An awesome 7.7 million baht raised by the Jesters 11th Charity Drive

Mike Franklin
What a fabulous night it was at Jameson’s Irish Pub on Saturday September 20 for the final fund-raising event of the Jesters 11th Anniversary ‘Care for Kids’ Charity Drive year.

Woody declares the night open.
Corporate and individual sponsorship had exceeded all previous years, the Jesters Children’s Fair at Diana Garden Resort driving range was an outstanding success, so all that was left was the Jesters Party Night to round off the 2008 Jesters 11th Charity Drive in style. It was a party night for everybody, just as the Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ Charity Drive strives to cover all the needs of the underprivileged kids. The money raised at Jameson’s on Saturday September 20 closed the Charity Drive account for 2008 and, with the excellent attendance at the party and enthusiastic support for the Grand Raffle and the Auction, an impressive total of over 1 million baht was raised.
It is hard to believe that from small beginnings eleven years ago Lewis ‘Woody’ Underwood, on behalf of the hard working Jesters Care for Kids Charity Drive Committee, could announce yet another record result in this our 11th Anniversary year - a staggering 7,763,136 baht. Thus, guaranteeing another record benefit year ahead for the Kids and our beneficiaries.

The party auctioneer Bob Philp.
But what of the Jesters Party Night that preceded the announcement of the result?
The ‘Party’ really kicked off in earnest at 7.15 pm when Erik Sorensen and Robert Jonasson arrived back from Trat after yet another fourteen hour exhausting, but highly successful marathon cycle ride, with sponsorship this year totaling just under 500,000 baht. What can you say about these two amazing and dedicated athletes - they do it every year, and in total have raised over 3.2 million baht on their bicycles to date.
It was their arrival back at Jameson’s that signaled the official opening of the Jesters Party Night by Woody, which was followed soon after by star Bangkok DJ providing commentary about the agenda for the evening. Jim London, who sings for charity events like this and only discovered his voice when he was 58, was also on hand to provide his ‘Sinatra style’ entertainment. Unfortunately though, Jim was only able to get through a few songs before a technical problem cut short his performance.

Erik Sorensen and Robert Jonasson arrive back from Trat after a highly successful marathon cycle ride, raising almost 500,000 baht this year.
As a result, the Auction soon ensured featuring a multitude of sports and music memorabilia, antiques and more - far too many lots to call at the party. So, for many weeks leading up to the party, all lots were featured on the Jameson’s and Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ web sites and silent bids invited. The pre-bid items were closed leaving the remaining prime lots in the hands of the party auctioneer - the very personable and ebullient Kiwi Bob Philp. Calling the bids and closing at the right moment is a skill, and essential for an entertaining and efficiently run auction. Bob was certainly up for it and so it was on this party night. Key too was the Jesters Committee back-up team for ‘bid spotting’, displaying the lots and signing-up the successful bidder. Thanks here to the Jesters team of Debs, Linden, Karen and Ingrid; Ronny and Pete for displaying the lots, and Sunkan spotting the bidders.

The auction ran throughout the evening with occasional brief music breaks and eventually topped 690,000 baht. Pop’s Pattaya All Stars played the first set between the end of the auction and the start of the Grand Raffle draw close to midnight to energize the crowd. (The winning bids for the auction items are listed nearby).
The Grand Raffle top 9 prizes were drawn live. The overall list of prizes included Qantas Airline tickets to Australia, a Honda Click motorcycle, Jameson’s Carvery, with wine, every week for a year, Sony Bravia LCD TV, holidays to Angkor Wat and Hua Hin, top restaurant and resort vouchers, tickets to the Thai Open Tennis finals, jewelry, wine and much more. The Grand Raffle tickets are always a good buy - a donation to ‘Care for Kids’ and the chance to win a valuable prize. Muffy Kerr and Scar Taylor were characteristically persistent and kept the sales going throughout the evening, leading to a successful conclusion overall, with sales over 328,000 baht. (Grand Raffle prize-winners are listed nearby)

PMTV’s Paul Strachan, the lucky winner of Sony Bravia LCD TV.
The entire Jesters Party Night Grand Raffle & Auction, and the Children’s Fair raffle results are listed on our web sites at www.care4kids.info and www. jamesons-pattaya.com
Successful auction bidders please note the items can be paid for and picked up at Jameson’s from Manager Moo after 1 pm Monday through Saturday. Grand Raffle winners too, on production of the winning ticket stubs and/or ID.
All the Jesters Committees would like to thanks all Jameson’s staff especially Moo (Pornthip Luanoi) and Wanchai Pingate who worked so hard during the day and a very special thanks to Ron Keeley who did the magnificent jobs on Auction Items and thank you to everybody for making it’s a great night.
The Jesters Party Night TV coverage will be aired on the five PMTV networks Saturday September 27. Tune in then, and watch the Party Night unfold to its successful 11th Charity Drive record conclusion of 7.76 million baht.
It was a night for everyone and a memorable wind-down to a quite extraordinary Jesters 11th Anniversary year, with the Party Night and Children’s Fair that can only be described together, as simply awesome.

Tune in to PMTV on Saturday September 27 and watch the Party Night - the successful conclusion to the Jesters 11th Care for Kids Charity Drive.

Cross Bay Swim 2008 - Make Dreams Real

Jan Abbink
Chairman of the Cross Bay Swim Committee

The Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya proudly presents the 5th Annual Cross Bay Swim, which will be held on Sunday, 12th October 2008.
Two years ago there were only 16 swimmers and just one long 3.5 km swim, but last year marked the launch of an additional short swim of 1.1 km and a total of 59 people took part. The 2007 swim was highly successful in the ways of “Fun, Fellowship and Finances”. There were many familiar faces as well as newcomers - mostly students from The Regents School - all doing their bit by swimming for charity.
The short swim was won by Nancy Ellis and the fastest long swimmer was Nick Wilson, a tri-athlete from Pattana School in Bangkok. Regent School students and teachers made up for most of the swimmers and between them, they alone raised sponsorship of over 110,000 baht. Thanks to them and the many local sponsors the target of 500,000 baht was reached.
This year more international schools are expected to submit teams for the short swim and most likely there will be up to 100 swimmers participating.
Once again the Hard Rock Hotel will provide welcome drinks at the start of the short swim and Dusit Thani will host a buffet for the all swimmers at the finish.
Whereas all the costs of organising the event are covered, Rotary Club of Jomtien Pattaya is looking for sponsors to fund their many humanitarian projects. This year the Rotary International theme is “Make Dreams Real” and their main goal is to decrease child mortality.
What better cause could you find for a swimming event where privileged and healthy children (and young adults) are swimming to help the underprivileged children?
When you are asked to give money for charity you may rightfully ask, “How much of my money will go to the cause and how will it be spent?”
Rotary prefers to present itself as a “humanitarian” organisation and not just a “charity club”. What’s the difference? Rotarians offer their time, money and knowledge for free - the expenses of running a club are covered by members’ contribution fees. For that matter the whole Rotary International Organisation is funded by club members world-wide.
Also Rotary never just hands over the money. They research, plan and supervise each and every project, obtaining competitive estimates for work to be carried out and only upon satisfactory completion the invoices are paid.
In their humanitarian efforts Rotary also aims to provide long term solutions.
A good example is the Clean Water Projects which was the main cause for the funds raised at last year’s Cross Bay Swim. Thanks to the swimmers and the many local supporters and sponsors the Rotary Club of Jomtien Pattaya was able to raise well over 500,000 baht. RC Eastern Seaboard and Dutch RC Pijnacker - Nootdorp invited RC Jomtien-Pattaya to be a partner in their Rotary Matching Grant project for Clean Water. With the support from Vigilant Technologies and a grant from Rotary International they jointly will, by the end of this year, have installed Lomatec H2O water filtration units at 24 schools in Chonburi and Rayong provinces. The total project value is well over 2 million baht and at current two schools in Sattahip, two in Rayong, two in Ban Chang, two in Bo Thong, two in Huay Yai and one in Pong districts have been completed.
Two further schools in Bang Saray and Ban Ampur will be ready in September and there are more schools lined up in the Laem Chabang and Sriracha districts. All these projects are done in cooperation with the many local Rotary Clubs in the district.
The Clean Water Projects will be continued over the next years, but this year many other projects such as providing sanitation, first-aid medical kits, school uniforms, scholarships and youth activities are planned.

Hard Rock rocks home to No 1 position in Eastern Bartender Contest

From left to right: Panya Inkhongngam, 2nd place in the Bartender Contest; Chatchawal Supachayanont, general manager of Dusit Thani Pattaya; Mayor Ittiphol Khunplome; Suwanna Janphae, 2nd prize in the Miss Bartender category and Chatchai Saetai, 2nd prize in the Classic Bartender competition.

A young bartender from the Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya won the Eastern Bartender Contest and will now go forward to compete in the Thailand Bartender Championship at the end of this year.

Mayor Ittiphol Khunplome presents the championship awards.
In another triumph for the Eastern region, The City Sriracha won the Miss Bartender award.
The Eastern Bartender Contest 2008 was held on September 11 at the Dusit Thani Pattaya, and organized by the Thai Hotels Association Eastern Chapter. This was the 24th year for the event, which was formally opened by Mongkol Thamakittikhun, Banglamung district chief, and which included a mini concert performed by well-known folksinger Apaporn Nakhon Sawan.
Eighteen hotels took part in the Eastern Bartender Contest and Miss Bartender Contest. The concept was to encourage the creativity and flair of the young bar staff, who were presenting their own cocktail creations to a panel of judges.

Yutawanit Mangkong from the Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya shows off his championship form.
The winner for the Bartender Contest was Yutawanit Mangkong from the Hard Rock Hotel, who received a trophy and 15,000 baht. This was the first championship win for Hard Rock. The runner up was the Dusit Thani Pattaya, and Garden Seaview Resort & Spa captured third place. While the winner for Miss Bartender is Patsaraporn Ninson from The City Sriracha, runner up went to Dusit Thani Pattaya and Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa took the third place.
A number of other competitions took place during the event. The Wedding Flower Board was won by the Zign Hotel, the Coffee Break Thai Glory Theme was also won by a team of two from the Zign Hotel, the Table Set Up Thai Glory was won by a team of two from the Dusit Thani Pattaya, and the Classic Bartender Contest was won by the Long Beach Garden Hotel and Spa.
The Montien Hotel in Pattaya, an eight-time winner of the Eastern bartender championships, which had won the previous year, and which had also previously taken the Miss Bartender championships didn’t participate in this contest.

That would be shaken,
not stirred.

Poseidon turns five in style

Dr. Iain Corness
The Poseidon Boutique Guesthouse in Jomtien turned five last week and celebrated the event with a gourmet dinner in its own Poseidon restaurant. Owner Heiko Klimanschewsky welcomed around 65 guests to the celebration, and those who had not seen the guesthouse accommodation were taken on tours to view the tastefully appointed suites.

Heiko Klimanschewsky (left) and friend give the venue a duel thumbs up.
Whilst the Poseidon venue has had its own restaurant since the beginning, it was only around 18 months ago that the running of the restaurant was taken over by Pascal and Kim Schnyder, famous for their Casa Pascal restaurant in Pattaya.
With Pascal’s expertise in the kitchen and the cellar, the guests dined on such delicacies as Pacific Dory on sautéed spinach and lime with a white wine cream sauce, accompanied by a Chiaramonte Bianco 2006, followed by a traditional Beef Wellington and Ripasso Brolo del Giare 2003. Restaurant manager Hugh Millar regretting his decision to bring his car when he tasted the depth and complexity of the five year old red, chosen for the five year anniversary.

Absolutely delicious.
