Pimpimon takes out indoor bowls tourney

Tournament winner Pimpimon, front center, and the losing finalists pose for a group photo at the conclusion of the event.

Twelve of the finest Thai Ladies Lawn Bowlers competed on Sunday 29th April in the inaugural Ladies Singles Indoor Lawn Bowls Tournament at the recently opened Coco Club Resort, with the support of former Sports Minister Sontaya Kunplome and the Chonburi Sports Association.

The Coco Club Resort, which is situated in a relaxed country area in Baan Amphur - Huay Yai, approximately 20km south of Pattaya, is the only indoor lawn bowls facility in Thailand and is Thai family run.

Sunday’s players included the 2011 and 2012 Ladies Outdoor Bowls Champions with a few newcomers and after the round robin leagues it came down to the semi finals where Pimpimon just outplayed Thong (2012) with a score of 8–7 and then Thanom showed her experience to overcome Coco’s own Sue 10-3.

The final battle went under way with Pimpimon just edging Thanom 9-5 on the last end of a 9 end final to win her first trophy and the 10,000 Baht first prize.

Coco Club Resort has 2 bars, a restaurant for snacks or fine dining dinner with chef and keen bowler Sue presenting her unique style of food at affordable prices. The resort comprises of a private suite and meeting room, 8 chalets, swimming pool and four “indoor” bowls rinks where a mixed doubles league is played on Tuesdays, an invitation league on Wednesday, a triples league on Friday and also a monthly competition.

New players are always welcome and four staff players are available at certain times to make up numbers. Go to www.cococlub.biz for more info.

Phil Groves doubles in a short week

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, April 30, Green Valley – Stableford

CSS 72

1st Phil Groves (8) 39pts

2nd Mike Hill (24) 38pts

3rd Brian Randall (36) 36pts

4th Joe Niisato (13) 34pts

5th Serge Straeten (17) 33pts

With a few players having gone missing there were only enough left for one division when they assembled at the usually very popular Green Valley. Possibly the lack of attendees was due the fact that it is now one of the most expensive courses to play on the circuit, with most of the other courses accepting that in the low season even a few golfers is better than none. The management here seems to think differently.

Phil Groves.

Having said that the course is in very good condition, as the scores returned on the day reflect, with the greens being fast and flat which no doubt assisted Phil Groves, who revels in such conditions to return his best score since the back end of February. Even so, it was only just good enough as Mike Hill followed up a nice front nine of 19 points with a repeat performance that just failed to match Phil’s twenty points on the inward half and settled for a very good second place.

Brian Randall took another podium placing with a solid level handicap round ahead of Joe Niisato in fourth, who in turn just edged out Serge Straeten by a single point, having dropped a few over the closing holes and recorded three blobs during the last five.

There were no 2’s in either division.

Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed back Tony O’Neill and Terry Hodgkiss.

Friday, May 4, Rayong Country Club - Stableford

CSS 72

1st Phil Groves (8) 34pts

2nd Alwyne Burley (18) 34pts

3rd Brian Randall (36) 33pts

4th Mike Hill (24) 31pts

5th Shuichi Kodaka (18) 30pts

Once again Phil Groves was to be found at the top of the leader board but this time had to rely on a better count back, which he won by a margin of 19 to 17 as Alwyne Burley cracked on the last two holes. Alwyne managed just a single point on each when he looked a certain winner ahead of playing partner Phil, who took five points over the same two holes to level the scores and set up the winning count back for his second win of the week.

Alwyne Burley.

Brian Randall was also a second time podium winner in the week as he took his second 3rd place with another solid round but his challenge also ended on the last two holes as he could muster just one point over what could be the two toughest fishing holes in the area.

Mike Hill also featured again in the list of winners although this time down in fourth place having slumped badly on the inward half following an outstanding outward nine that produced 21 points with just one single pointer in the nine.

Shuichi Kodaka made it into the last honourable mention slot as he played his last round before a quick trip back to Japan to get some R and R in away from the hectic night life of Pattaya.

One again there were no 2’s in either division.

Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for Don Everett and Seppo Sadeharju and farewells for Brian Randall and Shuichi Kodaka.

Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Phin Stewart wins 1st Annual Hoser Memorial Golf Tournament

The 1st annual Hoser Memorial Golf Tournament was held on May 3rd at the Plutaluang Navy Golf Course. The round was played under the Stableford scoring system using a unique handicap system. All players started off with a 0 handicap and they then received 1 stroke for each “beverage” consumed on the course.

Benny the Nerd

The overall winner was Phin Stewart scoring 26 points on a 0 “beverage” handicap. Second place was won by “Scandi” Patrick scoring 23 points on an amazing 14 “beverage” handicap.

Ray Lepard and Matt Millar had the best near pins with Ray having his on 8 West and Matt on 12 North. Dale Drader won the honors for the shortest drives for the day – having made a number of them throughout his round.

The awards and buffet was held at The Haven with each golfer being treated to the world famous Hoser Shake as they entered. As the night wore on, the stories and antics of past Hoser Goofy Golf Tournaments held annually in Khon Kaen were remembered.

Thanks to all the golfers and supporters, the Plutaluang Navy Golf Course and The Haven for making this tournament possible.

Additional thanks to John G for the Canadian giveaways, Tahitian Queen for the second place winner’s prize, Matt, Malcolm, Wayne and Art Field for the trophy and Stephen Beard and The Haven for providing a home for the Hoser Memorial Golf Tournament trophy.

Phin Stewart holds up the Hoser trophy flanked by Patrick and Matt.

Ray Lepard holes out his ‘near pin’ on 8 West.

Matt Millar marks the spot for his near pin on 12 North.

Pattaya golfers scramble to raise cash for kid’s home

Ten groups of golfers took part in the Irish Wolfhound Charity 4-man scramble held at Eastern Star Golf Club on April 23.

Two local business men generously sponsored the tournament to the tune of 20,000 baht (10,000 each), with half going towards prizes and the remainder being set aside for the charity fundraiser. After donations from players following the event a total of 34,000 baht was raised for the Baan Jing Jai Children’s Home and the organizers would like to say a big thanks to all who contributed and took part on the day.

The winning team was the quartet of M. Anderson, C. Voller, B. Bartram and A. Pilkington who returned a fine score of 59.5 to finish just half a shot up on the runner-up foursome of D. Blair, Toi Blair, A. Hancock and Ian Walsh on net 60, while the third team of J. Lay, R. Exley and M. Rock scored 60.5.

There were various technical prizes on offer including a prize of 30,000 baht for a hole in one and Oam Wilson was just a few inches from claiming the jackpot.

After the presentation, a free buffet was provided for all participants and thanks given to all who helped out, especially Cully Monks and Paddy Wilson. The organizers hope to run more of these competitions in the future and info can be obtained from the Irish Wolfhound bar at the top of Soi 4, Pratumnak Hill.

Mike rolls back the years

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

From left: Sunday’s winners Mike Craighead and Bob Newell with Colin the Golf Manager.

Sunday, April 22, St Andrews - Stableford

A Flight

1st Bob Newell (7) 38pts

2nd Jim Brackett (6) 37pts

3rd Thierry Petrement (12) 37pts

B Flight

1st Mike Craighead (21) 40pts

2nd Gavin Perfect (15) 40pts

3rd Jez Lees (15) 38pts

Near Pins: No 4 John Deardon; No 9 Jon Haguen; No 12 Ian Ripley; No 17 Yui Bietry.

I have said it before that every golf bar in Pattaya is filled with stories of hard luck and “what ifs”. That is much a part of the game as playing. But I dare say in terms of hard luck it would be tough not to offer some consolation to Terry Mangan who signed his A Flight winning card incorrectly. To Terry’s credit it was he who brought this error to the attention of Colin who was left with little option but to red card Terry.

This unfortunate oversight gave the A Flight honors to ‘Broad more’ Bob who shot a very good 38 points. Bob was one stroke clear of Jim Brackett (silver) and Thierry Petrement (bronze), who both ignored “the ladies before gents” protocol as Jan Erikssen and Yui Bietry were left satang less on the same score.

B Flight it seemed had more 40’s than you would find in an augmentation clinic, and, of course, it is the scribe’s job to keep you abreast of such observations.

There are not many plaudits left to bestow on Mike ‘the mechanic’ as he shot a very creditable 40 points. It should be noted that Gavin Perfect matched the point output but fell to a back nine count back. The Principal scraped the bronze three shots adrift.

Most Brits of a certain age remember the old florin coin, sometimes referred to as two bob, now known as twenty new pence. There were two 2’s carded today both chipped in by Bob Newell and Bob Patterson, with inflation and the strong baht it worked out at 1.200 nice ones apiece.

Monday, April 30, Bangpakong Riverside - Stableford

1st Paul Hack (15) 43pts

2nd Jim Bell (18) 38pts

Well there it is! A score that would normally raise the hackles of a skeptical Pattaya golf community but which in this case received a congratulatory round of applause and hoots of “great round.” Paul blistered the Bangpakong layout with 43 points off his old 15 handicap. Paul was five strokes clear of Jim ‘I nearly did’ Bell.

Amazingly half the field carded a ‘2’ and just about received their investment back

Wednesday, May 2, Royal Lakeside - Stableford

A Flight

1st Thierry Petrement (12) 39pts

2nd Jon Haugen (7) 33pts

B Flight

1st Jim Elphick (24) 35pts

2nd Emil Galzen (17) 34pts

It turned out the story of the day was Thierry Petrement and his 39 points as he was the only competitor to play under his handicap. Thierry was four strokes clear of the field and six clear in the senior flight from Jon Haugen and Garry Green, Jon managing to edge Garry off the podium steps.

Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick was top man in B Flight with 35 points. Emil Galzen took the silver on count back as Jim ‘I did ring the’ Bell lost the resulting count back.

Amazingly there were no 2’s recorded so it is a rollover on Friday.

Friday, May 4, Crystal Bay B&C - Stableford

A Flight

1st Gary Green (10) 34pts

2nd Ed Wyckoff (9) 34pts

B Flight

1st Paddy Jordan (18) 38pts

2nd Lou Szigligeti (18) 35pts

With a group of luminaries knotted atop the senior flight at 34 points, the old count back was dragged out and the log jam was quickly sorted. Garry Green edged Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff for the flight honors, and the latter sent Steve Newman and Nigel Jones to the presentation crowd.

B Flight’s Paddy Jordan was the man of the match as he was the only player to solve the Crystal Bay riddle with a fine 38 points. Paddy’s fine effort was three clear of the ‘Soi 13 traffic Warden’ Lou Spaghetti

A Flight’s Nigel Jones made up for his count back disappointment as he split the 2’s pot with Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan.

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Toddy wins inaugural Anzac Day Trophy

PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Peter Blackburn

Wednesday, April 25, Rayong Country Club – Stableford

Whilst having a few beers at The Growling Swan in Soi Chaiyapoon a couple of months ago it was suggested that this year we have an Anzac Day Golf Tournament. The concept was born and it was decided that the venue was to be Rayong Country Club so the golf course was booked accordingly. We ended up with 18 players consisting of 14 regular golfers and 4 “beginners”.

Martin Todd & Andrew Allen pose with their trophies.

Assembling at The Growling Swan at 0630 hrs a Dawn Service was conducted and breakfast kindly provided by Peter Grey. Due to the early assembly we headed off just before 0800 hrs and arrived to find that even though it was one of the Sports Days, the course was practically deserted which was surprising as the total cost for green fee, cart & caddy was a mere 550 baht per person with shared cart.

The golf course was in quite good condition with the greens in excellent shape but most of the bunkers were fairly ordinary and many of them had pools of water in them. The weather was fine & hot with some thunder threatening later in the round but as usual we got through the day without getting wet.

We split the field into 2 flights, one flight for the regular golfers and the other for the “beginners”, using the Calloway system to calculate their scores. We also had nearest the pins on the 7th & 16th holes.

The winner of the inaugural Anzac Day Trophy was Martin Todd with a fine 39 points and Frank Donnelly was second with 38 points. Mike Allidi’s 74 off the stick was only good enough for him to secure third spot with 37 points, 1 point ahead of Ken Bernek in fourth place and your writer fifth with 33 points. Andrew Allen won the Beginner’s trophy with 30 points and Fred Dineley came second with 27 points.

Main Flight

1st Martin Todd (9) 39pts

2nd Frank Donnelly (23) 38pts

3rd Mike Allidi (3) 37pts

4th Ken Bernek (16) 34pts

5th Peter Blackburn (12) 33pts

Beginner’s Flight

1st Andrew Allen 30pts

2nd Fred Dineley 27pts

3rd Geoff Phillips 23pts

4th Peter Grey 17pts

There was a special award on the day called the “Tin Cup Trophy” which was awarded to our host for the day, Peter Grey, from The Growling Swan, who with tremendous perseverance and despite screams of horror from his caddy proceeded to hit 8 brand new balls into the water on hole number 5! Well done Pete & thanks for a great day.

Watson doubles up as the scribe takes monthly honours

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Derek Brook

Wednesday, May 2, Khao Kheow – Stableford

Is it really hot at present or is it just old age catching up? I certainly do not seem to remember it being this hot for a number of years, and it was brought home to me when one of our regular players (who walks the courses) said he was going to take the month off as it was too hot.

Dick Warberg, left, presents the MBMG ‘golfer of the month’ award to Derek Brook.

Still on this morning we still had a good turnout at Bert’s for our trip to Khao Kheow and it was nice to see that the present worry about the exchange rate did not stop two of our players turning up in their new cars. It is nice to have ‘Rich’ friends.

Once there we were soon booked in and onto the first tee. The test for the day was to be the A & C Nines and for me this is the hardest 18 holes here. We were away on time and in the next 18 holes we were able to move at our own pace, although as we came to the last few holes we could see the groups ahead.

The group behind, one of our own with all players walking, struggled a little in the heat and let the group behind them through as the players all had carts. Yes it was hot, however towards the end of the round the storm clouds gathered and we had some rain drops with lightning in the distance, however it circled the course and we were able to get in dry.

The course itself was as one expects Khao Kheow to be, except after the hard ‘High Season’ usage there is some wear and at this time of the year it is time for the course to recover. The greens were still fast and tricky and the rough as difficult to get out of as usual. So soon around it was into the showers and up to the restaurant for a bite and a cold drink before we hit the road back.

Back at Bert’s we went into the presentation and the winner with a fine 41 points, and a gross 71 was Bob Watson, fine golf indeed. He was followed by Max Scott who shot 36 points in second, in third was Dick Warberg with 35 points and in fourth was Alan Sullivan with 33.

We then had the MBMG Golfer of the Month presentation and it was good news for the scribe as the MBMG Golfer of The Month was yours truly, Derek Brook. Didn’t I do well! Just lucky that Mashi had a bad leg!

Near Pins: Max Scott (2), Alan Sullivan, Brian Parrish

Friday, May 4,Treasure Hill – Stableford

Another long drive out to this course that was only spoilt for the scribe when the bus in front did not have its engine cover on and what seemed a bolt from the engine compartment slowly arched through the air, to the car, to bounce off the windscreen. One of the joys in life here on the roads - pointless taking the bus’s number, just grin and bear it.

So book in and off we go. I thought the course was in quite good condition; mind it was a bit windy so we visited to the rough a lot. The greens were in reasonable condition so you had to be careful but all in all at the present time this is a course well worth a visit.

Soon around it was time for a cold shower before getting into the cars for the drive back. One of the problems of the ‘bounce off the windscreen’ bit is that you can see it all the way back, still in the way these things happen we had quite a good and quiet drive back and were soon at Bert’s.

After the ‘Golfers Special’ we were soon into the presentation which had a ring of normality, so as you have seen photos of them all, I didn’t take one. So the winner with a great 40 points, and gross 72, was Bob Watson at his best. In second was Mike Gaussa with 36 points and in third was Brian Parish with 35 points.

Near Pins: Mike Gaussa, Max Scott, Andre Van Dyke, Mike O’Brien

McArdle returns to form

IPGC golf from The Links

Sunday, April 29, Green Valley – Stableford

This was the only fixture this week, with the mid-week IPGC medal taking precedence for most, but the 8 players who made the trip found the course in good condition, although the greens were a little on the slow side.

Joe McArdle.

Joe McArdle’s rich vein of form continued as he took first spot with 38 points, 3 clear of the field. There was a 3-way count back for the minor places on 35 points, Jon Lay missing out after scoring only 16 on the back 9. Alec Hoare took second place after scoring 19 on the back, one ahead of Brian Talbot with 18.

There were no ‘2’s registered so the pot again carried forward to Green Valley the following Sunday.

1st Joe McArdle (12) 38pts

2nd Alec Hoare (18) 35pts

3rd Brian Talbot (13) 35pts

4th Jon Lay (8) 35pts

Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi Buakhao at 9.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and for Rayong Green Valley every Sunday. Sign up at the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A full schedule of courses can be found on the IPGC website www.ipgc.org.

Cox claims top score of the week

PSC Golf Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green

Monday, April 30,Pleasant Valley G.C. - Stableford

Just 2 groups today for our visit to Pleasant Valley, which is one of the less popular courses on our schedule.

We teed off on the 10th hole, which at least meant that we would play the best nine holes as the inward nine. There is some serious renovation work taking place on the 15th and 16th holes which looks as though it will improve the unpopular par 5, fifteenth hole, and may even make it possible to remove the internal O.B. – we live in hope. The most pleasant thing about the course today was that there was a gentle breeze throughout the round, making the conditions a lot more bearable than recently.

Geoff Parker enjoyed a successful return to Pattaya after a 2 month work break.

Lee Butler and Tore Eliassen shared the best score of the day, with Tore taking the honours on the count back. Geoff Parker made a welcome return to Pattaya after another 2 month stint without picking up a golf club, and had a respectable score of 35 points to come in third.

1st Tore Eliassen (14) 37pts

2nd Lee Butler (16) 37pts

3rd Geoff Parker (16) 35pts

Near Pins: Geoff Parker, Lee Butler, Mashi and Tore Eliassen

Wednesday, May 2,Khao Kheow A&C – Stableford

We arrived at Khao Kheow to find the course almost deserted, although another society had teed off an hour earlier. Setting off on the A nine, it seemed like we would be in for another sweltering day, but after 9 holes a serious thunder storm passed close by, and although we never had a drop of rain, the temperature dropped at least 5 degrees, giving us perfect golf conditions for the back nine.

The good conditions weren’t matched by good scores however, and Colin Greig won the day with a very modest 32 points.

1st Colin Greig (7) 32pts

2nd Geoff Parker (16) 28pts

3rd William Macey (18) 27pts

Near Pins: Dave Keats and Geoff Parker

Friday, May 4,Crystal Bay B&C – Stableford

There was much discussion over breakfast about the ageing members of our golf society and those currently undergoing medical treatment, so a special mention to Geoff Hart, Gerry Cooney, Peter Habgood, Eddie Martin, Jack Robertson et al, - get well soon guys and we look forward to seeing you back on the fairways.

We arrived at Crystal Bay to find the course quiet and the conditions not too hot, with a steady breeze coming in off the sea. The round progressed smoothly until a brief 5 minute shower of rain caught us on the 17th tee, but not even that brief interruption could disrupt Geoff Cox’s fine round, and he cruised home to win with a fine score of 40 points, ahead of Geoff Parker who enjoyed his third podium finish of the week.

1st Geoff Cox (16) 40pts

2nd Geoff Parker (16) 38pts

3rd Tony Robbins (13) 34pts

Near Pins: Tony Robbins and Colin Greig (2).

Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.

We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are always welcome. For more information call Dave on 087 146 9978, or email [email protected].

Paul takes Jack’s cake

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Paul Bourke, left, winner of Jack’s Birthday Cup, is congratulated by the General.

Monday, April 30, Burapha – Stableford

Unusually busy here for this time of year, as the 15 Outbackers had to wait almost to their allotted tee time to play the C & D course. When they did start, it was right behind a Korean five-ball who seemed to take ages to complete the first hole and everyone was dreading a slow round. However, a word in the marshall’s ear seem to do the trick, as they moved onto another loop after nine holes and the day ram pretty smooth in the end.

A truly amazing cake.

Some brilliant scores though, as five all shot par or better with John O’Keefe leading the way together with Rosco, both on 39pts but edging him out on count back and Peter Stomebridge following them in on 38.

Welcome back to Stuart Tinkler, Ken Davidson and Steve Durey and also to Colin Jones having his first game with the Outback.

There were two ‘2’s from Jim Brackett (hole 5) & Paul Bourke (hole 8).

1st John O’Keefe (17) 39pts

2nd Rosco Langoulant (14) 39pts

3rd Pete Stonebridge (16) 38pts

4th Ivan Plunkett (19) 37pts

5th Paul Bourke (9) 36pts

Monday, April 30, Khao Kheow – Stableford

Another 16 Outbackers on the A & B nines and like Burapha, some very good scoring with another five playing to par or better, which is particularly unusual here.

Suzi got the day’s top score with 40pts to receive a hefty handicap cut of 1.2, as Paul Greenaway led the rest of the field in with an excellent gross 78 for 39pts from John Stafford on 37. Ian Heddle matched Paul’s gross 78 for 36pts and the Sugarman also did well with his 36.

A couple of newbies out there as well and a special welcome to them, namely Peter Daff and Robert Barnes.

There were five ‘2’s from Bob Pearce (Hole 5), John Stafford on Hole 12 & Hole 17 and Paul Greenaway & Mark McDonald also on hole 17.

1st Suzi Lawton (19) 40pts

2nd Paul Greenaway (9) 39pts

3rd John Stafford (18) 37pts

4th Ian Heddle (6) 36pts

5th Sugar Ray Handford (19) 36pts

Wednesday, May 2, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford

Our usual Tuesday group was shifted to Wednesday because of the holiday, with the slightly earlier start of 8.30. Eleven players started in the tournament; 2 of them ladies, who once again had to play in their comp and the other nine playing in one division; plus 3 Aussies who came along for a hit.

Towards the end of the round, we were caught by a storm but most just about scrambled home without getting too wet or living too dangerously.

Nothing special about the scoring as Laong had the best score of the day to win the ladies, with the best of the men being Bob Pearce and Svein Sorenson, both scoring 35pts and Bob getting the nod on count back.

There were no ‘2’s.

Men

1st Bob Pearce (17) 35pts

2nd Svein Sorenson (15) 35pts

Ladies

Laong Gatepratum (23) 36pts

Wednesday, May 2, Siam Plantation – Stableford

It felt good to be back here after a long absence, back at one of the best courses around but we had to wait before we could set off as a storm threatened. The late tee time of 11.56 for the 16 Outbackers was delayed a further hour as we watched the storm appear to engulf Jomtien and the Green Valley area, then slip past the back of us, picking off Pattaya Country Club before swirling around and hitting Plantation. We fortunately missed the worst of it, although it was pretty spectacular to watch from the elevated vantage point.

The starter, who knew us well from a few years back, suggested a mini shotgun start to help everybody get round in what turned out to be a very pleasant afternoon’s golf in some very pleasant playing conditions. So our four groups headed off to the first four tees on Sugarcane and completed the round in good time with the other nine being Pineapple.

Ron Dickie was the star of the day, with a brilliant 42pts (74 gross) playing off 8; six shots clear of the second placed man, course specialist Chris Davisson, on 36. Jim Brackett, having his last game before heading home for a few months, took third with 35, with Paul Greenaway grabbing the final podium place on 33.

Finally, welcome to Gordon Everingham having his first game with the Outback and his first game at Plantation.

There were two ‘2’s from Paul Greenaway and John O’Keefe.

Note: The Outback will be at Plantation every Wednesday throughout the low season, with a couple of exceptions – check our weekly schedules, at the regular tee time of 8.44, limited to four groups, so sign up early if you want to play here for a very good rate.

1st Ron Dickie (8) 42pts

2nd Chris Davisson (10) 36pts

3rd Jim Brackett (6) 35pts

4th Paul Greenaway (9) 33pts

Friday, May 4,Green Valley – Stableford

On this fine Friday morning there were 48 signed up to play in Jack Moseley’s birthday competition with many starting the day at the Outback for breakfast and to greet the birthday boy!

At Green Valley, Capt’ Steve and Suzi were busy organising the start with Jack leading the way in the first group. The course was in great shape, the weather perfect and a round of a little over 4 hours.

Back in the clubhouse Jack and Chad (Barry Chadbourn) were processing the cards whilst quaffing a few ales, why not? After-all, it was a special day and as there were two different competitions there was a lot of work to get through and a special thanks to John & Jeff for the beer and also to Khun Nirand, the Green Valley Manager, for the shirt.

Those who played were joined by some friends at the Outback, who came to enjoy in the party atmosphere and where the staff had decked out the bar with the usual balloons. Just a little behind schedule, at around 5.40, it was time for the presentation as the Outback’s regular MC, Nigel Cannon called order and led the singing of ‘Happy Birthday’ to Jack. Nigel then relayed some good wishes from a number of friends who could not be there today.

There were to be four divisions today, with four winners in each, an overall winner and also a sponsored “hidden pairs” better ball event. At the start of the day everybody drew a number and their partner for the round was the other person with the same number but of course nobody knew who was playing with who until now. The Outback have done this before and it has proved to be quite good fun and now will return on a regular basis, sponsored by Greg Hirst of the DeVere Financial Group.

The scoring was generally excellent with the CSS for the day working out to be 69 (two below the SSS of 71) for you CONGU fans, with Graham Woollett being announced the winner of Div D with 41pts, seven clear of the second placed, Jim Payne.

In Div C, the man himself, General Jack returned to a bit of form after a long time in the wilderness which has seen his handicap drift out to 19.5. He played with an orange ball today, a promise he made after his disastrous golf on the recent Songkhran trip, until such time as the rot stopped. Well, after his 40pts today he can now return to a white ball again.

Div B went to Murray Hart (39pts) from Kathy Doody (38pts) and a fiercely competitive Div A, had Bob Newell just beating Paul Greenaway on count back, both with 41pts who in turn were beaten by the overall winner, also from Div A, Paul Bourke with 42.

The hidden pairs prize went to Kathy Doody and Graham Woollett with 50pts and the four near pin 500 Baht Outback vouchers went to Dave Earthrowl (4th), Martin O’Neill (9th), Mark McDonald (12th) and Nigel Cannon on the 16th.

Following the final award Nigel announced that the complementary buffet, prepared by the Outback staff and donated by Jack, was ready.

The evening was not over yet! Jack was presented with a superb cake that included the Outback logo. He then rang the bell to much applause; this was followed by some fireworks provided by Rosco and Pottsy.

Finally, there will be another Birthday Cup, this time Bob Lindborg’s on Monday, May 14th at Khao Kheow - It is a better ball event, so sign up in pairs, if you can’t find a partner, we will find one for you.

Allidi shows his class

PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg

Mike Allidi, The Admiral & Frank Donnelly.

Peter Blackburn

Monday, 30th April – Bangpakong – Stableford

Thanks to a late inclusion we had seventeen starters for the day’s competition at Bangpakong Riverside Country Club and we all assembled at Caf้ Kronborg looking forward to the day. After welcoming big Dr John Naponick here from Cambodia for some well earned R & R we departed the Kronny right on time at 0815 hrs.

After the 65 minute drive we arrived at the course to find it fairly busy so it was obvious an early tee off was not on the cards. As it was we managed to get our first group away right on schedule at 1000 hrs in glorious weather conditions with just a welcome gentle breeze to cool things down as it was rather humid. The course was looking great as usual although the greens were not as slick as normal due to many of them having residual sand. Moving along at a fairly good pace a few drink stops were necessary and our full round was completed in four hours and fifteen minutes.

There were 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 17 and B Flight for 18 and over. There were rewards for nearest the pin on all four par threes and longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens with joint sponsors being Walter Baechli, Rita Zoebelli & Monzart Bronze – many thanks to them.

Martin Todd, The Admiral & Marie Rowles.

That very fine golfer Mike Allidi tore the course apart with his 68 off the stick (14 pars & 4 birdies) to win the A Flight with 43 points. Big Ken Bernek came second with a fine 40 points and in a count back for third place Martin Todd (21 point back nine) just edged out his old Aussie mate Mike Gosden (20 point back nine), both having 39 points.

The B Flight was well won by Frank Donnelly with 43 points, 6 points clear of Alain Taddei in second place. Another count back was necessary to determine third place with Dave (The Admiral) Richardson (16 point back nine) just ahead of Graham Richardson (12 point back nine), both on 31 points.

A Flight (0-17)

1st Mike Allidi (3) 43pts

2nd Ken Bernek (16) 40pts

3rd Martin Todd (8) 39pts

B Flight (18+)

1st Frank Donnelly (21) 43pts

2nd Alain Taddei (18) 37pts

3rd Dave Richardson (26) 31pts

Near Pins: 4th – Frank Donnelly; 7th – Mike Winfield; 13th – Dave Richardson; 16th – Mike Allidi

Long Putts: 9th – Mike Gosden; 18th – Takeshi Hakozaki

The Compass Cap was won by Bo Cardwell after having lessons from a golf pro over the weekend (maybe a lesson to be learnt there), but it was with much relief to yours truly who very nearly went from chocolates to boiled lollies in the space of just 4 days! Deefa the Dog was present as usual and collected several donations to charity from the generous Kronny gang.

Thursday, May 3, Mountain Shadow – Stableford

A very good low-season field of 21 golfers signed up to tackle the challenging Mountain Shadow layout. Assembling at Caf้ Kronborg we welcomed from Australia Bob McPhail, Lionel and Marie Rowles & Tony Leece. We departed on time at 0815 hrs and 50 minutes later arrived at the course after several suggestions during the journey that the weather would not be kind to us today. Oh ye of little faith! Very rarely do Caf้ Kronborg golfers get wet whilst playing golf in Pattaya and today was to be no exception.

It was not too busy and our first group was able to tee off 30 minutes ahead of schedule at 0930 hrs in hot and humid conditions with very little wind. The course was looking quite good although very dry in parts and the greens were just a tad off their usual tip top condition although still super quick at times for putts from above the hole. The advantage of the dry fairways was that there was significantly more run on them which was especially pleasing to The Admiral.

We progressed at a very good pace and with just one stop for a drink on the back nine we were able to complete our round in four hours and fifteen minutes.

There were 2 flights on the day plus rewards for nearest the pin on the four par threes. Rewards for the longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens were kindly sponsored by Aussie Fred Cuypers.

Once again the course was playing fairly tough with just 3 players bettering their handicap and Australian Martin Todd continued his good form by winning the A Flight with 37 points, 2 points ahead of Ken Bernek in second place. A three-way count back for third spot on 34 points saw Walter Baechli (19 point back nine) edge out Stu Rifkin and Mike Gosden who both had 16 points on the back nine.

New arrival Marie Rowles had a fine 39 points to win the B flight from Henry Wong in second place with 37 points and Rita Zoebelli was third with 34 points.

A Flight (0-17)

1st Martin Todd (8) 37pts

2nd Ken Bernek (16) 35pts

3rd Walter Baechli (16) 34pts

B Flight (18+)

1st Marie Rowles (20) 39pts

2nd Henry Wong (23) 37pts

3rd Rita Zoebelli (24) 34pts

Near Pins: 5th – Stu Rifkin; 8th – Graham Buckingham; 15th – Peter Blackburn; 17th – Dave Richardson

Long Putts: 9th – Marie Rowles; 18th – Peter Blackburn

The Compass Cap (awarded for worst score on the day) was won by Dick Braimbridge, and Hunter paraded Deefa the Dog who once more collected many donations to charity from the ever generous Kronny crew.

A walk in the park for James Smith

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society ended April with a visit to Phoenix to play a stableford competition over the Mountain and Lakes nines on the final day. It must be said that the course was not in good condition with greens coming out of coring and although fairways were quite good the course wore a distinctly “tired” look. However it is always a joy to play and a large field had assembled to give it a go, divided into two flights at seventeen and under.

In the top flight Alex Sala continued his consistent form with 32 points for third whilst Brian Talbot joined Seil Revels on 33 points for a share of the win. Seil’s efforts brought him the best gross figures of the day, eighty.

In the second flight John Mason took third with 35 points despite hating every putt he attempted on the “egg-box” greens. In second was Jean Morel after a long break with the group, showing he had lost none of his form in the meantime, with a fine 37 points. The winner was twenty handicapper James Smith whose form was so good his forty two points came from a round which was only six off the best gross figure of the day. He had been helped in part by a birdie ‘2’ on Mountain eight and he shared the pot with Dave Lehane who had accomplished a similar feat on Lakes two.

The Booby Bevy went to old friend Bob Boyle who managed to better most of his infrequent rounds with the group but always plays his golf with a broad smile. And that skill was the most essential one at Phoenix on a day when patience would be tested on the greens.

Bobby Dazzler

On Friday, 4th May, after an absence of many months the Pattaya Golf Society visited Green Valley with more than two dozen golfers, looking forward to a stableford competition on the fine course. The welcome was extremely feisty and an extra two hundred baht was demanded because we had exceeded our booked figure, on a relatively empty course!! Needless to say hasty negotiations took place and the insistence of the organiser, club member Mr Len, won the day but it was not the start the group had hoped for.

Thankfully the course was in better fettle than the staff and a close competition ensued. The cut was at fifteen and under and in the top flight Mark Stanley posted 35 points for third place. Ahead, sharing the win were Wichai Tananusorn and Jason Cole with 37 points. Jason took the best gross honours with 78, by virtue of his lower handicap but Wichai had the pleasure of sharing the ‘2’s pot with his peer as well as Stuart Thompson.

In the second flight Evan Millar put together a solid round of 33 points for third place with Pat Murphy posting 35 points for second on his recent return from Australia. The flight winner was Bobby Shirkey with 38 points on a day when everything seemingly went well. It was a rare honour for the diminutive Scot and one thoroughly well received by his colleagues.

At the end of the day the patience of the golfers had been rewarded by a good day’s golf but a cloud still remains after the attitude of the front desk staff.

Murphy mauls the field with 40-pointer

Blue Moose Golf Society

Winner Rich Murphy, left with runner-up Gerd Seidel.

The field was a bit light today with only two threesomes teeing off at the Burapha Golf Course this 2nd of May. Could be that it was not trophy day so a few laid back, saving themselves for May 30th. In any event, the group played courses A and C, originally booked for A and B but changed at the last minute. Burapha has a tournament coming up so they are trying to keep the course in good shape.

Coming back to the Blue Moose, cards were tallied and snacks were served. Rich Murphy came in with a whopping 40 points followed by Gert Seidel with 33 points. We won’t talk about the rest of the gang.

Jay ‘Burns’ up Green Valley for the Medal

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Steve Ellison

Monday, April 30, Green Valley (White tees) – Monthly Medal

A Flight

1st Jay Burns (4) net 68

2nd Steve Snelgrove (6) net 69

3rd Gareth Gill (8) net 70

B Flight

1st Jeff Cordeiro (12) net 70

2nd Gabriel Enright (15) net 70

3rd Phil Smedley (12) net 70

First, the new shirts are in! 6 colours and all sizes so come on down and get supplied for the hot summer ahead! We have also stocked up on our T-shirts that are great for the driving range.

Steve Snelgrove congratulates April Medal winner Jay Burns.

Nine groups took to the course today to try and win an Antigua TGC golf shirt as 1st prize for the Monthly Medal. This is becoming a very popular event and it brings out the best of the best on every occasion.

Starting with the B Flight winners, there were a trio of 70’s posted so the back nine became crucial. As it turned out, there was only a stroke between the top three places. Jeff Cordeiro continued his fine form and took the gold with a 41 on the back. Jeff won at Wangjuntra the previous week and is on a hot streak, so watch out.

He was followed in by Gabriel (webmaster) Enright on 42 in second. Winging his way back to Sydney by now, Gabriel is taking back a new set of teeth with him. Gabe built our website so have a look at his work there at golfclubpattaya.com. Fellow Australian Phil Smedley rounded out that treble 70 with a 43 on the back for a very well played round at the lovely Green Valley.

A Flight was led by Mr. Jay Burns, our Monthly Medal winner for April. You will always find Jay with either a golf club or cigar in his hand, and is an accomplished ‘slasher’, playing off a 4 handicap. He’s here for 3 more weeks so get used to seeing his name.

Vancouverite Stevie Snelgrove was once again the bridesmaid and only a shot behind off his 6 handicap. Gareth Gill rounded out the top three single digit handicappers off his 8 for a net 70. That’s some great golf!

Wednesday, May 2, Treasure Hill (Yellow tees) – Stableford

1st Brian Prudden (19) 37pts

2nd Ian Brimble (7) 36pts

3rd Bob McPhail (13) 36pts

This is a difficult golf course and one forgets that from the yellow tees it is still 6,377 yards long and some of that uphill as well. It is a tight track will little margin for error, so scoring well here is a blessing.

The course was in great shape once again. We have not played Treasure Hill in several weeks since the incident reported here with the verticut greens slashed too deep. Now, all is good and we noticed several more course improvements through the round making this one of the best value for money tracks in Pattaya.

Diego Wells took the helm herding cats with clubs and he had a good following of 5 groups on the day. It was a hot one out there and some fared better than others. If you are a beer drinker on the course, remember to get electrolytes in you between bottles to prevent dehydration. It will help your game immensely by being able to stay focused.

Brian Prudden is a tough competitor, even at 77 years of age. So tough in fact he won the day with his 37 points circled at the top of the scorecard as younger men half his age struggled. Ian Brimble also had a great day to turn in a 36 off his 7 handicap and the recently arrived Ozzy Bob McPhail showed his talents with a 36 as well, just losing out on count back by a shot. Well played guys!

Friday, May 4,The Emerald (White tees) – Stableford

1st John Warren (17) 37pts

2nd Ken Aihara (5) 36pts

3rd Alain Pelsherbe (13) 35pts

Finally, we returned to The Emerald as we had heard it was back in good nick. We had a good day out on this most interesting Nick Faldo track and will go back soon.

‘Little’ John Warren was the man of the match this time out. The Seasider supporter put it all together and beat the field with a 37 point day, which is about the right score on this difficult golf course, he must have been wearing tangerine! Good luck to the Pool on Wednesday mate.

Ken Aihara was back in the game with 36 off his 5 handicap for second and our visiting Frenchman Alain Pelsherbe brought home 35 for third place. Alain was lucky enough to have played Pebble Beach last month and we were all drooling over his photos on his ipad earlier in the day. Tres Bon!

We are going on a One Night in Bangkok Road trip on the 22nd and 23rd and playing Lam Lu Ka and Lotus Valley and staying at the ibis Nana, all for 4,000 baht. Drop by or email us if it strikes your fancy.

It was goodbye to Brian and Marlene, Gabe, Jimmy B. and Stevie Weller today and hello to Mutzie & Gerry Cohen.

Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a fun day out. Just call 085 434 3377 or see our website www.golfclubpattaya .com and for more information mail us: pattaya4golf @gmail.com and see updates at www.facebook.com/golfclubpattaya.

Clive continues, Allan makes winning return

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Monday, April 30, Mountain Shadow - Stableford

We played on Monday this week, as Tuesday was a holiday. Mountain Shadow was the chosen venue, with the course in good order, although the greens are a mere shadow (sic) of their former pace, probably a blessing for most.

Clive Hoseason and Keith Hudson.

Another hot, hot day out on the course, with 90% of the players using a cart, a sign of the times I think. Clive Hoseason (24) continued his recent good run of form, leading the way home with a modest total of 30 points, while second and third needed a count back, after both signed for 29 points; Keith Hudson (20) getting the nod over Jeff Wylie (5) with a back 9 of 18, compared to Jeff’s paltry 13.

Near Pins were won by Jeff, Clive & Allan getting 2.

Thursday, May 3, Treasure Hill - Stableford

Back to our usual Thursday, with a quick return visit to Treasure Hill, where continued course renovations and maintenance will ensure a good course well into the future.

Allan Cassin (11) got it together quickly after his return to Thailand with a good win, posting a solid 32 points, 1 ahead of Dave Edwards (17) who came home in an ambulance after a fine 20 points on the front 9. The final podium position went to Brian Maddox (21) with 30 points, courtesy of a nice NTP and birdie conversion on 17, not so good on the 18th though.

Near pins were won by Brian, as mentioned, while Dave got both on the Front 9, converting the 6th for a nice birdie 2.

Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 0890941841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Kari makes it a double for the week

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, April 30, The Emerald – Stableford

Amazingly we had 29 players out today so there were two divisions for the men plus nearest the pins and the ‘2’s comp.

Roger De Jongh and Kari Kuparinen - division winners at Emerald on Monday.

The course was totally deserted upon arrival and the first group teed off 30 minutes ahead of our scheduled time of 10.00 a.m. ‘Pick and place’ was considered on the first tee as normally here the fairways are very spongy, but this was a no go today. After the past few games with temperatures reaching over 40 degrees, there was a cool breeze here today which delighted everyone.

The equal cut in the cards today was 6-18 in division 1 and 19+ for division 2. Scoring well lately, Kari Kuparinen won the first division with 33 points, Chris Voller was second on 31 and Colin James scored 9 points on the front nine and 21 on the back to beat Tony Thorne 21/14 on the count back for third as they both came in with 30 points.

The Antwerp boy returned and won division 2 with 36 points, well done Roger De Jongh. Walter Webber, with his last game with us for six months, came in second two points behind and derrick Cane was third with 33.

Near pins went to Kari Kuparinen, Marty Rock (2), Keith Woolley, Derrick Cane (3) and Bryan Rought.

In the ‘2’s there was a rollover from Phoenix in division 1 and Chris Voller birdied the 5th and Marty Rock the 7th to share the pot. In division 2 there were four rollovers and with two ‘2’s on the 13th today, Terry Redding and Bryan Rought were both smiling at the presentation back at Siam Cats.

Friday, May 4,Eastern Star - Stableford

There were eight groups out today and what a difference a week makes with the weather; with a strong cooling breeze coming off from the coast it made for a comfortable round compared with the last two Friday’s. The greens here at Eastern Star are getting slightly better but we think this will still take a few more weeks.

Improving after his winning score on Wednesday of 33, Kari Kuparinen playing off 6, shot a gross 37 on the front nine and the same on the back nine to come in with 40 points and win division 1. Mikael Andersson with an amazing 22 points on the back nine took second place on 39 and Frank Kelly, who also shot 22 on the back, was third with 37.

Ian Plummer, just back from China and now a resident here, won division 2 with 35 points. Andy baber came in second two points behind and Albert’s mate Terry Redding was third with 32.

Near pins were claimed by Kari Kuparinen (2), Joe McArdle, Marty Rock, Marty Aronson, Ian Plummer, Terry Redding and Bryan Rought.

Only one ‘2’ today and that was in division 1 on the 13th for Marty Rock.

Two-wheeled warriors take on Pattaya MTB Challenge 2012

City Mayor Ittipol Kunplome was an enthusiastic supporter of the event.

Manoon Makpol

Sunday, May 6 saw the second Pattaya Mountain Bike Challenge take place on Thappraya Hill in south Pattaya, with a large number of lycra clad athletes assembling at the start line on their state of the art two-wheeled machines to tackle the testing 6.5km long course.

The event was organized by the Pattaya Bicycle Association and the Royal Aeronautics Sports Association of Thailand (RASAT) and was incorporated in this year’s Air Sea Land Games, which run from May 1-31.

Cyclists get to grips with one of the tough off-road sections.

Riders from all ages and abilities were in attendance and had to be split into 18 separate divisions to enable a fair playing field for all. The Open categories were held over 4 rounds beginning at 9 a.m. and included cash prizes ranging from 300 baht to 2,000 baht for the top finishing riders.

Some notable winners on the day were Phumin Wiengjan in the 85kg plus division, Somjai Jaithien in the women’s 35 years and above category, and Admiral Thet Suebwongrung, who placed first in the men’s 65 years and above class.

Camaraderie was shown in abundance.

The course was a demanding mixed terrain route that took riders around the Pattaya fitness park and radio hill and included several tight off-road sections and steep hill climbs.

On hand at the start line to set the riders on their way was Pattaya City Mayor, Ittipol Kunplome, together with Group Capt. Weerayuth Ditsayasrin, president and secretary of Royal Thai Aircraft Preservation and Development, and Manich Nongyai, president of the Pattaya Bicycle Association. The Mayor said he was a keen supporter of events such as this, which promote exercise as a means of maintaining good health for citizens of all ages and the bike racing also provided another draw to attract tourists to the city.

The steep hills tested everyone to the limit.

All set at the start line.

MTB riders collect their well deserved trophies.

‘Dolphins’ back on the winning trail

Thai Premier League Season 2012

Pattaya United’s Kim Do-Yeon (20) scores his side’s second goal against BBCU at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok, Saturday, May 5. (Photo/Pattaya United FC)

Pattaya United got back to winning ways last Saturday with a 2-0 away win over struggling BBCU at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok.

In a tense first half, the ‘Dolphins’ were given a reprieve when BBCU’s Jacob Aikhionbare saw his powerful header rebound off the foot of the Pattaya post with goalkeeper Narit left stranded. Indeed the United shot stopper would be called on several times in the opening 45 minutes to produce fine saves to keep the scores level at the break.

The Dolphins came out in more determined mood in the second half and broke the deadlock in the 64th minute when Paul Ekollo made a darting run in the inside channel to latch onto a fine through pass and slot the ball past the advancing keeper to give United the lead.

The score would remain at 1-0 until the first minute of injury time when United’s Korean misfielder Kim Do-Yeon cut in from the left wing and unleashed a fierce shot from the edge of the area that flew past the BBCU keeper into the roof of the net and secured all three points for the visitors.

United have now moved up to seventh place in the standings, level on points with close rivals Chonburi FC who slipped to a surprise 1-0 defeat away at Army on Friday night. Muang Thong United continue to lead the way after their win over Osotspa but defending champions Buriram are only four points behind with two games in hand.

Pattaya United’s next match is a home fixture on Sunday, May 11 against Osotspa M-150 at the Nongprue Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Sarawut Phetsiri crowned winner of 2012 Thailand Optimist Championship

The 2012 Thailand Optimist Championship came to a close last Monday after three days of racing off Ocean Marina Yacht Club in some of the most challenging conditions the youth sailors have experienced.

Going into the final day, 2011 national champion, Chaninat Poolsirikot had a one point lead over Sarawut Phetsiri, with Pongsapat Pumyam a further two points back in third. All was to play for with three more races scheduled and the drop race to come into play.

Sarawut took the win in the first race, with Malaysian entry Connie Riverra Tsen in second and Suthon Yampinit in third. Pongsapat scored a sixth with Chaninat finishing eighth. In the second race, the top three tracked each other around the course and Chaninat fought back with a second place finish, behind Sarawut in first and Pongsapat in third.

The title went down to the wire and was decided in the final race of the series.

Markey Lilienthal saved his best for last, taking the win in the final race ahead of Sarawut in second and Nopporn Boonchard in twelfth. Sarawut’s second was enough to take the overall title with Pongsapat in second and Chaninat third.

In 1976 the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand started Junior Sailing, a programme to encourage and train young Thai sailors and send them to compete in international sailing events. In the same year, YRAT started what was then called the Optimist Thailand Championship Cup, known today as the Thailand Optimist Championship.

The best performing girl this year was Chaninat, the 2011 winner and winner of the 2012 Asian Sailing Championships (Girls Division). Second in the girls division went to Connie Riverra Tsen with Kanapan Pachatikapanya in third.

In the Under 12 division, Voravong Ratcharttanarak placed first with Suthon Yampinit in second and Kamonchanok Klahan in third.

The best performing international youngster was Connie Riverra Tsen (Malaysia) with Brandon Sung (Malaysia) in second and Hong Kong youngster Calum Gregor in third.

Now in its 36th year, the Thailand Optimist Championship is as competitive as ever, with leading Thai juniors, international teams and regional champions competing for the title. 110 youngsters from nine countries competed this year and while prizes were presented at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club, adult sailors looked on at the sailing stars of the future.

The 2012 Top of the Gulf Regatta was due to close on Tuesday with the final races in keelboat and multihull classes at Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Jomtien. A full round-up of this year’s event will be featured in next week’s Pattaya Mail. (Source - Infinity Communications)

Barbarians bask in glory at Pattaya Rugby Festival

Thai Barbarians take on Southerners in the final.

The Amari Orchid Pattaya Chris Kays Memorial Rugby Tournament took place at Horseshoe Point last weekend and featured 16 teams from six countries taking part.

The final saw the Thai Barbarians face off against the Southerners, with the former using some slick passing moves to race into a 10-0 lead by half time. The Southerners fought back gamely in the second period and used their superior physical size to their advantage to narrow the gap to 10-7, however, the Barbarians were able to hold onto their lead to the final whistle and were deservingly crowed as champions and winners of the Cup.

In the other finals, the Shield was won by Thammasat University who were victors over Bangkok Japanese by a score of 24-0, Brutal Surin beat the Panthers 12 points to 5 to take the Bowl, and the Pau Ma Tei Barbarians triumphed 14-12 over Watsrichan Old Boys in the Plate final.

Note: A full and comprehensive report of the 2-day rugby festival will feature in next week’s Pattaya Mail.
