The Rotary Club of Pattaya, as part of its public

Pattaya community, and this year the club granted 20 scholarships to
selected students from Pattaya municipal schools, and 40 scholarships to
selected students from Banglamung district elementary schools. The total

Rear Adm. Jeffrey B. Cassias gives CARAT task force presentation to Rotary
During a special meeting called by the Rotary Club of
Taksin-Pattaya at Dusit Resort, Rear Adm. Jeffrey B. Cassias, Commander
Logistic Group, Western Pacific out of Singapore, was invited for a short
presentation on the CARAT task force. The discussion included the facts
and figures of the 8th annual exercise, a contingent of 5 ships with 1400
soldiers, sailors, coastguardsmen and 300 marines.
Members
of the Rotary Club of Taksin-Pattaya, the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya,
the Lions Club of Pratamnak, the YWCA Pattaya Chapter, the Pattaya
International Ladies Club, the Association of Filipinos in Thailand and
the Skal Club of Pattaya and East Thailand thank Rear Adm. Jeffrey B.
Cassias and the US Navy for all the help they continue to provide for the
region.
The U.S. Navy has an annual budget of US$100 billion,
employs 730,000 military and civilian employees, and has 417 ships, of
which 40% are at any given time at sea. The US Navy operates 47 ships in
South East Asia, for which the regional headquarters in Singapore does the
logistics, supplies fuel and ammunition and disburses operational
assignments.
The tri-fold CARAT mission includes enhancing regional
cooperation, increasing interoperability and building friendships between
the U.S. and the nations involved. It also strengthens professional skills
at every level, from the most junior to the more senior.
Peter Malhotra, MD of Pattaya Mail and sergeant
at arms of the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya, thanked the admiral on
behalf of all service organizations and the people of Thailand for the
Navy’s support in the region, and particularly Thailand. Peter
acknowledged that Thailand’s citizens are aware of how important the US
Navy’s is to Asia and that it has contributed much to the stability of
the region.
Peter Thorand, charter president of the Rotary Club of
Taksin-Pattaya, presented the admiral with a certificate of appreciation,
issued by Bhichai Rattakul, 2002-03 president of Rotary International,
thanking the US Navy for all the support they’ve given and continue to
give to the poor and needy in Thailand.
Chef Roberto perks up Brits after World Cup slips away
The British Chamber of Commerce Thailand (BCCT) held
their monthly networking night last weekend at L’Opera Restaurant in the
Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate. One of the sponsors, also president
and CEO of Hemaraj Land and Development, David Nardone was there to
welcome the guests to his superb industrial site.
With David Beckham and the England football team having
gone down 2:1 to Brazil, football was not the flavour of the evening, and
although none were seen to be sporting black armbands, stiff upper lips
were quivering.

Watkins (left) and David Nardone, president and CEO of Hemaraj Land and
Development, one of the sponsors on the evening.
To help boost the flagging spirits, Chef Roberto of
L’Opera Restaurant produced some English steak pies to make the Brits
feel at home, in addition to his mini-pizzas, full-sized pizzas and garlic
bread tasty bits. With sponsorship from Waste Management Siam, John
Hamilton, the site manager for WMS, kept the spirits up, too, with wines
and beers for the function.
Though predominantly a British night, there were many
nationalities there to network with the Brits. Canadian Stacey Arthur from
TNT and Peera Thaweecvhart from Exel were seen huddling, while newcomer
Aussie Stuart Saunders from Esdesign was seen putting assorted toes in the
water while contemplating setting up a manufacturing business on the ESIE.
The Royal Cliff Beach Resort’s Jerri Povibool was seen putting on a
great front while chatting to Paul Farnworth from the wonderfully
colourful company called Fire & Gas. Next time avoid the chillies,
Paul! Larger than life American George T Strampp was passing out business
cards for his new venture called Automotive Manufacturing Solutions - he
would have no trouble getting work in America with its troubled auto
industry, but George likes it too much here!
By the end of the evening, the Brits had licked their
wounds and were busy cheering for America in the next round of the soccer
World Cup. Unfortunately they went down too, so the BCCT networking
evening was really their only high point. Thanks David Nardone, John
Hamilton and chef Roberto!
