United manager quits as Eastern Seaboard derby ends in stalemate

Staff Reporters
Pattaya United and Chonburi FC shared the spoils in a
keenly fought Eastern Seaboard derby match at the Institute of Physical
Education stadium in Chonburi last Sunday. The main talking point after the
game however was the decision of United manager and former coach Pansak
Ketwattha to quit his post, this following on from the recent resignation of
first team coach Jutaporn Pramolbal.
Pansak
Ketwattha.
Even though on paper the match was supposed to be a home
game for United, the fact that they are currently forced to play all their
hope fixtures in Chonburi due to stadium renovations meant that their
opponents had the majority of the spectator support. Despite this, it was
United who started the brighter against the inform ‘Sharks’ and they took
the lead in the match through a superb headed goal from their Japanese
import Hiroyuki Yamamoto, who connected with a free kick from Anuwat Inyin
to power the ball past Chonburi keeper Sunjin from the edge of the area.
Chonburi, chasing a win to keep them in touch with runaway leaders Buriram
PEA, piled on the pressure in the second half of the game and they were
rewarded with an equalizing goal from Ney Fabiano in the 70th minute. The
Brazilian striker latched onto a clever pass from Pipob On-mo on the edge of
the Pattaya penalty area to clinically dispatch a low left foot shot past
Narit.
Both teams were unable to add to the scoring during the remainder of the
match and neither side will be happy with a point as it leaves Chonburi
trailing Buriram by six points, albeit with a game in hand, while United are
still languishing in mid table and only five points away from the drop zone.
Immediately after the match, United manager Pansak Ketwattha announced that
he would be stepping down from his post as he wished to see the team
progress with a new man at the helm with fresh ideas. First team coach
Jutaporn Pramolbal had already resigned following pressure from both the
board and supporters after United failed to reach their target of a top six
position by the mid season break.
Taking over temporary charge of first team affairs will be Amnuay Singpring
from the backroom staff who will be assisted by defender and club captain
Niweat Siriwong.
With just a couple of more games to go until the half season break, the
United board will be frantically searching for someone with the right
credentials who can take the team forward.
Pattaya United’s next match is an away fixture against Army United on
Saturday, June 4 while Chonburi host Muang Thong United on the same day.

Fortt takes rookie race at Bira
Ben Fortt, centre, celebrates
his win in the 1000cc superbike rookie class event at Bira Circuit, Sunday,
May 29.
Local Pattaya teenager Ben Fortt, whose parents run the
Caddyshack Pub in town, was entered in the 1000cc superbike rookie class at
Bira Circuit last weekend, with Ben being the only local participant in the
race among riders from all around the Kingdom, and one team even from as far
away as Japan.
Ben managed to put in some impressive lap times on his GSXR Suzuki during
qualifying and started the race in second position on the grid. Taking pole
was a Kawasaki team, with the BMW and Honda teams lining up in third and
fourth respectively.
As the lights changed to green, Ben got the best start possible and led into
the first bend, closely followed by the BMW and Kawasaki riders. The Pattaya
youngster handled the pressure admirably and steadily increased his lead
over his rivals, eventually taking the chequered flag by a large margin over
the second placed BMW.
Ben had a large following of family and friends at Bira to watch him race,
including his team sponsor CEA, and he received a loud round of applause as
he stepped onto the podium to collect his well deserved trophy.

St. Andrews students put into practice their sporting skills
Primary students do battle on
the football field.
Ed Cary
St. Andrews School primary students recently participated
in a friendly sports competition that included swimming, tee-ball and
football. The Regents School, Pattaya were our hosts for the day and they
were also competing, as well as ISE and Garden International School.
Ready
to strike off in the tee-ball event.
St. Andrews did extremely well in tee-ball and in
football, but stole the show in the swimming with some amazing races. All
our athletes performed to the best of their ability demonstrating what
they’ve learned this year. Over the past few months our students have been
working very hard during training sessions, so it was good to see some great
outcomes, with an overall 1st place in swimming and some wins in football
and tee-ball.
One of the best aspects of the day was the fair play and sportsmanship shown
by all the teams. This allowed everyone to have fun whilst enjoying the
competitive spirit of the event.
In June our Primary sports teams will be flying off to Taipei in Taiwan to
compete in the FOBISSEA (Federation of British International Schools in
South-East Asia) event against other international schools from Hong Kong,
Malaysia and Taiwan. We wish them the best of luck!

Sumner doubles up
IPGC golf with the Pattaya Golf Society
The Pattaya Golf Society visited beautiful Bangpra on Monday, 23rd May to
play a stableford competition on the course which was well presented as
usual. The impact of low season saw only two English golfers in a
predominantly “down under” field and competition was tight for the bragging
rights.
Scores could not have been closer as Wichai Tananusorn continued in his
consistent form to post 34 points for fourth place, one behind new member
Aussie Tim Knight in third. In second was Masanori Takano on 36 points and
he used the occasion to sign off this trip in good style. The winner was
Pete Sumner with the day’s only sub-par round, 37, and his second
consecutive win with the Soi Buakhao based group.
There were no birdie ‘2’s on this occasion and the Booby Bevy went to Rob
Lamond, a rare feat, after his round ended sadly with four blanks leaving
him with a 16-7 split. But he’ll be back to try his hand again and it will
probably be a long while before he is the recipient next. All in a days’
work at Bangpra for the PGS.
Rod shows
Howett’s done
The Pattaya Golf Society took advantage of an excellent “sports day” deal to
play St Andrew’s on Wednesday, 25th May, and found the course in fair
condition on a very humid and overcast day. Avid walking golfers avoid the
course and the resultant small field had returned to the clubhouse within no
more than four hours on the course.
In third place was Pete Sumner, continuing a fine week, with 34 points and
in second was Jim Ferris on 35, playing his final round this trip. His golf
has been much better than on previous visits and he will be anxious to
return for more at the end of the year. The winner was Rod Howett with an
excellent return of 38 points to mock the club “rule” on the card advising
golfers with handicaps of more than eighteen not to play. Indeed both the
leading two golfers share the same twenty-plus handicap.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy was held back until the next
competition in the absence of a suitable candidate.
Happier memories for Lazecki
On Friday, 27th May, the Pattaya Golf Society travelled to play a stableford
competition at the Emerald course in Ban Chang, a change from the original
format which was to raise some much needed funding for the group’s chosen
charity this year, The Fr. Ray Foundation Outreach Center.
A smaller than expected field made the change in format inevitable but the
day still raised an impressive amount to be used for the provision of new
illuminated signs at the Center on Soi Thepprasit.
In the competition proper sharing second place were Ronnie Ramsay and Sam
McLellan, recently returned, and their returns of 29 points reflected the
toughness of the course on a heavily overcast and humid day. The winner was
Canadian golfer Tim Lazecki who had previous bad memories of the course
after breaking a hip there in January, but this time the smiles were back as
his impressive 35 points took the day.
Also making a return was organiser Mr Len after a barren twelve week spell
of frustrating inactivity recovering from surgery and an amended swing
eventually found success after the front nine. Just to be part of the PGS
golf day scene again was reward enough for the boss, and at Emerald. ‘Nuff
said!

Sus Ige does it again
PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar
Sus
Ige, left, with runner-up Arnold Van de Graaf.
The golfer with the most wins on the Three Sister’s
trophy has done it again. Sus Ige came in with 38 points to beat the
field and get his name engraved yet another time.
I believe it is the 14th time in 9 years that he has
done the trick. Dale Murphy has his name on the trophy 11 times to be
next in line for the number of wins. We have had about fifty different
winners over the past nine years which gives the trophy some meaning to
the end of the month champion.
We had a dog fight for second place this week. Both Arnold Van de Graaf
and Ciano Glavina tied for second at 36 points. Going through both cards
it was found that on count-back they matched each other hole for hole on
the back nine. With no winner on the back nine we reverted to the front
nine, last 6 holes, in which Arnold prevailed by a shot.
It was a hot and humid day with the fairways soaked with rain from the
previous night which made it difficult for many of us duffers. Hopefully
next week will be better.

Tuesday, May 24, Mountain Shadow –
Stableford
Surprisingly we had a pretty full house going to this course. Usually as
soon as I say Mountain Shadow the cries abound that it is too difficult.
Well I solved that and mostly we play here off the Mickey Mouse tees and all
have a fine time.
Well not exactly, because the course still has to be played and you need to
think a lot, but it becomes a pleasure to get around. On this day we were
soon on the first tee, and that was after a really good book-in that
surprised us all with a good rate. I am told that it is the same rate at
Crystal Bay so we will play there soon.
With the way ahead clear it was still push ahead and the fact that it became
steamy and really hot was the only hold up to a smooth fast trip around.
Round over it was into the showers, that I found had hot water, then into
the restaurant that I thought had good food at a good price. Then into cars
for the journey back and an early return to Bert’s. However 1600hrs being
the start of ‘happy three hours’ we timed it just fine.
So after filling up on food and a cool one, we were into the presentation.
With playing off the ‘good’ tees I expected a few good scores but the fact
only three players beat their handicap was at least justification to a great
days golf.
In first place with a great 40 points was Mick O’Connor who said it was
better than his long putt at Papa Ray’s. In second we had a count-back on 39
points that saw John Roberts ahead of Mick O’Meara in third. In fourth with
36 points was Tom Cotton and in fifth with 35 points was Mike O’Brien on
count-back over Rita Zoebelli. Then we had a beer and all was well. T.T.F.N.

Emmerson wins shoot-out for the shirt
PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar

Green Valley - Medal
1st John Emmerson (9) net 69
2nd Suzi Lawton (17) net 69
3rd Larry Maxey (19) net 69
4th Mark Wood (9) net 71
5th Kevin Moraghan (13) net 72
Twenty-six players assembled on Monday to challenge for the coveted monthly
medal champion’s shirt. The greens had just been lightly sanded so the
conditions would be difficult to say the least.
John Emmerson emerged the day’s eventual winner after the dreaded
count-backs. John had a great 37 gross on the back to nudge out Suzi Lawton.
Suzi in turn beat Larry Maxey on the back 9. Mark Wood finished alone in 4th
with net 71. Kevin Moraghan had a net 72 for 5th overall.
Next month we will be at Phoenix on June 29 for the monthly medal.
Wednesday, May 25,
Pattana – Stableford
1st Jack Spencer (10) 35pts
2nd Micheal Mier (10) 31pts
3rd Jim Sykes (9) 30pts
Wednesday seems to be the rainy day for golf; 15 signed up but only 8 were
brave enough for the conditions. We left Pattaya in the drizzle but arrived
at Pattana to sunny skies. We managed 12 holes before the skies opened but
luckily we were conveniently at a drink stop. Just a 30 min delay and then
we carried on.
Jack Spencer handled the B & C layouts the best on this day and won the comp
with 35 points. Michael Mier was second on 31 and Jim Sykes took third.
Thanks to the lads that did participate.
Friday, May 27,
Greenwood – Stableford
1st Brad Sproxton (12) 36pts
2nd Mark Wood (9) 32pts
3rd Paul Smith (1) 31pts
We are definitely in low season mode with today just 8 players turning up.
We started on C course and finished on B and Brad Sproxton scrambled well
and finished on top of the frame with 36 points.
Mark Wood left a few putts hanging on the lip and finished second on 32
points while Paul Smith was alone in third on 31.
The conditions were fantastic, especially the greens on B. Thanks again to
those that attended.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro between Soi Diana and
Soi Buakhao. We offer golf outings every Mon/Wed & Friday leaving from The

Dave’s day at Green Valley
PSC golf from The Fairways Golf Society
Monday, May 23, Pleasant Valley –
Stableford
When we teed-off today we thought we had the course to ourselves, but when
we were informed by the starter that there was a Thai seven-ball about three
holes in front of us we were dreading the worst! However for once it was no
problem as they were perfect gentlemen and stopped playing immediately we
came into sight and allowed us to play through. (If only it was like this
all the time).
Dave
Done.
The course was in quiet good condition except for the
greens which were a bit lumpy and bumpy with a lot of sand on them.
Hopefully they will improve over the next few weeks. Anyway, this was
everyone’s excuse for their abysmally low scores.
You could have knocked Tony Duthie over with a feather when he heard he had
won the day with a very mediocre 31 points. Second place was won on a 14-13
count-back by Miss On.
Both near pins meanwhile went to Ed Wyckoff.
1st Tony Duthie (19) 31pts
2nd On Soduk (22) 29pts
3rd John Coetzee (19) 29pts
Wednesday, May 25, Green Valley – Stableford
The Gods looked down on us favourably today because we managed to complete
the round dry. All we had were a few spots of rain while it seemed that all
around us it was thunder and lightning with heavy rain. In the gloom of the
dark sky Dave Done shone out like a glittering diamond and produced his best
round of golf since his arrival here in Thailand. He also got sweet revenge
on his arch rival (Steady Eddie) Tony, thrashing him by a massive six shots.
Near pins went to Brian Maddox and Tony Duthie.
1st Dave Done (15) 40pts
2nd John Coetzee (19) 35pts
3rd Tony Duthie (19) 34pts
Friday, May 27, Greenwood – Stableford
We were lucky with the weather again today as we were delayed by 15 minutes
at the start by a heavy shower, and also as we came off the ninth green the
heavens opened up once again, so we were held up for another 15 minutes. No
sooner had we completed our round before the rain came back for a third
visit, this time with thunder and lightning. We decided to dwell at the club
house a little longer than normal and get wet inside rather than out, until
the storm subsided for our journey home.
Once back at the Fairways for the presentation it turned out that Scott
Dobbins had won the day with a steady round of 35 points. He also had a near
pin, as did Yohanness (who earlier in the week had been robbed). Fortunately
due to some honest Thai taxi drivers the culprit was caught and he got most
of his belongings back, but alas not his beloved golf clubs.
1st Scott Dobbins (0) 35pts
2nd John Coetzee (19) 33pts
3rd John Haddon (25) 32pts
Note: The Fairways Driving Range is situated at the top of Pattaya
Klang on the Sukhumvit Road and has golf outings every Sun/Mon/Wed & Fri.
Anyone wishing to play with our society can call in to the club house and

No favourites at TR Golf Society
Golf from the Travellers Rest
Saturday’s winners from
Greenwood: Michael Mier, Jim Sykes, David Booth and George Bishop.
Barry Hooper
Saturday, May 21, Greenwood B & C -
Stableford
We only had a moderate number make the journey to Greenwood on Saturday, May
21 and the scores were low so one could say that the course was the winner
on the day. I did not play but was able go to the presentation back at the
Travellers Rest afterwards.
Waiting around I got talking to the returning players doing my reporter
thing as usual and trying to pick up any interesting stories. Whilst doing
this I bumped into David Booth who I had not seen in some time. He made
comment that I seem to be favouring certain players in my reports of late.
He said, “you never mention me”. I said certainly not, if you happen to have
a good week or post a very high score I try to give credit where it’s due.
All you have to do is get in the first three any outing and I report on it.
So we waited and Fergus announced the results for the day and said four
places were being honoured. In fourth was Jim Sykes with 31, third was
Michael Mier, also with 31, and second came David Booth, again on 31 and all
decided on the count-back. The winner on the day was George Bishop with just
32 points.
David Booth’s face needed to be seen to be believed, shell shock I think,
because he thought that a 31 was getting nothing. But second place was his
with the best back nine of three and so along with it came recognition and a
photo as well.
You don’t always get what you ask for in this life but sometimes you do,
don’t you David!
1st George Bishop (15) 32pts
2nd David Booth (13) 31pts
3rd Michael Mier (10) 31pts
4th Jim Sykes (10) 31pts
Monday, May 23, Bangpra - Stableford
Monday at Bangpra was big bang day - well for Jim Sykes it was. His massive
44 points was a full seven up on his nearest rival Ito Akitoshi. Then you
had to go a further three back to find third placed Fergus Brennan. Not a
big turnout on the day but a quality field it seems.
1st Jim Sykes (10) 44pts
2nd Ito Akitoshi (9) 37pts
3rd Fergus Brennan (10) 34pts
4th Ted Senior (11) 33pts
Tuesday, May 24, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Tuesday was a private affair with a birthday celebration visit for invited
players to Pattaya Country Club on behalf of Seamus Farrell. I have been
sworn to secrecy and told not to disclose his age but let’s just say that it
comes between sixty nine and seventy one. All present have to offer a big
thank you to him for an exceptionally exciting day and also to the
management and staff at the TRGG for a great evening dinner that followed.
Thursday, May 26, Phoenix - Stableford
1st Alan Evans (25) 38pts
2nd Ito Akitoshi (9) 38pts
3rd Tewin Lamthong (11) 34pts
4th Brendan Moore (11) 34pts
Thursday and the last report this week was yet another return visit to
Phoenix by popular demand, despite my reporting earlier that TRGG were
considering pulling out of the venue.
Moderate turnout and an opportunity on the day for Alan Evans to show his
prowess with the clubs and score a fair 38 points for the win, but only
after he fought off Ito Akitoshi on count-back.
Third was Tewin Lamthong with 34 points but she also had to fend off Brendan
Moore by the count back method.
Note: If you want any further or fuller information about the golf
outings played by the TRGG from the Travellers Rest Hotel, please contact
the hotel manager Tewin Lamthong on 086 056 7019 or call in to the
Travellers Rest in Soi LK Metro, Pattaya and look at the notice board or

The scribe’s stunning style
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group
Tuesday’s top three with
the staff at the Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard.
After last week’s farce of high green fees due to
holiday rates imposed by the management of Phoenix, we returned to a
full field of members and guests this week. Although the sports day rate
of 900 baht green fee is somewhat higher than most golf courses at this
time of the year, our regulars look forward to playing this high quality
course. I say that with some hesitation due to fact that there has been
some renovation to the greens etc and they are not quite up to top
standard yet.
With high temperatures and humidity today quite a few of our players
decided it would be sensible to rent a cart for at least 9 holes (if not
18). You can still share a cart at Phoenix, even for 9 holes. After the
game it showed as a few of the players who decided to walk the 18 holes
were very tired to put it mildly. However, in saying that, second and
third places were taken by two of the ‘very young’ walkers. (Clive will
love me for saying he is very young!)
But, after about three months of suffering a painful shoulder injury
yours truly won the day with 40 points. (No doubt the handicap boys will
be tutting a little after this show). The score was made possible by a
very fluky birdie 3 at the difficult Mountain 9 hole. The third shot
from approx 80 yards managed to catch the hole on its descent at the
back of the green. This scored 4 points in stableford, when if the ball
had missed the hole it could well have run off the green and ended up as
a six for only 1 point.
In second place was Richard Baldwin with a fine 39 points and in third
was the consistent Clive Robinson with 35 points. You have to admire
Clive’s golf; playing off 6 handicap he is rarely out of the frame, but
never with more than 36 or 37 points. To score the 40 points of us long
handicappers he would have to play virtually scratch golf.
Back at the Relax Bar in Ban Amphur most of the guys were quickly into
some amber fluids to cool them down before we entered into the
presentation for the day.
We welcomed Mike Wing back and newcomer Graham Tebb, who unfortunately
had to leave early at the wishes of the taxi driver.
Near pin prizes went to, Eamon Murtagh, Graham Tebb (both of these
prizes were put into the lucky draw due to them both not being in
attendance). The other two were presented to Goort Gelten and Richard
Baldwin.
This left 5 lucky draw prizes today (two of which are donated by our
hosts The Relax Bar), and as there were only five other players present
(after all the other prizes had been handed out) it meant that anyone
who was left at the presentation received, not only their free drink but
a prize as well. You can deduce from that that the main winners are not
paid very much in our group. The best way. No sandbaggers!
Anyone interested in playing with our group call me (Mike) on 087 091
7565.

The Roaring Forties
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Sunday’s winners: Thierry
Petrement, left, and Kathy Doody.
Sunday, May 22, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Thierry Petrement (11) 40pts
2nd Yui Bietry (11) 38pts
3rd Brad Delaney (7) 36pts
B Flight
1st Kathy Doody (18) 46pts
2nd Michael Seinkiewicz (18) 40pts
Jan Eriksen (16) 38pts
Near Pins: No 4 Yui Bietry, No 9 Yui Bietry, No 12 Jez Lees, No 16 Don
Lehman.
There was no man of the match today but it was not due to the performance.
It was because the best player by far was a lady, Kathy Doody, as she
replicated Mark Woods phenomenal 46 points he scored the previous Sunday.
Michael Senko, himself shooting a fine 40 points, was relegated into the
silver spot while Jan Eriksen quietly closed the flight.
The flagship flight was not to be left out as Thierry Petrement was holding
the biggest bag of loot after a splendid 40 points. Yui Bietry was two shots
adrift for the silver but Yui did have the comfort of two near pins. Yui’s
38 points was two clear of the tandem of Brad Delaney and Jon Haugen. The
mathematics on Brad’s card was more favorable than those of Jon’s.
Jon Haugen, John Bhang, Jan Eriksen, Don Lehman, Frank Kyle and Lou Zig- Zag
shared the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, May 24, Greenwood C&B - Stableford
1st Terry Mangan (12) 36pts
2nd Jon Haugen (7) 34pts
3rd Mike Jeffreys (16) 33pts
Terry Mangan may find a free one-way ticket to the destination of his choice
under the Christmas tree if the society has anything to about it; just to
give someone else a chance to win. Terry’s best of the day even par round
gave him man of the match. This was two strokes ahead of Jon Haugen and a
further stroke ahead of Mike ‘The Welsh Wizard’ Jeffreys.
Terry, never a man to do things by half, bolstered his winnings by adding a
‘2’, along with Peter ‘The Right Honorable’ Hynard.
Wednesday, May 25, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (14) 38pts
2nd Thierry Petrement (11) 31pts
B Flight
1st Brian Cooper (25) 40pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (18) 36pts
It was a fair sized field with a lot of talent but it was left to the junior
flight to provide the fireworks at Bangpra. I already have a nickname for
Brian ‘Minnie’ Cooper’ but from this day forward it will be changed to
‘Minnie Cooper S’, after his man of the match 40 points. Peter ‘Don
O’Corleone’ Henshaw and his eternal 18 handicap took the silver with a solid
even par round.
The senior flight was not quite as fierce, but Eddy ‘the Eagle’, lethal off
a 14 handicap, was top man with a rock solid 38 point haul which was the
only other card to better par. No one was more surprised than Thierry
Petrement to see his 31 point return hold up for the second spot.
No 2’s were recorded so a rollover to Friday.
Friday, May 27,
The Emerald - Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob Watson (3) 39pts
2nd Thierry Petrement (11) 39pts
B Flight
1st George Hayes (22) 42pts
2nd Don Lehmer (16) 37pts
A busy week concluded at one of the society’s favorite courses, and for some
reason it seems that the society’s members go round this course in record
time. But this did not deter George Hayes as his 42 point haul was good for
the junior flight and man of the match honours. George bettered Don ‘The
ladies man - I’m getting married in the morning’ Lehmer by five strokes.
The senior flight was determined on a count-back as Bob Watson and the
week’s top player Thierry Petrement were tied on 39 points, with George just
edging Thierry.
Thierry’s disappointment was made a little easier to bear as he, Yui Bietry
and the man of the match George Hayes shared the 2’s pot.

Murphy on the march at Diana Seniors & Ladies Open
Rich Murphy, Amphon Phuiphon
and Mike Coleman.
Nigel Cannon
Thursday, May 26, Pattaya C.C.
There were just 17 today to play in the monthly Diana Seniors and Ladies
Open at Pattaya Country Club where we enjoyed both the course and the
weather. Once again all arrived early and we were away before our time with
a swift 4 hour round.
We welcomed Brian Neal and his partner Ning Rotjana playing with us for the
first time, and a returnee Tom Bryne – with his new hip!
We had three ladies playing to day and following her success last month it
was ‘same again’ for Amphon Phuiphon (25) with 30 points. Runner-up was the
aforesaid new to us Ning Rotjana (15) with 28 points.
In the Seniors it was regular PCC and Diana player Mike Coleman (13) with a
fine 40 points. Runner-up was ‘hoppy’ Tom Byrne (14) with 35 points.
Super Seniors saw Rich Murphy (23) once again the winner with the best of
the day 42 points! Just 2 behind was another regular Werner Schwarz (15)
with 40 points.
Near pin prizes went to Rich Murphy, Ning Rotjana, Mike Coleman, and Bengt
Borg.
Alan Pearce calculated the results allowing the presentation to take place
soon after the last group came in.
All scores are submitted to Pattaya Sports Club.
The next Diana Seniors and Ladies open is on Thursday 30th June at Pattaya
Country Club with a tee time of 0900.
Sign up sheets are at Diana Green Bottle on 2nd road and the Diana Driving
range.

‘Blacky’ triumphs at Crystal Bay
PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg
Golf organizer ‘The Admiral’,
left, with Monday’s winner and scribe, Peter Blackburn.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, May 23, Crystal Bay C & A –
Stableford
Having not played Crystal Bay for a couple of years I for one was very much
looking forward to reacquainting myself with this lovely course, which I
first played in 1989. Unfortunately we only had nine golfers signed up for
the day’s competition, our smallest field of the year to date, and we headed
off from the Kronny just before 0815hrs on a beautiful sunny day.
Ken
Bernek.
Heading off down Sukhumvit Road was a nostalgic journey
in itself and 45 minutes later the three towers of condos were in sight and
we had arrived at the course which I still think of as Panya, bringing back
some great memories of over 20 years ago.
Not many cars in the car park suggested we would not have to wait too long
to tee off and yes, millionaire’s golf it was as our first threesome got
away at 0925hrs with what seemed like the golf course practically to
ourselves. This magnificent golf course was on this day as good as I’ve ever
seen it with lush fairways and greens that were firm and true, and at times
a little slick if faced with a downhill putt.
I haven’t taken too many photos while playing golf of late but I couldn’t
resist it today with the course being as picturesque as it is. Even with a
drink stop we breezed around the front nine in one hour and fifty minutes
and the whole eighteen holes took just three hours and fifty minutes.
Due to the small field we had just 1 flight on the day and a reward for the
longest first putt on C9.
There were three golfers with very good scores and ‘yours truly’ emphasized
his love affair with this course by winning the day with 43 points, 2 ahead
of Takeshi Hakozaki, with Paul Avery 1 point further back in third place. An
amazing 11 points adrift was Marie Rowles in fourth place.
1st Peter Blackburn (16) 43pts
2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (14) 41pts
3rd Paul Avery (9) 40pts
4th Marie Rowles (20) 29pts
Long Putt: Peter Blackburn
Mike Winfield was thankful for Lionel Rowles’ performance which won him the
Compass Cap and thanks to Lionel for his good sportsmanship and contribution
to charity.
Thursday, May 26, Greenwood B & C – Stableford
Three groups of four were all that were signed up for the day’s round but we
were all looking forward to playing the consistently good and challenging
Greenwood B & C nines.
We welcomed Ji Hwan (Ted) from Korea and said a sad farewell to Marie &
Lionel Rowles who will be shortly returning to Sydney, Australia after their
month’s holiday in Pattaya. Their company was greatly appreciated and we
wish them a safe journey home and look forward to seeing them next year.
We left the Kronny slightly earlier than our scheduled 0815hrs and after
just under 55 minutes arrived at the course in plenty of time for our
1000hrs tee off. As usual at this time of year the course was very quiet
which enabled our first group to tee off at 0925hrs in hot and humid
conditions with the possible threat of rain.
The golf course as usual was in great shape with true but at times tricky
greens.
We completed our front nine in just over 2 hours but came
to a grinding halt when the heavens opened as we were about to putt on the
C11 green and all balls were marked and it was off to the drink stop
alongside C12 tee to shelter from the thunderstorm. Forty minutes later the
rain stopped and it was back to the C10 green to putt out and continue our
round, and although the course was now “soggy” the greens had drained very
quickly and we completed our round in four hours and fifty minutes.
Due to the small field we had just the 1 flight on the day with 5
place-getters and a reward for the longest first putt on the final green,
C9.
The course emerged the winner on the day with not one golfer playing to
their handicap and American Ken Bernek took out top spot with a fine 35
points. A count-back was necessary to determine second and third spots with
Stu (Bundy) Rifkin victorious over fellow Aussie Daryl Evans, both on 32
points. Stu insisted on it being noted that he was “attacked” by three wasps
whilst leaving the tee on B6 and it was necessary for his caddy to
administer some remedial treatment on his back. Explicit details were not
provided!
Another Aussie Mike Gosden finished in fourth spot with 31 points,
marginally ahead of newcomer Ji Hwan who beat Paul Avery for fifth place in
a count-back.
1st Ken Bernek (18) 35pts
2nd Stu Rifkin (15) 32pts
3rd Daryl Evans (19) 32pts
4th Mike Gosden (10) 31pts
5th Ji Hwan (28) 30pts
Long Putt: Stu Rifkin
Lionel Rowles celebrated his departure by once more winning the Compass Cap
and we thanked him for his many donations to charity over the last month.
Deefa the Dog was not present as he is still recovering from his trip to the
bush.

A fish called Graham
PSC golf with the Outback Golf Bar
Friday winners: (from right)
Robert Ford, Graham (the fish) Fletcher, and Clinton Kimber.
Monday, May 23, Burapha C & D –
Stableford
Twenty-seven Outbackers played the C and D loops from the white tees, in a
day of contrasting scores from the sublime to the ridiculous; a brilliant 42
points from the flamboyant Greig Ritchie at the top to a miserable 19 from
Arab Russell at the bottom, although he (Arab) could be forgiven for playing
in a moon boot.
However, there were good reasons for the score spread; as the rough in most
cases was extra brutal, especially on the back nine; if you could find the
narrow fairways you could score, if you didn’t, you could do little more
than chop it out. Even the Capt’ found it tough going with a reasonable
score on the front but not being able to hit the fairway on the back (nine)
made for hard day at the office.
It really was a great day for golf though with a little cloud cover to keep
the heat off and no rain, everyone was around in under 4 hours today which
made for pleasant golf.
Arab’s cavalier brother, Lumpy, was pipped at the post in Div A by the big
but sometimes wayward hitting, Owen Walkley, both with 37, as Steve Mann got
the better of his good mate Rosco, both on 35. As mentioned previously,
Greig took the top spot in Div B, five clear of another Greg, this time
Hill, who was having his last game before returning to Aus.
There were three ‘2’s from Greig Ritchie, Barry McIntosh & Lumpy Russell.
Div A (0–15)
1st Owen Walkley (11) 37pts
2nd Lumpy Russell (14) 37pts
3rd Steve Mann (9) 35pts
4th Rosco Langoulant (15) 35pts
Div B (16+)
1st Greig Ritchie (20) 42pts
2nd Greg Hill (23) 37pts
3rd Barry McIntosh (18) 32pts
4th Ivan Plunkett (20) 31pts
Tuesday, May 24, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
A good field of 21 Outbackers at Pattaya’s nearest course were away well
ahead of time, leaving the way behind for Seamus’s birthday bash (from the
TRGG group) following on behind, other than that, players were generally
pretty scant.
The course is going through its usual maintenance programme with the greens
presenting themselves in varying states of repair; some have been just
hollow tined and some have been sanded as well, and others are in different
stages of recovering from earlier work. All in all a bit of a hotchpotch,
which is probably why there were no ‘2’s today.
David Day’s 38 points won Div A, keeping out the course specialist, Mike
Allidi, who had to settle for second with 36 (gross 73), and his mate, Jan
Eriksen was third with 33; and oddly enough, all three of them played in the
same group! Chad (35pts) was a little surprised to find himself still at the
top of Div B after wiping the 15th and 16th as Dave Earthrowl continued his
run of form, taking second with 34.
Div A (0–18)
1st David Day (16) 38pts
2nd Mike Allidi (1) 36pts
3rd Jan Eriksen (16) 33pts
4th Chris Fletcher (12) 32pts
Div B (19+)
1st Barry Chadbourn (19) 35pts
2nd David Earthrowl (21) 34pts
3rd Doug Chalkley (22) 33pts
4th Andrew Makara (27) 33pts
Wednesday, May 25, Phoenix M & L – Stableford
The Outback Bar travelled to Phoenix for only the second time in many months
with 16 players in the competition and four guests from Hong Kong. We were
met by plenty of thunder and lightning but fortunately when we teed off most
of the weather went around us leaving ideal conditions for the rest of the
round.
Phoenix is one of the courses that we certainly look forward to playing but
must admit we were disappointed in the condition of the course, the greens
were particularly bumpy and haven’t recovered from their coring and sanding.
The rough has not been cut recently and was unplayable in some places even
within a metre of the fairway.
A good score from Darren Norris (37pts) headed the field, with Tim Knight
and Steve Smith both with 36.
For the second day running, there were no ‘2’s: - maybe the state of the
greens?
1st Darren Norris (14) 37pts
2nd Tim Knight (26) 36pts
3rd Steve Smith (21) 36pts
4th Barry McIntosh (18) 34pts
5th Owen Walkley (11) 34pts
Monday, May 27, Khao Kheow B & C – Stableford
Twenty-nine Outbackers hit the B and C loops today and as it was raining,
the Capt’, after some consideration, made it ‘lift clean and place’ on the
fairways even though carts were allowed on the fairway.
As per usual, there were no scores that tore up the course however we did
have some funny stuff going on during the day. In Western Australia there
are a number of popular water sporting events happening from time to time,
like the famous America’s Cup yacht race, there is a super surf life-saving
and surf-boarding event which takes place down in the Margaret River area at
Bell’s Beach, or you can take all sorts of cruises up the Swan River to do
wine tasting at Houghton’s winery, but swimming on a golf course I have
never seen before.
You may have heard of a film called “A Fish called Wanda”, well we have our
own fish, aptly named Graham “the Fish” Fletcher aka Graham “the Fly
swallower” Fletcher. If you are looking for a good time on the golf course I
highly recommend a game with the said person, it does wonders for your
putting even up to 3 holes later when you can’t see the line for the tears
in your eyes.
Somehow he managed to completely submerse himself underwater as he lost his
balance adjacent to the green on C1, one minute he was there and one minute
later he’d gone for a swim. If that wasn’t enough, whilst continuing to play
in his soggy clothes, he was seen on the tee of C7 bent double, trying to
cough up a fly he’d just swallowed. Thanks mate for a great day out!
But in all seriousness it really was a good day for golf, it rained maybe
for two holes then stayed overcast so it wasn’t too hot. Top scorer was
Clinton Kember (36pts), which must be regarded as pretty good round here and
the 35 points from second placed, Paul Greenaway, wasn’t too shabby either,
even if he doesn’t agree with the new PSC drop zone rule. Owen Walkley also
did well with 35 and three back was Frank Nottle with 32.
Robert Ford beat John O’Keefe on count-back, both on 34, to head Div B, with
Pottsy prowling a couple back and Mark Kembrey, here one of his brief R & R
trips, was in fourth with 30.
One regular Outbacker who didn’t play too well wrote on his score card
“Please give me a shot back sir’ but special requests like this should be
accompanied with the appropriate sum of money, cos money talks in all
languages.
There were only two ‘2’s, both coming on the Island green (B8), one by the
Capt’ and the other by Neil Lavery (playing in the same group). The Capt’s
was 18 inches away but Neil’s was only 6 inches and he (Neil) also won all
four caddy skins for his girl, not a bad day out for her.
Div A (0-15)
1st Clinton Kimber (14) 36pts
2nd Paul Greenaway (10) 35pts
3rd Owen Walkley (11) 35pts
4th Frank Nottle (11) 32pts
Div B (16+)
1st Robert Ford (18) 34pts
2nd John O’ Keefe (16) 34pts
3rd Campbell Potts (20) 32pts
4th Mark Kembrey (18) 30pts

Stockman shoots 71 off the stick
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Wednesday winners at Green
Valley: Kari Aarnio and Bryan Rought.
Monday, May 23, Bangpra - Stableford
This was our first visit here for over six months due to the restricted tee
off time in the high season and everyone enjoyed the course today
considering the greens were very slick, almost similar to Mountain Shadow.
There were two divisions out today with the cut in division 1 at 6-16. The
best score came in division 2 and playing off 18 William Chang scored 22 on
the front nine and won this division with 39 points. Gordon Everingham was
in second on 32.
Back after a month off due to an accident on the bike and a dodgy leg, Chris
Voller returned to win division 1 with 36 points while Billy Hewitt was
second with 32.
Colin James birdied the 8th with a 30ft putt to take the ‘2’s purse in
division 1 and a rollover ensued in division 2 to Green Valley.
Wednesday, May 25, Green Valley - Stableford
The last Wednesday of the month and our fun game sponsored by the rollover
kitty; there were ten teams of 3 out in a 1-2-3 competition plus the normal
stableford game with the cut today at 6-16 in division 1 and 17 + in
division 2 plus the ladies of course.
Playing with us for many years, Kari Aarnio got cut in our trip to Hua Hin
from 18 to 16 and now returned a score of 41 points, 25 on the back nine, to
win division 1 after beating Dave Stockman on a 25/19 count-back. Playing
off 4, Dave had a brilliant round with a gross 71. Neville Scurrell was
third with 37 points.
Bryan Rought won division 2 with 38 points and Gordon Everingham was second
after beating Harry Riley on a 15/14 back six count-back, both on 37 points.
Mam Morel topped the ladies division with an incredible 40 points, apologies
to her as we missed the photo of her back at Siam Cats.
Near pins went to Noi Emmerson, Mam Morel, Dave Stockman, Chris Voller (3),
Andy Baber, Lee Casey, Brian Howe and Erik Reginiussen.
In the ‘2’s in division 1 Kari Aarnio, Colin James and Dave Stockman shared
the pot and in division 2 Lee Casey birdied the 16th to get a rollover from
Bangpra plus today’s purse.
In the 1-2-3 team competition, Dave Stockman , Harry and Ya Riley won with
82 points after beating Kari Aarnio, William Chang and Burnie Sinclair on a
52/51 back nine count-back, both teams on 82 points, while Jean Morel,
Gordon Everingham and Erik took third, beating Grenville Hill, Bryan Rought
and Neville Scurrell on a 52/49 count-back.
Terry Redding returned to the land of Oz last weekend and Colin James the
same today.
Note: At Eastern Star the greens are still unpredictable so we have
cancelled the next two weeks and for a fun day out and for something
completely different we are playing the naval course at Bang Saray.

Heavy weather makes for heavy going
IPGC golf from The Haven
Roar Berger.
Monday, May 23,
The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Rod Howett (25) 34pts
2nd Darryll Kellett (16) 31pts
3rd Russell Exley (7) 29pts
4th Mike Dabanovich (10) 28pts
Rod
Howett.
The week started out with a very tough day round the
Emerald layout that proved to be playing a lot longer and a lot harder than
normally, although the condition of the greens was excellent when one
eventually arrived there.
Rod Howett, who is almost desperate to get his handicap reduced, at last got
his wish fulfilled even though his score was a little higher than he would
have wished; the resulting rise in the CSS and another very good score at St
Andrews later in the week meant that he would be reduced by two at the end
of week review.
The round at the Emerald was a lot better than it appears at first sight as
he led in a very competitive field, with a few low handicappers among them,
by three clear shots.
Darryll Kellett, who was playing his last game prior to returning to Oz,
added yet another share of the day’s prizes to his previous haul and Russell
Exley and Mike Dabanovich stuck to the task well enough to get in position
to take prizes but dropped off the pace over the closing holes.
Although there were no 2’s once again in the second division Russell Exley
slipped one in for the first division pool.
Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed back Mike Dabanovich and
Roar Berger and had a farewell for Darryll Kellett.
Wednesday, May 25, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Trevor Schirmer (13) 36pts
2nd Al Rolnik (20) 34pts
3rd Barry Winton (4) 29pts
Russell
Exley.
With insufficient numbers available to play the planned
format of a pairs scramble, the day’s competition reverted to a singles
Stableford played from the blue tees and with the course belying its
distance as shown on the card, the winning score of level par to handicap
was a very creditable result.
Trevor Schirmer did well to lead in the group with that score to take the
top spot by two from Al Rolnik, who is still showing regularly in the prize
lists although only playing once a week. No doubt the additional six days of
practice are helping in achieving that end.
Barry Winton on the other hand is trying extremely hard to get back to form
and playing at every opportunity but has still yet to return to his old
prodigious length from the tees.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but Barry Winton took
the first division with his solo.
Back at The Haven there were welcome backs for Michael Izzo and Waroon
Taranski prior to the presentations.
Friday, May 27, Phoenix Blue Tees - Monthly Medals
CSS 75
Division 1
1st Russell Exley (7) net 75
2nd Barry Winton (4) net 77
3rd Mike Dabanovich (10) net 78
Division 2
1st Roar Berger (25) net 80
2nd Grant Cadell (16) net 83
3rd Rod Howett (25) net 83
Trevor
Schirmer.
Once again the recent wet weather had left the course in
a very sodden condition allowing almost no run in the fairways and making it
essential to find the fairways rather than risk a poor lie in the rough,
even though Phoenix’s rough is some of the most benign in the area it did
not play to that description on the day.
Russell Exley has hit a rich vein of form recently and again came back to
the clubhouse with the best of the day to take the first division medal and
although not able to play to handicap, with the CSS going out a shot and an
adjusted score lowered a shot, it resulted in no uplift and he will
therefore be once again playing from a six for the next few outings at
least.
Barry Winton, who is still recovering from his back surgery and the
subsequent loss of playing time, struggled with the added length of the
course and was happy in the end to slip into second place two shots behind
with Mike Dabanovich another shot back in third.
Roar Berger, only recently returned from a non-playing period in Norway, won
the second division medal with an unflattering score but it was still good
enough to take the honours by three from Grant Cadell and Rod Howett, with
Grant winning the required count-back with a better 39 to 39.5 from Rod.
It was no surprise to find that there were no 2’s in either division with
the course playing to almost its highest degree of difficulty.
Before the presentation of the prizes Peter Sumner was welcomed back.
Note: As from the 1st of May the Haven group will depart Soi 13 at
the earlier time of 8.30am until further notice. If you would like to play
with The Haven group you can contact mobile 084 782 4582 or call in to the
hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to
the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but
you should be there by 8.00 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and 9.00am on
Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can
be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.
