Chonburi is ordaining 999 monks as a way to let
provincial residents honor HM the King’s next birthday.
Part of a nationwide merit-making campaign, the
12-day ordination ritual concludes with a Jan. 21 ceremony at the
Emerald Buddha Temple of Ubosot in Bangkok. Monks will chant prayers and
present the “wheel of law.”
Chonburi Gov. Wichit Chatpaisit opened the ordination
process Jan. 8 at Yai Intharam Temple in Chonburi. He said it is both a
way for people to make merit before HM the King’s next birthday in
December as well as foster adherence to Buddhist principles.
The nationwide monk-ordination drive is being
sponsored by the Council of Ministers’ spouses, the Secretariat of the
Prime Minister, the Ministry of Interior, the Mahathera Association, and
the National Buddhism Office.
