Pattaya bureaucrats were told they must do more to mitigate the
impact of tourism and industry on the environment at a two-day seminar
organized by the city and Burapha University.
Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and the city’s two deputy permanent secretaries
led civil servants to Hotel J for the required April 22-23 workshop
entitled “Development of Potential and Visions.”
Lectures from Burapha professors covered development of a tourism-based
economy, environment impact and infrastructure management.
Assistant Professor Kriangsak Phramphan, director of the school’s
Academic Services office, spoke on the effects of tourism and industry
on the environment. Vichian Tansirikhongkhol compared the government’s
administration of Pattaya with that of cities in Scandinavia, and
Chaiwat Wongasa lectured on “leading during change and management of the
public sector.”

The common theme in all three lectures was that Chonburi is a province
with much diversity, serving as a base for tourism, industry and
agriculture. But the growth of the area has damaged the environment.
Government, the lecturers said, needs to have a better understanding,
more knowledge and initiative to control and preserve the environment
while eradicating pollution.
The lessons will continue through May 2 with select bureaucrats
traveling to Scandinavia to observe case studies in environmental
management.
