Pattaya Sports Club and Rotary supply water
to 4 schools in Phanat Nikhom
The
children say thank you to the Rotarians and the Pattaya Sports Club
for their new water filtration system at Thung Nonghian School.
William Macey
Many of us ignore the benefits of drinking water but a
supply of clean drinking water that is easily accessible is essential to
everyone’s health but, in particular, children both young and old. With this
in mind, representatives of Pattaya Sports Club and the Rayong,
Jomtien-Pattaya and Phanat Nikhom branches of Rotary set out to supply a
tried and tested filtration system of drinking water to 4 schools in Phanat
Nikhom.
New
drinking water filtration systems, like this one at Wat Maithapho School,
are up and running at 4 Phanat Nikhom schools.
Rotary have, for several years, been installing clean
water filters in schools to protect pupils and staff from harmful chemicals,
bacteria and virulent viruses which abound in tropical countries. Sadly,
there are still many schools using contaminated water, particularly in rural
areas, so there is still work to be done.
Situated to the east of Chonburi, William and Ron of the
PSC went to the area in August to investigate the situation and, as a
result, the PSC Committee decided to donate sufficient funds to install this
system to each school. One thing they did discover was that the local people
are very friendly and helpful. Not knowing the area, a policeman escorted
them on his motorbike around the farm areas to the first school. From there
the director gave up the rest of his day to act as navigator through the
area to introduce them to the directors of the remaining 3 schools. Without
their help, William and Ron may never have been seen again.
All 4 schools now have the system up and running, which
benefits, not only the children, but, because of the village atmosphere
around the schools in these farming areas, the families are encouraged to
take water home when visiting the school, benefiting them, too.

Garden’s Got Talent 2010
Eight
contestants who vied for the first prize in GIS Got Talent 2010!
Vanessa Vanderpoel
It has been that time of year again where the
students of Garden International School come out of their shell and show
the world what they have got in them.
Thursday 30th September 2010, the school hall was
transformed into a star stage, to make it feel as though it were a real
TV broadcasting studio. The number of students and teachers who entered
the contest was from a wide range of ages. From children in the year 7
classes, new to secondary school, all the way up to IB2.
Praw in Year 7 deservedly wins first prize.
The contestants who entered the event were: Monika
(IB1), Jennifer (Yr 8), TK and Johnney (IB2 &IB1), Fiat (Yr 8), Harshita
(Yr 7), Vidushi (Yr 7), Grace (IB1), Praw (Yr 7), and of course Mr.
Shiells and Mr. Watkins (AKA the “Black Eyed Proclaimers”). Our panel of
judges included Mr. Campbell, Mr. Lund and Ms. Morris, and the event was
comp่red by Romy and Martin in IB1.
The Black Eyed Proclaimers started the show with “I
Got A Feeling”, a Black Eyed Peas song, sung in the style of The
Proclaimers. This was followed by Monika with “Empire State of Mind”; TK
and Johnney sang an exciting Korean number followed by Jennifer with
“Naturally”.
Fiat was next up, with the Mariah Carey classic
“Hero”, then we enjoyed a very skillful Indian dance by Harshita and
Vidushi. Grace impressed the judges with the song “Teenage Dream” before
the final act, Praw, took to the stage with the song “This Is Me”.
The crowd went wild for all of these contestants, and
the judges had a difficult time making their decision. Eventually, they
agreed that first prize should go to Praw from Yr 7 who sang the song
“This is me” by the Disney star Demi Lovato. Praw performed with
effortless charisma, a confident look and a beautiful singing voice.
Such a lot of talent for such a young girl!
In second place was Grace with the song “Teenage
Dream” by Katy Perry, and in third place it was Harshita and Vidushi
with their Indian dance.
Overall, it was a wonderful event and it was
brilliant to see so much talent on display. If we are lucky we hope
there will be another talent show soon.

Eastern Seaboard Rotary group tours Isaan to see how donations being used
The
four German students Anna,
Cara, Hannah and Sera with school children.
Marliese Fritz
Long-time supporters of the poor in Isaan, six
members of the Rotary Club of the Eastern Seaboard took a journey to the
Northeast to see that their donations were being spent properly.
President Jan Abbink and his wife Ket were joined by
five other Rotarians in last month for a trip to Krasang, including four
German students who are teaching English in Pattaya thanks to the RCES
education project.
Peter Rottmann of the Rotary Club of Krasang and his
wife Nitaya, a RCES member, hosted a barbecue for the group’s arrival.
The next morning, they visited Ban Luak Phai School, a facility run only
by women teachers that had received a water tank from the RCES.
They also visited families of the Rotary’s food
project, who receive monthly stipends for essential foodstuffs. On the
visit, it became clear one member of a food project family named “Lamet”
needed a bicycle and one Rotarian student, Cara Stahl, donated it
herself on the spot.
The group also paid condolences to the Geritram
family, who recently lost a member. The father lives alone with his two
disabled children since his wife ran off. He carries them everyday to
school and to the clinic where they get treatments. He needed a
motorbike with a sidecar to send the children off and also to collect
garbage for an income. That came from the RCES as well.
The final visit was to Huey Samran School, about 20
km. outside Krasang. There 377 children needed a freshwater filter
system. After an impromptu meeting, the six Rotarians decided this would
be next on the donation list.

Santa is coming early this year
A
scene from last year’s fun-filled event.
Dr. Iain Corness
The Bangkok Hospital Pattaya’s annual Xmas bazaar
will be a little earlier this year. This well known charity event will
be held on Saturday November 27, as the weeks in early December are just
too full of pre-Xmas events.
This also makes it easier for Santa’s calendar, and
provides for a good practice run for the reindeer. Last year, the lead
reindeer (Rudolph) almost overshot the hospital’s helipad on the roof of
E building, giving Santa quite a fright.
Unfortunately there will be some children
hospitalized over the Xmas period, so the hospital wants our pediatric
patients to have the chance to enjoy the happiest moments of Xmas like
all other children. Santa Claus will go round the pediatric wards to
visit all the children who are staying as in-patients.
There will be many activities during the upcoming
event including Thai classical dancing, a choir, health information
booths, and product booths from many organizations and charitable
foundations around Pattaya. Revenue generated from this upcoming event
will be donated to the needy people in our community.
Bangkok Hospital Pattaya always celebrates special
events and festivals throughout the year such as the Songkran Festival,
Loy Krathong Festival, Xmas, and other important Thai celebrations.
