Most stupid suggestion ever

Editor

Re: City to spend 140 million baht on Pattaya Beach beautification: I have the perfect answer - charge for parking on the beachfront, say 100 baht, and they would soon find somewhere else to park. Spend your money on making car parks as other countries do. It is just laziness parking wherever it suits you.

Another traffic lane would be a nightmare, especially narrowing the beachside for it. Does anyone ever go and see the volume of people on the beachfront? Besides the short time girls, there are people with pushchairs, bicycles, and the odd roller skaters. Also little children like to play safely on it whilst their parents are looking after their beachfront business. This is the most stupid suggestion ever.

Still doesn’t feel welcome here

Editor;

I just watched Pattaya Mail on TV, a big Norwegian bringing in free wheelchairs/beds for disabled people, which was commendable. PSC, a charitable organisation, Jesters, bars, and many more, here and throughout the country, all contributing to helping unfortunate Thai people.

Yet after 10 years, I have never felt welcome here, from the government, where many years ago one of its elected officials made a comment that ‘all Farang are rich’ to immigration, and so on.

I thought when the British educated PM took over, we would see some small changes, but no. We are wanted only for our spending, and I feel that will never change

Beach road beautification?

Editor;

I just read your article on the upcoming beach road beautification and I am frankly shocked. My initial thoughts on reading the heading were that the long awaited beach regeneration was to finally go ahead. But no, as that budget is not yet approved. Instead the plan is to further reduce the beach / promenade area by building an extra road lane as well as planting a few trees, touching up the paintwork and making the beach vendors buy new umbrellas again so they are all the same colour.

This should be the prime tourist area and why anyone would want more vehicles in that area is beyond me. Hasn’t the success of walking street taught anyone in city hall anything? Tourists and locals alike prefer to walk in a safe, car free area, not along a 4 lane highway with narrow pavements. Will there also be 20 sets of traffic lights installed to allow people to cross this 4 lane highway and will they be ignored as happened in the recent past?

If traffic congestion is considered a problem on beach road the fix is easy and has been done for short periods in the past - remove all the motorbike and car rental stations that have taken over the left lane. This allows traffic to flow much better and frees up much needed parking space.

I also wonder how long it will be before this new road will be turned into a permanent market area. Any bets?

Great 4 or 5 years

Editor;

They will probably do all the planting and beautifying to Beach Road just before they tear it all out so cars and taxis will have another lane to go, nowhere? This, combined with the with the underpass work at Sukhumvit & Pattaya Klang will make it a great 4 or 5 (or 10) years to drive in Pattaya! The good news is that all the giant tour buses that have only 10 passengers will be able to double park more easily, but wait for one to get caught in the Sukhumvit underpass when it fills with rain water...big fun!

Thanks for mentioning the divorce rate

Editor;

Thank you Hillary for mentioning the divorce rate in the civilized world. It is the same rate in Germany and after the law changed in Germany in 1977, a divorce meant a nearly financial ruin in case the man had a good income and property and so on. Plus the money you had to pay for the children. You had to share what you both own (house car) and you had to pay your ex-wife too because she had to take care the children and could not work. Moaners and groaners crying for the loss of 2 million Thai baht? Peanuts! They have never been divorced before in Europe I guess.

Congratulations Pattaya Mail

Editor;

Re: “Sattahip officials bring aid to boy recovering from hydrocephalus surgery” Pattaya Mail, Friday, Feb. 10 - Congratulations Pattaya Mail, without your coverage this family would have been ignored by hospitals and officials alike. Your story has helped this poor family immensely.

What will end of Beach Road / Walking Street look like now?

Editor;

What a waste of money. I can see problems (technical) already with adding another lane that obviously would have to be at the beach side. While the whole world seems to be trying to reduce traffic, Pattaya does the opposite and concentrates more into an already congested area. What the end of Beach Road / walking street will look like I don’t know. Is this April 1st?

Ian

Are my eyes playing tricks on me?

Editor;

Is it just me or are my eyes playing tricks on me? In the story about the victim Norwegian Tourist getting robbed (“Norwegian robbed of 60,000 baht by Jomtien bargirl” - Pattaya Mail Feb 17), is the policeman in the station at his desk playing Solitaire? Really? Really? Way to go officer, that will get you some immediate leads into the case.

Expect traffic snarls at all times

Editor;

Expect traffic snarls at all times. Beach Road is a mess. Instead of bothering farangs without helmets for 100 baht, how about the police concentrate on getting vehicles moving? This would not provide them with any fines, so it will never happen.

Rick Delaney

Crazy idea

Editor;

Reducing the walk area for pedestrians along Beach Road is a crazy idea. Indeed, ban parking along Beach Road. It certainly needs a clean-up, as it is really tatty and while they’re at it, get serious about moving all the pros and ladyboys at night! Let’s have fines of BT1,000 + too. With a smaller footpath, people will be even more unlikely to escape wandering hands.

John

Pork barrel merry-go-round

Editor;

Re: Beach Road beautification: When friends of city hall have the contacts for concrete and road resurfacing, this is a tried and tested winner for generating massive volumes of spondulas for all parties involved. Well done committee! They fell for it again. Once the new concrete has set and the 1mm of tarmac has dried it will be time to dig it all up again for the next set of drainage pipes. 3 months after that we can replant fresh electrical cables. Repeat ad infinitum. It’s the Fun City pork barrel merry-go-round. LOL.

David W.

Another typical scam?

Editor;

Create a nice looking beach side, then narrow the footpath making it hard for the tourists to enjoy it. This sure seems like another typical scam. Football fields would bring in sports tourists playing in tournaments if they were developed right, whereas the beautification would just spend money with no foreseeable monetary benefit, except to those doing the construction.
