Dulwich Internaitonal
College helps Clean Up The World
“After we had finished cleaning up the world we had
some snacks and drinks.”
Volunteers from all over the world, including Pattaya
and Phuket, joined together on Saturday 23rd September to help clean up
their local environments. From the initial idea of Australian sailor Ian
Kiernan, following his solo voyage around the world in 1986/87, Clean Up
The World has now grown to involve citizens from over 120 countries.
Grace, Siri Linn, Christopher and Laura, the Year 6
representatives on the Dulwich International College Student Council, and
Alessandro, Natalie, Tri and Nattapong, the Year 5 representatives,
summarised their day for the Pattaya Mail:
“Clean Up The World started at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday
23rd September on Nai Harn Beach. When we first arrived it was raining;
but it soon stopped and the sun came out. Everyone helped us clean up the
world: parents, teachers and the people working at Le Royal Meridien
Phuket Yacht Club. There were about 200 people helping so we finished very
quickly.

“We were given gloves and plastic bags and then we
all set off in different directions. We found lots of rubbish like bags,
oil, bottles, plastic bags, metal objects, cans, glass, clothes and even
some shoes! Altogether we filled about 35 huge rubbish bags.
“After we had finished cleaning up the world, the
Meridien gave everybody some snacks and soft drinks. We were very tired
but felt so good helping our environment and thought that we had done a
really good job. It was great to know that we were joining everyone else
in all the other countries working on the same day.”
Other groups from Dulwich International College either
put their scuba training to the test and did an undersea cleanup or else
headed to the Gibbon Sanctuary to clear up the rubbish so thoughtlessly
strewn around the National Park.
Boarders at Dulwich contribute to keeping the
environment clean throughout the year. Each of the six boarding houses
(Kamala, Kata, Nai Harn, Rawai, Surin and Yon) takes responsibility for
the beach it is named after and makes regular forays to keep the rubbish
and general pollution at bay.
We all had a lot of fun clearing up but we did ask
ourselves why it is so necessary to have a Clean Up The World Day?
Wouldn’t it be a lot easier if we all put our rubbish in the bin the
first time round? If we all were to do that our beaches, parks, cities and
villages would all look much better throughout the year. But there will
always be lazy, unthinking people so…
Come and join us next year for Clean Up The World!
Pokemon madness hits the
Thai Garden
The Thai Garden Resort’s new kids club was a great
success with the first of its weekly Pokemon World brunch parties on Sunday,
October 8. Everyone enjoyed the day, which was complete with a magic show,
clowns balloons, colouring in competitions and a battle royal to see who
would be this week’s Pokemon Master.
Miss
Jacqueline - Pokemon Master of the Week - accepts her certificate from the
Thai Garden’s Rene Pisters.
Each week, the fun and games include Pokemon twister, a
Pokemon quiz with giveaways, card trading, and a super Pikachu treasure.
The final game was a battle of wits in a true or false
quiz, with the Title of Pokemon Master of the Week going to Jacqueline for
outsmarting all comers.
So kids, bring your mum and dad for a day out of fun and
games and maybe you could be the next Pokemon Master of the Week. The fun
happens every Sunday from noon till 3:00 p.m. For more information, contact
Mr. Onno at 370614, ext. 6666.
ISR’s Student Guild
in Action!
High on the list of priorities for ISR’s Student
Guild is helping needy people in the community. As well as an ongoing
programme of support for Bansubcharoen School near Korat, this year the
Guild plans to focus on groups ‘closer to home’ in the Eastern
Seaboard region.
Recently students initiated a far-reaching scheme which
involved writing to more than 150 companies in Thailand to ask for support
for the Student Guild projects. The response has been tremendous, and
students had to organise a special trip to Bangkok to collect donations
from many generous companies.
During
their trip to Bangkok, members of the ISR Student Guild met with Khun
Palit Phadungchai and Khun Nopporn Pattarajariyanon from Asia Books and
collected magazines that the company had generously donated for their
community service projects.
The students returned to ISR in a school bus loaded up
with a fantastic range of items, including hundreds of pencils and
notebooks from Pentel (Thailand) Co., Ltd. There were also dozens of
magazines from Asia Books, many tins of biscuits from Saha Pattanapibul
Co., and books from Reader’s Digest (Thailand) Co., Ltd. The British
Embassy donated nearly 5,000 baht and the Imperial Tara Hotel donated
clothes and shoes.
Natthapoj, President of the Student Guild, was
delighted with the result of the campaign. “We very much appreciate the
support of all these companies and it is great to know that they are
interested in our community work. Many more companies are donating items
and we have to organise another trip to Bangkok to collect them!” he
said. “The best part of the project will be distributing all these items
to people and groups who are in need. We will be visiting our adopted
school at Bansubcharoen soon and I know that the children and teachers
there will be able to make good use of everything we give.”
ISR helps to ‘Clean
Up the World’ on Land and Sea!
More than one hundred ISR students and staff
participated in the ‘Clean Up the World’ campaign recently, working
both on land and sea.
ISR
divers who helped clean up were (from l to r) Elizabeth, Peter, Pippa,
Trish, Rosemary, Ceri, Lyn, Dave and Paul.
In a clean-up spearheaded by ISR’s Environmental
Club, students, staff and a team from the Banglamung Municipality got down
to work on Saturday afternoon in some local sois. Armed with brooms,
dustpans, rubbish bags, gloves and leaflets the group moved through the
Rong Poh market area, spreading the word about ‘Clean Up the World’
and leaving the area spotless.
Ready
for the clean up: Officers from Banglamung Municipality, together with
students and staff from ISR.
Banglamung Mayor Pramote Bua Tone gave the project his
enthusiastic support, and in his welcome speech, thanked ISR students for
providing the spark to ignite the conscience and awareness of local people
with respect to environmental issues.

Headmaster of ISR, Mr Simon Leslie and the Mayor of Banglamung, Pramote

And at sea... A group of keen divers from ISR,
including staff and students, took part in the Pattaya Reef Clean Up which
was held as part of ‘Clean Up the World’. They joined other divers
aboard MV Patricia and spent the morning at Koh Sak collecting rubbish
from the seabed. Items found included barbeque grills, bottles, pulley
wheels and even a mobile phone!
Clean Up the World involves more than 40 million people
in over 120 countries and everyone involved was pleased to give their
support and help make a difference to our local environment.
Rainbowland
Children’s Club cleans up Naam Rin Beach
A team of over sixty adults and children from the
Rainbowland Children’s Club, run by Christ Church Ban Chang, took part
in this year’s ‘Clean Up the World’ campaign on Saturday 23rd
September. The site chosen for this activity was the newly developed Naam
Rin Beach between Phayoon and Maptaput.
The
Rainbowland Children’s Club joined the “Clean Up the World campaign by
cleaning up Naam Rin Beach.
Mr. Suchin, the local government official, opened the
proceedings and his Environmental Development Office supplied both the
manpower and a truck to takeaway the bags of beach rubbish collected.
The children enthusiastically took part, giving the
organisers hope that this will be the beginning of a new awareness of how
we can all play a part in taking care of our world.
