The Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Elfi Seitz
The romance of the three kingdoms is a beautiful old
Chinese legend that actually deals with history.
The
great new “Samok - The Romance of the Three Kingdoms” show at the
Horseshoe Point Resort and Country Club.
An older and a young man recruit the lady of their heart
and finally fight for her; which leads one to death while the other one may
bring her home. It is, despite the bloody end, a tender history, which
touches the hearts of all those who read the book. This age-old Chinese
legend (there is book in the English language in Pattaya) is still discussed
today by magazine-reading clubs, and by scholars at regular meetings.
Because everyone sees this history with different eyes,
each interprets it differently, contributing different light and
understanding. For many Chinese it is a must to read this history at least
once. It is even maintained that someone who reads this book three times
collects so much wisdom and instruction that normal humans do not dare any
longer to address him.
The Horseshoe Point Resort made it its duty to record the
tradition of this history. That prompted owners Chaikiri and Chainarin
Srifuengfung to create their theme park, The Romance of Three kingdoms. Now
the tradition and romance of those long past days lives again with a
splendid show.
The sumptuous costumes, designed after original models
from that time, the beautiful horses, decorated and proudly walking in the
arena, in addition the lighting effects and the marvelous gentle music of
artists such as Verdi, results in indeed a fantastic show.
One feels carried back to those old times during the Chinese dynasties.
The show takes place now regularly in the Horseshoe Point and fans of
classical dressage can come to watch the riders’ expertise.
German community celebrates beginning of carnival
Stefan Kopp
On November 11th more than 200 fun loving tourists and
residents of Pattaya met in the Berliner Bistro in Soi Potisarn to start
zestfully into the carnival time. Landlord Wolfgang Bordt had invited all to
a free breakfast buffet, so there was no doubt the bistro would be packed
again.
Let the
fun begin! Landlord Wolfgang Bordt in his sailor uniform (2nd right) with
two prisoners, a Thai-German police officer and a clown declare the opening
of carnival season at Berliner Bistro.
The most popular fancy outfit once again proved to be the
“beer drinking tourist” with his typical short trousers, slippers and
the mandatory glass of beer in front of his mouth. Some of the guests,
however, arrived in their original prisoners’ gear. Nevertheless the most
beautiful dress was presented by the landlord himself. In his sailor uniform
and with his typical whistle he guided the event.
The morning pint started after the first round of beer
with an assault on the buffet which already 10 minutes later was completely
empty. After the meal started, the colorful cultural began with German music
and charming dance presentations from the pretty “ladies” of the Bistro.
These came, like always, from Alcazar and captivated the guests not only
with their grace and beauty, but also with a great cabaret show.
Unfortunately the event was overshadowed by a scandal.
The two prisoners, No. 471-1 and No. 471-2, were arrested by a Thai-German
policeman and were pilloried.
Dancing, singing, and with a lot of fun and many beers
the guests enjoyed their stay in the Berliner Bistro until the late
afternoon.

Royal Cliff Beach Resort welcomes nearly 1,000 participants to the
1st Asian Pediatric Disease Congress
Songklod Kaewvisit
The Royal Cliff Beach Resort recently hosted the 1st
Asian Pediatric Disease Congress. Nearly 1,000 participants attended the
congress on November 10th. Deputy Prime Minister Chaturon Jaisaeng presided
over the opening ceremony. The Pediatric Disease Organization of Thailand,
led by Doctor Somsak Lohlekha, the organization president, hosted this
first-ever congress.
Deputy
Prime Minister Chaturon Jaisaeng and Dr Somsak Lohlekha, president of the
Pediatric Disease Organization of Thailand, together cut the ribbon at the
beginning of the seminar.
Dr. Somsak said that Thailand is considered the leading
country in Asia, specializing in mother-to-child transmission diseases,
including HIV. He said that Thailand also has the most advanced technology
and updated research regarding these diseases. The resulting decline in the
number of infected children shows that Thailand is doing well in both
prevention and medical treatment for patients.
Dr. Somsak said that Thailand is also well known for
effective treatment for dengue (hemorrhagic) fever (a disease spread by
mosquitoes) and other expertise in medical research that other countries in
Asia are interested in learning about.
The congress was organized for the first time to gather
doctors from Asia and Europe together to give them a chance to exchange
ideas and present their research to the audience.
Dr. Somsak added that the congress was a vehicle used to bring doctors
who work in similar fields together so they can exchange information.
However, the meeting will also encourage various departments of health care
units in Thailand to increase awareness, focus on disease prevention and
promote health consciousness amongst the local population, especially toward
transmittable diseases.
Pattaya Gay Festival soars past the 5 million baht level in fund raising for charities
With just over one month to go before the end of this
year’s activities, Pattaya Gay Festival has raised over 5 million baht for
local charities since their inception 2 years ago. Their first year produced
more than 2.7m baht - way above their initial expectations - and with 2.4m
baht already raised in their second year with a number of events remaining,
there are high expectations of exceeding that total.
The PGF - created towards the end of 2000 by a group of
Pattaya’s gay business owners getting together - holds a series of
functions including dinners, parties, and sporting events throughout each
year to raise the funds, with a proportion of the ticket sales going to
their charitable fund, bolstered by the proceeds of raffles held at most of
these events. The vast majority of the raffle prizes are donated by the
participating businesses and others, allowing almost all of the ticket sales
to go to the fund. Each of the businesses involved also contribute, at the
beginning of each year, a “sponsorship” fee (at three levels of 10,000,
20,000 and 30,000 baht) and these contributions more than cover the expenses
of the year’s activities, allowing 100 percent of all monies raised to go
straight through to the fund.
The high profile of the PGF activities, and the
highlighting of the charities to be helped, has also attracted a large
number of individual donations, some of which have been at the hundreds of
thousands baht level.
The PGF chairman commented, “These results have been
far beyond our wildest dreams and makes the hard work by those involved
really worth the effort. The charities we support - especially Heartt 2000 -
have benefited to a huge extent, enabling them to continue their good work
in and around the Pattaya area, and all involved with the festival are
delighted that it has been so successful. This success will motivate us to
continue our efforts in the years ahead.”
For the first year two main charities were designated by
the festival, firstly the Naklua Drug Rehabilitation Center, where extensive
improvements to their facilities were desperately needed, and Heartt 2000.
“Heartt” stands for “Help Ensure Aids Rescue in Thailand Together”,
and is run by Dr Philippe Seure, a French doctor who has dedicated himself
to helping local people infected with the HIV/AIDS virus, and who are not in
a position to afford the cost of the expensive medication vital for their
survival. To date Dr Philippe - who works under the auspices of Dr. Jureerat,
director of the Chonburi Public Hospital, has helped more than 550 such
patients, and undoubtedly many lives have been saved.
In their second year, with the needs of the NDRC largely
met, the festival decided to concentrate on Heartt 2000, where the need was
an ongoing one, and to date this charity has received just over 2.8m baht
from the festival and its supporters, with more than a further 1m baht
pledged. There have also been a number of smaller donations to other local
causes.
This year’s efforts by the festival come to an end in
early December, but still remaining are a beach party at Jomtien on November
29th, a gala dinner at Bruno’s Restaurant on November 30th, a “Walk for
Life” parade along Beach Road on 1st December (which is World Aids Day),
and a final street party in Boyz Town on 2nd December. Planning will then
start for the 2003 Festival.
“A lot of work is being, and has been, put in by many
individuals to make the festival as successful has it has been,” says the
PGF chairman, “but to witness the good that the money raised does, is
reward enough to all concerned. The response of Pattaya’s gay community -
both residents and tourists - has been marvelous, and this work will go
on.”
