BCCT Special Eastern eaboard Dinner tonight
Privatising Poverty Reduction
The British Chamber of Commerce Thailand (BCCT)
announced they have organized a Special Eastern Seaboard Dinner on Friday
September 27 at 6.30 p.m. for a 7.00 p.m. start at the Royal Cliff Beach
Resort, Pattaya.
The BCCT is delighted to welcome guest speaker for this
Special Eastern Seaboard Dinner, Senator Mechai Viravaidhaya. Senator
Mechai is the founder and chairman of the Population and Community
Development Association (PDA), one of Thailand s largest private,
non-profit development organizations. Since 1974, PDA has initiated
community-based family planning services, community and rural development
programmes, and HIV/AIDS prevention activities throughout Thailand. The
success of Thailand’s national family planning programme resulted in one
of the most rapid fertility declines in the modern era as the rate of
annual population growth declined from 3.2% in 1974 to 1.2% in 1995, and
the average number of children per family fell from seven to two.
Senator Mechai was elected to the Thai Senate in 2000.
Previously, he served as an appointed senator, a minister to the office of
the prime minister twice, in 1991 and 1992, when he assisted Prime Minister
Anand Panyarachun in establishing a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS
prevention policy and programme. He has also served as government
spokesman, deputy minister of industry, governor of the provincial
waterworks authority, chairman of Krung Thai Bank Public Company Limited
and Telephone Organization of Thailand. He was appointed as the ambassador
for UNAIDS in 1999.
He has received numerous awards including the 1997
United Nations Population Award, the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public
Service in 1994, the Paul Hoffman Award and the United Nations Gold Peace
Medal in 1981. He has been granted decorations from the governments of
Thailand, Australia and the Federal Republic of Germany. He was a visiting
scholar at the Harvard Institute of International Development in 1988-89,
and holds several honorary doctorate degrees from Universities in Thailand
and abroad.

She’s still there - Samui Scorpion Queen goes for record
Kanchana Ketkeaw, aka Nong Na, is attempting to break the
world record for the longest stay with scorpions - 32 days - right here in
Pattaya.
Nong Na
is going for the record - right here in Pattaya - for the longest stay with
scorpions (and we aren’t talking about the German rock group, either,
although that would be a feat in itself). Go ahead and lend her your moral
support - she’s at the Royal Garden Plaza, "on display", free of
charge.
Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, in conjunction with
the Royal Garden Plaza Pattaya are joining hands to help her break and set
the New Guinness World Record.
The current Guinness World Record was recorded by
25-year-old Malaysian Scorpion Queen, Nur Malina Hassan, in 2001. She spent
30 days with 2,700 scorpions until she fell unconscious.
However, Kanchana Ketkeaw, also known as Nong Na, plans to
spend 32 days with 3,000 scorpions! She began her quest on September 21, and
from now until October 23 you can come and meet the 30-year-old challenger
from Samui Snake Farm in Surat Thani. Without any prior training, Nong Na has
been working at Samui Snake Farm as one of the scorpion performers for farm
visitors for the last 7 years.
Come and see how she fearlessly lives, eats and sleeps
with 3,000 scorpions in a special built glass cage measuring 12 square
meters, where every 8 hours she is allowed to leave the confinement for 15
minutes.
Come and render your moral support at Ripley’s Believe
It or Not Museum, 3rd floor, Royal Garden Plaza, Pattaya until October 23rd,
from 10 a.m. to midnight - free of charge.
Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum and co-organizers would like to thank
the following companies for their generous support towards this exceptional
event: Samui Snake Farm (Surat Thani), Advance Info Service Public Company
Ltd., Bangkok Interfurn Co. Ltd., Thai-Asahi Glass Public Company Ltd.,
Kawasaki Motors Enterprise (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital.
PAWS reaches 200
Richard A. Kubiak
Pattaya Animal Welfare Foundation (PAWS)
The Pattaya Animal Welfare Foundation (PAWS), a
nationally approved charity registered in Chonburi Province, completed the
sterilization process on its 200th stray animal on 7 September 2002.
PAWS began full scale operations on 10 June 2002. Stray
dogs from 5 major temples in Pattaya have completed the program.
Happiness
is being a PAWS volunteer.
The 200th animal, nicknamed "Honey" by the PAWS
volunteer staff, was one of 98 dogs picked up at Wat Chaimongkol and
transported to the PAWS site in Huai Yai for surgery, vaccination,
treatment, and recovery. Honey was a mixed breed female, born sometime in
2001, weighing 25 kilograms, with a brown coat and white chest. She was
fairly friendly with adults, and appeared to have had at least 1 litter of
puppies already. Honey’s course of treatment during her spaying and
recovery included a rabies vaccination, anesthesia, pain medication,
antibiotics, mange medicine, and application of a color-coded collar with
sequential serial number for identification.
PAWS hopes to take 1,000 stray animals through the
sterilization process during the next 12 months. Although the expense is
only B700 per dog, this amount, multiplied by 1,000, adds up. If you would
like to help the Pattaya Animal Welfare Foundation be able to continue with
its animal welfare efforts in the future, please consider a donation.
Contributions will alleviate the suffering of street and temple animals. And
they will prevent lives of misery for countless future generations of
unwanted offspring.
Honey,
the 200th stray dog rabies vaccinated, treated, sterilized, and recovered by
PAWS.
You can send or drop off a check or money order, payable
to Pattaya Animal Welfare Foundation (PAWS), and your return address to
PAWS, C/O M.A. Language and Business School, 341/27 Soi 13, Central Pattaya
Rd., Pattaya, Chonburi 20260. International donors can wire transfer
contributions to PAWS using the following information: Bank Name: Krung Thai
Bank Public Company Limited, S.W.I.F.T. Code: KRTHTHBK, Account Name:
Pattaya Animal Welfare Foundation (PAWS), Account #221-1-48143-4, Bank
Branch: Pattaya. Receipts will be provided for all donations.
PAWS is also looking for corporate sponsors to enhance its humane stray
animal population control objectives.

Korean pop band ‘Chakra’ was in town last week not

The group has toured extensively through Asia, including
three performances in China and traveling to places like Hong Kong,
Singapore, Philippines and Malaysia. But they were very truly delighted by
the warm welcome given to them when they arrived in Pattaya.
Not content with just performing on stage, they also act
in Korean soaps. When asked how they would describe their music, they
explained they’ve created a new music genre in Korea, ‘Indian Trance’
and ‘Goa Techno’, which fall into line with the name of the band. ‘Chakra’,
pertains to the ethereal energy centers of the human anatomy.
The girls, aged between 19 and 22, were each auditioned
for a place in the group. Chakra sold over 600,000 copies of in their debut
album ‘Han’.
After the conference, the band was invited on stage to
sign the Hard Rock Hotel’s ‘Star Guitar’, ably assisted by Mark
Rummery, Hard Rock Hotel executive assistant manager and the ever congenial
GM, Andrew Khoo.
After a heavy day of filming the girls performed two
singles of their album for an appreciative Hard Rock Cafe crowd.

physical therapy and treatment machine to the physical treatment unit of the
hospital. The old machine was not in working order. Dr. Salut Wongkraivet,

expressed his deep appreciation for the generous donation.

powder to schoolchildren on a monthly basis, as well as supporting many other
worthy causes.

Therapy Product Specialist promptly demonstrated the operation of the
machine.
Dr. Salut said that there are more than 10,000 patients who need physical
therapy each year and the hospital’s equipment was never adequate. He
thanked the club for the kind deed they did to society and said the machine
would enable the hospital to handle more patients in need of therapy.
A lot of mixing and chatting at this month’s Stammtisch
The German Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Table of Regulars’
recently held another get-together at the Moon River Pub, this time hosted by
Rene Pisters. The "Stammtisch" evening gives members a chance to
exchange news and talk about business, and provides a social setting where they
can mix and chat.
Dr. Paul Strunk, German director of the Thai-German Chamber
of Commerce surprised everyone by giving the shortest speech ever heard from
him. He simply declared the meeting "open" and sat down. Of course,
most of the guests didn’t wait for that announcement, since many had already
begun tapping into the now famous beer-tubes in front of them.
The buffet was rich and with a lot of different varieties of
delicacies. The new band at the Moon River Pub, "Get Set" was as hot
as the food. Six young people from Trinidad, Philippines and Malaysia spiced up
the evening with a repertoire of great music and the band’s stunning female
singers enticed the "Stammtisch" to the dance floor.
The evening ended very late for a ‘Stammtisch’ and everybody enjoyed
themselves. They were already were talking about the next event to be held in
two months.
