Guests enjoy ‘Diner Extraordinaire’ at the Royal Wing
Gourmet evening of the Chaine Des Rotisseurs
Members
of the Chaine des Rotisseurs local chapter, the Bailliage de Pattaya are
“im sabai” as is said in the local vernacular, which translates to
“full and happy” after a delicious dining experience.
Le Benjarong Restaurant at the Royal Cliff’s
exclusive “Wing” was the venue for the latest semi-formal dinner of
the Chaine des Rotisseurs local chapter, the Bailliage de Pattaya. Balli
Regional, Mme. Marion Vogt, welcomed members and their guests in the
recently renovated, beautiful surroundings of the Wing’s Lobby, very
much in style with a glass of Tyrell’s Premium Brut Sparkling Wine. At
the same time, one had the chance to greet the newly appointed resident
manager, Nick Bauer, who used this opportunity to introduce himself to the
local gourmet-community.
“Spring at the Wing” was the theme of the evening,
and the natural chique and classic setting of Le Benjarong did not need
any additional decoration other than a professional dinner set-up. After
Mme. Marion’s opening remarks, and husband Michael’s explanation about
the wines of the evening, the 21 attendees could enjoy pan-fried
sweetbread medallions on assorted spring salad, accompanied with raspberry
relish and balsamico syrup. The horseradish cream soup with fried red
snapper and freshly pounded basil pesto, topped with tomato tartar became
everyone’s favorite that evening, and fellow hotelier Rene Pisters from
the Thai Garden Resort seriously considered ordering a second one.
The taste buds were already tempted by Baudroie filets
on a spicy lemongrass-coconut emulsion, but were even more challenged by
the mango sherbet served with chilly spiced mango chutney. An interesting
combination, and a topic for discussion during the nicotine-break
afterwards.
The wine changed to another Australian, “Long Flat
Red 2000”, from one of Tyrell’s most famous vineyards, boasting an
international reputation for its consistency of style, and which has
become an Australian icon. This wine was a perfect choice for the main
course, a combination of capon and lamb loin, topped on pumpkin and potato
galette, accompanied with a red port wine reduction.
The fresh cheese terrine with roasted spring potatoes
was delicious, and was voted 1st runner-up after the previously mentioned
soup. One could proclaim the last course of the evening a re-invention of
the dessert, as the guests were treated with chocolate ravioli with white
bean ice cream (!), and pink pomelo-caramel sauce.
It has to be said that the executive chef of the Royal
Wing, Fabian Strutz, and his brigade, have indeed taken a different
approach, as much risky as it was successful, by combining ingredients and
food items, which are not known to go along well. However, looking at the
classic culture of the table from a different angle and perspective,
combined with unusual ideas and visions, is exactly what Mme. Marion and
her local Bailliage would like to promote. Pattaya and it’s top quality
chefs have the potential to go different ways, and, without jeopardizing
quality and culture, make evenings such as this very enjoyable, very
relaxed, and a talk-about event.
For those of you readers who would like to learn more
about the Chaine des Rotisseurs, and to meet the members, please mark
Sunday, 23rd of June, on your calendar. The local chapter of the Chaine
will organize a high-quality brunch at “Casa Pascal”, priced at 990
baht per person (including a welcome glass of champagne).
Deputy PM Banharn Silpa-archa tours Horseshoe Point Resort and Country Club
Banharn Silpa-archa, deputy prime minister and Chart
Thai Party leader, recently joined the growing list of Thailand’s top
dignitaries who have visited the ‘Horse Shoe Point Resort and Country
Club.
Banharn
paid his respects to the statue of the late Kiart Srifuangfung at the
Horseshoe Point Resort and Country Club.
The former PM and his entourage received a warm welcome
from Chaikiri and Chainarin Srifuangfung, who were delighted to give
Banharn a complete tour of the club.
Banharn then paid his respects to the statue of the
gentleman’s late father, Kiart Srifuangfung, who did much for the
community during his lifetime. The sons and grandchildren erected the
statue of their father within the 5 million baht hall on the 400 rai of
land where the museum of the Three Kings stands. The ancient and beautiful
Chinese story of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms is portrayed on a mural
painted by professional artists from China.
Chaikiri and Chainarin Srifuangfung reiterated to the
former PM why they built the Three Kings museum. They said their father
had bought the land about 30 years ago and it was here that he often came
to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, and the birds and plants in their
natural habitat. He wanted to build the Three Kings Museum to share the
story and history of the Kings with people from all over the world. He
passed away in 1992, and the family honored his wish by building the
museum.
One of the most interesting features of the monument to
the Kings is the 20 pieces of petrified teak wood estimated to be 1
million years old.

Naval Commander of Amphibious Group 3 speaks to the Rotary Club of Taksin Pattaya on the values of service above self
Rear Admiral W. Clyde Marsh, Commander of Amphibious
Group 3 of the U.S. Navy was the guest speaker at the recent meeting of
the Rotary Club of Taksin Pattaya, held at their new venue the Dusit
Resort Pattaya.
Rear
Admiral W. Clyde Marsh (center), Commander of Amphibious Group 3 of the
U.S. Navy receives a warm welcome from like-minded charitable people from
the Rotary Club of Taksin-Pattaya (background), Premruedee
Jitthiwutthikarn, President of the YWCA Pattaya Chapter (3rd from right)
and Nittaya Patimasongkroh past president of the Lions Club of Phratamnak.
Rear Admiral Marsh said during his speech to Rotarians
that this was his first visit to Pattaya as an Admiral, although he has
visited Pattaya before, the first time being in 1975. He added, “This is
a beautiful city in a beautiful country. The friendliness and hospitality
of local citizens is why Pattaya is a favorite port visit for the U.S.
Navy - and me!”
He went on to describe the similarities between
military service and organizations such as Rotary, Lions and the YWCA (all
the respective presidents of which attended the evening) on the aspects of
service above self.
RADM Marsh told the group, citing a passage from
Buddhism, “Buddha teaches us that we must rid ourselves of our selfish
mind and replace it with a will to help others. An act to make another
happy inspires the other to make still another happy, and so happiness is
born from such an act.”
The concept of service above self is the essence in
which charity organizations and the U.S. Navy keep in mind when performing
community relations service projects (Comrels).
Some of these Comrels have already taken place, with
Navy personnel already distributing toys and other items to the children
at the Redemptorist Street Children’s Home in Banglamung and children at
the School for the Blind. The sailors also played a football match with
the children. The children easily beat the blindfolded sailors.
True, the military visits Thailand to engage in
military exercises, but perhaps more importantly, at least for the local
community, they interact with the greater community at professional and
social levels.
The Navy has had a tradition of providing service to
community throughout the region, as RADM Marsh put it so aptly, “Our
servicemen and women have built, painted, barbequed, visited, taught,
listened, learned, vaccinated and shared with the Thais. In return we have
been treated with kindness, like friends so often are, as visitors we have
always been welcomed with open arms.”
This sentiment could be felt around the room, since the
Navy has coordinated with all major charity organizations in the region.
Following the speech the Rear Admiral presented charter
president, Peter Thorand with a plaque from the Amphibious Group Three in
recognition for his efforts, through Rotary in providing service to the
community.
In turn Rear Admiral Marsh was inducted as an honorary
member of the Rotary Club of Taksin Pattaya, being pinned by president
elect for the Rotary Year 2002-2003, Ingo Rauber.
President of the Lions Club of Pattaya, Somchai
Manothavorn and Premrudee Jitthiwutthikarn, President of the YWCA Pattaya
Chapter also presented pins to the Rear Admiral as a token of thanks on
behalf of their respective organizations for the continued support
received from the US Navy in carrying their many projects.
Rear Admiral W. Clyde Walsh has 90 commands under him
totaling 17 ships and over 17,000 personnel from Naval Coastal Warfare
reserves to assault craft. He is in charge of all logistics
pre-positioning for this year’s Cobra Gold exercises.

The Pattaya International Ladies Club held a May Day
Brunch at the Auguste Renoir Restaurant in the Flamingo Hotel to celebrate
the April 30 birthday Queen Beatrix of Holland. Proceeds from the
celebrations went to benefit the club’s charitable activities.
PILC
president, Mrs. Laurence Fatus (right) and members of the Pattaya
International Ladies Club visited the Redemptorist Street Kids Home in
Banglamung to donate bedding, nightwear, personal hygiene items and
265,000 baht for a new industrial washing machine.
PILC president, Mrs. Laurence Fatus presided over the
party. She also took the opportunity to ask club members for their input
and opinions for the club’s newsletter.
Special guest speaker, Pattaya resident Dutch
businessman Van Danm presented interesting insight into Dutch history.
Club members happily participated in the theme of the
brunch, arriving at the event dressed in orange clothes (the Dutch Royal
color), and pleasantly enjoyed their morning coffee and Dutch cuisine. The
party continued with beautiful ballads from the Crystal Bar Band, which
hails from the Royal Cliff Hotel.
Each month, the PILC tries to highlight themes of
different countries at its brunch meetings. Last month the club celebrated
Thai Songkran, this month of course was Holland’s Queen Beatrix’s
birthday, and next month the club plans to celebrate the Queen of
England’s birthday.

paid a visit to the Redemptorist Street Kids Home in Banglamung to donate
bedding, nightwear and personal hygienic items for the girls’ dormitory,
