Chonburi Province celebrated the birthday of HM Queen
Sirikit by again saving buffalos from the slaughterhouse and donating
them to the poor.
This year 16 buffalos were donated to the province,
along with 281,600 baht for charity projects. The animals were awarded
to poor farmers in the Mapong and Khokhinom districts of Phanthong
Province. The cash will be used by Chonburi’s Livestock Office to
continue the program.
Since 2009 Chonburi has spared the lives of 335 heads
of cattle.
Gov. Wichit Chatpaisit said the annual buffalo rescue
serves as a merit-making exercise in that it both saves the lives of
cattle and honors HM the Queen. It’s also a program that benefits the
poor and increases the population of Thai buffalos, he said.
Livestock Office officials urged the poor farmers to care well for
the animals, as they are a royal gift. Should they encounter any
problems, they said, the office is there to assist them.
