Police intervention saves tourists
The Crime Suppression Division discovered an incident
in progress while on patrol on South Pattaya Beach across from a bevy of
beer bars. They saw 6 or 7 Thai teenagers trouncing a tourist, and
immediately stopped this and attempted to arrest everyone concerned. But
the timorous teenagers scattered and officers succeeded in arresting
only one, Mr. Saichon, 22, from Chumporn Province.
At the very same time, police found another group of teenagers attacking
a tourist a short distance away. Again, they only managed to apprehend
one of the young pugilists, Vinai (which means “self-discipline)
Aramchai, 21.
The 2 young men and the 2 tourists were taken to Pattaya Police Station.
The first victim, Mr. Rubinghaus, 60, a German national, told police he
was getting up to leave a beer bar when he noticed a group of teenagers
following him along Beach Road. They suddenly pounced and punched, then
attempted to steal his gold chain weighing 46 grams and the attached
medallion, weighing 15.3 grams. Rubinghaus thanked the police profusely
for if not for their intervention, he would have lost his valuables or
worse.
The second victim, Harry Sosschmidt, 53, also from Germany, told police
he was walking back to his hotel when Vinai asked him for a cigarette.
As he didn’t smoke he told the lad he didn’t have a cigarette to give
him. Harry said the youth began to punch and kick him with no less than
5 or 6 of his friends jumping into the fray. During the struggle, the
youths managed to take his wallet, which contained 6000 baht, and a
solid gold chain worth 500 US dollars.
Police warn all tourists going out at night to not wear valuable
ornaments as it is an invitation to thieves. Officers also advise
tourists not to take large amounts of cash or valuable documents with
them at night.
