Thailand’s top longboat racers will compete for cash and prizes at the
14th Pattaya Traditional Longboat Tournament this weekend at Mabprachan
Reservoir.
Pattaya and Nongprue officials announced plans for the Nov. 22-23 races Nov. 10.
They’ll feature long-boats with deep roots in Thai culture. Pong and Nongprue
sub-districts, the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, Royal Thai Navy, and
Thailand Rowing and Canoeing Association will support the race.
Trophies will be awarded in six categories: Large boats (55 paddlers), longboats
(30 paddlers), large boats types A and B, small boats type B and international
boats (12 paddlers). Nearly 400,000 baht in prizes will be awarded with the top
prize totaling 100,000 baht.
Nongprue Mayor Mai Chaiyanit said the race, which has been held at the venue
since 2000, also will features other events, such as Thai Long Drum contest,
buffalo races, a pig-catching competition, enduro motorcycle racing, and much
more.
