Windsurf Association of Thailand pinning gold medal hopes on Aran

Ariyawat Nuamsawat
The Windsurf Association of Thailand has announced the names of the three windsurfers who will be representing Thailand at the Asian Games, to be held in Qatar between 1 - 20 December. Familiar names amongst the windsurfing fraternity, Aran Homraruen and Phanuthat Ruamsap will be joined by female sailor Nopalai Dhansai to form a team that carries great medal hopes for the Kingdom.

Aran Homraruen, nearest camera, will be looking to strike gold for Thailand in the Asian Games later this year.

Aran, 34, was a gold medalist at the 13th Asian Games in Bangkok and a silver at the last Asian Games in Bhutan and will compete in the IMCO Lightweight 70 kg class. Phanuthat meanwhile will compete in the heavyweight division and Nopalai Dhansai will compete in the open category.
Talking about the chances of success for the team in Doha, Pattana Bunsawatt, General Secretary of the Windsurf Association of Thailand said that gold medal hopes lay with Aran, who is determined to do his country well in what is probably his final Asian Games appearance. Phanuthat and Nopalai each have a chance of winning at least a bronze medal. The government is offering incentives to medal winners of 1,000,000, 500,000 and 300,000 baht respectively for gold, silver and bronze. Pattana added that the weather would also be a major factor.
“The IMCO is an old vessel that Aran is an expert with and I have high hopes that he will finish his career with a gold. The assistant coach traveled to Doha in March to check out the conditions, but nobody knows what the conditions will be like in December. “The seas should not be too rough as the events are being held in the cove which is good news for the windsurfers.” Said Pattana.

The crossed fingers triumph

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, August 21, Bangpra, Stableford
1st Sunny Khanna, 43 pts
2nd Trevor Schirmer, 37 pts
3rd Randy Haupt, 36 pts, c/b 17
4th Conny Crawford, 36 pts, c/b 16
A rich vein of form has seen Sunny Khanna reduce his handicap by 3.4 strokes during the week and the win at Bangpra on Monday was only one of the rounds that made up the numbers, but it was the lowest net score of them all and proved good enough to take first prize by a clear six shots.

From left to right, Randy Haupt, Tony Barritt, Trevor Schirmer
Trevor Schirmer claimed the first of his two podium positions during the week, with a very good one under, with Randy Haupt still figuring in the prizes on count back from Sonny Crawford.
There were no “twos” in either division and the pools were therefore carried forward.
Before presenting the prizes Richard Livingston, the resident PGA teaching professional, welcomed new members Bill Hayes and Ben Budnitz and welcomed back Sunny Khanna and Peter Blok.
Wednesday, August 23, Phoenix Mountain & Ocean, Stable ford
1st Russell Exley, 39 pts
2nd Ron Bridge, 37 pts
3rd Takeshi Hakozaki, 36 pts, c/b 21
4th Chang Suh, 36 pts, c/b 18
Russell Exley led home a gaggle of Phoenix members, all with lower handicaps, and can be sure that he is heading their way in the future as his rounds get better and better following a course of lessons from Richard that has seen his handicap plummet in the last few weeks.
Ron Bridge made local knowledge count as he took second ahead of Takeshi Hakozaki and the returning Chang Suh, who were a shot back and needed to be separated by the countback over the Ocean course.
Once again there were no “twos” in the second division but the first division was shared between Chang Suh and Ron Bridge with one a piece.
Back at The Haven Richard welcomed back Ron Bridge, Chang Suh, Ian Grout, Tom Baigent and Tom Sathrum.
Friday, August 25, Eastern Star, Stableford
1st Tony Barritt, 38 pts c/b 18
2nd Randy Haupt, 38 pts c/b 17
3rd Trevor Schirmer, 36 pts
A last minute change of venue required when the original was found to be hosting a major tournament on the same day, meant another outing at Eastern Star where the management very kindly helped in rearranging the fixture at short notice.
After sliding in his first “two” earlier in the week with a very rare one putt, Tony Barritt went on to record a win with another outstanding putting round that consisted of only 34 puts, which local pundits and close observers attribute to his new grip and swing thought which have been the subject of a previous report in these pages.
Once again the cop turned robber was to be found lurking, or perhaps loitering would be a more appropriate term, and if it hadn’t been for a zero pointer on the sixteenth, would have racked another one in the win column.
Trevor Schirmer filled out the last place on the podium with a solid even par round to wrap up another reasonable week’s golf.
Again none of the second division contenders could manage a “two”, but the first division produced three: Tony Barritt and Barry Traynor had normal ones on par threes, but Mikael Andersson struck a wonderful tee shot on the twelfth, a par four, to within four feet of the flag and then stuck the put for a very unusual eagle. Unfortunately it was only good enough for a share of the booty.

Only Good Roger could cash with 27

IPGC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday, August 20, Green Valley - White Tees, Stableford
A Flight:
1st Klaus Schackt, 39 points
2nd Mike Shrosbree, 38 points
3rd John Emmerson, 38 points
B Flight:
1st Ray Dell, 41 points
2nd Dave Porter, 39 points
3rd Bob Lindborg, 39 points
C Flight:
1st Nat Meesuk, 41 points
2nd Emiel Van de Wiele, 38 points
3rd Charles Sheppard, 36 points
Near Pins: #2: Peter Barathy; #12: Fred Theobald; #16: Don Lehmer
2’s: Don Lemhmer, Darren Smith, Roy Thornton,
It was the Nat(ural) and “The Farmer in The” vying for PoM (Person of the Match). Nat’s 41 points were three clear, in C Flight, of Emile the Night Visitor and yet another couple in front of “Charlie”. Raymond was two clear of the tandem of The Valet’s Friend and the Guru of Green Valley. Alas, for the Guru, his acumen on the course did not transfer to the scorecard as David had the better of the count back.
The Volkscomputer was one clear of Her Majesty’s Solicitor and the GM. The GM, citing a possible conflict of interest, yielded the count back to Mike.
The administrative staff wishes to apologize to Simon Kendall for their failure to include his sponsored Near Pin in the day’s competition. They will try again next week, and as you will read, failed again.
Tuesday, August 22, Khao Kheow C & A - Yellow or White Tees, Stableford
Yellow A Flight:
1st Sonny Crawford, 35 points
2nd Norm Robinson, 33 points
3rd John Hillier, 32 points
Yellow B Flight:
1st Mick Folan, 34 points
2nd Bob Lindborg, 32 points
3rd Roger Koehler, 27 points
2’s: Gary Spencer, Jack Spencer, Tommy Murphy
The field showed great bravado stepping back to the Yellow Tees at Khao Kheow. However, once again bravado proved not enough to conquer Mr. Dye’s fine layout. But there are still winners and losers and the best round of the day was understandably found in A Flight in the person of Sonny Boy Crawford who had a modest 35 points, which was relatively awe-inspiring given his cohorts’ efforts. Sonny was followed in by Normshore and Nice Guy John Hillier with 33 points and 32 points, respectively. Mick Folan ruled B Flight with 34 points, with Bob Lindborg two back at 32. And our title boy of the week, Good Roger, amassed the lowest paying score in Society history but copping the B Flight bronze with 27 points!
Wednesday, August 23, Mountain Shadow - Blue Tees, Stableford
A Flight:
1st Steve Ellison, 32 points
2nd Sunny Khanna, 32 points
B Flight:
1st Harvey Samuel, 34 points
2nd Bruce McAdam, 33 points
2’s: Tom Balska, Bob Lindborg
Seemingly out of the frying pan and into the fire as if the Society hadn’t been thrashed enough they took off to the tree-lined fairways and undulating greens of Mountain Shadow. Harvey Samuel was MoM with a modest 34 points, one clear of his B Flight mate, Aussie Bruce McAdam. The Photographer to the Stars edged the other Sunny, this one with a “u”, in A Flight.
Friday, August 25, Phoenix M & O -White Tees, Stroke/Medal
A Flight:
1st Sunny Khanna, net 67
2nd John Emmerson, net 70
3rd Sonny Crawford, net 72
B Flight:
1st Frank Pilkington, net 71
2nd Bob Lindborg, net 72
3rd Joe Seabastian, net 72
Red Flight:
1st Mol Thongkiew, net 71
NP: #O7: Sonny Crawford
2’s: Marlene Prudden
The Scribe’s had his greatest dream fulfilled as Sunny with a “u” took A flight with a net 67 and Sonny with an “o” took third with a net 72. Illuminated between these two was none other than the GM who had a net 70. Sonny with an “o”’s bronze came at the count back expense of Jack Mosely and The Lady’s Man. Frankie the Pilk had a one-stroke edge in B Flight on the always-in-the-hunt, of late, Bob Lindborg, and Joe NR. Sebastian. While Bob had the better of the count back, Joe is to be commended now that he has turned in eight (8) scorecards in a row.
In a Society rarity, the GM was able to break the gals out into their own Red Flight. The fast improving Mol took her sisters by a couple of strokes. Acknowledgment should be given to the ravishing Ms. Marlene as she had the only 2 on the day and swept up a nice bundle.

Brian canes the field at The Navy

IPGC golf from The Caddy Shack

Friday, August 25, Sattahip, Medal
Friday saw the Caddy Shack golfers take a trip to the Navy course at Sattahip for a Medal round over the difficult North & South courses.
The day was perfect for golf but only Brian Jacks scored well, shooting level par, which included a gross 39 on the North course. Way back in second place was Mr. Loy with a net 85 and the rest of the field were even worse. There were 2 “twos” recorded by Mark Joshua and Brian Jacks.
Tuesday, September 5, The Caddy Shack will be hosting a 4-man scramble at Phoenix Golf Course. The starting time will be 11am with tee-off times listed on the Caddy Shack notice board the day before. Closing date for entries will be 5pm, September 4.
There will be the usual team winners and technical prizes and the entrance fee will be 250 baht per player with the green fee and caddy fee to be paid at the course. Golf carts should be booked individually.
After the golf there will be a live band and buffet at the Caddy Shack starting at 8pm. San Miguel will be offering a promotion during the evening. All golfers with their partners, wives or girlfriends are invited to attend the evening festivities.

Kenny smiling whilst Herb ponders what could have been

PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar

Tuesday, August 15, Dale Murphy again led the field. For the second week in a row Dale stood top of the heap with 37 points. It wasn’t a really good score but it was enough to win the day.
In close second was Sus Ige. Sus trailed by one shot, missing a few putts to manage 36 points. It was a close run but the missed putts cost Sus the bragging rights.
Last week, August 22, it was Kenny Mau’s turn at the top. With his handicap climbing, Kenny was feeling good as he whipped the field. His 41 points was good enough to win the day and all the side bets. Kenny was grinning from ear to ear as Herb screwed up the last hole to come home in second place.
Herb, who scored 40 points, really messed up the 18th by taking a nine with no score. With a great tee shot and looking at an easy par, he managed to top his next shot and duffed another five before making it to the green. Needless to say he had smoke coming out of his ears as he putted out.

The Beautiful Game?: Stadium of Fight?

Riz Taylor
Football really does have the habit of throwing up the most ridiculous, most unbelievable stories at times. Liverpool’s Champions League victory in 2005 was one, as was Greece winning the European Championship the year before that. But it’s not all about lifting trophies; the surprises come in all shapes and sizes. Seeing tiny Wigan Athletic threaten the Premiership’s big boys last season was an amazing story, one almost as unbelievable as the same side then deciding that Emile Heskey was the man to take them onto greater glories this time around.
For every winner there’s a loser, and last year Sunderland were that team. Unlike Wigan the Black Cats were unable to make an impact on the division during 2005/06. Previous tilts at Premiership glory had left the club up to its neck in debt, and despite manager Mick McCarthy’s famed abilities to get the best out of his players the club finished with a just fifteen points - a record Premiership low.
Returning to the second tier of English football was something the club and its fans were prepared for, but then came the unexpected news that former crowd favourite Niall Quinn was heading up a consortium to take over from outgoing chairman Bob Murray.
Many welcomed the Irishman’s arrival as the dawn of a new era, but the honeymoon period wasn’t to last long. First up came the rather important business of hiring a manager, but after being disappointed by the standard of applicants turning up at the Stadium of Light the big Irishman decided to take the bold step of appointing himself as temporary boss. Was this really happening?
Four straight league defeats were to come, and as the club looked down the barrel of League One the urgency of appointing a decent manager became all too pressing. When Quinn’s men crashed out of the League Cup to Bury, the side lying last of all professional English clubs at the foot of League Two, the drama had become a crisis. Under increasing pressure to appease the fans Quinn announced that a new manager was waiting in the wings, and a world class one at that.
“To me he is world class, I stand by that - we, Sunderland, are close to getting a leading figure in world football and we will support him 100 per cent,” he said last week.
On Tuesday it was confirmed that the new manager of Sunderland Football Club would be none other than Roy Keane. The former Manchester United captain had ended his playing career earlier in the summer after realising his body could no longer handle the rigours of the Scottish Premier League with Celtic, and had spent the summer taking his coaching badges.
Everyone expected Keane to return to the game as a boss - after all it was often said that Keane was Alex Ferguson’s manager on the pitch during United’s glory years - but not quite so quickly, and certainly not at Sunderland of all venues. The spat between Quinn and Keane during the preparations for the 2002 World Cup is the stuff of Irish football folklore. Keane tore into then manager Mick McCarthy shortly before the tournament and left the squad to return to Ireland. Quinn disapproved of Keane’s walking away, and at the time there was little love lost between the pair.
Sharing the same agent appears to have brought the two closer together, but for Quinn to appoint Keane as his new manager at Sunderland is this season’s surprise of all surprises.
As for Quinn’s claims that his manager would be “world class,” he was obviously bending the truth in that statement. There’s no doubting that Roy Keane was a world class player - his four FA Cups and seven Premiership titles are a testament to that - but a world class player doesn’t necessarily make a world class manager. For all his skills on the pitch his abilities off it are completely untested, but if anyone is to ready to give Quinn’s underperforming squad an almighty Diadora up the backside it’s Roy Keane.
Irish goalkeeper Dean Kiely is convinced that the players will appreciate Keane’s no-nonsense attitude. “Roy was very vocal in the dressing room and on the pitch, and he is a perfect leader. He commands respect and has an aura about him. Players will respond to passionate people. I always react better to a manager who is straightforward and honest with me, someone who would give you a pat on the back when you’d done well, but a kick up the backside when you needed it.”
What most worries Sunderland fans is whether Keane will be able to accept the fact that none of his new squad will ever approach his own levels of skill and professionalism. Time will tell if this is the man to drag this famous club up by its bootlaces, but there’s little doubt that there won’t be any hiding places for anyone unwilling to give absolutely everything to the cause.
“Most managers don’t really manage at all,” said Keane in his 2003 autobiography. “They pick the team, buy players, dictate tactics, placate the directors and court the media. Then they get the sack.”
Will Keane go the same way as “most managers” he described in his book, or will he reach the heights of his tutors Brian Clough or Alex Ferguson? One thing’s for sure - the man who’ll be rooting for his success this season more than anyone will be an old enemy in new chairman Niall Quinn. And who can blame him. After all, would you want to be the man given the job of sacking Roy Keane if this gamble goes wrong?
Quinn on Keane:
“How do you measure professionalism? By how much pasta you eat? Bleep tests? Abstinence? The ability to get on with it no matter what the circumstances? Walking out on your team before the greatest games of their lives?
“We all take responsibility for ourselves. Roy left us in Saipan, not the other way round. And he punished himself more than any of us by not coming back.”
Keane on Quinn:
“Niall Quinn going on TV and saying that he was shattered from it [the 2002 World Cup preparations], saying he hadn’t slept. Did he think it was a walk in the park for me coming back to Ireland, what my family and kids had to go through?
“He’s sitting on TV pretending to wipe a tear from his eye. He deserves an Oscar that fella, making out to be Mother Teresa. People don’t know half of it.”

Joel on top at Phoenix

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday, August 22, Phoenix, Stableford
Life goes on at Tropical Bert’s as usual and nothing much changes. Some old friends we keep seeing and some drop off the edge of the world. But Bert’s famous free breakfast and evening meal continues, and the hungry like to test it all.

Tuesday winner Joel Flor with Sunnee Jeffreys.

On this day we only had a skip and a jump and we were at Phoenix, so a slow start to the day was experienced, then a bimble down to this fine course. The test on this occasion was to be The Mountain and Ocean Nines, most people’s favourites because even if one does not play well, the views are superb.
Phoenix always seems to be in fine condition, and as time goes by and the course matures, it becomes more difficult to score well on. Even those who used to class this as an easy course are now having to change their minds. It is moderately difficult, and with the wind we experienced on this particular day, great scores were not expected. Still quite a few did beat their handicap
After a quick change, the rich went into the restaurant to hand their cards in, while the rest stopped at a more economical watering hole on the way back.
Back at Bert’s as the players filtered in, Tim was busy sorting out the winners, and was quite mortified to find, after shooting his best round for months, he had lost third place on a count back. And so to the results and the winner of the day was Joel Flor, with Andy Evans in second and Daryl Evans in third. Still, Tim raised a grimace and got on with the presentation.

Near Pin: Neal McAllister, Scott Turner, Anders Pederson, Perry McNeely, Bill Knight (2), Joel Flor, Jake Turner
Long Put: Jake Turner, Andy Evans

Dave strikes it Rich at Treasure Hill

PSC golf from The Oohsa Bar

Tuesday, August 22 saw a small field of thirteen travel to Treasure Hill for our weekly Stableford competition. As usual when we visit this testing layout, we play the white tees and to play to your handicap will generally see you finish in the place-getters. This week was no exception, with Rich Murphy (21) leading the way home with 35 points, followed by Jeff Wylie (7) with 33, while Dave Arrowsmith (7) completed the podium with 30 points.
As the headline alludes to, the technical prizes provided a fine booty for Dave, who picked up 2 NTPs and the long putt, while host at the Oohsa Bar, Malcolm Smith secured the other NTP.
Malcolm and his staff provided the cold drinks & fine food upon our return, much appreciated by all the golfers. For a friendly game, with complimentary brekky & food before the presentation, you are always welcome at the Oohsa Bar on Soi Khao Talo, hope to see you there.

The Bill ‘n Gordon show at Sriracha

PSC golf from the Bowling Green

Saturday, August 19, Sri Racha G.C.
Bill and Gordon had a good day on the course between them, Bill Plath winning the A division with 39 pts and Gordon Everingham taking B Flight with an unreal 44 pts. (His best game since coming to Pattaya). Sriracha was in good shape and the greens were running true. The weather made it a fine day of golf for all.
Flight A
1st Bill Plath (12) 39 pts
2nd Fergus Brennon (11) 38 pts
3rd Mike Withers (16) 37pts, c/back from Jack Moseley)
Flight B
1st Gordon Everingham (27) 44 pts
2nd David Swaine) (36) 40 pts, c/back)
3rd Ian Kidd (31) 40 pts

2’s: Jack Mosely. Well done Jack, some compensation for losing 3rd place on count back
Tuesday, August 22, The Emerald, Stableford
The Emerald played well and was in good condition. The course seemed to beat us up pretty well though as no one broke par. Phil Dwyer led the way to victory with a respectable 34 pts. It was great to see a new face on the leader board this week with Les Burns getting a good 31 pts off a 36 hdcp. Well-done Les
Results:
1st Phil Dwyer (18) 34 pts
2nd Ged Mason (10) 32 pts
3rd Les Burns (36) 31 pts
Thursday, August 24, Eastern Star, Stableford
Eastern Star was in great shape, we all enjoyed golfing the course in this condition. Today some good scores were made and Fergus came within 1 inch of making a Hole in One. Some of us could almost taste the drinks he would have had to buy. Needless to say he did win a closest to pin on that hole and the 2s contest.
Results:
1st Fergus Brennan (11) 40 pts
2nd Tewin Lamthong (31) 35 pts, c/back from David Swaine
3rd David Swaine (35) 35 pts
4th Vincent Smyth (10) 34 pts
2’s: only one golfer made a “two” and guess who? Fergus Brennan with that almost Hole in One
We all enjoyed a great day and back at the Bowling Green, Tony and staff served up a great dinner and we all relaxed and enjoyed it and a few brews. I personally think the staff there are the Best.
If any one is interested in golfing with the Bowling Green we play every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We meet at Bowling Green at 7.45am for breakfast and transportation, and new players are always made to feel welcome.

Morris and Foster sparkle at The Emerald

Jomtien Golf with the I.P.G.C.

Monday, August 21, Emerald, Stableford
Our first visit in some months to The Emerald, owing to the poor condition in recent times, there were a few comments afterwards about the gradual improvement to the course. There were 23 starters today and the two divisions were split at 18 and under.
All the par threes on this course are rated difficult by our members and it was not surprising nobody from Division 2 won nearest the pin on the 7th. Masashi and Paddy Wilson won the white wine and the whisky in Div 1 on the 5th and 13th and Miss Noy chose the red wine for her effort on the 15th. There were no “twos” recorded today, so the prizes move on to Treasure Hills next Monday.
Ted Morris and Ricky Smith both came in with 36 points in Div 1, and both had 17 points on the back nine, but Ted took first prize on the count back with a 12 to 11 score on the back six. Mr. Masashi’s 33pts,earned him 3rd place.
‘Brummie Boy’ Ken Foster shot 38 points to win the Div 2 battle, closely followed by Miss Noy on 36 and Mss Am on 34 points. Les Hall’s 22 pts earned him yet another ladies tipple, I think he has gone off the beer now. The Rich Man Poor Man’s free freshly baked pizza meal draw was won by Ben Findon.
Wednesday, August 23, Eastern Star, Rainbow Stableford
A different format today for a fun game where the men had to chose six tees from the blue, red and white to play from, and the ladies, red, yellow and white. Before we left Paweenas Bar that morning there were hush, hush conversations regarding the different choices of tees people were playing.
Bev Ewens turned up on the first tee with an A4 printed sheet of facts and figures relating to the course statistics. The cut was made at 19 and below and in the second division, Miss Am with her ever-decreasing handicap, (now at 27), won with 38pts. Bev Ewens came second with 36pts and Ken Foster was third with 34.
Division 1’s Joop Medze with 34 points came in third in the premier flight, followed by the ever improving Andy Mills with 35, but Ken Lill’s 37 took the honours.
There were no nearest the pins or “twos” today. There was no respectable winner of the ladies tipple either at presentation, but after an hour in the bar Jeff Cargill asked, “Did anyone pick my clubs up?” There was silence - they were still at Eastern Star. I am sure Gal his missus wanted a freebie. Eddie Behrs free pizza meal was won by Paddy Wilson.
The Jomtien Golf Society meets every Monday and Wednesday at Paweenas, Soi 5, Jomtien Beach Road and departs at 9.00am for a 10.30 tee off time. Transport and club hire are available. Please sign up in the bar or ring Glyn on 06 837 5464.

No parade but its still Macey’s day at The Bunker

PSC golf from The Bunker

Monday, August 21, Green Valley, Medal
Monday, and with the ‘Golfer of the Month’ trophy up for grabs, The Bunker Boy’s played a Stableford competition at Green Valley.

William Macey double winner at Pattaya and Pattana

Mashi Kaneta put himself firmly in the driving seat by winning the A Flight with 35 points ahead of Peter Habgood and Ken Lill, who tied on 32 points in second place. In the B Flight it was close with a clutch of players finishing with 29 points; Ray Bloom, Noel O’Brien and Paul Davies all trailed Clive Hanning who won with just one point more to take first place on 30 points.
Three near pin prizes went to Mashi Kaneta, Geoff Parker and Clarke Alexander.
Wednesday, August 23, Pattana Sports Club, Medal
Our mid-week outing saw the Bunker Boys take a trip to Pattana Sports Club for a change, and this tough course proved to be just that as none of the players broke par.
In the B Flight Geoff Hart won with a net 77, followed by runner up Granville Swanton with net 80. In the A Flight John King came runner up with net 77 behind eventual winner William Macey, who shot a net 75.
Near pin prizes went to Geoff Hart, Mike Withers and two to Clive Hanning.
Friday, August 25, Pattaya Country Club, Stableford
The second Stableford competition of the week at Pattaya Country Club on Friday saw William Macey win again in the A Flight with 41 points, ahead of Geoff Parker, Ray Bloom and Mashi Kaneta, who all scored 37 points. Mashi picking up points puts him ahead in the ‘Golfer of the Month’ competition.
In the B Flight Jim Wooler and Paul Davies shared the honours to win with 37 points ahead of George Redgewell, who finished with 36 points. Near pin prizes were shared between Alan Campbell, John McDonald, Mike Withers and PJ Redmond.

Nile Sheehan on form at Pattaya C.C.

PSC golf from The Peacock Place

Monday, August 21, Pattaya C.C., Stableford
Another Monday, and after a hearty breakfast we all headed for the Pattaya Country Club for a Stableford round. The day was fine and very hot but we did have a little trouble with the greens, as some of them were being tined as we played. However, the scores weren’t too bad considering.
The ladies’ winner on the day was Toy Theobald with 34 points, and runner up was Su Muangmatcha - I wont reveal the score but suffice to say this lady also got the free drink. Men’s Division A was won by Nile Sheehan with a great score of 40 points and the runner up was Terry Phur with 37, great scoring chaps. The men’s Division B was won by Graham Hiskett on a count back from Harvey Samuel, both on 37 points. The “twos” pot was shared between Jack, (the “twos” specialist), Mosely and Mike Withers.
Thursday, August 24, Noble Place, Stableford
Thursday we took off for Noble Place for a ‘Better Ball’ Stableford event. I made the mistake of playing Noble Place last time as a Medal round and paid the price for a very slow day of golf. However, this day turned out great and we played A & B for a change.
The day was won by Wayne Farrell and Wendy Khan with a fine 42 points. There were 3 groups tied on 40 points and the lucky duo of Terry Phur and Alan Pearce were the winners on a count back. We all adjourned back to the Peacock for a sumptuous buffet put on by Mine Host Dao and her lovely staff. All the golfers would like to wish Dao a very Happy Birthday for Saturday night.
If you are looking for a game with us you are very welcome just call into the Peacock Place on Soi Siam Country Road and put your name on the sheet or give Bob a call on 07 941 2474. We meet for breakfast at around 8am.

Ebrahim makes it a double at the Cafe

PSC golf from The Café Kronborg

Monday, August 21, Royal Lakeside, Stroke
The beautiful Royal Lakeside was host for a Stroke-play competition in one flight. The course on the day was in it’s usual excellent condition, and we had nice breezes all day.
The ever present Ebrahim took first with a net 67, ahead of Kevin Dinan in second with a net 68 and Marty Allred in third with a net 71 on count back from Alan Ewing in fourth.
Thursday, August 24, Noble Place, Stableford
This is always a favourite day out with any golfing group and on this day Cafe Kronborg was no exception, with many golfers turning up at the last minute.

Ebrahim was a double winner for the week.
When one considers the distance of the course from Pattaya, it has to be something special to cause such a reaction, and essentially it is three nines of really challenging golf holes, at a great price. Mind, on this day the B Nine was not in the best of condition, the ground staff having introduced chemicals to burn off some of the bad grass and weeds. The A Nine was in much better nick.
So early into the Cafe Kronborg, and up the long road to Noble place, then a quick book-in and all mill about whilst Tim organises the start.
On the course it was pretty windy, but generally the weather, was super. Even so, some still found it difficult overall and not many great score were expected.
The restaurant proved a fine place to do the presentation, and in the A Flight, 0 to 16, the winner, Kevin Callaghan, had by far the best score of the day with 41 points. In second was Bill Plath with 36 points and in third was Roger Strine with 34 points.
The players in the B Flight did not fare so well, but a win is a win. The victor with 34 points was Ebrahim (again), ahead of a count back on 33 points won by Wayne Koch in second and a very surprised Dave Richardson in third.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

‘Tiz the first Sunday of the month, which translates to lots of fights around the world and up your block. One fight that won’t take place is German-based IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham against mandatory challenger Edison Mirand at the EWE-Arena in Oldenburg, Germany. The reason? Bad flu. Don’t ever recollect a “good flu” but that’s just me. Jeeves lately has been struck by the “bottle flu” and blames it on something he ate.
“Naturally, this not a nice situation for me,” said IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham. “I had felt since Friday that there was an infection in me, but I thought it wouldn’t get so bad. This morning, however, it became clear that I won’t be able to fight on Saturday.”
That cancellation doesn’t exactly leave the cupboard bare as there’s still a couple of really good fights on Sunday, one in “Merry Ole’ England” and then finally James Toney-Samuel Peter in Los Angeles USA.
At the home of the Bolton Wanderers, (who at press time have 4 points after winning at home 2-0 over the Spurs and drawing on the road at Fulham), Clinton Woods (39-3-1) and Glenn Johnson (44-10-2) meet for the third time. If this writer had any ability he would have written, “They meet in the third leg of a light heavyweight trilogy.” Some things just aren’t meant to be.
This great indoor facility is next door to the Reebok Stadium which will be empty with the Wanderers having the week off, before entertaining Watford. The two boxers met first in 2003, battling to a “very disputed” draw. “Very disputed” in this case translates to “lousy”, with the local judge having it for Woods (116-112), one for Johnson (115-113) and a third official scoring it 114-all. The second time around Johnson won easily 116-112, 115-113 twice. Take Johnson.
The WBC has decreed that the winner of James “Lights Out” Toney (69-4-2) and Samuel “The Real” Peter (26-1) will fight the newly crowned WBC champ, Oleg Maskaev next. That should add a little more spice to this match that already holds the appeal of a dance palace when the U.S. Fleet’s in town.
Many remember Burt Sugar as the former editor of Ring Magazine, and if not for that then for his great sports coat in the Howie Reed mode. “I think that James Toney is the best American heavyweight around and he’s not a heavyweight. He has the best skills.” When Mr, Sugar was making that remark he hadn’t seen Evander Holyfield destroy Jeremy “Master” Bates in 2 rounds last Saturday night in Dallas ,Texas. Holyfield has more skills than Toney ever imagined.
“My Lord I don’t like that Mr. Toney. He seems like such a crude person lacking even the basic social skills. I would like to see Mr. Peter take him to the woodshed and give him a good hiding.”
Jeeves has got it right about Toney but it’s doubtful that Peter has the skills necessary to deliver. Beating Toney when he’s on his game is like trying to corner a “second phase male” after your wallets just been lifted while strolling down the beach after midnight. Toney’s Achilles heel is stamina, which along with movement also plagues Peter. Love to see Peter win as a match between he and Maskaev would be dynamite.
Little “chin wags” are still going on about Maskaev-Rahman. Good guy referee Jay Nady has come under attack for his “stop holding command” when in fact there was darn little. The Lord of the Square Ring opined that maybe Nady was told by ‘someone’ to stop the holding at all cost.
I must have hit a nerve as I got the following e-mail from the WBC’s Senior, Mauricio Sulaiman: “With all due respect, we think that Jay Nady’s performance in the Rahman vs. Maskaev fight was sensational and prevented a fight full of holding, that only makes heavyweight fights boring and dull. He guided them to perform in one of the best heavyweight fights in a long time.”
All that may be true, (here comes the “butt monkey”), except that a referee’s duty is not to “guide a fight” or make it better. A referee’s job is to enforce the rules. Period. End.
Maybe if all organizations would stop “real holding” then boxing would regain some of the luster that’s been lost over the years.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission had a chance to do something meaningful in boxing by tossing the book at Jose Luis Castillo. Instead they tossed a page. Castillo as you may remember failed to make weight for his title fight in June against Diego Corrales. The Commission fined Castillo US$250,000 and suspended his license until January 1, 2007. BFD.
Very seldom do I agree with Corrales promoter Gary “Gas Bag” Shaw but this is one of those times: “Have these people ever heard of victim’s rights?” Shaw said. “This is an outrage.” He’s right, the fine and suspension was ridiculously low considering that Castillo took the money for the fight with no intention of making the weight. Why did this happen? Some will cynically point out that this sets up a mega fight with Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas next year where everyone will make piles of money.
Both outgoing Commission chairman Skip Avansino and chairman-elect Tony Alamo said they were moved by Castillo’s sincerity: “I know it’s difficult to understand without having been in the room and seeing his passion and emotion,” Avansino said. What a load of crap.
Jeeves how about the local boxing news?
“Right My Lord: WBC #1 straw, Oleydong Sithsamerchai, (22-0) kept his WBC youth straw-weight title at the 4th Wing of Royal Thai Airforce in Nakorn Sawan, Thailand on Wednesday. Filipino Ryan Bito (8-2-1) trailed throughout, losing 100-89, 100-91, 98-91. This is the Thai’s 16th defence and sets up a fight next year against Japan-based Thai, Eagle Kyowa.
“Muangfahlek Kiatvichean, (13-7, 8) won in 10 over Klachana Jockygym, (1-8) to capture the Thai super-feather title at Rachadamnern Stadium in Bangkok. Kiatvichean has fought Jockygym 3 times and is 2-1.
“Pornsawan Por Pramook, (16-0, 12 KO’s) won easily over WBE champ, Jun Arlos (33-19-4). My Lord, what is a WBE champ? I’ve never heard of one.”
Me neither.
“My Lord, you’ve received an-mail from Mr. Brook at the Island Lager Bar in Katone Beach. Would you like me to read it? It begins, ‘Glad to see Jeeves has the common sense to order Phuket Island Lager Beer - must be a good guy to tend his Master so well. Just wanted to let you know that Phuket Lager Beer has been awarded the Gold Medal at the 45th World Beer Selection 2006 by Monde Selection (The International Institute for Quality Selections) held in Prague. Quite a mouthful, but so is the beer ... will have a few to celebrate this evening. Mr. D. Brook.’ That Mr. Brook must be a fine gentleman.”
“My Lord did you read that Ricky Hatton got mugged in China? I was reading the Daily Mirror and it said, ‘The Hitman’, who was walking alone in Shanghai after becoming separated from his friends, was accosted by a gang of thugs who, after a scuffle, made off with Hatton’s £4,000 Rolex watch.’”
What is this world coming to Jeeves? An email from Mr. Brook, Ricky Hatton mugged in Shanghai and you losing your umbrella on Beach Road walking home from the TQ. It’s a dangerous world Jeeves. Perhaps you could provide me with a few Island Lagers before you venture out with your new friends to party the night away.

Spectacular success for scrambling Scandies

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the OK Corral

The winning scramble team of (from 2nd left) Arthur Hancock, Alex Backlund, Thomas Johansson and Mikael Andersson, with Mr. Len and Mr. Denis

After three months of planning, the big day had arrived. Tuesday, August 22, the Pattaya Golf Society at the OK Corral marked the birthday of “golf geezer”, Mr. Len, in fine style with a 4-person team scramble at the exquisite Green Valley course, near Ban Chang. The turnout almost matched the number of years that Mr. Len has under his belt and the quality of the golf was of a high standard indeed. The fun element was still there of course and none more so than the discovery at check-in that Ricky Smith had forgotten his golf shoes and had to hire a pair! The club shop offered him only one!
The round progressed incredibly quickly for a scramble and on their return to the clubhouse four and a half hours later the challenges, the agonies, the frustrations and the fun of the day were etched on the faces of the returning “troops”.

For Ricky the day was to end as it had begun when his team pinned their hopes on his final drive at the last, only to see it nosedive out of bounds, costing them two shots and an eventual third place. The team of John Cunningham, Bill Hewitt, Sam Fitsimmons and Basil Foley took the honours instead with a hard earned score of 61.3, but a country mile behind the pre-tournament favourites of Sunny Khanna, Peter Blok, Emiel van der Wiele and Ian Wilson whose second placed score of 58.8 was a convincing and adept performance for a team put together at the last moment.
The round of the day was a spectacular effort by Arthur Hancock and the Scandinavian trio of Mikael Andersson, Thomas Johansson and Alex Backlund and their run of nine birdies and an eagle from hole 4 to hole 14 killed off the hopes of others in the field. Their gargantuan effort had given them an unassailable total of 57.4 to win the event in style.
On the day of course there were no losers and the presentation party back at the OK Corral was the happiest day in Mr. Len’s Pattaya life. The friends who had sponsored holes on the day, Dale Shier, Harry Riley, Carl Lovatt and Chris, Tony Kitchen, Ray Underwood and Mr. Denis and the generosity of Andy Mills and Kris Kritsnajootha all contributed generously to the celebration and the entire proceeds of the day went to the Pattaya Orphanage.
Khun Malee and the girls from the OK Corral played their part wonderfully with a sumptuous buffet and the registry team of Mary Jones and Avis Hewitt did their usual friendly and efficient job at check-in and recording. The day had been a thundering success, five dozen smiling faces showed that at the party. Mr. Len will never forget this particular birthday!
Near-Pins: # 2 Saranya Chaiyanont, # 9 Andy Mills, # 12 Mikael Andersson, # 16 Paul Quodomine
Long Drive: Div 1 (0 - 11) Mikael Andersson, Div 2 (12 - 19) Bill Hewitt, Div 3 (20 - 28) Danny Larsen
Sunny times at Bangpra
It was back to normal for the Pattaya Golf Society on Thursday, August 24, after the hectic start to the week, and the peaceful course at Bangpra was the choice of venue for the Society’s weekly Stableford event. It was also the Stableford Order of Merit event for the month.
The golfers were out in force, as was the sun and, of course, the monkeys, this time even more in evidence! The only cloud on the horizon was the imminent return to Japan of one of the PGS’s most loyal members, Masashi Iizumi, and his ever-present smile will be missed around the OK Corral for the next two months.
The two playing flights were cut at fifteen and under and for three players high scores were on the menu for the day. In the second flight Tony Kitchen showed his true merits as he posted a score of 34 points for third place and it is good to see the personable golfer return to some semblance of his old form after a couple of substandard shows. Well ahead in the frame for the group winner were “newbie” Ian Wilson and old hand Len Jones and their scores of 40 points apiece took the flight in style. For Len Jones it was a splendid end to the week’s activities.
In the top flight Kris Kritsnajootha’s hard won 34 points took third place, one behind “Mr. Consistency”, John Cunningham’s 35 but a long way behind the day’s best score of 41 points posted on his return (as always!), by Sunny Khanna. How do you do it Sunny? Texan Bob Martin had very generously sponsored two near-pin prizes and these were won by Stuart Thompson and David Thomas on holes 8 and 12, whilst the “twos” competition pot proper was shared by Tom Baigent, John Cunningham and Stuart Thompson. Peter Blok claimed he had mislaid his card after the round but eagle eyes spotted his score elsewhere and his paltry 26 points more than merited the Booby Bevy. It had been another sunny day with the PGS, in all senses of the word.
