A race for the adventurous

The 4th North Face River Kwai
Trophy adventure race
takes place on February 28.
CMM reporters
Adventure racing in Asia, growing more popular every year, is set to
receive a boost with the 4th edition of the North Face River Kwai trophy
event, which takes place amidst the stunning natural scenery of Kanchanaburi
province later this month. 150 national and international teams are expected
to take part in the event, which is being sponsored by North Face, the
Tourism Authority of Thailand and Outdoor Unlimited.
Adventure racing is becoming highly popular in Thailand itself, with 40% of
the number of competitors being residents of the kingdom, up from 15% two
years ago.
The North Face River Kwai trophy race will involve teams of 2 competing over
4 disciplines; running, cycling, kayaking and swimming, with the
participants traversing the jungle, kayaking and swimming in the River Kwai
(wearing life jackets, just in case!), and mystery tests will be added to
spice up the proceedings.
There will be 5 separate race categories including Men, Women, Mixed,
Masters Men (over 80 years combined) and Seniors Men (over 100 years
combined).
The province of Kanchanaburi itself is perfect for this kind of activity,
with lakes, forests, mountains, caves, natural beauty and a strong sense of
history. The contest will take place on February 28 at the Sayoke Resort and
Spa.
Special rates for Thai teams are offered and a free shuttle bus will be
available from Bangkok to the venue and back.
More information about the race can be found at www.riverkwaitrophy.com or
call the event organisers at 02 718 9581-2.
Pattaya United qualify
for Queen’s Cup play-offs

Pattaya United line up before
a group match
at this year’s Queen’s Cup tournament.
PM Reporters
Pattaya United scored a resounding 5-1 victory over the Royal Thai
Air force last Sunday to secure a place in the latter stages of this year’s
Queen’s Cup football tournament. This followed on from a 2-1 victory over
Port of Thailand and a goalless draw with BEC Tero Sasana to see them head
their group on 7 points.
Twenty teams took part in the preliminary stages of the competition over the
period 1-8 of February with just the top two teams from each group
progressing to the play-offs. The final round of matches will be played in
Sriracha beginning this Friday and lasting all next week.
Pattaya United’s first match is against the Royal Thai Army this coming
Saturday with the kick-off at 6:30 p.m. They will then take on Samut
Songkhram FC on Monday and play a final qualifying game on Wednesday against
Hallelujah FC. The semi-finals will take place on Friday, with the final
being held on Sunday, February 22.
The winners of this year’s Queen’s Cup will receive 300,000 baht in prize
money while the runners-up will take home half that amount.
Thailand scoops the pool at Asia-Pacific sailing championships
Peter Cummins
Perhaps the headline should read, “scoops the sea”, as the
Kingdom’s boys and girls, with brilliant sailing and strong finishes on
the last day of the ASEAN Optimist and the Byte CII Asia-Pacific
Championships, took out the top places.

young Thai sailors hoist the ASEAN Challenge Cup after a dominating
display at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club last week. (Photo/Malee
Whitcraft)
In the two regattas, raced concurrently off the Royal Varuna Yacht Club
in South Pattaya from January 31 until February 7, their world-class
performance has placed Thailand into the top echelons of yacht racing
world-wide and bodes well for the future of the sport in both the
Kingdom and the region.
In fact, it was a Thai “whitewash” of the total event, with Thai team #1
also winning the team racing competition with a perfect zero score
(6-0).
It was basically perfect weather during the week-long regatta. On-shore
westerlies, with northern and southern shifts, a moderate (av. 8-knots)
wind and a slight sea, gave the 86 young sailors, from seven
Asia-Pacific countries, all they could hope for in one of the world’s
best sailing areas – the Gulf of Thailand.
With superb race management, the committee was able to conduct three
races a day for the first three days and then two per day thereafter. It
was hard to tell who was more tired at the end of the gruelling hours on
the sea - the race committee or the youngsters. Of course, the young
people won the day!
It was the daunting Thai sub-teen girls, Noppakao Poonpat and Jittiwa
Thanawitwilat, first and third respectively in the ASEAN Optimist
regatta, with exactly the same pattern in the Byte Division, except it
was Thai boys this time: Byte world champion Keerati Bualong, and
Natthawut Paenyaem were first and third respectively.
Taking the Opti class first; Malaysia’s Ahmad Syukri Abdul Aziz was
second in class, with the first Singaporean (and girl) Kimberly Lim in
sixth place. Eri Fukasawa was Japan’s first in 12th place, Myanmar’s
first sailor, Thiri Ye Win, came in 22nd place and little Sri Lankan
lady Dani-Elle Svendson, was first for her country in 42nd place
overall.
In the Byte CII class, Singapore’s Terence Choo, after a valiant tussle
with the Thai boys finished second, with a cluster of Singaporeans
filling fourth to seventh places. Indonesia’s finest, Boby M H Sanjaya,
was 22nd overall and Myanmar’s best (and first lady) was Khin Nyo Lynn
in 24th place.
It was so refreshing to see all these young people, their managers and
their supporters, smiling, competing and enjoying life, after the gloom
and doom surrounding the big world outside.
Flag Commodore of the host club, the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, Kevin
Whitcraft presided over the most impressive closing ceremony, in the
glow of a glorious Pattaya sunset.
“The Royal Thai Navy, the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand and our
own Royal Varuna Yacht Club, of which His Majesty the King is our Royal
Patron, have been delighted to welcome 53 young people from six regional
countries, to join our own 33-strong Thai team, in a week of superb
sailing, fun and camaraderie,” said Kevin.
“I know that the teams from Myanmar, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia,
Singapore and Sri Lanka have enjoyed our own people, our hospitality and
our culture,” he added.
The generous sponsors who supported this regatta; Oskabatt, B-ing,
Speedo, Suniture, Coca Cola and Nam Thip, were joined by the paramedics
of the Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, who were constantly alert and ready to
administer to any mishap. Their very presence instilled confidence in
the boys and girls competing – and, perhaps to some of the older folks
rocking out there on the bay, on the committee vessels, the rescue craft
and the jury boat.
Fierce
competition in the Byte CII class. (Photo/Malee Whitcraft)
Kevin also acknowledged the Royal Varuna manager and staff and the many
volunteers, out there on the water for long hours.
“Officers from the Royal Thai Navy and our own club have conducted a
fine regatta, worthy of the high international standards demanded of
such an event, while simultaneously ensuring the safety and well-being
of all, especially our visitors,” Kevin added.
And it was not all sailing either, under the tutelage of Malee
Whitcraft, an army of young people were early to rise and run to the top
of the adjoining Buddha Hill, overlooking Pattaya, each day to pay
respects to Admiral Prince Abhakara Kiartiwongse (1880-1923) whose
statue adorns the Royal Thai Navy station. The Prince is recognized as
the “Father of the Royal Thai Navy.”
No doubt, the Prince would have been pleased to know that the Thai
sailors, down below, were the masters of the Gulf.
And the Royal Varuna Yacht Club now prepares for the next big
international event. Sandwiched in between a very vigorous club racing
schedule are the Laser 4.7 Pre-World Championships, with upward of 100
competitors. This, however, will be a mere “curtain-raiser” to the
really BIG one next year: the Laser 4.7 World Championships, also to be
held at Varuna.
Thus, the sun set (literally) on a superb week of sailing, fun and
camaraderie among Asia’s neighbours, and Thailand goes up a notch on all
counts.

Bruneau makes successful return to St. Andrews
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, February 2, Crystal Bay –
Stableford
With the economic problems here at the moment, and a reduction in green
fees at this course for the IPGC, we will all be supporting this venue
and Mountain Shadow over the coming months.
Billie
Sampson and Srithong Tann enjoy Olaf’s birthday party at Siam Cats.
There were ten groups out today in our normal two-divisional stableford
competition, with four prizes in each division up for grabs. The A and B
Nines were selected and these two courses were enjoyed by everyone.
In the second division Rudi Schaefer pipped Harry Cowling for fourth
place on a back nine count back of 16/14 after they both finished with
31 points. In third, one point better, was Jimmy Johnson, and in second
place came Gordon Everingham who just missed out on the top spot after
losing a 16/14 count back to Roger Ribbins after they both finished with
33 points.
Mam Morel’s ever-improving game was good enough to claim division 1
honours with 40 points - there is talk in the bar that she should give
her other half a few lessons. Timo Ahvenainen came in second place with
37 points, newly returned Bryan Rought was third with 35 and in fourth
was Peter Seward with 34.
In the 2’s in Division 1 there was a rollover from Eastern Star and
Srithong Tann’s smile said it all as she birdied the 4th on the B course
to scoop the pot. Russell Benson and Fred Duffy shared the spoils in
Division 2 after the both birdied the 8th on the A course.
Near pin prizes went to (Div 1) Timo Ahvenainen, Tony Duthie, Kari
Kuprainen and Mathew Swire; and (Div 2) Russell Benson, Jim Connelly,
Bernd Floethner and Roger Ribbins.
It was all back to Siam Cats for the presentation at 6 p.m. followed by
a free buffet and live band which was provided by Faa and Olaf as it was
his birthday. Many thanks for this from all of us. The food was supplied
by Simple Simons (a couple of doors down) and was as good as ever.
The golfers all contributed towards Olaf’s present, a gourmet 4-course
champagne dinner at Manhattans for both of them on St. Valentines night
with a complimentary limousine pick up included. There were some bad
heads the next day (or so I was informed.)
Wednesday, February 4,St. Andrews – Stableford
After last week’s successful IPGC tournament, there were many
asking to play this course again. It is not normally on Jomtien Golf’s
schedule because of the cost, but with negotiated green fees we managed
to take 32 players here today.
An amazing 40 points won Division 1 for Jean Bruneau, with Barry Winton
coming in second two points behind and Harry Riley finishing third with
35. ‘Count back’ Burnie Sinclair’s 35 points garnered him Division 2’s
top honours with Fred Duffy in second place one point behind and John
Harvey third with 31.
There were no rollovers in either division in the 2’s competition, much
to the disappointment of the four players in Division 1 who shared the
pot; Barry Winton on the 5th and 17th, Kari K on the 17th and Raivo
Velsberg on the same hole. Jukka Sorvali recorded the only ‘2’ in the
second division on the 5th hole.
Near pin prizes went to (Div 1) Timo Ahvenainen, Arthur Hancock, Peter
Pedder and Barry Winton; and (Div 2) Russell Benson, Journi and Jukka.
There were many comments afterwards as to the similarity of this course
to Black Mountain in Hua Hin, where this year we will play our annual
‘Golden Elephant’ tour, a four-course stableford competition, commencing
on May 11. Details and costs will be up in the bar in the next few
weeks.
Friday, February 6, Eastern Star – Stableford
Four late cancellations and seven additions the night before
made it a slightly chaotic line up for the 12 groups out this morning,
but as everyone now knows, if you register after the tee planning the
previous evening you will be at the back of the field.
In the stableford competition 41 points was the winning score in both
divisions. Harry Riley took Division 1 ahead of Paddy Wilson in second
on 38, Arthur Hancock third on 34, and Timo Ahvenainen fourth on 31.
Timo beat Ya Riley on a 15/13 back nine count back.
No mention of luck of the Irish, Cully Monks won Division 2 by five
points from Tom Breslin in second, Miss Oam came next on 35, and Terry
Cowell beat the old man on a 19/18 count back after they both finished
with 34 points for fourth. Not surprising really, after 10 days of
freedom before the other half returns.
Fond farewells were said to Barry Stirling and wife who will be back in
late spring, and also to Georges Faber, two months back in the cold
Luxemburg climate before a return here in April.
City gain revenge for earlier upset
MBMG International League 2008/09
Paul Frain
Pattaya City played the British Club last weekend in what was
essentially a top v bottom encounter: The Bangkok team were lying third
bottom of the league while Pattaya were top, courtesy of the Londoner
beating previous leaders Cosmos 1-0.
City went into this match looking for revenge after having been on the wrong
end of a 2-1 upset earlier in the season, and they began the game in
threatening fashion but British Club’s defence held firm.
The first real attack was by the British Club right winger who beat five
City players before shooting wide with the goal at his mercy. It was a
golden opportunity missed and a big let off for City. Soon after, another
British Club attack led to a shot just scraping the top of the Pattaya City
crossbar.
These early scares seemed to joint City into action and after putting some
pressure on the British Club defence, they luckily took the lead when their
opponents failed to clear their area and the ball dropped fortuitously to
City’s Alastair Paterson who beat the last defender before slotting it home
to make it 1-0.
The goal spurred City on and soon after Carlos Old had a shot brilliantly
headed off the line to stop a certain goal. The British Club counter
attacked and forced City’s keeper into making a superb save diving to his
right to stop a goal bound effort.
Just as half-time was approaching, Pattaya managed to double their lead when
Alastair Peterson played a delicate chip over the British Club defence
straight to City’s full back Wuttichai Lerkeatjarus, who chested the ball
home for his first goal of the season.
In the second half City looked for a quick goal to kill the game off and
they nearly managed it when a shot from the Pattaya full back was
brilliantly tipped onto the bar and over by the opposition keeper.
The British Club responded in fine style and played most of the second
period camped n City’s half of the field, but City’s keeper Anuruk
Ananthakul and the defence stood firm and the Bangkok outfit were unable to
find a way back into the match.
The final whistle sounded with City having secured another vital three
points and maintained their position at the top of the league.
City’s next match is on Saturday February 14 against Woodstock in Bangkok
with kick off at 4 p.m.

4th Liam Horgan (13) 38pts
Div 2
1st Paul Mades (18) 38pts
2nd Mark Reuben (18) 32pts
3rd David Exley (18) 32pts
4th Saen O’Brian (17) 28pts
For the first outing of the month we went to St Andrews on February 2.
They are offering deals these days at this course that are not to be
missed and it guaranteed a good turnout on the day.
Saturday’s
winners: Peter Morris, Steve Carlton and Larry Simpson with Mrs.
Simpson.
Bruce Kusyk (a new name to me I must admit) blew the opposition away
with a great forty-two pointer and a clear two up on Ray Allison. What a
great score on this difficult course. The battle for third place in the
A division saw a count back fight between Brendan Moore and Liam Horgan,
both at thirty eight, with Brendan just edging it.
The B Division had Paul Mades heading the list at thirty-eight points, a
clear six up on second man Mark Reuben who edged it on count back over
David Exley.
There were four 2’s recorded Brendan Moore (2), Liam Horgan and Martin
Dunne.
Tuesday, February 3, Bangpra - Stableford
1st Tony Perry (15) 35pts
2nd Donald Pearson (32) 34pts
3rd Seamus Farrell (35) 34pts
4th Ted Senior (16) 34pts
5th Derek Lucas (20) 31pts
Bangpra was the venue on Tuesday and we had another fair turnout. This
is a favourite with many players these days and a good test of the game.
Scoring was kept down on the day by various things so no one found
themselves having it all their own way. Tony Perry just edged the win
with thirty-five and one back in second was Donald Pearson who took it
on count back from Seamus Farrell, both at thirty-four. On a low scoring
day it was no surprise that there were no 2’s recorded.
Thursday, February 5, Phoenix Ocean & Mountain -

Div 2
1st Neil Allison (19) 38pts
2nd Donald Pearson (32) 36pts
3rd Mark Reuben (18) 35pts
Our regular weekly outing to Phoenix was continued on Thursday and, as
always, we found this great course to be in good condition.
The organiser Fergus Brennan, it has to be said, had been having a
torrid week but he made up for it this time with a great win in the top
division, albeit on count back over Liam Horgan (he did not having much
luck on count backs this week) both at thirty seven. Jimmy Woulfe came
in third at thirty six after winning another count back tussle over Ito
Akitoshi and Richard Wakeling.
Neil Allison headed the second division with thirty-eight points; Donald
Pearson came in next for his second runner-up place of the week at
thirty-six, and Mark Reuben was third with thirty-five.
There were two 2’s from Laim Horgan and Neil Allison.
Saturday, February 7, Greenwood - Stableford
1st Peter Morris (25) 39pts
2nd Steve Carlton (8) 34pts
3rd Larry Simpson (9) 33pts
4th Brendan Moore (31) 31pts
5th Fergus Brennan (10) 31pts
Saturday was a weekend trip to Greenwood and a long day’s outing ensued
as only a late tee off was available. There was one division on the day
with five places given.
Coming in fifth place was Fergus Brennan with thirty-one points and he
was not on top of his game it has to be said, partly due to having a
fall the previous day whilst out walking. He lost out on count back to
Brendan Moore for fourth.
Larry Simpson came in third with thirty-three points (he was a little
distressed as he thought he had thirty four but there was an error on
his card), however he really cheered up when he heard that he had the
2’s all to himself.
Steve Carlton was in second place at thirty-four but the man of the day
was Peter Morris who wiped the field with a great thirty-nine pointer to
take the day. Well done Peter.

Sixteen is probably the best number for a ball pool and this was the turnout for
today. Greenwood is a good golf course in excellent condition and with the
facilities to match.
Davis Gardner and Ross Kannar hogged the technical dividends with David getting
three near pins. Ross took the other plus the longest first putt on the 18th
green. The overall average score for the day was 28.7 points.

2nd Bill Jones (29) 27pts
3rd Rob Gandley (18) 27pts
Navy still remains my favorite venue because for me there is more to a round of
golf than a round of golf. At Navy an abundance of Thailand’s fauna and flora
can been seen and enjoyed and the water reservoir and surrounding hills induces
a sense of calm in an otherwise rather hectic world.
Near pins in course order went to Dennis Jaycock, David Gardner, Terry Bayley
and Rob Gandley. Jimmy Fortune sunk the longest first putt on the 18th green, a
‘swan song’ putt because Jimmy has vowed never to ever play Navy again as a
consequence of hitting his ball into a few trees this day. The overall average
score was 26.6 points.
Note: Any golfers seeking to play with our group that wish to know about
the format please visit P J Pool Bar & Restaurant on Soi Watboonsamphan (Soi

Monday, February 2, Green Valley -
Stableford
A large group took advantage of the voucher system at Green
Valley and with the cut set at handicap 17 we had some interesting
scores.
Tony Scambler had the biggest haul of the day, scoring forty points to
take the A Flight ahead of Gerry Cooney, while Mashi edged out William
on a count back to take third spot.
There was a rare win for “Skinny” Newton in the B Flight who insists he
just had “one of those days when everything went in!” Rod Stevens
finished runner up on his last game in Thailand before his return to
WORK - moaning that he always finds his form when he’s due to go back!
Don McPherson took third place beating Geoff Hart on a count back.

Wednesday, February 4, Greenwood - Medal
On arrival at Greenwood we found the course virtually empty
and in great condition and playing a Medal round off the white tees in
their correct position we had some very good scores.
The cut was set at handicap 16 and in the B Flight Gene Plueger had the
best round of the day, shooting a fantastic six under par round
(apparently his best ever score in Thailand). John Stolarczyk made a
successful return to Pattaya by finishing runner up with a one under par
round and a shot behind on level par came Stan Watkins.
The A Flight was much closer, Mashi winning with a one under par and
there were three players tied on net 73 behind him: Paul Smith came out
on top in a count back to take second place with Geoff Cox just beating
Japanese golfer Masa to finish third and leaving Masa empty handed.
A Flight
1st Mashi Kaneta (10) net 71
2nd Paul Smith (4) net 73
3rd Geoff Cox (12) net 73
B Flight
1st Gene Plueger (21) net 66

Friday, February 6, Khao Kheow - Stableford
The Bunker Boy’s arrived at Khao Kheow today to find that we
were playing just behind the ladies playing in the LPGA Honda Classic
Tournament. The pins were set in the most difficult positions possible
and the greens were rated at 12 on the stimp meter, a tougher test of
putting you couldn’t find anywhere so only the very good golfer’s would
shine today.
“Skinny,” who was heard to say “easy game this,” followed up his win at
Green Valley on Monday with another victory to take the B Flight with a
best of the day 37 stableford points. John Stolarczyk was runner up
again and newcomer Martin Creichton crept into third place with 27
points.
The scores were more interesting in the A Flight where there was a count
back to determine all the places. “Dev” Deverall beat Geoff Parker to
take first place, both finishing with 30 points, then there were three
players tied on 29 points but it was Alan Sullivan who took third
courtesy of his 45 yard chip-in on the 18th hole.
A Flight
1st Dev Deverall (17) 30pts
2nd Geoff Parker (14) 30pts
3rd Alan Sullivan (13) 29pts
B Flight
1st Skinny Newton (28) 37pts
2nd John Stolarczyk (23) 30pts
3rd Martin Creichton (22) 27pts

All smiles at Lakeside
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
’Lakeside was the venue for the first February stableford
competition with the Pattaya Golf Society on Tuesday, Feb 3. The course was
as immaculate as ever and the weather stayed fine with a slight breeze to
comfort the walkers.
The field was divided into the usual two flights, this time at 21 and under
and scores were destined to be good on the benign course, an ideal
pipe-opener for the month.
In the top flight, Len Jones retained his current steady form to post a good
37 points for third place, missing a thirty centimeter putt for a birdie on
the eighth which would have given him a share of the win with Rick Holmes
and “Banjo” Bannister, whose 38 point scores tied the flight. Rick’s gross
of 80 was the best of the day whilst Banjo’s back nine had brought him a
remarkable twenty-three points as his game kicked into overdrive.
In the very competitive second flight, Jim Proctor, Tim Lazecki and newbie
member Jim Pickering all recorded 38 points to share the runner-up place,
but the best points round of the day was recorded by Rod Stevens, recently
the victim of a serious road accident, and the powerful Canadian golfer,
legs still swathed in bandages, posted 39 points for one of his best rounds.
The 2’s pot was shared by the ubiquitous Chris Voller and Banjo Bannister,
both birdies coming on the short par-three fifteenth, whilst Kazu Agune,
recently hero at Treasure Hill, descended to zero status and took the Booby
Bevy in fine heart.
Golf at Royal Lakeside is always a treat and to find an almost empty course
is a bonus indeed.
Big Rob’s Phoenix romp
The Pattaya Golf Society chose Phoenix Mountain and Lakes as the
venue for their first monthly merit event on Thursday, Feb 5, and found the
course dry with tight lies and slow greens. The two flights were divided at
nineteen and under and the difficulty of the course was defined by the
poorer than usual stableford scores.
In the second flight Jim Ferris shook off a series of mediocre returns to
post a steady 33-point card for third place whilst Harry Cowling and Jack
Robertson topped the flight with 35 points each.
In the top flight Peter Ditz and Stuart Thompson ranked equal third with 35
points each and for the latter it was a welcome sign of returning form after
months of inactivity with a seriously damaged shoulder. Richard “Banjo”
Bannister was second with a level par round whilst Robert Lamond shook
Phoenix’s throat with a dazzling round which contained only 21 putts and
gave him not only the best gross of the day, 72, but also the best round of
the year so far with the popular golf group. Forty-two points for Heaven’s
sake, from a six handicapper!
Needless to say Robert’s round included a birdie ‘2’, on the Lakes’ second
hole, and he shared the pot with Chris Voller, a habitual 2’s winner, but
Chris’ indiscretion in “blobbing” the final par-three won for him the Booby
Bevy.
At the end of the day Rob Lamond’s superb display had shown everyone a clean
pair of heels at Phoenix.
Happy Jack
at Treasure Hill
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Treasure Hill on Saturday, Feb 7
to playa stableford event on a course currently in excellent condition with
good fast greens.
Always a test, the course proved tough to beat in a strong breeze for the
single flight and the current form of “Banjo” Bannister held up long enough
for him to record thirty points for a share of second place with Kazuo
Takimoto, playing his first round of the year with the group and recording
the day’s best gross figures of 82. The winner was Canadian Jack Robertson
and his score of 31 points was credit to his concentration in the wind.
There were no birdie 2’s, guaranteeing a little extra spice next week and
the Booby Bevy went to Chief Frank Baker for a round which started well but
tapered off badly as the heavy golf load of his past few weeks began to take
its toll.
On days like this at Treasure Hill the golfer has to accept that the golfing
gods also take the occasional day off!
‘Bonner Rules’ at Green Valley
IPGC golf from Lewiinski’s

The “Bonner Ruling” is part of Lewiinski’s folklore. For the few that don’t
know it, it came about way back in John Emmerson’s days when our title man
won a monthly medal with a net 63 off his then 19 handicap. Problem was that
he was ‘that new bloke’ without an official IPGC handicap. So when despite a
3 shot cut, he followed it up with a 43-point victory, something had to be
done. Hence the “Bonner Ruling” that no one could win the medal on their
debut.
Since those heady days, poor Mark has seen his handicap drift from an all
time low of 13 back up to close to his original mark. Naturally his bleak
years in the wilderness attracted little sympathy from his regular playing
partners as they lined their pockets at his expense.
Taking greatest pleasure from all of this was his mate from up north, the
Principal. So you can imagine Mark’s delight as he rolled back the years to
garner Sunday’s ‘man of the match’ with a magical 41 points and so squeeze
his mate out by a point.
So the day belonged to the ‘new bloke’ “Mark “muscles Bonner, who finally
came out of his slump to win C Flight and take man of the match plaudits.
Roland Bangerter ran Mark close with a super 40 points for second and Amin
Ajit took the final place on the podium with 37 after a count back over the
club captain Eddie. Peter Ring was a shot further back waiting for any slip
ups. Let’s here it for the C Flighters.
Up in B Flight, it was about as tight as can be with three lads all tied on
40 blistering points a piece. As one would imagine, the Principal’s maths
won the flight where the longest count back in Lewiinski history shoved Vic
Hestor into second and Dave Mather into third.
Jack the Loo Bilko took command of A Flight, winning with an impressive 38
point return. Ian ‘Loose Change’ and Big Bob Patterson were locked together
one shot adrift, ‘Loose Change’ getting the count back verdict for second
and relegating Bob to third.
Back at Lewiinski’s it was like old times with the three amigos Mark, George
and Jez being tempted by the promotion girl into downing the new northern
brew. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!
Monday, February 2, Phoenix - Stableford
A Flight

B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (16) 36pts
2nd Peter Hedenbergh (18) 35pts
3rd Eiko Hayashibara (36) 32pts
Mr. Nice guy Garry Blackburne made the most of his home course to win the
day, posting a super 38 points. Pat Hannifin and the Magician needed a count
back to separate them for second as each carded 35 points: Pat got the
verdict that pushed the Magician into third place.
The President took charge of B Flight with an even par round of 36 points as
Peter Hedenbergh took second on 35. Eiko Hayashibara sneaked into third with
32 after a count back over the unlucky Roland Bangeter.
Peter Hedenbergh, Garry Blackburne, Colm Mullen and Ben O’Connor shared the
2’s pot.

B Flight
1st John Calvert (17) 37pts
2nd Eddie Beilby (17) 36pts
3rd Jim Bell (20) 35pts
Chairman Mao, played what must be his favourite course, Crystal Bay, and
again brought home the bacon, with a super 40 points. Jack “Wacko” Grinvold
returned an even par round for second slot and Gavin “the fort” Knox filled
out the flight on 34 points after a count back over Colin “the candle in the
wind blows out on the back nine” Davis. That’s got to be the longest moniker
ever!
John Calvert took B Flight honours on 37 points with Eddie the Capo juts one
shot adrift in second, leaving Jim Bell a further shot back in third.
Three of the regulars split the 2’s; Bob Newell, Eddie Beilby and Vic
Hester.
Friday, February 6, Khoa Kheow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Waycott (11) 36pts
2nd Bernie Nolan (12) 34pts
3rd Peter Hynard (12) 33pts
B Flight
1st Gavin Knox (13) 34pts
2nd Don Lehmer (13) 33pts
3rd Colin Oliver (16) 32pts
C Flight
1st Eddie Beilby (17) 35pts
2nd Geoff Kubas (20) 30pts
3rd Sean Murphy (18) 28pts
Khoa Kheow was host to a large contingent of Lewiinski’s golfers and the
players had to wait for the ladies Asian tour to finish before they could
start. This indicated a low scoring game, as the greens were lightning fast
and the pin positions on the greens were very tricky.
No golfer scored below par with A Flight’s Kevin Waycott posting the best
card of the day, an even par 36 points. The elegant Bernie Nolan was two
shots adrift for second (yes the same lady ‘One-Ball’ asked for her
autograph) and Peter Hynard took third with 33.
The inform Gavin Knox scrambled 34 points to take charge of B Flight; Don
Lehmer was a shot back in second, which left Colin Oliver to fill the
flight.
The captain himself led home C Flight, returning a card of 35 points. Geoff
Kubas needed only 30 points for second and this left a count back for the
final place between Sean Murphy and Jim Elphick, both on 28. Sean’s maths
prevailed.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi
13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in, and
add your name to the list or call Bob on 080 096 8232. Transport is

Royal Lakeside Country Club was the venue for a stableford
competition in two flights, with the cut at Handicap 18. The course on the
day was in its normal pristine condition.
Jesper
Rasmusson
Finn Olsen took the A Flight with a stupendous 44 points ahead of Peter
Blackburn in second on an almost as good 42 points. Alain Taddei was third
some way back on 38 points and Don Richardson was fourth with 35 on a count
back over Mike Winfield.
Gordon Clegg had his best round ever to win the A Flight with 41 points
ahead of Dave Richardson in second with 37 points. Coming In third was Nigel
Perry with 35 points on a count back over Peter Hammond in fourth.

Thursday, February 5, Khao Kheow – Stableford
This was a Khao Kheow day, and if you understand what that means
you will realise that at the start the players were not expecting anything
like the inflated scores of the Monday competition. Indeed all you usually
have to do on a day like this is to shoot your handicap. Would we have an
extraordinary score on a day such as this?
Richard
Kubicki
We had a later start on this day, but with optimism turned up ‘Dave Early’
as we can quite often get away, however on this day there was a major
competition on and not only could we not get away early but were pushed to
get away on time, with the instructions that we had to remain at least one
hole behind.
We started on the B Nine, and it was in superb condition being prepared for
the competition ahead, then onto the C Nine that was also in very good
condition. When you play on a superb course like this in the excellent
condition it is in, it is a privilege to play and there is not a better day
out here. Mind the scores still struggled.
In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Richard Kubicki with 35 points
ahead of Mike Allidi in second with 34 points and Finn Olsen in third with
32. We then had a count back on 30 points that saw Mike Winfield in fourth
and yours truly losing out.
In the B Flight the winner was Jesper Rasmusson with the only net par of the
day and 36 points. Jesper had 24 points on the front nine and then K.K.
reality set in. In second place was Nigel Perry with 33 points ahead of
Carol Kubicki in third on 31, Peter Hammond in fourth on the same score and
Kenny Chung just missing out on count back. T.T.F.N.

Tuesday, February 3, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
The Tuesday group assembled at Bert’s in the morning to dine and
sort out their rides to a new course: Pleasant Valley. Piercing the
cacophony of diners was the arrival of six nubile Caucasian nymphs, whose
appearance was somewhat of a shock to the early morning golfers. No doubt,
they had heard of Bert’s terrific breakfast and wanted to indulge. Well, we
tore ourselves away from this welcome intrusion and fumbled our ways along
the motorway to find this new golf course.
There was a temporary clubhouse with small reception modest change
facilities and restaurant. Out on the course we wrestled with the tight
layout, which wended around the bogs and ponds. The greens were slow and our
captain was heard to say that they were “like velcro”. Our reporter has
never putted on velcro, so could not confirm. The sand in the bunkers was
soft and deep, so we played “winter rules”.
Sometimes we played off the blue tees and sometimes when the tee shot across
the water was too far, we switched to the white tees. But occasionally this
was still not enough relief for our shorter hitters, who lost many balls and
for whom it would have been fairer to play off the red tees.
In spite of the challenging layout, several golfers who enjoyed the low
green fees, were complimentary about the course and had scored as well (note
how our reporter deftly uses the English language avoiding the misuse of
“good” as an adverb) as Khao Kheow, another popular course. Nigel Perry
seemed to take the course in stride with his long fading drives which suited
the course layout and this perhaps enabled him to be the overall winner.
Play went quickly and we were back at Bert’s before dark.

Friday, February 6, Crystal Bay B & C - Stableford
The first ever day of Friday golf from Tropical Bert’s came off
well as 22 golfers played the B & C nines at Crystal Bay.
After meeting at Bert’s for breakfast and the drive up Sukhumvit, the course
was found to be in better than average condition and available for good
scores for those who hit the ball long and straight.
The field was split into two divisions and the rounds of the day were
recorded by Kevin Dunne and Gordon Clegg, with a fine effort also turned in
by Scott Dobbins shooting a gross 72.
Returning to Tropical Bert’s through the late Friday afternoon traffic took
a bit longer than usual but a few cool ones and jumbo hot dogs provided by
Bert soon soothed even the most rattled traveler.
Friday golf will be scheduled each Friday and will support the PSC Monthly
Member Tournaments in addition to other special events during the year. All
are welcome to join us and may sign up at Tropical Bert’s.

Monday, February 2, Burapha - Stableford
Today 59 Outbackers played the C & D nines, which have been
renamed Cypress and Dunes, whilst A & B are now Augusta and Belfry. The
course was in great condition and with the help of Norm Martin on the C side
looking after the starters, and Capt’ Bob on D, things went as smooth as
ever.
There was another challenge for the ‘Roo Cup’ which, to the consternation of
the Irish partnership of Briany Christie and his mate Mike Doherty, was
again successfully defended by Capt’ Bob and his new partner, Sugar Ray (his
previous partner has had to return to Aus. - tough luck Paul!)
There was also a hole in one by Paul Lavender on C5, the highlight of his
day and he also managed to come second in Div B with 36 points. Good shot
Paul!
Lloyd Shuttleworth fired 72 off the stick to win Div A with 39 points and a
new handicap of just 2 and in second was Steve Morton, also playing off 3,
with 35.
Excellent scores were also returned by Steve Stayly (37 pts) to win Div B,
Patrick Murphy (37 pts) winning Div C and Tony Hill (36 pts) took Div D. As
is usual now at Burapha, the first three divisions play from the blue tees,
and the final division from the white. All in all it was a successful day,
with other notables; Peter Ennis, James Brackett & John Stafford also
finishing in the hunt, with some very acceptable scores.
In the draw for the free green fees, the winners were: Stuart Sinfield,
Steve Plant, Pete Gibson and Peter Murphy.
Finally, we are planning to go to Royal Hills for Songkran, leaving Pattaya
on Thursday April 16 and returning late Sunday 19; so if anybody is

Tuesday, February 3, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
Tuesday morning and 20 eager Outbackers made their way to Pattaya
Country Club to find a full car park and a busy clubhouse. However, after
the usual warm and efficient welcome, it was off to the first and the lead
group teeing off on time. The course played well and a number of players
played to their handicap or a little better.
With two divisions there were count backs to determine the winners and the
ever so slightly losers!
Div A was the battle of the ‘Pearces’ with Alan (36 pts) beating ‘The
Colonel’ Bob on the same score; Div B winner was regular Pattaya C.C.
player, Nigel Cannon, who edged out Gary Saunders, also both with 36 points.
There was only one ‘2’ today from Geoff Moodie.

Wednesday, February 4, The Emerald - Stableford
Twenty Outbackers made their way to the ‘Gem’ of a course, The
Emerald, arriving in time for a drink and a chat, before being away at our
allotted tee time. It is always surprising how quickly players can get to
this course but have a problem finding their way back!
On with the plot – the course was busy in front of us but we appeared to be
the last booking of the morning. Like a number of other courses it is drying
out in places where the sprinklers do not reach.
In ‘A’ Flight, winning by just a point, was Kiwi, Lloyd Shuttleworth with 36
points off his 2, soon to be 1, handicap – great golf Lloyd. Bob Lindborg
and Michael Waltschek took the minor places with 35 points apiece.
‘B’ Flight was won by the refugee from Ireland, Ivan Plunkett, with the
day’s top score of 38 points; 5 clear of Nigel Cannon and Bruce McAdam, both
on 33 and finishing second and third respectively.
Two ‘2’s today from Lloyd Shuttleworth and Mark Smith – who arrived from
Australia earlier in the morning.

Thursday, February 5, Green Valley - Stableford
It is sometimes interesting to look at what some players write on
their scorecards, some write their full name, some just their nickname or
first name. Most put their handicap in but not the date, some write in
Outback for the event etc., but a card written by one of the 22 Outbackers
at Green Valley yesterday, stood out in particular, under his name, where it
says event, he wrote ‘weekly self flagellation’. An interesting view!
Charles Sheppard got his handicap restriction lifted on medical grounds and
promptly lifted himself to the top of Div A with a timely 38 points, however
it looks as though he will be back to 18 by the weekend! Peter Ennis took
second with an excellent 37 off 9, with Stuart Sinfield just beating Mark
Hurwood, welcome back mate!, both on 35.
In a somewhat smaller Div B, Jum, who has already been cut three shots in
this handicap period, won again off her lowest handicap to date, with 37
points, from Gary Saunders on 35. Well done Jum!

Friday, February 6, Siam Plantation C & B - Stableford
The joint weekly visit of the Outback Golf Bar & The Golf Club to
this wonderful course came to a temporary end today, in preparation for the
LPGA tour event at the end of this month. Normal service will be resumed on
Friday March 13, but then continuing on Wednesday March 18, and every
Wednesday thereafter, the new regular slot. This switch will enable the
Outback Golf Bar to continue to enjoy the most competitive rate for the
Outbackers and friends, whilst enabling the management more freedom in
marketing the lucrative corporate days on Fridays.
For the next three Fridays – February 13, 20 & 27, the Outback Golf Bar will
be at Laem Chabang for an equally attractive green fee.
John McHugh put up a fine display of golf with an excellent 38 points (77
gross) to win Div A by three, from Capt’ Bob; with Joe Mooneyham shooting a
blistering 21-point back nine, edging out Eddie Smith for third, both on 33.
In Div B, the scores were somewhat lower, the 32 points from Brian Wilkinson
being sufficient to take first place, ahead of Jim Dundon, Two more “Golf
Club” regulars completed the success for the popular LK Metro venue, with
Martin Zimmerman beating Paul Mades both scoring 36 points, a long way ahead
of the rest, headed by Brian Maddox.
There were only two ‘2’s today from Joe Mooneyham & Brain Wilkinson.

Twenty-two Outbackers at the alternate local venue, with more

average, and today was the turn of Colin Bavington with 37 points to top Div
B, from Geoff Doody (who’s eventually earned a ladder point) on 36 and Norm
Martin with 35. In Div A the scores were slightly lower, 34 giving the win
to Bruce Milner; from Bob Lindborg & Ivan Plunkett both with 32.
There was only one ‘2’, coming from Norm Martin.

Kraft gets back to form at Pattaya C.C.
PSC golf from the
Three Sisters Bar & Grill
Talk about blind shots, the first two groups off at the
Pattaya Country Club were hitting into a fairway they could only see about
30 yards of. Once again caddies had to call one another to insure the lead
group was not met by flying little white balls.
Tuesday’s
winner Paul Kraft (left) with runner-up Bill Thompson.
By the time the first group reached the 2nd hole the fog had pretty much
lifted and players only had to contend with wet greens. It is not a warm
feeling to watch a rooster tail come up from your putt.
The sun finally poked through and it was a great day for golf. The groups
re-formed back at Caddy Shack II where Herbie had provided both regular and
spicy sausages. As the cards were reviewed, it was found that Paul Kraft had
come in with 41 points while Bill Thompson came in second with a 39. Several
players came in late but none could match the winning scores.
The vagaries of the game were then discussed among the players with the help
of several San Miguels.
Bob Lamond notches 5th at the Emerald
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, February 2, The Emerald -
Stableford
1st Bob Lamond 41pts
2nd Kenny Moss 34pts
3rd Stephen Lewis 34pts
4th Ray Banks 34pts
5th Peter Sumner 34pts
The Emerald is definitely a course that suits Bob Lamond, as he showed
emphatically in winning his fifth tournament out of the Haven with all of
them being at the Emerald.
This time out he swept away the field by seven clear shots on his way to a
gross 73 and 41 points, which took his handicap down to a low 5 and with the
addition of another very good round during the week, it all means next week
he will be off of 4, and all in all, that is not a bad week’s golf.
Leading the group on 34 points was Kenny Moss with a good 20 points on the
count back, which was just enough to take second ahead of Stephen Lewis, who
in turn won the count back with Ray Banks by virtue of a better back six,
with 12 points to Rays 11. Rounding out the podium, Peter Sumner came in
with eighteen points over the inward nine.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Alan Hanlon, Kenny Moss, Peter
Sumner, Timo Tarvainen and Rainer Helling had one each in the first
division.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed back Danny Millar, Ray Banks
and Yasuo Suzuki, who this time is traveling alone with his bicycle.
Wednesday, February 4, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
Division 1
1st Alan Griffiths 37pts
2nd Alan Hanlon 35pts
3rd Kinya Akiyama 33pts
Division 2
1st Ole Stamnes 33pts
2nd Vance Millar 31pts
3rd Paula Virolainen 29pts
With the very good value golf being currently offered at Crystal Bay and
Mountain Shadow another large turnout demanded two divisions once again,
with the split coming at 15 and below for the first division.
This was led home by Alan Griffiths whose 37 points was actually three under
the days CSS of 74, so he will be off of his lowest handicap ever starting
next week’s games. Alan’s very good round was underscored by the fact that
only he and second place man Alan Hanlon were within two of the standard for
the course that seemed to play even harder than usual, with greens being
particularly tricky.
Kinya Akiyama slipped into third place with a steady three over round that
was better than the score would have suggested.
The second division was taken by Ole Stamnes with a good three over, with
Vance Millar again figuring in the mix in second a couple of shots back.
Paula Virolainen made sure that she would remember her last game of this
visit as she tied up the third place another two behind.
Norman Isherwood had the only ‘2’ in the first division while Paula
Virolainen took the triple roll-over alone in the second division.
Prior to the presentations Suichi Kodaka was welcomed back and farewells
were given to Paula and Mauri Virolainen and Steven Howard.
Friday, February 6, Green Valley - Stableford
Division 1
1st Rick Holmes 40pts
2nd Bob Maloney 36pts
3rd Alan Griffiths 34pts
Division 2
1st Vance Millar 38pts
2nd Stephen Lewis 34pts
3rd Mike Sanders 33pts
Another course currently offering excellent value for money with the
tournament vouchers from the IPGC at 600 baht, ensured that once again two
divisions were required for the day with the split this time at 13 and below
for the first division.
Rick Holmes is at last coming back to form and is very happy to see his
handicap steadily reducing back towards its old level prior to his illness.
This day was another step in the right direction with an outstanding four
under round that easily saw off the challenge of Bob Maloney, some four
shots back at level par.
Alan Griffiths took his second podium placing of the week with a strong
count back of 7 on the back 3 holes after tying Trevor Schirmer on the back
nine at 19 and 13 on the back six.
Vance Millar also took his second placing of the week, this time in top
spot, with a two under round that was good enough to close out the second
division by four from Stephen Lewis, another double placer, in second with
Mike Sanders surprising everyone including himself taking third spot.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Alan Hanlon and Bob Maloney
