German Thai Chamber of Commerce (GTCC) feels investment slowing

At the Stammtisch (networking evening) held at the Amari Orchid Resort last week, two of the board members of the GTCC admitted that overseas investment from Germany has slowed this year; however, they did not believe that this could be taken as an indicator of adverse Thai government policies. Hans-Kurt Schaefer, the senior vice president of the German Commerzbank, felt that the general economic slow down in Europe was simply being reflected as a slow down in overseas investment.

The other board member, Stefan Buerkle, a well established business advisor with the GTCC, said that the “honeymoon” period following a change in government was not yet over, but he did not endorse some sections of the overseas media who were portraying the new Thaksin government as being “anti foreigners”. While the name of the party, Thai Rak Thai, may look overly nationalistic, the GTCC were confident that Thailand was still looking for overseas investment, especially from the larger ‘Blue chip’ companies.
