Tourist fears of falling coconuts prompted Pattaya
officials to give Jomtien beachfront trees a good trimming.
Twenty workers from the city Public Works Department
on Feb. 21 cut back branches and removed coconuts that tourists and
beach vendors feared would fall on their heads. The palm fronds also had
been blocking streetlights, giving more cover for criminals to operate
after dark.
Engineering Office Assistant Director Anont Rhaimanee
noted that the Jomtien cuts came shortly after vigorous tree trimming on
Pattaya Beach.
“I am delighted that Pattaya City is fixing this
issue,” said a beach vendor identified only as Jaew. “When there are
strong winds, the branches and coconuts fall off the trees, scaring the
tourists as they might be injured. Now tourists can feel assured about
their safety.”
Work was expected to be complete by March 2.
