Senior Invitational Games 2012
is a huge success at Regent’s
All of the participants
excited to start the games.
Katrin Puutsa
During the weekend of 4th and 5th of February, the 2012
Senior Invitational Games were held at The Regents School, Pattaya.
Over 200 senior athletes displayed their talents at this
year’s Senior Invitational Games. Many schools from around Asia entered the
tournament with athletes representing BIS Phuket, ICS Bangkok, St. Andrews
Rayong, American School Bangkok, Taipei European School, St Andrews Bangkok,
KTJ Malaysia and of course, The Regents School.
The standard of sport over this long weekend was
phenomenal. It seems that there is an improvement in teams year on year, and
this year saw many exceptional team and individual performances.
Feel the determination.
Day one on Saturday started with the girls playing
football and the boys in the sports hall competing in basketball.
Day two brought some tired athletes to the playing
fields. The second day would be a role reversal with the girls heading onto
the basketball courts and the boys heading out to the oval for the football
tournament.
Overall, the annual tournament was yet another success
with increased numbers again this year, and an ever-improving standard of
sport on show.
Finally we like to say a big thank you to the Regent’s
Pattaya GoldFish student enterprises for a fantastic supply of smoothies,
sandwiches and snacks all day. They worked very hard and kept all the teams
well hydrated and full of energy throughout the tournament.
We are looking forward to the next big sports challenge,
the Under 13 FOBISSEA Games at The Regent’s School Pattaya in early March!
The brains behind this great event.

Regent’s Year 10 go on bronze expedition to Khao Yai
The happy international
awarders.
Katrin Puutsa
Over the weekend of the 10th-12th February twenty-eight
Year 10 students joined our largest expedition to date into Khao Yai
National Park. Their trips to Koh Chang earlier in the term had been an
opportunity to develop the skills required to plan and carry out this
expedition trek, and now each was ready to prove their willingness to step
well outside their comfort zone in journeying in small groups through the
forest.
A splash of a time!
Each group was required to plan and cook their own meals
and the teacher-assessors were pleased to see lots of fresh vegetables and
creative menus in evidence!
There was plenty of wildlife around at the campsite -
from deer, civet and porcupines to mischievous monkeys that were ready to
break into the group’s tents or steal food whenever it was left unattended.
As they trekked through the forest the four expedition
groups learned to move quietly to observe wildlife, and supported each other
through the tougher sections of the walk, building up their personal
resilience and leadership skills on the way.
Well done to everyone who took part in the expedition -
it was a memorable and very successful weekend.
Back to basics.

Collaborative education
with Germany
Ulrich Werner
Dr. Viphandh Roengpithya, president of Asian
University, this month gave permission for the 2+3 programmes with
Karlshochschule International University in Germany.

at Asian University to gain permission for university entrance in
Germany (in their field of study). These two years focus on the

Students from St Andrews School learn how the Holiday Inn uses information technology to run their business
Year 10 students eagerly
arrive at the Holiday Inn.
Caroline
Harcourt,ICT Teacher
As part of their Information Technology course the
year 10 students from St Andrews School ventured out of the classroom
and went to the Holiday Inn, Pattaya to find out how IT is used to run a
hotel.
After a very warm welcome from the staff at the
Holiday Inn the students were given a presentation showing details on
how technology is used for marketing, reservations, billing, human
resources, and restaurant and facility management. The students were
amazed that almost every job in the hotel incorporated some form of IT.
The students also had the chance to look behind the
scenes of the hotel and went to the basement to see the central control
systems for the air con, lighting, fire/smoke alarms, generator and
security systems such as CCTV.
Thank you to Treethip and
the other staff at the Holiday Inn for putting on such a great day.
Here are some great quotes from the students
highlighting what a worthwhile trip it was for them:
“I was astonished by the fact that they were willing
to give up their time for us and show us how they used IT in the hotel.
Thank you for the time you spent with us and for teaching us so much!”
said Eddy.
“It was amazing to learn about the new technologies
they use in the hotel. By the end of the visit I completely understood
how the technology is used to run the hotel,” said Ferie Ann.
“When we went to the Holiday Inn I was surprised to
see the amount of effort and IT that is used to manage a hotel. The
staff at the Holiday Inn explained a lot about how it was centrally
managed and answered many questions I had. The basement was an
interesting area and I was amazed at the systems that they had down
there: controls systems for the generator, air con, fire alarms and
security. It was all in all a great experience!” said Daniel
The students visited the
CCTV security room to see if they could find themselves arriving at the
hotel on the video recording.
“Our trip to the Holiday Inn was fun and educational.
We learnt about all the different systems working behind the scenes to
help the hotel run smoothly and efficiently. The people were extremely
helpful and explained away all of our questions while they took us
through all the separate parts of the hotel. It was really different to
be on the other side, looking on and understanding what happens behind
the scenes rather than just being a guest at the hotel,” said Kitty
We would like to thank Craig Ryan, the manager, and
all of the staff at the Holiday Inn for giving up so much time and
showing us so many interesting IT systems. We are also very grateful to
the Holiday Inn for providing us with lunch and letting us make our own
pizzas!
Learning about the control
system for the air conditioning and fire alarm.
Students were shown how
the POS (Point of Sale) system works in the restaurant.
The generator is in the
basement and is automatically controlled to switch on if there is a
power cut.
Making their own pizzas
for lunch!
Staff from the Holiday
Inn taught the students about the different IT systems used by the hotel
to run the business.
