Pattaya officials handed out 1,400 trees to local
residents as the city marked World Environment Day.
Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome presided over the June 3
event, two days before the official United Nations celebration to raise
awareness about environmental conservation, food shortages, energy
crises and population growth.
City workers joined staff of area hotels, the Naklua
Bay Conservation Group, students and teachers to plant trees. The city
made available 1,400 plants from 10 different species. The event also
featured a student photo exhibition.
Itthiphol said the event was a useful alert for
people to become more aware of environmental issues. People cannot think
such problems no longer affect them, he said. The mayor said everyone
needs to adjust their behavior and show more respect for the
environment.
Among the things people can do, Itthiphol added, are keeping their
property clean, recycling and not littering.
