Schumi shafted in Austrian Upset

The F1 round at the A1 Ring in Austria was certainly a race of upsets and reversed fortunes. Following some boredom amongst the F1 fans, where everything has been just so cut and dried, just read and absorb the following currently accepted “facts”. “Hakkinen has dropped his bundle” - he hasn’t, he took pole and won by a country mile. “Schumacher always outqualifies Barichello” - he didn’t, Barichello was 3rd and Schumi 4th. “Wurz always crashes” - he didn’t. “Herbert never finishes” - he did. “Villeneuve always beats Zonta in qualifying” - he didn’t. “Team mates don’t crash into each other” - they did. “Jenson Button will never beat Ralf Schumacher” - he did, and came fifth as well. “An Arrows will never run as high as third” - one did, in de la Rosa’s hands. “If nothing else, they always get both Jaguars ON the grid” - they didn’t.

The end of the race for Schumacher - turn one!

So to the race. 21 started from the grid with poor old Burti on his F1 debut starting from the pit lane as his first Jaguar got its tail caught in the pit gate or something. The field all approached turn 1 with Coulthard in the McLaren Mercedes running out of his brave pills and giving the corner away to his team mate Happy Hakkinen.

But behind them came the action. Zonta, probably believing his advertising of “Lucky Strike”, tried one on Barichello, while Trulli in the Jordan tried to slip a B&H up Schumacher’s exhaust pipe. All hell broke loose as the two Ferrari’s waltzed towards destruction. With a swift avoidance, the closely following Pedro Diniz sent Fisichella straight into the wall. The end result was goodnight Herr Schumacher, and the race lost its flavour from then on in.

When the field eventually settled down, apart from the McLarens in first and second places, the rest was chaos, with all sorts of unlikely lads up the sharp end. Pedro de la Rosa in the Arrows third, with Barichello in the almighty Ferrari a distant 4th! Johnny Herbert’s Jaguar was still running after five complete laps and was in 5th from 16th on the grid and Jenson Button’s BMW Williams 6th from 18th grid slot.

However, they all started to play the usual follow my leader, with the only action being done by Jean Alesi in the hopeless Prost, who will attempt to pass anyone, anywhere, any time.

De la Rosa’s fine third place came to naught when the engine expired on lap 32, there being much tears in the sangria that night, for sure. This handed third to Barichello’s Ferrari and they ran on to the finish in that order, with Happy 12 seconds in front of Coulthard and Barichello 30 seconds behind him. 4th, and a lap down was Villeneuve, 5th Button and 6th Mika Salo in the Sauber. Johnny Herbert did finish, but in 7th and pointless - as has been the entire Jaguar Racing Team effort this year.

As usual, the “professor” Alain Prost’s team did not finish, but at least it was not mechanical maladies - this time Alesi tried centre-punching Heidfeld at the hairpin and both retired in a shower of carbon fibre and assorted other bits. Undoubtedly, the professor would have had them both in the headmaster’s office at 9 on Monday morning!

At the time of printing, the points now stand as follows - M. Schumacher Ferrari 56, Coulthard McLaren 50, Hakkinen McLaren 48, Barrichello Ferrari 36. However, the greatest upset might yet be the disqualification of Hakkinen for technical irregularities in the electronic ‘black box’. The FIA are holding court, so Happy might be even less happy than usual!

The next round is the German GP on the 30th of this month. Will Zonta be able to repeat his earth-shattering moves? We shall see.

Pattaya vies for the “Formula Windsurfing World Championships 2000”

Eastern Region Windsurfing Club needing 600,000 Baht to support it

The Eastern Region Windsurfing Club presented plans for organising a world-class windsurfing competition to the Pattaya City Athletic Committee. The competition, called the “Formula Windsurfing World Championships 2000”, would be held in front of the Pattaya Park Beach Resort Hotel from 1-9 December this year. The plan was well received by the Athletic Committee, although the plan also includes a request for 600,000 Baht from the city to support the competition. The Eastern Region Windsurfing Club, through the Thai Windsurfing Association, received approval from the International Board Association to organise the windsurfing competition last year but indicated 2-million bath in supporting funds would be necessary.

Members of the Eastern Region Windsurfing Club said the competition would have 160 contenders from 40 counties around the world and convinced the Pattaya Athletic Committee that the sporting event would help build the city’s world-wide reputation while helping attract tourists to Pattaya.

While the Athletic Committee members were with happy with the concept, the request for 600,000 Baht to support the event could be complicated, since the city administration is in the process of finalising the coming year’s budget requests and this event is not included. However, the Athletic Committee agreed to set up a meeting with city council members and the members from the Eastern Region Surfing Club and the Thai Windsurfing Association to discuss the possibilities.

First Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League ends

The First PSC Bowling League of the year ended on 30 June 2000 with second and third place being decided on the last day of the league. Captain Tue and her team of Sven, Pin and Toy captured first place.

PSC bowlers celebrate at the end of a succesful league

Captain Jeed won second place with Tony, Morn and Wan. Coming in third was Captain Suda, Jon and Ow. Men and Ladies trophies for High Series Scratch went to Otto with a 570-pin fall and Mio with 586. Fritz won high Series with Handicap with 648 and Pin with 691. Jon with a great 232 and Tue with a greater pin count of 242 nipped high Game Scratch. High Game with Handicap goes to Konrad with 236 and Toy with 252. Every league it appears that the Ladies knock down more pins than the men in every category.

The Bowling Party and awards party was held at the Mai Kai Room of the Tropicana Hotel on 18 July 2000. Without a doubt the friendship amongst the PSC bowlers made for a splendid evening of fun and entertainment.

The second league of the millennium started on 14 July 2000 with eight teams, picked by a draw, testing the lanes and the Pattaya Bowl. Tue started the league just as she finished the last one with three strikes and winning the first beer of the near league.

All Pattaya Sports Club members are welcome to come out and join with the league anytime during the league which will run from July to December 2000.

International Charity Football Match on again

Following last year’s ‘no-show’ by the French team in Pattaya, all eyes will be on the frog legs to see if they can repeat their Euro 2000 win. Trying to stop them are the well outfitted Belgians, who showed last year why they were not the finalists, the Thailand team and the Brits from Delaney’s (last year’s noisy champions).

Kick off from 10 am Sunday 23rd at the Pattaya Orphanage centre with all profits going to charity. Information from Patrick 01 687 2410, Kim Fletcher 710 641 or Harry Riley 720 536.

Pattaya bids for new “Extreme” Sports Festival

Influential members of the Pattaya Sporting Set (PSS) are reported to be forming a consortium to host the Extreme Sports Festival (ESF) in Pattaya.

Events proposed for the ESF include cordless bungee jumping, paintball tournaments using real bullets, downhill Skateboard races on Pratumnak hill and Baht bus baiting.

Sources close to the consortium said that once approval is given by City Hall it would be necessary to raise a public subscription to fund the amphitheatre for the ring events. The estimated cost to Pattaya would only be in the region of 2 billion Baht and this should all be recouped by ticket sales.

Natavud dominates Bira

The local Thailand Touring Cars championship round 3 was held at the Bira circuit last weekend. Pole sitter, and never headed was the professional, smooth Natavud in the works Toyota Team Thailand Corolla Altis.

His team mate “Pete”, though second after qualifying had a flywheel problem and was a non-starter for the event. The much vaunted Singha beer team of Ekprawat, Apathorn and Amarin all failed to finish, leaving the other podium positions to Jakphong and Waraporn in the Honda Civics.

The next round of the championship is September 3rd.

PH3 Run 853

I arrived at the new Hare House (The Scandi Bar) at 1620 hours and signed up with Fossil and Pinky. I noticed that there was no map on the hash sheet and was told that the A-site was on Sukhumvit road opposite the Mercure Hotel. I got a lift with Bald Head and Fossil and we headed off to the A-site. We passed the Mercure Hotel, made a U turn and went back down Sukhumvit. There was no hash sign to mark the A-site so we missed it the first time around. We went around again and by this time the bus had arrived. the bombsite, sorry A-site which was indeed opposite the Mercure Hotel, behind a garage and the local refugee camp and beside their latrine, which accounted for the smell. The GM formed his circle and as usual the new shoes were dealt with. Hares Compost Heap and Butt Weasel On in to tell us about the run, the paper was multi coloured and checks and F.T,s were red.

The run itself was on roads and tracks at the back of Banglamung. The multi coloured paper blended in well with the vegetation and so was hard to find. I ran about 20% of the track but as I don’t like running on tarmac I walked most of it. I arrived back at the A-site via Sukhumvit road off paper. A boring run I thought. As the run was a bit of a let down, I was looking forward to an entertaining circle, and was not disappointed. The GM formed his circle again. First the lovely Ewok On in to conduct the raffle. All the prizes were won by cracks apart from Missing Personality who was promptly iced to mark his success. Hares On in. Much grumbling and muttering from the jostling mob. Were they baying for blood? Would Benny the Nerd lose his funny hat this week? Next we had returners on in followed by Ewe who was iced for being the only leaver. Visitors on in for a down down. As the ice was vacant, Bulls, Dog T and Flying Finn were asked to take a seat. Hashers Benny the Nerd and our beloved F Nose on in for a taste of the ice.

Now the moment that the jostling mob had been waiting for, the circle was handed over to the bad R.A. Hares Compost Heap and Butt Weasel on in with Benny the Nerd and The Pope. Sir Airhead briefly reviewed the run. The lack of map to the A-site, the condition of the site itself and the smell. We were informed that Butt Weasel had been asked to hare this run at the last minute and there were several shouts of Hash Hero but the jostling mob were in an ugly mood and crying for blood. Who was going to get it? Butt Weasel the hash hero was not a candidate, but what about Compost Heap, but because of his services to the hash over the years he escaped. That left Benny the Nerd and The Pope. The Pope was voted new hash S, then Benny the Nerd lost his hat for all of five seconds. At last the blood lust of the jostling mob was sated. The circle was handed back to the GM who dealt with Virgins and sponsors for down downs. Two anniversaries this week, Sweet plum happy birthday and Compost Heap hared 10 runs. Congratulations! Next the hare’s song delegated to the Master of Music Chicken F who sang the old favourite ‘The LBFM’ song. Finally the hash hymn and back to the Scandi Bar for some of Pegleg’s excellent food. A good day overall, see you next Monday.

Fitness Tips: The Beginners Guide to choosing a sports shoe - Part 2

by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club

G’Day All,

Go and dig out last week’s Pattaya Mail where I described in detail how to work out what kind of foot action you have. So what did you decide?

It is important to remember that a certain degree of pronation is normal and even functional in walking and running. Problems can arise when we pronate too much. A person who ‘over pronates’ needs a shoe that controls this inward lean. This is best achieved by choosing a shoe that has a solid plastic heel counter and firm mid-soles that have higher density, more supportive materials on the medial (inside) aspect of the shoe. Pronation control shoes also tend to be designed in a ‘straight’ style (last) in other words, if you look at the sole of the shoe it is difficult to tell whether you’ve got a right or left shoe in your hand.

Conversely, if your are a supinator, your foot doesn’t absorb shock very well and you will need a shoe to compensate for that. Look for a style that provides extra cushioning and some extra stability in the shoe, as supinators have greater tendency to ‘roll’ their ankles.

Some other tips to remember:

When you’re seeking professional advice in your pursuit of the perfect shoe, you need to get each of your feet measured from heel to toe, from heel to arch and across the width to ensure that each shoe fits you correctly. It is also important to leave about 1cm between your longest toe and the end of the shoe so you foot has plenty of room to move. A recent survey showed that 85% of American women had experienced foot problems due to wearing a sports shoe that is too small.

Never judge the size of your sports shoe by the size of your casual or fashion shoes.

Tell the person fitting your foot what you intend to use the shoe for and at what intensity. This will help the shoe fitter advise you sensibly on the type of shoe you should be buying.

Also inform the shoe fitter of any previous injuries you might have had, as this could affect the type of shoe suitable to you.

Do not be influenced by brand names or cosmetic appearance alone, if you are serious about it, price should not be a factor - you only get one set of feet and you need to use them for a long time.

Buy sports shoes late in the afternoon, as all our feet tend to swell slightly throughout the day.

Always wear the same type of socks you intend to wear with the shoe as this allows for the extra thickness. The foot expels around one cup of sweat every day, so it is a good idea to wear sports socks that will absorb moisture. This will help prevent skin irritations on the feet.

Try to buy shoes that are made from leather or other natural fibers which breathe easily.

Bring an old sports shoe, as this will assist the sales person in establishing the type of shoe suitable to you needs.

Make yourself very aware of the points and general advise I have written here because sales staff that have the type of qualifications you need to get the perfect pair of shoes are very few and far between around here.

Las Vegas Open 2000

“Ooo Las Vegas. Ain’t no place For a poor boy like me”

This will be a Stableford event, with a lot of trophies and other special prizes. The cost is 1200 Baht and that includes green fee, caddy fee, and golf shirt.

Harry and Keith not handicapped by any system

TAGGS... golf from The Haven

Wednesday, July 12

Laem Chabang International Country Club,
Pairs Better Ball Medal

The Haven has adopted the CONGU (UK) guidelines of allowing 28 as the maximum handicap for men. It has also adopted the common standard of playing off three quarter handicap in a Pairs Better Ball. Those rule changes didn’t seem to faze Keith Fortt and Harry Riley. They teamed up at Laem Chabang to shoot a better ball score of seven under par against some strong competition and won the event by three strokes.

Keith had 40 points in the TAGGS Independence Day tournament the week before and never even made the podium. He reckons winning at Laem Chabang was a pretty nice consolation prize. Harry on the other hand, looking almost rotund, is just glad to be alive and playing any golf, much less winning golf.

There was a three-way tie for second place at 68 net.

Results:

1st Keith Fortt - Harry Riley 65
2nd Tom Gingerich - Jim Little 68
3rd Mark Gorda - Derek Reaper 68

Trevor ‘Thunder from Down Under’ Schirmer straightens out the ‘Knotted Putter’

TAGGS... golf from The Haven

Friday, July 14

Green Valley
Bogey

Australian Trevor Schirmer, playing off 26, went par, par, bogey, and par on the last four holes at Green Valley. There are plenty of scratch golfers who wouldn’t mind playing that well on these four holes. Participating in a Bogey competition on Friday, July 14, Trevor won those holes and broke away from “all square” to go “four up” and took the Knotted Putter in the TAGGS event.

Playing in a Better Ball competition two days before, Trevor was striking the ball extremely well and it was not surprising to see him go to the top of the leader board. Look for his name to win a few more events before returning back to Australia.

In second place, Doug Maiko edged out Mark Gorda in a count back with a score of 1 up. Doug, who plays off 23, never was more than one up or one down all day. Getting two strokes on Green Valley’s 17th hole, Doug made a bogey for a “plus” and the margin he need to take home a free green fee.

Results:

1st Trevor Schirmer 4 up
2nd Doug Maiko 1 up
3rd Mark Gorda 1 up

Diana Group expands further

Khun Sophin Tappajug, the Director of the Diana Group, celebrated the official opening of the new Diana Garden Lodge and Driving Range entertainment facility. 600 guests attending the occasion, including Pattaya City Mayor Pairat Suttithamrongsawat, Bang Lamung District Chief Vichien Chawalit, and Chonburi Family Court Chief Judge Padinya Sutrasuwan.

Khun Sophin Tappajug (2nd left) welcomes her honoured guests

Khun Sophin who is an associate judge in the family court of Chonburi and Chairperson of the Ban Raruen Reception Centre, for children and juveniles awaiting, sentencing, or bail, requested guests not to bring any gifts but to make donations towards the fund to help take care and improve the well-being of the children during a most trying period of their lives. All in all over fifty thousand Baht was collected and Khun Sophin matched the same amount to double it.

The new Diana Garden Lodge and Driving Range is located in Soi S.S. about 50 meters from the North Pattaya Road and is just one of many businesses within the Diana Group. Others in the group include the Diana Inn Hotel and Green Bottle Pub, the Diana Dragon, the Diana Millennium House, the Diana Estates Tower Condo, and the Pakawadee Travel Service Golf Centre.

Chonburi Family Court Chief Judge Padinya Sutrasuwan cutting the ribbon at the opening ceremony of the new Diana Golf Club and Driving Range.

Mrs. Sophin said the Group’s addition of the Driving Range and Garden Lodge was to complement the attractions offered to visiting tourists in Pattaya, especially those interested in golf.

The Diana Garden Lodge offers accommodation on a daily or monthly basis at reasonable prices with a private swimming pool in a quiet area with convenient parking. Their restaurant offers Thai and European cuisine prepared by professional chefs, including a variety of beverages and draft beers that are served in a relaxing atmosphere where visitors can forget their hectic routines and day-to-day worries. The only noise is the swinging of golf clubs driving away personal frustrations. The driving range P.G.A. golf pro, Richard Livingstone, boasts years of experience and can assist golfers interested in improving their swing for a nominal fee. It is claimed that this service provides Pattaya and the Group with the first Golf Instruction Institute in the eastern region.
