Beasts of burden thunder towards the finish
line at last year’s buffalo races at Lake Mabprachan.

Traditional buffalo racing returns to Pattaya Aug. 17 for
another year with beasts of burden of all ages and sizes putting on a
show at Lake Mabprachan.
The race and buffalo “beauty pageant” starts at 8 a.m. at the reservoir,
in front of Khao Potthong.
Races were broken into five age-based categories: super junior, special
junior, small junior, big junior and big. Each race had two stages with
prizes ranging from 1,000-5,000 baht.
The races are organized annually to preserve and restore the ancient
traditional buffalo racing sport. It generally includes cheerleader
dancing, tug of war games and other attractions, including horse races.
