saw a tie for second place with Chris
John firing 38 points with his new set of Pings. Scott Haynes also
finished with 38.
The outright winner was Ian Phillips with a magnificent
44 points. “Bandit” was the most courteous name he was called at the
presentation in the Bunker and surely that is the last time he will have
the luxury of his 28 handicap.
Nearest-the-pins went to Wilf Latham (2), Scott Haynes
and the ever popular Gordon “Mr Sandman” McKnight.
