Representatives from 10 Southeast Asian countries outlined proposals for
coordinated responses to natural disasters, migrant laborers and human
trafficking at a National Defense Studies Institute workshop in Pattaya.
The Aug. 26 session at the A-One Royal Cruise hotel saw 23 officials from 10
member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations discuss the role
of ASEAN in “enhancing human security.”
Defense-studies institute director Pol. Col. Wutthinun Leelayut opened the
session, introducing Strategic Studies Centre director Pol. Maj. Chaianand
Jankhananurak, who lectured on the role of alien workers in ASEAN.
The afternoon half of the seminar opened the floor to attendees from each of the
10 countries represented. They shared their opinions about cooperation and
presented a joint working paper on an “integrated management approach to
humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.”
The Strategic Studies Center will submit the meeting’s conclusions to the
Ministry of Defense for further discussion on creating cooperation. That report
will be presented at the next ASEAN defense ministers meeting.
