Allidi is the class act at Sept. Monthly Mug
PSC golf from the Café Kronborg
Martin Todd and Ron Grafton.
San Mig Stu & Peter
Blackburn
Monday, Sept. 12, Crystal
Bay – Stableford
As one of the scribes made my way to the ‘Kronny’ on
Monday, he was unsure whether there would be enough starters to fill a mini
bus due to the prior two days exceptionally heavy rains and local flooding.
The trip to the course was absorbed by noticing a big
road washout at the entrance to the new motorway, which caused the
authorities to barricade the whole entrance, and numerous creeks and
waterways carrying huge amounts of run off to the ocean. But before we knew
it all eleven Kronny diehards were at the course and any skepticism was
altered when we noticed that there were plenty of other schmucks already
hacking away on what turned out to be a very pleasant day, with a nice
breeze and mostly cloudy skies keeping the heat down.
Peter Blackburn and Stu
Rifkin.
My beautiful caddie managed to keep my beer intake at a
sustainable level which further added to a decent day and kept any knee pain
away!
The fairways were surprisingly playable but even so
“Lift, clean and place” was the order of the day throughout the course.
Despite ponds in lieu of bunkers, the greens were in fine shape and if one
could wield a putter there were no excuses. Apparently not many putts were
made as the overall scores reflect and also the fact that the longest putt
prize was not won either.
At presentation Toddy welcomed all visitors including
Aussies John Coombs and Ron Grafton from Mandurah, Perth, and English
residents Mikito Homma (London) and fellow compatriot Steve Recce.
Toddy also thanked the very generous Dave Neal for
sponsoring today’s nearest pins and longest putt.
It was decided that as the field was small we would have
a single flight with a run down to sixth and surprisingly this spot was
taken out by guess who?

Mikito Homma was feeling the effects of a twelve hour
direct flight from London and was duly awarded the Compass Cap for the day.
His prize was to donate to the Charity Bin which he generously did.
Deefa the Dog was surreptitiously sneaked into the club
and he found his way around the tables snaffling bahts here and there from
all participants in today’s field.
These generous donations, which last year provided a
local Thai school with fresh drinking water facilities, are already well on
the way to again having sufficient bulk to consider a similar project for
some Pattaya children later in the year. Thanks to all donors once again for
your regular contributions!
Wednesday, Sept. 14,
Pattana B & C – Stableford
This was our very first Caf้ Kronborg bi–monthly
Wednesday golf competition and proved to be popular as all twelve spots (3
groups) were quickly filled and we welcomed first timer Peter Webley from
Perth, Australia.
Playing golf out of Caf้ Kronborg on Wednesdays was
brought about by requests from keen golfers wishing to play that extra game
every couple of weeks and gives us the opportunity to play at golf courses
that are not on our usual Monday/Thursday schedule. If Wednesday golf
continues to be popular then it is very likely that we will make it every
week sometime in the future.
As it was our inaugural Wednesday competition your
writer/organiser decided to go along as a spectator despite not yet having
recovered from a sciatic nerve problem, and whilst being very envious of the
ones that played it was nonetheless a very enjoyable day.
Departing the Kronny at the usual time of 0815 hrs we
arrived at Pattana 48 minutes later and despite the fact that it was “Sports
Day” and a green fee of just 750 baht there was hardly anyone there. Our
scheduled tee time was 1000 hrs but we were invited to start more or less
straight away and as the A nine was closed for maintenance it was to be B &
C.
“Oh no – we’re not starting on B1 are we?” exclaimed Mike
Winfield and it was a very funny sight seeing him tee off at 0930 hrs in the
first group with the water on left and right with his bony knees knocking
vigorously. He somehow managed to hit one straight and found grass so a
first hole drama had been averted.
The weather was perfect and as usual the course looked a
picture with lush fairways and very slick greens, particularly on the first
nine although most greens on C nine had been sanded but tended to be rather
quick. A leisurely round was completed in four hours and thirty five minutes
with a couple of stops for cold refreshments.
We had just the one flight with six place getters and
rewards for nearest the pins on all but one of the par threes sponsored by
Dave Neal & Stu Rifkin and a longest first putt on C9 sponsored by Martin
Todd.
Stu Rifkin returned to the winner’s circle, being the
only golfer to play to his handicap or better and took first place with 37
points. John Coombs from Mandurah finished second with 35 points and a count
back for third & fourth spots saw Martin Todd (16 points on C9) beat Ron
Grafton (15 points on C9), both with 34 points to complete an Aussie
1,2,3,4. Nid Pengplang finished in fifth spot and another count back had
Peter Webley (16 points on C9) take out sixth place from an unlucky Paul
Avery (12 points on C9) who also had 30 points.
1st Stu Rifkin (14) 37pts
2nd John Coombs (15) 35pts
3rd Martin Todd (7) 34pts
4th Ron Grafton (16) 34pts
5th Nid Pengplang (21) 33pts
6th Peter Webley (13) 30pts
Near Pins: B3 Mike Winfield; B7 Peter Webley; C2
John Coombs; 17th Ken Bernek.
Long Putt: C9 Mike Winfield
Thursday, Sept. 15,
Pattaya Country Club – Monthly Mug
As twenty of us were preparing to depart the Kronny for
the relatively short journey to the Pattaya Country Club, Peter Blackburn
(aka Blacky) who is still unable to swing a club due to his troublesome
sciatic nerve problem commented to one and all that he was backing Mike
Allidi to win today.
This was the second clue missed by an errant golfer in
today’s group that it was a “stroke” round. The first clue was that on the
starter sheet it stated “format stroke”. Finally the penny dropped for Stu
Rifkin when on the par four sixth green and unable to score a stableford
point he announced “I’m out” and proceeded to hit the ball away, which was
sitting six inches from the hole.
Fortunately, on hearing the cries of “Don’t – Noooo -
Stop!” from his playing partners he managed to slow down his putter club
head speed and instead of knocking the ball off the green he only hit it 20
feet away from the cup. Startled by the cries of anguish from his mates he
said “What?”
“It’s stroke today,” they said in unison.
“Why didn’t someone tell me?” replied Stu. Three more
putts later a score of nine was posted on his card in lieu of a six.
The course was in good condition as usual and the weather
was agreeable to all contenders battling it out for the prestigious prize.
Mike Allidi, knowing it was a stroke event, played exceptionally well
posting six birdies in his round to take out the Kronborg monthly mug award
with a fine 69 net.
Steve Recce and Mike Winfield took out the A and B Flight
winning positions respectively.

Duthie doubles up
PSC golf from The Fairways Golf Society
Two-timer Tony Duthie.
Tuesday, Sept. 13, Crystal
Bay – Stableford
We arrived here today to find the course in excellent
condition, and surprisingly so after all the rain we have had lately. We
were even allowed to take golf carts on the fairways. The weather was
overcast with a slight breeze so the conditions were ideal for golf,
although you would not have thought so from the scores returned.
Tony Duthie took the honours once again but with a
mediocre 34 points from a smaller field than usual. He also had a near pin
as did Scott Dobbins.
1st Tony Duthie (21) 34pts
2nd Jon Lay (7) 33pts
3rd Scott Dobbins (0) 32pts
Thursday, Sept. 15,
Greenwood - Stableford
Although the course was very wet it was still a pleasure
to play. We decided to play winter rules and this decision turned out
correct as there was absolutely no run on the fairways and your ball was
invariably covered in mud.
Only one person managed to play to his handicap today,
taking the honours for the second time this week. Yeah, you’ve guest it,
that man again (Steady Eddie) Tony Duthie with 36 points. Today he was
chased home by Mat Hanson, a newcomer to our society, and the lovely Ning
Neal who just lost out for second place to Mat on a back nine count back
18-15. Mat also had two near the pins.
Back at the club house after the presentation they was a
warm round of applause for Tony, but not for his recent achievements and
good form. It was because he announced that he had to return to the U.K. for
a short while and this would allow someone else to win for a change!
1st Tony Duthie (21) 36pts
2nd Mat Hanson (11) 35pts
3rd Nig Neal (15) 35pts
4th Richard Hurley (8) 34pts
Note: The Fairways Driving Range and Golf Society
is situated at the top of Pattaya Klang on Sukhumvit Road and anyone wishing
to play with us can call into the club house and put their names down on the
lists provided or call Scott on 084 389 2379.

Rule Britannia -
Britton rules the games
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Colin and Sim celebrate Colin’s hole in one at
the PSC Monthly.
Tuesday, Sept. 13,
Greenwood C & A - Stableford
1st Clive Mathews (15) 34pts
2nd Lou Szigligeti (19) 32pts
Did ‘Santa’ Claude Harder win the low gross trophy even
when it was not the monthly medal last Sunday? Well, the answer to the query
is No; the rum sodden mind of the scribe failed his readership and the
society once again so I apologize.
With Sunday’s game canceled due to torrential rain it was
decided that the following Sunday is to be the monthly medal.
A somewhat depleted group turned out for the formidable
challenge of Greenwood and Clive Mathews led the boy’s home with a modest 34
points. Aussie Lou Zig-Zag filled the flight two shots adrift of Clive.
No 2’s were recorded so a rollover on Wednesday at St
Andrews.
Wednesday, Sept. 14, St.
Andrews - Stableford
1st Billy Britton (15) 36pts
2nd Morten Esseth (17) 35pts
Lewiinski’s Irish boys have been a little quite of late
so they turned to master craftsman, County Wicklow’s favorite son Terry
Managan, to see if he could help restore some respectability to the game.
The man he sent was Billy Britton. Billy took up the challenge at the
formidable St. Andrews and toured the course in even par. A feat regarded as
a good game and one we would all like to accomplish on this layout. Needless
to say Billy took home the first prize and top spot on the podium.
Looking up at Billy a step down was Morten Esseth a
stroke adrift while Morten and Peter Henshaw split a healthy rollover 2’s
pot.
Well at last a Brit on top of the podium, Ha!
Friday’s game was canceled so the lads could play in the
monthly PSC competition where our very own Donkey scored a hole in one.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.
Transport is provided.

Hiskett scores back to back wins
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday (PSC) Golf Group
Tuesday’s winners with the
staff at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, Sept. 13, Phoenix
- Stableford
On only his second game with the group this year, Graham
Hiskett once again showed the rest of the field how to play golf. Graham is
a member of Siam Country Club Old Course and usually plays his weekly golf
either there or at Plantation. Just goes to show if you get your handicap by
playing at Siam the other courses in the area must be a doddle. He scored 40
points (with two blobs). Looks like his handicap will drop next week!
With this week’s competition being for the KPK Food
Services voucher award, Graham sadly could not be eligible. Group rule is
you have to have played 5 times in one year for any of the sponsored prizes.
So we awarded Graham the first prize in terms of the usual first prizes,
plus a consolation KPK Food Services cap.
In second place was the Cheshire grin man, Patrick
Browne, who scored a meagre 34 points and received the KPK Food Services
voucher. In third place with 33 points was the ever hyper Stuart Gordon.
Don’t know where he gets his energy from.
Near pins went to Goort Gelten and Patrick Browne and the
lucky draw prizes donated by our hosts The Relax Bar at Ban Am Phur were
awarded to yours truly, Peter Harris & Bob Neylon.
Suffice to say everyone who attends the presentation is a
winner with this group because we all enjoy the first drink Free, back at
The Relax Bar.
It appears the very lowest of the low season may well be
behind us now with a few of our regulars returning from travels abroad. We
send our best wishes to Hugh Byrne and his good lady Paula who both have
some health problems. We sincerely hope they recover soon and return to the
Land of Smiles.
We still have tee times every Friday AT 12.00 Noon
available and, of course every Tuesday at 12.00 noon. Anyone who would like
to try out our little group is welcome. We only stipulate male only and we
only allow 28 handicap maximum. Our group consists of both high and low
handicappers and we try to pair the players with other players of a similar
handicap when playing for the sponsored prizes twice monthly. However,
mixing it up little is still employed in the other two weeks of the month.
The sea fishing, again sponsored by KPK Food Services
Ltd., is now improving with the waters getting a little cooler. There are
now two trips every month being arranged and anyone interested in either the
golf or the fishing should call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565.

Sus gets back to winning ways
PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar
Wednesday winner Sus Ige
(left) with runner-up Dale Murphy.
The sun was out instead of what it did to the Jester’s
Children’s Fair last Sunday. Pattaya Country Club did however have a problem
with the soaked fairways this 14th of September - No carts were allowed on
the fairways but that did not hinder the roll of the ball. The very high
drives or irons did seem to stay right where they landed though.
Back at Caddy Shack II, Herbie was back in the cooking
business serving the usual hot dogs but with “real” hot dog relish. Being
relieved of cooking duties seemed to take the pressure off Sus Ige and
allowed him to come in with a whopping 39 points for the victory, while Dale
Murphy followed with a 37. Paul Kraft almost made it to the course before
his battery died, not on his cart, his truck.
Pottsy posts his personal best
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Noel
Taylor (left), 2nd in Div B on Friday scored more points than Dennis Pelly
(right) who was the winner of Div A.
Monday, Sept. 12, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
In the aftermath of the heavy rains in the early hours of
Sunday morning (11th Sept) it was hardly surprising
that the Khao Kheow field was severely diminished. Central Pattaya was
inaccessible to most, apart from the foolhardy, with many businesses under
deep water, including those of our good friend Rosco, the Good Everything
Bar in second road and his Sports Bar opposite the Bay Breeze just across
the way.
It’s hard to tell the full extent of the damage but there
is one condo block in soi 15 which must have sustained some serious damage
in its underground parking area, not only the cars but also to the
electrical system, as the building still seems to be without power. General
Jack, who lives just a bit further down the same soi, got out of bed around
4.30 a.m. and stepped into water; he lives on the fourth floor! His entire
wooden floor was under about 30mm of water through a faulty drain on his
balcony!
So the few who played golf (12 to be precise) on C & A,
had to deal with a pretty damp course to say the least, but we hear the
greens were OK. Dennis Pelly bounced back from his “driver only” round at
Green Valley, but quite why he took 11 to get out of a bunker using only his
driver, we cannot really reveal. Nevertheless, his 36 points today was
enough for the win from Alan Ansell (34) and Sel Wegner (33).
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Dennis Pelly (13/Hi12.5) 36pts
2nd Alan Ansell (24/Hi22.2) 34pts
3rd Sel Wegner (15/Hi13.7) 33pts
Tuesday, Sept. 13, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
With no further rain, there was an excellent turnout at
Pattaya Country Club with a field of 24 on a course that was soggy underfoot
on some of the lower lying holes but dry and firm on the higher ground. The
greens were in good nick but the bunkers were generally poor, even if it was
after the heavy rains, with many of them poorly raked from previous players.
It was a slow round for whatever reason, we always try to
spot the slower players and put them out towards the back. There was one
group that we identified as losing two holes on the group in front and they
will be at the back next time! One thing that Chad, today’s organizer, said,
“next week we’re not going out last again!”
So it was Pottsy’s day, having only last week appealed
that he couldn’t play to his EGA handicap, the system was vindicated as he
returned his best ever gross score of 82 (42pts) and his target now is to
break 80. Well done mate! The next best score was 35; Sel Wegner had that
for 1st place in Div A and Mam also for 2nd
place in Div B.
There were three ‘2’s from Sel Wegner on hole 5 and Billy
Fitzgerald & Owen Walkley on hole 7.
Div A (0-15)
1st Sel Wegner (12/Hi13.7) 35pts
2nd John Cogan (15/Hi16.2) 34pts
3rd Lloyd Shuttleworth (4/Hi5.7)
34pts
4th Owen Walkley (8/Hi9.7) 34pts
Div B (16+)
1st Campbell Potts (16/Hi17.5)
42pts
2nd Phompinmon Seesa (29/Hi27.7)
35pts
3rd Alan White (16/Hi17.6) 35pts
4th Kurt Eric Persson (29/Hi29.2)
34pts
Wednesday, Sept. 14,
Burapha – Stableford
Well the rain threatened but never eventuated, the course
was in great shape, apart from a few damp areas. How this course can stay in
this condition with the amount of rain we have had is quite spectacular,
there was no player out today that could fault the course at all.
A good sized group of 37 playing C and D loops but alas
it was a slow round of golf, thanks to the starter not letting me put out
three 3-balls first and he made us wait till he could send a 5-ball and a
4-ball group out in front of us and they were playing 2 mulligans per person
per nine holes.
Anyway with a little bit of adjustment, the Capt’
finished playing as a 5-ball at the back, but I felt sorry for the guy
playing by himself behind us and the three 3-balls chasing him, alas there
was nothing we could do to help as we all waited on every shot.
We were joined by Benn Nelson and a few mates today,
great to see you fellas, and another group of our Aussie boys were there,
but unfortunately going home Sunday, this being a short trip but they will
be back in March to take some more cash off us.
It was good of Eddy Beilby to call in to see us on Sunday
when he couldn’t play at Green Valley due to the rainy season not quite
being over yet. Play with us at Burapha mate, it doesn’t rain there.
Well done to Paul Bourke for his 41 points to easily win
Div A from Lloyd Shuttleworth (35), but the top score of the day came from
one of the Aussie visitors in Div C, Chris Van Hausen with 42, from Ivan
Plunkett who has finally cracked it, on 39. Three were all tied up with 36
points apiece in Div B, Murray Hart taking it from Sel Wegner and Benn
Nelson.
There were seven ‘2’s: one from Lloyd Shuttleworth on
hole 5, three on hole 8 from Paul Bourke, Billy Gray & Jean Paul, another
one from Lloyd on hole 11 and also from Mick Morrison and finally one from
Ivan Plunkett on hole 17.
Div A (0-12)
1st Paul Bourke (10/Hi10.3) 41pts
2nd Lloyd Shuttleworth (5/Hi5.7)
35pts
3rd Steve Mann (11/Hi10.5) 34pts
4th Mike Mier (7/Hi7.5) 34pts
Div B (13-17)
1st Murray Hart (13/Hi12.8) 36pts
2nd Sel Wegner (14/Hi13.7) 36pts
3rd Benn Nelson (13/Hi12.4) 36pts
4th John O’Keefe (17/Hi16.4) 35pts
Div C (18+)
1st Chris Van Hausen (28/Hi27)
42pts
2nd Ivan Plunkett (20/Hi19.6) 39pts
3rd Howard Marsden (19/Hi18.6)
34pts
4th Vaulton Reece (18/Hi17.6) 33pts
Friday, Sept. 16, Green
Valley – Stableford
Looking at the scores returned from 20 players at Green
Valley today, one wonders what made the scoring so difficult on a day of
pleasant weather and a course with good greens and otherwise also in
excellent nick. Surprisingly the hardest hole was not the first as one might
expect, but the fifteenth and the easiest hole was the par 5 fourteenth.
Just 32 points was enough to win Div A, which was
achieved by Dennis Pelly playing off 12, with Billy Fitzgerald, also off 12,
one point back as was Owen Walkley. Div B did much better as John Stafford
won with the only under par round of 37 points, from Noel Taylor’s parting
round of 34, as he returns to Aus this weekend.
There were three ‘2’s from Owen Walkley on hole 9 and
Andy Makara & Sang on hole 16.
Div A (0–15)
1st Dennis Pelly (12/Hi12.5) 32pts
2nd Billy Fitzgerald (12/Hi12.9)
31pts
3rd Owen Walkley (9/Hi9.8) 31pts
4th Sugar Ray (15/Hi15.2) 30pts
Div B [16+]
1st John Stafford (17/Hi16.7) 37pts
2nd Noel Taylor (22/Hi21.4) 34pts
3rd Bruce McAdam (23/Hi22.9) 33pts
4th Brian Maddox (18/Hi17.6) 33pts

Evans above the field
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday’s top three: Daryl
Evans, Mike Gaussa and Dick Warberg.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Sept. 13, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
It had been pouring down here in Pattaya for days, with
Sunday being the heaviest, so on the way to Bert’s on Tuesday we all
wondered whether Khao Kheow would be fit to play. The course is notoriously
susceptible to soft ground when there has been a lot of rain and it did not
look good on this day.
The morning meet at Bert’s was somber, still after one of
Bert’s breakfasts it was into the cars and down to Khao Kheow. Rain could be
seen falling over the hills, however we were soon at the course and booking
in. The instruction from the reception was not surprising, “no carts off the
path”, so it was off to the changing room and then to the start.
The test for the day was to be the C & A nines, and we
were soon underway. Whilst it was windy the course was not as wet as we
expected, more like pretty damp. Still the day was difficult with an
occasional spitty rain; then it got humid, hot and sweaty. The fairways were
not bad but the greens were still quick if not at top speed. Suffice to say
we got around. Half way around we were even allowed to drive in the rough!
The showers were a welcome relief, as was a cold drink
and a bit of food in the restaurant. Then back to Bert’s.
Back at the ranch it was soon time for the presentation,
and most winners seemed to come from the same four-ball, and not mine. So
the winner was Daryl Evans with 37 points ahead of a count back on 36 points
that saw Mike Gaussa in second and Dick Warberg in third. In fourth we had
Mikito Homma on count back over Don Carmody, both on 32 points.
Near pins went to Mashi Kaneta, Derek Brook, Mike Gaussa
and Don Carmody.
Presentation over, we then got stuck into the ‘Happy
Hour’. T.T.F.N.

Golfers roar to success at Lions Club Sirindhorn’s Cup
The flight winners of the
20th Sirindhorn’s Cup Golf Tournament pose for a photo with Lions Club
President-elect of 2011-2012, Montri Sachdev (right).
Manoon Makpol
Pattaya’s Lions Club hosted a party to announce the
results of the Sirindhorn’s Cup Golf Tournament on Monday, September 12,
with the evening also including an auction and many other highlights to
raise funds for charity.
The golf tournament was held at Siam Country Club
earlier in the day with the field split into three main flights, A, B &
C, with two separate flights for the Ladies and Seniors. The format for
the day was stroke play with count backs deciding the final placings in
the event of a tie.
Pulwachorn
Jitphaisansirikul (3rd left) was the proud auction winner of HRH Maha
Chakri Sirindhorn’s portrait.
The winner of A Flight (H/cap 0-9) was Dr. Preeda
Phuthasiriyakorn who finished just ahead of runner up Back Kang Hum. B
Flight (10-17) was topped by Vanchai Sudathep, with Thaworn
Ratanasaowaphap taking second place, and C Flight (18-24) was won by
Kaewruth Phuthanasin while Dr. Santh Methasiri was the runner up.
In the Ladies flight (0-24) Phuthida Thongphen proved
to be the best on the day as she came home first ahead of Visakh
Phuthanasin while the Seniors (0-24) top honours went to PSC President
Tony Oakes who was pushed to the line by second placed Sumraan
Sawadchai.
At the presentation party all the individual flight
winners received Sirindhorn’s Cup trophies while the second placed
finishers were presented with the Mayor of Pattaya’s honorary cups.
Other prizes doled out on the evening included golf bags, umbrellas,
shirts, and other golfing paraphernalia.
The highlight of the evening was the auction of HRH
Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s portrait, which went to the highest bid of
49,999 baht from Pulwachorm Jitphaisansirikul.
The annual Lions Club golf tournament is just one of
many events held each year to help raise funds for the charitable works
supported by the organization. For more information on Lions Club

Scurrel sails to victory at Giant Panda Tour Chiang Mai
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Jomtien golfers on tour in
Chiang Mai.
Monday, Sept. 12, Lanna
Golf and Sports Club – Stableford
This was our first visit for Jomtien Golf here in Chiang
Mai and the majority of the golfers and partners their inaugural trip; some
left on the overnight coach on the Friday, a couple by car and the rest on
the 1 hour flight departing at 10.00am on the Saturday.
There was an individual competition on each of the three
days for two divisions, plus the ‘2’s and nearest the pins and an overall
three day combined stableford contest for the winner of the Giant Panda
Tour.
Overall winner Neville
Scurrell with his partner Ya Ya and the new addition to the family.
Just 25 minutes down the road from our hotel was our
first course, literally set in the city centre. Only three tees to choose
from and the middle range, white of course, was 6,794 yards so a fun day
would be had by all.
Neville Scurrell had the best return of the day with 35
points in division 1; Bob Poole was second on 32 and Billy Hewitt took third
with 31.
Lee Casey won division 2 with 33 points, beating Terry
Redding by two points, and playing off the whites with three shots added to
her handicap, the Burapha caddie Miss Kung was third with 30 points.
On the 220 yard par three 4th hole there was nobody on
the green in either division but on the shorter 17th, 170yds, Chris Voller
and Marty Aronson got nearest the pins.
David Phillips in division 2 birdied the par three 8th
for the only ‘2’ today, so a rollover in division 1 to Royal Chiang Mai.
While the golfers were playing, all the girls were out
shopping at the many markets or sampling the local food.
Wednesday, Sept. 14, Royal
Chiang Mai – Stableford
It is the rainy season here at the moment, with
torrential downpours every day, normally late afternoon, and we were
informed this does not clear up until early November and the dry season
lasts only through to mid April.
The fairways were very sodden today so ‘pick, clean and
place’ was selected for the rest of the week. There were many embedded balls
lost today on the fairways and this reflected in the scores.
The course was 6,389 yards off the white tees today and
the highest scores in were 31 points from the inform Neville Scurrell, who
beat countback Burnie 16/15 on the back nine, while Chris Voller took third
with 28, in division 2 Andy Oz also won with 31, beating Terry Redding by 2
points and Lee Casey by 3.
Only two near pins today, coming from Chris Voller on the
3rd and Bob Poole in division 2 on the 17th. There were no ‘2’s in either
division so rollovers to our last game on Friday.
Friday, Sept. 16, Chiang
Mai Highlands - Stableford
Voted one of the best three courses in Thailand and in
the top ten of the Asia courses, we arrived to find it almost deserted. We
were all very lucky with the weather today and we all enjoyed a rain free
round with slightly soggy conditions on the front nine. The cut today was
6-19 in division 1 and 20+ in division 2.
The best score of the week came in from Harry Vincenzi
with 39 points to win division 1, while playing off 15, Neville Scurrell
shot a gross 1 over par on the back nine to come in second with 38 points
and Chris Voller took third on 36.
A different story in division 2 with Terry Redding in
podium position with 34 points, Lee Casey in second one point behind, and
Andy Oz finishing third.
Billy Hewitt and Chris Voller shared the rollover ‘2’ pot
in division 1 while ‘Mr. no car’, Andy Baber, birdied the 14th for the
division 2 pot.
Yet again only two near pins today, both in division 2,
one for Marty Aronson and the other for Bob Poole.
This was the best course we played all week and everyone
enjoyed it, and according to everyone’s remarks afterwards it is almost up
to Black Mountain standards.
After three rounds of golf this week the presentation
took place at the Raming Lodge Spa Hotel where the majority of us stayed and
the staff made us most welcome, especially Jenny, guest service agent based
on reception. We could definitely recommend this accommodation to anyone
planning a visit.
The overall winners of the week were: Miss Kung finishing
6th with 84 points, Andy Oz in 5th with the same score but a better count
back, Chris Voller took 4th on 92, Lee Casey lost out to Terry Redding on a
34/33 count back for second after both scored 94 points, but the winner with
104 points to take The Giant Panda tour trophy (cuddly toy) was Neville
Scurrell. Well done Neville!

Clive bounces
back at Emerald
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Clive
Hoseason on the phone tells Ray of his success at Emerald.
Tuesday, Sept. 13, Pattana
– Stableford
Tuesday was a trip up to Pattana where the course, as
always, was in good condition despite being a bit damp underfoot in places
following recent rains. Given the dampness, we played ‘lift, clean & place’,
but really the group just played poorly today.
Jeff Wylie (6) finished just in front of Frans Olgers
(18) at the top of the leaderboard despite not getting within 6 shots of his
handicap.
Thursday, Sept. 15,
Emerald - Stableford
Thursday was a different story, as Clive Hoseason (32)
came out with some improved form from Tuesday to shoot a creditable 39
points at Emerald. In second spot was Jeff Wylie (6) who managed to eke out
34 points, just edging Brian Maddox out of the prize pool.
The course had shown marked improvement from last month’s
visit, with the greens now running markedly smoother and faster.
Near Pins were picked up by Clive, Jeff and Dennis, with
1 going un-won for a Banglamung Boys Home donation.
Our players had only minor success this month at the
Monthly PSC Tournament at Crystal Bay, but it was hearty congrats to Paul
Smith on his excellent Low Gross & to Colin Davis on his hole in one.
As I mentioned over the past couple of weeks, as players
have begun to return from sojourns, our normal competitions have resumed.
Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday, with presentation at
the course Tuesday & ML hosting on Thursdays. Call 089 094 1841 for
scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Wagner waltzes away with the win
PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar
Terry Wagner celebrates his
Monday win back at The Golf Club Bar.
Monday, Sept. 12, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Jack Bowman (13) 42pts
2nd Mick Beresford (11) 39pts
3rd Geoff Doody (19) 38pts
“Geordie Jack” Bowman hits a long, long ball and to watch
him play would remind you of the great Ian Woosnam in both stature and
power. This length was used to his benefit as he took a first on our regular
Green Valley Monday visit, shooting 42 Stableford points. Jack worked in the
circus a while back, but there was no clowning around on Monday, well played
mate.
Stylish Micky B. took a second (39 would normally be
enough for a win!) and Geoff Doody brought up the rear with his 38 points
for a third place finish, beating out J.T.B. on count back.
The course was in great shape still, even after the heavy
rains all over the region.
Wednesday, Sept. 14,
Bangpra - Stableford
1st Terry Wagner (20) 33pts
2nd Bill Gneiting (19) 32pts
3rd Don Lehmer (16) 29pts
An American 1-2-3 took top honors today as The Golf Club
made its way to Bangpra.
It took Terry 17 holes to realize we weren’t playing from
the blue tees, but that didn’t stop him from winning on the day. It was
smaller field than usual for Wednesday, but there were big laughs on a
perfect day on a course in perfect condition. All the comments were highly
complementary on the condition of the course, especially after the
torrential rain we had only 5 days before.
You never know what to expect from the monkey business on
this course, but today was an easy one for the caddies as only 2 monkeys
were to be seen. For those who have never played Bangpra, it is known as
“the monkey course” as there are three large tribes of the little primates
on this course. They are amazing to watch of course, but their natural
curiosity will usually entice them to a golf buggy full of snacks, phones
and keys so beware of your possessions when you play here!
We were off the white tees, Terry! Our thanks to Nigel
Flanagan for making plans for the golf today, and we hope to see more of
Nige at the helm in the future.
Friday, Sept. 16, Crystal
Bay
(P.S.C. Monthly Tournament)
A fun day of golf with the PSC Monthly Tournament on the
agenda for this Friday at Crystal Bay and the event turned out to be great.
Crystal Bay was in very good condition and the course will be on our
schedule next month as it represents great value and a great track.
Congratulations to one of The Golf Club regulars, Paul Smith for his victory
on the day. (See the full report and results on page 44).
Our mates at Lewiinski’s put on a great spread for the
presentation afterwards and our thanks go out to Colin (Mr. Hole in One!)
and the crew for their fine efforts and hospitality. Many hours of prep were
turned in this week to set up the event, and our thanks also go to Joe
Mooneyham, Bob Lindborg and Nigel Cannon. Well done guys!
I guess we should also thank Jez “Lucky” Lees for
providing liquid refreshment in the form of large bottles of Magners cider
as he generously got the drinks in after winning the Lucky Draw pot!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro,
off Soi Buakhao and Soi Diana junction. We can be reached on 085 434 3377 or

Duckett does it in style
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
Having lost their first competition of the week to the
storms, the Pattaya Golf Society members travelled to the Emerald course in
Ban Chang on Wednesday, 14th September, to play a stableford event on the
popular course. The track was better prepared than on the previous visits
with greens resembling proper putting areas now and a great deal of work
being done around the course in general. However soft fairways and tees
placed back made the course a long challenge for the majority of the field.
In third place on twenty-nine points, with an astounding
23 putts on the front nine, was Tony Thorne and he was only two points off
the runner-up place which was occupied by Gary Olliffe with his 31 points.
The winner was Alan Duckett of the Windmill Bar in Soi 5, Jomtien and his 35
points was a just reward for some fine long hitting golf. Alan does not play
as often as he would like but he has found a consistency in his game which
has seen him drop only one shot to his handicap over the last three
competition rounds.
The only competition birdie ‘2’ was recorded by Mike
Wilsher, on the thirteenth, whilst a two on the fifteenth in a qualifying
round for a handicap saw Gary Boller pick up his first Booby Bevy. After all
“you have to be in it to win it”! The good news is that Emerald is getting
back to its usual condition after a few months of heavy greens maintenance.
Maiden win for Blackshaw
On Friday, 16th September the Pattaya Golf Society left
their Soi Buakhao base and travelled to Khao Kheow to play a stableford
competition over the C and B nines. The C course was in very good condition
and was later being used for a Thai competition but the B track was only
opened up for farangs because the A nine was part of the aforementioned
competition. Basically the nine holes are not yet playable as new turf is
being laid on many holes after serious rain damage and this is not marked as
GUR. A tough day lay ahead.
The day went to form with three golfers all sharing
second place, Gary Olliffe and Tony Thorne joining best gross golfer of the
day Wichai Tananusorn with 33 points. The winner in only his third
competition with PGS was Paul Blackshaw whose solid accurate golf helped him
collect 35 points for a fine maiden win.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to
Ronnie Ramsay for achieving five “blobs” on the first eight holes and a
level par performance over the final ten. Not a bad way to end one’s final
round before returning to work!

Friday, Sept. 16 – Crystal
bay
Some 84 players made their way to Crystal Bay on this
fine Friday morning and with the choice of going up the ‘7’ or ‘3’ most
arrived well in time and registered with PSC Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham.
Time for a coffee and a chat and it was off to both 1st
and 10th tees for a prompt start and a 4 hour round
for the front runners and only a little longer for the back markers.
This is a another course that PSC have not used for some
time – it was in good shape all around however the clubhouse does need some
further attention to make it more welcoming.
Bob Newell (left) – the A
Flight winner.
During the round we all heard a big shout around the
course – Colin Davis had an “ace” on hole number B6!
Just 8 ladies today and top place went to Rotjana Neal
(15) with 40 points, runner-up –and keeping it in the family was Sim Davis
(24) with 35 points.
It was another 40 points for the winner of ‘C’ flight
Daryl Evans (21).
Taking ‘B’ flight was Ted Morris (16) with 39 points.
The ‘A’ flight winner, coming in with a fine Gross 74 –
Net 67 was Bob Newell (7).
The low gross of the day with a great score of 69 was
Paul Smith (2).
Once the final groups had handed in their cards and the
team of Joe, Nigel and Bob had calculated the results it was back to
Lewiinski’s where the usual great buffet was waiting – plenty for all with a
great selection to suit all tastes.
Ladies winner Rotjana Neal
accepts her prize.
Now all fed and watered it was time for the results to be
announced. As usual it was the scribe acting as MC for the evening who
introduced Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham, who expressed his appreciation to
all the players today as well as the help he got from Bob and Nigel.
Then back to the MC for the prize winners, lucky draw
winners, this month drawn by Arisa Hennings, and finally the 50/50 winner.
This was Jez Lees who is in training for the annual cross-bay swim and is
supported by many PSC members.
The next PSC monthly will be at Eastern Star on Friday 14th
October and will be a two person ‘better ball’. Sign up at the clubhouse.
Smiles all round for 50/50
winner Jez Lees.

Stuvik survives spectacular crash at Paul Ricard circuit
Sandy Stuvik races during
round 11 of the 2011 EuroCup series at the Paul Ricard circuit in France,
Saturday, Sept. 17.
The Paul Ricard high tech test track hosted round 11 and
12 of the 2011 EuroCup series under the World Series by Renault last weekend
(September17-18, 2011). It is owned by Formula One promoter Bernie
Ecclestone and is characterised by its long Mistral straight (1.8km) and
elongated track design. The track is also unusual in that it is built on a
plateau, and very flat. The length of the full track is around 5.8km. The
track offers today 167 possible configurations and because of this many
Formula One teams use this track for testing.
With a clear blue sky and temperatures well over 30
degrees Celsius the atmosphere at this very modern circuit is magical. Sandy
Stuvik, the 16 year old Thai racer started out on Friday’s practice running
very well, only 1.7 second seconds behind the fastest cars. For the second
practice the team tested a new setting for Sandy, but he struggled with the
new setting and saw his times drop.
For Saturday morning qualification, the team again tried
a new setting similar to his team mate, but again Sandy struggled to find
confidence in the car and found himself qualified in 31st place, 2.6 seconds
behind the pole sitter Poul Loup Chatin. The team again rallied and reverted
the car back to Sandy’s base setting in time for the afternoon race.
The 35 car group all got off to a good start, Sandy was
initially slow of the grid, but shot up past 9 cars on the opening lap
alone. Then he started settling in and getting used to the new car set up,
clearly he was much more comfortable with this set up and was now running
only 1 second down on his team mate, the closest he had been all weekend
long. Sandy pushed a little too hard in turn 10 however and lost a couple of
places and in the end took the checkered flag in 23rd position.
The qualifying round for the 12th race on Sunday was run
at a wet and cold Paul Ricard circuit, in stark contrast to the warm and
wonderful weather the previous day. Sandy was not overly happy with his
pace, but managed to improve on Saturday’s qualifying with a 27th place.
Into the afternoon the rain abated, but the track was
overcast and quite windy by the time the 12th race of the season got
underway. This time Sandy had a good start and started overtaking cars in
usual style. By the end of the first lap he had moved up 3 places and
continued chasing down cars in front of him.
Coming into the last corner on lap 2 Sandy found himself
in the middle of a 3 car sandwich and the inside car hooked his front wheel
under Sandy’s rear and Sandy got thrown up in the air and spectacularly
rolled the car over until it again landed back on its wheels. The rear wing
and several wheels were damaged and Sandy got a ride back to the circuit’s
medical center, before being given an all clear by the doctor.
The young Thai driver entered the championship as one the
youngest and least experienced drivers and continues to learn and improve
himself in preparation for next season, where certainly he will carry far
more experience and be prepared to take on the competition in this very
tough championship.
The final race in the 2011 EuroCup series will be at the
Catalunya Circuit in Barcelona Spain in 2 weeks time, from 7-9 October 2011.

Ayaz Shaikh wins Thailand September Match Race Challenge
The winning crew led by Ayaz
Shaikh pose for a photo at Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya, Sunday, Sept.
4
Report - Morten
Jakobsen & Neil Semple
Photos - Alex Samaras
The continued enthusiasm at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club
in Thailand for match racing was in evidence again at the ISAF Grade 3 event
held over the long weekend, 2nd to 4th September 2011.
Platu 25 foot yachts were used for the event and those
who had not sailed in them before thought they were “just the job” for match
racing. There were eight teams with a good geographic spread: India (2),
Singapore (1), Malaysia (2), Finland (1), France (1) and Thailand (1)
rotating between four Platus.
The silver medal team from
Singapore.
Some light rain delayed racing on day one until
lunchtime. But Race Officer Chris Dando is not one to dilly dally and he got
in eight flights of the round robin by close of business on day one at
5.30pm, with each match doing two windward-leeward loops. The tide played a
key role in day one’s racing with those venturing out to the right on the
beat generally coming off worst against those that stayed closer to shore.
That night former Flag Commodore Peter Cummins remarked
over a beer that the easterly night time on shore breeze augured well for
good winds for day two; and he was right. Racing got away as planned by
mid-morning on day two in a medium and freshening offshore breeze with clear
skies. Hiking out was the order of the day.
The races were much closer on day two as the teams got
used to the boats, the currents and any vagaries of the local wind. There
were some real battles fought tooth and nail between the leading four boats.
In several races there was only a few seconds between first and last place.
One crusty old mariner who had been watching the action from the beach bar
remarked that evening “it was world class racing out there today”.
By lunchtime on day two the round robin had been won by
Jeremy Koo (MAS 333) with six points, who beat off some serious competition
in the process. Next was Maximilian Soh (SIN 154) with the same number of
points but he lost, literally, by inches to Jeremy in their match. Ayaz
Shaikh (IND 129) came third with five points just edging out Atool Sinha
(IND 425) with four points.
Bronze medalists Koo Racing
(Evernew).
Jon Ericksson (FIN 134) also had four points, but he lost
to Atool and so came fifth. It was not the ‘Fearsome Finn’s’ weekend (he
does not warm to that sobriquet, so we include it here) as he fell off the
stern of the boat during a prestart, and was not wearing a life jacket
either! This was in a match against Rolf Heemskerk (MAS 1043) who was
gentlemanly and/or sensible enough to stop match racing and head to the line
and start with a nice lead. Rolf won that race but overall he came sixth in
the round robin with two points.
Taking up the rear were the regatta’s unsung heroes:
Florent Herson (FRA no rank) who stepped into Morten Jakobsen’s shoes (THA
206), who had to dash off and work over the weekend to fix an offshore gas
pipeline, and Sinsupa Wannasuth (THA) who while an experienced and very
accomplished fleet racer was learning-by-doing in her first match races.
The round robin on day two was finished early enough to
allow a one-match race-off between the bottom four teams for fifth to eighth
places in which Rolf Heemskerk (MAS) beat Jon Ericksson (FIN) and Sinsupa
Wannasuth (THA) beat Florent Herson (FRA).
On day three we moved onto the semi-finals in which
Jeremy Koo (SIN) lost 1-2 to Ayaz Shaikh (IND) and Maximilian Soh (SIN) beat
Atool Sinha (IND) 2-0. Then onto the finals between Maximilian Soh (SIN) and
Ayaz Shaikh (IND).
The two finalists head
downwind.
In the view of many, Maximilian Soh (SIN) often had the
best boat speed of any team on the water, but in the view of some observers
perhaps occasionally lost out on strategy and tactics. In the first of the
final races the boats split off the start line with Ayaz correctly heading
out right where the wind was a bit stronger and the tide was slack. A large
gap opened up within 30 seconds and it became something of a procession
after that.
In the second race of the best of three final, the
Singaporean team picked themselves up, gave it a go, and opened up a lead of
four boat lengths by the top mark. The race was on. But later on the run
there was some indecision on the Singapore boat on whether to approach the
bottom mark on port or starboard? The compromise of a dead run with no pole
did not work out.
Maximilian remarked afterwards, “we got into a hole at
the bottom mark and I could hear the Indian boat gaining on us.” This
allowed Ayaz Shaikh to catch up and gain a vital few boat lengths on the
Singaporean youngster and get back in the match.
Ayaz did a better second top mark rounding and was barely
two boat lengths behind but crucially one boat length inside his opponent.
Ayaz promptly gybed away inshore and Maxi was a bit late on the gybe. This
allowed Ayaz to spill bad air onto the leeward boat and break the overlap
and then move ahead. Ayaz opened up enough of a gap to finally gybe to port
and cross the trailing starboard tack boat and head for the finish line. The
whoops of delight from the winning Indian boat could be clearly heard
ashore, which in any case at Varuna is only 30 meters from the start-finish
line.
In the petit-final, Atool picked up a penalty in the
pre-start and this helped Jeremy Koo clinch third place overall. Team Atool
Sinha was sponsored by Next Level Media and Team Koo Racing was sponsored by
Evernew.
Simon Makinson the Varuna Flag Commodore said, “The club
is very supportive of events like this and we are glad that we have another
match racing success under our belts. Our thanks go to our sponsor, Siam
Winery, the Race Committee led by Apple Asawawatanaporn, Race Officer Chris
Dando, and Chief Umpire Neil Semple (IJ).”
Team Finland take on Team
Singapore.
Team Sinsupa – the all Thai
girls team.

Last minute Ludo secures vital points for United
Horseshoe Point this month
Pattaya United’s Ludovick
Takam (left) scores the winning goal against Siam Navy FC in Sattahip
Stadium, Saturday, Sept. 17. (Photo/Ariyawat Nuamsawat)
Staff Reporters
Pattaya United had to come from behind to beat fellow
strugglers and local rivals Siam Navy 2-1 in Sattahip last Saturday, Sept.
17, and edge clear of the relegation dog fight.
United stated the match just five points clear of their
opponents who have been languishing in the relegation area for most of the
season, but it was Siam Navy who started the brighter of the two teams and
Brazilian Paulo Barbosa almost gave them the lead as early as the 7th
minute.
In response United had the ball in the back of their
opponent’s net 10 minutes later however the goal was ruled out after
Ludovick was adjudged to have fouled the Navy goalkeeper.
With Navy continuing to press, it came as no surprise
when the first goal went their way in the 21st minute of the game. Alex Da
Costa got free on the left edge of the Pattaya penalty area and his accurate
cross was headed in from 5 yards out by his compatriot Barbosa to send the
majority of the 3,500 fans into raptures. Barbosa was subsequently booked by
the referee for over exuberance in his goal celebrations and taking his
shirt off.
The setback of the goal seemed to act as a wake-up call
for Pattaya who began to exert more authority and control as the match
progressed. They got back into the game in somewhat fortunate circumstances
however when a speculative shot from Ludovick ricocheted into the path of
fellow strike partner O.J. Obatola and his attempt on goal was then
deflected by a Navy defender past the goalkeeper and into the net.
The second half was a far more tactical affair with both
teams finding it hard to carve out clear cut chances but just when it looked
as if the game was heading for an inevitable draw United struck in the final
minute to snatch all three points.
As the clock ticked into the 90th
minute, Obatola picked up the ball 20 yards out and ran straight at the Navy
defence before slipping a clever through ball to Ludovick who calmly lifted
the ball over the advancing keeper.
It was cruel luck on Siam Navy who would probably think
they deserved at least a share of the spoils but for United it could yet
prove to be an important moment as they edge away from the relegation zone
and into relative mid-table safety.
Pattaya United’s next fixture is a home game against SCG
Samut Songkhram FC at the Physical Education Institute Stadium in Chonburi
on Sunday, Sept. 25. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 pm.
There was good news for the region’s other teams last
weekend as Sriracha earned a vital 4-1 victory over bottom club Khon Kaen
and Chonburi ‘Sharks’ drew 0-0 at Muang Thong United in the League Cup
quarter-final to advance 3-2 on aggregate over the two legs. Chonburi will
next meet Buriram PEA in a semi-final to savour

Pattaya Cricket Club and new signings start season strongly
A fine all round performance from Pattaya Cricket Club
saw them easily defeat last season’s Bangkok Premier League winners Asian
Stars CC by 128 runs.
ASCC won the toss on a bright and hot Sunday morning and
invited PCC to bat first. New signing Debdas and Sunny looked a promising
future opening combination as they countered the hostile new ball attack and
then pressed on the scoring rate to record a 56 run partnership that formed
the platform for a competitive first innings total.
Debdas revelled in his role as opener and went on to
reach his own half century before departing caught in the covers for a well
constructed 63. Pintu and Mithu strangled the middle session of the innings
with their spin which extracted some alarming bounce, however the PCC
captain Simon Philbrook maintained the impetus of the innings with a hard
fought 59 runs before he finally succumbed to the excellent Dimple which
signalled the end of the innings, PCC posting a respectable 223 all out.
It was the turn of Yasir, PCC’s other new recruit, to
shine with the new ball. At times he was unplayable as he moved the ball
with pace and bounce that had the early batsmen hoping around the crease.
The pressure eventually paid off as Yasir removed both openers in the space
of 4 balls.
Usman continued the onslaught as Dimple fended a rising
delivery to cover point and ASCC were really on the back foot at 39 for 3.
Taufeeq (2 for 10) bowled beautifully to exploit the unusual bounce with his
left arm spin and wickets continued to fall.
Debdas was not finished, starring in a truly deserved man
of the match performance. Mazhar was caught off a steepler by Simon; the
next ball was edged to the keeper and the hat-trick ball was a full and
straight yorker that was far too good for the dangerous Mithu. The ASCC
innings finally concluded as Shan had the last man stumped and PCC won by
128 runs.
The performance represented a huge step up in standard
and progress for the club who will now look forward to the start of the
league season with high hopes of a top four finish and a place in the
play-offs.
PCC have practice nets every Wednesday from 4 p.m. and
Sundays from 11 a.m. (when there is no weekend fixture) and all are welcome.
The Club runs a 1st and 2nd team together with an over 50’s and junior team.
All are welcome and encouraged to come along. Details can be found on

Ben Fortt beats the ‘big guns’
Ben Fortt holds the trophy
after his win at the Thailand circuit, Sunday, Sept. 18.
Variety was the name of the game in the combined
Supersport and Superstreet round two at Thailand Circuit on Sunday,
September 18. As well as the screams and howls of four-cylinder 600s and
1000s, there was also the roar of a big twin and the thumping of 450
Supermoto singles. And it wasn’t only the sights and sounds of the bikes, it
was the riders too, with ages ranging from 17 to 62 and four different
nationalities, with Swiss, Italian and British lining up with Thai riders.
It was the veteran Meuhlebach who set the pace through
the weekend on his immaculate Moto2 Suter and took the overall and
SuperSport class win. The second round also saw the entry of David Conquest
on an equally well-prepared ex-Meuhlebach CBR600RR, who followed the Swiss
master into second place in the class.
The SuperStreet class with no limit to engine size saw
new entries from Ben Fortt, previously only seen at the track on his CEA
Suzuki GSX-R1000, bring his Supermoto 450 Husqvarna, with fellow exponent
Umberto Danelutti, who entered his 450 Honda, while R2M SuperBike SB2
regular Gaven Purisma turned up with a stunning new KTM 990 Super Duke
990cc. They lined up with the stripped Suzuki GSX-R1000 of PK Racing’s
‘Jack’ Peerapat Khun-Inn and the Yamaha R1 streetfighter of Panpund Team
owner, Jomphop Sassadee.
The main entertainment was provided by Jack-Peerapat and
Ben Fortt in their battle for the SuperStreet win and second place, with the
GSX-R1000 holding the advantage over the 17 year-old’s Husqvarna 450cc. In
contrast to the ‘stop, point and shoot’ approach necessary to muscle the big
Suzuki around the tight, technical circuit, Fortt treated the spectators and
TV audience to a display of controlled sliding, as he backed into the turns
and kept his corner speed high.
Although Fortt was unable to find a way past the bigger
bike, he maintained relentless pressure throughout the race, which paid off
on the last lap, when the Suzuki ran wide on the exit to turn six and then
toppled over which left Ben Fortt clear at the front to take 1st
place while Gaven took second ahead of Jomphop to complete the SuperStreet
podium.
Ben Fortt was delighted with his victory. Gaven had
struggled with suspension set up on his Superduke throughout the weekend but
was pleased to have muscled his enigmatic Austrian mount onto the podium.
The next round of the series will be at the Thailand
circuit on 15-16 October 2011.
