Swimming her way to victory

Pattaya’s mayor Pairat Suttithamrongsawat officially presided over the opening of the games.

The sporting events were divided into categories for boys and girls and included swimming, table tennis and volleyball. Cheerleading teams supported the competitions.

Speeding down the line, this youngster has the heart of a champion

The athletic games are held each year to provide the students the opportunity to engage in healthy activity whilst competing against each other and learning good sportsmanship while improving their individual skills.

Erland Kops - a living legend

One of the greatest Badminton players the world has ever seen visited Pattaya last week. He is Erland Kops, an eleven times winner in the All England Series, covering singles, doubles and mixed doubles. At that time there was no “world” championship but the most highly rated contest was the All England one.

Erland Kops

Erland, who then moved on to the administrative side of the sport has now retired officially, but still keeps an interest in the badminton world. The greatest difference he sees in the sport between today and those of his hey days is the type of the racquet used which he feels has changed the game from one of tactics to one of speed.

Pattaya has been one of Erland’s favourite vacation spots, first coming to visit in 1958, before there were even any hotels built. Over the years he has seen Pattaya going through ups and downs, but definitely has been seeing a steady improvement over the past ten years.

J & M Bar bags another big one

Middy Campbell, captain of the J & M Bar fishing team, hooked and landed another big 38 pound sailfish on Thursday March 29. Fishing in the Pattaya Sports Club March Deep Sea Fishing Tournament the J & M Team had a great day. Fishing on the team along with Middy were John Duckett, Jan Andersen, and Bill Cald, on holiday from Caterham Surrey England.

The J & M Bar fishing team hooked and landed a 38 pound sailfish on Thursday March 29.

Besides the big sailfish, the team ended the day with a whopping 30 queen fish with a total weight of 37 pounds, a jack, and a small shark. The team weighed in at the Jack Tar Bar on Soi Yodsak. The J & M Team has been out every week during the month of March trying for that big one. They won the January competition with a beautiful 49 pound king mackerel. They plan to start on the first day of April going for the PSC Fisherman of the Month April Award.

PH3 Run 890

Well another good turn out for the great Pattaya Hash. Another long journey to the A-site which reminds me more of going on a visa trip than travelling to an A-site. If they get much longer we have to get sleeper coaches, in the meantime the hare of the day was walking up and down the bus handing out his anti C Face leaflets, very funny, but get a life F Nose! The bus eventually pulled up some 1000 metres short of the intended A-site so people were walking in all directions.

On to plan B, all who were at the original A-site were told via mobile phone to make their way back down to where the plan B was being activated. A circle was formed and the usual format of new shoes, etc. Festering Streaker declined the new shoes down down, even though he was seen desperately trying to rip off the new price tags.

The Grand Master had to explain the run due to the hare being on a run rescue mission. On on to a good long run with some great views, it was good to see the beer truck to replace all those lost fluids, Carlsberg, Chang etc.

The Grand Master called the circle to order and promptly made a few announcements, one being that the hash hymn will be at the end of the evening as before and the bus will stay at a 4 p.m. departure.

Then an auction was held with a shirt donated by Arse-Holeo with Blowfly having the top bid of some 1500 baht. This money was donated to Jeep’s charity for the kids.

Then it was time for the bad RA Sir Airhead who dealt with some hash trashers, namely A-H, Pile Of S, Singapore S and Corn-H. By popular demand the bog seat went to Neville A-H.

Next it was time for the Belgian police department and new names Flying Pig etc. Then it was time for the Ugly RA Festering Streaker who provided some new red carpet on the ice for the Hash Royals of King Yao Yao and Queen Stella. He then iced the disrespectful ones, namely Boy George and Chicken F, Festering Streaker also gave an ice sandwich to the new court jester (court idiot, court fool) F Nose and for extra discomfort Zorro sat on the sandwich whilst being serenaded by the Master of Music with the Yogi Bear song because the fool didn’t have a hares song of his own. I think Zorro was pleased to be removed from the ice before it melted!

Moving on it was time for King Yao Yao to ice me for having an unopened can on the bus, unopened because the bus departed while I was locking the gates for everybody, nice one Yao Yao but I will still look after your interests for you whilst you are in foreign kingdoms. Can’t remember anything else because my notes disappeared during the time I spent on the ice. Then it was back to Patrick’s for some great grub. P.S. Sweetballs has a great new space age chair to sit on and we all hope Scampi Pufta as a speedy recovery.

Deputy Royal Aide opens 68th Friendship Bowling Tournament

Reporter: Boonlua Chatree

Deputy Royal Aide General Khanit Pheurmsak chaired the opening ceremony of the 68th Friendship Bowling Tournament, organized by president of the Local Friendship Bowling Club Sanga Kichasamred and held at Pattaya Bowl on 2nd Road on the morning of March 25.

Deputy Royal Aide General Khanit Pheurmsak chaired the opening ceremony of the 68th Friendship Bowling Tournament.

Twelve bowling associations, representing Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Korat, Ubon, Saraburi, Phitsanulok, Nakhon Sawan, Rayong, Chonburi, Chanthaburi, Nakhon Phatom and Ratchaburi participated in the 68th Friendship Tournament, competing for trophies in the name of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The Friendship Bowling Association’s first tournament was held 22-years ago in Ban Pong, Ratchaburi and since then more and more members have joined. Today, associations have been formed all around Thailand.

Members in the association host tournaments on a rotating basis, usually every 3-4 months. The association’s main intent is to have fun bowling in a friendly but competitive atmosphere, building unity among the various associations, with little emphasis put on the winning and losing aspect of the sport.

Many players from the member associations have become bowlers on the national teams.

The Friendship Bowling Association also raises funds for HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s programs.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

Sunday, as Pattaya Beach awakes to another day in Paradise, it’s Saturday night elsewhere. If it’s Saturday, there must be boxing “goin on”. Storied Wembly has Billy Schwer (38-50) v Newton Villareal (18-2). In Couer d’Alene Idaho USA it’s Shannon Briggs fighting another in the long line of stiffs. Only one event demands and commands international coverage: Prince Naseem (35-0, 31 KO’s) meets another in the long line of Mexican challengers in Marco Antonia Barrera (52-3, 35 KO’s).

This is not your usual Mexican challenger. Others tried to storm the Prince’s Castle with a frontal attack that usually found them floundering in the moat. Barrera will be the first to take a more cerebral approach. Barrera’s the smartest tactical fighter that the Prince has faced. Hate, love or any emotion in between, there is one thing you can’t do with the Prince. Ignore him. His unorthodox style lends itself perfectly against a fighter who takes the direct approach. Patience is not only a virtue but the only way with a chance at laying a loss on Naseem.

Not an easy task as in 19 defenses of various world titles only 2 have gone the distance. 17 KO’s from 19 fights speaks volumes. Barrera’s record isn’t as flashy, 12-2-1 in title defenses with 10 KO’s, yet still solid enough to sound a warning signal. Two of Barreras’ losses came back to back against Jr. Jones. The third was a split decision loss to Eric Morales. The scoring so bad that a highly respected writer accused one judge’s seeing eye dog of “having a bad night.”

This will be the Prince’s biggest money night of his career. Few fights in recent history have gathered the attention of the international community as this one. The MGM Grand (Las Vegas) is assured of a sell out - 13,500 plus, which is almost unheard of for a non-heavyweight fight. The fight is also unique in that a majority of the seat holders will be from someplace other than Las Vegas. A large contingent comes from England while more will be traveling across the nearby Mexican-USA border. The last time this many made the trip was 1999 when the USA played Mexico in soccer at the Rose Bowl. That day 102,000 packed the place. Estimates are that up to 70% came from south of the border. Further estimates concluded that about 10% of those returned home after the game.

There’s a theory out there, where ever that is, that the one that has the most to lose ends up losing. Barrera is fighting for his country, his honor and to reverse the Moralles loss. The Prince, with the exception of the sellout in Detroit where a large Arab population migrated, needs to find a home base where major dollars are available. He’s fighting for all the maligned newsagents in Britain. To borrow a line from a popular Frank Sinatra song, “If he can make it here he’ll make it any where”. New York? No. Las Vegas. Ka Ching... Ka Ching. Oh how the money rolls in.

Fitness Tips : The ideal fluid supply

Requirements of a sports drink

* Short gastric retention time

* Fast absorption in the small intestine

* Restores required fluids and salts

A sports drink must pass through the stomach as quickly as possible as absorption only takes place in the small intestine. That’s where it needs to be absorbed quickly in order to replenish lost substances. It is a known fact that drinks rich in electrolytes and glucose will extend performance, that chilled drinks pass through the stomach faster, and that isotonic drinks (especially NaC1 isoton) are absorbed faster in the small intestine.

Gastric retention time

Absorption of water and nutrients for the most part takes place in the small intestines. The carbohydrate content of more than 80 g / 1 liter water will slow down the gastric retention time and the absorption speed in the small intestine. This hardly pertains to regeneration drinks that are consumed after exercising. The absorption rate during exercise, on the other hand, should be as high as possible to avoid dehydration.

Depending on which form of carbohydrates you chose (molecule size), there may be higher gram listings per liter in pure carbohydrate drinks.

The chart gives clues about the maximum recommended amount per carbohydrate version (from Neumann, 1994):

Carbohydrate

Recommended Amount

Fructose
Glucose
Sucrose
Starch solution
Maltose
Maltodextrin

35
80
100
100
120
150

If fructose is dependent on the molecule size, it will take it longer to be absorbed than for instance Maltodextrin. If we were to mix a sports drink with 8% carbohydrate content with mostly fructose, the drink would be too concentrated.

Fast absorption? Put salt into your drinks!

It is interesting to note that newer research findings put a greater emphasis on the sodium content of the drink. Other electrolytes do not seem to play a role in fluid absorption. With sodium chloride you will have absorption of 3 milliliters water per centimeter of small intestine, whereas without sodium chloride only 1 milliliter. Therefore, adding salt accelerates the absorption of water. Without added salt, your fluid absorption clearly stays below one liter.

Herb’s 48 inches wins bragging rights

PSC Three Sisters Golf

On Monday the 26th, golfers from the Three Sisters again met at Siam Country Club for their regular Monday ritual. The going was hot and heavy but Herb Ishinaga managed to scramble to the top with a credible 39 points to win the bragging rights.

With a new driver in hand measuring 48 inches, Herb managed to duff the first few drives but then began to really connect to improve his game. Herb beat Paul Kraft on count back but not by much.

Hot on their heels were John Gibson and Dene Mundy with 38 points each. Paul four putted a green to lose and John Gibson and Herb did not do well on the 18th as it was being sanded. Those were the excuses anyway.

The rest of the field did well as the course seem to be in good shape. In the next few days the greens will be worked on and may not be in good shape for a while.

Golfers from the Three Sisters were advised that next Monday golf was being cancelled so that we can participate in the Pattaya Sports Club Championship tournament at Green Valley, which will be held on Monday and Tuesday.
