PCEC welcomes back personnel from Phyathai Hospital, Sriracha
This week, Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) was pleased to
welcome back personnel from the Phyathai Hospital, Sriracha to the Sunday,
December 2nd meeting at Henry J. Beans.
Flu
vaccinations administered at the PCEC.
The week’s MC, Richard Silverberg started the proceedings by confirming that
the nurses from Phyathai Hospital would be providing flu vaccinations for
those that required them during the meeting for the cost of 550 baht. A
large number of those present took advantage of this offer.
Assisted by Gavin Waddell, head of the International Relations and Marketing
Department, Richard introduced the main speaker of the morning from the
Phyathai Hospital: Dr Manoch Phantongwitiyakul who provided a detailed
account of the benefits of colonoscopy which detects the presence of colon
cancer. Dr Manoch recommended that everyone over the age of 50 should
consider having a colonoscopy carried out as no symptoms may be present even
if there is no family history of its occurrence. A colonoscopy should be
carried out every 4 to 5 years. There is a 90% chance of colon cancer being
cured if it can be detected at an early stage.
The latest techniques were described, particularly CT colonography. This
entails an examination using a high speed x-ray computer which is most
useful for detecting the early development of cancerous conditions before
they develop. Data is collected to create both 2D and 3D clear
representations which are obtained totally painlessly and enables a more
accurate diagnosis to be carried out.
Further advantages of CT colonography are that no invasive investigation is
required, other abdominal organs can be viewed during the process, and the
examination can be completed within 15 to 20 minutes.
Gavin Waddell returned to announce some special offers at the Phyathai
Hospital of a colonoscopy at the reduced price of 14,000 baht, with biopsy
(invasive) if it was carried out at the time of a health check costing 3800
baht, or for the above mentioned CT 64 slice coronary examination at 7,200
baht, again with the health check up program.
Phyathai Hospital will also be running a special discounted program in
honour of His Majesty the King which provides a comprehensive health check
up for 2,280 baht. This program will run from December 1 - 31 and the
special discounts on colonoscopy can be used with this program also.
Chairman Richard Smith announced that, in addition to the numerous club
trips, a shopping trip to Bangkok had been suggested and was being planned.
Drew Noyes announced that a rare opportunity to view many previously unseen
photos of HM The King and the Royal Family would be available from December
12 to 23 at the Eastern Centre of Art and Culture, Burapha University,
Bangsaen. Invitations to the opening ceremony were distributed.
The conductors of the regular Open Forum were at full strength as both Bob
L’Etoile and Sig Sigworth were on hand to take their fair share of the jokes
and jibes! As always it provided an opportunity for questions about living
in Thailand with an emphasis on Pattaya to be asked. For more information
regarding, not only PCEC Sunday meetings but also the varied mid week
activities, please see the Community Happenings section of Pattaya Mail or,

anniversary their founder of Sikhism
Thai-Sikh followers gather to
chant on the 538th birthday of the First Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Members of the Thai Sikh community in Pattaya gathered to observe the
538th birth anniversary of the First Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, which
corresponds to the 15th waxing moon in the 12th lunar month.
This year the anniversary fell on November 24, with the ceremony beginning on
November 22. Readings began at 6:30 a.m. from the book of Sri Guru Granth Sahib,
continuing nonstop for 48 hours, although the chanters were changed every one or
two hours.
November 24 was the last day of the ceremony, with followers gathering to chant
and scatter rose petals in front of the book in a symbol of blessing, before
gathering for a communal meal.
Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh Faith, was born in Nankana Sahib near
Lahore, now in Pakistan, in 1469 and breathed his last in 1539 at the age of 70.
There were nine other gurus, or prophets, that consecutively followed his
lineage, all receiving divine revelations but only under his name Nanak, without
attributing any such revelatory passages to their own names. This culminated in
the 11th guruship being bestowed on the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, which has been
called the Mona, meaning the silent guru, being in book form.
