Classroom wins after four defeats
On Sunday 13th August Banchang Sports Club held the
latest of their bi-monthly cricket matches against the Classroom Bar
Pattaya Land 2.
These events always create considerable interest and
this time was no exception with both teams and their supporters turning
out in full at the oval in Ban Chang.
The
Classroom Cricket Team looks proud in victory.
Ban Chang won the toss and decided to put the Classroom
boys in to bat first. The Classroom had a new secret weapon, Dean, whose
previous match in England was in the Bradford league some 3 years ago. He
made 104 not out in that game. With such a repetition it is no wonder that
the opposition tried to negotiate a transfer before the match started, but
Rob flatly declined the transfer.
The match was reduced to two 10 overs a side as it was
difficult to get some of the boys away from the nearby pub. The Classroom
made a daunting score of 92 for 3 in their first innings with Dean top
scoring with 29 not out and Ackers making 25 not out.
Ban Chang battled and were restricted to 57 for 6 in
their 10 overs with Mark making 22. Dean and Tony were Classroom’s two
best bowlers.
In their 2nd innings the Classroom made 64. Dean was
again top scorer with 20 and Mark making 18. David Garred, Classroom’s
star batsman replaced Rob for this 2nd innings but for the 1st time in 2
years he failed to lay bat on ball, falling to a magnificent catch by Mark
on the boundary. Classroom totaled 64 in their 2nd innings.
Ban Chang needed a total of 100 exactly in their 10
overs to win the match. They managed to score 23 for 3 after seven overs.
With no chance of making 77 runs in 3 overs Andy, the Ban Chang captain
conceded the match.
The match was played in a very friendly atmosphere and
everyone had a great time. The next game will be at the Pattaya Oval on
Sunday 8th October. Anyone interested in playing can contact Scotty at the
Classroom Pattaya Land 2.
Hakkinen actually cracks a smile
Reprimanded later by Erja the Ice Maiden
Mika Hakkinen in the McLaren Mercedes scored a good win
in the damp conditions at Spa in Belgium, to move him a few more points
away from second placed Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari, with Ralf
Schumacher in the BMW Williams joining big brother on the podium for
third.
The race began behind the safety car, in rainy
conditions, with all teams running full wet tyres. Hakkinen kept his lead
from Trulli in the Jordan, with young Jenson Button in the second BMW
Williams right on his tail, then Michael Schumacher.
Trulli
spins out of contention and the race
The young Englishman had the bit between his teeth and
was obviously revelling in the wet conditions, being all over Trulli like
a rash. On the third lap Button was through, only to run wide and Trulli
took the 2nd spot back again. Later in the lap, Button tried again, but
had the door firmly shut by Trulli, while Schumacher slipped the Ferrari
down the inside to relegate the BMW Williams to 4th. Experience, treachery
and animal cunning beat youth and enthusiasm every time!
On the 4th lap, Schumacher squeezed past Trulli and
Button tried to slip through the same hole touching the Jordan mid corner
and Trulli spun out of contention and the race. In the waltzing manoeuvre
that followed, Button’s teammate Ralf Schumacher speared through to take
3rd place.
Unnoticed while all this drama was unfolding, Jean
Alesi in the evil and unreliable Prost shot into the pits to be the first
driver to revert to dry tyres, and then dramatically leap-frogged his way
through the field in a wonderful display of “ballsanall” opposite lock
driving. The others followed suit into the pits and by lap 9 all were now
on dry weather tyres. Hakkinen was still in the lead, followed by Big
Schumi, Little Schumi and Jean Alesi!
Lap 13 and Hakkinen got two wheels up on the kerbing
and gracefully spun, but kept all four corners clear of immovable objects
and continued, but now in 2nd place with the Ferrari fans hysterical as
Schumacher the elder took the lead.
By lap 29 all the top 10 had pitted again for fuel and
tyres, with Schumacher still in front and leading Hakkinen by 5 seconds,
Ralf Schumacher in 3rd with Barrichello in the second Ferrari 11 seconds
adrift, Alesi was 5th by 3 seconds and Button 6th and Coulthard 7th and
looking nothing like championship material.
Still the action continued, with Barichello’s Ferrari
crying enough on lap 32, closely followed by Alesi’s Prost which
fractured a fuel line, bringing the French Sicilian’s gutsy drive to a
close.
By this stage, Hakkinen was catching Schumacher’s
Ferrari, but was unable to find a way through, Schumi being the past
master in producing a very wide Ferrari. However, on lap 40 Hakkinen
pulled a brilliant overtaking manoeuvre on Schumacher as they both passed
Zonta’s BAR, Schumi on the left and Hakkinen on the right carrying right
through and getting past the Ferrari as they got to the corner. Schumacher
admitting at the press interview later that there was nothing he could do
to prevent it - though he would like to have tried!
Hakkinen won by 1.1 seconds from Schumacher who was 37
seconds in front of brother Ralf, with Coulthard 4th and Button 5th and
Frentzen in the Jordan 6th.
The Championship standings, with four races to go are
Hakkinen 74, M. Schumacher 68, Coulthard 61 and Barichello 49. The next
race is at Monza on the 10th of September.
PH3 Run 860
Another run, number 860 bites the dust with 102 turning
up in perfect conditions after a much-welcomed short bus ride. The circle
started with the usual christening of the new shoes. Maybe Sir Airhead has
shares in a shoe shop, he seems to be sponsoring all these lovely girls each
week and buying them new shoes. Is it just another excuse to get a free
beer? As usual, Needle Dick arrives just as the run started, no wonder he
has the Hash S@#t award. Is it because of his lack of navigational
abilities?
Well what an event, just so many people getting lost has
to be some sort of a record. Now we all know that the average IQ of the
Hashers is around 50. I think now this figure has to be reviewed as judging
by the number of people losing trail I think the average is now way down.
The hash hero has undoubtedly got to be Stealth P. who rescued, on his
motorbike, two at a time, about 10 dusky maidens who lost their way and
helped plenty of others back to the A site.
Back to the circle, yours truly Baby’s Arm was promoted
from lowly visitor status to the ethereal heights of a full blown Pattaya
Hash runner. What an achievement, all I get is to be the hash scribe. Wonder
if I can I get second prize and do it two weeks in a row? Ewok did her usual
superb job on the raffle. I won my first prize ever last week, bought more
tickets this week and surprise, surprise got FA.
The best icing of the night was, would you believe Sir
Airhead. Can you believe he got caught with no helmet moving his bike 10
metres? Serves him right, he should know that the police are very diligent
here on certain days of the month. Fini the F, what a joke, is it any wonder
he wears the Hash S@#t Hat, pink underwear would you believe? As for Needle
Dick, fancy forgetting the hat two weeks in a row. Think he should start
drinking tomato juice as I think his memory span has got to that of a
goldfish. Quote from Guinness Book of Records “a goldfish has a memory
span of 3 seconds” unquote.
Great anniversaries, can you imagine Hoser 200 runs; took
him a long time though. And congratulations to Festering Streaker 100, Spunk
Bubble 100, Rambo WW2 50th.
Bad R.A. Sir Airhead took the circle over and iced the
hares Boy George and C face for very little reason apart from all the people
getting lost, but their excuse “if you lose paper and carry on, serves you
right”. Then the Belgians all got iced because of their closeness to
Russia and it was actually their fault the submarine sank. Then a brilliant
song emailed to H3 from Australia by our erstwhile member Zippo, and
presented magnificently by that Chicken Fellow about the submarine to the
tune of the Yellow Submarine.
Nice to see the visitors from the UK and hope the kids
enjoyed the action at TQ 1. I wonder if they go to one of these joints at
the Quorn Hash. Good to see the new virgins, hope to see them again.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the vitamin, protein enriched hot dogs at TQ1. What
a meal, great for all those people on a diet. The team just descended on
them like a swarm of locusts. Just goes really well with that Heineken.
Great music as usual and the bevy of pretty girls. Looking forward to the
veterans run next week. Remember, everyone can come. Lets keep the good
times rolling.

Lewiinski’s breaks into the lead
Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowing League
No team managed a clean sweep at the PSC Friday Bowling
League last week and the only change in the standings was the Snowman team
moving up from 4th to 3rd and leaping over TQ 1 Bob. Lewiinski’s managed
to hold a slim lead over Cafe Ole but the league is getting tighter.
Best game of the day was rolled by Udom (House of the
Golden Coin) who had a great 197 scratch, 231 with handicap. Captain Jeed
(Snowman) bowled the best series of the day of 540, with two 191 games and
a 158 game.

Peugeot and Natavud dominate Bira weekend
Thailand Touring Car Champion, Natavud capped a great
weekend at the Bira Race Circuit by taking two pole positions and
convincingly winning the 10th round of the Asian Touring Car Championship,
as well as the 4th round of the Thailand Touring Car Championship.
The international Asian championship saw 18 teams from
Asia at Bira for the event. Arriving in Thailand after 8 rounds, the
leader of the title chase was Henry Lee Jnr from Hong Kong in the WK
Longman Racing Peugeot 306, with countryman Charles Kwan in the EKS
Motorsports BMW 2 points adrift.
Natavud
on the grid
Local driver, Natavud was given a guest seat in the
second Peugeot and showed his mettle by taking pole position from Lee’s
Peugeot for the next day for both rounds 9 and 10.
In round 9, Natavud had problems, leaving Lee to get
the win from a surprised Lam Wai-Hung from Hong Kong in the Honda Integra
and countryman Albert Au in a similar car, after both EKS BMW’s of Kwan
and Chan retired as well.
However, in round 10 Natavud showed why he is
Thailand’s champion by racing away to be never headed in the 20 lap
race. Henry Lee Jnr was second, but unable to make any ground on the
flying Thai, who slowed as he crossed the line to allow Lee to take a
“Team” formation finish. Charles Kwan came third, but at no time was a
threat. EKS Team owner Eddie Koay admitted that they were still having
trouble sorting the BMW’s for the new specifications of the Asian
Touring Car Championship formula. This leaves Henry Lee Jnr well in front
of Charles Kwan, but there are still six rounds to go.
Natavud backed up his win with another top spot on the
podium in the Thailand Touring Cars with the works team Toyota Corolla
Altis. Despite slipping back to 7th after the first lap he cleanly brought
the Corolla through to take the lead a few laps from home and was never
headed after that. 2nd was Hattai and 3rd Ekprawat in Honda Civics, while
early leader Apathorn in the Civic fell back with problems and Natavud’s
team mate Pete had to pit to change the deflating left rear tyre on his
Corolla.
The next rounds of the Asian Championship will be held
in China at the Zuhai Circuit on October 7th and 8th, while the next round
of the Thailand Touring Car Championship will be at the local Bira Circuit
on the 15th of October.

A message from PSC Golf Chairman Dennis
Willett
My first order of business is to thank Michael Franklin
for the wonderful job he did for the past three years as the chairman, and
Jim Montgomery who served as acting chairman for the past two months. Golf
in Pattaya has grown and prospered under this guidance.
For our residents and visitors, it will be our job as
the golf committee to continue this growth and try to find new ideas to
continue making golf in the Pattaya area the best in the world. Organizing
new venues for everyone to play out of, organizing new major tournaments,
updating the web site to get more information on golf in Pattaya to
everyone are just a few of the things we are discussing. Our web site
address is <www.pattayasports.org> Watch for the improvements and
more information on the local courses. You can also get information on how
to join the Pattaya Sports Club on the web site.
We will continue to use both the USGA and Congu
handicap systems. But, there will be only one handicap for each member so
let us know which system you prefer.
Remember, beginning November 1, most of the local golf
courses are making soft spikes mandatory. I have been assured that the
local clubs will have facilities available to change your steel spikes to
soft spikes. And, note that golf carts are compulsory on weekends at Laem
Chabang International Country Club.
The Pattaya Sports Club has purchased land just off of
the Third Road to build a new administration office. Some people have
asked me if that will become the only venue for golf once it is completed.
The answer is absolutely no; we want to continue supporting the places to
meet and depart for golf as well as develop new venues so members and
visitors will have several choices of which group they wish to play with
on any given day. We will continue to publish and post the schedules
around town as well as continue publishing the schedule in the Pattaya
Mail. Everyone should get a copy of the Pattaya Mail and check the
schedule for venues and formats.
I am planning a meeting where all golfers that have any
questions for the golf committee, or any ideas they would like to discuss,
can get together for an open air discussion with the idea of improving
golf in the Pattaya area. When this is arranged, everyone will be given
plenty of notice so they can plan to attend. If you would like to e-mail
any ideas at this time, please use our e-mail address [email protected]
Competition golf is available almost every day of the
month at one of the PSC golf venues listed in the Pattaya Mail. Check the
Pattaya Mail for schedules, times and transportation. Please remember to
play by the rules of golf and to follow any local rules that are printed
on the scorecards. For those of you on the USGA handicap system, turn in
all cards that qualify for a round of golf; for those on the Congu system,
please give your card to the organizer of the events you play in.
Golf in the Pattaya area is considered by many to be
the best in the world. We have 19 courses to choose from; several were
designed by some of the biggest names in golf. Join us in strolling down
the first fairway and you will soon join us in saying “just another day
in paradise”.
England beat the Rest Of The World
Pattaya Golf Society with The Bunker
On Friday 26th August, competitive golf started from
the Bunker with a match play championship pitting England v The Rest Of
The World. The match was held at Phoenix Country Club in fine weather.
England won the tournament by 5 games to 3 with 1 halved.
Wilf Latham captained the England team and Gordon
McKnight from Canada captained The Rest Of The World. After the match
Gordon presented Wilf with the trophy, which will in future be known as
The Cider Cup.
The results were as follows: Len Jones (Wales) beat
John Preddy (Eng), Viv Lill (Philippines) beat Ian Phillips (Eng), Hannu
(Swe) beat Peter Allcorn (Eng), Bruce Lawrence (USA) halved with Paul
Butler (Eng), Chris John (Eng) beat Bill Jones (Wales), Wilf Latham (Eng)
beat George Meigh (Wales), Roy Mitchell (Eng) beat Norman Brooks (Wales),
Ken Lill (Eng) beat Jon Wood (Sco) and Tony Callen (Eng) beat Gordon
McKnight (Can).
Players lose their way
On Tuesday 29th August, 25 golfers left The Bunker to
play a Stableford competition at Century Golf Course in Rayong.
Unfortunately, only 18 arrived at the course. 3 went to Eastern Star and 4
ended up at Pattaya Country Club. So a reduced field was split into two
groups to play.
In division one, Mike Larsen topped the board with 38
points, followed by Norman Brooks with 37 points and Peter Mackay in third
with 36 points.
In division two, the winner was Ian Phillips with a
fine 39 points on this undulating course. In second place came John Preddy
with 35 points and third Jon Wood with 33 points. Nearest the pins this
week were Hannu, George Meigh, Wilf Latham and Bruce Lawrence.
Mr Loy does it again
For the second month running Roy Mitchell has won The
Bunker Bonus, thus keeping up his run of fine form. Can he make it a hat
trick?
Golf at Asia
The Bunker now plays competitive golf on Tuesdays and
Fridays for people with handicaps up to 36. Also, there is a par 3
competition at the Asia Golf Course every Thursday leaving The Bunker at 2
p.m. So if you want to practice your short game all are welcome.
