King Power crowned elephant polo champions
King Power receive the King’s
Cup trophy from the HM the King of Thailand’s Royal representative, H.E.
Privy Councilor, Rear Admiral, Mom Luang Usni Pramoj.
Four days of fun, festivities and competition featuring
50 street elephants and sixteen teams, including Thai supermodels, New
Zealand All Black rugby players and the Tiffany Show Pattaya, saw the 2014
King’s Cup Elephant tournament offer up plenty of memorable moments and new
champions.
Held from August 28-31 at the VR Sports Club on the outskirts of Bangkok,
the second day of the tournament witnessed two thousand local school
children attend the event on what has become known as Chang Noi Day (Little
Elephant Day). Children from local schools all over Bangkok were invited to
get up close with the elephants and learn more about their national animal.
A range of educational walks, games and activities all teaching the benefits
of elephant conservation were also put on by the organizers.
Day three saw a change of tack and was the cue for fashion as Ladies Day
unfolded, or as it is now unofficially known, the ‘new Ascot’ of Bangkok.
Ladies from all walks of life dressed to impress with the best attired lady
winning a week long holiday at NIYAMA Resort in the Maldives. The day was
attended by well known celebrities and socialites such as Sonya Couling,
Cindy Bishop and Kathy Kingpayome.
On the field the ladies were also trying their best to impress but the
all-female Mercedes Benz team lost out in a thrilling penalty shoot-out to
the Louis Roederer Hong Kong Team.
The three days of group matches saw many exciting games and close outcomes
but the field was eventually whittled down and the final match on day four
placed two stellar teams – Audemars Piguet and King Power Duty Free against
each other in yet another closely fought battle for the 13th King’s Cup
title. Audemars Piguet featured the talented Kalaan brothers, Uday and
Angad, along with Marc Williams, while King Power, captained by Tom Claytor,
included in their ranks Nattapong Pratumlee and Satid Wongkraso.
The highly anticipated final was presided over by the King of Thailand’s
Royal representative, H.E. Privy Councilor, Rear Admiral, Mom Luang Usni
Pramoj.
The match was so close that it went to a penalty shootout and when that did
not yield a goal a ‘sudden death’ play-off was required to determine the
winners. Up stepped Satid Wongkraso to score the winning shot and become the
hero for King Power as they emerged as this year’s worthy champions.
The exciting event was not only about fun and games however – a generous sum
of THB 4.5 million was raised for various elephant charity projects bringing
the total sum raised to since the tournament’s inception to THB 28.7
million.

Local athletes star
at Thailand Special Olympics
A cash bonus to go with three gold medals in the
swimming event.
Derek Franklin
Recently Pattaya, and the province of Chonburi, were represented for
the first time ever at the Special Olympics Thailand.
The Special Olympics were founded in the 1960’s by Eunice Kennedy Shriver,
member of the famous Kennedy clan and sister of President John and Senators
Robert and Ted Kennedy.
It was over twenty years later in 1987 that Thailand held its first Special
Olympics and the competition is now held every two years.
Children from the Father Ray Center for Children with Special Needs traveled
up to the province of Nakhon Ratchasima where they joined athletes from one
hundred similar organizations for several days of competition.
For many of the children it was their first time away from home, but with
almost as many chaperones as athletes, and no parents in sight, it was a
week to remember.
Athletes participated in a variety of sports, including athletics, swimming
and table tennis, as well as several sports specially adapted to children
with special needs and which involve the athlete using their motor skills.
For most athletes, whether they have or do not have a physical or
intellectual disability, winning a medal at the Olympics, Paralympics or the
Special Olympics is the pinnacle of their training, and a large selection of
gold, silver and bronze medals traveled back to Pattaya with a group of very
happy athletes.
Proudly showing of the silver medal won in the
100m sprint.
Cerebral palsy did not stop this young boy
winning two medals in the athletics.
Winner and runner-up in the high and long jump
competitions.

Dolphins flounder on Trat road trip
Pattaya United’s Narakorn

Division 1 league fixture at the Trat Stadium, Sunday, August 31.
(Photo/Pattaya United FC)
Pattaya United slipped to their thirteenth defeat of the
current Thai Division 1 league campaign when they lost 1-0 away at Trat FC
last Sunday, August 31.
On a heavily rain affected pitch both sides struggled to create any clear
cut chances and the only goal of the match came in the 56th minute from
Trat’s Japanese striker Seiya Sugishita. Despite United pressing late in the
game they were unable to pierce a resilient home defence.
The loss leaves the Dolphins still in tenth place in the standings with 6
games remaining. United’s next league fixture is this coming Saturday,
September 6, at home against Nakhon Pathom. Kick off for the match is
scheduled for 4 p.m.

The highs of low season
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Peter Rogers having a cold one
back at TGC.
Steve Ellison
Monday, August 25, Green Valley (white tees) –
monthly medal
1st Wayne Cottrell (12) net 79
2nd Geoff Doody (19) net 81
3rd Henry O’Brien (17) net 81
Well, the dark clouds and the threat of rain for the last week finally
reared its’ ugly head. We got drenched! The good thing about a Thai dousing
and a British one is about 25 degrees - Celsius that is. We usually get
round to finish eventually and get rained out only 1 or 2 times a year so we
can’t really complain about our near-perfect micro climate here in Pattaya.
Only the first group off managed to finish, but that’s the way it goes
sometimes. Wayne Cottrell joins us with his fourball just about every Monday
and for his steadfastness becomes our Monthly Medal winner for August. A
nice dry Antigua shirt is waiting here for you mate!
Reminder- if you did not see our September schedule, we are off to Kabinburi
next week on the 11th and 12th for the road trip, so sign up quickly please.
Wednesday, August 27, Burapha C & D (blue tees) –
Stableford
1st Thierry Danzas (21) 29pts
2nd Paul Tudor (0) 28pts
3rd Walter Baechli (16) 27pts
Yes, you read it right, Burapha C & D from the blues turned out to be a
tough old slog. It certainly is a different course, as they say, and nobody
even got to the 30 point mark on a day of interesting frustrations. Don’t
get me wrong, the field was happy to tee off from the blues and welcomed the
challenge.
The course was in pretty good shape in spite of the recent weather. On the
other side of the road, Laem Chabang was covered by black clouds all day so
the luck of the draw gave us the right choice of courses.
The colourful Walter Baechli took third spot today with his 27 point
endeavour. Easy going Walter is always fun to play with and keeps a smile on
his face and a positive attitude for the whole round. Next up the ladder was
GolfAsian’s own Paul Tudor. This guy is a real golfer and plays off scratch,
must be nice! Paul turned in 28 points for second.
The winner and handicap-dropper again was Thierry “The French Connection”
Danzas whose 29 points was the best we could muster on this brutal course.
Thierry is poised to get below a 20 handicap as his game keeps improving and
his scoring gets better.
Friday, August 29, Pattavia (white tees) – Stableford
1st Peter Rogers (22) 36pts
2nd Michael Ramirez (22) 33pts
3rd Robbie Taylor (15) 32pts
3rd David Ferris (24) 32pts
News flash - the road is paved! Well, not all of it, but those killer
potholes are nearly all gone and by the time you read this, it may all be
finished. A big section from the 331 has been completely resurfaced and the
improvement is fantastic. Personally, I think the U-turn after the Shell
station is the best way in, going through all the fields of Pattavia
pineapples, from which the course gets its name.
This golf course just keeps getting better (not any easier though!) and when
we played it she was in great shape. It was surprisingly quiet out there
today for such a nice golf course that is great value. If you are not aware,
the new clubhouse is already open.
We had a small turnout of 3 groups today as we are hopefully coming out of
the low season depression. But hey, it’s quality not quantity so off we went
at our scheduled 9:30 tee time.
We had Michael Ramirez joining us today and the young Angelino from Bangkok
had a very respectable 33 on the card. A shot back was Robbie Taylor and
Dave Ferris on 32 to tie for third, must be those tricky greens mate.
Winner on the day was TGC regular Peter Rogers who smoked the field by 3
shots and his 36 took him to the top of the podium. Well done Pete, and
thanks to all who joined us at The Golf Club this week for more golf in
Amazing Thailand!

Freddy Starbeck - golfer of the month
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Scramble winners Paul Smith &
Tom Byrne.
Sunday, August 24, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (14) 36pts
2nd Tom Byrne (15) 35pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (16) 33pts
2nd Jim Bell (16) 32pts
Near Pins: No 5 Bill Peach, No 8 Jim Bell, No 12 Dave Boron, No 16 Bill
Peach.
The storm clouds gathered as the lads and lasses set out for our regular
Sunday bash at Green Valley. It took about four holes of play before the
heavens opened up. Most hoped that everything would work out fine in the end
and they were not disappointed as the weather cleared up later in the day,
however the rain had left the course in a very soggy state and made it a
very long course. This was reflected in the scores that produced only one
player at par or better.
Birthday boy Colin Davis
celebrates with son Paul.
Freddy Starbeck fired a very creditable even par round to lead A Flight and
the field by one clear shot and deservedly took home the honours on the day.
Irishman Tom Byrne followed Freddy up the podium steps a shot adrift.
Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw once again appeared in the B Flight
winner’s podium, even though he could not quite match his recent form.
Peter’s 33 points was one clear of Jimmy ‘AK-47’ Bell who also picked up a
near pin and a ‘2’.
The race for the golfer of the month looked like a two horse race between
John Pierrel 45 points and Paul Bray with 40 points.
Big hitting Dave Boran split the 2’s pot with Jim.
Tuesday, August 26, Greenwood A & B - Stableford
1st Bruce Walters (28) 42pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (14) 38pts
3rd Kevin Rogers (10) 38pts
The lads took on the Peter W. Thomson designed Greenwood and a couple of
familiar Aussies; Bruce Walters taking the day with a sparkling 42 points
and Kevin Rogers on 38 points placing third. Sitting between them was the
smug Freddy Starbeck clutching the silver by way of count back over Kevin.
Freddy drew level with John Pierrel in the race to Ban Chang with just two
games left to play. He also got a half share of the ‘2’s pot with John
Feehan.
Wednesday, August 27, Burapha A & B – 2-man scramble
1st Paul Smith & Tom Byrne 63.6
2nd Peter Henshaw & Ed Delaney 67.45
3rd Christian Boysen & Nick Shaw 67.68
The day was a celebration of the ‘Donkey’s’ birthday in the form of a
scramble, in this case the two person variety, and an Englishman, Paul
Smith, and a Irishman, Tom Byrne, combined their considerable talents to lap
the field by 3.39 strokes.
The second and third placed teams were separated by just point 0.23 of a
stroke; the all Irish combination of Peter ‘the silver surfer’ and Ed
Delaney took the runners up spot leaving Christian Boysen and Nick Elvis’
Shaw in third place.
After the presentation, Colin thanked sponsors Bobby and Dipty, Ferdinand
Bar, the girls from the Ferdinand Bar, the Phantom Bar, Nick Shaw and Diablo
Steak House. Colin laid on the Lewiinski’s famous buffet which was enjoyed
by all and a big thanks to Nick Shaw and Jim Reid for their entertainment on
the karaoke.
Friday, August 29, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Adam Barton (15) 43pts
2nd Colin Davis (15) 39pts
3rd Kevin Rogers (10) 36pts
B Flight
1st Lou Szigligeti (18) 35pts
2nd Jim Reid (25) 31pts
3rd Brian Cooper (25) 30pts
The low handicappers showed their mettle at Mountain Shadow as the only
three players to match or better their handicap came from A Flight. Adam
Barton was the man of the match with a blistering 43 points, Colin ‘the
Donkey’ Davis trotted off with the silver with a very creditable 39 points
and Aussie star Kevin Rogers closed the flight on a solid even par round.
The mere mortals in B Flight wilted under the pressure as the 35 points from
Lou Zig-zag took the top podium spot. Lou was four clear of the new Pattaya
singing sensation Jim Reid while Brian ‘Mini’ Cooper was glad to see any
part of the podium with 30 points.
Adam Barton, Colin Davis, Paul Smith and Jim Reid shared the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near
Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name
to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Stafford sets the standard
at 4th Syd LeBron Memorial Putter tourney
PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar
John Stafford with Brad Jordison (right) and
Mike Missler (left).
Monday, August 25, Burapha - Stableford
With 50 players on tour in Hua Hin there was only a small field
of 7 players at Burapha on Monday, playing the A & B nines from the white
tees. The comp was won by Kerry Beck with 34 points, beating Bob Finley on
count back. There were no ‘2’s.
1st Kerry Beck (13) 34pts
2nd Bob Finley (13) 34pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (22) 33pts
Monday, August 25, Springfield G.C. - Stableford
On Sunday morning around 50 golfers and friends left Pattaya for
the four hour journey to Hua Hin to play in the 4th Syd LeBron Memorial
Putter tournament, to join a number of Aussie boys who had already found
their way there. This is the second of two competitions the Outback organise
every year to Hua Hin, where they a play the wonderful Black Mountain and
Banyan courses plus one other, this time being the turn of the Jack Nicklaus
designed, Springfield.
First tee time was 10 a.m. but the course was busy so we could not get away
earlier and unfortunately our first two groups were both three-balls who
found the pace of play quite slow, as walking players in front were just
ambling around. Nevertheless, the course was in great condition even if the
pace of the greens varied a little and although we played from the white
tees, most found it long enough.
Two big hitting Aussies found themselves at the top Div A, namely Craig
Brown and Brad Jordison, both with 38pts and they were followed home by
Martin Grimoldby and Chris Voller on 36 and 35pts respectively.
Div B was taken by one of the firm favourites, the improving Kim Danboise
with 37pts ahead of Siam Old Course member, Mick Leighton on 36. In third
was the jovial Harry Vincenzi (35) and fourth, Denis Steele (33).
Another firm favourite, John Stafford, fresh from his third place finish in
the Race2Bkk, continued his spectacular form to win Div C with 38pts, as
Bryan Rought and Bob Poole took second and third, both with 36 and fourth
going to Steve Taylor (33).
The scoring in Div D was markedly lower than usual as Bruce McAdam (33) hit
the top spot and Tim Knight (32) was second, David Davies (31) occupied
third place and a very surprised Suzi took fourth with 29.
There were eight ‘2’s from Mick Leighton, Mike Cahill, Mike Missler, Steve
Mann, Colin Hoole, Murray Hart, Ray Dell and Craig Brown.
Div A (0-12)
1st Craig Brown (06) 38pts
2nd Brad Jordison (07) 38pts

Tuesday, August 26, Black Mountain - Stableford
We had heard so many stories about the condition of Black
Mountain and all the construction work going on that I was prompted to ring
the course to request a further discount from the normal festival fee.
Needless to say, it fell on deaf ears but they did promise to look after us
extremely well.
The course was virtually empty compared with Springfield, enabling us to get
away about 20 minutes earlier than the scheduled tee time. About four of the
holes had had some work done to the front of the greens which had been
stitched back in extremely well and did not really interfere with play
whilst all the greens had been cored and sanded, mostly half at a time and
did not cause too many problems as the greens were generally running at a
good pace.
On the tenth there was some major work going on with a new water feature
which runs right the way down the left hand side from the tee box before
crossing over to the right just beyond the drive landing area. We did have
to negotiate round that a bit but it again wasn’t really a problem unless
you wanted it to be, but I’m sure it will be great when it’s finished.
Again some great scores, the best by Bernie Stafford who posted 40pts to win
Div C, which was really a computer software error as he should have been in
Div B. Another Stafford, this time John, took second place with 39pts and
Greg Hill and John Lawton returned 34 and 33 respectively for the minor
places.
Hot favourite Andre Coetzee won Div A with 38pts, beating steady contender
Mike Missler on count back and two more 7 handicappers took third and
fourth, namely Brad and Jim Brackett.
John Pegrum (37) won the B division ahead of Denis Steele (35), Harry (33)
and John Player, also with 33 whilst the D Div was again won with just
33pts, this time by David Davies, with Barney (32), BMX (31) and Bob Mattes
(also 31) just behind.
There were six more ‘2’s today from Craig Brown, who had two on the 11th and
the 14th, Ray Dell and Greg Hill both on the 11th and Bernie Stafford (8th)
and Martin Grimoldby(14th).
At the turn, Joe (the new Black Mountain manager) had a chat with me about
looking after the group regarding the condition of the course, “Would a
couple of hundred bottles of Singha take care of the problem?” Well you
certainly did us proud, with a virtually endless supply of free beer
supplemented by ample portions of French fries and dips – a very generous
and great gesture Black Mountain and well noted by all.
Div A (0-12)
1st Andre Coetzee (07) 38pts
2nd Mike Missler (07) 38pts
3rd Brad Jordison (07) 37pts
4th Jim Brackett (07) 37pts
Div B (13-16)
1st John Pegrum (13) 37pts
2nd Denis Steele (15) 35pts
3rd Harry Vincenzi (15) 33pts
4th John Player (16) 33pts
Div C (17-20)
1st Bernie Stafford (16) 40 pts
2nd John Stafford (18) 39 pts
3rd Greg Hill (17) 34 pts
4th John Lawton (19) 33 pts
Div D (21+)
1st David Davies (23) 33pts
2nd Barney Clarkson (24) 32pts
3rd Brian Maddox (24) 31pts
4th Bob Mattes (23) 31pts
Thursday, August 28, Banyan G.C. - Stableford
After the rest day for many, although some ventured out to play 9
holes of the par 3 course at Black Mountain and I believe one or two
threatened to play Royal Hua Hin, the final round was as usual at Banyan. A
little later start than normal here as the course was apparently busy (but
it wasn’t) but everybody showed up which always makes the starters life a
little easier.
The meet and greet service was back up to normal and Banyan had made the
effort to produce Outback scorecards for the day. The course looked a little
brown round the edges, not so much through the lack of rain but more because
their generators had been down but one or two players did comment that it
wasn’t up to its best. As well as that, we found out later that the course
had been set up fairly short, which was again somewhat disappointing,
however I had a chat about that with Stuart (the manager) and he said when
we return in March, he will set it up the length we want.
So with a short course and once again ideal weather, the scoring was bound
to be keen, one only has to look at Div C, where there were three players
all with 41pts - Bob Poole, John Stafford and John Lawton – poor old Sugar
had to be content with fourth with his 37!
Denis Steele won Div B with 38pts, beating Harry Vincenzi on count back,
with John Pegrum, who won the longest drive contest as he drove to Pattaya
and back on Wednesday to renew his visa, still having enough energy to score
37pts to take third.
Rod Crosswell lost two shots as he and Steve Taylor both played the wrong
ball – just a case of Aussie & British language interpretation. Steve said
to Rod, “Are you playing a Titleist ‘too’?” “Yes” said Rod, so Steve went
ahead and hit Rod’s Titleist four!
As usual with these three day tournaments, the leaders go out last, they
being John Stafford (2 day total 77), Brad Jordison (75), Mike Missler (73)
and Bernie Stafford (72) – they came in with Mike Missler (42) winning Div
A, John Stafford (41) 2nd Div C, Brad Jordison (41) 2nd Div A and Bernie
falling away a bit with 34. What fantastic scoring from the last group.
There were only two ‘2’s from Craig Brown (again!) and Mike Missler.
Presentation for all three days went ahead at about 4.30 and Jack welcomed
everybody to the 4th Syd LeBron Memorial Putter and particularly the eleven
IPGC guys who joined in with the tour so spiritedly marking a great five
days of golf when the differences between handicap systems were put aside.
Well done to everybody for being punctual at all the events and well done
again to every single one of you who attended the presentation – and that
was everybody – and that’s a first! Thanks also to Rod Crosswell for his
spirited “Nearest the pin prizes’ and thanks also to John Stafford for
ringing the bell back at the shortly to be Outback Golf Bar in Hua Hin.

Wong takes the win at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Henry Wong.
Monday, August 25,
Khao Kheow – Stableford
1st Henry Wong (21) 39pts
2nd Kenny Chung (25) 38pts
3rd Andre Vandyk (15) 36pts
Today it was a trip to Khao Kheow and we checked in using the new vouchers,
which was slow because the reception staff was not briefed on it. But we
still got off C1 25 minutes ahead of our scheduled tee-off time in overcast
and hot conditions with a threat of a thunder storm on the second nine.
The course was in good condition but most fairways needed cutting. Henry
Wong was the winner on the day with 39 points, one up on Kenny Chung in
second while Andre Vandyk completed the podium in third with an even par 36.

Tuesday, August 26, Greenwood – Stableford
Well it was a Tuesday and we went to the golf course and it rained.
So we got wet, finished the round and went back to Bert’s. You know when all is
said and done that is all it is really. However, we all know that is not what
the day is all about. It is about meeting with a group of friends and going out
with them to have a great day out. It is about the whole experience from meeting
at Bert’s and the smell of coffee as some also some partake in a Tropical Bert’s
golfers’ breakfast; then the day starts.
Tuesday’s top three with one of
Bert’s finest.
It is about a really good course that on this day was in
really good condition with greens that were fast and true even though the rain
not only slowed them down but also took the best part of an hour from the day as
we all dove to find cover. Even the rain break added to the day though as the
large group in the rest stop laughed and joke the whole time.
Sitting In the restaurant all was well as the results came in until one score
was seen to be so far in front of the rest. So back at Bert’s it was soon time
to declare the results, not forgetting that this was also the last Tuesday of
the month and it was time for the MBMG golfer of the month award. The winner on
the day was Doug Maiko with an amazing 44 points while Barry Elphick came in
second with 39, Mark West took third with 36 and in fourth was ‘The Warberger’
Dick Warberg with 35.
So the winner of the MBMG Group golfer of the month was the aforementioned Doug
Maiko, well done Doug! Then came the hard work of trying to get him (Doug) to
buy the ‘organiser’ a beer for all his hard work.
Near Pins: Andrew Purdie, Simon Niven, Derek Brook.
Friday August 29, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
On this Friday the Tropical Bert’s group headed out to Pattaya
Country Club. After so many “long drive” courses recently, including Wangjuntr
and Greenwood, it was a welcome change to go to perhaps the closest course in
the area.
Mark West (left) with Kurt
Ebentheuer (right) and one of Bert’s helpers.
Despite the convenient location there was some anxiety about
playing at PCC. The course has been going through quite a bit of maintenance
lately, and despite their good intentions much of the work was so excessive
perhaps the course should have been closed for a few weeks. Well, after a full
round in fine weather, we are happy the report that Pattaya Country Club is
coming into its own. A couple fairways and greens made you wonder if you
actually landed in a bunker, but overall the course is now in very good shape,
and considering the distance, represents perhaps the best value in the area.
Pattaya C.C. is a very playable course that usually presents scores good for the
ego, and this day was no different. First place was claimed by Kurt Ebentheuer
(H/cap 35) with an impressive 39 points. Well played Kurt! This was a perfect
sendoff for him as he is leaving Thailand for several weeks. Second spot went to
Mark West (13) with 38 points, followed by Alan Sullivan (10) with 37. The last
two prize spots found Karl Beter (30) winning on count back over Landis Brooks
(7), both with 36 points.
Near Pins: Dick Warberg, John Hackett, Alan Sullivan, Mark West

Wonders never cease
The Backyard Golf Society
‘The Quiet Man’ caught handing over a larger than
normal gratuity.
Last Friday’s Backyard golf outing at Emerald on August 29
produced a mind-boggling first, something no one has ever seen before or likely
to ever see again. In a moment reminiscent of the paparazzi pursuing Lady Di, a
sneak photo (well done Bob) was taken of ‘The Quiet Man’ vastly exceeding his
normal tip to a caddy and handing over a 500 baht note. If we did not have the
evidence no one would believe it but fortunately for ‘Mr. Quiet’ he had earlier
found 1,000 baht so he decided he would share his good luck.
In another twist that is sure to lead to complications in the future, the caddy
in question was ‘Diet Whiskey’s’ regular (he was unable to play due to some
disturbing rumblings in the nether region) so he may be required to hand over
the same amount next game!
On to the golf and the winner on the day with 38 points was Irish John, with the
same player also taking the only near pin. All bar one player won at least 1
skin with ‘The Biss’ winning 6, Andy (and back for a new season) “The Deadliest
Catch” Crabb 5, ‘Second-hand Bob’ (soon to depart back to the stall on
Portobello Road) won 3 and there were 2 each to ‘The Quiet Man’ and ‘Irish
John’. Only Russell “He’s a Victorian” was skinless but with his new driver
going well he is sure to change that soon, especially as he has decided to stick
around full-time for the rest of the year.

Phillip and Dabber take the medals
IPGC golf from The Haven
Mike Dabanovich,Phil Cass & Shuichi Kodaka.
Monday, August 25, Greenwood A & B - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Shuichi Kodaka (19) 38pts
2nd Don Everett (19) 33pts
3rd Allan Raaen (7) 33pts
4th Kevin Blake (8) 32pts
5th Mathew Badman (12) 31pts
Another week of extremely competitive golf, that saw the handicaps of many
of the players reduced and in some cases by three strokes for the week,
started fairly quietly at Greenwood where the B course was once again in
play for the first time for a little while, and combined with the A course
it made a fairly stern test for the day’s hopefuls.
Best of the day by a considerable margin was Shuichi Kodaka, who had
previously been left waiting in the wings on many occasions since his
handicap had increased to its current very competitive level. But this was
his day as he left the rest of the field trailing in his wake by five shots
and more to finish at two under handicap, and with the CSS moving out to 73
it was a very good return even allowing for the excellent condition of the
course.
Don Everett took second place after winning a count back over Allan Raaen,
scoring a better 18 to 14 after the latter had faded following a solid start
to the round, but Don’s application right through to the end made the
difference.
Kevin Blake took fourth place after struggling through the inward half but
showed signs that a return to the top of the podium and a lowering of
handicap cannot be too far in the future.
Mathew Badman started much too slowly to be able to make any impressions on
the leaders but did enough over the closing holes to lay claim to the last
and fifth spot on the podium.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Before the prize presentations were made there were welcome backs for
Phillip Cass, Rick Morgan, and Kevin Blake.
Wednesday, August 27, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Phillip Cass (20) 45pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (19) 42pts
3rd Don Everett (19) 39pts
4th Jon Yarrow (15) 36pts
5th Trevor Schirmer (14) 33pts
6th Mike Hill (21) 33pts
It has been a very long time since anyone from the group in Soi 13 has
played any of the combinations at Khao Kheow at nine under handicap, and
with the B and C courses set up at almost 6,500 yards it was even more
surprising to find that a usual winning score of three under handicap was
only to be found in third place.
But with the wind at its most benign and overcast skies that kept the
temperature down, to a tolerable level, and the condition of both nines in
tip top shape and even with completely different speeds of greens over the
two courses with one nine having missed out on a cut, it was an ideal set up
for scoring and ensured that the CSS for the day remained at a level 72.
Phillip Cass was the one to outdo his handicap by nine strokes on his way to
returning his best score ever in Pattaya, finishing with two 4-pointers and
seven 3-pointers in the process and a truly memorable day.
Shuichi Kodaka, having won on the previous outing must surely having been
looking forward to another day in the spotlight, as he returned his card at
six under for 42 points only blighted by a couple of 1-pointers on the
inward half and having gone out in five under handicap. It was not to be,
but his second good score under handicap ensured that he would be reduced
two shots for the coming week at least and left him having to settle for
just second spot.
Don Everett would also have thought he would be in the running with 39
points but he also was very surprised to find himself back in third with two
such excellent scores ahead of him at the scorer’s desk.
Jon Yarrow was playing for the first time in a while and left his two
playing partners, who both sported lower handicaps, in the shade, beating
them both by gross score on his way to a level round in fourth place.
Trevor Schirmer won a count back over Mike Hill, returning a better 16 to 14
to leave them in fifth and sixth respectively.
Rick Morgan cleared out the rollover ‘2’s pot in the first division while
Don Everett did likewise in the second division.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome for Jon Yarrow who had been
away for so long, some six years, he was considered as a new member.
Friday, August 29, Greenwood A & B - Monthly Medals
CSS 72
Division 1 (0–15)
1st Mike Dabanovich (14) net 64
2nd Mathew Badman (12) net 70
3rd Kevin Blake (8) net 70
Division 2 (16+)
1st Phillip Cass (20) net 72
2nd Terry Hodgkiss (23) net 74
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (19) net 74
No it is not a printer’s error, the competition was played at Greenwood for
the second time in the week as the group had earlier arrived at Treasure
Hill to find that there was a shotgun start scheduled for 12 noon, but
remembering the great condition of Greenwood and it being just around the
corner, following some quick telephone work the group set off from the first
tee just 20 minutes after their scheduled start.
After the fireworks of the previous outing there were high hopes that the
Monthly Medals would be keenly fought over, which they duly were in the
second division, the Medal going the way of the inform Phillip Cass who
finished with a level par round for his second win on the trot. Phillip was
two ahead of a count back between Terry Hodgkiss in second and Shuichi
Kodaka in third, with the latter not quite able to reproduce the form of his
last round over the back nine and losing that count back by 35.5 to 39.5
after again opening up with a two under front nine.
The rest of the first division was completely obliterated by Mike Dabanovich
who’s eight under score was the best seen in the division in a Monthly Medal
since Karl Holm had the same score in February 2005, and was an even a
better result as the final card did not show any score above a five and even
surprisingly just two threes for a very tidy card indeed. It was also ten
strokes better than his previous Medal win in July.
Mathew Badman just got the better of Kevin Blake after winning a count back
for second with a better 35.5 to 36.0.
There were no 2’s in either division for the second time in the week.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome back for Master Chef Mark Armstrong.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between

Smooth as silk – Brett bags an ‘Ace’
PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Society
Brett (left) collects his surprise
hole-in-one prize from Bob Philp.
Monday, August 25, Silky Oak - Stableford
With just three groups playing today we got away to an
early start thank goodness as we just got in as it started to pour down. Some
groups playing Green Valley only got in 15 holes as the rain was too heavy to
even think about playing. The course was in great condition with tricky greens
and grand fairways on which you couldn’t get a bad lie anywhere.
Sa and Owie with Brian Chapman.
A couple of drop outs today due to injuries
which was quite unfortunate but we will see you next year boys, you missed a
great few hours back at the Billabong with a lot of bell rings from Brett
Pinnington who managed the feat of getting a hole in one on the sixteenth. He
was told there was a surprise back at the bar for him as Doddy put up 10.000
baht for the first hole in one from any player playing at a Billabong golf
event. You should have seen his face when Capt Bob presented him with the cash.
A hearty congratulations mate from all here and thanks Doddy for the donation.
There were some good scores today with 37 taking third place, the hole in one
man took that placing, coming second was Mick Thomas with a fine 38 points and
first place went to Rosco with 39.
Wednesday, August 27, Green Valley - Stableford
It must have been the Billabong’s lucky week as we dodged
the rain yet again today at Green Valley. We were playing for the deVere trophy,
kindly sponsored by Brian Chapman of the deVere group as he does the last
Wednesday of each month with the twelve winners playing for the annual trophy at
the end of the year.
Today we had a somewhat depleted field but sometimes small is good for we all
had a great day out and with only two ladies it was up to Capt Bob and George
Barrie to look after them and a pleasure it was, as they came first and second.
Nichawan Khiaophuang (Sa) took the top spot with an amazing 42 points, certainly
a great round of golf, while Boribun Bangon (Owie), Sa’s good friend, placed
second on a count back over Capt Bob, both on 36 points.
The only ‘2’ of the day came on the eight, also from Owie and it was a great
putt curling downhill from about 15 feet.
Friday, August 29, Plutaluang - Stableford
The monthly scramble at Plutaluang East and South, with a
two tee start we were all away in record time with five groups off each tee.
There was no rain and it didn’t even threaten, but the lake is as low as the
scribe has ever seen it.
The course was in good condition but the greens were different on each nine with
the South greens being a little faster than East, however we all had to putt on
them. There were the usual stories about the putts that got away including my
own group. We had 17 goes at birdies and only got five in our team, but as
stated we all had the same greens to putt on.
There were three new teams on the podium today, which goes to show the Courtyard
Cavaliers are beatable. There were some good scores with less than four shots
from first to last place. Third place went to the team from the Players Lounge
consisting of Paul Bourke, Bob Newell, Simon Philbrook and Bobby Young with a
score of 59.5; second went to Arch Armstrong, Derek Mower, Peter Rooke and
Willie Mercer with a score of 59.2; but taking top spot was the team of Ted
Gardner, Noi Gardner, Rick Hyatt and Tony Oakes with a great score of 58.5.
Back at the bar it was all about the fun day out everyone had. The support for
this monthly event just keeps getting better and glad to see each team having a
great day out.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking
straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if you are
looking for a game.

Robbins finishes strong to snare monthly honours
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Tony Robbins (right) with
Thomas Nyborg, Mashi Kaneta and Rab McDonald.
Monday, August 25, Laem Chabang C & A –
Stableford
A disappointing turnout of golfers today for our fourth visit in
recent months to the championship course at Laem Chabang. Although the
course is more expensive than most of the venues we play (mainly due to the
compulsory carts) it’s still reasonable value at this time of year, and we
don’t have that many opportunities to play here due to the exorbitant high
season prices.
The clouds were gathering as we assembled on the first tee, and the first
shower of rain wasn’t long in coming, arriving as the leading group reached
the first green, but fortunately only lasted 10 minutes before we were able
to continue the round. The skies weren’t clearing though, and the next batch
of rain arrived as the leading group reached the sixth green and was
considerably heavier than the first, accompanied by heavy thunder and
lightning.
The fairways and greens quickly became flooded and the storm didn’t seem to
be going anywhere soon, so the majority of the field decided to call it a
day and take up the offer of a nine hole rain check. Four of the diehards
decided to sit it out (after all has anybody got a pressing appointment when
they’re out for a day’s golf?) and after a little over an hour the rain had
stopped and the course became playable again, allowing them to complete the
round, albeit in light persistent drizzle.
This was the first occasion this year that we’ve had the competition washed
out, but it still wasn’t a complete disaster and the four golfers that
completed the round thoroughly enjoyed it.
Wednesday, August 27, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
Thirteen golfers today for our trip to the Royal Lakeside course
which always provides a good test of golf. The fairways were in good
condition if a little dry, and the greens were excellent and as always
challenging. The weather was bright and sunny with a gentle breeze keeping
the temperature at an acceptable level, and we basically had the course to
ourselves.
Playing from the blue tees at 6,650 yards, several of the par fours play
long here, especially into the breeze so it was no surprise that no player
managed to play to his handicap on the day. The best performance of the day
was from Colin Greig with 35 points who edged first place from Raleigh
Gosney on a count back. Geoff Parker took third place one point behind the
leaders, and also edging out the unlucky Steve Durey on a count back.
We welcomed two new players today, Paul Allen and Gerry Keys, and Gerry made
an instant impact by securing one of the only three near pin prizes on the
day.
Tony Robbins had established a healthy lead in the race for the Golfer of
the Month title, but a disappointing performance from him today opened the
door to three other contenders heading for the final game on Friday.
1st Colin Greig (7) 35pts
2nd Raleigh Gosney (17) 35pts
3rd Geoff Parker (15) 34pts
Near Pins: Gerry Cooney, Geoff Cox and Gerry Keys.
Friday, August 29, Khaow Keow C & B – Stableford
Today was the day for the deciding game in the contest for the
Golfer of the Month title and we were allocated to play the C and B nines at
Khaow Keow. The four leading contenders, Tony Robbins, Colin Greig (both on
51 points), Geoff Parker and Raleigh Gosney (a couple of points behind) were
playing in the same group, and we teed off in cool conditions under an
overcast sky.
The fairways were soft following overnight rain and since carts were
confined to paths only, we elected to play “pick clean and place” on closely
mown areas.
Geoff Parker made a poor start and Raleigh Gosney was struggling a little,
so it was soon obvious that the contest was going to be fought out between
the two leading contenders with Colin Greig completing the outward nine with
18 points, closely followed by Tony Robbins carding 17 points. Tony came
back strongly on the inward nine and when Colin found the water on the
difficult par four 7th hole on the B course, the contest was effectively
over, with Tony eventually coming home with a back nine score of 20 points.
Tony’s score of 37 points was enough to secure first place on the day and
also take the Golfer of the Month title in style, whilst Colin finished in
4th place losing out to Steve Durey on a count back. Geoff Hart made a
welcome return to the podium taking second place spot with 35 points, and
Les Burns continued his new found success on the par threes taking yet
another near pin prize.
1st Tony Robbins (13) 37pts
2nd Geoff Hart (22) 35pts
3rd Steve Durey (20) 33pts
4th Colin Greig (7) 33pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Tony Robbins, Steve Durey and Les Burns.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who play on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for
breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome. Contact

Reed sails to victory at Navy
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Lindsay Phillips & Burnie Sinclair.
Monday, August 25, Plutaluang –
Stableford
A small contingency were playing in Hua Hin this week so the
numbers were down a bit for all our outings here at home.
We normally alternate the four nines at Navy but upon booking a few
months ago the management was not sure which nine would be closed, so we
left it to our caddies to arrange the courses and upon arrival the East
was shut and we were allocated the North and West nines, which everyone
was happy about.
Driving towards the course the clouds were looking threatening and after
we had played six holes the skies opened with horrendous rain for 15 to
20 minutes. When it had stopped we resumed playing without the need to
adopt ‘pick, clean and place.’
The cut today was 10-19 and 20+ in division 2 and still in form Chris
Reed topped the second division with 39 points. Bryan Prisetley came in
second a whole 12 points behind and in third place (15 points behind)
was Burnie Sinclair.
Barney Sheedy won the honours in division 1 with 34 points ahead of Ted
Lodge, who took second place on count back over Lindsay Phillips after
the both came in with 32 points each.
Mike Chatt and Terry Madsen claimed the near pins in division 1 and
Eiichi Matsumoto and Chris Reed cleaned up in division 2.
We said bon voyage to Ted Lodge today, see you soon Ted.
Wednesday, August 27, The Emerald - Stableford
Only one division out today and this was our first visit for
a couple of months to Emerald due to the renovation on the course, but
it has improved and there were no moans.
Tom Novak, playing off 21, won the day with 38 points, with Chris Reed
taking second on 35 and Alan Hansen third with 34.
There we no ‘2’s in either division.
Friday, August 29, Eastern Star - Stableford
There were only six groups out today with the cut at 9-17 and
18+ in the two divisions and playing off 16 Alan Hansen won division 1
with 39 points. Wilf Latham came in second, beating Jeff Cargill 20/16
on a back-nine count back after they both came in with 35 points.
In the second division, 35 points was enough for Tom Novak to win again,
with the organizer in second place two points behind and Chris Reed in
third on 32.
There were no ‘2’s in the top division but four came in division 2, from
Glyn Evans on the 3rd, Chris Reed and Frank Kelly on the 6th and Miss
Nut from 6ft away on the 17th.
Near pins went to Mikael Andersson, Jeff Cargill, Wilf Latham, Miss Nut,
Glyn Evans, Joe Kubon and Chris Reed.

Emerald – good but no gem
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at The Elephant Bar
Monday’s top four: Andrew
Purdie, Jon Batty, Ken Grimes and David Thomas.
The Pattaya Golf Society ventured south to Ban Chang on
Monday 25 August to play the once hugely popular Emerald Golf Course. It was
popular for two reasons; location and layout. The layout is as close to a
links-type setup as Pattaya offers, whilst the proximity to what many reckon
the best 19th hole in golf also has appeal. Poor course maintenance,
however, has let this place down in recent years, and it shows.
The broad-leaf grass can give flat lies, making clean ball contact
difficult. This coupled with links-type undulating lies makes Emerald a
genuine test of golf. What isn’t genuine, in terms of a fair test, are the
number of bare patches on fairways. Whether these be close to the green, or
mid-fairway, they can and do result in a good shot being penalised with an
extremely difficult lie, requiring a clean hit off deadpan (mud) or stony
surfaces.
This problem could be reduced by more liberal use of white GUR lines. They
are there, but only in the occasional spot, and are fading, fast. Because of
this we always insist on preferred lies, but the six-inch leeway is often
not enough.
Friday’s winner Craig Thomas
with Aki Tate and Gary Bolger.
One other niggle; Emerald’s green-fee-caddie-fee charge
to us, in low season, is 1,250 baht. That puts it well above courses such as
Greenwood, Mountain Shadow, Treasure Hill, Pattana, Khao Kheow and Bangpra,
to name a few. Sorry Emerald, the presentation of your course is not in the
same league as those mentioned, yet you charge more?
Our five groups got away on time. There was little traffic on the course, so
the early starters enjoyed a fast, uninterrupted pace. As they approached
the end of their round, these leading groups felt the first drops of rain.
The black sky above, threatening for some time, was about to drop its load.
If you think this scribe was in the latter groupings, you would be right.
We sheltered under the dilapidated, wall-less hut at the 14th tee, while the
storm vented its anger. We were not going anywhere. By the time it had
abated, 40-odd minutes had passed. TiT.
Given the number in the competition (19), it was decided to pay out the
first four places. Back at the Elephant Bar the presentation noted the
absence of ‘2’s, but commended the podium placers, especially those that
equalled or bettered net-par. Whatever the conditions, beating par on this
course represents an excellent round of golf.
The lucky beer draw was won by Dane Jesper Hansen, whilst the booby bevvy
was given to the departing Joe Miller, in recognition of his imminent
departure to Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
1st Jon Batty (10) 39pts
2nd Ken Grimes (17) 38pts
3rd Andrew Purdie (11) 36pts
4th David Thomas (9) 34pts
Captain sets the standard
The Pattaya Golf Society chose Bangpra as the venue for its
August monthly medal event on Wednesday, August 27, and found the course in
excellent condition with dry fairways giving some welcome “run” and
consistent and quick greens. Good and experienced course management have so
far defied the recent heavy rains and prepared a track which is better than
most in the province at present.
The weather stayed dry, except for a ten minute shower and conditions were
perfect for some quality golf. And that’s what we saw. Medal play requires a
different “mindset” where golfers play the course and not within the comfort
zone of their handicap and golfers who can manage the course accordingly
usually score reasonably well.
As it turned out three golfers coped with the challenge, with one going way
beyond what was expected. In third place was Monday’s winner Jon Batty
(H/cap 10) whose game stuttered on the back nine after a reasonable start to
leave him with net 79. Second place saw Mr Len (27), buoyed by a positive
verdict from the hospital the day before, defying the odds to record a net
78, his one bad hole being the result of a trainee caddy talking at the
crucial point of his downswing. However he still allowed himself a rare
smile at his round.
The winner gave a master-class in iron play with approach shots rarely more
than a few feet from the hole. Club Captain David Thomas (9) showed all the
class of six years ago before his exile in the outback curtailed his golf
and his gross 76, net 67, will not be beaten this year in terms of true
golfing quality. Superlatives defy this correspondent but nine long months
of dedication and practice have deservedly paid off for the Kiwi.
There was one birdie ‘2’, Dave Edwards achieving the feat on the second hole
and Gary Bolger won the non-winners’ beer draw.
There is no better backdrop to an excellent round of golf and this is
precisely what Bangpra provided for the PGS monthly medal.
Fitting finale for Craig Thomas
The Pattaya Golf Society ended its August golf with a visit to
the revamped course at Pattavia which continues to offer splendid value in
terms of course presentation and green fee. Fairways are well grassed and
cut, bunkers are coarse but well kept and the greens are very consistent but
a real challenge to putt on as “grain” plays a major part in the assessment
of the line and pace. The staff and the clubhouse offer a warm welcome and
the caddies there are unique as on the eighteenth green they “thank” the
golfers with a polite “wai”.
What of the golf? Scores were good and an excellent joust took place for the
podium places with Japanese golfer Akifumi Tate recording 38 points for
third place. Ahead by one was Aussie Gary Bolger whose golf was top quality
with the bonus of two birdie ‘2’s, on the fourth and thirteenth holes, and
he finished with 39 points. The winner, Craig Thomas, played the best round
of his life with forty points on a day when all shots were true and accurate
and there was no more fitting a way to draw the line under his current
visit.
The bar’s beer bonus went to Larry Ang and the Booby Bevy went to Jesper
Hansen who called a two shot penalty on himself when his caddy picked his
ball up on the first green, unaware of the local IPGC “one chance” rule for
caddy “mistakes”. Interestingly, Gary Bolger also called a penalty on
himself on the seventeenth for a double hit, which none of his group
noticed. The etiquette and integrity of PGS golfers continues to set high
standards. So also did the course at Pattavia.

Scribe sparkles at Crystal Bay
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Neil Bramley - winner at Emerald.
Andy Rich
We all got lucky this week and some more than others. With
September fast approaching the skies took on a more threatening face
and the thunderstorms were gathering and growling just over the
horizon, but somehow us golfers all managed to avoid getting wet. I
am sure that over the next few weeks we shall not get so lucky and
it will be umbrellas at the ready.
Golfers though are a hardy lot and I should imagine we all get up in
the morning looking forward to the new challenge and another chance
of playing the best round of the year. Mostly by the end of the day
reality has hit home and most golfers are feeling anything from
mildly deflated to beaten to a pulp. Still, after a couple of beers
we all come back for more.
Monday, August 25, Greenwood - Stableford
Well let me tell you this week some good things happened.
On Monday at Greenwood (A and B courses) Jim Cooper started the week
off in style by taking over the top spot from Charlie Cox and Derek
Thorogood, who for the time being have headed off over the horizon.
Andy Rich - winner at Crystal Bay.
In second place was Fergus Brennan who is still suffering with his
eyesight problems. He finds it difficult enough to see the ball on
the tee never mind where he has hit it, so I am guessing that his 32
points and second place on Monday must have given him quite a lift.
Bob Cannon, showing some good form of late, took third place.
1st Jim Cooper (15) 34pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (13) 32pts
3rd Robert Cannon (20) 31pts
Wednesday, August 27, The Emerald - Stableford
On Wednesday the TRGG headed off to Emerald and two
golfers did a very unusual thing. They both came away with a ‘2’ on
their scorecard. Nothing unusual there I hear you say but let me
explain that this was not on par 3 holes but both of them chipped in
with their second shot on par 4 holes.
Those two golfers were Neil Bramley and Jim Cooper who came first
and second respectively. German Odermatt couldn’t match that and had
to settle for third.
1st Neil Bramley (8) 37pts
2nd Jim Cooper (15) 35pts
3rd German Odermatt (12) 33pts
Friday, August 29, Crystal Bay - Stableford
It was off to Crystal Bay (C and A courses) on Friday.
Now I may have mentioned before that Crystal Bay is the only golf
course in the world where I have had a hole in one so I look on it
as a lucky course for me. Once again it didn’t disappoint and for
once I had one of those red letter days that don’t tend to come
round that often. I romped home with 39 points, which was good
enough for first place.
Bob Cannon had another good day finishing in second and Wednesday’s
winner Neil Bramley had to settle for third on the day.
1st Andy Rich (20) 39pts
2nd Robert Cannon (20) 37pts
3rd Neil Bramley (8) 36pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would
like to play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus
Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee
and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice
board.

Fred Dineley wins his second Monthly Mug
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Mashi Kaneta, Ron Gillett, Fred Dineley
& Sandy Leiper.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, August 25, Mountain Shadow –
Stableford
It was an overcast Monday morning in Pattaya and our
first game of the week was at the challenging Mountain Shadow Golf
Course. There were 2 late withdrawals due to illness (genuine) which
brought our numbers down to 22 and we assembled at The Growling Swan
in readiness for our departure.
We welcomed Simon Niven from Darwin in the Northern Territory of
Australia and the return of veteran Ted Morris playing with us once
again. Fond farewells were handed out to Gerd Riedler and Keith
Buchanan.
After arriving at the course and checking in we were told we would
be starting off the 10th tee so off we went and our first group, a
three-ball, got away 20 minutes ahead of schedule. The skies were
threatening above and it wasn’t long before the rain came but not
enough to disrupt play and having very little adverse effect on the
golf course which was in fine shape. The rain continued for a while
but eventually stopped as we continued at a cracking pace and even
after a 5 minute break at the half way mark we completed our full
round in three hours & forty five minutes.
Stephen Newton, Paul
Jackson & Martin Todd.
We had 2 divisions – Division A for handicaps 0 to 14
& Division B for golfers on handicaps of 15 and over with three places
in each division. There were also rewards for nearest the pin on the par
threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
Martin “Toddy” Todd continued his fine form in winning the A Division
with 39 points, 3 points ahead of Mashi Kaneta in second spot and your
writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn was third with 34.
It was a count back to decide the winner in B Division with 2 golfers on
39 points and that resulted in Stephen Newton (20 point back nine) being
declared the winner from Keith “Kissy” Buchanan (17 point back nine) in
second place, with Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei finishing third
with 33 points.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, awarded for the worst score on the day,
was won by Paul Jackson.
Division A (0-14)
1st Martin Todd (8) 39pts
2nd Mashi Kaneta (14) 36pts
3rd Peter Blackburn (11) 34pts
Division B (15+)
1st Stephen Newton (29) 39pts
2nd Keith Buchanan (15) 39pts
3rd Alain Taddei (16) 33pts
Near Pins: 5th – Bill Steinman, 8th - Ted Morris, 15th – Bill Steinman,
17th – John Davis
Long Putts: 9th – Tiziano Dal Pastro, 18th – Peter Blackburn
Thursday, August 28, Khao Kheow C & B – Stroke/Monthly Mug
It was that time again when we play our one and only stroke round of the
month in competing for the Growling Swan Monthly Mug and this month’s
challenge was at the popular Khao Kheow Golf Club.
A couple of late withdrawals brought our numbers down a tad but we were
still left with an excellent “Low Season” field of 31 golfers ready to
compete for the 27th Mug. We welcomed back David “Fletch” Fletcher, here
on some R & R from his work in Western Australia and Marco Beer, who is
once more visiting from Switzerland. It was also time to say farewell to
Tony Campbell who will shortly be returning to the cold of Melbourne,
Australia.
We arrived at the course to find things rather quiet as seems to be the
norm at most golf courses at the minute. Checking in was a bit slow as
we had green fee vouchers and quite rightly the staff insisted on seeing
PSC membership cards for those using the vouchers but we were soon
reporting to the Starter who informed us that we would be playing the C
& B nines in that sequence.
With no-one in sight ahead of us our first group teed off right on time
at 10.00 am and with the fairways being a bit wet winter rules were in
play. The weather was perfect, not too hot with a slight breeze and the
golf course was in very good shape although the greens appeared to be
just a little slower than normal.
One of our group who had been involved in a motor cycle accident the
previous day unfortunately had to pull out after two holes as he
realized that his injured hand was not up to the rigors of playing a
game of golf so we were down to a three-ball. We soon caught up to a
Thai lady 5-ball group who were extremely loud & rowdy and did not
appreciate being asked to please keep it a bit quieter and after they
let us through after the second hole on our back nine one of the ladies
had plenty to say for herself. A couple of holes later this “lady” came
out with a stream of abuse to the caddy of one of our group which left
the caddy in tears – absolutely unacceptable on a golf course and JP &
myself made a trip to see the Golf Course Manager once our round was
completed.
Despite the interruptions ours was a very enjoyable round of golf which
took just four hours although our golf was not that “flash”.
In addition to the Monthly Mug award we were able to have 2 divisions
with 5 prizes in each division. There were also rewards for nearest the
pins all the par threes and longest first putts on the B9 & C9 greens.
Fred Dineley won his second Growling Swan Monthly Mug with a sizzling
net 66, just one better than Mashi Kaneta who was declared the winner in
A Division, with Thientong Charoenrung finishing second after a net 70.
The consistent Martin “Toddy” Todd came third with net 72 and Marco Beer
was fourth after scoring a net 73. With 2 golfers on net 74 a count back
was required to determine fifth spot and it was Stuart “San Miguel”
Rifkin (net 34 back nine) who got the “chocolates” ahead of Takeshi
Hakozaki (net 37 back nine).
In Division B the winner was Ron Gillett who complained about the course
being too tough for a round of stroke after scoring a net 74 (they walk
amongst us), with Gary Monley finishing second with a net 75, one stroke
better than Dave Neal who was third with net 76. Geri “Birdy” Crilly
came fourth with a net 77 and Patrick Poussier was fifth with a net 79.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, was won by Sandy “Cindy Lauper” Leiper.
