Mike Larsen wins Shenanigans
Inaugural Irish Open
Mike Larsen became the first Shenanigans Irish Open
Champion on Friday, October 6 at Eastern Star after carding 42 points off
his 16 handicap. Mike’s name goes on the perpetual Championship Trophy
with an engraved Champion’s Mug close by in Shenanigans for him to use,
no doubt, on frequent visits to the pub.
First
ever Shenanigans Irish Open Champion Mike Larsen.
130 golfers teed off in the newly opened Shenanigans
Irish Pub’s inaugural Irish Open tournament. And what a day that was for
this first Shenanigans ‘major’ tournament at ‘Home Course’,
Eastern Star, with golfers being warmly greeted on arrival by Kim
Fletcher, Tom Cole and the ever-smiling ladies staffing the pro-shop.
Taking the more official line at registration was
Dennis Willett verifying handicaps and sorting out a few ‘no-shows’,
clearly deterred by the overnight weather. Shenanigans staff were on hand
too, giving out the Shenanigans tournament shirt, rated by ebullient
Shenanigans landlord, Kim Fletcher, as ‘the best yet’!
The day began with fine weather on this challenging
Robert Trent Jones Jr. course, presented to its usual high standard. The
weather was not to last, however, as, with very little warning, the black
clouds arrived early afternoon with torrential rain, thunder and
fortunately just a little lightening which, after the overnight rain, made
the course unplayable for a while. Understandable though, and quite normal
for an Irish tournament, especially one with a Shenanigans title!
The inconvenience was eased somewhat by the free water,
beer and pasties handed out on the course by Shenanigans staff, seemingly
always to hand when needed.
There were lots of technical prizes and many trophies
and prizes for performance in this Singles Stableford competition. Scores
were not as high as one would expect due to the playing conditions, but
nevertheless respectable with all the Division winners returning scores
better than net par and between 37 and 39 Stableford points.
Mam Trayling won the Ladies Division with 39 points,
apparently due to not having been coached by husband Ed for almost a week.
Neville Steward won Division II with 38 points on a
four-way count-back, with Harry Riley returning the Low Gross for Division
II of 90.
Clive Bruce won Division I with 39 points on a
three-way count-back, and Steve Mascari took the Low Gross prize with a 76
off the stick. All closely fought, and with so many count-backs, some
extra work for the regular scoring team of Stephen Beard and Harry Riley.
Special awards included a ‘Group Prize’, sponsored
by the Classroom for the Best Three Aggregate Points group score, won by
Clive Bruce’s group which included Dave Meadows, Ray Ryan and Kaew
Somkid. They received a bottle of champagne, 20% annual Discount Vouchers
for the Classroom and four mystery prizes!
The Best Dressed Golfer award amazingly went to Jack
Levy; the Worst Dressed Golfer boringly went again to Mark Gorda. Chris
John had the lowest points score of the day, but did manage double
figures. Herbie Ishinaga was nearest the 45 pint Carlsberg keg and
promised to drink it in one hit - no surprise there! Jeff Paladeau had the
shortest drive on Hole 13, ‘under-driving’ Shenanigans’ managing
director, Trevor Allen, with a consummate drive of just two inches and
winning him a fine Cuban cigar for his effort.
Shenanigans Irish Open Champion 2000, Mike Larsen, when
asked how he did it said, “I sat it out through the storm and then just
kept going.” Clearly a ‘thinking man’ on a thinking mans’ course.
It was a Shenanigans friendly day out and a very
friendly evening later back at Shenanigans. The free Carvery was well up
to its usual standard and regarded as the top roast in town by the
regulars.
The prize giving ceremony, emceed by Shenanigans Very
Friendly Golf Society chairman and tournament director Mike Franklin, took
place on schedule with Kim presenting the prizes, followed by a lucky draw
which included Eastern Star green fees, dinner for two vouchers for the
Green Bottle Pub from the Diana Group, and the main prize of an
all-inclusive weekend at Eastern Star Resort won by John Ginnane.
All up, a good inaugural Irish Open and just what you
would expect from a pub that calls itself Shenanigans!

ISR girls win at football
Inter-school football recommenced recently with a
friendly ‘warm-up’ between the senior girls teams and under 13 boys
teams from the International School of the Regents and Garden
International School.
The
ISR senior girls football team
ISR won both games, but more important was the good
sportsmanship shown by all sides. The ISR girls in particular retained all
the confidence and team work which led to their success in team sports at
the FOBISSEA games in Phuket earlier this year.
Phuket King's Cup Regatta: Volvo backs a
winner
by Peter Cummins
The recent announcement that the Phuket King’s Cup
Regatta was to be granted the “Event of the Year” Award by the Thailand
Incentive and Convention Association came as good news to the large number
of people involved. It must have been particularly satisfying for Volvo
which, only recently, agreed to become the Regatta’s principal sponsor, in
line with the company’s policy of promoting many sports, especially yacht
racing.

charge of Tourism, presents the Award to William J. Gasson. Photo Peter
Cummins
At a ceremony held at the opening of the “Convention
Promotion Seminar and Convex” at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort, William J.
Gasson accepted the award on behalf of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta
organizing committee. It represents the first time in the Association’s
history that a regatta has been so honoured.
Bill Gasson was a most appropriate choice to represent
the Regatta committee, for he has been a founding member and has played an
active role in the highly complex Regatta management for its 13 editions. He
was president of the organizing committee for two years in the early 1990s.
Furthermore, he has been the Regatta racing class
champion on four occasions. Right now, he is preparing his Humphrey’s 51
sloop, “Big Buzzard” to sail to Malaysia to take part in the first of
South East Asia’s three-regatta circuit, the Raja Muda, followed by the
Singapore Straits Regatta and finally the Fourteenth Phuket King’s Cup
Regatta. This last will be sailed from the third to the ninth of December
during the week of H.M. the King’s seventy-third birthday on the fifth of
December.
The best-placed yacht in the tri-partite series will
carry off the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup and Bill has set his sights to do just
that, having finished second in his last attempt.
Upon accepting the award, Bill pointed out that it was
the accumulated effort of successive committees over the years which
contributed to this new achievement.
And now the Regatta, already acknowledged as one of the
world’s best blue-water classics, sets yet another benchmark, with the
Award standing alongside the handsome permanent trophy which His Majesty the
King graciously bestows each year.
Pattaya Bush Hash House Harriers Run No.1
Saturday 14th October 2000
For Hashers and Soon-To-Be-Hashers who would like some
hashing/running challenge: there will be a new style monthly run starting
Saturday 14th October 2000 - The Pattaya Bush Hash House Harriers. Hash
House Harriers are internationally known for their fun run or paper chase
with the emphasis on socialising after a run.
The new Hash will meet at Shenanigans from 1:00 p.m. on
Sat. the 14th and will depart at 2:00 p.m. Transport and A-site maps will be
available from Shenanigans. The actual run starts at approx. 3:30 p.m. and
will consist of a long and short trail. The duration of the long run will be
1-1/2 to 2 hrs but the choice of trail will be entirely up to the
individual. We will retain the normal ‘fun’ element of the traditional
HHH so it will not be a race.
After the run you can cool down with a dip in the
swimming pool, take a shower, or simply drink your first beer of the day
while enjoying the delicious food sponsored by Shenanigans The Irish Pub
(formerly Delaney’s). A traditional ‘Inaugural Run’ Pattaya Bush Hash
House Harriers T-shirt will be available.

House of the Golden Coin tied for first
Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League
Captain Mio and her House of the Golden Coin team moved
into a tie for first place with Lewiinski’s after winning four points
for the second week in a row. Mio, with Udom and Suphan, shut out Caf้
Ole, even though they had to give Caf้ Ole 43 pins per game on
handicap.
For the second week running Lewiinski’s managed two
of four points and have now seen their big lead in the league fade away.
Three Sisters again won three points, with La the
Bowling Chairperson starting to regain her form. La bowled a 254 (with
handicap) and a 639 series (with handicap).
Only one bowler managed a 200 game, Captain Kran of the
Caf้ Kronborg team whilst helping her team win 3 points.
Fritz (VFW Post 9876) bowled the best series of the day
knocking down 526 pins.

Schumi gives Ferrari the Crown
The Japanese Grand Prix saw Michael Schumacher bring the
World Drivers Championship back to Ferrari after a gap of 21 years. This had
been the German’s ambition for the past four years, and it was an
emotional Schumacher with the entire Ferrari team who celebrated the
victory. Now 12 points clear of Mika Hakkinen, Schumacher cannot be beaten
with the Malaysian race still to go.
The race itself was somewhat processional, but all eyes
were on the leading pair of Hakkinen (Mclaren Mercedes) and Schumacher. The
two drivers had blasted away from the rest at the start, with Hakkinen
getting the best of the German, despite one of Schumacher’s famous start
line swerves! After two laps, there were really only two cars in the race,
as the protagonists just drew away from the rest of the field.
The crucial time came at the second pit stop, when the
superior tactics of Ferrari’s Ross Brawn convincingly beat the collective
brains from the McLaren team under the direction of Ron Dennis. As soon as
Hakkinen pitted on lap 37, Brawn told Schumacher to really get the hammer
down and kept his driver out there for another three laps.
A series of super-quick laps saw Schumacher pull back the
deficit to Hakkinen, and with a lightning pit stop by Jean Todt’s Ferrari
crew, the red Ferrari came out of the pits in front of the silver McLaren.
The radio conversation to Schumacher, as he agonisingly slowly made his way
down pit lane, was prophetic, with Ross Brawn looking back for the oncoming
Hakkinen, saying to Schumacher, “It’s looking good, it’s looking good
- it’s looking bloody good!” as they could see that they had managed to
get the advantage over the Finn, and Schumacher rejoined safely, now in
front of the McLaren of Hakkinen.
From then on the race, and the title, was all
Schumacher’s. Slightly damp conditions also favoured the German driver and
he pulled his advantage out to over 6 seconds, only to slow down towards the
end to ensure finishing in one piece, following some strong recommendations
from his crew!
Third, and over 68 seconds behind, was Coulthard, with
Barichello another 10 seconds adrift. 5th was Button and the last
championship point went to Villeneuve in the BAR.
It was a well deserved win for Ferrari after 21 years,
and during this season Schumacher has shown that he is the best driver in
the world, in all conditions. The best driver now has the Championship Cup
for his mantle-piece!
The final round is in Malaysia on the 22nd of this month,
and with Ferrari 13 points ahead in the Constructor’s Championship, and 20
points up for grabs, it will be interesting to see if Ferrari can take the
double!
Pleasure Dome holds tenuous lead in
Wednesday darts
After 140 games through 14 weeks of the Pattaya Sports
Club sponsored Wednesday Premier Darts League, Pleasure Dome sits atop the
table, but just 2 wins ahead of second place Jack’s Bar. Country House
is a close third, just 6 games back.
In week 14, Pleasure Dome solidified their position
with a 6-4 win over Country House. Jack’s Bar gained a little ground,
however, with a 7-3 win over Mango.
In other week 14 action, Tippy’s ran off a 10-0 sweep
of Lancaster Rose, Wandee Bar defeated Mick’s Place 7-3, and Thistle
beat Lazi Pig in a 9-1 route. Ding Dong had a bye.
Chris from Mick’s Place holds the league’s highest
out to date, 160. Alex from Pleasure Dome is leading the league in most
outs with 64. Alex also holds the league lead in most individual tons with

Lewiinski’s-Orchid wins inaugural Ryder
Cup match against E.C.G.M.A.
The inaugural match between the E.C.G.M.A. (East Coast
Golf Managers’ Association) and Lewiinski’s-Orchid Golf Club took
place on Wednesday, October 4 at Laem Chabang Golf Club. The 27-hole
competition consisted of nine holes of Greensomes on A, a second nine
holes of four-balls on B and a final nine holes of singles on C.
Captain
Steve Mascari proudly displays the trophy amongst the members of both
teams.
With the golf managers’ handicaps ranging from 0-13,
Lewiinski’s-Orchid knew they had a difficult task ahead.
Surprisingly, after the early morning Greensomes, the
golf managers trailed by 1 1/2 to 4 1/2, the match being played under the
Ryder Cup format. The proceedings were brilliantly supervised by Khun
Marrisa, who is one of Thailand’s few lady professional golfers and the
marketing manager of Laem Chabang. Marrisa announced each group in order
of play on the tee and kept everybody on the course informed as to how the
match was progressing.
The fourballs produced some great matches, and with the
exception of the luckless Steve Beard and Clive Bruce match going to the
wire, the outcome going into lunch was a healthy four point lead for
Lewiinski’s-Orchid. However, the feeling was that the singles were going
to be a different matter.
With three groups playing in two balls left on the
course, the score stood at 11 1/2 to 9 1/2 in Lewiinski’s-Orchid’s
favour. Jim Brackett’s match against Pui from Laem Chabang finished on
the 6th with Jim going down 4 & 3. This left Stan Fry or Steve
Mascari, playing in the final two singles, to win the one point required
for victory.
Stan got his pants taken down on the par three eighth
by Mike, the manager of NP Resort, after he sunk a magnificent 20 foot
birdie putt. This left the two captains, Steve and Nirun (Green Valley) to
fight out the match going up the ninth. Nirun’s second shot found the
greenside bunker, which left Steve the task of two-putting for victory.
Steve stroked his putt into the heart of the hole and the win was secured
by one point.
A reception and presentation with a magnificent buffet
was held at Lewiinski’s Hotel in the evening. Special thanks went to
Marrisa, who was presented with a bottle of Moet Chandon, which she
gracefully received.
Shot of the day went to Nirun, whose second shot to
Laem Chabang’s most difficult hole, the 6th on B course, finished just
four inches from the cup. Worst shot of the day went to Steve Beard, whose
tee shot on the 1st on C barely made the ladies tee on the down slope.
However, he recovered brilliantly to halve the hole and go on to secure
his first point of the day with a magnificent victory.
Niran presented the trophy to Steve Mascari who
graciously accepted on behalf of Lewiinski’s-Orchid Golf Club. Michael
Mesommont, manager of Natural Park Golf Resort, in an after-dinner
presentation speech, went on to thank Lewiinski’s-Orchid G.C. for the
hospitality extended and expressed the E.C.G.M.A.’s appreciation for a
wonderful day which, in his words, was long overdue, and made the point to
each and every one present that it would be the first of many such events
to follow in the future.
George Meigh and John Preddy win better
ball
Pattaya Cafe Society from The Bunker
On Friday September 30th 16 golfers from The Bunker
went to the lovely Natural Park Resort Golf Club to play a two man better
ball competition. The draw paired two in-form golfers together, George
Meigh who had just won the Bunker Bonus for September and John Preddy who
was victorious last week. Between them they scored a better ball total of
60, easily winning the competition. Runners up were Peter Renggli and
Gordon McKnight, 3 shots behind with 63.
George continues good form
On Tuesday October 3rd 15 golfers from The Bunker went
to Green Valley Golf Course for a medal and Stableford competition. The
low handicap players played medal and the high handicap players played
Stableford.
In the medal competition, George Meigh continued his
fine form with a par 72, eleven shots clear of runner up Johani Pyrakkanis
who returned 83, one shot in front of Mike Barlow with 84.
In the Stableford competition, Len Jones, who has also
shown fine form in September, won with a Stableford score of 34 points.
Joint runners up were Rob Hynes and old Tom Waldron, both with a score of
33 points. Nearest the pins were George Meigh, Peter Renggli and old Tom
Waldron.
The par three tournament at the Asia golf course was
won by Bruce Lawrence this week.
A tired Brian O’Gorman wins at Siam
Golfers from the Three Sisters
Golfers from the Three Sisters met for fun golf at Siam
on Monday, October 3. As there were no carts available for the day, all
participants were forced to walk the course. Brian O’Gorman and Herb
Ishinaga were dying by the time they made the turn at the ninth. Brian
with part of his lungs missing and Herb with all the excess weight
dripping begged for carts but it fell on deaf ears. The course became a
grind.
Brian O’Gorman, tired as he was, managed to shoot a
respectable 39 points. Although it looked like he was about to fall down
on every swing, Brian was getting to the greens, then he putted like a
demon to win the bragging rights for the day. Bob Davis won second on
count back with 32 points.
By the end of the day, Siam took its toll on the
golfers. It was noted that some of Jerry Lien’s divots were going
further than his ball. Although Paul Kraft was chipping in from the
fringe, once he was on the green it looked like he needed a new putter. By
the 18th, Don Antonio, who is over eighty years old, was helping Brian
O’Gorman getting up the hill. Kenny Mau was seen dripping sweat as all
the beer he has been drinking tried to find a way out.
After the match Bob Davis and Doug Powell poured beers
down replacing lost fluids and told tall stories about how well they
played. (Only joking!) Anyway, fun was has by all as Monday golf from the
Three Sisters continues.
On Thursday, September 28, the golfers from the Three
Sisters met at Green Valley. Although he drove from Bangkok to join the
group, George Davis won the bragging rights by shooting 34 Stableford
points. The course was a little soggy making it difficult to score.
Although George swings from the wrong side of the ball, like Phil
Mickelson, he got the job done - congratulations.
Coming in second with 33 points was Gerry Carpenter. As
usual, Gerry was down the straight and narrow without too many blunders.
The same could not be said for Paul Kraft and Dene Mundy as both of them
lost 6 balls each. Paul lost 3 balls on the first three holes, possibly
setting a record of losing a new sleeve of balls. Although Dene also lost
6 balls, he distributed them more evenly over the course. I believe there
was some muttering about being drunk the night before due to bowling and
lack of a good night’s sleep. I could have been hearing wrong.
Doug Powell and Kenny Mau also did not fare well at
Green Valley. Although both have won previously, it seems that it just
wasn’t their day. As always, fun was had by all and after a few tips at
the clubhouse the golfers dispersed to wait for their next opportunity to
claim the bragging rights.
Swanson and Ebrahim win the week
Golf from Cafe Kronborg
Monday, October 2 - Green Valley (Stableford)
The Kronborg crew headed off to the lush Green Valley
course on Monday, October 2 for a Stableford competition. John Swanson
outplayed the field, taking 1st place with 39 points. Philipe Berra
finished second with 36.
Thursday October 5 - Bangpra (Stableford)
On Thursday October 5, a “lucky” thirteen players
took part in a Stableford match at the tough Bangpra course. Low
Stableford scores were the order of the day, but Ebrahim managed a
creditable 39 points to take the honors. Finland’s Tomi Tikkonen was
second with 37, followed by Rick Evans (3rd) with 34.
Next week’s venues are: Monday October 16 at Phoenix
Country Club and Thursday the 19th at Khao Kheow Country Club.
Shenanigans inaugural Better Ball
tees-off at Eastern Star
In fine weather, and on a course lush from overnight
rain, twenty-eight players enjoyed the luxury of a bonus five ‘Shenanigans’
(otherwise known as Mulligans) for the round.
The Traylings were definitely not trailing on this
occasion, returning the winning score of forty-seven (Shenanigan
aided) Stableford points. The net 63 recorded by Mam Trayling off her 29
handicap unfortunately does not count for handicap review due to the ‘Shenanigans’
allowed on the day, and the expert tuition, coaching and encouragement
administered by jovial husband Ed, he claims! However, it was a fine
performance whatever the circumstances.
Runners-up were newcomers to the very friendly
Shenanigans Society, Andy Wellington and John (G’Day) Murdoch, returning
an excellent 46 points off their respective 10 and 12 handicaps.
Disappointed were Eddie Blackwell and fast improving
Urai Khongnok, also returning 46 points but losing on count-back.
Another newcomer, that very nice Ebrahim, claimed two
near pins on holes #4 and #8, getting him off to a fine start. The others
were Andy Wellington on #12 and the well coached Mam Trayling on #15. Dene
Mundy amazingly sank the longest first putt on hole #9, and birthday boy
Ellis Varnado out-putted Banjob on #18. ‘Shappy Birthday’ to him!
The Eastern Star clubhouse staff were in their usual
very friendly and efficient mood. Tom Cole was never very far away, and it
all added up to another very friendly day out and a warm up for the
Shenanigans Irish Open on October 6th.
The next outing is on the 17th of
October for a Two Man Scramble. Hope to see you then and, if you want to
join Shenanigans Very Friendly Golf Society just call in to Shenanigans,
be very friendly, and ask Kim for an application form.

scored 40 Stableford points. He will also be taking back the knowledge
that he squeezed every bit of fun out of his stay, whether it was wine,
women, song, the hash, or golf. For this Aussie, “give it a rest”
means going back to work.
Magnus Johansson is back from Sweden and wasted no time
climbing on the leader board. His 39 points was good for second place,
with Klaus Schackt coming in third with 33 points.

Harry Riley had six pars and a birdie en route to a net
69 and first place in the TAGGS Stroke Play competition on Wednesday at
Eastern Star. Harry is hot, this being his second singles win in two
weeks. But before that, he hadn’t won since April 2, which proves that
golf handicapping is a good example of The Peter Principle. We play
golf well enough to reach our level of incompetence and there we sit until
such time our handicaps rise to the point we can start playing to it
again. Good luck Harry.
A couple of twelve handicappers just missed playing to
their “level of incompetence”. Jeff McLaury shot a net 73 that was
good for second place, and John Taylor shot a net 74 for the third spot on
the podium.
