Pattaya-area marine police are stepping up efforts to prevent fuel
smuggling in the face of higher prices and lost tax revenue.

the Royal Thai Police Central Investigation Bureau, talks about
increasing efforts to end fuel smuggling.
Maj. Gen. Suthep Detraksa, deputy commissioner for the Royal Thai Police
Central Investigation Bureau and Maj. Gen. Chaowalit Sawangpuoet,
commander in of the Marine Police, spoke to about 160 water-patrol
officers May 26. They reminded officers about smuggling laws, the
importance of diesel and other petroleum taxes and the need to educate
business owners not to buy illegal, un-taxed fuel.
Suthep said the 12 percent excise on fuel is an important revenue source
for the government, but with oil at near-record prices, smugglers are
stepping up their activities and finding strong demand from people who
want the lower prices that come from untaxed petrol.
Maj. Gen. Chaowalit said natural gas smuggling is also a problem and
that often smugglers dilute fuel and sell at higher prices, harming
consumers in order to maximize their own profits. He said stricter
suppression efforts and more arrests are needed.
