Queen Sirikit Hospital offers free flu shots to diabetics

Cmdr. Yada Phucharoen (standing, 2nd right), chief of the Diabetic Clinic explains the procedure to folks about to receive the vaccination.

Diabetics at higher risk of contracting the flu can receive free vaccinations against three types of influenza from Queen Sirikit Naval Medical Center.

The Plutaluang hospital’s nursing department received 1,420 doses of imported flu vaccine and is offering injections at no cost to diabetic patients. Patients already vaccinated were in high-risk groups, such as those with asthma, pulmonary and heart diseases, kidney failure, HIV, obesity and patients over age 65.

The vaccine immunizes patients against three strains of influenza, the potentially deadly H1N1 virus, Chinkungunya and seasonal influenza A. Cmdr. Yada Phucharoen, chief of the Diabetic Clinic, said the medicine does not pose any unusual side effects, although as with most flu vaccines, those allergic to eggs could also be allergic to the injection.

Yada explained that diabetics are more susceptible to the flu as they have a lower immunity level. He urged patients to apply for the free injections early, as demand does outstrip the supply.

For more information about receiving a free inoculation, contact 085-833-2191 or 038-245-65-75, ext. 2027.
