Pattaya in takeover talks with Thai Premier League outfit

City may take over Bangpra FC

Saksiri Uraiworn
Premier League side Coke-Bangpra FC have become the subject of takeover talks with Pattaya officials as the city looks to enter a team in the 2009 Thailand Premier League competition.

Mayor Itthipol Khunplume says negotiations underway to bring Premier League football to Pattaya.

Pattaya Mayor Itthipol Khunplume made the announcement of the talks last week as well as unveiling plans to construct a new 700-million baht sports center and football stadium to be the home ground for the proposed new team.
The mayor said football was gaining in popularity in Chonburi, which will have three teams competing in the 2009 Thailand Premier League in the form of Chonburi FC, Coke-Bangpra Municipality FC and Sriracha FC. “They have the support of many fans and it will be good now to encourage more young players,” Itthipol said.
Taking over the Coke-Bangpra team will give Pattaya the services of many professional players. Earlier takeover talks with the Bangkok Bank Club, which was in danger of being broken up because of poor performance, did not succeed.
The new football field at the Eastern Sports Center being built will seat 20,000 spectators with the first phase of the construction initially providing 5,000 seats. A contractor will be hired at the beginning of November and the football field itself has a 90-million baht construction budget, the mayor said. “Pattaya will soon have its own football field,” he said.
Coke-Bangpra FC was recently re-elected to the Thailand Premier League and finished in 11th place last season. While matches are being played at the present Coke-Bangpra FC field, the new team would probably still be called Coke-Pattaya FC, however, when the team moves to the Eastern Sports Center its name may be changed to Pattaya United or Pattaya FC.
Pansak Ketwattha, manager of Coke-Bangpra team, said the new backing by Pattaya City was being negotiated and awaited a final decision but he confirmed the move “sounds possible.” He said it was good to receive support from Pattaya City because his team was struggling to find sponsors who now may be more forthcoming with new backing from the city.
“New players are being sought to join the team and many players are being watched among those released at the end of the previous season. There should be good news very soon about new additions to the team,” he said.
As for the new coach, right now coach Wisut Wichaya is being negotiated with but has not yet accepted the job. He is the former Bangkok Bank FC coach who trained the Coke-Bangpra team as assistant coach and led the upgraded team to play in the Thailand League, Pansak said.

The first tournament of the Pattaya-tennis.com Men’s Circuit took place from March –October this year and featured 60 men’s singles players and 24 doubles pairs from Pattaya, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and other parts of Thailand. Tennis players from fourteen countries participated in the tournament, which was held at the Siam Bayshore Resort & Spa.

Men’s singles winner Thitinan Pinpradap, right with runner-up Daniel Rajsky.

In the final of the men’s singles last month, Thitinan Pinpradap from Thailand took on Daniel Rajsky from the Czech Republic. In the first Set, Rajsky dominated with his strong serve and took the Set 6:3. In the second Set, Pinpradap used his skill from the back of the court and broke Rajsky two times to take the Set 6:2. The third and final Set was played as super-tiebreaker up to 10 points. In the dramatic final Pinpradap maintained his momentum and ran out the winner by 3 points, 10-7.
The men’s doubles final featured singles winner Thitinan Pinpradap and his partner Supanut Saithantrip who defeated Amnart Srila and Kojchakorn, both from Thailand, by a score of 6/4, 4/6, 10/8.

City slide to defeat in Bangkok

MBMG International League 2008/9

Paul Frain
Pattaya City played in the capital last Saturday against the British Club who in their previous four matches had won two and lost two, while City had remained unbeaten. City’s match the week before had been cancelled due to a storm that raged over Pattaya.
With the Brits team enjoying their first season in the top flight, they started the game with some clever passing movements and strived to gain control of the middle of the park, but City responded and Paul Derbyshire did one of his now famous shots on the turn, even though the end product was weak.
The pitch was slippery due to the amount of rain and control was difficult. The Brits adjusted to the conditions better than City and started to take control and their forwards missed good opportunities to open the scoring.
Tight marking and fierce tackling from the home team forced the City players into mistakes and gave the Brits confidence. Shots rained in on the Pattaya goal but fortunately they were all just wide while City replied with efforts from Mark Brittain and Graham Whittaker.
The City defense was marshaled manfully by the inform centre backs Brian Wilkins and Chris Robertson, but there was nothing they could do when the Brits took the lead midway through the first half. A loose ball was picked up by one of the Brits midfield players deep in his own half and he just took off towards the City goal. The defence just stood off, no challenges and no closing down which allowed the Brits player to shoot for goal from thirty yards out and the ball flew into the top corner giving the keeper no chance.
With the Brits being one nil up they piled on more pressure and City, whose players were sliding around in the wet conditions, were lucky not to conceded again. Finally Pattaya were able to carve out a chance but Graham Whittaker wasted a great opportunity to level the scores just before half time.
With City a goal down they had to do something in the second half to get themselves back in the game, but the harder they tried the worst they got. It was a case of missed tackles and careless passing with the midfield gone AWOL. The Brits capitalized on this and doubled their lead when one of their midfielders beat three City players before slotting the ball past a bemused keeper to make it 2-0.
Frustration crept in as things did not go right for City and the Brits still came forward but fortunately their shooting was way of target.
With time running out City finally put in one big effort to try and get something out of this match and after successive corners Craig Banks was able to stab the ball home to make the score 2-1. City piled forward and Mark Brittain had a clear shot at goal but could only hit it straight at the keeper. In the next minute there were also strong calls for handball by a Brits defender in the area but the appeal was turned down. A bit of hope, then turned to no hope as the referee blew for full time.
It was just one of those days that nothing would go right as the British Club could and should have scored more goals, but luckily they only scored two.
Floodlights at Horseshoe Point
Horseshoe point has now erected floodlights which will be of great benefit to Pattaya City Football Club. The Pattaya City Football Club manager, Rick Bryant, went last Saturday night to inspect the lights and see them tested. It is now hoped that the team’s outstanding fixture against The Londoner will be played under lights this coming Saturday with a kick off at 5:00 p.m.
Admission is free of charge and when you come to the barrier, just inform them that you have come to see the football. You will see the car park on the left and the football pitch on the right. Please ring Paul on 080 015 9433 after Wednesday to confirm that the match is on. Thank you to all the people who rang me and please keep the calls coming.

October’s winners (Left – right): Frank O’Neill, Pimusa Tonkhoksoong and Roger Stromstedt.

Booking-in with the day’s organizer, Nigel Cannon, went smoothly and all were looking forward to a good day’s golf. The weather had other ideas though with heavy rain and thunder arriving after the last group had completed 12 holes - resulting in a number of players coming in early, but many of the first starters continued to complete their round.
After a welcome hot shower, and a cool beer Alan Pearce worked out the winners for the day. Before announcing the results Nigel Cannon welcomed some new faces and some who had not played for some time with this group.
The next Diana Seniors for men over 50 and Ladies (any age) is on Thursday, 27 November at Pattaya Country Club. Sign-up at Diana Driving Range or the Green Bottle (2nd Road).

The Beautiful Game?: by Riz Taylor

Gunners under pressure

This coming Saturday sees one of the highlights of the Premier League season as Manchester United travel to the Emirates stadium to face Arsenal.
Perhaps this tie isn’t what it was as recently as five years ago, largely thanks to the improvement of Chelsea and Liverpool, but this fixture has extra significance this time around as the world waits to find out whether Arsenal are fading away in this season’s race for the title.
The Gunners looked comfortable against Tottenham last week, 4-2 up with five minutes remaining, and yet somehow managed to throw the three points away.  Any other side would have been thumping the ball towards the corner flags and trying every trick in the book in order to waste time, but that’s not the ‘Arsenal way’.
It should be their way.  Call it inexperience or call it over exuberance, in fact call it whatever you like, but Arsenal’s troubles began in the 89th minute of the North London derby and the hangover continued into last weekend’s deserved defeat against Stoke City, the goals coming from the remarkable throws of Rory Delap.  Fourth place might not be worrying for many clubs, and yet with Aston Villa impressing everyone this year you have to ask the question – is this the season that someone breaks into the Big Four?  Really?  The weekend’s big game will give us some insight into that one.
Villa face Middlesbrough at home on Sunday and that might be a bit tougher than it looks with Boro pulling out some decent results this campaign, but before then Blackburn and Chelsea get us started.  Chelsea are steamrollering all before them at them moment and you can’t see anything other than the same fate for Rovers at Ewood Park.  Fulham face Newcastle in Sunday’s late one, whilst Manchester City and Tottenham could be worth a watch.
There’s also a full Champions League programme midweek, if watching England’s big four embarrass the rest of Europe in this ridiculously one-sided and boring group stage is your cup of tea.   Liverpool are at home to Atletico Madrid, who’ll still be smarting after having two perfectly good goals chalked off in the corresponding fixture in Spain, whilst Roma host Chelsea. Early Thursday our time Arsenal host Fenerbahce and then it’s off to Scotland to see if Manchester United can put a dent in Celtic’s frankly amazing home record.  Apologies for choosing two United games, but this fixture along with Saturday’s trip to London really are the pick of this week’s action.
Abuse
Talking of Celtic, Heart of Midlothian are to investigate an incident at Tynecastle last weekend when Gordon Strachan, the Celtic manager, was verbally abused by a home supporter inside the stadium following Celtic’s 2-0 win in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.
Strachan was attending to some media duties in a back corridor of Tynecastle’s main stand when a Hearts supporter, believed to have emerged from one of the executive lounges, and seemingly under the influence of alcohol, referred to the Celtic manager as “an a***hole”.
Strachan was then seen to verbally remonstrate with the fan, who quickly made himself scarce.  The Celtic manager had just finished doing both television and newspaper interviews.
Adams and Keown to reunite?
New Portsmouth manager Tony Adams is still hoping that Martin Keown, his former central defensive partner at Arsenal, will become his assistant at Fratton Park and that Joe Jordan, the head coach, will stay on to create possibly the ugliest bench in world football.  “I had a quick conversation with Arsène Wenger [the Arsenal manager] about Martin and Arsène was thinking of taking Martin himself,” said Adams, whose side were unlucky to have been defeated at home to Wigan Athletic last Saturday.
“I have a few other people in mind, too, but I want it in place fairly quickly because I’m doing too much work and need another experienced defender to tell our inexperienced defenders where they’re going wrong.”
Megson hails Moyes
Bolton manager Gary Megson has held up Everton counterpart David Moyes as a prime example of what can be achieved with patience, according to the Daily Telegraph. Megson was abused by his own supporters during the recent 2-0 defeat at Tottenham and has yet to win over the Bolton public since his appointment 12 months ago.
Under-pressure Megson hailed Moyes’ successful six-and-half-year reign at Goodison Park as inspiration for what can be achieved by keeping faith with one manager over the long term.  Megson said: “Everton are a huge football club and David started there in the usual way of taking over at a club which was not particularly doing brilliantly.  David was a good manager at Preston - where he did an excellent job - and has carried that on at Everton, but it has taken him a while to get to where he is now.  He’s been there a long time and there has been steady progress throughout that time, which is the way it should be.”
Finally, West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola has admitted being in charge is far harder than he ever imagined.  According to The Sun, the Italian finds being on the bench more exhausting than when he was playing on the field itself.
“When I was a player I thought it looked so easy,” he said.  “Absolutely, I can assure you I thought it was much easier than this.  I am tired and, it has been tough.”

Mike makes a winning start

PSC golf from The Bunker

Monday, 27 October, Green Valley - Medal
1st Mikita Homma (16) net 75
2nd Mashi Kaneta (12) net 78
3rd Mick Benton (18) net 79
Mikito Homma playing his last game before returning to Japan turned in the best card of the day, going round in three-over par to win on a soggy, rain affected day. Mashi took second and Mick Benton came in third. The miserable scores were all blamed on the weather!
Only two par 3’s were hit so Mikito and Mick Benton shared the kitty between them.
Wednesday, 29 October, Khao Kheow - Stableford
1st Mashi Kaneta (12) 32pts
2nd William Macey (12) 32pts
3rd Tony Robbins (12) 30pts
Playing stableford at Khao Kheow there was a count back to split the winners; curiously, all the players in the frame played off handicap 12? Mashi beat William to win on the day and Tony Robbins claimed third place a couple of points further back.
John McDonald won two of the near pins with Mashi and John Hughes getting the other two.
Friday, 31 October, The Emerald - Stableford
A Flight
1st Mike Anker (12) 35pts
2nd Alan Sullivan (12) 35pts
3rd Paul Smith (3) 34pts
B Flight
1st Geoff Hart (19) 32pts
2nd Lawrence Harding (21) 28pts
3rd Gordon Melia (15) 28pts
Playing a “Rainbow” round of golf for a change the golfers showed up in force making it necessary to have two flights.
With the cut at handicap 13, newcomer Mike Anker playing off handicap 12 made a winning start by taking the honours in the A Flight, beating Alan Sullivan on a count back and Paul Smith came in third a point further back.
In the B Flight the scores weren’t so good but they enjoyed it just as much; Geoff Hart won ahead of Lawrence Harding who beat Gordon Melia on a count back.
Near pin prizes went to Gerry Cooney, John Graham, Paul Smith and Mike Anker.

Dennis proves he’s no mug at Phoenix

PSC golf from The PJ Pool Bar

Neil Duncan
Tuesday, October 28, Plutaluang S & E (White Tees) – Stableford
Ten of us took on a very soggy Navy with buggies being confined to the fairways, which meant preferred lies on mown areas.
John Roddis (11) had the best day out with 35 points, beating yours truly (15) into second place on count back. Jim Fortune (26) took third spot with 34 points.
Near pin bonuses went to yours truly x 2, Rob Gandley and Jim Walton whilst Brian Hardwidge sank the longest 1st putt on the 18th green.
Thursday, October 30, Phoenix Ocean & Mountain (White Tees) – Stroke Play
This month our stroke play competition was held at Phoenix, which was in excellent shape considering the soakings it has had recently.
Our Canuck from Campbell River, British Columbia, Dennis Jaycock (18) lived up to his promise of returning a winning card with a net 73 which included the longest first putt on the 18th green. John Roddis (11) came in second with net 77 and third place went to Jim Walton (22) with a net 78.
Near pin bonuses were claimed by David Gardner, Leon Proud and John Roddis. Following completion of the golf the field returned to PJ Pool Bar for some food and drink where Dennis was presented with the ‘mug,’ this being a fully loaded wine glass kindly sponsored by the bar.

First ever match abandoned at the TRGG

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Reporter Barry Hooper
I wrote last week that we should rename the month of October “ Hole in one Month”. I have now changed my mind and decided that we should call it the “Wet Month.”
Since I have lived in Thailand over the past three years I cannot remember a wetter few weeks. The outcome was that for the first time in the history of the TRGG (which is now over a year old) we had to actually abandon a match because of the weather.

Saturday winners: Eddie Townsend, Bob Richardson, Jack McNamara, Neil Allison,Matt Gibbons with Lom.

I am referring to the outing on Monday, 27 October to Bangpra. The match started in light rain but after play reached the ninth tee the rain was getting so heavy it was impossible to putt. So much so that a majority of players decided that they had to call it a day and walk in, thus making the competition void.
Tuesday, 28 October, Pattana - Stableford
1st John Thornber (17) 38pts
2nd G. Thwaites (10) 35pts
3rd Brian Beupre (5) 34pts
4th Phil Knight (10) 32pts
5th Stuart Rogers (11) 31pts
2’s: Ito Akitoshi, John Thornber, Brian Beupre
Pattana Golf Club was the venue of the day on Tuesday where courses A and B were played. The numbers taking part today were down to only nineteen, partly due I believe to the current inclement weather conditions that we are experiencing, so just a single division match.
John Thornber came out on top with thirty-eight points followed by G. Thwaites (sorry do not know the Christian name) with thirty-five. Third was Brian Beupre with thirty-four, fourth was Phil Knight and two players fought out fifth spot, Stuart Rogers taking it on count back over Tony Molloy, both at thirty one.
Thursday, 30 October, Phoenix - Stableford
Division 1
1st Matt Gibbons (10) 38pts
2nd Tony Molloy (11) 37pts
3rd Frank Higgins (10) 36pts
Division 2
1st Billy Fitzgerald (15) 39pts
2nd John O’Leary (17) 38pts
3rd Tewin Lamthong (14) 38pts
Division 3
1st Rose Jackson (19) 40pts
2nd Alan Evans (25) 35pts
3rd Noel Jackson (20) 32pts
2’s: Frank Higgins, John Thornber, Billy Fitzgerald, Tony Molloy, John O’Leary
Thursday, and it was back to our regular weekly visit to Phoenix (Ocean and Mountain). The entry was one of the biggest this year so three flights. It also appears that it was nearly an all-Irish affair at the top of the lists. I am uncertain of Matt Gibbons’ nationality.
Division 3 (19-up) saw Rose Jackson win with forty points, the highest on the day. This was her last outing before returning to the Emerald Isle the next day. Alan Evans found himself five back in second and Noel Jackson made it a family affair with third place and thirty-two points, beating our mister hole in one Donald Pearson on count back.
Division 2 (13-16) had Billy Fitzgerald (who has most definitely got his “Whiz” back) at top spot with thirty-nine, narrowly beating both John O’Leary (second) and Tewin Lamthong (third) who were both on thirty-eight.
Matt Gibbons made Division 1 (0-12) all his own with thirty eight points while just the one back in second was Tony Molloy at thirty-seven and a further point back in third was Frank Higgins.
Saturday, 1 November, Greenwood - Stableford
Division 1
1st Mike Rushant (12) 33pts
2nd Bob Richardson (14) 32pts
3rd Matt Gibbons (10) 32pts
4th Niall Higgins (13) 32pts
Division 2
1st Jack McNamara (20) 33pts
2nd Eddie Townsend (15) 33pts
3rd Neil Allison (19) 31pts
4th Patrick Brown (23) 31pts
2’s: Hilary Loftus, Mike Rushant
Saturday saw us take a trip to Greenwood as part of our rescheduled November weekend programme, thus saying farewell to Eastern Star.
Play progressed as scheduled despite it being yet another wet day. We had a very good turnout - players obviously like Greenwood despite the distance to get there - but I have to admit that the road is now greatly improved, as is the course. The only unfortunate thing was the weather, but let us be honest, it does at least stay warm unlike the UK right now.
The scores were nothing special today with all the winners being in the low thirties. Division 2 had Jack McNamara win with thirty-three points on count back from Eddie Townsend and Neil Allison third on a count back thirty one from Patrick Brown and John Thornber.
Division 1 had Mike Rushant win all on his own at thirty-three points with count back thirty-two’s for Bob Richardson (second) Matt Gibbons (third) and Niall Higgins (fourth).

Bunker win sets up dramatic finale

MBMG Pattaya Golf Matchplay League

Monday, 27 October, Burapha
There’s not much to be said about the poor performance of the Outback Golf Bar against the Bunker today, suffering a heavy defeat seven matches to three on their home course, Burapha.
An important match for the Bunker to win to keep alive their hopes of winning the MBMG Matchplay title; their captain William Macey fielded a very strong team.
Graham Johnson, playing for the first time in the league, probably would have fared better at Khao Kheow, where he went before Burapha, having missed the turning and not knowing about the U turns under the new road.
There was a glimmer of hope for the home side in the middle order with Gary Blackburne, Dave Boran & Barry Rothberg all winning their matches but that was about it. Jack got thoroughly beaten by the Bunker captain & golfer of the month, William Macey and Harvey Samuel just couldn’t hang on to John Hughes, who was sinking putts from everywhere on a course he had hardly played before.
Result: The Outback Golf Bar 3 v The Bunker 7.
(Outback scores first): Graham Johnson lost 4 & 3 v Paul Smith; Bernie Segrave lost 5 & 3 v Gerry Cooney; Bruce McAdam lost 6 & 4 v P J Redmond; Bruce Milner lost 2 & 1 v Ron Ryan; Gary Blackburne won 3 & 2 v John McDonald; Dave Boran won 2 & 1 v Tony Robbins; Barry Rothberg won 5 & 4 v Dave Booten; Rosco Langoulant lost 1 down v Alan Sullivan; Harvey Samuel lost 2 & 1 v John Hughes; Jack Moseley lost 4 & 2 v William Macey.
Friday, 31 October, Green Valley
The Caddyshack lost a critical match today against The Golf Club, which cost the long time leaders of the league, the MBMG title. All eyes are now on the final match to be played between Tony’s Tigers and The Bunker on Nov 7. Tony’s Tigers need to win or halve the match, whereas The Bunker can settle for nothing less than the outright win to take the trophy.
Result: Caddyshack 2½ v The Golf Club 5½.
(Caddyshack scores first): Steve Farther lost 4 & 3 v Simon Philbrook; Peter Henderson lost 1 down v Mark Reid; Vincent Smyth lost 8 & 6 v John McHugh; Graham Houston halved with Fred Brent; Bruce Tollitt won 4 & 3 v Paul Mendes; Damian Trant lost 3 & 2 v Ernie Hill; Dave Bramley lost 3 & 2 v Ernie McInerny; Ramsay Smith won 6 & 5 v Mike Frizzell

Damp conditions no problem for Steve

PSC Members & Guests Tuesday Golf Group at Phoenix

Mike Gerrard
Once again we looked at the sky and thought, are we going to be lucky again? The answer was YES! Although the clouds were around, they did appear to be a little higher and more broken.
There’s something about the location of Phoenix. It seems to be just close enough to the coast and just far away enough from the mountains to avoid the build up of the storm clouds. We had the threat of a storm, but just as it seemed it was about to unload it its burden, all of a sudden the clouds disappeared. Only Buddha knows where.
However, as I write this editorial it would seem the winds have changed and that the fair winter weather is finally arriving. So here’s to some good golfing conditions as soon as the fairways have dried out.
On to the golf and this week we welcomed back a couple of old regulars (Bob Lindborg and Georgio Baccioli) and a new comer, Steve Fathers. Steve is here on holiday from his very busy schedule, back in the UK training, what could be a future Wimbledon prospect. With him being somewhat of a professional tennis person, his hand/eye co-ordination proved to be of considerable use today. He finished top of the tree in the group with a respectable 33 points playing off 11 handicap.
Steve received the usual winners pot, after buying everyone a drink at Toy’s Music Bar, plus a voucher very kindly donated by Georgio Baccioli from the Trattoria Italian Restaurant.
The rest of the field were well behind Steve, finding the considerable wet conditions just too much to handle. Never mind, we’ll get our own back on Steve when he plays in the dry weather.
With the high season now in operation, tee times will be harder to pre-book. We have 4 tee times available this week and all through November. If you wish to join, please call me (Mike Gerrard) on 087 091 7565 to be sure of your place. Unannounced arrivals will be fitted in if there is room. Arrive 11.00am, 1st tee time 12.00noon.
Non-members of Phoenix can enjoy the special green fee price of 1,000 Baht as a guest of the members within the group. This is some 200 Baht cheaper than the PSC rate, and 600 baht cheaper than the visitors’ rate.

With the much-awaited northeasterlies about to replace the south-west Monsoons, the south-east Asian region and Asia generally are “tuning up” for a great array of regattas culminating for the year, in Thailand at least, in the annual Phuket King’s Cup for its 22nd sailing this December.  An established perennial favourite, Asia’s top maritime event is set to draw thousands of sailors, friends and their families to beautiful Phuket, for the ultimate celebration of competition sailing, camaraderie and, simply, a week of fun – and a little hedonism - a little?
This year’s regatta will be held from 30 November until 06 December, with the usual special salutations to HM the King, on his birthday, Friday 05 December.
Last year’s regatta featured strong winds, a record entry of over 100 craft and media coverage that spanned the globe.  “Thus, we are privileged to present what we know will be another wonderful Regatta for Thailand this year.  In fact, since the inaugural event way back in 1987,” noted Kevin Whitcraft, President of the 2008 Regatta Organizing Committee, at a recent press conference.
“This year’s racing class, the Formula One of the sea lanes, looks being even more competitive than usual, with some of the world’s best skippers descending on Phuket, from the four points of the compass.  Bill Bremner’s Foxy Lady IV will be challenging such regulars as Hong Kong’s, Neil Pryde and Frank Pong, amongst many great sailors,” said Simon James, director of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Race Management.
Among the 10 or more classes which will comprise this year’s action, the IRC 1 class is also looking good, with Koh Samui IRC Class Regatta champion Matt Allan, Commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, competing for the first time.  In IRC 2 class, top performers include multiple winners, the Royal Thai Navy teams.
The Regatta was established in 1987, to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King, who is the Regatta’s Royal Patron, and has continued annually, under the aegis of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy.  The Province of Phuket, through the office of the governor and the Tourism Authority of Thailand also strongly supports the regatta.
The Third Naval Area Command, Royal Thai Navy, which is based in Phuket, has always supported and facilitated the event with logistics as well as the pooling of their expertise and equipment, officers, boats, helicopters and Navy SEAL units, to ensure the security and safety of all involved with the event.
The organizing committee and principal sponsor, Raimon Land recently held a signing ceremony to formalize Raimon Land’s commitment to a five-year sponsorship deal through 2012.
As Raimon Land CEO Nigel Cornick reiterated at the signing, “We are delighted to continue our support of the Regatta for another five years.  The positive impact the event brings to the yacht racing and sailing in Thailand, as well as the local economy of Phuket, is outstanding.  Our sponsorship is one of the special ways we can give back to the community that has given so much to Raimon Land,” Nigel added.
The Kata Group, host sponsor for over a decade has again made available their resort on Kata Beach as the headquarters for the Regatta as well as the Phuket Orchid Resort, their recent award-winning “Best Family Hotel”, nominated by the Thomas Cook travel agency.
Sponsorship of the event this year will be helped by many organizations with interests in Phuket: Mom Tri’s Boathouse as the founding supporter, Thailand Elite, Siam Winery (Mont Clair wines) Thai Bev (Chang beer ++) and Sunsail.
Media sponsorships come from Phuket Magazine, The Nation, Phuket Gazette, Yacht Style and Ensign Media, to mention a few.
Although the Phuket Regatta virtually closes the 2008 racing season in Thailand, it is actually the prime event in nine races of regional regattas, held in five countries and a focal point in the myriad regattas around the region, launched and launching to optimize the benefits of the Northeasterlies.
Other exciting news for yacht racing in Asia for 2008, is the Volvo Ocean Race which will make Asian landfalls for the first time in the 34-year history of this incredible circumnavigation of skill, daring, stamina and tenacity.
With Rolex and many other sponsors climbing aboard the “Asian Express”, the Volvo stopovers in India, Singapore and China will bring the burgeoning yacht-racing and marine leisure sector, to the very doors of these two population and development giants.
Singapore, already in the vanguard of yacht racing and cruising with the advent of the superb “One Degree 15 Marina Club” on Sentosa Island, in the heart of the island republic, will host the 34th Volvo Ocean Race fleet for the month-long stopover in December.
Singapore is ideally located around mid-point of the two other Asian landfalls - Kochi and Qingdao, this latter of course, still basking in the glory of its superbly managed yachting division of the just-completed 29th Olympiad.
Everyone will benefit immensely from this bold move by Volvo, to bring the prestige, publicity and beauty of yacht racing into hitherto uncharted territories for such an event.
Not least of all the “One Degree 15 Marina Club”, whose Chairman Arthur Tay has brought to a small country an outstanding marina, capable of housing the world’s biggest yachts and power-boats, just 20 minutes from Orchard Road in downtown Singapore.
Other landmark racing events include the VinaCapital Hong Kong to Vietnam Race which, at some 656 nautical miles, is just a few nm longer than the world-famous Aussie event, the Sydney-Hobart race, held at year’s end.
Yet, they are entirely different races, the former known as the “downhill slide”, with following winds and big seas; whereas, the Sydney-Hobart is often a massive struggle against southerly head-winds and contrary tides in the shallow waters off the Tasmanian coast.  Curiously enough, the race records are close: Vietnam, 42hrs.45 mins, “Skandia” in 2004; Hobart, 42 hrs. 40 mins, “Wild Oats Xl” in 2005.
Then, there is the 19th sailing of the ongoing Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta for mid-November and the seventh Royal Langkawi International Regatta in January, followed by the Singapore Straits Regatta, later in January, the Philippines President’s Cup Regatta in February and the Rolex Hong Kong to Philippines Race in April.
All these regattas, plus Thailand’s Koh Samui and Top of the Gulf Regattas, are the template for selecting the winner of the Asian Yachting Grand Prix, presented to the winning skipper and yacht, at the Koh Samui Regatta in June.
The current champion to receive this Asian Yachting Grand Prix award – and, don the coveted “blue blazer”, if only temporarily, before AY man Captain Marty relieved him of it - is Australia’s Ray Roberts, who won the series helming his DK46, Quantum Racing.  To prove his consistency, Ray also just recently won the 23rd Audi Sydney Gold Coast, this time helming his Cookson 50, of the same name.  And, Ray will be at Phuket in December.
No doubt, 2008 has been a truly great year for yacht racing, marine sports and the concomitant infrastructure development.  Even with the most gloomy economic reports from the world’s capitals, the whole Asian marine leisure scene looks even better for 2009.
Already, at the time of press, there are some 75 entries for Phuket divided into 10 classes, up 40 per cent from this period last year.

The Square Ring: by Howie Reed

No don’t say it, another heavyweight title fight postponed because of injury to a Russian boxer? “Say it isn’t so,” cries an anguished disbelieving world. But alas it is so.
The greatest heavyweight of all time IBF/WBO Wladimir Klitschko may have to postpone his December 13 title defense against Alexander Powethkin. Why? Powethkin hurt his foot, which for those of you with a GED is one hell of a long way from his heart.
“The Russian gold medallist was running in the woods in his hometown of Kursk when he tripped over a tree root and injured his left foot,” Bernd Bönte, Klitschko’s spokesman said. “We are already in advanced talks with potential well-known opponents from the top ten of the world ratings.”
Translation? He went to Yahoo and typed in “Stiff’s in waiting.” First to answer the call was Oleg Maskaev. The Klitschko camp politely declined with a “don’t call us, we’ll call you.” Translated to boxing talk that means, “you’re flipping joking.”
De La Hoya- Pacquiao
One thing you have to love about promoters is that when they talk they’re either lying or they’re not. English promoter Frankie Warren is one of the best at talking out of both sides of his mouth while enjoying a beverage and maybe a nice cigar. In a recent Sky Sports interview Warren said that British ‘Wunderkind’ Amir Khan may not fight on the WBO champ Nicky Cook’s defense on December 6 in London. With Khan now training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles under Freddie Roach, Warren may opt for a U.S. fight.
“We may fight on the De La Hoya-Pacquiao card,” said Warren but he was telling ‘porkies’ as Khan will face Oisin Fagan (22-5) at the Excel in London on December 6. Fagan is a KO waiting to happen. Khan will be without trainer Freddie Roach who’ll be in Pacquiao’s corner that night in Las Vegas.
Promoter Bob Arum and “new” De La Hoya trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain hate each other like the Devil hates holy water. Neither passes on a chance to poke the proverbial “stick” in the other’s eye. Arum is the latest to strike.
On a Philippine radio show Arum opined, “Nacho Beristain will serve only one purpose, and that is to screw up Oscar. Nacho is a control freak and when he has a fighter from the beginning, like one of the Marquez brothers, he’s a terrific trainer. If he’s gonna try to impose his style on Oscar, who is not a quick learner, all Nacho’s gonna do is screw him up. Wait till you see. Oscar’s gonna change his style and it’s not going to work.”
Translation? Nacho is a control freak and Oscar isn’t too smart. Wonder what Buffalo Bob will have to say about the legendary Angelo Dundee joining the De La Hoya camp?
A flock of fights
Coming into the jr. bantam unification fight at The Home Depot Center, Carson, CA., Cristian Mijares (36-3-2) was a slight betting favorite over Vic Darchinyan (30-1). During the pre fight hype Darchinyan claimed he would “knockout Mijares” and silence his Mexican fans.
Rain eliminated most of the Mexican fans for this outdoor fight while Darchinyan’s left hand delivered the KO. From the knockdown in round one until the KO as the bell sounded to end round 9, Mijares was never in the fight. Darchinyan’s wild, powerful lefts had the right side of Mijares body bruised a deep purple from shoulder to beltline. It was a beat down with TSR scoring the fight 90-80.
Dinaire-Mthalane
Three big fights in Las Vegas but only one for a title. Nonito Donaire (19-1) after an extended layoff defended his IBF Flyweight title against South Africa’s Moruti Mthalane (22-1).
Sir Frog croaked, “Champion Nonito Donaire defended his belt via a sixth round TKO over Moruti Mthalane. Donaire is one of the few boxers who can fight both southpaw and straight. Moruti was good and followed with combinations until the doctor stopped the fight in the sixth round because of a cut on the eye. I didn’t see any cut, must have been serious!”
Arce-Garcia
Jorge Arce (50-4-1) is on the way back after losing the title to Cristian Mijares in April of ’07. He faced Isidro Garcia (25-5-2).
“Jorge Arce scored a fourth round TKO over ex-WBO champ Isidro Garcia. Garcia was laughing all the way calling Jorge to fight toe to toe, one thing he didn’t know was that Jorge hits very hard. He realized it in the fourth when he went down for an 8-count,” said Sir Frog. Referee Tony Weeks stopped it at 0:48 of the 4th round.
Chavez jr.-Vanda
While his Lordship was watching the Hopkins-Pavlik fight at the Santa Fe casino in Las Vegas, a gentleman sitting next to him volunteered, “Julio Ceasar Chavez jr. is better than his dad.”
The third fight from Las Vegas last Sunday morning featured Julio Cesar Chavez jr. (37-0-1) against. Matt Vanda (39-7). When they met the first time jr. scored an SD win.
From the Lily pad, cleverly disguised as Patrick’s fine Belgium Restaurant on Moo 10 comes, “Unbeaten ‘Son of the Legend’ Julio Cesar Chavez jr. left no doubt as he won a clear ten-round unanimous decision over Matt Vanda. He boxed good but a shame he doesn’t have that KO power. Maybe that’s why with a record of 38-0-1 (29 KOs) he never had a go for a world title? By the way, how did he get all those KO victories, I didn’t see any big punch power?”
In a post fight press conference Chavez jr. left no doubt that he’s as big a “jerk” as his Dad. “I think De La Hoya is going to have a very tough time with Pacquiao. He can win the fight, but my money is on Pacquiao. All the Mexicans are backing up Pacquiao.”
Sturm- Sylvester
At The Konig Pilsener Arena, Oberhausen, it was an all-German event when WBA middleweight champ Felix Sturm (31-2-1) defended against Sebastian Sylvester (29-3). Sturm did everything that was expected of him except score a KO as he got an easy UD (118-110 twice and 119-109). The KO wasn’t out of the question as Sturm came close in both rounds 11 and 12.
“For the first couple of rounds Sylvester managed to keep the battle close but as the rounds went on, the champion established his class, scoring with fast hands to the head and the body. Sturm was brilliant in both offense and defense, however, Sylvester showed heart.” So wrote Wolfgang Schiffbauer for fightnews.com
Next week’s action …hopefully!
The ‘really’ big fight of the weekend takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. For fans of undefeated ‘Joltin’ Joe Calzaghe (45-0) it’s his big and maybe final fight. Many leveled heaps of criticism on Calzaghe for ‘allegedly’ ducking quality opponents. That argument falls apart in some degree, when it’s recorded that in three of his last five he did indeed beat quality opponents. Both Jeff Lacy and Mikkel Kessler were dealt their only losses against Calzaghe and last out he beat Bernard Hopkins who just laid a whipping on Kelly Pavlik.
Across the ring will be Roy Jones jr. (52-4) who at one time was the “best pound-for-pound” in the pugilistic pond. This though is not the glory days of Roy Jones jr. Since he was KO’d in 2 by Antonio Tarver in ’04 his record has been less than scintillating. Glen Johnson clocked him in 9 followed by Tarver taking a UD in Jones hometown. The three following wins are nothing to write home about.
There is no question but that Jones has lots of “back class” as they say in horse racing. The question is how far back is it and can it be recaptured?
Sir Frog thinks that old timer Roy Jones jr. will open a really big can of “whip ass” on Calzaghe. “I look forward to Calzaghe going into retirement this Sunday morning with a beating from THE Roy Jones jr!” The Lord of the Manor leans towards Calzaghe who will then fight Hopkins once again.
Meanwhile IBF middleweight champ Arthur Abraham (27-0) is one tough dude. Skeptics who doubted that became believers when he took out Edison Miranda in 4 last June in Hollywood, Florida.
His latest title defense against Raul Marquez (41-3-1) was scheduled for October 4 but was postponed when Abraham got sick the day prior to the opening bell. The Abraham camp claimed it was the ‘flu’ but Marquez claimed he was weak from trying to get down to the 160lbs weight limit. Abraham’s last out was at 166lbs so there may be some credence to the charge.
Since Marquez lost to Jermain Taylor he’s gone 5-0-1, albeit against mid-level talent. If weight isn’t a problem then look for Abraham to score a KO.
All hail Peter Buckley
99.99% of all boxing fans have never heard the name of professional boxer Peter Buckley. He has plied his trade starting in 1989 and ending it last Friday night at the Aston Events Centre in England against Matin Mohammed. The two previously fought to a draw on October 5.
The October 5 encounter was Matin’s first professional fight so a draw probably was like a win. Back in 1989 Buckley started his career with a draw against Alan Baldwin in Staffordshire. He then went on a win streak of 6 but since then things have not been as good. From October of 2003 he’s been on somewhat of a losing streak going 0-84-2. Overall he’s 21-256-12, which while not necessarily a mark of quality does speak volumes to persistence.
For those that like statistics Buckley’s had a total of 300 fights and 1,740 rounds. For his farewell appearance in his hometown Buckley got the home corner.
“It’s great to get my final fight in my home city, but I’m not sure about being in the home corner,” said Buckley. “When the bell goes between rounds I’m not sure if I’ll know where to go! Win lose or draw, this is definitely my last fight …I definitely won’t miss getting punched in the face for a living!”
Buckley has lost to some quality boxers in Scott Harrison, Naseem “The Lop Eared Camel Jockey” Hamed, Michael Brodie and Gavin Rees.
Some time ago Buckley credited boxing with keeping him on the straight and narrow. “If it weren’t for boxing I’d probably be in jail,” he said. The story has a happy ending as Buckley won on points to go out with the “W”. All hail you Peter Buckley.
Jeeves Jives
“Your Lordship your ruse is over. You have been unmasked as the charlatan that you are. I intercepted an e-mail sent to you by an infamous member of the boxing community. It reads, ‘Who writes this ****? Couldn’t be you, it’s too good.’ I rest my case your Lordship.”
“Jeeves, the gentleman seems to be less than articulate. Whilst I should be concerned, I’m not. You’ve laid on a goodly supply of lager, cigars and good music on DVD. Thus I’ll ignore your insubordination you English w***** as I still get the big bucks while you wallow in the servant class. Cheewit Dee Krap, which if you used your Rosetta Stone language course like I have you’d know means “Life is Good.”

Steele & Thongkiew top the pairs; Philbrook takes monthly medal

PSC golf from The Golf Club

John Emmerson
This is the first article written to assuage the critics of the under worked and over compensated golf manager. This week has been eventful in that we traveled to Soi Dao for two days of drunken competition - played our monthly medal at Siam, competed in the MBMG match play league against the formidable team from Caddy Shack, and slogged it out behind the Outback Bar on Plantation.
Soi Dao was splendid with only one hole played in the rain. This time of year that’s lucky. Day one was a stableford competition that ended in a draw - that’s right, Phil Mitchell and Kris Kritsanajootha both had 34’s and the management does not do count backs on drunken road trips.
The second day was a two-person scramble with Steven Steele and Mon Thongkiew winning with an impressive net 63.
The last Thursday of each month is played at Siam off the blue tees and constitutes our Monthly Medal. Simon Philbrook took this month’s medal with a wet net 76 beating the scribe by one.
Since the scribe played at Plantation with one of our many touring groups, he did not get to play in the match against Caddy Shack - the match went our way 5½ to 3½, now the league results are in the balance waiting for Tony’s Tigers and The Bunker to square up and decide the thing …good luck boys!
The week ended with all those not in match play enjoying the day with Captain Bob and Jack at the Outback outing on Plantation. This is a weekly thing ‘cause Bob and Jack know how to get value for your money and the caddies at Plantation are just so fine. Anyway it was great fun just playing and not keeping score - everyone was a winner on Friday.
Golf Rules Tip: Closely mown area means any area of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less.

Norman Isherwood almost wins three

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, 27 October, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Norman Isherwood 38pts
2nd Russell Exley 38pts
3rd Robert Lamond 37pts
4th Brian Beaupre 37pts
5th Al Keith 36pts
Green Valley on a Monday can be either weekend tees or back at the normal white positions. This day the tees were back and the weather made the course even longer, which kept the scores fairly low although the CSS stayed at 72 for the day.
Norman Isherwood continued with his good run of form to take his first win of the week but needed to be good over the inward nine, which he was, with 19 points but he was even better over the back six with 13 points to Russell’s 11, which was enough to secure top spot.
Robert Lamond put in another solid round at one-under to take third place ahead of Brian Beaupre by virtue of his 21 points on the back nine, as Brian could only manage 20.
Al Keith was reduced to fifth with an even par 36, to round out the podium.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Peter Sumner and Brian Beaupre had one each in the first.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new member Philip Knight and also welcomed back Peter Sumner.
Wednesday, 29 October, Treasure Hill - Stableford
1st Norman Isherwood 36pts
2nd Trevor Schirmer 35pts
3rd Alan Griffiths 35pts
4th Derrick Ball 34pts
5th B.J. Smith 33pts
For the first time in many months the hopefuls traveled to Treasure Hill, which is now a reasonable trip up the 331 with the road works all but completed and the travel time is about the same as to Bangpra. With the recent weather making courses play at their very longest, it was decided to play from the yellow tees and with the ball running nowhere on the fairways it still provided a fair test as the scores indicated.
Once again it was Norman Isherwood at the head of the field as he produced yet another sterling round, albeit an even par one, to take the day’s top honours by a single shot from Trevor Schirmer who had been hoping to slip in a win before leaving for a few weeks. Trevor had to be content with second ahead of Alan Griffiths with a better count back of 19 to Alan’s 18. Alan Griffiths has now got the hang of the game required to play off his new and much lower handicap, as he showed by putting in a good round on a course that he had not played for over a year to take third place. Derrick Ball slipped into fourth spot for his first podium placing during this trip ahead of B.J. Smith.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but again there were two in the first division, one by Russell Exley and one by Norman Isherwood.
Prior to the prize giving The Doc welcomed new members Alasdair Welsh and Stuart McKenzie and also welcomed back Philippe Berra, Erik Donnestad, Graham Johnson and John Teague. There was also a farewell to Trevor Schirmer, who will be sorely missed, especially by Stephen and his assistance with organisation, while he is away in Oz for six weeks.
Friday, 31 October, Phoenix Blue - Monthly Medals
Division 1
1st Russell Exley net 71
2nd Mike Dabanovich net 71
3rd Norman Isherwood net 75
Division 2
1st Chris Knapp net 77
2nd Ole Stamnes net 80
3rd Brian Kelly net 80
c/b Phil Stringer net 80
In the first division, Russell Exley took his second medal of the year to deny Mike Dabanovich a place in the year end Gold and Silver Medal competitions, thanks to a solid one-under on the count back as Mike trailed by three and a half shots, Mike having gone out in one-over gross and looking good to take his first medal for a couple of years. Russell’s fine play ensures that he will go one step nearer to his target of becoming a category one golfer by the year’s end.
Norman Isherwood, striving to be only the third player to win three times in a week out of the Haven, failed in that attempt but still did well enough to take third place with another good round.
The second division was won by Chris Knapp, to bring his total of medals for the year to four as he easily led in the chasing group by three strokes. Ole Stamnes took second place with a net 40 on the back nine and 25.6 on the back six, to place Brain Kelly third as Brian could only manage a net 28 over the last six. Phil Stringer had an honorable mention with a 41 over the inward half. There were no 2’s in either division.
Back at The Haven, The Doc welcomed back Phil Stringer and Paul Hartley and gave a fond farewell to Mike Dabanovich.

Knight seals monthly award at Greenwood

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Derek Brook
Tuesday, October 28, Greenwood A & B – Stableford
It never seems to stop raining at the present time, does it? We set off with the best of intentions, then it throws it down and back we come soaking wet. The night before my phone rang constantly with players asking if we were going, and all I could say was, ‘Wait till the morning.’

Craig, left, from Alan Bolton Property Consultants presents the golfer of the month award to Bill Knight.

Next morning bright and early, I looked at the sky and it was clear and promised a great day, but these days we know better, however the decision was made immediately to go and not even phone to check. Of course Greenwood was soaking wet when we arrived and carts were not allowed off the paths, but still we got around really well. The greens were still lightning fast and the fairways all had dry spots on you could move your ball to. All in all the course was in great shape, and for the first time in what seems like an age it did not throw it down.
The results held a lot of interest as this was the last competition of the month, and ‘The Alan Bolton Golfer of the Month’ award was to be decided. Leading was Bill Knight and close behind was Les Charles. If Bill finished ahead of Les he would win.
So to the results of the day: In fourth place was Brendan McGovern, who played with his normal skill and had 38 points. Brendan is a +1 handicapper so this meant a gross 69, and I suppose we were a bit fortunate as the last time he played this course with us he shot a gross 64. We must be thankful for small mercies, but it would be nice to be able to play so well, ‘one can only dream’ as Badger said through the tears.
In third place was Phil Barnsley with 39 points, well done Phil, he only had to be given a shot a hole from Brendan, keep trying. In second was Peter Whitehead with 40 points, I think his name is spot on as every week he seems to change the colour of his hair and I am waiting for it to be black before I change his name. So to the winner and of course Bill Knight steamed in with 41 points.
There was now no doubt as to the winner of the ‘Alan Bolton Golfer of the Month’ title and once again it was Bill Knight leading the way. Very well played Bill. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Brendan McGovern (2), Mick O’Meara Mashi
Long Putt: Tony Scrambler, Bill Knight

Outbackers hit form to win Thai Garden Resort Cup

PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar

Joey’s Column
Monday, 27 October, Burapha - Stableford
It was a pretty soggy Burapha that greeted the 55 Outbackers that played American Links & British Wood from the Blue Tees today. In addition to the regular Monday tournament, 10 more Outbackers were pitched into battle against 10 of the Bunker’s finest, in the MBMG Matchplay league.

Dave Boran (left) collects the Thai Garden Resort Cup on behalf of the Outback Golf Bar while team captains Bob Philp (center) and Helmut Wolf (right) look on.
The now commonplace two-tee start had everybody away by 10.40am for a round that took a little longer than usual, as the carts were restricted to the cart paths only. By the halfway point, the clouds and heavy rain had enveloped the Laem Chabang course, the caddies broke out the golf bag ‘condoms’ and it seemed only a matter of time before everybody would be scampering for cover. Miraculously however, the storm slipped by with only a smattering of rain, enabling the completion of the tournament & matchplay without interruption.
Eddie Smith continued to show his love for this venue, racking up another win on his ‘home course’, with a fine 36 points, three ahead of a three-way count back for second place; Steve Newlan taking that by virtue of his better back nine.
A newbie to the Outback Golf Bar, Kevin McEntee won Div B with the best of the day 39 points and will be playing off 10 next time. Second was one of the early starters, Art O’Connor on 37, who was in turn five ahead of three guys on 32.
Div D, featured a couple more Irishman, Mick Doyle who won on 36 and John Cogan third on 33, whilst the two Aussie cousins, Bob Chiofalo & John Sarcasmo completed the podium, with 35 and 31 pts respectively.
Stuart McKenzie won Div C, on count back from last week’s winner Steve Plant, both with 35.
The second semi-final of the Outbacker Pairs Trophy was also played today, Eddie Smith & Paul Bourke eventually getting the better of Gary Hewson & George Bishop on the last hole; they will now meet Capt’ Bob and the Sugarman in the final.
There were seven ‘2’s coming from Keith Allen, Joe Mooneyham, Bruce Milner, Kerry Purcell, Alan Campbell, Terry Smith & Capt’ Bob.
Finally, just a reminder to all the regular Outbackers, that the monthly ladder returns this week, starting at Burapha on 3rd November.
Div A (0-10)
1st Eddie Smith (8) 36pts
2nd Steve Newlan (10) 33pts
3rd David Palmer (6) 33pts
4th Paul Bourke (10) 33pts
Div B (11-13)
1st Kevin McEntee (11) 39pts
2nd Art O’Connor (12) 37pts
3rd Emmet White (11) 32pts
4th Joe Mooneyham (13) 32pts
Div C (14-18)
1st Stuart Mckenzie (17) 35pts
2nd Steve Plant (14) 35pts
3rd Yves Moutier (15) 35pts
4th Michael Padilla (17) 34pts
Div D (19+)
1st Mick Doyle (19) 36pts
2nd Bob Chiofalo (22) 35pts
3rd John Cogan (20) 33pts
4th John Sarcasmo (20) 31pts
Wednesday, 29 October, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Playing in Div A may indicate a lower handicap than those in Div B & C, but it doesn’t necessarily mean a better standard of golf. It was a poor show from the 10 Outbackers that played in the premier division, with a remarkable 33 points being the top score. Even more remarkable was that Capt’ Bob came second with a very mediocre 32.
Thirty-two Outbackers were out there today, the first visit to this nearby course for some months, since 2 May to be precise; and it was soggy underfoot. The slower than normal play and the persistent rain on the back nine suggested difficult playing conditions, but not so for Div B or C.
Sugar Ray returned a score of 40 to win Div B, from Chris Ronnblad & Geoff Doody, both on 39; but the top score of the day came from Joachim in Div C, with 41 points beating Chad on 38 and course specialist Nigel Cannon, with 37.
Did these guys play the same course as Div A? Well played indeed!
There were five ‘2’s coming from Reg Taylor, Kathy Doody, Barry Rothberg, Henry O’Brien & John Scott.
Div A (0-17)
1st Eddie Smith (8) 33pts
2nd Bob Philp (7) 32pts
3rd Bruce Milner (14) 31pts
Div B (18-20)
1st Sugar Ray Hanford (19) 40pts
2nd Chris Ronnblad (18) 39pts
3rd Geoff Doody (20) 39pts
Div C (21+)
1st Joachim Oestreicher (25) 41pts
2nd Barry Chadbourn (21) 38pts

Friday, 31 October, Siam Plantation – Thai Garden
Resort Cup
It really all started a couple of months ago when Helmut Wolf & Uwe Wegner, to name but two, came into the Outback Golf Bar after their round of golf at Siam Old Course. They introduced themselves as the German Swiss Golf Club, shared a few beers and stories with Capt’ Bob & Jack and signed up to play the Plantation course the following week. From there on, not only did they become frequent visitors to the bar but also good buddies of Bob & Jack, and the Thai Garden Resort Cup was born.
A two man scramble match consisting of 24 players from the German Swiss Golf Club against 24 Outbackers, sponsored by the newly opened Thai Garden Resort with all the proceeds going to help the local kids in Naklua. This event did not require any promotion, all 24 places on both teams sold out immediately, so popular was the concept the numbers had to be increased twice to the eventual limit of thirty a side.
Joined by a small regular competition and a few groups from The Golf Club, some 84 golfers were lined up to play on this wonderful local course. Approaching the clubhouse that was virtually obscured by the low mist and rain, it brought back memories of what it is like to play golf in the UK this time of the year, just a few degrees warmer though. Was it going to be possible to play or yet another day when this dreadful spell of weather was going to upset the day’s proceedings? You could have got two to one on with any bookie that it was going to rain all day.
Well it didn’t, the rain stopped and the sun came out much to everybody’s disbelief yet delight. Play was a little slow and conditions were difficult but the pick, clean and place within one club length’s rule for the main competition made things a little easier.
Back to a marvelous evening at the Moon River Pub with some excellent food and complimentary quaffing of much beer, wines and spirits to one’s heart’s content until midnight. Mixed with the Philippine band playing some brilliant music on this Halloween night, a good time was had by all.
The prize giving was presented by Helmut & Bob, the three winning pairs; namely Hans & Jo (66.7), Bruce & Eddie (67.5) and Jack & Heath (68.2) all receiving golf clubs, the near pins getting a putter or set of golf clubs and the runners up, the German Swiss Golf Club, the silver medal.
The Outback Golf Bar team were all awarded the gold medal and The Thai Garden Resort Cup. After an interlude of some more music and dancing, Capt’ Bob auctioned off a few items to add to the monies raised for the Naklua kids which reached a total of 34,700 Baht.
For the records, the final result was the Outback Golf Bar 11, the German Swiss Golf Club 4. Well done to everybody concerned with great day out, it won’t be too long before there’s a rematch.

As the boys and girls made their way to Green Valley, it was raining cats and dogs and things were looking ominous. But surprisingly the rain eased and play began on time and, I do believe every one completed the round, though it was reminiscent of a normal day back in the U K.
To A Flight first and firing a super 40 points was Marc Napier to take top spot. Co Cork’s famous son, The Right Honorable Semus Cotter secured second with 38 points, leaving the straight hitting Kris K to finish in third on 37 pts.
B Flight provided the man of the match in Ted Lodge who carded a superb 42 points. Chaten Patel came in second place four shots short on 38 points and Bruce Skippy Milner concluded the flight with35.
Tom Byrne secured first place in C Flight on 38 points, Aussie Lou Szeigileti “if you were wondering were Lou resides” came in runner up one shot adrift on 37 and rounding out the flight was Co Dublin’s connoisseur of the black stuff, Peter Henshaw, with an even par round of 36 points.

The Desmond Muirhead designed St. Andrews was host to Lewiinski’s golf society, to play a stableford competition.
A Flight saw Paul West and Peter Hynard locked together at the top, both firing 40 excellent points. Paul took the flight and man of the match courtesy of a slightly better back nine. The unlucky Kevin Mcentee missed out by a single shot.
Matt Doyle took B Flight carding 39 points. Two shots adrift of Matt was the Aussie Lou Szigileti and that man Peter Henshaw on 37 points. Lou took second place on the podium on a count back

“Its here … night time golf with Lewiinski’s.” Yes that’s right, Tee off at three thirty, and play on with the aid of floodlights till you finish the round. A great night out was had by all the competitors. Interested? Give the Guv a call.
Christy Knight was for some reason the clear favorite but failed to live up to his name. The senior flight winner was the ever-smiling Chaten Patel with an unbelievable 40 points on a count back over Kevin Mcentee on the same unbelievable 40 points. The Governor was one shot back which kept him in the dark.
To be sure! Peter Henshaw, took home the bacon in the junior flight, with an even par 36 points while Pierre Bietry shone through the night to take second position on 34.
The lads arrived back at Lewiinski’s around about nine thirty, to cap the night of with a pint or two of the black stuff.

The Lewiinski’s golfers held a four-man team event in aid of George Jackson, whose wife passed away recently and left George with the task of raising two young children, a task I might add that George relishes.
The format was the two best scores out of the four scores to count. The course was in fabulous condition, and the sun shone all day. After the game it was back to Lewiinski’s for the presentation, raffle and an excellent buffet
The star prize for the raffle was a Callaway golf tour bag, followed by a Wishon lob wedge, a putter and lots of other prizes.
Firing a super 85 points for third place was the team the “Guinness Guzzlers” who won a meal at the Lewiinski’s. Second place was claimed by “The Jackson Four” team on a great 87 points; they took home a Callaway golf bag each. Winning the day with an unbelievable 97 points were the team “Simply the Best” who won a golf voucher each valued at 2,000 baht.
The golf bag was won by no other than Roy Thornton’s better half. After what was a super day, George, Nocky and Bee would like to thank every body for all their kindness - thank you all.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattayaland Soi 1, Beach Road, Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in, and add your name to the list or call Bob on 080 096 8232. Transport is provided.

Key on song at Pattaya Country Club

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

Tuesday, October 28 found “Herbie’s Gang” teeing off early as usual and both the course and weather were just fine.
Bill Key, who recently had his handicap cut, will find some more serious slicing this week and not on the fairway. Coming in with 43 points, Bill might see his handicap “sliced” well below his current 26. John Christie, usually right up there at the top came in with 37 points to take second place while most of the other players seemed to be having a bit of trouble and came in with scores below their usual good numbers.
The group retired to Caddy Shack II to enjoy some of Herbie’s delicious spicy sausages with cold beverages served by “Mae” a new and welcome addition to the Caddy Shack II staff.

Larsen hits sparkling form at Crystal Bay

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, 27 October, Crystal Bay – Stableford
There were a few late cancellations owing to the recent weather conditions and only 28 players made it out today.
The A and B nines were selected and with no rollovers in either division in the 2’s it was all to play for today. In Division 1, Takeshi Hakozaki birdied the 6th on the B course to become the only winner while in Division 2 there were none, so the kitty builds up yet again.
Ten points separated the three winners in Division 2 with Alan Bissell in third place with 33 points, Les Hall second on 37 and in form Dannie Larsen winning with 43 points. Warming up now after the cold weather in Estonia and still playing off 7, Raivo Velsberg’s 31 points gave him third place in Division 1, two points better was Paddy Wilson in second and the winner was Andy Mills with 35 points.
Nearest the pins in Division 1 were Arvo, Peter Seward (2) and Takeshi and in Division 2, Les hall, Dannie Larsen, Jean Morel and Miss Oam.
Wednesday, 29 October, Green Valley - 1-2-3 team Stableford
Division 1
1st Harry Riley 40pts
2nd Roy Thornton 35pts
3rd Ted Morris 34pts
Division 2
1st Cully Monks 38pts
2nd Burnie Sinclair 35pts
3rd Glyn Evans 34pts
Division 3
1st Alan Bissell 35pts
2nd Miss Nom 32pts
3rd Jimmy Johnson 30pts
Near Pins: (Div 1.): Jeff Chapin, Peter Pedder, Harry Riley. (Div 2.): Kari Aarnio, Burnie Sinclair, Mam Morel. (Div 3.): Martin Anderton, Alan Bissell, Ken Foster.
Our fun day of the month, with an individual stableford competition in three divisions for the 42 players and also a 1-2-3 game for the 14 teams.
A total lack of communication from the management relating to the abysmal conditions of the greens was the talking point from everybody as they all returned to the clubhouse. With a quarter of an inch of sand on five of the greens and the rest also heavily sanded we would not have gone out had we known. There were heavy footprints on the greens after the first group went out and to make it worse we were told by the steward afterwards that we could have played St. Andrews for the same price. As always, there was nobody back at the clubhouse in a position to discuss this matter.
In the 1-2-3 team event, in third place with 68 points were Martin Anderton, Andy Oz and Dave Ross, in second place one point better came Alan Bissel, Jim Connelly and Miss Nom, and the winners with 84 points were Mikael Andersson, Harry Riley and Roy Thornton.
Harry Riley’s birdie on the ninth was the only ‘2’ of the day and the Ladies Tipple was justifiably awarded to the driver and his co pilot who left Siam Cats at 8.50 for the 10.00am tee off and then after a phone call at 10.10 saying they were 20km past Rayong and could not find the course. Well done Chris Holmes and Andy Mills, as they arrived at 11.30am.
Many thanks this week go to Don Head for hosting his retirement party at the bar; the superb buffet food provided by Simple Simon’s was thoroughly enjoyed by all. There was also live music and entertainment until the early hours. All the very best in the future to Don from all of us at Jomtien Golf.

Sunday, 26 October saw the second annual Beaver Bar & Grill v Camel Pub Golf Challenge take place. A total of 12 teams (24 players each side) showed up at the Emerald Golf Club in Ban Chang to take part in the 2-man better ball competition.
Light rain continued throughout the day, but all players finished their matches without hesitation until the final outcome was reached.
The Camel Pub recorded 6 wins and 2 draws while the Beaver had 4 wins and 2 draws. The Camel Pub were thus declared the winners and Larry Willett presented the travelling trophy to the victorious skipper, Ronnie Coulson.
