Pattaya United appoint new head coach

Ex-Chonburi coach Jadet takes over at struggling United

Ariyawat Nuamsawat
Jadet Meelap, who led the Chonburi Football Club to the Thai League championship 2 years ago, is taking over the rebuilding effort at Pattaya United after being appointed as the new head coach.

Jadet Meelap, the new head coach of Pattaya United FC talks to the media.

Nicknamed “The Master,” Jadet is hoping that an infusion of new blood will propel the team to at least a 7th place finish in the Thai Premier League this season. He takes over from Pansak Ketwattha, who recently resigned as head coach but stays on as general manager of the club.
Jadet, who was also a Thai Airways International assistant coach, said he didn’t feel any pressure from his new job: “I won’t have any problems,” he told reporters.
He is already looking at the rosters of other teams to help bolster the Pattaya squad and hopes to tap up his old club Chonburi FC for the signatures of Brazilians Anderson Machado. He also reportedly has his eyes on Willian Mendonca at Sriracha FC.
The new coach is all too aware that United need to find some more firepower up front and improve in the final third of the field after only scoring seven goals in the first half of the season, but he is confident that the improvement will come.
“I believe Pattaya United can contend,” he said. “I think the team is good enough to take the 7th spot this season.”
Pattaya United currently lie in 13th place in the Thai Premier League with 13 points from 15 games. The second half of the season gets underway in August.

Thailand Tigers upset strong Singapore to retain Pattaya Cup

Thailand Tiger and winner of the “Best on Ground” award, Damien Hoo (center), pounces on the ball to send the Tiger’s forward again.

David Paterson
The Thailand Tigers Australian Rules Football team scored their best win in many years to retain the Pattaya Cup on Saturday, June 27, played in front of an appreciative crowd at Horseshoe Point, Pattaya.
Visiting opponents, the Singapore Wombats, would have started “bookies favorites” going into the event after some impressive results in the past 12 months, including their runner-up effort in the 12-team Asia Championships late last year to a strong Dubai outfit.
However it was the local side that got off to the best possible start in the hot conditions, when Nathan Kincaid put the Tigers on the board early, goaling only two minutes into the first quarter. The Wombats were able to get a quick reply to level the scores, however the Thailand team, cheered on by the parochial crowd, then piled on 4 unanswered goals to take a 26 point lead into the 1st break.
Tigers midfielder Damien Hoo was ripping the Wombats apart with his dashing runs from defense and constant delivery into the forward line. He was being well supported by fellow midfielders Roger Sefton, Brett Stone, Shane Davy, and captain Jarrad Rexilius.
The 2nd quarter was a tougher affair as the Wombats rallied to get themselves back into the match. The Singapore team kicked 4 goals to the Tigers 3 for the quarter to marginally reduce the deficit to 22 points, however the half-time scores could have been a lot closer if not for the rebounding of Tigers debutant Tom Polk. Polk’s defensive work was a highlight of the game, and a great addition to the Tigers backline in the absence of the injured Kevin Hornblower.
The second half was a bruising encounter, with both teams losing players to injury as they fought to trade goals throughout. Every time the Wombats kicked a goal and seemed to be mounting a challenge, the Thai locals were able to counter and maintain their slender advantage. However the Wombats kept chipping away at the margin, and were able to get within 8 points at one stage.
In the last quarter, and in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, the Tigers were determined not to let this one slip away. Full-forward Michael Sammons, as he did in the ANZAC Day fixture last April, starred for the home team in front of goals, kicking his fourth goal for the day to again give the Tigers some breathing room.
Then, in fitting tributes to the two departing Tiger players in Brett Stone and Phil Ghasseb, full-back Ghasseb spoiled what looked to be a certain mark against his Singapore opponent to foil their last challenge. The ball then went up the other end of the ground where Stoney snapped cleverly around his body to seal the game for a great Tigers victory.
A terrific team performance earned the Tigers their win, however Damien Hoo was the standout player of the day and was awarded the “Best on Ground” medallion by Chairman of the Thailand Tigers Ex-Players Association and former AFL great for Fitzroy, Geoff Everett.
Final score: Thailand Tigers 11, 13, 79 defeated the Singapore Wombats 10, 8, 68. Goal scorers: Sammons 4, Kincaid 2, Hoo 2, Davy, Polk, Stone.

Bridge in Paradise: by Neil Robinson

Floored by a fiendish play

You are West and pick up this nice hand:

S: AQ7

H: 76

D: AK9652

C: 86

This is the bidding (South deals, EW vulnerable):

South     West (you)    North     East

1H           2D                  2H           3D

3H           4D                  4H           All pass

You lead a top diamond and see this dummy:

S: KJ542

H: 1085

D: -

C: Q10743

Declarer ruffs your top diamond in dummy, leads a low club to the ace of clubs in hand, and then leads the ten of spades from hand.  Before you look at the full deal below, decide which of your three spades (AQ7) you would play on this lead.

The full deal is:

                       S: KJ542

                       H: 1085

                       D: -

                       C: Q10743

S: AQ7                              S: 83

H: 76                                  H: J92

D: AK9652                       D: J1083

C: 86                                  C: KJ52

                       S: 1096

                       H: AKQ43

                       D: Q74

                       C: A9

Did you opt to play the ace?  Most players would.  Your best move after winning the ace is to lead a club, hoping that your partner can win and then give you a club ruff.  Success-partner wins with the jack, and leads back the king.  Declarer ruffs and you over ruff.  Unfortunately, it is now all over for the defence.  Declarer wins any return, pulls trumps, leads spades to finesse you and ends up winning four heart tricks, four spade tricks, the ace of clubs and a diamond ruff.  Ten tricks and contract made.
Maybe you chose to play a low spade, hoping that declarer would guess wrong and go up with the king, leaving your ace and queen as masters.  In this case, declarer’s ten would hold the trick.  Now declarer knows the spade situation, he switches tack and ruffs another diamond on board.  He then leads dummy’s last trump, pulls trumps, and finesses again in spades.  The defence can take a diamond, a spade and a club, but that is all.  Declarer takes the other ten tricks and makes the contract.
I played this hand as declarer.  If the queen of spades is onside, then the hand should make.  But what if the queen is offside and I guess wrong and lose two spade tricks, in addition to a club trick?  In that case, I cannot afford to lose a diamond.  That is why I chose to test one round of spades before pulling trumps.  As described above, against most defenders (ie. all those who play the ace or low on the second trick), this line of play makes the contract.  Unfortunately for me, West found the fiendish play of the queen.  On the face of it, this seems like a give up play, sacrificing the queen for nothing.  But look what happens next.
Since the ace of spades was out, I still could not afford to pull trumps, because I was wide open in diamonds.  Since I was on board, I could not ruff a diamond.  I knew I was at risk of a defensive cross-ruff, but I had no choice but to knock out the spade ace and hope for favourable distribution or a passive defence to save me.  Consequently, I led back to the nine of spades in hand, taken by the ace.  West then led a club to the jack.  The king of clubs came back, which I ruffed and she over-ruffed.  She then led a spade for East to ruff, and another club came back.  This time I ruffed high, and managed to scrape the rest of the tricks for one down.
I still don’t know quite what hit me - if I were holding West’s hand, I would probably still go up with the ace, and thus let declarer make the contract!  I would like to hear from readers about their favourite hands - please do contact me at: [email protected].

Mod does it again …just

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Barry Hooper
You may think that I have made a mistake and that the picture this week seems familiar. That is because it features the same two protagonists as last week. Yes, Mod and Fergus have been at it again.

Thursday’s winner at Phoenix, Mod Chaviraksa (left) with second placed Fergus Brennan.

I made a comment last week that I had not been able to report on the exploits of one of our regular lady players Mod Chaviraksa for some time and that she had managed to come to the top of the lists again at the Monday outing to Pattana. Well she was there again this week. Just! By that I mean after a count back thirty-seven at Phoenix on Thursday. The player she tipped down was no other than the boss himself Fergus Brennan who could only manage sixteen on the back nine against Mod’s twenty.
But the high scores this week have to go to John Franklin and Ito Akiitoshi on Tuesday at Bangpra. Ito must have thought that a forty-pointer was enough for a win, but not so as after a count back it was John at the top. The other player that suffered this week was Alan Evans who got pushed to third on two consecutive outings, Tuesday and Thursday.
Tuesday, June 30, Bangpra - Stableford
1st John Franklin (14) 40pts
2nd Ito Akitoshi (9) 40pts
3rd Alan Evans (24) 37pts
4th John Hefferman (11) 36pts
5th George Bishop (14) 36pts
Bangpra on Tuesday wasthe last outing by the TRGG in June. There was some high scoring trip on this with two forty-pointers from John Franklin and Ito Akitoshi at the top of the list. Both players must have thought that they could win but it was John who edged it on count back. Alan Evans was pushed to third at thirty-seven and John Hefferman and George Bishop had a count back tussle for forth spot, both at thirty six, with John just edging it
John also managed two 2’s, one at the eighth and another at the twelfth to round off what for him was a good day.
Thursday, July 2, Phoenix (Mountain & Ocean) - Stableford
1st Mod Chaviraksa (11) 37pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (9) 37pts
3rd Alan Evans (24) 34pts
4th Stuart Rogers (11) 30pts
The first visit of the month and yes another of our regular outings to Phoenix (again it was Mountains and Ocean). The course as ever was great but yet again we had a low level turnout on the day so only two places on offer and these were decided on count back.
That lady “Mod” found her top game again for her second win in two weeks, just taking it over Fergus with a better back nine and yes in third, yet again, it was Alan Evans
There were no 2’s today - they seem to be hard to get at Phoenix these days.
Saturday, July 4, Green Valley - Stableford
1st John Franklin (13) 40pts
2nd Martin Solberg (19) 39pts
3rd Ted Senior (15) 38pts
4th George Robinson (11) 35pts
5th Fergus Brennan (9) 34pts
Saturday was one of our regular weekend visits to Green Valley with a moderate turnout. Places were awarded to third with John Franklin pulling off a double win (his first being on Tuesday at Bangpra), and both times with a score of forty points. Good golf that. Martin Solberg was second one back at thirty-nine with Ted Senior another one back in third with thirty-eight.
There were two 2’s, one from George Robinson and the other from Martin Solberg.

Reg proves age is no barrier to winning

PSC golf from The Bunker

Monday, June 29, Bangpra - Medal
Playing a Medal round at Bangpra on Monday, John McDonald showed a bit of the form we know he is capable of to win on a count back over Gerry Cooney, both on net 70, while the golfer of the month William Macey had to settle for third place three shots behind.

Reg Smart was the winner at Phoenix.

1st John McDonald (9) net 70
2nd Gerry Cooney (12) net 70
3rd William Macey (11) net 73
Near Pins: William Macey, John McDonald, Roger Privett and Geoff Hart.
Wednesday, July 1, Phoenix - Medal
Reg Smart, who is in his 70’s, has been playing regularly lately and he fancies his chances of winning the ‘golfer of the month’ title in July. Well he certainly got off to a good start by winning here at Phoenix with a sub par round, one shot ahead of Korean golfer Hai Sul Chung. A whole host of golfers finished two over par but it was Eddie Martin who came out on top, taking third place after a count back.
1st Reg Smart (23) net 71
2nd Hai Sul Chung (10) net 72
3rd Eddie Martin (17) net 74
Near Pins: Reg Smart, Paul Smith and Alan Sullivan.
Friday, July 3, Greenwood - Stableford
Geoff Parker returned from his month long stint in Cambodia to come into the clubhouse all smiles and thinking he had done enough to win with 38 points. Sadly for him, Gerry Cooney had the best round of the day and took the honours with 39 points. Geoff’s good pal Heath Norris, visiting from Phuket, got in the frame too and took third place one point behind Geoff.
1st Gerry Cooney (11) 39pts
2nd Geoff Parker (16) 38pts
3rd Heath Norris (28) 37pts
Near Pins: Eddie Martin, Alan Sullivan (3)

Even Voller finds it tough

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

On the back of a disappointing Matchplay result the previous day, the Pattaya Golf Society visited Bangpra on Thursday, July 2 for a stableford competition on the beautiful course. The small group were treated to a track in excellent condition and with slick greens. Scores would depend on putting as much as anything else.
Mikael Andersson scored 31 points for third place, just behind Tony Thorne’s fine 33 point score whilst Chris Voller shot 35 points to win but was disappointed as it was his first over-par round in the last five outings. His form really is that good.
Chris joined Tony Thorne in a share of the ‘2’s pot for his effort on the second, Tony’s birdie coming on the twelfth.
The day had been good enough at Bangpra to banish the matchplay blues.
Knight lords it at Green Valley
On a very pleasant Saturday, July 4, the Pattaya Golf Society visited their usual weekend venue Green Valley to play a stableford competition on a beautifully warm day with a refreshing breeze. The course was in fine condition and the greens had picked up some welcome pace since an overdue cut the day before.
The returning Irishman Larry Slattery joined Harry Riley and Chris Voller in third place with 35 points whilst Wichai Tananusorn went one better with 36 for second.
Aussie Phil Knight was having one of those weeks which will do his confidence proud and he took first place in style with 39 points and the day’s best gross of 78. He added to his daily haul with two near-pin prizes, kindly donated by Paul McNally in celebration of his birthday, whilst Wichai also took one for his fine effort on the sixteenth.
Wichai shared the ‘2’s pot with Larry Slattery, the latter’s chip from off the green on the ninth finding the hole with perfect pace.
The Booby Bevy was reserved for the returning Markku Tynell whose struggled all day to sort out the intricacies of golf in the Kingdom.
Golf is always enjoyable at Green Valley and this day was no exception.

Hector beats Mills by a whisker

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, June 29, Phoenix – 1-2-3 Stableford
This was our fun game of the month with nine groups out in a 1-2-3 team stableford event and also an individual two divisional competition. With this format today this is a non counting game regarding handicaps.
The Mountain and Ocean courses were selected and as always here we tee’d off spot on time. Both nines were in good condition with very slick greens and this surprised us all with the scores coming in.
Keith Hector and Andy Mills came home with 39 points each, and they both scored 20 on the back nine. They were equal again with 14 points each on the back six and 7 on the back three, but Keith finally got the nod after beating Andy on a back two count back of 6/4 - the Sheffield lad was not smiling!
Mikael Andersson finished third with 38 points, beating newly arrived, and here permanently now, Neville Scurrell on a back three count back of 7/6.
In the second division Tony Duthie beat Joe Kubon on a back-nine count back of 19/18 after they both came in with 35 points. Russell Benson finished third just one point behind.
Andy Mills recorded the only ‘2’ of the day in either division and the Near pins went to Keith Hector, Bill Hewitt, Andy Mills and Roy Thornton (Div.1) and Joe Kubon, Jimmy Johnson and Bryan Rought (Div.2).
In the team 1-2-3 stableford, with the prizes provided by the rollover kitty, yet again count back saw Burnie’s side lose out with a 51/49 back nine score after Tony Duthie, Andy Mills and Dave Richards came in with the same score of 79 points. The winners, the Birdie Boys of Mikael Andersson, Roy Thornton and Barry Traynor, beat them by one point to finish on 80.
Next month’s fun game is a two-person scramble at Green Valley using the rainbow rules - this could be interesting!
Wednesday, July 1 Green Valley – Match Play
The second round of the monthly I.P.G.C. matchplay competition saw us in an away fixture to Lewinski’s at Green Valley. Please turn to the Lewiinski’s golf report for the full scores.
Friday, July 3, Eastern Star – Stableford
There is a gradual improvement in this course each week but still no sign of a reduction in the green fee from the management for our non members, so with numbers low we only had two placings in each division.
Still in form, and with his wife caddying for him now, Tom Sathrum won Division 1 with 41 points while Cully Monks, now acclimatized after his wife’s return from Ireland, scored 35 points to come in second.
After 5 weeks in the Soviet desert Tom Novak returned 35 points to win Division 2, with Steve Ironside, here for three months without his other half, scoring 31 to come in second after beating Bill 19/18 on count back.

Trevor Schirmer herds ‘em in

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, June 29, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
1st Ray Trembath 39pts
2nd Paul Hartley 36pts
3rd Rodney Hayes 34pts
4th John Teague 34pts
5th Sam McLellan 34pts
Ray Trembath used his previous knowledge of the course to easily take his first win out of Soi 13, by four shots from Paul Hartley in second. Rodney Hayes took third after winning the count back with 16 as John Teague could only manage 15, but with 10 of those on the back six he took fourth spot as Sam McLellan could only garner 9 over the same six.
Sam McLellan had the only ‘2’ in the first division and Kenny Priddy, Noel McKenna and John Teague with two shared the second division pot.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new member Sam McLellan and also welcomed back John Mabry, Bob Maloney, Noel McKenna, Geoff Braimbridge, John Bickle and Patrick Scullion.
Wednesday, July 1, Green Valley -
Match Play
Pattaya Golf Society 3.5 v The Haven 4.5
Individual Scores (PGS members first): Bob Lamond (5) lost v Russell Exley (8) 1 down; Dave Stockman (5) won v Ray Trembath (9) 1 up; Chris Voller (6) lost v Rick Holmes (10) 2 & 1; Philip Knight (9) won 2 up v Mark Campbell (10); Roy Thornton (12) drew v Barry Traynor (12); Harry Riley (13) won 3 & 3 v Trevor Schirmer (12); Bob Watson (16) lost 1 down v Tony Barritt (13); Emile Van de Wiel (20) lost 5 & 4 v Stephen Beard (21).
A very tightly contested match went right down to the wire with the last match out on the course being the deciding game which Tony Barritt closed out at one up against Bob Watson. Bob had come back from three down and four to play to go down the last needing a win to tie the game and the match. Unfortunately for the PGS team he was not quite able to manage that against a very determined opponent who held him off to halve the eighteenth and win the match for The Haven.
Earlier Russell Exley had, against the odds, taken the first game in the match one up when he halved the last after hitting his second out of bounds over the green. He then had to go back to play his fourth, nearly holed it, and then squeaked a half when Bob Lamond uncharacteristically bogeyed the hole. In the same group, game number two saw Dave Stockman chip in on the last for a birdie and a win against Ray Trembath after an absorbing match that never had more than a hole in it all the way round.
The second group comprised of Chris Voller, the most backed player, who surprisingly went down against the odds to a revitalised Rick Holmes who belied the difference in handicaps with a very good and tidy round that saw Rick home as the winner at two and one. The other game in the group was Phil Knight who played very steadily and competently to win against the long hitting Mark Campbell. Phil took the game two up by winning the eighteenth after Mark had a last gasp chance to halve the hole, and that left the match finely balanced at the halfway mark at two a piece.
Roy Thornton then had a very hotly contested game with Barry Traynor which was finally settled as a draw on the last after both had been leading the game at different points on the match; Barry coming back from two down and three to play for a well played half. In the same group Trevor Schirmer found Harry Riley in a very uncompromising mood and struggled all the way round until finally having to concede the game on the sixteenth as Harry slipped in another solid par to close it out three and two. The match had then swung heavily to the advantage of the PGS with them needing just a win to take the match and a draw to halve from either of the last two out on the course.
Stephen Beard in fact closed his game out early on the fourteenth with a strong game that saw him home five and four against Emile Van de Weil. It was a game that Emile struggled to get to terms with after Stephen went five up after five, and although he won a few holes to get back into it, he could never quite get near enough to put pressure on the final holes.
So with Tony doing the business The Haven ran out the winners in a match that epitomized the best aspects of friendly competition in golf matches and a few beers were shared in the clubhouse at the post match get together.
At the same time as the match was being played the second Monthly IPGC Stableford Tournament was being held starting from the 5th tee and the results can be found in the Lewiinski’s golf report in this newspaper, with Haven players doing well and taking the top place in two of the divisions, and also having three other places.
Friday, July 3,
Phoenix - Stableford
1st Trevor Schirmer 40pts
2nd Bob Lamond 39pts
3rd John Teague 37pts
4th Sid Ottaway 37pts
5th Keith Emerson 37pts
Trevor Schirmer quickly bounced back from his match play set back with a sparkling round that saw him just nip the threat of an also revitalised Bob Lamond. Bob had also lost but his match play game but had played for the other side so was carrying a double forward and played much better than earlier in the week to rack up a three under round that unfortunately came up against Trevor’s fine form at four under handicap.
John Teague took third place by virtue of a better count back of 22 with Sid Ottaway (21) and Keith Emerson (16) in fourth and fifth places respectively.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Bob Lamond and Sam McLellan had one each in the first division.
Back at The Haven, The Doc welcomed back Danny Greer, Richard Lyne and Brian Kelly before presenting the prizes.

Near Pins: #2 Sim Davis, #9 Seamus Cotter, #12 Eddie Beilby, #16 Steve Miller
2’s: Five
It seemed a quiet week although the society turned out in its solid numbers. Perhaps it was because “Rocky” and Joe “Lederhosen Mcyodel” had returned to Ireland for a holiday.
It took the empanelment of the title slot committee, but when the dust settled it was deemed that the performance of the week was Ben O’Connor’s medalist numbers of 42 points. Looking up from the A Flight awards podium at Ben was fellow Irishman “The Right Honorable” Patrick Regan with a steady 37 points.
‘The President’ Peter Henshaw kept the Irish theme going, posting an even par 36 points to take the B Flight honors. It took Sim, ‘the Donkey’s’ better half to stop it being a clean sweep by the Mick’s, with 34 points that gained a count back verdict over Mike “The Mechanic” Craighead.
Mike handed out his new business cards in the club house as he has changed his phone number, seems that’s not all he has changed.
Wednesday, July 1, Green Valley - Match Play
Lewiinski’s 6 v Jomtien Golf 2
Individual Scores (Lewiinski’s first): Bob Newell won 5-4 v Andy Mills; Benny O’Connor lost v 4-3 Emmett White; Jack Spencer lost 5-4 v Keith Hector; Ian Halfpenny won 1 up v Neville Scurrell; Eddie Beilby won 4-3 v Bernie Sinclair; Peter Henshaw won 1 up v Tony Duthie; Colin Davis won 1 up v Tony Sawers; Barry Elphick won 2 up v Ian Hart.
The second round of the IPGC’S International Matchplay League was hosted by Lewiinski’s Golf Society at the Green Valley golf course. Lewiinski’s won their match against the Jomtien Golf by six to two in what was a very competitive game, with three of the matches going to the last hole.
The second match between the Haven and the PGS Rabbi’s Bar was a real nail biter with the Haven emerging the victors four and a half to three and a half (see Haven report).
Wednesday, July 1, Green Valley - IPGC Monthly Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob Maloney 41pts
2nd Tony Thorne 37pts

2nd Kenny Priddy 33pts
3rd Sim Davis 31pts
A Flight saw Bob Maloney’s best of the day 41 points take the top spot, followed by Tony Thorne four shots adrift. Keith Emerson needed the aid of a count back decision over Kazuo Takimoto to fill the flight as both were knotted on 35 points
Chris Knapp took the spoils in B Flight with a solid 39 points and Bryan Rought got a count back verdict to relegate Don Nellis into third spot as both posted 35 points.
Irelands Joe Tynan took full control of C Flight, carding a very respectable 39 points while Kenny Perry’s 33 points was good enough for the second spot. The radiant Sim Davis closed the flight out with 31.
Colin Stead, playing as a guest with Lewiinski’s, aced the second hole for his first hole in one.
The Day ended with an excellent buffet back at Lewiinski’s.

The junior flight saw John Calvert victorious again, posting an even par 36 points while Martin Solberg took second a shot adrift.
Peter Hynard and Colin Davis split a handy 2’s pot.

PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Tuesday, June 30, Green Valley – Stableford
Tuesday saw the end of the financial year, and Mulligans Lakeside travelled to Rayong Green Valley, anticipating good conditions following the Thai PGA visit the previous week. The course was indeed in good nick, although the greens would have almost certainly have been running faster for the pros.

Martin Hayes signed off his golfing visit with second place at Green Valley.

With the good conditions, only Jeff Wylie (7) was able to break his handicap, with a well compiled 38 points. The next best was our soon to be heading home Martin Hayes (12) with 32 points and he was followed by local member, Terry Phur (15) with 28 points.
Technical prizes were spread around between Alex, Jeff and Nobby.
It was also good to see returning John, Ray and Zep, although their holiday was only brief this time.
Thursday, July 2, Greenwood - Stableford
Thursday, we journeyed up to Greenwood where we played the A & C layouts, which were in very good condition. However, it was disappointing to play off the forward tees, effectively yellow, although not marked on the card as such.
The round was interrupted by a severe thunder storm, with heavy rain, which upset the rhythm of 1 or 2 players, pity that. Despite the amount of rainfall, the course drained well and casual water was minimal 30 minutes after resumption.
Ken Hole (14) coped with the conditions best to score 36 points, beating Bernie Segrave on a count back 17 to 16 on the back 9.
Technical awards were picked up by Jeff, Alex, with Martin grabbing 2 in his last game with us for a while.
Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc., please call Jeff 089 094 1841 or Ray 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!

‘The Beast’ savages the field

PSC golf from The Caddyshack

Monday’s winners (left to right) Ben Findon,
James Savage and Ted Morris with Dave Strang.

Monday, June 29, Green Valley – Stableford
While half of the Caddyshackers were involved in a titanic Matchplay tussle against The Golf Club, the other half played our home course at Green Valley.
Coming in third place, with what would normally be enough to win, Ted Morris returned a very respectable 39 points. In second place, and beating Ted with a better back nine, was the very deliberate Ben Findon. The top spot today was taken with a magnificent 41 points from ‘The Beast’ James Savage.
I said last week that Jeff North was winning the battle to be the second best left handed golfer in the Caddyshack, but James has now thrown his hat into the ring with his very own version of a golfing masterclass.
1st James Savage 41pts
2nd Ben Findon 39pts
3rd Ted Morris 39pts
Wednesday, July 1, Greenwood – Stableford
Greenwood was the venue for our midweek outing and haven’t they toughened it up! Over the years this course has seemed to produce some very low scores, but by moving the tees back as far as they have, the shorter hitters amongst us now struggle.
Coming in third place today, on his last round before returning back to New Zealand, was Don Willson with 37 points. In second spot, also in his last week before returning to work, Peter Henderson came home with 38 points. I speak for everybody involved with Caddyshask golf in saying many thanks for your help and organising over the last couple of months, we hope to see you back soon.
Taking first place today and rolling back the years on 38 points was ‘young’ Ted Morris. When it comes to chipping, putting and consistency, Ted is up there with the best.
1st Ted Morris 38pts
2nd Peter Henderson 38pts
3rd Don Willson 37pts
Friday, July 3, Green Valley – Stableford
For the second week in a row this looked like another battle of the big heads, with Greg Ritchie and Damien Trant fighting it out at the top. This week though they were going up against another man on top of his game Ben “I’m in the mood for dancing” Findon. They were all neck and neck until Ben had two birdies in a row to pull him well clear of the field. So it was left to Damien and Greg to fight for second spot. In the end Damian took that honour as Greg made a mess of the last hole.
Dave Strang kindly sponsored the nearest pins and these went to Ted Morris, Ted Gardner, Peter Henderson and Ben Findon.
1st Ben Findon 41pts
2nd Damian Trant 38pts
3rd Greg Ritchie 36pts

McNeely snares monthly award

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Thomas Cotton
& Derek Brook
Tuesday, June 30, 09, Plutaluang - Stableford
A sad glop of golfers converged at Bert’s on Tuesday morning for the Michael Jackson Memorial Competition. Bert told us to “Beat-it”, so we headed to the course with several of us were vying for the much admired “Alan Bolton Golfer of the Month” award.

Perry McNeely (right) receives the ‘golfer of the month’ prize from Craig of Alan Bolton Property Consultants.

In contention were PSC’s Golf Chairman, Perry McNeely with 6 points, Joel Flor, with 6 points and our own correspondent with 3 points. So it promised to be a real “Thriller”.
The Navy Course was in good trim and it was a fine day, so there were lots of expectations, except from our correspondent (Thomas Cotton), who was suffering from jet lag, having just arrived from overseas the afternoon prior.
There were some marvellous shots, with our own Captain, DB, chipping out of a bunker over a knoll into the cup for a birdie on a par three. Then Don Richardson hit a long iron shot onto the green only one metre from the cup and sunk it for another birdie. Meanwhile, our correspondent just trudged along, making bogies and the odd par, mostly day-dreaming about the Scottish Highlands, from whence he had come.
So when we got back to the clubhouse, our correspondent was somewhat perplexed that the other contenders were congratulating him on scoring 40 points. Indeed, as our Captain warned, it was neither “Black nor White”, since if McNeely came in second, his total monthly points would be 9 to our correspondent’s 8. And as the scorecards came in, no one had bettered McNeely for second place and he had indeed won the coveted “Alan Bolton Golfer of the Month”. Our correspondent had something to mourn, beside Michael’s untimely demise.
Back at Bert’s we toasted our new “Alan Bolton Golfer of the Month” and joined in singing “We Are the World”, paying homage to one whose soul has moon-walked off his mortal coil.
1st Perry McNeely 38pts
2nd John Heffernas 36pts
Friday, July 3, Bangpra - Stableford
It has been some time since we visited this course so we decided to give it a try. Due to less expensive green fees after 11 am, we all had a bit of a lie-in and a late breakfast at Bert’s.
For the eight golfers who attended it was a great day if not a bit warm. The course was in very good condition and even had the appearance of getting ready for a pro event. For some of us the new green complex on No.10 was an experience and we all decided they need to redo the handicapping of the holes.
We did not have any encounters with the monkeys, however, an extremely large lizard, mid-croc size, was ambling along in front of the 15th green. It soon disappeared into the bush and play continued. Strange things one sees on the courses here.
Back at Bert’s, with some diving into the usual Friday ‘Fish ‘n Chip’ special, along with the pints of Tiger, the scores were recorded and the winners announced.
We play golf every Tuesday and Friday from Bert’s and all are welcome.
1st Steve Hamstad (11) 32pts
2nd Daryl Evans (20) 32pts
3rd Tom Breslin (23) 31pts

Walter & Marcel take the spoils

PSC golf from the Café Kronborg

Peter Blackburn
Monday, June 29, Bangpakong,
Riverside Course – Stableford
Once more we were down in numbers and just eight of us headed off in the minibus on the 80 minute drive to Bankpakong. This was to be my first look at this course and I was suitably impressed.

Marcel Wittwer was the top golfer at Greenwood with 37 points.

We picked a very good time to play it as the Singha Classic is to be played there later this week and the course was in excellent condition. The greens were slick but very true and any golfers straying from the fairways were well advised to “take their medicine” and play the ball back on to the fairway from the long rough with a short iron. I discovered this very early in the game after attempting to hit five and four irons from the rough on the first couple of holes.
The weather was kind to us after threatening to rain on a number of occasions and in fact the temperature must have dropped around 10 degrees half way through the round. Thunder and some lightning in the distance convinced The Admiral & I that we would get wet at some stage but there was fortunately not a drop of rain to be seen.
If I may be critical of Bangpakong I need to mention the drink prices at the Drink Stops. 45 baht for a can of Coke and 75 baht for a bottle of Gatorade is somewhat “over the top” in our opinion. Nonetheless it was a very enjoyable round on a course that was beautifully prepared.
Having just eight players there was only one flight and in first place having just returned from a one month holiday in Europe was the colourful Walter Bachli with 35 points. In second place with 34 points was the consistent Marcel Wittwer, and somehow your scribe (Peter Blackburn) managed to pick up third place prize money with 29 points (just 11 points on the front nine).
Thursday, July 2, Greenwood – Stableford
We headed off for Greenwood at our usual time of 0815 hrs and in fine although humid conditions we were able to hit off shortly after our arrival. The Admiral made the comment that there could not have been much rain lately as the course looked dry but indeed that was to change a couple of hours later.
We played C & A nines and shortly after commencing the second nine it rained briefly and we sheltered at a Drink Stop. Upon reaching the tee at A5 the Admiral suggested we take shelter in the conveniently located “Thunderstorm Survival Hut” alongside the tee at A5. We spent the next hour and a bit sheltering from one of the most severe electrical thunderstorms I have experienced. Even our umbrellas were put to the test as we tried to keep dry under the shelter as the wind was so strong. The fairways were flooded and it was obvious that the greens would be the same. However, when the storm passed and the water on the fairways and greens rapidly drained away we were able to continue & finish our rounds.
The weather did not appear to have much affect on some as there were some fairly good scores considering the conditions. Just one flight due to the small field again and in first place was ‘Mr. Consistent’ himself Marcel Wittwer with 37 points, winning on a count back from another golfer in form, Daryl Evans. Don Richardson continued his good form with 35 points in third place beating Kevin Dinan on a count back who finished fourth.

Bangpra back to its best

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Joey’s column
Monday, June 29, Burapha - Stableford
Whilst necessary maintenance work continues at Burapha, the 32 Outbackers experienced another unusual combination of the Belfry and Dunes nines. With the number of players returning to some normality, the Outback were able to split the players into three divisions thus giving the opportunity for Div C [handicap 20+] to play from the shorter white tees, the remainder playing from the blues.

Don Pavlovic was the day’s top scorer at Laem Chabang.

The course was in its usual excellent shape and the greens were pretty quick and tough to read.
Bruce McAdam, who has been experiencing a lean spell, was quick to take advantage of the shorter course, trouncing his rivals by six, to rack up 40 points and a handicap cut from 21.2 to 19.9. In second was the lovely Jum, returning after a long break whilst Pat was away in Ireland, and beating David Davies on count back, both with 33. Welcome back Pat!
There was a hard fought challenge match out there between the Brits [Jim Moreton & Jack] v the Aussies [Capt’ Bob & Pottsy] which went right to the last hole, when Jack’s four foot putt rolled in to win 1 Up; a great result for the English duo and there was a rumour of a return match at Bangpra on Wednesday.
Jim Moreton, who only the day before wanted to take a voluntary handicap cut, earned one fair and square, winning Div B with his fine 39 points, and has had his handicap adjusted down to 14.5. The best in Div A were Andy Butterworth and Chris Davisson, both on 35.
There were just two ‘2’s from Sakorn Pramoolchart and Eddie Blackwell
Div A (0–12)
1st Andy Butterworth (12) 35pts
2nd Chris Davisson (12) 35pts
3rd Jack Moseley (11) 33pts
Div B (13-19)
1st James Moreton (16) 39pts
2nd Peter Stonebridge (16) 37pts
3rd John O’Keefe (16) 35pts
Div C (20+)
1st Bruce McAdam (21) 40pts
2nd Jum Karagit (23) 34pts
3rd David Davies (24) 34pts
Tuesday, June 30, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
There were 17 Outbackers at Pattaya Country Club today for another enjoyable day at this local course. What is noticeable here is the friendly welcome the Outback get from the staff each Tuesday, both upon arrival and in the restaurant afterwards.
The course was still in a fair condition following a tournament at the weekend with the hazards and GUR clearly marked. It was another fine day with the weather being kind to us and a little breeze keeping it comfortable.
It was one division today with five places and ‘2’s.
The top two were decided on count back with regular ‘Aussie’, Geoff Moodie (28) and Erik Anttonen (8) both returning 38 points, but Geoff winning by one point. Erik leaves Thailand for a couple of months and we look forward to his return.
Third and fourth were also decided on count back with good friends, Bob Pearce (12) and Nigel Cannon (23) both having 36 points. Nigel had a sterling back nine – 24 points – and Bob 19. Suzi Lawton (21) had 35 points to take fifth place.
We had three ‘2’s today from Suzy Lawton John Stafford and Erik Anttonen.
Tuesday is a regular fixture at Pattaya Country Club with a 9.30 tee time, under the command of Barry Chadbourn for the Outback Golf bar and is always a good day for golf with some fun as well!
1st Geoff Moodie (28) 38pts
2nd Erik Anttonen (8) 38pts
3rd Nigel Cannon (23) 36pts
4th Bob Pearce (12) 36pts
5th Suzi Lawton (21) 35pts
Wednesday, July 1, Bangpra - Stableford
Just as quiet as all the courses in the area is Bangpra: no sign of any monkeys, but the remaining flora & fauna gave this course its usual appealing karma. The lakes were showing an abundance of water, the fairways were excellent and the ball sat up well; but most importantly, the greens were back - superb condition, and just as difficult as ever to get those putts across the various slopes on the right line together with the right pace.
Fifteen Outbackers played today, and teeing off ahead of time Pat Regan’s drive hardly made the ladies tee on the first, however, he miraculously chipped in to make his par!
The altered tenth hole, now an over 400 yard Par 4 (index 18) is now virtually fully restored and integrated into the course, although the green is not quite like the rest and does seem a little new.
The scores reflected the Outbackers unfamiliarity with the course with Capt’ Bob coming out on top with an ordinary 34 points, further back were the two Bruces (B1 & B2), who were surprised to be at the top of the leader board, with Rick Evans filling the last spot on 30 points.
We are back here in a couple of week’s time so we will see a few returning to gain their revenge on this pretty but tricky little course.
Finally, there was just one ‘2’ coming from, yes, you’ve guessed it, Capt’ Bob.
1st Bob Philp (6) 34pts
2nd Bruce Milner (13) 33pts
3rd Bruce McAdam (20) 31pts
4th Rick Evans (5) 30pts
Thursday, July 2, Green Valley - Stableford
Can a golfer win a tournament scoring a miserable 12 points on the front nine starting, wipe, par (3pts), double (1pt), wipe, triple (1pt) & double (1pt)? That’s just 6 points in the first six holes. Well he can if his name his Barry Chadbourn, who romped back with a gross 40 to rack up an unbelievable 24 points and finish with a total of 36, the top score of the day. There must have been something really special in that amber nectar he was guzzling!
In second was frequent visitor Mark Fisher with a more conventional 35 points, followed by ‘stunning’ John Lawton in third on 34 after beating Geoff Doody on count back.
There was another single ‘jackpot’ ‘2’, from Mark Fisher.
1st Barry Chadbourn (20) 36pts
2nd Mark Fisher (3) 35pts
3rd John Lawton (16) 34pts
Friday, July 3, Laem Chabang - Stableford
The course (C & B) was nothing short of spectacular for the 30 Outbackers playing today, as Laem Chabang sparkled in the sunny conditions, with its ‘Axminster’ fairways and true ‘velvet’ greens; no wonder this course is acclaimed to be one of the best.
The first group out once again used the Outback ‘Tee Box’ markers to ensure a full length course from the whites and the ideal weather probably contributed to the exceptional scoring, with no less than six players bettering their handicap.
Div A had three players all on 37 points, being separated only on count back, with Art O’Connor coming out on top, from Paul Greenaway and Capt’ Bob.
Div B was a tight group of nine players all in the 12 to 15 handicap range, and they produced the two top scores of the day; 41 from Don Pavlovic (handicap cut to 12) and Pierre Bietry with 39 who took the runner’s up spot.
Walter Baechli, who has only played with the Outback once before back in October last year at Plantation, donned his best long socks and his best game to fire 37 points to win Div C ahead of George Bishop (35) and Pottsy (34).
There was yet another ‘jackpot’ ‘2’ coming from Capt’ Bob
Note: The start sheet today had 39 names but 9 players failed to turn up without so much as a phone call. Please, if you put your name down to play and cannot – phone Capt’ Bob or Jack and let them know; it is extremely difficult to regroup everybody at the last minute, trying guess whether somebody is going to show or not. In future, we will ask for a contact number at the time of signing up.
Div A (0–11)
1st Art O’Connor (11) 37pts
2nd Paul Greenaway (10) 37pts
3rd Bob Philp (6) 37pts
Div B (12-15)
1st Don Pavlovic (13) 41pts
2nd Bietry Pierre (15) 39pts
3rd Chris Davisson (12) 34pts
Div C (16+)
1st Walter Baechli (16) 37pts
2nd George Bishop (16) 35pts
3rd Campbell Potts (19) 34pts
Friday, July 3, The Emerald -  Stableford
There were 11 Outbackers who decided to play at the alternative Outback venue today, including Brian Ferrigno playing with us for the first time. The Emerald was the choice and will continue to be the alternative venue on Friday’s for the next few weeks.
The course was in very good condition as usual and there had been some rain the night before which helped. We were away on time but unfortunately following a Thai competition which made for a little longer round than usual (approaching five hours).
It was a one-two for the Bruce’s today; B1 on 37 and B2 on 35, with Geoff Doody edging out Harvey Samuel on count back for third.
All ‘jackpot’ ‘2’s this week, with another one from Bruce Milner.
1st Bruce Milner (13) 37pts
2nd Bruce McAdam (20) 35pts
3rd Geoff Doody (21) 34pts
Note: If you played this course, the Outback would like you to comment on our forum, outbackchat – topic, “course reviews”, which can be found on our website, www.outbackgolfbar.com. This would help others as to the current condition of the courses in the area. For example: value for money (green fee & cart etc), pace of play, condition of the fairways, condition of the greens, caddies, and drink stops & restaurant. Even if you played a different course, please send in your review for all to read. The more the merrier.
The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or give Bob a call on 087 941 2474.

Duncan enjoys ‘red letter day’ at Greenwood

PSC golf from P J Pool Bar

Neil Duncan
Due to a glitch in the hard drive, the P J Pool Bar golf report did not reach the publishers last week. In brief Bev Ewens won at Pattana on Tuesday, June 23 and David Johnson won at Bangpra two days later.
Tuesday, June 30,
The Emerald (White tees) - Stableford
A goodly group of eighteen turned out to take on The Emerald which we found to be in excellent condition. One club wunderkind Willy Nachbur took the honors in the B Division (H/C 19 and up) with 36 points, well ahead of Jim Fortune and David Johnson in second and third spots with 29 points apiece.
Bob Drumm came in first in the A Division (H/C 18 and below) with Rob Gandley being runner up with 30 points and Tony Garnett coming in third place with 29 points.
The average score for the day was 28.7 points and the near pin and long putt bonuses were evenly distributed through the field.
Thursday, July 2,
Greenwood A & C (White tees) - Stableford
Is it my imagination or are the rain storms at Greenwood extra heavy, extra electric? Just over half of the group got in marginally ahead of the downpour whilst the others had to correctly sit it out on the course before finishing.
Yours truly had a very good day at the office, scoring 38 points plus nabbing four of the five ‘technicals’. There were four players a mere point behind with Ian Campbell and Dennis Jaycock taking second and third dividends after a count-back. The average score was 36.1 points.
Note: Any golfers seeking to play with our group that wish to know about the group’s format please visit P J Pool Bar & Restaurant on Soi Watboonsamphan (Soi Kanoi) or phone Neil on 089 511 0575.

The PJ golfers assemble with their caddies at Emerald.

Starting Saturday, July 04, 2009 the Pattaya Backgammon League started the annual master points race. Points are awarded for number of contestants and match points won, using the ABT (American Backgammon Tour) master points calculator. The top eight players that amass the most points by Dec 20, 2009 will play for a free entry to the Thailand Open in January, 2010.

This last Saturday could not have been a more splendid atmosphere on Jomtien Beach. The ocean was just right, the Sun was just right, the wind was gently blowing and the players were just right.
One new player stopped by, none other than Gerhard Schebler, who happens to be a GrandMaster in chess. He is an international competitor who also has a few successful students. Charming young man, very polite, even in defeat, although I must mention backgammon is not his game of choice. He has also formed The Pattaya Chess School.
In the first round, I was paired against David Brown, a veteran player with massive experience all over the world. Our match was very close, with me winning 9-7 in the end.
While this position was not the ultimate decision that won me the match, it certainly helped; the winning stroke of this match happened to be a very handy double 2’s when my back was against the wall!
Black (me) is leading the match 5-4 to 9. If David takes and I win a gammon (worth 4 points) I win the match, so this is what is known in the trade as a “pressure cube”. I’m putting him to the test in making a difficult decision. At the time this happened, I thought I would take, if I were him. Now it’s not so clear to me. What would you do?
Answer to last weeks featured position from the computer program (snowie) is, Double/Take. More on Snowie and neural networks next week.
The Pattaya Backgammon League meets every Saturday at Somboons restaurant on Jomtien beach. For further details and a map you can go to www.pattayabackgammonleague.com.

Thompson makes his mark

PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar

At daybreak the Three Sisters golf group tee’d off at Pattaya Country Club, and as it was the last day of the month it meant that all the golfers involved were vying to get their names on the Three Sisters trophy.

Monthly winner Bill Thompson (right) with runner up Bob Benda.

In the end, Bill Thompson prevailed again this week as he shot 37 points to win the day. Three shots back in second was Bob Benda (this was the same combination as last week.) Standing on the right of the photo is Bill and his name is one of many that will be engraved on the trophy showing our monthly winners.
The day was overcast and a great day to play golf. Some of the greens were slick compared to previous weeks, which made it difficult for some of the golfers.
In a side contest Americans Bill and Bob crushed their Commonwealth opponents “Unlucky” Luciano Glavina and Dale “The Bear” Shier 4 & 3.
Back at Caddy Shack II, Herbie Ishinaga provided grub for the hard working golfers and there was more than adequate liquid refreshment available for the thirsty players.

Three’s a crowd at Softball Sunday

Pattaya Sports Club Sunday Softball

The happy softball gang after the triumphant triple header.

Diego Wells
Sunday, June 28 softball seemed to be a gala event, as the softball superstars were out in full force. More then 30 ‘ballers’ arrived ready to test their skills and compete. It was good to see some new faces as well, as the Dutch trio of Hans, Joyce and Gerard showed us that Euroweenies can also play ball!
To accommodate all, we decided to play what turned out to be a fiercely competitive triple header. A couple of unsung heroes, Ernie and Peter were named honorary team captains, mostly due to the fact that they rarely, if ever, argue with anyone. Jimmy and Rick took turns umpiring, and many softballers switched positions and teams over the course of the three games.
All three games were played at a high level of intensity and skill. Overall, it was a great turnout, and yet another excellent day to be out on the diamond in Thailand.
Game 1
With the wind heading directly into home plate, the first game was a defensive struggle. Both Alan and Perry (pitching for Ernie’s and Peter’s team, respectively) enjoyed the conditions and pitched brilliantly. Runs were tough to come by for the hitters, as the fielding was also of a high standard.
Peter’s team scored in four of the seven innings, while Ernie’s team could only earn runs scored in two of seven. Big man Robert, who is now officially a full time Pattaya dweller, was batter of the day, hitting for the cycle, including a vicious homerun to left center field that stunned the crowd. Final score: Panthers 6, Eels, 4.
Game 2
Jimmy went from umpire to pitcher of Ernie’s team, and the move seemed to inspire the Eels bats. Dirk, Nick, John Stockton and Rhys put on a hitting exhibition, knocking in many runs and leading the Eels to a 13-6 victory over the Panthers, and forcing a game 3 grudge match. Another 5 inning game would determine the overall victors
Game 3
The boys saved the most exciting game for the last, as Peter’s team jumped out to a 4 run lead in the top of the first, with hits from Dave, Scotty, Diego, Mark, Ben, Phil and Robin.
Ernie’s eels then went on a rampage, scoring a record 13 runs in the bottom of the inning, by batting through the order twice and knocking the stuffing out of the ball. They were just one run shy of winning on the 10 run mercy rule, but Peter’s Panthers, never gave up, and quickly clawed their way back into the match.
In the second Peter and his ballers scored 3, and in the third they actually took the lead with 7 glorious runs being scored. The Eels lost their sting after the first inning, and were remarkably shut out for the rest of the game.
The Panthers won the game by scoring in every inning and eventually winning the game 19-13, and with that the overall match.

Rick rips one to right field while Dave, John CF, Rocky, Scotty,
John E, and Peter all look on and admire.
