Entries from Taipei and Vietnam took the lion’s share
of top spots in the men’s open division of the 4th Taekwondo
International Club Championships held at the Ambassador City Hotel July
5th through 7th.
Taipei took 5 gold medals in the men’s open division,
whilst Vietnam took 2 and Bhutan one.
The ladies from Down Under had a good showing in the
women’s open divisions, taking 3 gold medals out of 5 weight divisions.
Vietnam took the other two gold medals.
The event was supported and organized by the National
Taekwondo Association of Thailand. Chairman of the International Taekwondo
Club, Paisan Shangchongpradis welcomed 39 teams from 11 countries who
competed for trophies in the name of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha
Chakri Sirindhorn. Team entrants included Malaysia, Canada, Singapore,
Bhutan, Australia, Brunei, Korea, Taipei, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Thailand.
A large crowd of over 500 supporters gathered to watch
the event, staged to support the unique sport of Taekwondo in Thailand and
provide an opportunity for Thai athletes to engage in international
competition.

Lawn Bowls back rolling along
Starts new season with 2 divisions
Lawn bowls at the Bowling Green have started their new
season, this time around with 2 divisions.
In division one in the first week of play, the team of
the decade (the Carlsberg Kids) was not able to play due to an intense
legal battle over copy rights!
Not much has changed from last season, other than the
new team Misty’s (who are suspected of bringing in a ringer). The Cap in
Hand team are hoping a slight name change will improve the standard of
play. Who are they kidding! The Windmills are again the ever improving
team. Tommy’s Lads and the Hammers played well, but everyone can’t
win, keep trying lads.
Division One Player of the Week was a tie between Tim
and Willie of Misty’s.
Coming soon: The new par 3 golf & 9 end and lawn
bowling league, and the seeded doubles (drawn) competition 4 & 5 of
August
This week’s results: Manutd’s 9 v Windmills 21;
Mistys 18 v Tommy’s Bar 12.
As Sherlock Holmes once said, “The games a foot”
This second league is a real breath of fresh air. The
girls have entered the arena, showing just what they can do! Most of the
first league are happy they have got 1 more season without having to play
them.
There has been a genuine response from the Thai
national team coach, who is coming down here to take a look for himself!
The Growlers played well (they also won the best
dressed team award); let’s hope the doctor gives the all clear for the 2
asylum teams to put in an appearance soon.
Player of the Week: Jeang (Kevin’s wife)
Best new player: Nit (big Frank’s wife)
This week’s results: Growlers 27 v Northsouth 6; Team Somtam 9 v
Bootnecks 18; Yingyang’s 17 v Heritage 8

The Bowling Green recently held a
charity event for the Computers For Thai Kids project. The day when
well, having more than 20 participants taking part in a knockout.
The eventual winners were the Pattaya Tigers. All the kids had a
good day eating ice cream, burgers and coke, as well as having a
game of bowls. There was a total of approximately 9000 baht raised
for the kids. Thank you to all the people who took part. |
Fitness Tips: Mixed bag of
tips (part 1)
G’day readers, a mixed bag of tips this week - hope
you can get something out of it.
Labels under the microscope
Over the next two years, you will notice some changes
to the labels on food packaging from Down Under. New food labelling laws
have been introduced in Australia and New Zealand, which require that
almost all products carry a mandatory nutrition information panel. In the
past, nutrition information panels were required only when a nutrition
claim such as ‘low fat’ or ‘low salt’ was made. The mandatory
nutrition information panels must include information about energy (kJ),
protein, fat (which saturated fat being listed separately), carbohydrate
(total sugars being listed separately), and sodium.
David
Garred and Andrew Wood looking fit and trim after participating in the
Pattaya International Marathon events on July 15
The percentage of key ingredients in a product must now
be shown. The key ingredient will not necessarily be the main ingredient
in terms of mass, but it will be the ingredient that gives the food its
character. You will now be able to tell what percentage of raspberry jam
is actually made up of raspberries, for example.
The new labelling laws will also ensure that the main
foods that may cause allergies (e.g., peanuts and seafood) are declared on
the label, and warning statements are provided for certain foods that can
cause allergic reactions (e.g., Royal Jelly). Products that contain
substances that have a potential health risk must also include a statement
alerting buyers to the presence of the substance.
Fish oil on the menu
Fish oil may now be included in muesli bars, cheese,
yoghurt and ice cream, thanks to breakthrough technology by Australia’s
CSIRO. The new technology enables food manufacturers to produce foods
containing the functional health benefits of fish oil, but without the
fish taste! Functional foods (nutraceuticals) are a rapidly growing
segment of the food market, worth more than US$86 billion worldwide. You
might be wondering why would you want fish oil in these things. I don’t
have pages of space here so let me just say that it is very good for you.
A wine a day keeps the doctor away
Consuming one to two glasses of wine daily may reduce
your risk of coronary heart disease, according to a position statement
recently released from the American Heart Association. Higher consumption,
however, has been related to increased risk of heart disease, stroke,
accidents and other health problems, and there is no clear evidence yet
that wine is more beneficial than other forms of alcohol (indeed,
researchers believe the same biological effect can even be achieved with
grape juice). Because of the potential for alcohol abuse, the Heart
Foundation declines to recommend alcohol or wine as a cardio protective
strategy. The studies that I have come across have indicated that red wine
is better for you than white in each, but while the studies were numerous,
the testing and control groups were rather small and it’s hard to argue
with the Heart Foundation, but drinking, literally, 1 glass did help in
all the tests.

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker
On Tuesday, 17th July, the Bunker Boys travelled to
nearby Phoenix Golf Club for their weekly Stableford competition.
On a windy day the scores varied between the golfers but
The Sandman, Gordon McKnight and Scott Haynes managed to finish level on 36
points, just behind the returning George Meigh on 41 points. The winner was
Colin Morgan with 43 points.
Nearest-the-pin awards went to George Meigh, Gordon,
Scott and Desperate Dan the Fireman. The Bunker Banana Booby prize was
awarded jointly to The Pathfinder and the Transport Manager for their dismal
performances which saw them tie for last place! They later had the pleasure
of a banana split. The Bunker lucky draw was won by Mr. Mogens.
Negative Drive Clive comes alive!
20th July saw the Bunker Boys travel to Pattaya Country
Club for a medal competition. The field was divided into two divisions with
the first division headed by Peter “Dogleg” Allcorn firing net 71 with
George Meigh and Mr. Loy joint second with 3 over par.
Division two had the transport manager John Preddy and
negative drive Clive Harris sharing top honours with net 70. Everyone was
delighted that Clive has at last got on the podium.
Near pins went to Stan the Man, the Pathfinder, and the
Sandman, all playing in the last group with Mr. Loy who missed his
opportunity on the 16th by 2 feet.
The Bunker Bananas were awarded to John Stewart for his
magnificent 126. The lucky draw was won by David Jeater.
A bit of golf trivia, how do you shoot 3 over par and
have your handicap cut 3 strokes? Stan the Man answered that by taking 32
strokes on only 3 holes, and 68 on the other 15!

PSC Golf from Three Sisters
Monday July 16 was one of those delightful days when we
are all reminded why we chose Pattaya as a place to live and play golf. A
total of twenty-three players turned up for this weekly event including
two visitors, Tom “Doc” Buckley up from Australia and Dick
“Banker” McKegney on one of his frequent visits from Singapore. Both
guys were thoroughly impressed with the camaraderie existing within this
group. Tom was doubly pleased to meet PSC Golf Chairman Steve Donovan and
discover they both originate from Cork in the Republic of Ireland.
Bob
Moberg (right) enjoys his bragging rights with Herbie Ishinaga.
The bragging rights for the week went to Bob Moberg
with 41 points, finally getting a good round in after four weeks of
frustration. Dougie Powell was in second place with an uncontested 39
points.
At the bottom of the barrel was John Moore to take the
“Ugly Sister” award with a measly 22 points, an unusual situation for
John who can usually be relied upon to shoot to his handicap.
A week of countless count backs that
leaves Richard Livingston reeling
IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven
Monday 16th July - Sriracha (Stableford)
1st Division
1st: Harry Riley, 38 pts (cb9 19, cb6 12, cb3 7 pts)
2nd: Anders Karlsson, 38 pts (cb9 19, cb6 12, cb3 5 pts)
3rd: Jimmee Little, 36 pts (cb9 18 pts)
4th: Magnus Johansson, 36 pts (cb9 17 pts)
2nd Division
1st: Jens Gunnarsson, 42 pts
2nd: Claes Ernlund, 41 pts
3rd: Kevin Fortt, 35 pts
4th: Oradeee Kaesavane, 34 pts
An unusually large contingent of golfers turned out at
The Haven, requiring the TAGGS to form two divisions for the first time in
a long while. The 1st division honors went to Harry Riley, who was
involved in a count back for the second time running, on this occasion
winning out over Anders Karlsson after an exhausting series of
calculations that left Richard gasping for a Sangthip coke. Third place
also involved a count back, which a refreshed Richard managed a little
quicker, with Jimmee, off his new handicap, getting the nod over Magnus
Johansson.
The 2nd division saw Jens Gunnarsson walking away from
all the field except Claes Ernlund, who faltered on the last hole, for
which Richard was truly grateful, he already having refreshed himself
nearly to excess. Kevin enjoyed just pipping Oradee, who was playing her
last game before her annual holiday with Klaus in Denmark. Jens and Claes
can look forward to playing off revised handicaps after the weekend. A
well refreshed Richard welcomed David Lacey from England to the day’s
celebrations.
Wednesday 18th July - Khao Kheow (Medal)
1st: Bob Morrison, 64
2nd: Roland Piechocki, 67
3rd: Serge Straeten, 69
4th: Brian Wilkinson, 69
5th: Stephen Beard, 69
6th: Barry Winton, 69
7th: Mark Campbell, 69
Another large group, but not so big as to require 2
divisions, left The Haven to play the well presented Khao Kheow Country
Club for the second occasion in two weeks, this time off the white tees.
Bob Morrison hit the ball so sweetly he made the rest of the very
competitive field look a little ragged by shooting a great 64 net,
followed by Roland lagging 3 shots behind on a net 67.
3rd to 7th places were involved in another massive
count back, but this time Richard was ready having got to the bar earlier
than the returned cards.
Barry Winton walked away with the best gross, carding a
75, for which he was awarded a TAGGS cap.
Richard welcomed back Malcolm Clare from a long stint
on the high seas whilst welcoming new member Doug Maiko from the USA.
Thought of the day, “I always thought a sixty nine was good before
today” anon.
Friday 20th July - Phoenix Golf Club (Bogey)
1st: Brian Kelly, 4 up (cb9 5 up)
2nd: Harry Riley, 4 up (cb9 3 up)
3rd: Anders Karlsson, 3 up
4th: Stephen Beard, 1 up (cb9 2 up)
5th: Malcolm Clare, 1 up (cb9 3 down)
6th: Graham Davis, All square (cb9 3up, cb6 3up)
7th: Michel Cassiers, All square (cb9 3up, cb6 2up)
8th to 14th: 9 others at all square
Once again count backs were the big thing at The Haven
with the Bogeyman beating out Harry who was involved for the third time in
four outings. The always steady Brian Kelly managed to beat the course 5
up on the back nine, which was an exceptional achievement on a layout that
was in excellent condition and playing quite hard in the wind.
Anders Karlsson and the Doctor found themselves on the
podium for the second time this week and surely must get to the top soon.
Malcolm Clare also had a very good card on only his second outing this
hitch and will also be looking to climb the leader board in the near
future.
Barry Winton again shot a great round of 77 gross but
was unable to make it to the prize winner’s circle being one of the 7
players to achieve all square and losing out in the mammoth count back.
Richard welcomed new members Stewart Hutchings and
Willy McBride from the UK as well as Michel Cassiers from Belgium, who
managed to acquit himself well on his first time out with the TAGGS.
Tough week for PSC golfers
Pattaya Sports Club Golf from the Cafe
Kronborg
Monday, July 16 - Natural Park Hills (Stableford)
The Natural Park Hills layout was in fine condition,
the weather was stupendous and the greens were quick, but the scores were
horrible.
Rich Montana struggled to first place with 30 points,
then a three way count back with 26 points happened, with John Leavy
finishing second, Tony Cashman third and Wayne Koch fourth.
Thursday, July 19 - Khao Kheow (Stableford)
Beautiful Khao Kheow Country Club was host for a
Stableford competition.
Bob Morrison took the A flight with 36 points, Anders
Karlsson finished second with 34 points and steady Ebrahim finished third
with 32 points.
Frank Polizotto took the B flight with 36 points. Big
Pete Galle took second on a count back from steady Arthur Bailey, both
with 35 points.
PH3 Run 906
News Flash: “Pattaya Hasher decapitated by miniature
helicopter” Oh well! I guess this really didn’t really happen, but it
could have, read on. When I drove down from Bangkok Monday morning, it
started to rain a little before reaching Chonburi and I thought it might be
a wet run. Fortunately, the weather cooperated and it was a perfect day for
the run.
Frankly, I didn’t expect to bring any new shoes, but
then I saw Lik at one of the Diana Inn beer bars and couldn’t resist. So
it was off to Mike’s where I made yet another new shoe purchase. I really
should invest some money in shoe manufacturing.
This was to be a Belgium run hared by Fini the F, V.V.
and the brains of the operation, Flying Frog. Hashers were expecting this to
be a great run, starting from such a tranquil setting with a colourful,
dreamlike Wat in the near distance. Damn, but were the hashers to get a big
surprise. After the new shoes were given down downs - including Sir Airhead
who had both new shoes for himself and a TQ 2 lady. The hares explained the
run and the pack was off and running into the lush, tropical foliage of
emerald green tapioca plants. But what’s this, two minutes into the run
and the pack is totally bewildered and resembles a comic Chinese fire drill
- total chaos. Suddenly the front of the pack was the back of the pack and
Fossil was bringing up the rear. Oh, but what a lovely little rear she has.
Finally paper was spotted and the pack was finally off on the trail.
The general comments made by the runners were that the
trail was laid with too little paper and in at least two locations was laid
directly through tapioca fields. This is a major No-No and we must always
respect that we are guests in this wonderful, user-friendly country.
It was good to see some long lost faces including The
Pope and his family, and Kim Fletcher and his family. Welcome back. You talk
about dedicated hashers; K A M actually arrived via a Bangkok taxi with his
lady.
After the run had finished, a “civilian” “pilot”
was flying a miniature remote controlled airplane over our heads and I could
picture him losing control and having the plane land among a group of
hashers causing major damage. A miniature helicopter followed the miniature
airplane and its “massive” spinning rotor blade could easily have
decapitated some poor unsuspecting soul had the “pilot” lost control of
his aircraft. It was great fun watching these small aircraft fly and provide
entertainment for one and all.
C Face called for a circle to be formed at 6:45 p.m. and
the pack barely responded. Honestly, it was like most of the hashers had
never been on a run. Lets show a little more spirit next week.
Sir Airhead was called in as the Religious Advisor and
promptly had the hares on ice - Fini, V.V. and Flying Frog. The hares were
lucky to escape getting Hash s@#t, maybe next time?
Dainty Shoed Cheap Foreign Bastard who now wears the
coveted hash toilet seat replaced A-H as the Hash Trash. The lovely Ewok was
made to sit on ice and receive a new pair of Betty Boop slippers. Then the
Linda Bar mob was iced for the usual Rule 6 violations, A-H, Homocyclist and
K A M.
Since Patrick’s Belgium bar had a do on for the
Belgians the Happy Hour Bar was at Angels Place on Soi 7, but the tasty food
was prepared by Flying Frog. Everyone had a great time.
On-On Hammer
Laem Chabang provides the perfect
backdrop for the PSC’s 9th Members’ tournament
Eighty-five members of the Pattaya Sports Club enjoyed
the unsurpassed conditioning of this Jack Nicklaus designed layout on
Friday, July 13. The immaculate fairways and lightening greens can often
encourage the amateur golfer to some of his finest scores and certainly
Richard Pietrskiewiez was no exception as he topped “C” flight and the
field with 45, despite a couple of non-scoring holes. In so doing Richard
P. said “hello” to a beautiful glass trophy and “goodbye” to his
24 handicap.
Also stepping forward to claim their respective
divisions’ top prizes were “A” flight’s Paul Moore with 42 points
and “B” flight’s Mark Gorda with 39 points. Both players will be
returning to work within the week and this should make those stints go a
little easier. To those of us staying home it is hoped they don’t return
before the 10th Members’ Tournament, which is scheduled for Plutaluang (Sattahip)
on the 17th of August, so that we might have a chance of winning.
Derek Reaper won the long drive honey pot and indicated
that, being a hunting enthusiast, he hoped to use the winning funds to
defray his rifle club membership dues.
This unique event which offers a free entry fee, due to
the financial input of the Pattaya Sports Club, was further enhanced by
the generous donations of complimentary vouchers from Laem Chabang,
Shenanigans, Rosie O’Grady’s, the Blue Parrot, Tequila Reef and the
Cafe Kronborg (thanks Papa Ray).
