Police listen intently to
NIB officials’ talks on terrorism-prevention training.

Following recent bombings and arrests of suspect
terrorists, National Intelligence Bureau officials came to Pattaya to
improve terrorism-prevention training for civil servants.
The Feb. 21 seminar at Pattaya City Hall opened by
Chonburi Gov. Khomsan Ekachai covered topics ranging from “mysterious”
phone calls to detection of suspicious parcels to handling suspected
mail bombs.
NIB trainers told bureaucrats that if they received a
threatening phone call, they should first evaluate the psychological
state of the caller and then inform law enforcement officials after
hanging up.
In the case of a suspicious parcel sent through the
mail, workers were warned to keep people away from the suspected bomb,
call police, do not try to examine or open the package or even move it.
Parcel carriers should always be regular postmen, officials said, and
regular security checks of mail facilities must be done.
Similar tactics must be employed if a suspicious bag
or other package is found. Again, trainers said, no one should touch the
suspected bomb and a barrier of layered tires can be built around it
until bomb squad experts arrive.
This and other advice was distributed was published
in manuals handed out to civil servants in attendance. The NIB can be
reached at 038-386-026-8.
