Sea fishing with the KPK Club
Mike Gerrard
Ahoy me mateys!
A very short report about today’s fishing on the 28th September 2011. Today
was privately booked by Goort Gelten and his son Eric (the Viking) -
handsome looking bugger ain’t he. Oh to be young again - happy days. Bill
Bruce (without his tamashantah) came along as well to make the numbers up to
four.
Eric
(the Viking) Gelten with his prize catch of the day.
What a beautiful day on the ocean it was as well, a lovely breeze, but not
enough to make big waves, with the sun peeking through occasionally.
The fishing was as varied as we normally get, except the big ones got away
this trip. Never mind, the catch of snapper and grouper the size of the one
in the photo made for a very enjoyable day.
We had decided we would take a couple of the fish along to our pal Giorgio
at Trattoria Italiana to cook for us and for himself as well. Sadly when we
got there we found out his restaurant was closed on a Wednesday. Never mind,
by this time I was ‘creamed-crackered’ and went home. Goort and his son went
to another restaurant and had the fish cooked for them. They reported the
next day that it was delicious.
This species (with the blue dots along its belly) is apparently very
expensive. Something like 1,000 baht a kilo I am told. This fish weighed 3
kilos easily.
Our next scheduled trip is on Saturday 8th October and there are a couple of
spaces available at this time of writing. Anyone interested should call me
(Mike) on 087 091 7565. Don’t worry if you have no tackle, all is available
as well as bait. All you have to do is supply your own food and drink.
Transport can be arranged as well. It’s a great day out on the ocean.
Happy hooking!

United win local derby:
Sharks suffer semi-final exit
Pattaya United’s Teeravekin Seehawong (center)
celebrates after scoring the winning goal at the Suzuki Stadium in Sriracha
last Sunday, Oct. 2 (Photo/Ariyawat Nuamsawat)
Staff reporters
Pattaya United secured local bragging rights last Sunday with a hard fought
1-0 victory over Sriracha FC at the Suzuki Stadium. Teeravekin Seehawong had
the travelling contingent of Dolphin supporters on their feet when he
latched onto a far post header by Paul Ekollo in the 77th minute of the game
to nod the ball past the Marlins keeper.
United dominated possession for large parts of the game but were fortunate
not to concede in the opening half when Narit was forced into pulling off a
point-blank save from the Sriracha left winger and soon after the home side
were denied again when a free kick struck the Pattaya woodwork and the ball
rebounded to safety.
Narit was again called on late on in the match to produce another excellent
close range save to ensure the team made the short return journey up
Sukhumvit Road with all three points in the bag.
The win continues Pattaya’s recent run of good form that has seen them take
13 points from their last half dozen fixtures. United’s next match is a home
fixture against BEC Tero Sasana on Sunday, October 16 at the IPE Stadium in
Chonburi, kick off at 6 p.m.
Sriracha meanwhile are left with the very real prospect of a swift return to
Division 1 unless they can put a run a wins together over the closing months
of the season. The Marlins next fixture is on Oct. 9 away at SCG Songkhram.
Whilst not involved in league action last weekend, Chonburi FC nevertheless
faced an important match with the second leg of the League Cup semi-final
against Buriram PEA. Trailing 1-0 from the away leg, Chonburi’s hopes took a
dive when Suchao Nutnum doubled the aggregate lead for Buriram after only 3
minutes of the match.
The Sharks fought back spiritedly though and despite being harshly reduced
to 10 men when Akpueze saw red, they managed to establish a 2-1 lead before
half time through goals by Silva and Pipob On-mo.
In the second half Buriram made their numerical superiority count and Franck
Ohandza equalized in the 70th minute but there was still time for On-mo to
grab his second of the evening and give Chonburi the win on the night,
however they were eliminated from the competition on away goals with the
aggregate score tied at 3-3.

Young soccer stars shine at St. Andrews charity tournament
Bangkok Patana School and St Andrews battle it
out on the field.
Matt Dunn
Downpours and thunderstorms could not dampen the spirits of the children and
parents who were brave enough to participate in the annual ‘One Day, One
Goal’ football competition held at St. Andrews School last week.
The event takes place in order to raise money for the ‘Luca Waugh
Foundation’ and also helps to raise awareness of pool safety. Luca is a
young boy who tragically fell into an unsupervised pool when he was 18
months old. After being clinically dead for several minutes he was
resuscitated and is now on the long road to recovery.
Several schools from the Eastern Seaboard together with two schools
travelling from Bangkok, took part in the games which saw over 250 children
participate. While some schools took home more medals than others, all of
the children, aged from 4 years – 13 years, who played had lots of fun.
An incredible 60,000 baht was raised so thanks must be given to those
students and parents who not only paid the entrance fee but also donated
some extra money to this event.
The St. Andrews School PE department would like to thank the Parent Sports
Committee for their help in raising money through their sales of delicious
hot dogs and refreshing drinks. Thanks must also go to all of the staff and
students who helped to make the day a great success!
Football players from Garden have fun in the
rain.
Mr Gary and the under 9 girls team from St
Andrews.
Mr Harrison, Headteacher at St Andrews School,
congratulates the students for a great day and reminds them about water
safety.

All at sea at Plutaluang
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
Monday, October 3, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
On Monday, 26th September the Pattaya Golf Society revisited the Royal Thai
Navy course at Plutaluang for the first time in more than three years,
hearing it was in good condition. It did not disappoint but the West course
greens were being sanded and the North course greens were at their
traditional slow speed.
With the white tees well back the field playing strokeplay found the course
difficult to cope with and there were more than a few nil returns. The main
culprit was the Lighthouse hole with a strong breeze blowing sideways and
the yellow posts around the green indicated there was no easy relief.
In third place with net 83 was Tore Eliassen whilst Wichai Tananusorn was
way ahead in second, a full ten shots clear. The winner was Paul Blackshaw
and his excellent round showing command in the wind helped him record net 69
for a fine win.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the whole group can look forward to trying the
course again soon, maybe on a calmer day.
Kato at his best
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Pattana on Wednesday, 28th
October to play a stableford competition over the B and C nines from the
white tees, all of 6,700 yards and counting! With a strong breeze blowing,
tees well back, soft fairways and little or no run the day was to be a
testing one for all but the longest and most accurate golfers.
With a plethora of low scores only Haruyuki Kato managed to play near his
handicap with a fine 35 points for the win. A country mile away sharing
second place were Masanori Takano and Len Jones with 25!
The difficult par threes proved a barrier to scoring birdies and poor
Masashi Iizumi finished his current stay with a nil return which won him the
Booby Bevy. It was indeed a tough day and playing from the yellows would not
have helped as on the B nine they were immediately next to the white!
Challenging times lie ahead for the PGS at Pattana.
Close call at Khao Kheow
On Friday, 30th September the Pattaya Golf Society ended a
testing week of golf with a visit to Khao Kheow to play a stableford
competition over the newly reopened A and B nines. Playing off yellows it
was to be another hard slog for many in the field, however it was much
closer than the previous encounters this week.
In third place with 28 points was Tony Thorne, still recovering from a virus
attack which had laid him low earlier. Sharing the win were Benny Hansen and
Wichai Tananusorn, both with 32 points.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by John O’Sullivan and Tony Thorne for their efforts
on B3 and B8 respectively and the Booby Bevy should have gone to Masa Takano
for his two poor rounds this week but the low scoring claims of Keith
Melbourne could not be denied. Thus the curtain was drawn on a tough week to
end the month with the PGS.

Trevor & John take the Medals
IPGC golf from The Haven
Sunday, Sept. 25, Green Valley -
Stableford
CSS 71
1st Peter Masters (10) 42pts
2nd Joe McArdle (11) 40pts
3rd Russell Exley (7) 37pts
4th Frank Dunstan (26) 33pts
After having to return to his profession as a school teacher Peter Masters
thought that his quest to become a single figure handicapper would have to
be put on hold until the next holiday period came around, but he has found a
new opportunity playing with the IPGC on a Sunday, and this week put it to
good use as he returned his lifetime best card with a gross 76 recorded.
This not only won the top prize, it also ensured that he achieved his wish
to get into single figures, as his handicap moved down to below nine.
Trevor
Schirmer.
It was not all plain sailing however as Joe McArdle also put in a fine
effort to come home just two behind and four under handicap but he had to
settle for second following Peter’s great round.
Russell Exley thought that he had a bit of a chance with a one under round
but finished well adrift in third with the ever-present Frank Dunstan
rounding out the list a few more back.
As usual the prizes were presented at the Golf Bar and indoor driving range
hosted by John and Jeff Ryves, who always make the golfers on Sundays and
Donovan’s competitions on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays very welcome.
Monday, Sept. 26, Treasure Hill - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Yoshitaka Iketani (19) 35pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (18) 33pts
3rd Alan Pilkington (9) 32pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (15) 32pts
‘Lift and place’ was the local rule for the day as once again the course of
the day was found to be extremely wet, as seems to have been the situation
almost on every occasion lately.
John
Dahlseng.
It was also decided to try and mitigate the conditions with the day’s play
designated to be from the shorter yellow tee positions. In the event there
was not a lot of difference between the white and yellows and therefore the
subsequent scoring was again found to be not up to the usual standard with
no player able to get it round in level handicap or better.
Yoshitaka Iketani proved to be the best at sloshing it round as he took the
top honours by two from fellow countryman Shuichi Kodaka.
Alan Pilkington won the first of his week’s tussles with Trevor Schirmer,
beating him into fourth place whilst taking third himself, with a better 17
to 16 in the count back.
Iketani
Yoshitaka.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Alan Pilkington and Trevor
Schirmer shared the first division pool which included some rollovers.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new member Peter Hart and also
welcomed back Mike Spear and Dai Griffiths who were both playing hookey from
watching Wales winning easily in the RWC, much to the disgust of their
fellow countrymen who found it unbelievable that any Welshmen could miss out
on the opportunity to see the national team win at rugby even though they
preferred to watch nodball usually.
There was also a farewell for Yoshitaka Iketani who was returning home to
Japan.
Wednesday, Sept. 28, Eastern Star - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Shuichi Kodaka (18) 31pts
2nd Frank Dunstan (26) 31pts
3rd Dai Griffiths (7) 30pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (15) 29pts
5th Ole Stamnes (27) 28pts
For the second time in the week the course was slightly over watered and if
there were such things as cart paths on the course, golf buggies would
surely have been restricted to them, but at least it might have been
sensible to make a ruling that those in use should stay in the rough, and
not leave it to the golfers to make that sensible decision.
Frank
Dunstan with The Ashes.
With the fairways giving little assistance from the tee as regards length it
was always going to be a long hard day, although to be fair to the course it
was in otherwise very good shape with the greens playing very flat although
understandably a bit on the wooly side.
Shuichi Kodaka went one better than his previous outing, and in the process
taking the top spot away from Frank Dunstan and denying him his second win
on tour, with a better count back of 19 to 15 after he had started a bit
slowly over the front nine.
Dai Griffiths used all his wiles to slide into third place although being a
long way short of his usual level of prowess over the links.
Trevor Schirmer kept up his record for the week of showing amongst the
leaders a further shot back and Ole Stamnes got an honourable mention anther
point behind him.
Finally there was a winner of the second division 2’s pool as Shuichi Kodaka
rounded off a very good day with the only one to clear out the rollover pot.
Dai Griffiths also had one in the first division to sweep the pot in that
division.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome back for Ole Stamnes and farewells for
Frank Dunstan and Bob Hopwood who were taking home to Oz fond memories of a
rare opportunity of seeing and holding the Ashes Cup and having a picture
taken of the occasion to be able to convince some of those back home that it
really happened. Also there were byes for Shuichi Kodaka and Dai Griffiths,
the latter returning to the valleys to catch up on the latest information
and movements of various super models on South Wales Club Land scene, that
he is hoping to get to play in some future movies that he will be producing
for the big screen.
Friday, Sept. 30, Phoenix (Blue tees) - Monthly Medals
CSS 73
Division 1
1st Trevor Schirmer (15) net 74
2nd Alan Pilkington (9) net 76
3rd Barry Wellings (5) net 79
Division 2
1st John Dahlseng (19) net 75
2nd Rod Howett (23) net 92
3rd Roar Berger (25) net 94
Playing from the blue tees is not the favourite pastime of many of the
contestants in the best of conditions and with the day’s competition being a
medal round to boot, it was surprising that there was just one no return as
the players strived to get their hands on of the two medals on offer for the
day.
Also up for grabs was a spot in the final Gold and Silver Medals to be held
in December contested by all the years’ previous winners.
Trevor Schirmer became the tenth winner and name on the list in the first
division with a solid one over CSS and two ahead of Alan Pilkington, with
Barry Wellings filling out the podium a further three back in third place.
The second division was also won by a first timer for the year as John
Dahlseng got to grips with the format, never trying to reach the green in
what would be regulation for a scratch golfer, and playing much more with
the top part of the body which resulted in a very steady round that left the
rest of the division spread-eagled around the course.
A long way back in second place was Rod Howett with Roar Berger another two
behind in third although both of them were also a fair bit ahead of the next
players.
With the course having been set at its most difficult when playing from the
blue tees, it was not surprising that there were no 2’s in either division.
Before the presentation of the prizes there were welcome backs for Barry
Wellings and John Dahlseng and a farewell for Rod Howett, returning to the
UK for a short break from the rigours of the Land of Smiles.
There was also news of Mike Sanders, who had returned home to Switzerland in
the middle of March and then had to visit a heart specialist in May when he
continued to feel unwell after suffering severe heartburn whilst staying in
Pattaya and was congratulated on having lasted so long, as in fact the
heartburn was in fact at least one heart attack. He subsequently had a few
stents inserted and is now recovering well but has since suffered from other
ailments that stop him from playing golf for the time being. We all wish him
a speedy return to golf and his friends here in Pattaya.
Note: The Haven group now departs Soi 13 at the earlier time of 9 am
until further notice. If you would like to play with the group you can
contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between
Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and
you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30
on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and 9.00am on Sundays on the days you wish to
play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Mikito marches to monthly award
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Sept. 27, Greenwood – Stableford
The town seems empty at the moment, or is that just my view of
the situation. Not only empty but wet and soggy - this is a bit of a
surprise as normally we get a few nice days.
Dick
Warberg (right) presents the golfer of the month award to Mikito Homma.
This, as I drove down to Bert’s, was not a particularly nice day, it was
spitting with rain and was overcast. The mood in Bert’s was also somber as
if the weather came in with us, however some of Bert’s hot coffee and a few
getting stuck into Bert’s golfers breakfasts soon brightened the players up.
There were remarkably few players as most of the real regulars seemed to be
away, however we were soon into cars and on our way to Greenwood, albeit
under rainy skies and a fair spattering of rain on the windscreen. As we
approached Greenwood the skies seemed to lighten but the hills were
surrounded by rain clouds so we wondered if we would ever play.
Booking in we were advised by the staff that carts were not allowed off the
paths and a check on the bunkers showed many of them to be badly washed out.
So off we went to play the A & C nines.
The first thing was that the fairways were well grassed but were wet and
finding a dry patch was at times difficult. The greens were also slower than
normal and the rough was pretty soggy. All in all it was going to be a
difficult day and although it was not pouring down it did at times sprinkle
us with rain and the covers were on the bags.
We moved on under the grey sky, and as said it continued to rain lightly
many times on the way around. We all hoped the rain would hold off until we
got in and it did, as the last group got to the last tee the rain started to
pour down, and it was nice to get into a hot shower.
We sat in the downstairs restaurant watching the rain come down before we
got on our way back to Pattaya. Yes it rained all the way back. Someone up
there likes the golfers, we usually manage to get the round in despite how
much rain we have had. I suppose there is a long way between Greenwood and
Emerald and somewhere is a course that can be played on.
Back at Bert’s it was into the results. Once again it was the last day of
the month, golf wise, and time for The MBMG Group ‘Golfer of The Month’. As
we went into the last day on the golf course the winner could be most
anyone, but Daryl Evans led from Mikito Homma and Mike Gaussa. It depended
on who had the best day.
So in third place was Allen Cole with 36 points on count back over Barry
Oats. In second we had Mike Gaussa with 39 points (Mike was one of those in
with a chance of being MBMG Group Golfer of the Month, but did he make it?)
The answer is no, as Mikito Homma won the day with 41 points and also took
the MBMG Golfer of The Month title for September. Well done.
Near pins were claimed by Joel Flor, Bob Watson and Mike Gaussa (2).

Smith designs a stylish victory
PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar
Brad Sproxton, the 40 point winner (far left),
and the Bangpra Boys from Wednesday’s comp.
Monday, Sept. 26, Green Valley - Stableford
1st John Pierrel (13) 36pts
2nd Grant Cadell (16) 36pts
3rd Henry O’Brien (18) 34pts
Our travelling golfer, John Pierrel has been playing very consistent golf of
late, mainly because he plays a lot of golf. Funny how that works! Four or
five rounds a week seem to do the trick. Last week at our Monday venue of
Green Valley he was second, this week he was first, and so goes the moral -
if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
(L to R): Ian Halfpenny with Paul Smith and a
sobbing Bob Newell.
It was a close race to the finish line between John and Grant Cadell and
only decided on count back in the end. You must hang in there and play those
last few holes well to ensure victory if a count back should be required.
A quick reminder, Richard is back in health and teaching at the range so go
see him or contact us for lessons to tune up your game.
Familiar faces Martin and son Brad Todd brought their mate Wayne Chatfield
to represent Australia for the comp and newbie Peter Thomas from Blighty
joined us on his first trip to Pattaya. Henry O’Brien, who has also been
playing quite well lately, turned in his card for a respectable 34 points
for third.
Wednesday, Sept. 28, Bangpra - Stableford
1st Brad Sproxton (12) 40pts
2nd Eddie Bielby (15) 33pts
3rd Steve Ellison (17) 33pts
The easy swingin’ Canadian from Red Deer, Alberta (and our former cat
wrangler) Brad Sproxton was the only guy out there today who made the game
look simple by carding 40 points for a big win at Bangpra. I guess he was
just so happy to get all of his hockey gear back!
The charming gentleman golfer Eddie Bielby gave it his all and took honours
for second with a 33 as his 19 on the back 9 was a shot better than Steve
Ellison who had 18 points.
Anybody seen the big monitor lizards lately? The course was in great shape
and we will be back. P.S. to Brad…Happy 48th mate!
Friday, Sept. 23, Mountain Shadow - Medal
1st Paul Smith (1) net 72 net
2nd Bob Newell (7) net 72 net
3rd Ian Halfpenny (12) net 73
Shattered - that’s the only word to describe Bob Newell as he walked off the
18th on Friday. He had a great round going until he met the 14th hole par 5
that ate him alive. A double bogey would have given him the title, but no,
Bob managed a (gulp) 9 –not a misprint- NINE on the #2 handicapped hole to
ruin the card.
Paul Smith is undisputedly one of the best golfers in Pattaya. Any pro would
be happy to card a 35 on the back nine at Mountain Shadow, especially on
those greens. So once again our congratulations go to 2-time Monthly Medal
Winner Paul Smith for a great display of how the game can be played,
shooting a fine 73 gross.
Ian Halfpenny had to witness Bob’s misfortune and still came good with a
great 73 net for third place.
Thanks to all who attended and see you next month for a fancy dress costume
party round for our next Monthly Medal Halloween at Green Valley. Paul’s
second star and 2 Antigua shirts are now in his closet.
Goodbye to Kalani Makaneole and welcome back to Phil Smedley, Warren
Holland.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro, off Soi Buakhao and
Soi Diana junction. We can be reached on 085 434 3377 or

O’Neill captures Seniors
title on debut
appearance
Nigel Cannon.
Thursday, Sept. 29 - Pattaya Country Club
There were 17 players in this month’s Diana Open, just enough
to have the usual 3 flights (Ladies, Seniors, and Super Seniors). The
course was in good order and not busy, and with the weather just perfect
all was set for a fine day’s golf.
Nigel
Cannon (right) with Ladies winner Chop Daprakhon and Seniors winner Martin
O’Neill.
We had 4 ladies today and in top spot, following a 3 month holiday in
France, was Chop Daprakhon (11) with 37 points. Runner-up was former PCC
caddy Laong Gatepratum (26) with 36 points, clearly using her knowledge of
the course.
It was a newcomer – playing in his first Diana Seniors – (Jing-Jo) Martin
O’Neill (29) who had the best score of the day with 41 points to win the
Seniors tournament. Runner up was that sociable Frenchman, Patrice Bardy
(17) with 34 points.
In the Super Seniors both Werner Schwarz (15) and Jean-Claude Coulon (32)
came with 38 points. On checking the cards Alan Pearce reported that Werner
was the winner with a better back 9. Werner had to leave before the
photograph was taken.
Near pin prizes were picked up by Jean-Claude Coulon, Vic Warren, Laong
Gatepratum and Nigel Cannon.
All scores are submitted to Pattaya Sports Club.
The next Diana Seniors and Ladies open is on Thursday 27th October at
Pattaya Country Club with a tee time of 0900. Sign-up sheets are at Diana
Green Bottle on 2nd road and the Diana Driving range.

Gareth fails to fill Barry’s boots
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, Sept. 25, Green Valley -
Stableford
1st Barry Copestake (15) 42pts
2nd Gareth Gill (7) 40pts
3rd Jan Eriksen (17) 39pts
Near Pins: No 4 Jan Eriksen; No 9 Alain Bellec; No 12 Bob Newell; No
16 Barry Copestake.
On a day when the numbers were a bit modest due to the Hua-Hin road trip
that Pierre had put together, the man on fire Barry ‘The Boot’ Copestake
returned with a good bit of zeal, as he enjoyed a two shot gap over the
field with a match winning 42 splendid points.
Barry
Copestake.
Barry is making a habit of putting the boot in as it was about four weeks
ago in the same Sunday comp he put a 44 point lashing on the gang. In fact
last Sunday’s winner Gareth Gill thought he had more than likely won again
with his rock solid 40 points, but it takes more than 40 points to— you got
it - fill Barry’s boots! Barry’s hob nail boot business took a giant step
forward as he received an order to kit out the infamous Scottish Bukie boot
boys gang (thanks Reg).
Following Barry and Gareth onto the podium was Jan ‘the silent assassin’
Eriksen just a stroke adrift. The principal was all fingers and thumbs as
his 38 points was good for nowt.
Jan Eriksen, Alain Bellec, Wayne Chatfield, Sim Davis and Bob Newell just
about got their money back in the 2,s comp.
Tuesday, Sept. 27, Pattana – Stableford
1st Fergus O’Brien (28) 37pts
2nd Christy Knight (22) 36pts
With a gang of around 20 solid core society members off to Hau-Hin for the
week, a small but quality and spirited field took on the Gussan designed
Pattana.
Fergus the ‘Irish rover’ O’Brien took the top notch in the one flight today
with a quality 38 points. Fergus was also the only player to better par.
Hot on Fergus’s well worn heels was the man from Swords Co. Dublin, Christy
‘Good’ Knight just a shot shy for the second spot.
Peter Don O’Corleone Henshaw slotted home the days only 2 to make it an
Irish clean sweep.
Wednesday, Sept. 28, St. Andrews – Stableford
1st Billy Britton (13) 33pts
2nd Colin Davis (16) 33pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (14) 33pts
The society, usually brimming with bravado when they attack St. Andrews, was
a bit meek on this day as the entire field failed to better par.
Irishman Terry Mangan has mentored Billy Britton well on his swing, but he
must have taught him how to play the inward nine as the excelling student
had the best homeward nine in the A Flight trio of himself Colin ‘the
Donkey’ Davis and Peter Don O’Corleone Henshaw. The Donkey took second
strictly on the strength of turning his card in. I am quite sure the Irish
pair ganged up on the Donkey.
Peter Henshaw did get his money back as he posted the only 2 of the day.
Friday, Sept. 30, Eastern Star - Stableford
1st Ed Delaney (25) 29pts
2nd Billy Britton (15) 27pts
I know there is nothing in a 29 accumulation of points that might in and of
its self warrant the headlines, nor is it enough to say that playing the
white tees at Eastern Star that one passes through villages on the way. But
consider the scribe has fifty two of these titles to come up with and that
twelve are supplied by the Monthly Medal winners. As he and the Beatles
tell, “it don’t come easy!”
In Eds defense and the defense of the handful of orienteers who joined him,
he did put the brakes on the red hot fellow Irishman Paddy Billy Britton.
Just to rub it in Ed notched the only 2 of the day to complete another Irish
rout.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi
13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is
provided.

Volpi victorious at Phoenix
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group
Tuesday’s top two with the staff
at the Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
The end of the month Trattoria Italiana sponsor day on Sept. 27 was
a truly Italian Job in two ways. Not only was it an Italian, Sergio Volpi,
who won, but the man himself Giorgio Baccioli made his comeback after one
year out through injury. A long applause welcomed him back into the game.
We also welcomed two newcomers this week: They were Ted Gardner and Nico
(who joined us on the first tee), with David Czernie and Tim Mason making
welcome returns after their travels abroad.
Playing medal/stroke play today it was Sergio Volpi who scored a net 73 to
claim the Trattoria Italiana voucher, with Barry Copestake on the same score
edged into second place. The same thing happened for third place which went
to Bob Neylon who edged out John Bartley after both scored net 75’s.
The near pin winners were, Barry Copestake, Eamon Murtagh, Giorgio Baccioli
and Tony Hill.
The winners of the lucky draw prizes (sponsored by our hosts The Relax Bar
at Ban Am Phur) were John Bartley, Ted Gardner (free drink) and David

Bertram blitz at Eastern Star
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Pattana winners: Paul Smith
and John Harvey.
Monday, Sept. 26, Pattana – Stableford
The A course at Pattana is still shut and with the management predictions of
reopening mid-December with new grass on some of the holes and more
undulating fairways, we will see what occurs.
There was light drizzle overnight here in Jomtien and a few spots on the
windscreen as we headed up the 331 but a cool enjoyable round was had by
all. The cut was up to 18 in division 1 in the stableford competition and
19+ in division 2 and the best score of the day was returned by John Harvey
in the second tier with 34 points. Russell Benson came in second with 29
points and in third place was Terry Redding with 28.
In division 1 and playing off handicap 2, Paul Smith beat Kari Kupairinen
(H/cap 5) on a 14/13 back-nine count back after they both came in with 32
points. Barry Welling was in third after scoring 30 points.
Kari Kupairinen and Chris Voller split today’s top division ‘2’s pot with
birdies on B3 and C2 respectively while division 2 carried over to Bangpra
on Wednesday.
Wednesday, Sept. 28, Bangpra - Stableford
There were eight groups out today in an individual two divisional
stableford competition plus a 1-2-3 team event sponsored by the rollover
kitty.
It was very soggy underfoot on the first hole so “pick, clean and place”
came into play from the second tee onwards. It was a painful 5 hour round
today for all of us here as we were stuck behind three groups of holiday
makers. As from the first of November here the earliest tee time we can book
is 11.42 am, so the prospect of a five hour round, which is normal for that
time of the year, plus a 50 minute journey back afterwards means we will be
avoiding this course until next May.
Andy Oz recorded the best score of today, winning division 2 with 36 points.
Tom Novak was second six points behind and the French boy Jean Morel
finished third with 27.
In division 1 there were four cards in with 35 points; Kari Kupairinen beat
Mike Missler 20/17 on the back-nine count back for first and then Mike beat
Paul Smith on a 13/11 back six count back for the runner up spot. Poor old
Mikael Andersson lost out with 16 on the last nine holes.
This was a tough test of golf today with three of the par threes between 180
and 209 yards. Near pins went to Frank Kelly, Kari Kupairinen (2), Neville
Scurell, Joe Kubon, Adam Oyston and Andy OZ.
Normally the 1-2-3 comp winners are in the 83-88 points frame but today with
the tough conditions we saw in second place Noi Emmerson, Paul Smith and
Game Malanpoothong losing out on a back-nine count back of 46/50 after
scoring 72 points. The winners on the same score were Andy Baber, Bryan
Rought and Neville Scurrell.
In the ‘2’s Kari K scooped the pot in division 1 after a birdie on the 12th
and a double rollover ensued in division 2 to Emerald on Monday.
It is Bon Voyage to Terry Redding and Neville Scurrell who are back to Oz
and Andy Baber joins them next week as well.
Friday, Sept. 30, Eastern Star - Stableford
We have a few more ladies enrolling into Jomtien Golf and the
I.P.G.C. so we are back to where we were two years ago with 6/7 ladies in
their own division and competition and two for the men until we reach
November, when it will be three divisions.
It was a 50/50 decision regarding “pick, clean and place” today on the
fairways as we headed down the first as there were a few worm moulds on this
hole and the next two but we decided to play under normal conditions. The
weather predictions for this area were for torrential thunderstorms and
heavy rain from Vietnam, but this did not occur.
Seven groups out today and the Burapha caddie, Miss Kung lost out to Yuza
Reginuissen on a 18/17 back-nine count back after they both came in with 32
points in the ladies division.
The best score of the day for the men was in division 1 with Bill Bertram
winning with 40 points ahead of Frank Kelly in second on 35 and Darryl Blair
third with 33.
In division 2 with 17 points on the front nine and some steady golf
throughout, the organiser chipped in with his third shot from 100yds on the
par-four 16th, stroke index 1, for five points and won division 2 with 39 in
total. Jim Lane was second with 35 points and in third place came Mr No Car
Andy Baber on 29.
Near pins went to Toi Blair, Mikael Andersson, Bill Bertram, Chris Voller,
Josie Monks, Bill Bertram and Joe Kubon.

Clive well clear at Crystal Bay
PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, Sept. 27, Crystal Bay -
Stableford
As the headline suggests, we were at Crystal Bay on Tuesday with the C & B
combination being our test of the day. Clive Hoseason (H/cap 30) handed out
a nice old hiding to his playing partners, recording an outstanding 42
points. Brian Maddox (21) thought he was in with a good show after signing
for 37 points, only to find himself in the silver spot.
Clive
Hoseason & near pin specialist Ray outside Mulligans Lakeside.
Near pins were picked up by Ray and Jeff, with 2 each, though none were
converted in to ‘2’s.
Thursday, Sept. 29, Greenwood - Stableford
A fine week of golf for the ML crew concluded Thursday at
Greenwood with the C & A being our test. The course was in good nick despite
the recent rains, although the greens were a little slower than expected.
Jeff Wylie (H/cap 6) led the way with a modest (compared to Clive’s Tuesday
round) 34 points, followed in by Dave Edwards (15) who signed for 31.
Three near pins were secured by Jeff, again none converted, while one went
un-won for a Banglamung Boys Home donation.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday, with
presentations at the course Tuesday & Mulligans Lakeside hosting on
Thursdays. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you

Mashi victorious again
PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Blackburn
Monday, Sept. 26, Eastern Star – Stableford
Most of the fourteen golfers signed up for the competition at
Eastern Star had not played the course for quite a while and were looking
forward to the challenge after hearing good reports.
Ronnie
Ratte, The Admiral & Mashi Kaneta at Eastern Star.
We departed the Kronny at 0818 hrs after welcoming back Ken & Wendy Bernek
from their vacation and yours truly attempting a comeback after a 3 week
layoff due to a slipped disc. It was also necessary to say farewell to
Ronnie Ratte who was about to return to his work in Korea.
After a 40 minute drive we arrived at the course to find it fairly quiet, in
fact we were able to tee off at our leisure. Our first group, a threesome,
got away at 0925 hrs in terrific golfing conditions, not too hot with a
gentle breeze and found the course in very good condition although quite wet
in parts due to the recent rains. Very little run on the fairway made the
long par 4’s even longer and the greens were fine and will improve even more
in the coming weeks.
We cruised through the front nine in one hour and forty five minutes without
the necessity to stop for a drink break. Slowing down somewhat on the back
nine with a couple of drink stops we completed our round in the excellent
time of three hours & forty five minutes.
Mike
Allidi.
We had 2 Flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 15 and B Flight for 16 and
over.
The course proved to be the winner on the day with no-one playing to their
handicap or better and the very consistent Mashi Kaneta’s 35 points was
enough to take out first place in A Flight. Aussie Paul Avery finished
second with 33 points and Mikito Homma was third with 28 points.
It was a fine farewell game for Ronnie Ratte who finished first in B Flight
with 33 points and there was a count back for second & third with Mike
Winfield (18 point back nine) edging out Ken Bernek (14 point back nine)
with both of them having 31 points.
A Flight (0-15)
1st Mashi Kaneta (14) 35pts
2nd Paul Avery (9) 33pts
3rd Mikito Homma (15) 28pts
B Flight (16+)
1st Ronnie Ratte (26) 33pts
2nd Mike Winfield (21) 31pts
3rd Ken Bernek (16) 31pts
A few of us, including myself breathed a little easy as the Compass Cap was
not present along with Deefa the Dog who will be returning on Thursday at
Bangpakong.
Thursday, Sept. 29, Bangpakong – Stableford
Today was our much anticipated monthly visit to the classy
Bangpakong Riverside Country Club and it was no surprise that all available
spots (20) were taken. We welcomed Chris Stewart and Wayne Chatfield from
Mandurah, Western Australia and also Paul Seaford from the U.K. Also big Dr.
John Naponick from Cambodia joined us along with Barry Collier from Hong
Kong and Allen Cole from Hawaii.
We departed the Kronny five minutes ahead of our scheduled 0815 hrs
departure time in 2 mini vans and a speedy journey saw us arrive at the
course one hour & five minutes later. The car park was fairly devoid of
vehicles which indicated that there would not be too much of a delay in
teeing off and that indeed was the case.
Our first group got away 15 minutes early at 0945 hrs in terrific conditions
for golf and as usual the golf course was in magnificent shape with the
greens beautifully presented. I made the mistake of starting with a birdie
on the first hole which traditionally condemns me to a poor round and that
indeed was how it turned out.
We “flew” round the first nine in just 2 hours including a short drink stop
but slowed down considerably on the back nine due to a very slow Thai
four-ball in front of us. I guess the highlight of the day was Mike
Winfield’s first ever 5 pointer as he birdied the par five 12th and I guess
we’ll be hearing about it over & over again in the next few weeks. After a
couple of enforced drink breaks due to the slow play in front our round was
completed in four and a half hours.
We had 2 Flights with A Flight for 0 to 15 and B Flight for handicaps 16 and
over. There were rewards for nearest the pins on the four par threes and
longest first putts sponsored by yours truly on the ninth & eighteenth.
Mike Allidi was a late inclusion in the field due to a cancellation the
afternoon before and he celebrated by shooting 69 off the stick and won the
A Flight with 41 points. A fine round of golf by this talented golfer who is
a model of consistency. Aussie Martin Todd came second with an excellent 39
points and after a count back to decide third & fourth Takeshi Hakozaki (20
point back nine) edged out Wayne Chatfield (18 point back nine), both having
35 points.
B Flight was well won by Graham Buckingham with 38 points and another count
back saw Mike Winfield (19 point back nine) finish second from Walter
Baechli (17 point back nine), both having 36 points. Fourth spot was won by
Martin Todd’s son Brad on 35 points.
A Flight
1st Mike Allidi (2) 41pts
2nd Martin Todd (7) 39pts
3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (13) 35pts
4th Wayne Chatfield (5) 35pts
B Flight
1st Graham Buckingham (23) 38pts
2nd Mike Winfield (21) 36pts
3rd Walter Baechli (17) 36pts
4th Brad Todd (25) 35pts
Near Pins: John Naponick, Chris Stewart, Chris Stewart & Alain Taddei
Long Putts: Martin Todd, Wendy Bernek
The Compass Cap returned and was well won by Wendy Bernek and Toddy paraded
Deefa the Dog who was given plenty of charity donations by the ever generous
Café Kronborg crew.

Cunningham triumphs at Burapha
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, Sept. 26, Khao Kheow –
Stableford
It is a shame that one of the best laid out courses around is in
such poor condition. We know they have many problems with the weather and
there is much on-going work but it is difficult to entice the punters here,
even with the cheap green fee. The high season is only a month away and the
Outback rate will only be going up by 100 baht, although it is reported that
the caddie fee will be going up from 250 to 300 baht. Shared carts go to 700
baht but the single cart user will still pay only 400.
We’re going to stick with them for the time-being, if for no other reason
than the excellent high season rate, as we are confident the course will
return to its more familiar condition shortly and if not then we will only
then consider going elsewhere.
Dennis Pelly made the most of the small field of just 14 Outbackers playing
the A & B nines, winning the day with 35 points from Murray Hart on count
back. A special welcome today also to Nuan Keddie who joins us again with
her non-playing husband from Tasmania.
There was just one ‘2’ from Jim Payne on hole A5.
Dennis Pelly (13/Hi12.5) 35pts
Murray Hart (14/Hi13) 35pts
Nuan Keddie (17/Hi18.6) 34pts
Tuesday, Sept. 27, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
So, are darker days ahead for Pattaya Country Club now that they’ve lost
their green-keeper? Certainly the inexplicable set up of the course on
Monday for Turnip’s regulars, playing from eight back tees makes one wonder,
as the course obviously played tougher than the standard par, which will
play havoc with the slope and rating.
Never mind, it can be easily explained, they were resting some of the white
tees and come Tuesday everything was back to normal except for one hole, the
17th, still with the very back tee; they must have forgotten to move it
forward – no rhyme nor reason otherwise. Come on Pattaya C.C., don’t undo
all the good work you’ve done.
Johnny Cogan tucked a little win under his belt on Monday, which cost him
0.6 of a shot and the win today, as he was beaten on the line by Laong
(34pts), the good lady who takes care of Frank O’Neill. The day’s organiser,
Chad crept into third with 32, after an excellent back nine, and Dave beat
Nigel on count back into fourth, both on 31.
There was only one ‘2’ from Dave Earthrowl on hole 12.
1st Laong Gatepratum (27/Hi26.4) 34pts
2nd John Cogan (14/Hi15.7) 34pts
3rd Barry Chadbourn (17/Hi18.3) 32pts
Wednesday, Sept. 28, Burapha – Stableford
It wasn’t that wet really today but carts were not allowed on the
fairways; as the 22 Outbackers played the B and D loops off the whites all
the way round with the front nine tees well forward but the back couldn’t
have got any further back.
There were a couple of funny incidents out there today with two balls being
stolen by crows, the Capt’ was playing his third shot from the tee on B2,
yes I know you are meant to be playing your first; but that one went so far
into the rubbish right, it was where even the elephants fear to go. Anyway
back to the story, playing his third, a beautiful shot - 40 yards from the
green; as we get to it, a crow came out of the trees and stole it. The same
thing happened to John O’Keefe on the eighteenth, obviously the crows like
new golf balls.
There was a Roo Cup played for today and was won by Lloyd Shuttleworth and
Capt’ Bob, sorry Cottie and Hoggy but you can’t just leave it for too long
boys but we’ll be waiting for you when you return.
Anyway the scores today were quite remarkable; some very good and some very
ordinary as the course played one shot easier than par, but John Cunningham
came out of the woodwork with a fantastic 39 points to win Div A with the
day’s top score plus he had two ‘2’s. Second went to Lloyd on 38.
The scores in Div B weren’t quite so high but very solid around the 34
points mark with Bob Lindborg edging them all out with 35.
Welcome to John Urquart having his first game with the Outback and I’m sure
not his last and also welcome back to Don Pavlovic whom we haven’t seen for
a while.
There were five ‘2’s from John Cunningham on B3, Paul Bourke & Carl Luke on
B8, Bob Lindborg on D2 and another one from John also on D8.
Div A (0–12)
1st John Cunningham (9/Hi7.6) 39pts
2nd Lloyd Shuttleworth (7/Hi5.9) 38pts
3rd Paul Bourke (11/Hi9.4) 36pts
Div B (13+)
1st Bob Lindborg (21/Hi18.4) 35pts
2nd Pete Stonebridge (16/Hi14) 34pts
3rd Carl Luke (18/Hi15.8) 34pts
Friday, Sept. 30, Green Valley – Stableford
The 32 Outbackers got away about 30 minutes early with no rain
and a good cloud cover which made for a great day of golf. The only thing
that wasn’t good were the greens. To say they were woeful would be an
understatement - they were bloody awful. Hopefully they will be better next
week although they couldn’t possibly get worse.
We welcomed Joe Duffer playing with us for the first time off a +2 handicap
scoring 36 points, the best of the day, together with Dennis Pelly (Div B
winner) and Murray Hart (Div B runner-up). Well done you three and good luck
Joe on the seniors tour.
Welcome also to Ian Hart and to a couple of friends of Nuan Keddie all of
whom played some good golf: May Mitchell won Division C with 34 points and
Arisa came third on 31, with Nuan in fourth, whilst Ian took second in the
same Div with 32.
There was another Roo Cup challenge by Neil Lavery and Steve Mann which was
won by them on the last 2 holes. Well done fellas but never fear, it will
get back to its rightful owners.
There were six ‘2’s from Kissy on hole 4, Neil Lavery & Paul Squibb on hole
9, Paul Bourke & Neil Lavery again on hole 12, and Joe Duffer on hole 16.
Div A (0–10)
1st Joe Duffer (+2/Hi0) 36pts
2nd Paul Bourke (9/Hi9.4) 33pts
3rd Kerry Beck (9/Hi9.5) 33pts
Div B (11–16)
1st Dennis Pelly (12/Hi12.5) 36pts
2nd Murray Hart (12/Hi13) 36pts
3rd Keith Buchanan (14/Hi14.8) 33pts
Div C (17+)
1st May Mitchell (17/Hi19.4) 34pts
2nd Ian Hart (18) 32pts
3rd Arisa (18/Hi20.4) 31pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road
along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a
hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or give Bob a call on
087 941 2474.

Murphy on top once more
PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar
Dale Murphy (left) with Larry
Emerson.
There was a good turnout this Sept. 28 at the Pattaya
Country Club and the weather gods were kind to all. The course was in good
shape and we hope that the typhoon hitting up north does not come down to
Pattaya for a visit.
This being the end of the golfing month for Three Sisters, it was the
monthly trophy competition. Coming in to Caddy Shack II the lead changed
several times. On final count the top man was (surprise, surprise) Dale
Murphy with a total of 35 points. Not far behind was Larry Emerson with a
34. Bill Thompson had a 33 for third followed by Rich Murphy with a 32.
Herbie showed up with the usual hot dog fare and they were enjoyed by all.
Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League
200 Bowlers: Mai, Tue, Ooy &
Sue.
Bavaria moved into first place after winning three points
from Brother D. Rich Murphy bowled a 508 series for Bavaria and Sue Murphy,
Brother D, bowled a 211 game and 525 series.
Ooy Pluemkamon bowled a 213 game and 562 series to lead VFW Post 9876 to a
three point win over Canada. Tue Pettae had a 226 game and 581 series for
Canada.
Green Tree won three points from Indiana behind Mai Munsitha’s 556 series
which included a 218 game.
Tea Party and Café Kronborg split their match with each team getting two
points. Kran Nielsen bowled a 518 series for Kronborg.
