Shenanigans Ladies Summer Stableford

By Mike Franklin

Just a week after scoring a net 61 and 47 Stableford points in TAGGS Independence Day tournament at Phoenix, resulting in a handicap cut from 16 to 13, Lamud Chaidara produced another winning performance at windy Eastern Star in Shenanigans Ladies Summer Stableford on Friday July 12.

Lamud’s gross 79 off the stick produced 42 Stableford points to win the Champion’s Plate and Low Gross trophy. In a round that included three birdies and seven pars, she also claimed near pins on holes eight and fifteen, and the long putt on hole nine.

Maren Panthong, playing off a 32 handicap, also returned 42 points but lost in a count back with Lamud for the best overall score. However, it was good enough to win Division II, with Jampa Dumas runner-up with 40 points. Thea de Korte won Division I with 36 points, closely chased by runner-up Im Woodruffe with 35 points.

Mike Franklin presents the championship plate to Shenanigans Ladies Summer Stableford Champion 2002 Lamud Chaidara.

The ‘No Handicap’ Division III was won by Wasana Prangnghleuam with a gross 127, closely followed by Ning Fletcher and Alice Ramsay, both returning 130 gross.

Lamun Hanley scored twice in the technical prizes with a near pin on hole four and the long putt on hole ten. Mam Trayling won the Division I long drive on hole thirteen, and Noonit Tawapee for Divisions II & III on hole nine.

Toy, Lamun, & Amphiw - friends on and off the course set out for a day in the sun.

It was a windy day on a well-prepared Eastern Star course with all the usual ‘shenanigans’ at the turn. Kim Fletcher and Steve Ryser served the champagne, assisted by Wanchai serving other drinks and delicious snacks, including Chef Sunny’s famous curry puffs. Ladies with golf carts were able to stock up for the second nine and certainly took advantage of the offer.

Phew, this game of golf can be tiring. Ning, Im & Noonit say, good thing for liquid refreshments.

The Thai and Curry Night buffets were waiting for the players back at Shenanigans later, prior to the prize giving and lucky draw emceed by tournament organizer Mike Franklin. Due thanks were extended to the sponsors. Kitty Stor for the Shenanigans ‘discretely logoed’ ladies ‘OK’ Fashion golf shirt given to all the players and now on sale at Shenanigans for just B.350. To Khun Tira, marketing manager of Dunlop Sports, for donating valuable prize vouchers and ladies golf bags; to Heineken for an assortment of hats, umbrellas, shorts, golf balls, etc., and to Eastern Star for the now familiar “Two Nights for Four Persons’ Holiday package. All greatly appreciated and adding to the success of the day.

A last minute donation of draw prizes came from one of the players, singing star Cristina Bien - a special CD recently recorded for family & friends. Cristina is here to give a charity concert on July 18th at the Thai Garden Resort and to mark the launch of Pattaya Blatt.

Choke Dee! Mam, Usa, & Lamud enjoy a toast at the turn.

It was a very good day, and another Shenanigans day exclusively for the Ladies.

Thailand’s Siri Chandler sails brilliantly in France

Adapted from ISAF reports and photographed by Peter Cummins

The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) held the World Sailing Games at the beautiful Mediterranean city of Marseilles June 29 to - July 10, 2002, which was one of the largest gatherings of world champion yachtsmen and women ever assembled.

The organizers of this massive undertaking congratulated Thailand’s own Siri Chandler who, along with her New Zealand ‘cousin’, Miranda Powrie) were among 38 sailors from 13 countries who benefited, for the first time, from support under a new ISAF Athlete’s Participation Programme.

Siri passes in front of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club during the recent Asian Pacific Laser Radial Championships. They helped her to compete well in France.

The programme was introduced at the 2002 World Sailing Games to assist promising sailors with travel and accommodation costs and to provide coaching expertise before and during racing, under leading sailing coach, France’s Olivier Magne.

Siri, unquestionably one of Thailand’s best Laser - and lady - sailors, as she does here in Thai waters, performed very well in the lighter winds and finished well in the first tierce of the world’s best Laser sailors, with several top places out off Marseilles.

Speaking to ISAF representatives after the event, Siri - who benefited immensely from the coaching support said, “I don’t feel as though I belong at the top of the fleet, with all these excellent sailors here.” However, her coach Olivier disputed this saying, “Siri meticulously prepares herself prior to the race and has every ability to continue to sail as well during the rest of the regatta.” Siri admits she favours the lighter winds, saying, “Back home in Thailand, when it gets windy, I sail a Hobie, not a Laser!”

A “mere slip of a girl”, weighing in at around 45 kg, the 32-year-old former Optimist sailor has competed in the 1982, 1983 and 1984 Optimist World Championships in various parts of the world. In April this year she placed sixth overall (in the open fleet) at the Laser Radial Asian Pacific Championships held in Thailand, and was first woman overall, with results including three first places.

Siri’s performance is a great credit to the tremendous advances made in Thailand sailing circles over the past few years and her enthusiasm is only to be expected from the daughter of one of Thailand’s driving forces behind sailing and yacht racing - especially among juniors - Albert T. Chandler, an Olympic and International judge of the highest repute.

Incidentally, for the information of the curious who may note that the acronym ISAF does not quite fit with the title “International Sailing Federation”, the “A” was added to distinguish it from the other ISF - “International Soccer Federation”: enough of that these past six weeks!

Little ones to compete for fun and prizes

Kindergarten sports gets underway this weekend

Pacific Park in Sriracha will be packed to the rim with proud parents, soccer moms, aunts, uncles and camera toting dads, and oh yeah, a hundred or so budding athletes when the Eastern Seaboard Kindergarten Sports Tournament gets underway this weekend.

They’re off! And lane 4 takes the early lead in qualifying for the exciting scooter race.

The little ones will be competing in football, athletics, long jump, high jump, scooter, parade contest, and cheerleading.

The tournament will run from July 20-21 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pacific Park in Sriracha. Winners will receive over 20,000 baht in scholarships and trophies from the minister of Science, Technology and Environment, Sonthaya Khunpluem.

Pacific Park Sriracha, in cooperation with the Thai Athletic Association, the Religious Education Development and Cultural Bureau, the Education Office Region 12, Chonburi, and Showforth Sports Limited, are organizing this event, the second Eastern Seaboard Kindergarten Sports Tournament.

Two, four, six, eight, who do we appreciate ... gooooo red & white! Yea!

A spokesperson for the organizers said that the aim of the tournament is to, “enhance unity among kindergarteners from all over the nation and to teach small children from 3-6 years of age to value sports as a way to exert their energy and stay healthy.”

A pre-tournament press conference and exhibition was held last weekend at Pacific Park Sriracha, presided over by the president of the Chonburi Athletic Association, Withya Khunpluem, and was attended by many families and representatives from various schools.

If the pre-tournament fun is anything to go by, the actual tournament should be a whole lot of fun!

Football World Cup to be decided in Pattaya

The 10 “Nations” football teams will meet on Sunday the 21st July in a knock-out competition to find where the real football talent lies in Pattaya. With the competition running through the complete day, the stands at the Pattaya Orphanage football stadium will resemble those in Seoul, for the “other” world cup held recently.

Whilst that may be slight overstatement of the true state of affairs, local businesses have got behind the concept of the charity football match, this being the 7th annual event. With teams from Shenanigans, Foster Wheeler, the Belgian Red Devils, the Orphanage, City Hall and Pattaya VIP’s, spectators can expect to see some fun matches with plenty of lost opportunities, missed goals, missed balls and instances of dramatic art as footballers throw themselves to the ground in excruciating agony until the opposition player gets a Yellow Card, whereupon the injured player immediately gets up “cured”.

There will really be skydiving (no, Dr. Iain didn’t make the display team), wheelchair basketball demonstrations, plus dancing and other entertainment, complete with a beer tent for Dad and food stalls with Thai and Western food for the family.

The fun event commences at 9 a.m. and concludes at 6 p.m. with shuttle busses running every hour from Mike’s Shopping Mall to the Orphanage Center and return.

Will City Hall introduce new rules, such as all players must stand in geometric lines at all times, or will the Belgians discover where the opposition goal mouth is this year? All these riveting questions and more will be answered at the Pattaya International Football tournament this Sunday. Be there! (Or we’ll kick the ball through your front windows!)

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

Stepping away from boxing for a moment, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that the Pattaya Mail is celebrating its 9th Anniversary this week. I can remember the first issue printed on paper most usually associated with the part of the body opposite the eyes. They had some hit and miss news, marginal photography, misspellings and an office up the Soi from my hotel which was not often open. An English language newspaper in Pattaya? Surely you jest. No one would have guessed that nine years later the Pattaya Mail would be the success that it is. Sometimes change is not desired. In the case of the Mail change came against all odds. It came one step at a time. She’s now a classy lady, all dressed up in vibrant color and invited to all the best functions. The Square Ring is proud to be part of her wardrobe. How times have changed. Happy Anniversary.

As I pen this piece for the Pattaya Mail I do so with a heavy heart. The great American Pastime (Baseball) is going on strike, their all star game was stopped cause they ran out of players, the Tramp singing the National Anthem dressed like someone in the Pattaya Gay Pride Parade forgot the words and now comes the news that Lennox Lewis will retire as heavyweight champion. Where are “Kool and the Gang” when you need them? It’s a “Celebration”. Monkey House, Tim, Paul, Scot, Doug, Ned and Mr. Brook set the punters up with a round on me. “Sure, put it on my tab.” To rid the world of baseball (as we know it today) and Lennox Lewis in one “fell swoop” is the daily double of life. It’s 20 baht Kosters, no bar fines, “I love you all my heart” without a family and no closing hours. It’s paradise in Pattaya.

Last Saturday Lennox Lewis said that he’s gone if he doesn’t pocket $30 million for another Mike Tyson fight. “People don’t want to see that again because of the way I destroyed him. It’s up to the TV companies - if they don’t pay $30 million, I will retire.” Hang in there Lennox and hang’em up. Best thing that could happen to boxing. The heavyweight division will be left with the Wladimir Klitichklo (39-1), a 32-0-1 Kirk Johnson (who will beat John Ruiz for his title on July 28th), David Tua (40-3), Chris Byrd (35-2), Evandler Holyfield (38-5-2) and Audley Harrision who won his last. With Trinidad retiring and saying, “I always said the day I say I’m retiring I really mean it,” it’s that time for new blood. Now when Vernon Forrest (34-0) again whips Shane Mosley (38-1) on Sunday Pattaya Time for the WBC Welter title the landscape of boxing will have gone through a dramatic change of scenery. Who would have thunk it?

Without a doubt one of the toughest little guys in boxing is IBF Superbantam champion Manny Pacquiao (34-2-1). He made his first trip to the USA a winning one when as the underdog he whacked out Champion Lehlohcnolo Ledoasa in 6 rounds for the crown. His second defense could have been a disaster, as his stupid management put him in with noted dirty fighter Aparito Sanchaz. Fight stopped with both bleeding like someone getting a Tattoo with a ten-penny nail. Next he put the hammer to veteran Jorge Eliecer Julio (44-2-0) in 2 on the undercard of Tyson-Lewis. Now fighting as the Champion for the first time in his native Philippines (either Manila or Saipan) he’s inviting Thai Fabbrakob Rakkitgym (35-2-0) into his house for a meeting on September 21. Only 26 years old, Rakkitgym has been fighting since his teen years and just might be the best test yet for the budding star. Odds are great that the third man in the ring will be Pattaya’s frequent visitor Bruce McAllister. A Thai winning in the Philippines? Could happen.

Wayne McCullough, everyone’s favorite Irish fighter, especially the paddy’s at the Classroom, has finally gotten, in hand, his boxing license from the BBBC. With that out of the way and Johnny Tapia probably out of his summer date with the Prince (aka LECJ) McCullough vs. Naseem in Dublin. How you like them apples?

Mikael Andersson wins the IPGC Inaugural Emergency Golf Classic

It is difficult to determine which was more beautiful, the 42 points that Mikael Andersson amassed to win the Overall Championship of the newest entry into the Pattaya golf scene, the IPGC’s Emergency Golf Classic, or the numerous “nurses” from the Emergency A-Go-Go on Soi Pattayaland 2 that graced the Green Valley course last Friday. Mikael broke from the gate with a brilliant 25 Stableford points on the front side and held it together with 17 on the back.

Jim Brackett, already the holder of the 2002 Classroom Charity Classic, gallantly tried to complete the coveted A-Go-Go double by shooting a 77, good for 37 points off his 6 handicap. His chagrin was tempered when he garnered both the Low Gross and “A Flight” Champion trophies. Jim was joined on the victory podium by Duncan Lee, who ruled “B Flight” with 39 Stableford points and by Rabbit Champion Morton Esseth who had 40. Morton, whose handicap was 29 and thus just over the maximum for B flight, will undoubtedly be ineligible for the Rabbit division in the future, as his handicap should drop after his fine effort.

The awards ceremony, held back at the Emergency A-Go-Go, was presided over by owners Stan Fry, Pete Stonebridge and some guy named Keith. The trophies were elegant, the prizes numerous and the buffet tantalizing, thus concluding a fun day for all. There is every indication that future Emergency Golf Classics will be much-anticipated events.

Maren and Noonit win Shenanigans July Scramble

by Mike Franklin

Maren Panthong and Noonit Tawapee scrambled a net 66.4 to win Shenanigans July Pairs Scramble held at Pattaya Country Club. The inevitable Clive Bruce and George Jackson claimed the runners-up spot with a 68.6, closely followed by Im and Ray Woodruffe returning a 68.8 beating Usa Chaiyusit and Amphiw Rimgnam on count back.

The Woodruffes were clearly on form as Im claimed her customary near pin on the par three sixteen and Ray sank both the long putts on the ninth and eighteenth. The other near pins were claimed by visitors Graham and Alex Ramsay and Ed Rudkin.

Maren Panthong and Noonit Tawapee scrambled a net 66.4 to win Shenanigans July Pairs Scramble held at Pattaya Country Club.

The fairways and greens were in good shape and the weather stayed dry, overcast and pleasantly cool due to a strong breeze. The usual apr่s-golf took place back at Shenanigans and the newcomers to the fortnightly outing were duly welcomed, namely, Graham and Alex Ramsay, Ed Rudkin, Joe St.Laurent, Graham Davis, Amphiw Rimgnam, George Davis, and Ning Fletcher.

Gentleman Barry conquers Khao Kheow

P.S.C. Golf from The Cafe Kronborg

Monday 8th July Pattaya Country Club (Stroke Play)

Amid gale force winds Pattaya Country Club hosted a stroke play competition in one flight. Dr Hans Van Probst took first with a net 70, Wayne Koch was second with a net 71, Ebrahim was third with a net 72, and Dave Richardson fourth with a net 75 on count back over Barry Kerr and Jim Flanagan. It appears that heavy maintenance is going to start on some of the greens.

Thursday 11th July Khao Kheow (Stableford)

There are some people who are born to be great, some who are born to be famous, some born to be rich, but what do you call someone who was born to all the afore said, and was still too late to be Himmler’s right hand man? You call him a sadist and get him to design golf courses, in particular as far as we are concerned, Khao Kheow.

A generation of therapists have made a fortune on the shirt tails of this man, Pete Dye, and this is one course that choose how well you play it, sooner or later it’s going to jump up and bite you in the posterior. I was that man, and as such, as per Three Sisters, a prize for a total failure and last might have been a good idea.

Barry Kerr played some quiet and thoughtful golf to win the first spot with 39 points.

Even in the midst of total mayhem, a few bright shining lights always appear and don’t we like to grit our teeth and say well done (or so you should be). So it proved to be and as it happened I played with the first and second, who as my ‘game’ went down the pan, they played good golf.

The competition was decided in one flight, and that gentleman of the golf course, and Aussie, Barry Kerr played some quiet and thoughtful golf to win the first spot with 39 points. Second was the always competitive Ebrahim on 38 points. It’s always a pleasure to play golf with him. Third was Andy Bettany, playing some good golf of late. Fourth and fifth were decided on count back as both players had 35 points but Don Richardson prevailed and Jim Flanagan had to be satisfied with fifth.

Lawdy be, it's Deja'vu all over again

PSC Three Sisters Golf

Deja’ vu - Since the Three Sisters Golf began, this has never happened. The weather was the same, the winner was the same and the loser was the same. What are the odds, with 20 plus golfers participating? No doubt they would be pretty high.

With the weather cooperating, Herb I. again came in with 40 points, the same as last week. Starting on the back nine at Siam, Herb shot 2 over par for the first 9 holes. In the middle of the front nine he stumbled a bit and took two blank holes.

They did it again - for the second week in a row! Herby came in with another unbeatable 40 points at Siam CC on July 8, while Fred was still holding the bag.

Trying to catch Herb and playing in the same group was George Davis. George started slow but came on strong on the front nine finishing with 39 points, one short of the leader.

Coming in just back of the leaders were John Gibson and Bobby Clark. Both turned scores of 38 points. Bobby has now been the bridesmaid numerous times and should be making it to the top soon. He better do it soon as he is due back at work shortly.

A mistake was almost made on the bag holder’s position. As the cards rolled in, it was thought that Eddie Rudkin and Paul Shortino were going to fight it out for the bottom spot with 26 points. As it was, Niall McCarty was sitting quietly on the side with his card in his pocket with 23 points. Sorry to say but Niall was not the bag holder for the week. Along came Fred Theobald and he again snatched the bag with 21 points. One stroke better than last week.

Again fun was had by all - Don’t know what happened to Elvis but his truck was seen zooming past caddy shack two. Someone mentioned that he might have been the bag holder for the week but we never found out as his truck was going too fast.

Dave Lee comes good at last

IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven

Monday 8th July Khao Kheow
(Stroke play)

1st: Yazuo Suzuki, 68

2nd: Ray Matti, 69 cb9 35.5

3rd: Trevor Schirmer, 69 cb9 38.5

4th: Bob Lindborg, 70

5th: Christopher Davisson, 71 cb9 34.5

6th : Moe Deverdenne, 71 cb9 35.5

As usual with all the competitions played, due to the excellent condition of the course at Khao Kheow there was a large contingent of golfers teeing up to contest the honours for the day. They were not disappointed again and although the wind blew a few of the competitors a little off course, and many times into the numerous water hazards, the scores reflected the conditions, allowing the straight hitters to score well.

They were led by Yazuo, who is going through a purple patch at the moment, and shot a very creditable 4 under to keep Ray and Trevor at bay over the last three holes. They were closely followed by Bob, who in turn edged ahead of Chris and Moe, the latter playing his last game before returning to work.

The twos were shared between Graham Davis and Yazuo.

Prior to the prize giving Richard Livingston, the resident PGA professional, welcomed new member Gordon Millar from Scotland and welcomed back Graham Davis also from Scotland and Gary Welch on parole from his sentence in Korea.

Wednesday 10th July Green Valley (Bogey)

1st: Malcolm Clare, 1 up cb9 3 up

2nd: Serge Straeten, 1 up cb9 2 up

3rd: Trevor Schirmer, 1 up cb9 all square

4th: Richard Lyne, 1 up cb9 1 down

5th: Bob Lindborg, 2 down cb9 1 up

6th: Christopher Davisson, 2 down cb9 all square

7th: Mo Bertrand, 2 down cb9 1 down

The Green Valley ground staff was in the process of preparing the course for a competition to be held later in the week, and with all the greens cored and sanded it made for very unusual conditions, which had a negative impact on the scores.

Malcolm made the best of the conditions after a slow start in which he found himself 2 down on the front nine but stormed back over the inward half to record three up against old man par having won the last four holes. This was enough to ensure he would comfortably win the count back for first place with only Serge pressing him to the last hole.

Bob and Chris took their second podium places for the week with Mo rounding out the final position.

The twos pool was shared between Serge Straeten and Brian Kelly. Back at The Haven, Richard welcomed new member Tony DeBono and welcomed back Rupert Jeffrey, both from Australia.

Friday 12th July
Siam Country Club (Stableford)

1st: Al Rolnik, 38 points

2nd: Dave Lee, 37

3rd: Chris John, 36

4th: Stephen Beard, 35

After the practice on the very slow greens in the previous competition, Siam proved to be a little easier than normal with most of the field performing close to their handicaps.

Although “Big Al” took the winner’s trophy, the day belonged to Dave Lee, who shot the best round of his life to record 37 points and break a hundred for the very first time, and along the way recording a five pointer, courtesy of his two net zero on the 12th hole. Dave has been struggling to come to terms with the diabolical game but still steadfastly refuses to practice in the firm belief that natural talent will out in the end. Could this be the start of the long awaited results of this optimism? Only time will tell. At least he has the rest of the crowd pulling for him, with much advice being given and a little being taken.

Chris “Pathfinder” John and “The Doc” rounded out the final placings having flagged towards the finishing line.

Richard welcomed back Doug Maiko from the USA before presenting the prizes. The twos were shared between Phil Groves, Dave Lee and Doug Maiko.

Robert breezes through Banpakong

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker

The Riverside golf course at Banpakong must be one of the finest courses in the region. The immaculate fairways and consistently smooth greens are a joy to play and so it was on Tuesday, 9th July, when the Bunker Boys visited for their weekly stroke play event.

In the opinion of all the participants the day would prove to be one of the most pleasant golfing experiences imaginable. A steady strong breeze blew all day, and the golfers who could control the ball benefited immensely.

In division one the Bunker’s most consistent golfer at present, Alan Alexander, powered his way to the top with a fine level par round, matching the control of Japanese golfer Yazuo Suzuki to share the top prize. One shot behind was the ever steady George Meigh, on net 73.

The best scores of the day were recorded in division two where Sweden’s Robert Knutsson belied his handicap with an impressive three-under par net 69, pursued all the way by Kevin Wilson. Kevin should have been five miles high at the time but his lost passport gave him the opportunity to fly around the course in one under par instead. Third place was shared between Mikael Andersson, Gordon McKnight and Bryn Jones, all firing net 77’s.

John Hughes and Michael Welsh both recorded birdies to earn a share of the Bunker Super Sawng award and Mr Loy found that his game had deserted him completely, so that even driving beyond the ladies’ tees was a challenge and his woeful performance earned him the Bunker Banana Booby for the worst score of the day. The enduring memories of the day will not be the duffed shots, the missed putts or the wind-driven slices and hooks, but the beauty of the course on the riverside at Banpakong.

Banglamung Home for the Elderly organizes annual Petong competition

England wins the World Cup

This weekend saw the second ever Bowling World Cup held at The Bowling Green Pattaya. There were teams from 6 different countries, even Holland (they needed to play in at least one World Cup0.

The first day of play was tense and tempers flared as most of the hot favorites were knocked out. The second and final day was even better than the first. Holland and Scotland lost in the semi finals, leaving two teams to battle it out in a spectacular final.

It all came down to one man, the David Beckham of the bowling green, Steve (Mohamad) Lake, The only similarity to David Beckham is the terrible hair cut and the lack of it. He played like a man possessed (I know he is). In the end, England claimed the final game 28 to 8.

Everyone, including “don’t be short postman” Peter played well. The losing finalists have asked not to mention their names, so Peter, George and Ned we shall leave you unnamed, unsung and un-winning.

The bowlers are all looking forward to the next World Cup, which will be sooner than one might think. So polish your bowls and get down to The Bowling Green to practice.
