Alcano wins all Philippine 9-Ball final in Pattaya

Ronnie Alcano, third right front, receives the 9-Ball Invitational winner’s trophy and a cheque for 300,000 baht from Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome, center pink shirt, with the runner-up, Lee van Corteza standing third left.

Staff reporters

Former world champion Ronnie ‘the volcano’ Alcano won an all Philippine showdown at the inaugural Pattaya 9-Ball Invitational pool tournament held at the Royal Garden Plaza last weekend.

Alcano took advantage of opponent Lee van Corteza’s foul shot in the opening frame of Sunday‘s final to run off four racks on the bounce and in the process threaten to finish the match in short order.

Corteza however had shown some excellent form on his way to the final and he gradually fought his way back into the match with some impressive clearances en route to tying the scores up at 7-7.

Alcano surveys the table on the way to winning the final 11-7 over compatriot Lee van Corteza.

The pivotal fifteenth frame proved to be the crucial point in the match with both players starting to feel the tension and making mistakes. It was Alcano however who rode his luck best to take out the rack and he used his superior breaking power thereafter to keep Corteza sat in his seat as he took the last four racks needed for victory.

The 38 year old from Calamba City in the Philippines received the winner’s trophy and a cheque for 300,000 baht from Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome while runner up Corteza took home a consolation prize of 50,000 baht.

The tournament, the first of its kind in Thailand, proved to be a big hit with the Pattaya public and visiting tourists who packed out the ground floor of the Royal Garden Plaza on each of the three days to watch the cream of the world’s pool players battle it out. Everyone involved will be hoping to see this event back here again next year.

United sunk by Thai Port in battle for fourth spot

Staff reporters

Pattaya United gave a somewhat flat performance in a 1-0 defeat to Thai Port FC at a rain swept Nongprue Stadium last Saturday, and in the process they passed up the opportunity to push for a top four spot in the Thai Premier League.

United were lucky not to fall behind in the opening minute of the match when Thai Port’s Chakrit Boonkham found himself clean through on goal after a mistake in the Pattaya defence, but with just Narit to beat he fired his shot wide from 10 yards out.

It should have served as a wake-up call for United but they seemed to be playing the game in second gear while Thai Port’s striking duo of Jacob Aikhionbare and Sarayuth Chaikamdee were causing all kinds of problems for the shaky Dolphin defence.

The visitors went close on a number of occasions in the first half with Chaikamdee striking the side netting from 20 yards and the same player seeing his fierce left foot shot well parried by Narit.

Against the run of play United nearly took the lead with their only real chance in the first half, but Somchai Singmanee saw his shot unluckily bounce back off the foot of the Thai Port goal post and out to safety.

With the United defence coming under pressure whenever Thai Port attacked it came as no surprise when the visitors took the lead in the 37th minute through Kiatcharoen Ruangparn, the midfielder running onto a clever through pass from Chaikamdee to beat the offside trap and slot the ball past Narit in the Pattaya goal.

With the half time whistle came a heavy downpour of rain which made conditions difficult for both teams as they emerged for the second period.

United sent on Tana Chanabut to replace the ineffective Arthanas and they began to look more lively up front, forcing Thai Port keeper Pattarakorn Tang-anurat into a couple of smart saves.

The visitors were also dealt a blow just after the break when Rangsarn Iamwiroj received his second yellow card of the game following an obstruction on Anucha and Thai Port were reduced to ten men. United failed however to make their numerical superiority count for the remainder of the half and indeed it was Thai Port who looked the most likely to score as the game drew to a close, with Narit being called on to produce a number of saves.

With just three matches left in the current season United will be looking to consolidate their sixth place position in the league as both SCG Samut Songkram and Osotspa M-150 threaten to close the gap. United’s next match is this coming Sunday against bottom team Bangkok United. Kick off scheduled for 6 p.m.

Thai Raver Dick Sanders Memorial has sailors smiling

Kipsan Beck

In September, Ocean Marina yacht racing saw the largest fleet of the year sailing from Jomtien, around the islands to Sattahip and back in beautiful September conditions.

Dick Sanders R.I.P. at the Helm of “Thai Raver” in 2009.

Sadly, event founder Dick Sanders and his crew on “Thai Raver” began the race last year, but earlier in 2010 Dick passed away, with his ashes scattered in the Harbour at Sattahip. As a close friend of all the sailors, many new boats chose to enjoy the race as a way to stay close to a dear companion on the water and off it.

Saturday thus saw 22 boats spread over cruising, racing, sportsboats and multihull divisions, heading out on the course around Koh Khram then into Sattahip Harbour. Conditions were challenging, with a dying 5-8 knots breeze and a building incoming tide pushing boats back towards the start.

Off the line, David Bell’s “Magic Roundabout” sailed a close inshore course, beating the rest of the racing division to the shortened course finish ahead of “Dynamite”. In the Cruising division, Jean Rhault’s “Souay 1” used the opposite strategy, staying well clear of the islands and enjoying slightly more breeze out to sea, taking the honours for Saturday, followed by “Dutch Raver” and “Suansanook”.

IRC Racing’s “Le Vent” in action at this year’s event.

Scott Galle won the multihulls ahead of “Voodoo Doll”. The sportsboats proved to be the quickest boats of the day, with Shaw 650 “Pornstar” reaching Sattahip harbour while the rest of the fleet were still at Koh Khram; the 2 platus finishing 2nd and 3rd.

A big party on Saturday evening had everything from prizes to an Elvis impersonator, as many enjoyed talking about their favourite memories of Dick, and not even a late night thunderstorm could dampen spirits.

Sunday morning saw glassy conditions, as the rain clouds sat over Sattahip hills; more than a few boats were seen making offerings to Dick Sanders as the boats sailed out of the bay. Off the start, a short upwind leg then saw the fleet on a shy reach which gradually turned into a deep downwind run as winds swung southerly, peaking at 6-8 knots.

Mikael Pophillat’s new Thompson 650 “CU Later” gave the fleet a nice view of their keel as they hoisted their enormous grey spinnaker in the shy conditions, but as winds gradually swung south, further down the channel, navigators needed to choose to stay out to sea, in stronger winds but fighting the tide, or hug the shore line but give up some wind pressure.

In the cruising division, “Souay 1” sailed well to reach the finish first, but on handicap Andrew Watt’s “Suansanook” took the honours from “Dutch Raver” in 2nd.

Sportsboats saw “Pornstar” winning on line, but “Puma” and “CU Later” in 1st and 2nd once handicaps were applied.

In the keelers, “El Coyote” bounced back with a 1st ahead of “Dynamite”, with K Pote’s stylish Sunfast “Le Vent” taking out 3rd place on handicap. “Black Swan” once again took out the multihull honours.

October sees a peak in yacht racing with fleet sailing on the weekend of October 9-10, then the finale in the Platu Championship running 22-25 October, which is one of the region’s largest one design fleets.

Greg Ritchie gets his first hole in one

PSC golf from The Caddyshack

Wednesday, Sept. 29, Greenwood - Medal

Fifteen players took on the challenging Greenwood A&B layout from the white tees in a Medal competition.

Greg Ritchie tells the world about his ‘Ace’ at Greenwood.

Nick Toon put on a master class in the A Flight to record a gross 71 off his scratch handicap. He was joined on the same score by Graham Beaumont but Nick had the edge in the count-back to take the top spot in the flight.

Greg Ritchie had a day to remember in the second division, winning the B Flight with a net 63 off his 20 H/cap and along the way recording his first ever hole in one, coming at the 155-yard par-three 6th hole. Brian Orr took the runner up spot in the division some way behind on net 76.

A Flight
1st Nick Toon (0) net 71
2nd Graham Beaumont (11) net 71
B Flight
1st Greg Ritchie (20) net 63
2nd Brian Orr (13) net 76
Friday, Oct. 1, Green Valley - Stableford

Thirteen Caddyshack golfers played at a wet Green Valley course off the white tees on Friday, the layout playing all of its 6,309 yards with little or no run on the fairways.

Ted Gardner topped the A Flight on 35 points, edging Arch Armstrong on count-back.

Brian Orr had the top score of the day (38pts) to win the B Flight ahead of Ben Findon just the one point back in second.

Peter Henderson and James Savage split the ‘2’s pot between them.

A Flight
1st Ted Gardner (7) 35pts
2nd Arch Armstrong (8) 35pts
B Flight
1st Brian Orr (13) 38pts
2nd Ben Findon (19) 37pts

Note: The Caddyshack is situated in Soi 8 Threppasit, just follow the soi to the old English style bar/restaurant/hotel. We play golf twice a week, Wednesday and Friday, until the punters return then we play on Mondays also. We can also arrange golf outside these days and have a notice board with future venues and an entry list. Email [email protected] for more information.

JJ signs off in style

PSC golf from The Bunker

Monday, Sept, 27, Khaow Keow - Stableford

Millionaire’s golf today as we found ourselves to be the only golfers on the course. Although we drove through a heavy shower of rain on the way to the course, the weather when we arrived was bright and sunny, and remained that way for the duration of the round.

Geoff Parker, left, with the September golfer of the month JJ Harney.

Always a tough test of golf, we played the B and C nines, and although some maintenance work is being done, the course was generally in good shape.

JJ continued his run of good form, particularly on the par 3’s, almost making a clean sweep, but Mark West managed to take one. Mark and JJ finished level on 34 points, with Mark taking first place on the count-back.

Near pin winners were Mark West and JJ with three.

After the round we all enjoyed the free beer in the clubhouse, provided as part of the current promotion, certainly an excellent way to round off a great day’s golf.

1st Mark West (16) 34pts
2nd JJ Harney (12) 34pts
3rd Geoff Parker (15) 32pts
Wednesday, Sept. 29, Green Valley - Stableford

A good turnout for Green Valley for what was to be the final shootout for the Golfer of the Month title between Geoff Parker and JJ Harney. Both were level on 56 points going into the final game, however the battle never really materialized, with Geoff struggling from the first hole, and JJ continuing his current steady form.

Reg Smart has returned to form after his 75th birthday party last week and proved to be JJ”s biggest rival on the day, eventually losing on a count-back after missing an 18 inch putt on the 18th green. Well done Reg, and on current form you might manage to keep your handicap down to a bit less than half your age!

Near pins went to Geoff Parker, Mashi and JJ with two.

JJ also provided food for all the golfers back at the Bunker, as well as traditionally ringing the bell. Congratulations JJ, enjoy your trip back to Ireland, and maybe someone else can have a chance of winning next month.

1st JJ Harney (12) 35pts
2nd Reg Smart (27) 35pts
Friday, Oct. 1, The Emerald - Stableford

First game of a new month, and a small field headed out to Bang Chang. The weather was good and the course was in good shape, but no one managed to better their handicap on the day.

Unusually, there was a 3-way tie for first place, with the Japanese duo of Mashi and Homma taking first and second respectively, and Geoff Parker losing out following a blob on the 18th hole.

Near pin winners were John Graham, Homma and Peter Habgood.

Back in the clubhouse we watched the rain lashing down at the Ryder Cup, and felt real sympathy for all our friends back in the U.K. before heading off to Bang Chang - just another day in paradise.

1st Mashi Kaneta (10) 34pts
2nd Homma (15) 34pts
3rd Geoff Parker (15) 34pts

Voller tastes double success

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, Sept. 27, Century Chonburi – Stableford

A contingent of golfers went to Kanchanaburi to play four rounds over six days so numbers were down this past week here in Jomtien.

The winning 1-2-3 stableford team at Emerald: Mikael Andersson, Chris Voller and Mark West.

Today’s course is not everyone’s cup of tea but we get reasonable turnouts every four weeks that we visit here. The course was deserted as we arrived (as with most at present times) and our four groups got out just before our allocated tee time. Conditions were slightly damp and with no run on the fairways it was set up to be a good test today.

The best score of the day was 34 points to win division 1 for Frank Kelly, while the optician from Luxembourg, Georges Faber, took second one point behind Frank, and beating Alan Maxwell on a 16/15 back nine count-back.

Ben Findon’s 32 points was enough to take division 2 honours with ‘count-back’ Burnie in second place on 31 (many thanks to Burnie for organizing the golf here in Jomtien this past week).

Mam Morel was smiling again as she won the ladies division with 28 points.

Colin Bradwell birdied the 17th and Jean Morel the 4th to share the ‘2’s pot in division 1 and a rollover ensued in division 2 to the Emerald.

Wednesday, Sept. 29, The Emerald – Stableford

As always, the last Wednesday of the month is our fun game, this time an individual stableford competition for three divisions plus a team 1-2-3- contest. There were 8 three-ball teams signed up the previous evening but as we approached the course there was still one no show back at Siam Cats. In the end there were just seven teams out and two players still in the normal competition.

Similar to Monday it was damp conditions here but with buggies allowed on the fairways at a 90 degree angle there was no ‘pick, clean and place’ ruling in use. There were many remarks back in the clubhouse afterwards regarding how tough the course was today and this was reflected in the scores in division 2.

Playing off 19, ‘count-back’ Burnie won the second flight with just 31 points. Ben Findon came in second one point behind Burnie, beating Richard Kings on a 14/12 back nine count-back.

Kari Kuparinen has returned to us now with a 4 handicap and he finished third in division 1 with 33 points. Chris Voller (7) lost out on a 20/18 count-back to Mark West (13) after they both finished with 36 points. Well done Mark!

Noi Emmerson took the ladies title with 29 points.

There were no .2’s in all three divisions so the rollover continued at Green Valley on Monday. Near pins today went to Mam Morel, Kari Kuparinen (2), Mikael Andersson, Alan Bissell, Richard Kings and Georges Faber.

In the team competition the lowest score today was 55 points, and in the prizes in third place with 64 were Mam Morel, Georges Faber and Jean Morel. In second place came Bryan Rought, Burnie Sinclair and William Chang on 68, but the winners today with 77 points were Mikael Andersson, Chris Voller and Mark West.

Friday, Oct. 1, Eastern Star – Stableford

We were lucky with the weather this week as we seemed to miss all the rain that everyone else encountered in various locations. Here at Eastern Star we were introduced to the new course management team who hope to improve the greens and the rest of the course as soon as possible.

There was only one division out today in the stableford contest and improving each week after his trip back to the US is Tom Sathrum who finished third here with 31 points. Ya Riley came in second one point ahead of Tom and Chris Voller took the win with 33 points.

What a surprise, there were no ‘2’s in division 2 but three in division 1, from Mikael Andersson,Ya Riley and Chris Voller.

There was a warm welcome given to Harry Riley after his return from the UK following several months away.

Arnold on the march

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

Once again Mother Nature looked fondly down on the Three Sisters Group, providing beautiful golfing weather. The course at Pattaya Country Club on this Sep. 29th was in good shape but due to overnight rain it was quite soggy. Some greens were still showing patchwork in anticipation of the PCC upcoming tournament. These patches are not a problem as they qualify as Ground under Repair (GUR).

Winner Arnold Van der Graffe, left, with runner-up Sus Ige.

Despite the soggy turf some nice scores came in: Arnold Van der Graffe showed up with a very nice 42 points followed by Sus Ige with a 40. Not far behind were Dale Murphy (36pts) and Larry Emerson (35pts). This being the end of the Month for Three Sisters, Arnold wins the trophy and has his name engraved on it.

The usual post golf goodies were provided by Herbie and adequate beverages seemed to be on hand.

Kalani blitz at Green Valley

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Monday, Sept. 27, Green Valley - Monthly Medal
1st Kalani Makaneole, net 69
2nd Keith Worboys, net 70
3rd Henry O’Brien, net 71
John Dearden, net 71

Kalani Makaneole.

Twenty-six players joined us today for our regular Monthly Medal comp. The man on form today was the sweet swinging Hawaiian Kalani: big drives and bigger putts led to a net 69. We sure could have used him for Team North America last week against the European squad.

Keith Worboys found a short game and was second with net 70 while the ‘steady one’ Henry O’Brien was third with net 71, narrowly taking John Dearden on the dreaded count-back.

Welcome back today to McQ and Terry Wagner, another swinger from Hawaii!

Wednesday, Sept. 29, Siam Plantation A & B – Stableford
1st Mick Beresford (23) 37pts
2nd Nigel Flanagan (12) 33pts
3rd Martin Zimmerman (15) 33pts

Sixteen players started the day dry and then were chased to shelter on the back nine. A tremendous amount of rain and lightning caused a 1 hour delay. Lightning even struck one of the shelters causing some to jump and caddies to squeal. When play resumed Mick Beresford came home the overall winner - a first for Mick. A bell ring was graciously received.

Flanagan and Zimmerman did battle on the back nine with Flanagan taking second on count back.

Friday, Oct. 1, Greenwood A & B – Stableford
1st Mick Beresford (23) 37pts
2nd Mark Wood (9) 36pts
3rd John Bahng (13) 35pts

What a day for Mick Beresford - two wins on the trot. He was smashing the ball off the tee and inviting his playing opponents to “come and join him up here”. Needless to say he won the game within the game.

Mark Wood, having just returned from offshore, gathered his land legs and had a fine 36 points for second. Guess who were partners in the game within the game? We didn’t stand a chance in our match. Long John Bahng missed a few short putts and finished third on 35 points.

Graham doubles up, Samrit gets the cash

PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Tuesday, Sept. 28, Green Valley - Stableford

Tuesday was a visit to Rayong Green Valley, where the course again was in top condition, with smooth well grassed fairways and true rolling greens. Even the weather looked after us, despite threatening with a few spots around about Hole 7.

Thursday’s winners: Jimmy Fortune, left, Graham Hiskett, right, and Samrit (Graham’s wife) - guess who got the cash!

Graham Hiskett (14) continued his recent good form to lead the way home with a strong 39 points, heading off the consistent Jeff Wylie (6) with 37 points, while in third spot, with 32 points, was Ed Horrocks (24).

Near Pins were spread around between Graham, Jeff & Brian, while one went unclaimed, resulting in a donation to the Banglamung Boys Home.

Thursday, Sept. 30, Bangpakong - Stableford

Thursday dawned and we had a booking at Bangprakong Riveside C.C., following an earlier successful visit we had decided to make a return. Again the course was in good order, despite the first 7 holes being cored and sanded, the rest were fine. Fairways here are in condition the equal to, or better than any of the courses in the area.

Graham Hiskett (14) again was to the fore, recording a solid 38 points, followed home by Jim Fortune (28) with 35 points, who recorded his best ever 9 hole score of 20 on the front 9.

Near Pins were again shared around with Graham, Jim, Dave and Jeff each getting one each.

Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday and Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc, please call Jeff 089 094 1841 or Ray 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!

Makara makes light of tough going at Bangpra

PSC golf from Café Kronborg

San Mig Stu

Monday, Sept. 27, Bangpra - Stableford

We welcomed the following players who joined us today: Gordon Clegg, Barry Collier and Graham Faithfull from England and Patrick Pollssier from France. We also welcomed back Bernie Seagrave who was finally presented his monthly pewter mug from two or so months ago.

Monday winners Owen Walkley and Andy Makara with ‘The Admiral’.

It appears that either the high season has started already or Caf้’ Kronborg is becoming more popular as there were 27 starters for today’s outing at Bangpra. Of course the numbers could also have been up due to the venue? Regardless of the reason, the sun was shining, the rain stayed away and the monkeys behaved themselves - although a few had to be threatened off some golf carts.

Our first group teed off on time completed their round in four hours and fifty minutes, which included a couple of drinks stops. The course was very busy with grounds staff mowing and carrying out repairs which had been postponed due to wet weather. The adjacent lake/reservoir appeared to be as high as it has ever been which indicates how much water has fallen in recent times.

Given that the majority of fairways and the rough were longer than normal and there was very little run, it is not surprising that only one player managed to break par. Andy Makara had a very good round to post 42 points and take out B Flight, followed by Graham Buckingham with a solid turnaround from last Thursday’s game to score 33 points. In third was Patrice Poussier, also with 33 points, but losing on a count-back. Fourth place went to Ken Bernek on 32 and Dave Richardson came fifth with 31.

A Flight was won by Owen Walkley with 35 points ahead of Mike Allidi (32pts) in second and Stu Rifkin in third on 31 points. Ted Morris took fourth on a count-back over Paul Avery.

One of our most consistent players was today’s recipient for the Compass Cap charity award. Takeshi Hakozaki was obviously off his normal game but never-the-less genuinely pleased to be able to donate today and we thank you Takeshi for your generous donation.

A Flight (0–17)
1st Owen Walkley (15) 35pts
2nd Mike Allidi (3) 32pts
3rd Stu Rifkin (14) 31pts
4th Ted Morris (12) 30pts
5th Paul Avery (10) 30pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Andy Makara (35) 42pts
2nd Graham Buckingham (23) 33pts
3rd Patrice Poussier (20) 33pts
4th Ken Bernek (19) 32pts
5th Dave Richardson (24) 31pts

: No.9 Takeshi Hakozaki, No.18 Mikito Homma

Thursday, Sept. 30, Plutaluang - Stableford.

Twenty golfers headed to the Plutaluang to do battle with the North and South nines. As most would be aware, this golf club has two sets of eighteen holes with the East and West nines making up the 36 total. Having so many holes to maintain can become a bit of a nightmare for the grounds staff, especially when the rains hold up mowing. This in turn becomes a nightmare for the players as the rough grows so long that even slightly wayward balls become well hidden/lost and shots which ordinarily would be playable become lost shots.

Given the lack of mowing and heavy going, there was only one person who managed to shoot better than his handicap today and that was Mikito Homma.

A notable shot of the day was performed by Paul Avery who discarded his right shoe so as to stand in the water and successfully play his partially submerged ball out of the water hazard on the South 6th hole.

Congratulations also to Ted Morris for finally breaking his hoodoo and landing his ball on the lighthouse island green on the first attempt!

Ken Bernek was proudly showing off his new Calloway driver prior to hit off and he used it to great effect on his first outing. Unfortunately his chipping and putting did him no favors other than to help him donate to the Compass Cap worthy charity bin, which now spills over the five thousand baht mark. Thanks Ken for your donation and we hope your short game improves.

We also took the opportunity today to welcome back Gordon Clegg from the UK.

With the now accepted regular afternoon storms showing themselves during September we were all pleased to finish our rounds in under four and a half hours without getting wet, despite thunder (pha laep) all around.

Showers, lunch and presentations were concluded in good time and all of us who were busing it back to the Kronborg were looking forward to getting back earlier than anticipated. That was until Murphy stuck his bit in! Boons bus decided to get a flat tire five minutes after leaving the clubhouse and as Boon is the senior driver, bus two had to also stop and its driver assist change the spare wheel. Any hope of extra time at ones favorite bar/go go bar was soon dispelled!

A reminder to all Caf้ Kronborg players (and indeed all PSC members) that proper golf attire should be worn, in keeping with all clubhouse rules and PSC rule number 7, which states “Players should be ‘Properly Attired’ both during play and in the clubhouse in a shirt with sleeves and collar and tailored trousers or shorts.” Please note that T shirts are not acceptable attire.

A Flight (0–15)
1st Mikito Homma (15) 37pts
2nd Owen Walkley (15) 35pts
3rd Kike Gosden (11) 34pts
4th Martin Todd (7) 32pts
B Flight (16+)
1st Walter Baechli (17) 35pts
2nd Elias Magnussen (18) 33pts
3rd Les Hall (17) 31pts
4th Mike Winfield (20) 31pts

Mr. ‘2’ is now Mr. ‘1’

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Barry Hooper

For many weeks now I have been making reference to “Mr. 2” when writing about Ted Senior (I am not sure how many ‘2’s he has taken). Well I am happy to report that this past week he became “Mr.1” after his comprehensive win at Phoenix on Thursday by two clear points over second placed man Ito Akitoshi.

Martin Zimmerman (Saturday’s winner), Amphan North (Saturday third place) and “Mr.1” Ted Senior (Thursday’s winner).

We have had many players who are always thereabouts in the placings but never seem to get that essential break for the top spot. Well Done Ted, you made it.

Another player that most definitely deserves a mention this week is Martin Zimmerman. He has played with us many times but he admitted that he pulled out his best ever game here in Thailand to take the win on Saturday at Emerald. He did that with his forty-four pointer. This was a full two ahead of Roger Wilkinson who had yet another second placing (he seems to have had many of those of late). One must say that the conditions on the day (delayed for rain and a wet course, need I say more) were not very favourable it would have seemed for high scores. But the top four places were all thirty-eight points up. So the conditions did not put them off it seems.

This week we only had two full events after Mondays planned visit to Bangpra was washed out before it started. On Tuesday the numbers were drastically reduced after the continued promise of more bad weather so it was decided to have a non competition day and keep it as social golf by all parties involved.

Thursday, Sept. 30, Phoenix (Lakes & Ocean) - Stableford
1st Ted Senior (14) 37pts
2nd Ito Akitoshi (8) 35pts
3rd Roger Wilkinson (14) 35pts
4th Tewin Lamthong (11) 33pts

Thursday was a visit to our usual venue of Phoenix and as always a fair group made the journey to enjoy the attributes of this great course.

As reported above, Ted Senior got the win ahead of Ito Akitoshi in second and Roger Wilkinson in third. Tewin Lamthong took the final podium place with 33 points.

Three 2’s on the day came from Ito Akitoshi, Tewin Lamthong and Fergus Brennan.

Saturday, Oct. 2, The Emerald – Stableford
1st Martin Zimmerman (15) 44pts
2nd Roger Wilkinson (14) 42pts
3rd Amphan North (9) 38pts
4th Ted Senior (14) 38pts

Saturday’s planned outing was again it seemed to be threatened by the weather however some of the hardier of our players decided to venture out to Emerald and risk it. There was a considerable downpour early in the round forcing delay but play resumed after a short while and as I reported earlier some good scores came in.

So the week ended relatively successful after a bad start.

Two 2’s were recorded by Amphan North and Martin Zimmerman

Note: If you want any further or fuller information about the golf outings played by the TRGG from the Travellers Rest Hotel, please contact the hotel manager Tewin Lamthong on 086 056 7019 or just call in to the Travellers Rest in Soi LK Metro, Pattaya and look at the notice board or visit our website at www.trgg.biz.

Warberg win secures monthly title

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Derek Brook

Tuesday, Sept. 28, Pattana – Stableford

So off to Pattana we went. These days all the courses are soaking wet, and as usual at this time of the year it is time to get out the super glue on the spikes. There must be a set of spikes around that do not fall apart in the rain.

Gez Tracy, left, presents The Alan Bolton Golfer of the Month prize to Dick Warberg.

Fortunately on this day, while it was pouring down in Pattaya, we got around the eighteen holes without it raining, although the course itself was wet and we could not use carts off the paths. The greens were not too bad though and we all managed to get around with reasonable scores

The changing rooms here are probably the best anywhere and the clubhouse is second to none, a real top line golf facility. Sitting in the restaurant the views are stunning, and it is a real treat of a day out. Well worth a visit and the food is good also, if not cheap. With the superb facilities one must expect to pay a little more, but not much, and we all enjoyed our trip out.

Back at Bert’s all the players were reminded that this was the end of the month and thus the Alan Bolton Golfer of the Month winner would be declared and at the beginning of the day all was open, so the results on the day were very important.

The winner today was Dick Warberg with 37 points, with Mikito Homma in second place on 35 points and Mashi Kenata in third with 34 points. We then had a seven-way count-back on 32 points that saw Frank Pilkington in fourth.

Near Pins went to P.S. Basi, Walter Bachli, Dick Warberg and Mike O’Brien.

So, with his win on the day, Dick Warbeg slid in as the Alan Bolton Property Consultants Golfer of the Month for September. Well done Dick! T.T.F.N.

Irish boys have too much power

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday, Sept. 5, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Barry Copestake (18) 40 42pts
2nd Benn Nelson (14) 39pts

Nothing subtle about the claim for this title slot: Barry ‘The Boot’ Copestake’, who to date had never quite found his top form in numerous vacations to the Land of Smiles, wanted to elevate any doubt in the societies mind when he did find it. Does a 42 point effort catch your attention? Well it was best on the day in a somewhat depleted field as a fair portion of the gang readied themselves for a four day road trip to the Lewiinski’s golf festival in Hau Hin.

Hua Hin flight winners: Seamus Cotter, left, and Christy Knight.

Benn ‘The Admiral’ Nelson took no time to settle in as he fired a 39 point opener for second (welcome back Benn).

Jim Brackett has always been envied for his accurate iron play, which was again in force as he pocketed three of the four near pins. The Good Captain Seamus claimed the last near pin.

Mentioning good guys it is always a pleasure to have Gerry ‘the Irish Rover’ Power playing with the gang, a big welcome back Gerry.

Tuesday, Sept. 28, Springfield Hua Hin - Stableford
A Flight
1st Seamus Cotter (12) 40pts
2nd Colin Davis (14) 34pts
B Flight
1st Christy Knight (21) 40pts
2nd Jim Bell (21) 36pts

The Lewiinski’s three day golf festival in Hua Hin began at the Jack Nicklaus designed Springfield Golf Course. The course was in excellent condition, and the weather was fine.

As one would expect it was the good Captain Seamus who led the field home in the senior division with a splendid 40 points. Colin ‘the Donkey’ Davis continued his run of good form to take the silver.

The junior flight was not to be outdone as Christy Knight matched the Captain’s card to win the day, leaving Jim ‘Houdini’ Bell to round out the flight with an even par round. Don’t them Irish boys travel well!

Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas was on song as he pocketed a healthy ‘2’s pot.

Wednesday, Sept. 29, Banyan Hua Hin - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pierre Bietry (16) 43pts
2nd Jimmy Day (14) 39pts
B Flight
1st Christy Knight (21) 45pts
2nd Barry Elphick (22) 39pts

After finding a hotel with a small bed for Jimmy (or was it Jamie), the Irish contingent were up and ready to continue their assault on the leader board. The course was the spectacular Banyan golf club which has been voted in the top four golf clubs in Thailand.

Pierre ‘the Magician’ Bietry claimed the top prize in A Flight with a majestic 43 points. Co. Wicklow’s favorite son Jimmy in a ‘Daze’ fashioned a solid 39 points for the silver.

The laurels in B Flight went to Christy ‘Good’ Knight who played out of his skin, carding an unbelievable 45 points; let’s hope Christy keeps it up as his new handicap will require it. Christy’s score made Barry Elphick’s fine 39 points look a bit mediocre.

Pierre Bietry, Jimmy Day, Yui Bietry, Norman Oderman and Mike Jefferies split the ‘2’s pot.

Back at the digs the donkey promptly gave Christy and Pierre sizeable handicap cuts.

Thursday, Sept. 30, Black Mountain - Stableford
A Flight
1st Jimmy Day (14) 39pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (16) 37pts
B Flight
1st Jim Bell (21) 37pts
2nd Christy Knight (17) 34pts

The final day and another fantastic golf course lay in wait for the Lewiinski’s gang.

B Flight had the bragging rights yesterday but A Flight stole them back on this day, and the man they sent to do it was the Co. Wicklow man Jimmy Day, as he nailed another 39 point round. That is routinely surrounded by a brace of over handicap disasters. If he ever (or any of us, for that matter) ever adds consistency to his bag of tricks his handicap will quickly plummet. Jimmy was followed by the fine 37 points of Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby.

Jim Houdini Bell won the senior flight with a solid 37 points. Christy ‘Good’ Knight took the silver despite a four shot handicap trim.

Francis Goyons and Seamus Cotter split the ‘2’s pot.

The presentation was held at Lewinski’s the following night, when everyone returned to Pattaya. The presentation was held after the superb buffet that was laid on by the management and staff.

Overall winner with a combined three day score of 36.3 in A Flight was Seamus Cotter. Second place went to Pierre Bietry with 35.3 while in third place was Jimmy Day on34.3.

B Flight was won by Christy Knight with a staggering three day average of 39.66. In Second place was Jim Bell with 34.66 and third was Marnie Kregon on 32.

The trip was a great success, and the next one is eagerly awaited.

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. ransport is provided.

‘Broken Wing’ storms to easy win at Emerald

The Backyard Golf Society

Dave R., a.k.a. ‘Broken Wing’, with the staff at Mama’s Bar.

This week was the second official round of golf for the newly named Backyard Golf Society. We had yet another good turn-out at Emerald Golf Course with nine players in all competitions. After the course suffered a deluge of rain the night before, the “clean and place” rule on the fairways came into effect.

As seen from the headline, Dave R. had an easy win in the stableford competition with 37 points, and, keeping it in the family, Dangle took the nearest the pin prize.

Alan B. cleaned up in the skins with (10) and the other skins went to Terry C. (3), Andy Oz (2), Martyn (2) and Dan (1). Just a quick mention to confirm that Dangle has the top three in the scratch competition with totals of 12, 10 and 9.

After prize giving it was off to Mama’s Bar, where yet again a lot of bell ringing occurred. Remember your t-shirts guys!

Tilley & Kimber the standout stars at Burapha

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Joey’s column

Monday, Sept. 27, Burapha - Stableford

Burapha as usual today with 30 Outbackers starting on the C course and finishing on D from the white tees. The greens, whilst not lightning fast, were in great condition as always but carts were not permitted on the fairways as they have had storms everyday, so the local rule of preferred lies (on the fairways) was brought into effect. Although there was heavy rain reported around Pattaya we were fortunate to get in before the rains reached the course.

Suzi Lawton, winner of Div B at Khao Kheow on Friday, with the Div A winner, Murray Hart.

The Capt’ had a bad day, as per usual of late, finishing last in division A after a late night and there were one or two scores in Div B that were no better. However, the top boys excelled with Mike Tilley winning Div B on 42 points, five clear of Bruce McAdam with 37.

Div A went to one of the Aussie visitors, Clinton Kimber with a fine 41 points followed in by Briany Christie (39pts) playing off five.

Other notables include Jon Lay (38pts) and Lawrie McBride (37pts) taking third and fourth in Div A with Ivan Plunkett and John O’Keefe filling the minor places in Div B, both with 34.

There were four ‘2’s from Mike Tilley, Jim Brackett, Doug Campbell and John Lay.

1st Clinton Kimber (14) 41pts
2nd Briany Christie (5) 39pts

4th Lawrie McBride (13) 37pts
Div B (16+)
1st Mike Tilley (18) 42pts

4th John O’Keefe (18) 34pts
Monday, Sept. 27, Green Valley - Stableford

Today Green Valley hailed the return of alternate Mondays for the Outback Golf Bar, which proved so popular a couple of months back. Eighteen golfers played but only two shot better than their handicap, the reason may have been that the greens had just been verticut making the roll of the ball a little uncertain. This is necessary maintenance for golf courses to keep their reputation as a good course that people want to play, unfortunately some courses choose to wait until it is too late and start losing their greens. This has not been the case of Green Valley.

The golfer of the day was John Cogan shooting 39 points off his 18 H/cap followed by the day’s organiser, Joe Mooneyham, with 37 points off 14. The third, fourth and fifth places were all decided on count-back with three players on 33 points, headed by Paul Bourke.

It also should be noted that all players finished under four hours and most of the field walked! Even George Bishop who was in the second group decided to walk today in trying to shed some weight. Well done George!

There were two ‘2’s today coming from Murray Hart & Joe Mooneyham.

Note: Our thanks go to Joe for picking up the reins where he left off, organising the Monday alternates which are to remain here at Green Valley at least until December but we hope into next year as well.

1st John Cogan (18) 39pts
2nd Joe Mooneyham (14) 37pts
3rd Paul Bourke (10) 33pts
4th Steve Milne (13) 33pts
5th Andy Butterworth (12) 33pts
Tuesday, Sept. 28, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

It was a fine Tuesday morning when the 18 Outbackers made their way the short distance from the Outback to Pattaya C.C., following a good breakfast at the bar for many. It was a welcome back to Barry McIntosh and Mike Tilley (both in the frame) and those returning from Ryder Cup duty.

Booking in as usual was quick and easy then we were off.

Two groups escaped the rain completely, one just had rain on the 18th and the last two had to shelter at the 13th & 16th drink stops for about how long it takes to drink a couple of beers! Organiser Chad was in the last group, so we had a little time to wait for him to calculate the results.

Top spot today went to Mike Tilley (16) after a ‘steward’s enquiry’ was declared with a revised 37 points. Second was ‘General Jack’ – Jack Moseley - enjoying his usual Tuesday game, with no organising responsibilities and 35 points. Barry MacIntosh (18) was third on 33 points and regular Outbackers and friends, Frank O’Neill (20) and Nigel Cannon (24) both came in with 32 points with Frank taking fourth with a better back nine.

There was just one ‘2’ from PCC member Nigel Cannon.

The Outback are at Pattaya Country Club each Tuesday with a booked tee time of 9.30 a.m.

Note: Messrs Alan, Les, Don & Brian all signed up as a four-ball using just their first names. Looking at their scores we can see why – no, only joking! We discovered who three of you were, not sure about Alan. Please fill out your cards properly, complete with full name, handicap, date and PSC number if you have one. It does make everybody’s job a lot easier, and after all, that’s why we are all here, for an easy life.

1st Mike Tilley (16) 37pts
2nd Jack Moseley (12) 35pts
3rd Barry McIntosh (18) 33pts
4th Frank O’Neill (20) 32pts
5th Nigel Cannon (24) 32pts
Wednesday, Sept. 29, Crystal Bay - Stableford

Playing the B and A loops, the 19 Outbackers all got away on time with no hold ups throughout the round. The course was in good condition considering the amount of rain we have had over the last few weeks but wet in places and strange that the management allowed the carts on the course. Perhaps on reflection we should have permitted the ‘lift and place’ local rule as the ball was often covered in mud but as is sometimes the case we didn’t realise until after we had teed off. Somehow we got round without any rain but as we sat down for a beer and a bite in the clubhouse, it absolutely hammered down.

Welcome today to my good friend back from England, Chaten Patel, and great to see Jack Spencer, Div A winner with 38 points, come and have a hit with us. Capt’ Bob, off his dodgy 10 H/cap, had the same score to take second, ahead of Kerry Beck in third with 36. Div B was won by Mike Tilley (his third win in as many days) also with 38, and he loses two more shots off his handicap, down to 14.

There were no ‘2’s.
Div A (0-15)
1st Jack Spencer (8) 38pts
2nd Bob Philp (10) 38pts
3rd Kerry Beck (9) 36pts
4th Chaten Patel (14) 32pts
Div B (16+)
1st Mike Tilley (16) 38pts
2nd Jeff Clarkson (25) 32pts
3rd Graham Fletcher (23) 31pts
4th Keith Allen (17) 30pts
Friday, Oct. 1, Khao Kheow - Stableford

One could support the theory that the PSC handicap committee, who have rated many of the local courses, have got it wrong; maybe the courses are not as tough as they think and maybe everybody’s handicap is too low. However, if that were true, most players who tackled the Khao Kheow B & C nines would need their handicap to go up about six shots or more judging by the generally poor scores here today.

Not one of the 32 Outbackers could make 36 points from tees that were well forward, except maybe Suzi Lawton, who would have had 36 had she played off her correct H/cap of 16 and not made to play off two less (14), as she is here (at Khao Kheow) when playing in the same competition as the men.

Suzi won her division (Div B) with 34 points ahead of Mike Tilley, who ends a good week of golf with a new handicap of 14, whilst one of our San Francisco friends, Chris Muselman, squeezed into third place with just 31. His mate, Jesse, took third place in Div C with 30 points behind Sid Ottaway (31pts) and the winner, Ivan Plunkett (33pts).

The other top score of the day came from Murray Hart with 34 points to take the premier division two ahead of Jim Brackett, with the big hitting Kev Watson three further back on 29.

There were six ‘2’s from Ivan Plunkett, Jim Brackett, Steve Mann, Jesse Serna, Chris Muselman & Steve Milne.

Div A (0-13)
1st Murray Hart (12) 34pts
2nd James Brackett (7) 32pts
3rd Kevin Watson (7) 29pts
Div B (14-18)
1st Suzi Lawton (14) 34pts
2nd Mike Tilley (14) 33pts
3rd Chris Muselman (18) 31pts
Div C (19+)
1st Ivan Plunkett (20) 33pts
2nd Sid Ottaway (24) 31pts
3rd Jesse Serna (36) 30pts

Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or give Bob a call on 087 941 2474.

Schwarz sizzler takes Super-Seniors title

September Diana Seniors and Lady’s Open

Nigel Cannon

The last Thursday of the month, Sept. 30, saw twenty nine Seniors and Ladies arriving at Pattaya Country Club to play in the monthly Diana Seniors and Ladies Open.

September winners, left-right: Morton Guaslaa, Amphon Phuiphon and Werner Schwarz.

Following the rain the previous two days it was ‘pick and place’ on the fairway with buggies kept on the cart paths. As is usual for this competition, all arrived early, booked in, registered and were away well before time. The course was very wet in places with water in some bunkers.

Just 5 ladies today but it was good to see one of the ‘high handicap’ ladies coming to the fore with – Amphon Phuiphon winning with 33 points. Runner-up was regular Pimusa Tonkhoksoong with 32 points.

The Seniors winner was another regular, Morton Guaslaa with 36 points. Just a point behind was Kenneth Johansson with 35 points.

The ‘Super Senior’ winner – just a ‘Super’ having reached 65 and playing the first time in this section after playing many times as a ‘Senior’ - was Werner Schwarz with the best of the day 41 points. Just 2 behind was our ‘scorer’ Alan Pearce with 39 points.

All scores are submitted to Pattaya Sports Club.

The October Diana Seniors and Ladies open will be held on Thursday 28th at Pattaya Country Club with a tee time of 0900. Sign up sheets are at the Diana Green Bottle 2nd road and the Diana Driving range.

Bridge in Paradise: by Neil Robinson

Imagine that you are sitting North, you deal and hold the hand below.  North-South are vulnerable.  What would you bid?

S: A

H: A54

D: AKQ10542

C: A8

Total high card points are 21, not quite enough to open the strong artificial 2C bid in most systems.  On the other hand, you have ten tricks in hand - seven diamonds and the three outside aces.  You might in principle lose a trick to the guarded jack of diamonds, but with only six diamonds out between the other three hands this possibility seems sufficiently improbable to ignore at this stage.  Even if there is a guarded jack out there, it may be finesseable.

With ten quick tricks and so many high card points, every system that I am aware of allows this to be opened 2C.  Your partner has eleven high card points, so will certainly give you a positive response, whatever that is in the system you play.  All you need to know now is whether your partner has three tricks, in any suit, to cover the only three losing cards in your hand.

You can start by asking for aces by bidding 4N.  Obviously this is a formality, since you already know you have all the aces, but it allows you then to ask for kings by bidding 5N.  Your partner replies that he has two kings.  Now, you can count at least twelve tricks, your ten plus partner’s two kings.  You are playing duplicate for match points, so making the extra points from a no trump contract versus a suit contract may be critical.  Now what do you bid?

The answer appears to be a choice between a guaranteed 6N - you know that you have twelve top tricks - or a slightly more risky 7N, thinking that your partner’s positive response to your opening 2C bid must surely include at least one useful queen to give you that thirteenth trick.

So what did you choose, 6N, 7N, or ??  The full deal is shown below:

                      S: A

                      H: A54

                      D: AKQ10542

                      C: A8

S: J832                               S: K1094

H: 106                                H: 73

D: J9                                   D: 73

C: J7653                            C: Q10942

                      S: Q765

                      H: KQJ982

                      D: 86

                      C: K

As you can see, you have sixteen tricks available, seven diamonds, six hearts, the ace and king of clubs and the ace of spades, so a grand slam is a lay down.  The strange aspect is what happened at the table.  Of the six tables where this was played, there were four contracts of six diamonds, not even the lay down six no trump, and one contract of three no trump.  The actual bidding on this wonderful hand seemed strangely timid!

Mac leads English trio at Bangpra

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Bangpra on Tuesday, 28th September, to play a stableford competition on the popular course. The track was being set up for a major Thai competition the following day and so the white tees were well back and the greens, though not at their best, were still in better shape than most in the area, and quick.

After Pattana the previous week a storm break of thirty minutes three hours into the round gave the golfers chance to assess their chances of finishing well or otherwise. Remaining in with a shout right to the end was fourth placed Tony Thorne with 31 points, just one behind third placed Alan Maxwell who is “getting there”, in his own words. In his final round this trip London fireman Mark West racked up 34 points to take second place but Paul McNally was the man to beat at Bangpra again. His last round there had seem him amass 42 points and this time he fired a best gross of 77 to give him victory with 36 points. His frustration led him to recall later that he had three-putted five greens and so the opportunity to collect another forty point card had been lost.

Frenchman Olivier Tahon recorded the day’s only birdie ‘2’, on the seventeenth, and a hapless John Robertson took the Booby Bevy for recording the lowest ever competition score by the group and losing fifteen balls into the bargain! Never mind John, you can buy them back at the Monthly Medal next week!

For the PGS Bangpra once again was all about quality, from the moment one enters the clubhouse until the moment one exits the gates, especially with McNally in this form.

Lay shares Morel victory

The Pattaya Golf Society visited Rayong CC on Saturday, 2nd October to play a weekend stableford competition on a course thankfully softened by the recent heavy rains. On this occasion the course was full but the PGS still made good progress except for a short break for the omnipresent showers.

The day was competitive enough with Tony Thorne remaining in the frame with 31 points, sharing third place with Steve McGill who was making his first visit to the podium with PGS. There were joint winners on the day as Jon Lay huffed and puffed his way to the day’s best gross of 82 and 32 points for a share of the win with Jean Morel, for whom the course is one of his favourites.

There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to the newest IPGC recruit Aussie Tim Dale, a twelve handicapper who managed just sixteen points with an immaculate eight-eight split.

The day had been expertly marshalled by Tony Thorne in the absence of a babysitting Mr Len and it had been yet another fine golfing experience at the regular weekend course. But weekend golf is very much under notice as the Soi Buakhao based group prepares for a change of playing days to Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 1st November as it attempts to broaden the choice offered to IPGC golfers.

Rodney Hayes prepares for surgery

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, Sept. 27, Mountain Shadow (Blue Tees) - Team Scramble
1st Al Keith, Bob Lamond, Alan Pilkington, Chris Knapp (4.6) net 57.4
2nd Rodney Hayes, Mike Dabanovich, Trevor Schirmer, Stephen Beard (6.6) net 59.4
3rd Paul Smith, Tom Atkins, Bubbles Davies, Dave Knight (6.5) net 59.5
4th Russell Exley, Chris Voller, Mikael Andersson, Kazuo Takimoto (3.8) net 62.2

The once a month four person scramble came back to life following the cancellation of last month’s competition with a flurry of low scores, the best belonging to the winning team comprising Al, Bob, Alan and Chris, who carded a gross 62 which included ten birdies and eight pars to win by two clear shots.

Rodney Hayes.

As usual the format was teams of four with a handicap allowance of 15% uncapped and each player allowed a maximum of five tee shots, stroke play scoring.

Second best were Rodney, Mike, Trevor and Stephen with a gross 66 which included seven birdies but marred by an ugly bogie on the par three 17th but just squeezing into second with a 0.1 higher handicap ahead of Paul, Tom, Bubbles and Dave, who also had a gross 66.

Fourth spot went to Russell, Chris, Mikael and Takimoto who had the third gross 66 but with the day’s lowest handicap had to be content with a well played place only.

As usual prior to the prize giving, conducted by Russell Exley, everyone had a choice of any dish from the extensive Haven menu which was included in the entry fee.

Wednesday, Sept. 29, Greenwood – Stableford
CSS 72
1st Rodney Hayes (9) 39pts
2nd Russell Gilroy (18) 36pts
3rd Mike Dabanovich (10) 33pts
4th Russell Exley (7) 32pts
5th John Harris (15) 31pts
6th Roar Berger (26) 31pts

After so much rain over the recent weeks, it was a pleasant surprise to find the Greenwood course in such good shape, although preferred lies were once again in use as the ball was liable to collect a lot of mud in the fairways even though golf carts were allowed on the short mown areas.

Bob Lamond.

Rodney Hayes made light of the length with the tees set well back, in stark contrast to many previous visits to the course when the tees were set to afford a quick and easy round, as he kept it on the short grass the whole way round and then chipped like the single figure handicapper that he is, to claim yet another first place.

Russell Gilroy also made it look fairly straightforward with an effortless first round back in Thailand and an easy level par return for second place.

He was followed in by Mike Dabanovich, three back, in third with Russell Exley another shot away in fourth spot.

John Harris and Roar Berger got the honourable mentions with John edging the count back with a better 13 to 10 over the last six after he and Roar had tied the nine on 17 each.

In keeping with the difficulty of the course there were no 2’s in either division.

Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed back John Harris, Alec Woods, Ole Stamnes and Russell Gilroy.

Friday, Oct. 1, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Bob Lamond (5) 39pts
2nd Russell Gilroy (18) 39pts
3rd Rodney Hayes (9) 38pts
4th Rod Howett (26) 38pts
5th Russell Exley (7) 36pts

Bob Lamond started slowly and picked up speed over the inward half to return a gross 35 net 32 for 22 points and a fine three under total that took top spot. It still needed a count-back with Russell Gilroy, which he won with a better 22 to 20 score, to consign Russell to the second tier of the podium.

Rodney Hayes was once again to be found among the winners and his days scores added to the previous outing will result in another reduction in handicap down to 8 for the coming week’s events.

Rodney claimed third with a better count back of 22 to 15 over Rod Howett as Rod faded badly after an excellent outward half of three under handicap which had all the makings of a winning score until wayward shots spoiled a good card.

Russell Exley ended up with an honourable mention with a solid level handicap round in fifth place.

Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group you can contact mobile 084782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

200 Bowlers: Somrak and Joe.

Café Kronborg lost ground to VFW as they only managed to win one point from Sabai Friday. Jang Shaw was bowling by herself for Café Kronborg because one bowler is in the U.S. and Captain Kran Nielsen was a no show. Nok Kennedy bowled a 515 series for Sabai Friday.

Dang Downs bowled a 530 series and Antero Ronkainen had a 524 to lead Brother D to a four point sweep over House of the Golden Coin. Mio Aamlid bowled a 535 series for Golden Coin.

Canada won three points from Jack Tar as La Montgomery had a 515 series for Canada and Ooy Pluemkamon had a very good 554 for Jack Tar.

Noodle Russell bowled a 528 series to lead Green Tree to a three point win over the USMC team. Joe Ferral had a 201 game and 514 series for the Marines.
