Smith & Rix ‘burn up’ Plantation
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Sugar Ray, centre, the winner
at Pattana on Wednesday joins the two 43pt men from Siam Plantation; Jim
Smith on the left and Robert Rix on the right.
Monday, May 28, Burapha –
Stableford
21 Outbackers travelled to Burapha to tackle the B and D
courses from the white tees. The day was overcast and very windy especially
on the D nine. The fairways and greens were in good condition and the greens
were very fast but some of the tees are showing a lot of wear and tear for
this time of the year.
Pace of play was good even though there was a five-ball
in front of our groups and we all finished in under 3 hours 40 minutes.
Welcome to new members Mark Wyllie, Aaron Smith, Robert Rix, Alan Grove, Ken
Hole and Michael Welander, and also to Andre Coetzee, who we haven’t seen
for sometime
Winner of Division 2 was Robert Barnes with 35 points off
his 14 handicap, from Andy Makara with 34 points off 27, who beat Ivan
Plunkett on a count back.
Winner of Division 1 was Mark Wyllie with 35 points ahead
of Neil Lavery on a count back with third place going to Rosco Langoulant
with 33 points who also beat Mike Gosden on a count back.
Two ‘2’s to Paul Sharples on B3 and Alan Grove on D2.
Friday winners at Green
Valley, from left, Andre Coetzee, Steve Plant, Mark Riggall and Clyde Smith.

2nd Andy Makara (27) 34pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (19) 34pts
Monday, May 28, Khao Kheow – Stableford
Just a small field of four on the A & B course here at
Khao Kheow, which is still suffering from lack of support due to generally
poor condition. Let’s hope they can sort out their problems and bring this
course back to the standard it should be. Otherwise great value for money as
Suzi cleaned up with a fantastic forty points ensuring her handicap will be
reduced by yet another shot.
1st Suzi Lawton (18) 40pts
2nd Steve Plant (15) 32pts
3rd Martin Kingswood (15) 26pts
Tuesday, May 29, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
There were 17 Outbackers on this fine, cool Tuesday
morning who crossed the highway36 to play Pattaya Country Club’s front 9
twice.
We welcomed some we had not seen for a while; Thai lady
Chop, Patrice, Guy, Serge, John-Claude - four Frenchman and Canadian, Stefan
Hodge making up a true international field.
Whilst there are few players at PCC all are made welcome
by the staff.
The course was in a fairly good condition with fairways
watered and bunkers all raked.
The four ladies playing today from the red tees had their
own competition with PCC ex-caddy and regular Outbacker Laong (22) with 38
points in top spot and another regular Orn (14) runner up with 37.
The men, playing from the white tees first nine and blue
for the second, saw Terry Marney (27) lead the way (again!) with 37 points
and a handicap cut. Guy Canipel (6) came in with a fine 35 for second place
and Alan Whittingham (14) took third with 34 with the final place going to
Serge Yu (18) with 31.
Another enjoyable Tuesday at PCC which the Outback will
continue to support.
There was only one ‘2’, from Chop.
Ladies
1st Laong Gatepratum (22) 38pts
2nd Orn Kanasaengsri (14) 37pts
3rd Chop Daprakhon (10) 36pts
Men
1st Terry Marney (28) 37pts
2nd Guy Canipel (6) 35pts
3rd Alan Whittingham (14) 34pts
4th Serge Yu (18) 31pts
Tuesday, May 29, Laem Chabang - Stableford
Only 11 went to Laem Chabang for our normal Tuesday
outing as some pulled out at the last moment and left us short on numbers
which is disappointing as we need to retain our 4 groups for sports day.
Unfortunately the day got off to a bad start as we due to tee off at 11.52
but the first group didn’t tee off until 12.22 and then we had to endure a
five hour round as we played behind the Pattaya Amateur Golf Society group
from Fairways. It is amazing that when there is slow play everybody blames
Thai 5-balls but these were mostly farang 4-balls, so there you go.
The course (A & C) was good with fast greens and lush
fairways and the day was overcast with a stiff breeze which made for a
challenging but cool round of golf.
Only 1 division with four places and the winner of the
day was Jim Smith with 35 points off his 13 handicap, from Robert Barnes
with 34 points who beat Aaron Smith (13) on a count back with fourth spot
going to Robert Rix (7) on 33 points who beat Rosco also on count back.
There were no ‘2’s
1st Jim Smith (13) 35pts
2nd Robert Barnes (13) 34pts
3rd Aaron Smith (13) 34pts
4th Robert Rix (7) 33pts
Wednesday, May 30, Pattana - Stableford
13 Outbackers travelled up the 331 to play Pattana today,
slightly disappointing numbers, as on Tuesday at Laem Chabang, a couple of
‘no shows’. Once we arrived and checked in, we had the course to ourselves
yet again and started 20 minutes early. The B course was in good condition
although it was a bit wet in places due to either over-watering or rain
during the night but C course was in fine order.
We played from the yellow tees as the whites were looking
a bit long and it seemed fairer to the lads otherwise Moi from the reds, may
have had a bit of a head start; although in the end it didn’t make any
difference.
Sugar continued his form to win the day with a steady
36pts from Greg Hill (35) and third & fourth going to John O’Keefe and Mick
Moore, both on 33.
If you haven’t played there yet, then the next time the
Outback are playing, put your name down as its challenging, good condition
and great value for money.
There were two ‘2’s from Mick Moore (B3) and Stu Sutton
(C3)
1st Sugar Ray Handford (17) 36pts
2nd Greg Hill (19) 35pts
3rd John O’Keefe (17) 33pts
4th Mick Moore (21) 33pts
Wednesday, May 30, Siam Plantation - Stableford
16 Outbackers went to Siam Plantation to play the Tapioca
(B) and Sugar Cane (A) courses and were met by overcast skies and a lovely
gentle cooling breeze. The starter sent the group off 20 minutes early and
all groups completed their round in under 3 hours and 50 minutes, fantastic
compared to Tuesday.
The course was in great condition with great tees,
fantastic fairways and bunkers and fast and flat greens and as a result
players scored accordingly with some great rounds returned.
Best score of the day was by Robert Rix playing off a 7
handicap who parred the course with 43 points and beat on a count back, Jim
Smith on a 13 handicap; third was Stephen Mann (10) with 38 points and
fourth going to Robert Barnes (13) with 36 points. Rosco Langoulant (13) and
Mark Riggall (15) both scored 35, the final podium place going to Rosco on
count back.
There were two ‘2’s to Andy Butterworth and Chris
Davisson both hole 6 on Sugar Cane.
1st Robert Rix (7) 43pts
2nd Jim Smith (13) 43pts
3rd Steve Mann (10) 38pts
4th Robert Barnes (13) 36pts
Friday, June 1, Green Valley - Stableford
37 Outbackers turned out for Green Valley to be greeted
unusually by a 25 minute early first tee time, which was much appreciated by
many and paved the way to a very good pace of play, all getting round in
under four hours.
Even though greens had been sanded and cored earlier in
the week the scores were absolutely amazing, and must have played to many,
more like the putting surfaces of a top class course like Wentworth and
otherwise the course was in its usual good condition.
Welcome back to Tony McDonough and Andy Todd with his
group of friends, some of whom have been here before and also to Clyde
Smith, here at the Outback in Thailand for the first time but came on our
trip to Bintan last year and is also joining us in this year’s international
tournament in Siem Reap next week.
Poor Tony McDonough had an extra welcome back by hitting
his golf ball into a tree which bounced back and hit him on the arm, for
which he received a penalty and in pain he rushed off to the kiosk to get
some ice.
Well, we said the scores were amazing, with no less than
9 players scoring 40 points or more and another 10 playing to handicap or
better, all top notch stuff. Top score of the day came from Clyde with 43pts
to win Div C from Suzi on 40; Div B went to Steve Plant with a fine 42 in
front of Mark Riggall with 41 and Andre Coetzee fired a gross 75 (41pts) to
win Div A, edging out Gary Martin on count back.
There were four ‘2s; three of them on the 16th,
from Paul Greenaway, Craig Jolly and Andy Todd; the other one on the 4th
from Sel Wegner.
Finally, and just for the record, there were seventeen
handicap changes today; 11 of them cuts and the other 6 going up.
Div A (0-12)
1st Andre Coetzee (8) 41pts
2nd Gary Martin (11) 41pts
3rd Jan Eriksen (8) 40pts
Div B (13-16)
1st Steve Plant (15) 42pts
2nd Mark Riggall (15) 41pts
3rd Steve Milne (16) 40pts
Div C (17+)
1st Clyde Smith (24) 43pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (17) 40pts
3rd Mick Moore (21) 39pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road
along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a
hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or call Jack on 087 941

Watson settles for silver after 71 gross
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, May 29, Crystal Bay – Stableford
With this day over we would be 10 months into the MBMG
Golfer of The Year, and this day would provide us with our tenth winner of
the month. Amazing how time flies! So after informing all players of the
situation in this competition, it looked like a walk in the park for Mike
Gaussa this month, unless Max Scott won and Mike was not in the first three.
Stranger things have happened.
The Scribe, right, presents
‘The MBMG Golfer of The Month’ award to Mike Gaussa.
So into cars and a slow bimble along Sukhumwit to the
course. I slipped into Keith’s nice new car and for a change had time to
relax on the way. Keith used to be a coach driver so he knows all about
giving his passengers a smooth ride, and I have to say his new car is really
smooth, so I arrived there well relaxed.
It is easy to book in here, and the price is very good,
but as said the clubhouse and course remind us of better days. So onto the
first tee and we were to play the C & A Nines; the C Nine to me is always
the most difficult and on this day even more difficult as we had a very
strong wind.
The course is a bit threadbare at present, however this
is still a fine place to play, and on this day the rough was particularly
difficult to get out of, and with a new driver I spent a lot of time in the
rough and amongst the trees. Ever noticed how when your ball goes near a
tree it is always behind it, or so it seems?
The greens were difficult as many had been cored; still,
it was the same test for all and I had no doubt that some would be having a
good day. The greens were still quite fast and tricky.
Winners and Bob Watson with Pu
and one of Bert’s finest.
Round over it was back for a cold shower, I say cold as
after a long time running there was a trace of warmth just taking the edge
of the cold, and then dry off with an old friend. No not that, I mean the
towels, thin and raggedy still old friends, very old, at least they did the
job.
Back at Bert’s it was into the presentation when all the
players had assembled. We had two flights, and after playing and running
golf here for many years, I realised how easy it was to slip up when I
played off 16 and if I had been awake it should have been 17. How the mighty
are fallen. Still, the way the day went and with some fine players out
there, it still slipped me into the B Flight. Lucky Falang!
In the A Flight, 0 to 15, the winner with a fine 40
points was Brian Parish. In second we had by far the best gross round of the
day, when Bob Watson shot a gross 71 and scored 39 points, but that is what
handicaps are for. Perhaps he will to play better next time. In third we had
Mashi Kaneta with 38 points. The ever steady Mashi is coming back after a
spell of not being well, which we do not talk about, but ‘Allopurinol’ can
fix it. He has been missed amongst the winners. Well I have to say it!
In the B Flight the winner was Joel Flor with 38 points
ahead of a count back on 36 points that saw an embarrassed Scribe in second
and Mike O’Brien in third. As I said it is nice to be amongst those who play
for the love of the game and not ‘Those Who Must Practice’. Mind, next week
is another start.
Those paying attention will have noticed that the two
with a chance of winning did not appear in the results, although Max Scott
did have 37 points. So The MBMG Golfer of the Month was Mike Gaussa. Well
done Mike, he played well the whole month and it was well deserved.
One weird thing was that on one hole it was impossible to
decide who was nearest the hole after many re-measures, so they had to share
the honour, thus five names on the ‘Near Pins’. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Daryl Evans, Max Scott, Dick Warberg, Tom
Cotton, Paul Alford.

AC’s come up Aces
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, May 29, Pattana -
Stableford
Firstly to Tuesday when we were able to avail ourselves
now of the PSC vouchers for Pattana, the B & C combination being our test
for the day. The course was in good condition and offered a challenge to all
players.
Allan Cassin & Andre Coetzee.
Owen Walkley (11), no, not Talkley, was able to continue
his recent run of form to sign for a strong 37 points whileAndre Coetzee (8)
was next best with a solid 35 points. Half the field broke the 30 point
mark, which was a good effort today.
Near pins were shared around between Owen, Andre, Allan &
Jim.
Thursday, May 31, Phoenix - Stableford
Thursday was our first visit to Phoenix for what seems
like forever, more to do with the fees than any unfavourable course
comments. The Lakes & Mountain were the tests for the day, and while we had
been reading several adverse testimonies, the course seemed ok and fair to
all.
Andre Coetzee (8) improved one spot on the podium from
Tuesday, leading all home with 36 points. Well played to Andre who showed
some commitment to his round after only 13 points on the Lakes, kept his
head on to score a spectacular 23 on the Mountain, the difference between
handicap 8 & 19 maybe! Allan Cassin (13) picked up second spot with 34
points, edging Jeff Wylie (4) on count back.
Near pins went to Andre, Jeff & John.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday &
Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. For the next
few weeks call 0824751307 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!

Al Keith sparkles at Emerald
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, May 28, Pattana B
& C - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Shuichi Kodaka (19) 30pts
2nd Phil Groves (7) 29pts
3rd Paul Hartley (16) 29pts
4th Leslie Cobban (8) 28pts
Having not played at Pattana for some time while the
costs were a little high, perhaps in hindsight it would have been sensible
to play from the yellow tees as other groups did on the day, rather than
from the whites as the total distance played all of the 6,700 plus yards and
reaching many of the par fours was a green too far for even the long
hitters.
Shuich Kodaka.
But when you have slightly more than a stroke a hole in
handicap allowance you can play them as par fives and every now and then
single putt, which is what Shuichi Kodaka did to take another solidly worked
win after starting out on the C course with twenty points going out, he
sadly let it slip gleaning just ten on the homeward nine but it was still
just enough to take the win by a shot from the chasing pair.
These were Phil Groves, who won the count back by a
margin of 14 to 13 from Paul Hartley who although outdriving him for most of
the day could not get the ball in the hole enough times to trouble either
Shuichi or Phil and had to settle for third place.
Leslie Cobban also found it a bit on the long side and
struggled to score but finished in front of a few others in fourth.
On returning to The Haven it was no surprise to anyone
that there were no 2’s in either division.
Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed new
members Lex McDonald, Victor Moshonkin and Brian Dunn and also welcomed back
Jens Gunnarsson and Leslie Cobban.
There was also a special toast to Vic Cross, an old
member but sadly no longer playing, as it was his 86th
Birthday and who had come in for a drink to celebrate with old friends.
Wednesday, May 30, Khao Kheow - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Shuichi Kodaka (18) 39pts
2nd Joe Niisato (12) 35pts
3rd Lex McDonald (11) 34pts
4th Phil Groves (7) 34pts
What is usually a tough course from the yellow tees
turned out to be a lot easier than the previous outing as it appeared that
many had learned the lessons of how to play the course from that experience.
The A and B courses were in fairly good condition, as the scores attested,
although they were not up to the high standards that we have come to expect
from the green keeping staff, but possibly the amount of heavy rain that has
been around recently could be a reasonable excuse for the length of grass
and speed on the greens.
Al Keith.
Shuichi Kodaka did not need to learn any lessons as he
just carried on as usual but on the day got a few more putts to drop as well
as taking advantage of the shorter length overall. He even allowed himself
the luxury of taking just one point from the last two holes after going out
in a very good four under handicap 22 points. At the count up he ran out the
winner easily by four clear points ahead of playing partner Joe Niisato
whose steady round of one over handicap was enough to ensure second place by
a point.
New member Lex McDonald, from Melbourne, who had decided
that even yards seem almost as long as meters after Monday’s round,
performed much better with his first podium placing after winning a count
back with Phil Groves with a better 16 to 14 as he finished strongly with
three pars and eight points on the last three holes. Phil, having bogeyed
the short first, then birdied the long par five but could not put together a
sustained effort to be in a position to push the leaders.
Once again, even with an easier course to play, there
were no 2’s in either division.
Friday, June 1, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Al Keith (6) 41pts
2nd Phil Groves (7) 38pts
3rd Russell Goldsworthy (3) 38pts
4th Paul Hartley (16) 38pts
5th Jens Gunnarsson (15) 35pts
6th Jon Batty (8) 35pts
With many players wanting to get a bit of practice in
prior to the IPGC Monthly Medal to be held over the same course on the
following Wednesday, there was a reasonably large and strong field out to
play what is always a popular course, even though sometimes the lies to be
found in the fairways leave something to be desired. But the greens,
although some of the smallest in the area, are usually in good condition,
and so they were on the day, but as with the other courses played in the
week, suffering from being left too long due no doubt to the weather.
Phil Groves.
The scores still showed that it was very playable with
the best returns of the week led by Al Keith, who is going through a purple
patch at the moment. Having won earlier in the week in the PAGGS competition
at Laem Chabang with a gross 71, he repeated the score with a sparkling
round which netted him 41 points and first place, three ahead of a three-way
tie which was settled by a count back.
Phil Groves was hoping to take a win in his last game out
of Soi 13 before he returns home for a while but Al’s great round stopped
that dream materializing, although he did win the count back with a better
20 to 17 over Russell Goldsworthy who had shown great form on the outward
half with a gross 34 and 21 points but just failed to keep it up on the back
nine. However he still fired a gross 71 that matched Al, and had to be
satisfied with third ahead of Paul Hartley whose prodigious drives put him
in contention once again only to fall foul of one or two bunkers that
refused to let him out until the chance of a point on the hole was gone and
thereby losing the count back to Russell by 17 to 16.
Jens Gunnarsson came back to some form, winning the count
back for fifth place over Jon Batty by 20 to 16 after starting out a little
too slowly to be in contention on a tough day to win.
There were no 2’s in the second division but the large
roll over pool in the first division was shared between Ted Lodge, Russell
Goldsworthy, Jens Gunnarsson, Jon Batty and Brian Libbey.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for
Sean Connolly, Russell Goldsworthy, Seppo Sadeharju and Joe Peters together
with a farewell for Phil Groves who is returning to Oz on a short trip for a
top up.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group,
you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185
Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can
be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Lodge claims ‘2’s pot with an eagle
IPGC golf from The Links
Sunday, May 27, Green
Valley – Stableford
Only one fixture this week, with other competitions
taking precedence on the midweek dates, saw another good turnout for Green
Valley, which remains in excellent condition. Playing conditions were good,
generally overcast but with little breeze, which aided the high standard of
scoring with most players shooting within a shot or two of their handicaps.
Ted Lodge.
South African Andreas Coetzee, playing with The Links for
the first time, finished third on 35 points. Regular players Ger Lodge and
Frank McGowan could only be split on a card playoff after both returned 36
points; Frank taking first spot with 20 points on the back 9 ahead of Ger
with 19.
Ted Lodge scooped the ‘2’s pot, holing his 9-iron second
shot at the par-4 10th for an eagle.
1st Frank McGowan (16) 36pts
2nd Ger Lodge (18) 36pts
3rd Andreas Coetzee (8) 35pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi Buakhao
at 9.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and for Rayong Green Valley every
Sunday. Sign up at the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A full schedule

Lou steals the show
at Green Valley
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday’s winner Lou, left,
with Colin Davis.
Sunday, May 27, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ed Wyckoff (8) 37pts
2nd Claude Harder (15) 36pts
B Flight
1st Lou Szigligeti (18) 39pts
2nd Mike Magill (16) 39pts
Near Pins: No 4 Mike Magill, No 9 Thierry Petrement,
No 12 Dave Mather, No 16 Mike Magill
The story of the day was Lou ‘the traffic warden from
down under’ and his B Flight count back winning 39pts which topped the fine
showing from Mike Magill. Those two scores made Eddy the Eagle’s 38 point
effort seam inconsequential.
A Flight may not have had the man of the match but it did
have Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff top the flight with a fine 37
points. Claude Harder carded a solid even par round to close out the flight.
Dave Mather was the big winner on the day as he had the
only 2.
Monday, May 28, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
1st Paul Hack (13) 36pts
2nd Joe Tynan (33) 35pts
3rd Brien Cooper (23) 34pts
Paul Hack was the only man to shoot his handicap on the
day as he took the A Flight and man of the match honours. Joe sat nav Tynan
wasn’t far back in the hot and humid conditions with 35 points. A player
evidencing form might be just around the corner. Brian Minnie Cooper took
the remaining A Flight bronze.
Colin the donkey Davis was full of frolics as he slotted
home the only 2 of the day.
Wednesday, May 30, Khao Kheow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Thierry Petrement (10) 38pts
2nd Paul Hack (13) 37pts
B Flight
1st Christy Knight (21) 33pts
2nd Geoff Kubas (21) 33pts
It was a much anticipated return to Pete Dye’s Khao Kheow
creation, the task in hand the B & C layouts. Thierry Petrement rose to the
occasion with his A Flight winning 38 points. That was the best score on the
day by one point. The second best score was the property of Paul Hack.
B Flight found task a tough nut to crack as Christy
‘good’ Knight and Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas were tied at the top with just 33
points. When the count back was done Christy was laughing all the way to the
top spot as Geoff had to settle with the silver.
Paul Hack, Dave Stockman, Sean Connolly, Lou Szigligeti
and Brian Cooper shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, June 1, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Hack (13) 38pts
2nd Thierry Petrement (10) 34pts
B Flight
1st Mike Jeffreys (18) 31pts
2nd Lou Szigligeti (18) 31pts
Paul Hack’s scorecard looked as though he had played
another, and nearer set of tees (like the reds), from the balance of the
field as he was the only one to break par on the day, and he did it by 2
strokes. Paul also reversed Wed’s A Flight second place finish over Thierry
Petrement by four points.
Atop the B Flight podium stood Mike the Welsh wizard
Jeffreys, his coils wafting in the summer breeze thanks to a count back
victory over the departing tile boy Lou the traffic warden Spaghetti (sic).
Ed Wyckoff slotted home the only 2 of the day.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1,
Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us
just pop in and add your name to the list, otherwise, why not give Colin a
ring on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Tough times at Treasure Hill
PSC golf from the Blue Goose
Pattaya Country Club saw a group go out on Monday,
May 25 with Jan leading the pack. Weather was good and the course was in
good condition other than the temporary tee boxes. PCC has a very
reasonable flat rate including week-ends and Holidays. There is no
back-up when making the turn so come on out every Monday at 7:26 am.
Joe St. Laurent, left,
with George Richman.
The Blue Moose gang headed out to Treasure Hill on 27
May. Talk about a tough course. Just getting there was a trial for some,
particularly George Richman who got caught in 3 lanes of turning
traffic. George had a scenic tour of Thailand and he barely made it to
the course for the 8:00 am tee time. Once on the course things got a bit
hairy.
Most fairways had a tree in the middle, hazzard on
the right and water on the left. If you did not hit down the middle or
did not make the fairway, you were in tall grass and maybe found your
ball, then the problem of hitting out of the tall grass. The course is
very nice but not suited for 24+ handicappers (sic?).
Back at the Blue Moose the makings of sandwiches of
pulled pork was provided along with various snacks. A tally of the cards
revealed that Joe St. Laurent had a whopping 28 followed by George
Richman with a 27. This being the end of the month, Joe gets to have his
name engraved on the trophy.

Masa rolls on at Eastern Star
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC)
at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
On Monday, 28th May the Pattaya Golf Society enjoyed a
visit to Eastern Star where they played a stableford competition on the
course which was in fine order with the usual slow greens. Fairways though
were greatly improved since the last visit there a month or two ago.
The field of fifteen played as a single flight and once
again it was the form golfers who impressed with Robbie Taylor and Joe
Niisato sharing third place with 34 points, a couple behind long hitting
Garry Olliffe on 36 points. The winner once again was Masa Takano who
completed his sixth round under par in the last nine with a fine 37 points.
Just who can hold him at bay at the moment is the burning question as his
iron play is as fine as any seen with the group in the last year or so.
There were no birdie ‘2’s on the pedestrian greens and
Bryan Barrell’s hero-to-zero status merited the Booby Bevy award, his
winning performance in the monthly charity event a few days before being
nothing but a dim memory.
It was good to visit Eastern Star after a break and
hopefully the condition will be maintained for a few months more at least.
Revels halts Takano bandwagon
On Wednesday, 30th May the Pattaya Golf Society travelled
to an empty Greenwood to play a stableford competition over the A and B
nines which were in fair condition. Sadly, for a course which prides itself
with some of the best greens in the province, the greens were in poor shape
with more than a few of them bare and rutted after misuse in damp
conditions.
However the game was on and making third place was new
member Dave Edwards with 31 points. In second was Steve Evans on his final
round this trip and his 32 points gave him some satisfaction to take back to
South Wales in a few days time. The winner was Seil Revels and the
Korean-American was just the man to take on Masa Takano who has blown all
opponents away during his recent rounds. This time he stuttered and mate
Seil rubbed salt in the wounds as he amassed 37 points to take the win. He
also had the bonus of the only birdie ‘2’, on A6.
Elsewhere Mr Len had “DQ’d” himself after questions were
raised regarding the extension he had had fitted to one of his clubs but it
was later found to be “conforming” in all respects under the Rules of Golf.
The correct decision was made at the time and the Booby Bevy was his only
reward. It had not taken anything away from the day at Greenwood and we all
hope the greens will be in better shape when the group returns next month.
Robbie ‘Taylors’ a fine win
On Friday, 1st June the Pattaya Golf Society visited
Treasure Hill to play a stableford competition on arguably the toughest
course in the province with its 6700 yards plus off the white tees and with
soft fairways being the result of heavy rain the day before. The course was
in good condition and the greens were consistent throughout.
Scores were disappointingly low across the field and
Masanori Takano’s surprise at a third place finish with 30 points drew
embarrassed laughter from the Japanese golfer at the presentation. In second
place with 32 points was Aussie golfer Ken Grimes who has added consistency
to his armoury over the last month. The winner was Robbie Taylor with 35
points and he showed that accuracy not length is the key to doing well at
Treasure Hill.
Masa and Ken Grimes shared the ‘2’s pot for their efforts
on hole six and the Booby Bevy went to a low scoring Tim Knight on his
return to the group.
Thus the PGS golfing week ended, two days rest lay ahead
and golfing “wounds” would be licked. Treasure Hill can certainly teach
tough lessons.

A Maori monthly medal
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Steve Ellison
Monday 28thRayong Green Valley – Stableford,White tees
1st Mick Beresford (20) 39pts
2nd John Emmerson (12) 39pts
3rd Peter Hynard (12) 36pts
4th Dave Mather (8) 35pts
First order of the day is to send our best regards and
deep appreciation to Her Majesty for 60 years on the throne! What a glorious
spectacle we followed on the BBC as London and the nation so proudly
celebrated.
Sonny Goldsbury and Kalani
Makaneole.
It was a weekend of celebrations here also at TGC as we
cheered on Thongchai and Tiger to their fantastic victories at the Wales
Open and The Memorial respectively. What a great weekend!
Some familiar names yet again on the leaderboard, so I
guess it is true that the more you play the better you get. Micky B had a
good week last week here (win!) and so the luck continues on with his win
here today. John Emmerson was once again the bridesmaid and lost on count
back with a 39 as well. The cigars will be lit anyway, don’t you worry.
Our golf manager today, Peter Hynard, shot his handicap
for third to top fellow Englishman Dave Mather on 35, who is scrambling to
get in as many rounds as he can before returning to Blighty.
Wednesday 30th – Crystal Bay – Monthly Medal, White tees.
Diego Wells and Phil Smedley.
1st Sonny Goldsbury (8) net 67
2nd Kalani Makaneole (8) net 68
3rd Kris Kritsanajootra (12) net 68
End of the month, so another Monthly Medal to contest
here at The Golf Club. The coveted shirt was once again up for grabs and
this time out we had a newbie join the club of elite golfers who can wear
the gold starred jersey.
Sonny Goldsbury was having a good round and playing well,
in spite of his double bogey start. He did not let that faze him and just
carried on through the round playing as best he could. At the end of it all,
he stood high (not easy for Sonny!) with the lowest score of the day. Back
at the club, the traditional Hakka was in order and after much coaxing,
Sonny finally performed it for us.
This should be a lesson to us all. How many times have we
had a lousy start and we let it do our heads in and give up too early on the
game? Sonny’s mental toughness is applauded, and the New Zealander takes top
prize on the day.
Kalani just beat out Kris K for second as Kris left the
course to get straight to the airport for his return to Singapore. A
dedicated golfer if there ever was one! Great job to all of you guys, and
thanks for joining us for the event.
Friday, June 1, Royal Lakeside
(White tees) – Stableford
1st Phil Smedley (12) 33pts
2nd Vic Hester (13) 33pts
3rd Diego Wells (10) 28pts
As predicted here a couple of weeks back, Phil Smedley
finally came good and beat the rest at Royal Lakeside to jump to the top of
the podium. Phil shot a very respectable 33 Stableford points on this tricky
course he had only played once before. There were rumours that a skins game
was also taking place, so that was also a major distraction. Well played to
Phil and watch out for this guy in the coming weeks!
Oilman Vic Hester lost on count back to Phil while
today’s Golf Manager Diego Wells took third. Don’t forget to join Diego
every Saturday at 2:00 at the Asia par 3 on Prathumnak Hill.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We
play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day
out. Just call 085 434 3377 or see our website www. golfclubpattaya.com and

Scurrell signs off with forty at Phoenix
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, May 28, Pattana – Stableford
A confirmed game here now every three weeks until late
September and a favourite course with many of our players. We arrived as
always too early and we teed off 20 minutes ahead of schedule on the
allocated B and C courses.
Alan Pilkington, Pete Sumner
and Chris Voller at Pattana.
There were a few murmurs on the first tee that the white
tees were a trifle difficult so the consensus was to play the yellows. We
will revert back to our original white tees for our next game here.
Thirty eight points was the best score of the day, coming
from Alan Pilkington who topped the podium in division 1, beating arch rival
Pete Sumner on a 21/19 back nine count back. Chris Voller with 37 points
finished third.
Kari Aarnio won division 2 with 33 points, beating Ian
Hart on a 16/15 back nine count back and back from Austria, Pepo Frich was
third on 31.
Chris Voller birdied the 7th on the B course to secure
the only ‘2’ in division 1 while there were three rollovers in division 2
from Crystal Bay, Green Valley and Greenwood, plus today’s game, and in his
last game with us before his return to Manila, Rod Howett’s son Tony birdied
the 2nd on the C course and Kari Aarnio did likewise as they shared the pot.
Near pins went to Al Keith (2), Chris Voller (2), Kari
Aarnio, Rod Howett, Terry Redding and Burnie Sinclair.
Wednesday, May 30, Phoenix - Stableford
The Ocean course has now been shut for nine weeks owing
to a new greenkeeper here trying to improve each nine over the next few
months, so we were playing the Lakes and Mountain nines again today.
It was a pleasant day with quite a few clouds around and
a possibility of rain later. We had six four-balls out and the course was
almost deserted as we teed off. The greens have improved since we were here
three weeks ago and all the lads were impressed.
Playing off 12 now after a two shot reduction over the
past two months, Neville Scurrell won with 40 points, beating Kari Kuparinen
(now off 5) on a 20/19 back nine count back. Chris Voller was third with 38.
Pepo Frich topped division 2 with 38 points, while Ian
Plummer was second after beating Sid Ottaway on a 19/16 back nine count
back, both coming in with 36 points.
Near pins were claimed by Andy Baber, Alan Pilkington,
Neville Scurrell, Pete Sumner, Sid Ottaway, Terry Redding and Bryan Rought.
There were no ‘2’s in division 1 so a rollover to Green
Valley on the 11th and Terry Redding birdied the 8th on the Mountain course
for the only ‘2’ in division 2 today.
Friday, June 1,Eastern Star - Stableford
Another six groups out today and the first group, a
three-ball, teed off at nine o’clock on the dot and returned to the
clubhouse bang on midday. There was nobody here and all the other groupings
enjoyed a perfect round. It was coolish here for the front nine but at the
turn it soon warmed up.
Toi was not playing today so Darryl Blair was out with
the lads and won division 1 with 37 points. Frank Kelly was second one point
behind and Bill Bertram took third, beating Mikael Andersson on an 18/17
back nine count back after they both came in with 33 points.
After 21 points on the front nine and three months in the
doldrums, the organiser returned a score of 35 to win division 2, Ian
Plummer was second on 34 and Pepo Frich was in third with 33.
Near pins went to Frank Kelly, Jon Lay, Pete Sumner,
Chris Voller and Brian Blackford.
Only one person today on the green on all par threes in
division 2 for nearest the pin - a welcome return to Brian Blackford.
Frank Kelly birdied the 13th for the only two in division
1 today, while a rollover ensues to Eastern Star on Monday in division 2.
Another few faces disappeared this week; Frank Kelly is
back to Ireland for 3 months, Neville Scurrell has taken his beloved Ya Ya
on a month trip to Europe visiting Antwerp, Paris and Vienna and Terry
Redding has taken Albert back to Oz for a month before his return to Chang
Mai in four weeks to see his lovely caddy Air.
Our thoughts here from all of us at Jomtien Golf are with Kari Aarnio who
returned to Finland this past week. We hope to see you and Gai back soon.

Bo on top at the Hill
PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Blackburn
Tuesday, May 29, Treasure Hill – Stableford
We decided to take advantage of the Treasure Hill Sports
Day price and play on Tuesday instead of Monday this week and ended up with
our smallest field for quite a while as just eleven golfers were on the
starting sheet. We welcomed back Stu Rifkin after his couple of weeks in
Australia and newcomer Tony Turnbull from Dallas, Texas.
The Admiral, left, and Bo
Cardwell.
Leaving the Kronny right on time at 0815 hrs we managed
to catch most of the red lights on 331 which accounted for the slower than
normal journey of 53 minutes. Sports Day or not the course was deserted and
we were able to tee off at our leisure. Our first group, a three ball got
away 30 minutes ahead of schedule at 0930 hrs and in overcast conditions
proceeded at a cracking pace and finished the front nine in one hour & forty
seven minutes.
There was a fairly strong breeze which was making things
a bit tricky but the ever improving course was in great nick with tip top
greens although I personally found them a touch slower than normal. It was
millionaire’s golf and even with a drink stop on the back nine we were able
to complete our full round in three hours and forty minutes.
Most of the field were finding the going a bit tough as
is reflected in the scoring with just one golfer playing to their handicap.
At 500 baht Green Fee this course is excellent value on a Sports Day and
will certainly be regularly on our future schedules.
With the small field there was just the one flight with 5
place-getters.
In first place was Bo Cardwell with 36 points, one point
ahead of Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek in second place. With 2 golfers on
33 points a count back was necessary with returnee Stu Rifkin (20 point back
nine) taking third spot from Mike Winfield (19 point back nine) in fourth
place. Another count back was necessary to determine fifth place with
newcomer Tony Turnbull (19 point back nine) just shading Mike Gosden (18
point back nine), both having 32 points.
1st Bo Cardwell (27) 36pts
2nd Ken Bernek (16) 35pts
3rd Stu Rifkin (16) 33pts
4th Mike Winfield (20) 32pts
5th Tony Turnbull (20) 32pts
The Admiral very nearly went from chocolates to boiled
lollies after his 42 points the previous Thursday but he was saved by Dick
Braimbridge who won the Compass Cap (awarded for worst score on the day) in
fine style. Deefa the Dog was present and paraded by Hunter & collected
several donations to charity from the generous Kronny crew.
Thursday, May 31, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
As usual we were all looking forward to our monthly visit
to Royal Lakeside Golf Club despite the longer than normal road trip and we
had fifteen golfers on the day’s starting sheet. We were happy to welcome
back Jerry Dobbs & Daryl Evans from Queensland, Australia and also three
handicapper Russell Goldsworthy from my old Golf Club Gosnells in Perth,
Western Australia.
Mike Gosden.
Departing Caf้ Kronborg three minutes ahead of schedule
at 0812 hrs we “flew” along No. 7 and arrived at the course in the record
time of 56 minutes. Once more we found the course practically deserted as
now is the norm in this low, low season and we were able to send our first
group, a three ball away 30 minutes ahead of schedule at 0930 hrs.
Teeing off on the par five 1st into a fairly stiff breeze
there were none of us able to reach the green in regulation but it was
apparent that the golf course was in super condition and the greens were
splendidly presented. The weather was great also and the breeze was cooling
things down a little making it perfect conditions for playing golf.
We had “Mama” Bo Cardwell in our group and it was obvious
that she was continuing her good form of two days earlier and it seems that
the golf lessons that she is taking are certainly doing the trick for her.
We continued at a very good pace and with a 10 minute drink stop were able
to complete the round in four hours & ten minutes.
We had 2 flights on the day with A Flight for handicaps
of 0 to 18 and B Flight for 19 and over.
For the third Thursday in a row it was Aussie Michael
Bruce Gosden who took out the A Flight with a steady 36 points, 1 point
ahead of Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek in second place and your writer was
third with 34 points. Bo Cardwell blitzed the field with a terrific 41
points while winning B Flight, a massive 8 points ahead of returnee Jerry
Dobbs who finished second. Another returnee, Daryl Evans had 32 points and
finished in third place.
A Flight
1st Mike Gosden (11) 36pts
2nd Ken Bernek (16) 35pts
3rd Peter Blackburn (12) 34pts
B Flight
1st Bo Cardwell (27) 41pts
2nd Jerry Dobbs (22) 33pts
3rd Daryl Evans (23) 32pts
Dick Braimbridge managed to repeat his performance of two days earlier
and won the Compass Cap (awarded for the worst score of the day) and Hunter
paraded Deefa the Dog who once more collected many donations to charity from
the generous Kronny Crew.

In-form Parker takes monthly honours
Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday, May 28,The Emerald
– Stableford
An overcast and cloudy day greeted us at Emerald, but the
course was exceptionally quiet and we were able to tee off early. We had the
(unlucky) number of 13 golfers today, so the first three groups were
three-balls, but the empty course meant that they flew round, leaving more
time than usual for apres-golf refreshments in nearby Bang Chang.
Golfer of the Month for May,
Geoff Parker.
There was a brief five minute shower of rain during the
opening holes, but other than that, the weather remained dry and relatively
cool. The course was in reasonably good shape, although the greens were
bumpy and a little slow.
Geoff Parker continued his recent run of consistent form,
to win the honours on the day, and cement his position as leader in the
golfer of the month contest. PJ rediscovered some form after a barren spell,
to take third place behind John Graham.
1st Geoff Parker (14) 33pts
2nd John Graham (10) 32pts
3rd P.J. Redmond (24) 31pts
Near Pins: John Graham, Geoff Parker, and Lee
Butler(2).
Wednesday, May 30, Plutaluang W & N – Stableford
We elected to play the more difficult combination of
courses, and were pleasantly surprised by the much improved condition of the
fairways and greens (which are normally slow, but today were true and fast).
The outward nine progressed without incident, but true to form, we were
confronted by groups of 6-balls waiting on the 10th
tee, so the inward nine was considerably slower.
Geoff Parker managed to keep his game together despite
the slow pace of play, and captured his second win of the week, securing the
Golfer of the Month title in the process. Geoff’s score of 37 points will
surely produce a further cut in his handicap, opening up the field for next
month’s title.
Sean Murphy, playing his first game back, secured the
runners up spot ahead of Colin Greig, who was playing his final game before
a much delayed return to the U.K.
1st Geoff Parker (14) 37pts
2nd Sean Murphy (15) 35pts
3rd Colin Greig (7) 33pts
Near Pins: Geoff Cox, Sean Murphy, and Tore
Eliason(2).
Friday, June 1, Khaow Keow A & B – Stableford
We arrived at Khaow Keow to find the course deserted and
were able to tee-off considerably earlier than our allotted tee time. There
was a brief 10 minute shower of rain on the opening holes, but then the
weather brightened and the round was completed in double quick time by the
first two groups. The third group fell two holes behind on the front nine
and found a Thai five-ball had inserted themselves in front of them on the
10th tee – som nam naa for slow play!
The condition of the course was not up to the normal high
standard and several greens showed signs of severe damage. Alan Sullivan,
making one of his rare appearances these days with the Bunker Boys, took the
honours on the day with an excellent score of 37 points.
1st Alan Sullivan (13) 37pts
2nd Roger Touny (9) 32pts
3rd John Graham (10) 30pts
Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Ken Young and Tore Eliassen.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf
society who now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya
3rd Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per
week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and
a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast and
transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are always welcome. For
more information call Dave on 087 146 9978, email dave.

Soi Dogs bite back to level Sunday Softball series
Pattaya Sports Club Sunday Softball
Soi Dog MVP Greg smashed a walk-off homerun in the last
inning of the fourth and final game of the softball series on Sunday, June
3, giving his team a 12-10 win. The final dinger was a fitting ending to a
day of softball where it seemed to be raining long balls all day at Pattaya
Sports Club Softball Sunday.
Rick Harris hits a pitch by
John Stockton for a homerun in game 3 of the 4 game Derby. His team, the Soi
Dogs won the game by a score of 13-3.
The day was a tale of two halves, as Sunrise Tacos led by
infielder Ricky Z., outfielders Davey D., and pitcher John Stockton all had
all the hot bats early. The Tacos tamed the Soi Dogs in the first two games
of the series, winning 14-8 and 13-3 respectively. Stockton hit 2 dingers on
the day, but it was the Soi Dogs whose bats finally figured out how to hit
their balls over the fence, allowing them to stage a proper comeback.
In game 3 and 4 the Soi Dogs showcased homeruns from
Greg, Rick H, an inside the parker by Andy E., and 3 from their
centerfielder Diego. The Soi Dogs were able to win the final 2 encounters
15-0, and 12-10, evening the 4 game series against the previous week’s
winners Sunrise Tacos.
It was a great Sunday of softball, at the new and
improved battle grounds, the Thai Polo Club for everyone involved. We are
still looking for a few more players to join us each Sunday from noon to
four, and no experience is necessary. Contact the Pattaya Sports Club, or
email John (scrabbleking @yahoo.com) or myself (igolfwells@gmail .com) to
find out how you can become a Pattaya softballer. See you on the diamond!

United suffer back to back defeats - drop to twelfth
Thai Premier League Season 2012
Pattaya United’s Adisak

the Chonburi Municipal Stadium, Wednesday, May 30. (Photo/Pattaya United)
Pattaya United will want to forget last week in a hurry
after being on the wrong end of Premier League defeats to both Chonburi FC
and league leaders Muang Thong United.
First up was an away trip to local rivals Chonburi Sharks
on the evening of May 30. The game remained goalless at half time with
United close to opening the scoring through a fine strike from Obatola that
was tipped away spectacularly by the Sharks’ keeper Sinthaweechai, while at
the other end Chonburi’s Panuwat headed straight at Narit when a left wing
cross found him in acres of space.
The breakthrough came for the hosts in the 64th
minute when Pipob On-mo connected with a flashing header to give Chonburi
the lead and this soon became 2-0 when Chaiman converted from the penalty
spot after United’s Duangpimy was harshly judged to have fouled Samana in
the area.
United managed to pull a goal back in the last minute of
injury time through Aphisit Kamwang but it was too little too late to
salvage anything from the game.
The Dolphins faced an even sterner test last Sunday as
they took on unbeaten league leaders Muang Thong at a packed Nongprue
Stadium in Pattaya. The visitors scored the only goal of the game in the
first half when their Macedonian midfielder Mario Djurovski cheekily lifted
the ball over the Pattaya wall in the 39th minute to
give the Kirins the lead.
Pattaya laid siege to the Muang Thong goal for long
periods of the second half but were unable to find a way through. The
closest the Dolphins came to leveling was a pile-driver free kick from club
captain Niweat Siriwong that rebounded to safety off the visitors’ cross
bar.
In the dying moments of the match, Djurovski had a golden
opportunity to seal the points for Muang Thong but he saw his chip over
Narit also come back off the woodwork. It hardly mattered however as the
referee’s whistle blew soon after for full time.
Pattaya United’s next fixture is a Toyota Cup match on
Saturday, June 9 away at Prachuap FC while the Dolphins return to league
action on June 13 with a daunting trip to Buriram to take on the defending
champions.

Thailand to take on Russia at charity boxing event
Thai and Russian Muaythai
fighters pose for photos at a press conference held May 25 to announce the
charity boxing event.
Manoon Makpol
Russian Muaythai boxers will face off against their Thai
counterparts in a charity boxing competition being staged to raise funds for
the victims of last year’s devastating floods.
The contest will be held on June 24 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
at Pattaya Boxing World, a new state of the art boxing venue located next to
Mini Siam in north Pattaya.
Ooros Saengthong, the CEO of Pattaya Boxing World, said
at a recent press conference, “I am delighted to be a part of this fund
raising opportunity to help victims of the flood and also importantly to

Garden International raises
sports funds for Fobissea Games
Choawanee Panpruk, Social
Enterprise Manager from sponsors PTTCG, gave 300 water bottles to Miss Lucy
for GIS students to use at the Games.
Mark Beales
A mammoth fundraising effort has helped support an
international sports event for students near Pattaya.
Swimming, goalkeeping, a sporting multi day and a raffle
have all helped raise funds for the Group C Fobissea Primary Games, which
are being held from June 5-9 at Garden International School Rayong. This
mini-Olympics will see students from Nepal, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand
compete.
A sponsored swim event was organized in GIS on May 16
from 3.30pm to 4.30pm to raise money for Fobissea. A total of 27 children
took part, who all collected sponsorship money. The most number of lengths
was done by a Year 6 student, Sang Hyun, who managed an incredible 131
lengths!
It was a big success and all the money collected will go
to Fobissea funds. Money raised will help cover the costs of GIS students
who will representing the school at the games.
Recently there was also a fun-filled “Beat the Keeper”
competition in secondary. Held over five lunchtimes, students paid 20B for
the chance to take a penalty against our team of all-star goalkeepers.
Mr Beales, Mr Elderkamp, Miss Morris, Mr Ball, Mr Baker
and Miss Austin were the keepers who tried valiantly to save all the
penalties.
More fundraising came in the form of a raffle, which
raised thousands of baht.
MBf Taylors generously agreed to sponsor the swimming
kits and hats. We are also very grateful to the other sponsors: Fairway
Thailand, PTT Global Chemical, SCI, Crathco, Advance Media, Lawton Asia,
Elite Printer, Hydro-Tech, Union Sime Derby, Thunder Cranes (L) Ltd. and
Ruampat Rayong Hospital and Frank & Su Nichols and Barry Soanes.
