Peter Hill wins close Diana Gold 2001

Children true winners of the charity golf tournament

Peter Hill carded a net 68 to win the Diana Gold 2001 charity golf tournament, organized by the Diana Group and sponsored by Chivas Regal, held at Eastern Star on Friday, November 16. Peter barely edged out, on count back, Im Woodruffe and Peter Renggli, who both also carded 68s.

However, the true winners of this annual charity golf tournament were the children, as all the proceeds from the event went to further children’s education in local schools and to help support a very worthy cause, the Chonburi Juvenile and Family Court Observation and Protection Center. The latter cares for boys and girls who have been through the court, mainly on drug related charges, and often not their fault to find themselves caught up in a remand situation.

Peter Hill (left) receives the championship trophy from Chief Judge Prathinya Sutsoowan.

Banglamung Schools received B.30,000 for 20 scholarships, and the Chonburi Juvenile and Family Court Observation and Protection Center received a cheque for B. 125,000. Sanan Phawandee, director of Banglamung Schools, accompanied by 20 students, and Chief Judge Prathinya Sutsoowan received the cheques.

It could also be argued that all the golfers who participated were winners, as nearly every one of the 153 who played in the tournament took home a prize. A total of 36 one-baht gold chains, totaling a current market value of over B.200,000, were awarded as technical prizes, one on each hole for both the morning and afternoon starts. In all, 34 companies and individuals sponsored technical hole prizes.

Each golfer also received a lucky draw ticket at registration which qualified for a large number of prizes back at the post tournament party held at the beautiful Diana Group Garden Lodge and Golf Driving Range, hosted by the lovely and charming Sophin Tappajug and the Diana Group. Sophin Tappajug (Kuhn Noi), who, in addition to being the chief executive officer of the Diana Group, is an associate judge at the Chonburi Juvenile and Family Court. The large number of prizes included return flights to Koh Samui, more gold, hotel and restaurant vouchers including two nights at the new Hard Rock Hotel, an all-inclusive holiday for four at Eastern Star Resort, and much more.

Aree Arp, a fine lady golfer and wife of Fabian Arp of Thai-Ger Line Golf, added excitement during the morning round of the tournament when she shot a hole-in-one on #12. The shot earned her the gold technical prize, plus B.10,000 from hole sponsor Aura Water and a one-year membership at Eastern Star Resort.

Division winners on the day were: Im Woodruffe won the Ladies Division with a net 68, Chris John won Division III with a net 69, Peter Renggli won Division II with a net 68, K. Chulkwan won Division I with a net 69, and Darren Ottaway shot the low gross round, a scratch 73. The winning scores being relatively close to par was testament to the condition of the course, as although the general condition of the course was fairly good, the poor condition of the greens gave golfers a test. Indeed, three of the longest putt technical prizes went unclaimed. No doubt the top-notch management and staff at Eastern Star will have the situation remedied soon.

The people whose hard work made this tournament such a success were: Mike Franklin, John Cole, Khun Wittoon, Khun Komsan, Khun Tanya, Wayne Ogonoski, Richard Livingston, Khun Jirawat, Khun Tum, Khun Sririla and the reception staff at Eastern Star, Tom Cole and Bill Hurd for the golf course and high standard of service at Eastern Star, and Khun Nok and the Diana Group staff for registration, and the Charity Hole #8 (sponsored by Chivas Regal, which took in 7,300 baht to be put towards the charity total).

House of the Golden Coin closes the gap

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling

With Captain Mio knocking down 543 pins and Porn’s 501 series, the House of the Golden Coin took three points from Shakey Pete’s and moved to within one point of the first place Winchester Club.

Ooy and Sven both rolled strings of 200 or over

Winchester Club managed to win only one point from the Sultans of Swing by taking the third game behind Sven’s 210 game. Dang led the Sultan team with a 511 series.

Cafe Ole moved into third place after taking all four points from Cafe Kronborg. Somrak rolled a 521 series and Ow had a 531 series which was more than enough to overcome Gerhart’s 511 series, the best bowler of the day for Kronborg.

VFW Post 9876 moved into fourth place by taking three points from Three Sisters. Ooy led the VFW team with a 201 game, 506 series, followed by Nun with a 504 pin count. Udom led the Three Sisters with a 502 series.

Kran and Jeed battle for top spot

Tuesday Bowling League

After 10 weeks, all teams have now played each other twice in the PSC Tuesday Bowling League. In some very hard fought matches, Kran’s team again went in front of Jeed’s, after beating Team Otto 3-1. Mio’s team beat Jeed’s by the same score. Somrak’s team also won 3-1 against Nual’s struggling team.

There were not quite as many high scores this week, but Mio again had games of 209 & 202, Udom with 207 and Gert with 214.

The usual high scorers like Kran, Tue and Somrak could not find the form this week, Nual playing with a taped up wrist also had an off day.

Shenanigans Superstars come 2nd in world pool competition!

The Pattaya round of the World Friendly Pool Championship was held at Tim Bar on Second Road last weekend. With the newly formed and somewhat inexperienced Shenanigans team led by the Pattaya Mail’s Dr. Iain, with Paul Dobbs, Jeremy Coles, Wanchai, Kim Fletcher and a girl dragged off the dance floor called Pin, the six players used all of their collective skills on the green baize tables to score a resounding second place in the championship during a nail biting three hour tournament, being narrowly defeated by 6 frames to 1. The winning team which admitted to using any tactics came from Foster Wheeler. Those wishing to join in can contact Kim Fletcher at Shenanigans, or Dr. Iain, generally seen everywhere.

Fitness Tips: Weightlifting techniques under the microscope

by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club

Part 6 - Triceps

G’day Readers, today we’ll be moving into an area that a lot of people would class as combat, the fight against flabby arm disease. The Triceps Brachii is the muscle in the back of the upper portion of your arm and its function, simply put, is to extend the elbow. This muscle assists in a massive amount of day-to-day functional movements and thus deserves a bit of attention for training. Before we go any further, same story as previously, seek medical advice before commencing any physical activity. As always, the core of the body should be braced, yep, hold all those ab muscles hard in the one position to give you a stable base.

Triceps press (pictured)

The press action for triceps is performed with the hand placement narrower than that for bench press. The bar is held in a shoulder width grip. Care is taken to avoid hyperextension of the wrist as mentioned in the bench press section I did a few weeks ago, i.e. rest the weight on the base of your palm so you don’t put too much pressure on the back of your wrist. To maximise the triceps activation during the press, the elbows should be kept by the sides of the body. This is best illustrated in the incorrect photograph; with elbows out you are getting more effort out of your chest. The bar is lowered in an arcing movement until the elbows reach the level of bench and the bar is directly above the navel. Similar to the bench press, in the up position, ensure that the elbows are slightly bent. This will stop all the synovial fluid being squeezed out of the joint allowing the bones to grate upon each other. This rule applies to all elbow extension exercises, you might not think it’s important now but 10-20 years down the track and you’ve not had any training related over use injuries, you’ll love me.

Dips

The dip is by far and away the best exercise for working the triceps and as good as it is, it’s also one of the worst performed exercise in any gym. The dip I’m going to address is one that can be done anywhere, in a gym on a bench, at home off a chair, in a park off a tree branch, in a pool off a step; you get the idea. Basically you need a place to put your hands so they are slightly elevated above the ground and the feet are on the ground. When executing the dip, the buttocks are kept close to the bench to avoid hyperextension at the shoulder; this brings up the biggest issue, shoulders should NEVER MOVE when you are performing the dip. Your shoulders stay locked down and back, in place, and only the elbow moves. The chest is elevated with the elbows pointed to the rear of the bench, i.e., point your elbows straight back behind you. Stop when your arm is bent at the elbow approximately 90 degrees. Your fingers should point straight forwards; again a common mistake is to have them going to the back. Let’s not go down the road of internal shoulder problems, just point the fingers forward to avoid that whole mess.

Kickbacks

Care must be taken with kickbacks to again not overextend the shoulder - this is prevented by inclining the trunk forwards. Kickbacks are therefore performed in kneeling or while resting the opposite elbow on one knee. The elbow is extended with maximum resistance achieved when the forearm is horizontal. Big temptation here to lock the elbow, please control that. Also, while the kick back is a common exercise, I do have a problem with it. In this position the triceps only move the weight up against gravity for 50% of the range of motion, the last 50%. However, the first 50% is the biceps stopping the weight falling to the floor. No matter what people tell you a kick back is not a truly effective exercise for the triceps, get into dips and presses instead. If you are looking for variety, bear with me for another couple of weeks, I’ll be discussing elements of variation after we have a go at the biceps and the abdominal group. Until then,

Carpe’ Diem

Pattaya’s 1 st international indoor dinner and boxing gala night

The Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa is the somewhat unlikely venue for a “Night at the Fights” next Friday, November 30. Organised by Pattaya’s own Belgian boxer, Patrick van der Bergh, and his “Boxing Promotion Team”, this is a charity boxing event, with the principal recipient of the charity funds raised being the Camillian AIDS Centre at Rayong, run by Fr. Giovanni.

The ring has been set up in the Marriott with dinner tables surrounding it, as it is intended to be a wine, dine and boxing gala evening. Commencing at 7.30 p.m. there will be a presentation of the boxers, with the first fight being Muay Thai (kick boxing) 5 x 3 minutes rounds. This will be followed by an Elvis Show put on by our own Ritchie Newton and then a 6 x 2 minute rounds amateur boxing match.

The entertainment will continue with a performance from the Alcazar “lady boxers” then another 5 round Muay Thai international bout, with a Slovakian fighter up against a local Thai exponent. This is followed by a ladies fight over 4 x 2 minute rounds, and they slug it out as well as any man.

The final fight will be between Patrick the Belgian and Yodium Look Nakhlua over 4 x 3 minute rounds. Patrick has been training hard for this bout and is supremely confident at this stage (we’ll see what he’s like at the end of 4 x 3 minutes!).

Dinner, shows and the boxing matches are B. 1000 for VIP seating, or economy seating with no dinner for B. 700. Remember it is for charity. Reservations can be made with Patrick on 01 687 2410 or email [email protected], or Fini at 01 887 4891 or email [email protected]

Stan Breezes in at windy Great Lakes

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker

On Tuesday, 13th November, the Bunker Boys went to a very windy Great Lakes course for their weekly medal competition. The tone was set for the day when the Bunker’s web guru, Len Jones, watched by his fellow competitors, strode purposefully on to the first tee, placed his ball and took an “airshot”! An ominous prelude to his three-over par round and the certainty of the Bunker Banana Booby!

Others fared better and in division one the Kansas Whirlwind, Stan Axon, conquered the conditions to return a score of net 68 to take first prize. Behind him three players tied for second place with 73, Wilf Latham, George Meigh and Ian Phillips.

In division two Chris John headed the field with a net 71 followed closely by Les Winch on net 73 and “Sunny” Sander Ruthsip on 74. Nearest-the-pin awards went to Tony “Dr. Pinky” Callen, Wilf Latham, Ian Phillips and Chris John.

Dickie tastes victory at Siam

On Friday, 16th November, the Bunker Boys travelled to local Siam C.C. for their weekly Stableford competition. A fresh wind and a cool day contributed to some good scores with Wilf Latham and Kevin Wilson tying for second place with 38 points each. This was a particularly fine performance by Kevin as he has just returned to Pattaya after a golf-free six months. Well done the Bunker “Friday Man”!

The deserving winner was the ever accurate Dickie Barbe who played very steadily to amass a splendid 39 points. He rarely plays a wayward shot and at Siam this is the recipe for success.

Nearest-the-pin awards went to Len Jones, George Meigh, Bill Jones and for the first time ever at the Bunker, Big Ron Millward. Congratulations to all.

Steve can brag for a week

Three Sisters Golf

On Monday, the bragging rights went to none other than the Pattaya Golf Club’s chairman, Steve Donovan. Paul Craft asked, who checks the chairman’s handicap after the chairman figures the handicaps?

Illustrious chairman Steve Donovan took the bragging rights with 39 points.

Steve struggled and limped his way past the rest of the field, keeping his drives on the fairway and sinking crucial putts. It was a pretty good turnout so Steve did well to win. With the course drying out the ball was running better for most of the golfers. Bob Deane and Herb Ishinaga tied for second at 38 points as Steve moved into 1st place with 39 points.

Holding up the bottom this week was another limper, Kenny Mau. With his hip hurting, Kenny just could not keep up with the rest of the field and was left holding the bag with 26 points. Although Kenny went to see a Chiropractor it did not help his condition or his game. Hope it gets better by next week.

The Snowman is no more

IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven

Monday 12th November - Phoenix (Stroke Play)

1st: Malcolm Clare, 65
2nd: Lamud Lindborg, 66
3rd: Danny Greer, 70
4th: Bob Lindborg, 71

2nd: Bob Van Mol, 68
3rd: Peter Christianssen, 70 (cb9 32)
4th: Jeff McLaury, 70 (cb9 36)

A large contingent of TAGGS golfers necessitated the formation of two divisions at this always-popular course. In the second division, Malcolm Clare led home the field for the first time in the week and in so doing recorded a personal best round of 90 off his 25 handicap.

Back at the Haven, Richard Livingston the resident PGA Professional, welcomed new members Al Rolnik, Gordon Langtry and Phil Groves, whilst welcoming back Dave Spendley, Peder Gjelstrub, Peter Christianssen, Chris John, Danny Greer and David Dines.

Wednesday 14th November - Khao Kheow (Stableford)

1st: Gordon Langtry, 34
2nd: B.J. Smith, 33 (cb9 18)

4th: Alisa Khongnok, 31 (cb9 16)
5th: Lamud Lindborg, 31 (cb9 13)

New member Gordon Langtry prevailed over a very tough course made even more difficult by the wind, which sometimes blew at around 30 mph. B.J. Smith was a very creditable second, just edging out the steady David Dines on count back. On her maiden trip with the Haven, new lady member Alisa Khongnok also just pipped Lamud Lindborg for the final place on the podium.

At the prize giving, Richard welcomed new members Von Mitchell, Drew Hoppe, and Alisa Khongnok, whilst welcoming back Wally Blackbrow, Rod Nabbe and Dale Drader.

Friday 16th November - Burapha (Stableford)

1st: Malcolm Clare, 45
2nd: Brian Kelly, 44
3rd: B.J. Smith, 42 (cb9 23)
4th: Mark Gorda, 42 (cb9 20)
5th: Moe Bertrand, 41

It was a day of records by the TAGGS members at the beautiful, private, Burapha course set in the hills overlooking Laem Chabang. Malcolm again showed the value of private tuition and constant practice, by recording his best round for the second time in the week, shooting a gross 88. Malcolm used to be known as the Snowman, due to the number of eights recorded on his scorecards, but now with a double eight (88), surely this has gone forever.

Brian Kelly also made his best ever score of 84 and B.J. Smith with a personal best of 94 closely followed him. Mark Gorda, whose 42 points would have taken the honours on almost any other day, was left wondering what he has to do to win. The chairman’s suggestion: spend more time at the driving range and less at the shooting range.

Prior to the prize giving, Richard welcomed back Moe Deverdenne. Mark Campbell, Malcolm Clare, Dave Spendley, Mark Gorda and “The Doc” shared the twos.

Good turnout for Green Valley Stableford

P.S.C. Golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Thirty people went to the beautiful Green Valley course for a Stableford match on Thursday November 15. A big wind was blowing, making the conditions lovely and cool. The course had dried out nicely after the recent rains.

The bold KSM (Kronborg Sergeant Major) wasn’t able to grace the course with his presence, having just returned from a 4 day break at Hua Hin, so the Admiral was left to hold the fort for the old military men.

2 flights were played: 0 to 15 and 16 and above. Results were: A Flight was won by Dave Dines with 36 points (which included an Eagle on one of the par 4’s). Next was the effervescent Svend Berthelson with 35 points and 3rd place was taken by Greg Pommerenk.

B flight winner was Werner Stub with 33 points, 2nd was Jim Marshall on 31 and 3rd place went to young Frank Sinclair on 30 points.

Near pins were: #2 Dave Richardson, #9 and #12 David Dines, and 16 Phillipe Berra.

Hurd and Horsting high flyers in Shenanigans Pairs Better Ball

Bill Hurd and new member Paul Horsting got off to a flying start in the Pairs Better Ball on Tuesday November 13th at Eastern Star, and made a sure landing with an impressive 45 Stableford points.

Scores were generally good and the runner-up spot was closely contested between Bob Lindborg partnering with Lamud Chaidara, and Beth Lill with Nora Horgsjordet, both pairs returning 45 Stableford points. Bob and Lamud just had the edge by one point on count-back with 22 points on the back nine, while Beth and Nora had 21.

It was fine dry day and ideal for golf. Near pins were claimed by Tony Stevens, Bill Hurd, Mam (rarely out of the prizes) Trayling and Steve Ryser. Respectable long putts were sunk by Philippe Berra and a clearly on form Bill Hurd.

Next outing is on Tuesday November 27th for an exciting Four Clubs Pairs Scramble. This format requires a lot of careful strategic thought as to what to put in the bag, and whose bag to put it in!

Sign-up in pairs please, at Shenanigans.

Herb Schweiterman wins trip bragging rights

Kronborg/PSC Golf Trip To Hua Hin

On Sunday 11 November at 0700 hrs, six brave souls, led by old sea dog Dave Richardson, set sail by minibus from the Kronborg for 4 days of golf and three nights at Hua Hin. It was decided to have a Stableford competition each day for ‘bragging’ rights and an overall champion.

Day one saw the golf stop on the way at Dragon Hills. The course was quiet and in excellent condition, and enjoyed by all. Winner was Leif Linner with 36 pts, closely followed by Herb Schweiterman & Derek Brook on 35pts.

Day two fortunately had a late departure from the City Beach Hotel, as old acquaintances had been renewed the night before at Bernie’s Inn. The course played was ‘Bangkok Golf Milford’, definitely the ‘least good’ golf course and club house. Enough said. The winner was Dave on 33 points.

Day three joined with Hua Hin Golf Society to play their competition at ‘Majestic Creek’, with 56 competitors. It was an excellent day on an excellent course, and P.S.C. golfers acquitted themselves well. In ‘A Flight’ (0 to 20), played on stroke play, Derek lost 4th place on count back with a net 72, whilst in B Flight (Stableford) Herb won with 39 pts and Renito played well to amass 36 pts.

Day four saw an early start for the return, and a decision made at Bernie’s the night before to stop at ‘Royal Ratchaburi’ on the trip back proved to be an excellent decision. Value for money, the vote was this course would take some beating. An enjoyable & relaxed last round saw Dave win with 36 pts, closely followed by Herb & Derek on 35 pts.

All voted the trip a success. The overall ‘bragging’ champ was Herb, but by only by 1 pt from Dave & Derek. Perhaps the prime memory for all who went on the trip was the Nipponese ‘cry & dance’ on all shots, as Koji smashed his ball somewhere! Next time you see the trip advertised, put your name down, fast.

Shenanigans’ 2nd ‘Ladies International Open’ Golf Tournament next week

The second ‘Shenanigans International Ladies Open’ Golf Tournament is just a week away and full details are published in this issue of Pattaya Mail.

“It is an ‘open’ tournament with no requirement to belong to any group, club or society. A recognized handicap will be required, but we will also accommodate non-handicapped players who will play in a special division. We are pleased to welcome back Kitty Storr and OK Ladies Golf Fashions as a sponsor, and welcome new sponsor ‘The Leading Hotels of the World - Golf & Spa Resorts.”

Shenanigans landlord, Kim Fletcher, guarantees that the ladies will be very well looked after on the course and will be able to enjoy the warm hospitality and Thai/Western buffet at the prize giving ceremony and lucky draw back at Shenanigans, Pattaya, to round off the day.

Be sure to sign-up early for the 2nd Shenanigans Ladies International Open on Friday 30th November, at Eastern Star Resort.
